Skeet Carter
Good morning. Good morning. What's up, y'? All? How you doing?
Charlamagne Tha God
What's happening?
Skeet Carter
I'm amazing, man. I feel good.
Charlamagne Tha God
You got a couple more dollars since
Skeet Carter
the last time I seen you, man, I did, man. You know, money's gonna change you a little bit, you know, Last time I had old teeth, I got the new ones. Y. I got the. They asked me what color white. I just. I said bad white. So I got the bad.
Charlamagne Tha God
You know, the ill thing about teeth nowadays is, man, I know people who got them early on feel stupid. I know, because those were the bad. They got. They got much better.
Skeet Carter
Way better. Way better. And these are my first set. I got it. Like, I probably got two. Two more to go.
Charlamagne Tha God
Okay.
Skeet Carter
In life, you know, you want to keep them fresh.
Charlamagne Tha God
What made you want to get the teeth?
Skeet Carter
Oh, I never liked my teeth. I always had big kid teeth, you know, And I was an adult, and I felt like I needed adult teeth. Like, they were like big and round. So now I got to kind of like, you know, I got steak teeth now. I could always eat whatever type of food I want, but with the steak teeth.
Charlamagne Tha God
Well, you look good, brother. You look good. Thank you, bro.
Skeet Carter
You know what I mean? You look good as well, man. Thank you, sir. Last time I saw you, you look, you know, you look better. You sold a lot more books. I think you was on your first book when I first met you and you was trying to figure out the thesis.
Charlamagne Tha God
I saw you could have looked better,
Skeet Carter
but, you know, like, now it'. We look like each other now.
Charlamagne Tha God
I appreciate that.
Skeet Carter
Thank you. Laura. Last time, you were the best person on the Diddy trial. Like, I didn't even watch the news. I just watched you come outside, and it was like you was looking over your shoulder every time, like. So he said and what he said in court. And I think you was, like, scared, but also you was, like, wanted to get us the news and you missed one day. And I was mad. I didn't know what happened.
Angela Yee
I had to take a break. It got a lot.
Skeet Carter
That's how, you know I was watching you. I'm like, where's she at? I kept checking. I kept checking you wasn't there.
Angela Yee
It was running me down.
Skeet Carter
But you did it. You did your thing.
Lauren LaRosa
Thank you.
Charlamagne Tha God
Speaking of the Diddy trial, how did you get the name Skeet?
Skeet Carter
Oh, I'm black. And the nicknames just don't make sense in the black community, so. Skeeter was my nickname since a child. So when I got older, I just got tired of the, er, the Skeeter, and I just went by Skeet. I just figured, that'll work. And then.
Charlamagne Tha God
Did it have something to do with my cousin Skeeter?
Skeet Carter
No, no, no. Cause I had a cousin Skeets when I was a child. I met him probably two times, but I don't even think they named me from him. I don't know where it came from, but my great grandma named me Skeeter, and I just. I never let go the name I've been. My mom called me Skeeter to this day. My dad, everybody. So, you know, just. I didn't make the name up.
Angela Yee
You never thought about, like, Skeet, like, how people.
Skeet Carter
No, because it's like it was already embedded in me, so I just never. If I created it, then it would have been something different, like, nah, I can't be, you know, but, you know.
Charlamagne Tha God
How old are you?
Skeet Carter
I'm 38.
Charlamagne Tha God
Oh, yeah. So you predate? Oh, I ski. Ski Mother.
Skeet Carter
Yeah, I'm Way before that. Yeah. Really? My dad nickname is Chew. I don't know what that's about.
Angela Yee
Oh, okay.
Skeet Carter
And then I'm Skeet and then my son is Trey. We all got the same, we got the same government name.
Charlamagne Tha God
So Chew, Skeet, Trey.
Skeet Carter
There you go. That sound like amigos ad lib.
Charlamagne Tha God
Do you think comedians nowadays are scared, Skeet? They're just finally experiencing consequences for saying wild shit, man.
Skeet Carter
Comedy is so different now. I think people are scared to, to really jump in different lanes and say different things because they're scared of the backlash. Prime example. I think Kevin Hart played it safe for so many years, you know what I'm saying? Like, I ain't gonna mess up my money. I'm gonna play it safer. I'm welcoming. I could get all the, the money, I could get all the contracts because I' ma just be funny to a certain extent. He didn't care. He kept his ears closed to like people in the, like saying whatever they saying, oh, he ain't Kevin this no more. Nah, he, he, he's, he's doing what he want to do. The main goal is to make the money and build a name and a brand for himself. So he's doing that. But then you have people that just, just, just total opposite and they want to prove a point. I can say whatever I want and this is what I'm gonna do. I don't care about opportunities. This is what I'm standing on, you know what I'm saying? So only person I know successful doing it that way is like a Dave Chappelle. But anyone else that's under that, like, you know, you know, Corey Holem, he don't care. He gonna say whatever he wanted to say. And you know, there's levels though, because
Charlamagne Tha God
there's Dave, but there's a cat, right?
Skeet Carter
Cat.
Charlamagne Tha God
There's a Chris. I think, I think most comedians for the most part can say what they want to say. You just got to deal with the consequences of it.
Skeet Carter
Yeah, but some people, you say it, you'll touch on it, but you don't deep, you know, jump into it where it's like, I know I'm going get, you know, something going to happen when I say this. Like, I don't, I don't see them people. I think Chris Rock, he plays it, he plays it in a way where it was like, okay, that was clever. That makes sense.
Podcast Promo Voice
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Skeet Carter
Dave is like a, I look at Dave like he in his own lane. I don't even consider him a comedian no more. He could talk. He did a speech for two hours, and the punchline was at the end. He'd be like, damn. Okay. So, like, he. He's different. He's on a different level. Me, I'm. I'm a. I'm a comedian that make. I talk about simple things and make it funny. So I'm gonna take you something that you live or deal with on your regular day, whether it's a shower curtain. Like, you know, you look at a shower curtain, like, is there something in the bathroom? But the way I talk about it and how I experience a shower curtain, depending on what girl house I'm at or, you know what I'm saying, you be like, damn, I ain't think about that. Like, you just think of a shower curtain is just.
Angela Yee
Because there is a difference.
Skeet Carter
You know what I'm saying? Cause you a grown woman, when you got the shower curtain, they got the inside part, the outside part with the magnets at the bottom side.
Angela Yee
Supposed to change.
Skeet Carter
Yes, it's supposed to change. Every new relationship you get in, you need a new shower curtain also just
Angela Yee
for your own body health. Cause they get a little dirty, and some people be washing them, but you supposed to let them go, get rid of them.
Skeet Carter
Go get another one. Cause one time I was washing up. I'm a new dude at this girl house, but she got old dude dirt hanging up in there. So that's crazy. Like, I shouldn't. I shouldn't get charlamagne dirt on me from being at chips.
Charlamagne Tha God
You ain't gonna get mine. I'm happily married. You got mine. Something wrong?
Skeet Carter
I'm just saying, you know what I mean? You be at work a lot, so if he be at work a lot, he's selling books. Yeah, you gotta read the room. But, yeah, I take simple things and make it funny, man. I think that that's my lane. I talk about relationships. I deal with all of those things and just make those things funny. So I don't really jump into politics. I might have a joke that's about politics, but I'll give it to somebody. I'm like, I don't want that. That's funny. I don't want that.
Charlamagne Tha God
What you. What did you think of the. The roast?
Skeet Carter
The roast. I look at it from a different perspective. I know.
Charlamagne Tha God
Because you're a comedian.
Skeet Carter
Yeah, I'm a comedian, so I love the. The. The lane or the level that. That. That Kev was at. I felt like he was. He tried. He did try to say some stuff this time because Kevin plays so safe. So it's like, okay. Oh, he cursed. I mean, like. Or he said something about somebody, or he did that. And it was dope to. To see that Naim. Naim killed it. I love to see that. Because people don't really. You know, they know Naeem, but they don't know Naim. So that was dope for him to step out and be like, oh, damn, he funny. You know what I'm saying? Cheryl Underwood did her thing. It was, like, so dope to see OG Cause that's what she is in a game to be. To shine like that on that platform.
Charlamagne Tha God
That's what I wanted. I wanted more of a Def Comedy Jam.
Skeet Carter
That's what I want.
Charlamagne Tha God
I wanted it blacker, to be honest with you.
Skeet Carter
You name two other three other people that you would have loved to see up there. Like, you know,
Charlamagne Tha God
I got.
Skeet Carter
I got a list because it's people that know Kev personally, like, that we on the road with, and we. They, like, they know.
Charlamagne Tha God
Like, that's what I felt like. I felt like it. Like, I thought Regina was more.
Skeet Carter
Because some more.
Angela Yee
And she was there.
Skeet Carter
And she was there.
Angela Yee
He had just interviewed her on the carpet.
Skeet Carter
Bill Bellamy.
Charlamagne Tha God
Yes. People that actually came up with him and know him. Yes.
Skeet Carter
You know what I'm saying?
Charlamagne Tha God
I thought Spank should have been up there.
Skeet Carter
Spank. He was up there. They just, you know, I. You know, I guess Mike. Yeah, he just. He just kept.
Charlamagne Tha God
I think Tiffany should have got some burns.
Skeet Carter
Exactly.
Angela Yee
I'm surprised that Tiffany didn't. Oh, yeah.
Charlamagne Tha God
Yeah.
Skeet Carter
I should have been up there. I know.
Charlamagne Tha God
Like, I mean, I know Y from Philly, but did.
Skeet Carter
Yeah, I know. Kev got my canon. Should have been up there. Nick Cannon definitely should have been up there. You know what I'm saying? So. Stuff like that. But I think it. It served its purpose. And it looked pretty dope. That was, like, a masterful weekend. Just Netflix is the joke. Being a part of that as a comedian that weekend was dope. I just. I filmed Comic View that weekend. So that's about the air.
Charlamagne Tha God
They bring Comic View back.
Skeet Carter
Comic View back. And Ski Car. Yeah, I'm on a new season, baby. Okay, I got that. There's a lot of stuff going on. What else? Bet I got. I got a new TV show.
Charlamagne Tha God
TV show Lot Patrol.
Skeet Carter
Lot Patrol got a new TV show, man. We're about to. That airs in June, so.
Charlamagne Tha God
Man, salute to whoever put that cast together. Cause they gave TK Kirkland an opportunity, man.
Skeet Carter
TK Times have changed. TK Talk. He act just like he talk.
Charlamagne Tha God
That's my guy.
Skeet Carter
I love T.K. that's my guy. T.K. i said, you can say them words a little faster, TK he would read them lines like he. Waiting for the words to come by. Yeah. I'm like, that's not in the script, TK but that's my guy, D. Raising
Charlamagne Tha God
Life Patrol, too, right?
Skeet Carter
D. Ray, he's number one on the call sheet. Carl Payne is number two on the call sheet. And Skeet Carter is number three on the. On the call sheet.
Lauren LaRosa
Wow.
Skeet Carter
Yeah, man. Times has changed.
Charlamagne Tha God
Darius McCrae's in there, too, right?
Skeet Carter
Yes, he's in it. Yeah. I think he had to go to child support court in between when we was filming, but he made it back.
Charlamagne Tha God
You said you think he wants you to put his business out there.
Skeet Carter
It was on the news.
Angela Yee
We talked about it.
Charlamagne Tha God
Okay.
Skeet Carter
All right. Yeah, I talk about everything that's. That's out. I don't talk about private stuff. I just talk about everything that's out there.
Charlamagne Tha God
But you got to talk about the private stuff. That's how you go. That's how you really blow.
Skeet Carter
Definitely.
Charlamagne Tha God
What happened with Cat and Shannon.
Skeet Carter
Yeah. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Charlamagne Tha God
That's all you need.
Skeet Carter
One good one.
Charlamagne Tha God
You can start now if you want.
Skeet Carter
All right. Jess. Hilarious. With Jess there, I got something. I got something to say about Jess. I thought she was gonna be here. I love Jess. She. She came to my show when I did the 50 Cent Comedy show out, and it was, like, for the super bowl or something like that. So we never. We. We met personally in person one time, but she was in Philly. This was a long time ago. She was beefing with Meek Mills at the time. Just had 39 security guards with her, right? Cause, you know, just run her mouth, she go crazy.
Charlamagne Tha God
I'm lying, man.
Skeet Carter
I swear to God, I wish.
Charlamagne Tha God
39.
Skeet Carter
It was. It was about 32, so it was like. So it's so many guards in there, right? I just want to come in. Cause, you know, she don't know who I am. I just want to come in, get a little quick pictures, say hi or whatever. They. When that door opened and they look back, and I was like, it's me. It's just. I'm just a regular guy, whatever. Like, it's just Skeet Carter. She came, and she was like, oh, all right. I was just making sure, you know what I mean? You know? Cause, you know, I got beef on these streets in Philly, and they crazy about me, and, you know, that happened. I swear, I lied to you.
Charlamagne Tha God
Not.
Skeet Carter
But then she came to the 50 Cent show, man. She left me a dope voicemail on Instagram. She was like, skeet, man, you one of the ones. You real funny, bro. First time seeing you. Da, da, da. You know, she don't. She gotta really like you to give you some props.
Charlamagne Tha God
I'm already telling you right now. Just gonna say you lying.
Skeet Carter
I got. Oh, I got it on my phone.
Angela Yee
No, not the voice.
Charlamagne Tha God
No, no, not the voice. 39. Security guard.
Skeet Carter
Oh, yeah. She'll tell you she was beefing with Meek at the time.
Angela Yee
Was she beefing up with him?
Skeet Carter
It was just. She said something about Meek, but she had to have a show in Philly, and when she got there, she was. She.
Charlamagne Tha God
She.
Skeet Carter
Because they was talking crazy in her comments, like, about Big. Let's talk about Meek. Because we, Philly, we the only people that could talk about Meek. Like, we could talk about him.
Angela Yee
Y' all are so true to that. That is really.
Skeet Carter
We could talk about Meek. He from home. Yeah, but you can't. You can't. You know what I'm saying? So she was going in, and then they had a little, you know, a little situation. But it was funny. It was cool.
Charlamagne Tha God
Damn.
Skeet Carter
Yep, yep.
Angela Yee
You gonna get another voicemail.
Skeet Carter
I love Jess. Jess is dope. I like Jess.
Charlamagne Tha God
What would success look like for you at this level in your career?
Skeet Carter
Oh, man, success would. So what happens if you ever come see me at a show and I'm in my zone and I'm doing my thing, man, you'll walk away as a fan of mine. You like, bro, you funny. Where did you come from? And it's not where I came from. I've been doing this for 15 years. But it's just now I'm being able to be on those platforms and levels for people to see me. So how I'm doing that one show at a time, one state at a time, touring. I want to be able to be on a platform where the world can see me at one time. That way, now I can create and get the people to know me. Right now I'm telling jokes, right? The joke. They're funny. They're hysterical. I write them in a way where you hold the. Your stomach. Yo, that's hilarious. But now I want you to. I want. I want to go talk about my. My life, my family and stuff that I've been through so that way you could get to know me on a personal level. But I feel like I'm still proving that I'm funny, you know what I'm saying? As doing comedy and stuff like that. You know, I, I, I started stand up and now, you know, I ventured over into, like, the Internet. So I'm doing skits and stuff like that, which I didn't like doing. But why, that's not my first love. I didn't jump into this thinking that, you know, maybe if like, even like this, I'm not sure that we, we in podcasting now. As long with radio, you might have gotten radio to do radio, but things change and you have to learn how to pivot. So Charlie used to tell me, he said, charlie Mack, Charlie Mack. Charlie Mack. He always say, man, Skeet, you wanna get to the next level, you gotta do new things. He said, you think? He said, will Smith is Will Smith. He if he doing social media, what makes you think that you can't or you not gonna be able to do it? And I was like, are you right? He kept beating that in my head. And then next thing you know, I started doing my little relationship skits. Like, I started doing, started with relationships, then it became side dude skits. So I'm kind of known for being a side dude online. I was doing that on the phone all the time, doing my skits, talking to the phone like, hey, baby. And I was getting all the women was following the skits I'm giving money out on, you know, on the videos and doing all this stuff. And then Mojo Brooks, he like, skeets, you popping, you blowing up, man. But you got to get out the car. He said, people got to see you actually act and start moving, show your body and doing stuff like that.
Charlamagne Tha God
Show your body.
Skeet Carter
Yeah, you gotta. I'm in a car.
Angela Yee
All you stuff.
Skeet Carter
I was my face in the phone. So he like, yo, get out the car. Go do, like, you know what I'm saying? So I start acting them out. I start acting them out, and then I start getting another buzz. And then next thing you know, I'm getting called for movies and I'm getting called for TV shows and call it so all these different opportunities, so just putting that out there. But where I see myself, man, I just want to be in the forefront, showing the world how talented I am and being able just to be me on a big platform. Like, I don't want to have to, I don't. It's not about me proving no more. I believe everybody in my team know, anybody that meets me, be like, bro, you really have what it takes. So I just want to be able to prove that, man, and enjoy it. So I got so many scripts and ideas in my Mind, I want to put out. I got, you know, stand up specials. I want to do so, so many, so many things. I. I own, I own businesses. So I want those brands to get bigger. I'm probably the first. I'm on my Soulja Boy. I'm the first comedian to own his own wine company. I got my own wine.
Charlamagne Tha God
What is that?
Skeet Carter
I get the wine. Get the wine.
Angela Yee
So when did you drop the wine company?
Skeet Carter
We dropped the wine. We. How many years? How many years we in?
Angela Yee
Oh, it's a pretty bottle too.
Skeet Carter
Yes, that's Rico rica vino. This is a. I have the first white blend. This is peach, mango, lavender, abstract infused with Caribbean rum. So it's a wine cocktail.
Angela Yee
And you got popcorn.
Skeet Carter
And I also own my own kettle corn business. You know what I'm saying? So.
Angela Yee
So, okay. Did this come during the hey baby phase or.
Skeet Carter
Make sure you.
Angela Yee
Cause this is like perfect. Pull up to your house on the side when you need to be stress reliever. Listen here, I thought you was done being aside. You got out the house and you be popping up in people's houses a little bit. But I thought you was trying to.
Skeet Carter
I pop up with some wine and some popcorn. It's the perfect way to chill, to wind up or wind down.
Charlamagne Tha God
By the way, that name is hard
Skeet Carter
Pop John Pop Jones from Philly.
Angela Yee
Man, you gotta get on my nerves.
Skeet Carter
Gotta stand up. You know, Pop Jones. So art, yeah, it's. It's a beautiful thing. This is direct to consumer. So you order that, you can scan on the back. Order more once. Y' all enjoy that. I have some. I can compete with any kettle corn ever. Like, anybody that take takes my popcorn, they like, hey, yo, this is so I don't play. Lauren, open it up, girl.
Angela Yee
What part of Philly you from?
Skeet Carter
I'm from North Philly. 22nd of diamond.
Angela Yee
Y' all be telling everything but the truth.
Skeet Carter
Do you think so? You can't even get it open. If you need help, just let me know.
Angela Yee
Here you go.
Charlamagne Tha God
Well, you know, she from Delaware, so she got a lot of experience with Philadelphia men.
Angela Yee
No, I don't have a lot of experience with Philadelphia men. No, I don't. My boyfriend is from Philly.
Skeet Carter
Oh, you got a boyfriend?
Angela Yee
Yes.
Skeet Carter
I ain't know that.
Angela Yee
He from West Philly.
Charlamagne Tha God
You going to need to do some more push ups.
Skeet Carter
You can't come through.
Angela Yee
If you. If you popping up in the. Hey, baby. The side inward.
Charlamagne Tha God
Everybody can see.
Skeet Carter
There you go.
Angela Yee
That is embarrassing.
Skeet Carter
That's how fresh it is.
Charlamagne Tha God
Everybody can see.
Skeet Carter
You see that you see that? Okay, I'm sorry.
Angela Yee
All right, let's see. Let's taste it.
Skeet Carter
Come on now.
Charlamagne Tha God
I know your boyfriend's from Philly.
Angela Yee
Yeah, he from West Philly.
Skeet Carter
I know you had a boyfriend.
Charlamagne Tha God
Philadelphia born and raised from.
Skeet Carter
Come on now. You ate one car. You got to get the salt.
Angela Yee
Cuz I didn't want to eat too much. And then my reaction would be, no,
Skeet Carter
you keep it a bean, keep it a buck.
Angela Yee
It's good.
Skeet Carter
It is.
Angela Yee
And it's light and it's fresh.
Skeet Carter
You open that bag, you smelled it. I don't play. This is it. Go fresh into the bag. All that they be eating up, I can't say I ain't going to talk about no other brand.
Angela Yee
If I close the bag, it's going to stay this fresh.
Skeet Carter
Yeah, that's why the resellable joint.
Angela Yee
Listen, you know what I mean?
Charlamagne Tha God
So during co, you was making popcorn
Skeet Carter
and it was after. No, I just start. So I'm, I'm like couple years in on my wine and I'm freshly. This is. We in the first year of pop John. And it's amazing. So I'll make sure, you know, if y' all need some. We definitely gotta have a bag sitting around somewhere if y', all. If she left. She did, she did enjoy it. She did love it.
Angela Yee
Yeah. My, this is, it's good.
Skeet Carter
Thank you.
Angela Yee
Like, product wise, most people would go like merch.
Skeet Carter
Yeah. So this is a different world, different time, man. This, this. Back in the day, they selling DV and as comedians and all that stuff, man, it's a, it's a product game now. You got to have something that a customer is going to enjoy, finish complete, and want more of it. You know what I'm saying? So that popcorn, when you finish. When I leave a city, people are ordering the, the, the, the, the, they, they going in shopping, they love it, they enjoy it. I want to stand on a great quality. I can't look a certain way. I don't have my products look a certain way or have the same type of texture or taste and all that type of stuff. So it's, it's, it's a blessing to have that. We're doing a lot of things. My popcorn been in more movies than me, but popcorn is we product placement. We've been doing stuff with that and, you know, just build it. I'd rather build my own than get to a certain level. And then people are trying to pay me to, you know, to be part of their brands, you know what I'm saying? So I'll have this. And then if I get. You know, someone might say, damn, you sell. How much? Okay, cool. Let's. Let's work a deal out and do something. So we're looking to expand and probably sign more artists, and they. They also can sell.
Charlamagne Tha God
I feel like that part of the game right there for comedians. Kevin. That Kevin. Kevin inspired a lot of that.
Skeet Carter
A lot. I think Kev expired. So when. So, all right, look. When I started comedy 15 years ago, I. I was. I was a barber, so I was cutting hair. And 40 is Kevin Hart's brother, right? So I used to get my hair cut in the barbershop. I used to live in North Philly, but I used to come up to Ioni with my dad on the weekends. So 40 would be in there,
Charlamagne Tha God
who
Skeet Carter
was baldy, Monty, all these people that know Kev. So when my transition going into the barbershop, Kev was just leaving the barbershop. So he just did paper soldiers. And Kev Cuthead, too? No, his brother did, but he always was in the barbershop all the time, right? But so when he left and I got there, it was like a replacement. And people would be like, yo, this is like, Kev all over again. Remind you, I don't know Kev like that, you know? So it was like. They kept saying it, like, damn. Like, I'm just being myself. I talk trash, you know, cutting hair, getting into fights and all. Like, people keep saying, yo, this is like, Kev all over again. They kept saying it, but then this time, Kev is just little old Kev. So now he's like, yo, my brother, 40. Like, yo, my brother about to be on TV. He don't. He's a movie. Okay? My brother about to do Def Comedy Jam. He's like, we support. Like, okay, yeah, that's what's up. And my. This is 15 years ago. So this is just. Okay, My brother, my brother, my brother.
Charlamagne Tha God
And then it'd be longer than 15.
Skeet Carter
No, it has, because he was like. He already was, like, doing. Doing stuff, but it wasn't this big, amazing stuff that he's doing. It's still watch my little brother. You know what I mean? And then you keep seeing it, and time is going on, and it's like, oh, well, dang, he really doing some things. And then people keep saying, excuse you funny. You should try to do comedy. I'm like, no, that's kind of different. I can make y' all laugh in the barbershop, but I can't make y' all laugh on Stage that's kind of different. But then you keep seeing this man keep getting bigger and bigger. It's like, well, maybe it's something in there. Then I have a child about to be on the way. You know what I'm saying? It's like, all right, I got to figure something out because if I gotta go get a job, I needed to go do that. But if I need to try this comedy, let's go try to do the comedy. So that's what I actually did. And then being from Philly, people always compare you. So I was start doing shows and it was like, oh, who you think he is? You know what I'm saying? He like. Or they want to say compare us. And it's like, I never thought I would get an opportunity.

So like how do you at the funny AF right now?
Angela Yee
I was gonna ask you how you felt about that.
Skeet Carter
Yeah, it was shout out to Tata Sharif. She was first episode. She killed us my sis, she from Philly. But we did Heart of the City. That was kind of art funny af. And that was my first time being on tv, man. And that was a Kevin Hart situation. And I never thought I would get an opportunity because I thought he was gonna say, you from Philly, you look like me, dark skinned, da da da, boom boom.
Charlamagne Tha God
You thought he would hate you?
Skeet Carter
Not hate. But it's just like things happen. I used to tour with Michael Blackson. Michael Blackson. That was the first comedian I went on tour with. He'll tell you, he said ain't no room for both of us. We both hate him.
Angela Yee
He hated on you cause you dark skinned.
Skeet Carter
He hate. He just said I can't be on tour with him no more. Why Mike Blackson. I'm gonna Tell you how he kicked me off the tour. Mike Blackson kicked me off the tour in a nice way. He said the name of this mother sucker. The name of the tour is called Ugly is the New Cute. You not ugly, so you can't be on the tour. I'm like, what type of dumb shit is that? So that was this nice way, Mike, you know, you did. Mike Blackson kicked me off the tour. Cause he said. He tried to say I ain't. It's called the Ugly is the new Cute.
Angela Yee
And this before you got your new teeth.
Skeet Carter
Oh, this is before. And I was ugly at the time. And I definitely could have stayed on the tour. He full of it, man.
Charlamagne Tha God
You know, See, Kev, not a hater, though.
Skeet Carter
Kev not a hater.
Charlamagne Tha God
Actually one of the most supportive people. And if he can throw you an assist, he gonna throw you that.
Skeet Carter
He will. Yeah. You gotta just be. You gotta be in that moment. Cause Kevin smile you to death and do like. He'll smile. You'll leave, like, yeah, Kev about to do something.
Charlamagne Tha God
I got you. I got you.
Skeet Carter
Yep, it is. Yeah, I got you, man.
Charlamagne Tha God
Just keep.
Skeet Carter
Yeah, that's Kev. All day long. Yeah, he. That's what I hate, that laugh. He did that the whole roast. Kev, you gotta get a new dad going to laugh. This is annoying. He just did it the whole time.
Angela Yee
So knowing how supportive he is in real life. Right.
Skeet Carter
That's how he did it, though.
Charlamagne Tha God
He doing it right now, watching this.
Skeet Carter
That's how he do it. That's how I can't do. Hey, hey, shut up, Rock. But that was. Yeah, that's Kev, man. I love that boy. But I'm sorry.
Angela Yee
Knowing how supportive he is in real life, like, right. Like, that jump started your career, does it? How do you feel when people give him the backlash of, like, George Floyd jokes? And Kevin should have did this. Kevin should have said that Kev don't care.
Skeet Carter
Like, Kev wants. He wants. He wanted. His goal was kind of like someone that wanted to be able to take care of their family, be successful, and be kind of the best at what he does. I think he accomplished all of that, like, you know. Cause if he cared what people said, he would have. He would have tried to accommodate people with his comedy specials that he was dropping. Like, you know what I'm saying? Like, he would have. Because people talk about Kev all the time. And I. And Spank is from. Spank is on the streets. So Spank hear everything. Spank be like, yo, you know what they saying? Like, and he'll tell him. He don't care. Kevin. Okay, I'm dropped all of these specials. I'm gonna drop all these movies. I'm make all this money. And he's the person that's looking out for, like, a lot of the comedians. He got so many opportunities. Lol. Network. He put out so many comedy specials for other comedians. We don't have. We didn't. We don't have Def Comedy Jam. We don't have. Comic View just came back, but that was gone. There's no platforms for comedians to do anything. And he's the person that was, like, giving those opportunities. So I feel like he's doing all the things he want to do, and I think that's what makes him feel good. And he.
Podcast Promo Voice
And he.
Skeet Carter
And he cool.
Angela Yee
Like, honestly, he's the one bringing back Comic View.
Charlamagne Tha God
Yeah, he's bringing back. I was about to say he did
Skeet Carter
last year's Comic View with Mike Epps was hosting and all that stuff. This is a new one.
Angela Yee
Okay, got you.
Skeet Carter
And I think. Yeah, I'm not sure if he's involved with this one.
Charlamagne Tha God
I'm not sure, but I know he did for something. It was something. It might have been a specialty thing where he did, like, four.
Skeet Carter
That was the first time him and Mike was on stage together when they had they. You know, they thing or whatever. So it was. That was pretty dope.
Charlamagne Tha God
Did you ever want a plastic cup?
Angela Yee
No.
Skeet Carter
You know what? When I think. When I. I think I did want a. Just a shot glass, just. Just a little bit. Because when they was popping, like, you know, from the city, I'm like, damn, they killing it. Like, just popping.
Angela Yee
They still popping.
Skeet Carter
No, I'm saying about, like, when it first started, like, when it. Yo, like, Kev was like. They doing one thing about Kev. He gets the opportunity. He put me on stage at. I forgot what tour it was, but I'm there. He like, what's up, Skeet? You want something? You want to get on? I was like, you gonna let me perform on, like, your show? This big old theater? Yeah, yeah, go ahead, Go ahead. And then, like, so he give you opportunities. Like, he's pretty dope. But I did. I think there was a small part of me wanted to be a part of, you know, just a shot glass. Just gimme a little bit. You know, they got the real. The little red cups, too. Yeah, I just wanted a Dixie cup. I just wanted to be, you know, be a part of that just for a second.
Charlamagne Tha God
And you opened up for Martin.
Skeet Carter
Yes, Martin that, man, to be honest, number one, you've been lying the whole time. No, no, no, no, no. To be honest, number one, funny. But number two, man, this game, this industry is built off of relationships, honestly. And when you have certain people in your corner that, that, that. That sees you fight for this stuff, seeing you in your moments when you down, when you crying, trying to figure it out, trying to pay your bills, sleeping in your car, doing all those things, when opportunities present their self. Charlie Mack, that's the guy who made. Made that situation happen. You know, Charlie, he. I don't know what he did. You know, Martin, you know what he said?
Charlamagne Tha God
They've been around for they partners. Damn it.
Skeet Carter
They've been around forever.
Angela Yee
Yeah.
Skeet Carter
No, for real, it was love. So. And then being on a Martin show and they're fans of you and want to see you perform is dope. Like Martin waiting by the TV to watch you and. And, you know, backstage is dope. When his family is flying in to see you perform, his sisters and all that type of stuff, That's. That's dope. You know what I mean? At least he appreciated cause shout out to Tyrese. But Tyrese. Tyrese don't think I'm funny at all.
Charlamagne Tha God
That's Tyrese Gibson.
Skeet Carter
Tyrese Gibson. He does. He's only room for one dark skinned man when he's around.
Charlamagne Tha God
Okay, yeah. How the hell did Tyrese get to this conversation?
Skeet Carter
Because that's my guy. And that's Charlie. That's Charlie Mack, right hand. And so, you know, we like to start. We like to start, you know, drama with each other.
Charlamagne Tha God
Tyrese think he a comedian.
Skeet Carter
Yeah, he do. Tyrese think he is. And he don't think. He say excuse. So is you funny? Like, what do you do? Like, he know I'm a comedian, but
Charlamagne Tha God
Tyrese can't take a joke.
Skeet Carter
No, no, you can only go.
Charlamagne Tha God
But so far.
Skeet Carter
Yeah, before he. Yeah, Tyrese, man. Boy, me and Tyrese, if I knew how, if I. I saw him, he played in too many movies. I know he's athletic and all that stuff, but we got into it in New York one time and. And I wanted to do something. I wanted to say something and do something, but I kept looking at him like he might know some, you know, some moves or something like that.
Charlamagne Tha God
Y' all got into it for real.
Skeet Carter
Not like on a real way, but in a way of. I was at his movie premiere, right? Dion Teller. The movie was called Black and Blue. So this is around the time when Charlie Mack is taking me all around la. We Doing we doing? We hugging women, kissing babies. I'm meeting everybody in Hollywood. This is old Teefskite, though, right? So I'm kind of. You still curious? Who is this guy? You know, right now I look like who I supposed to be.
Angela Yee
What year was this?
Skeet Carter
This was right before the pandemic. Okay, okay. So we going. We going viral and just. We going crazy. So now people are seeing me all over. So I'm at Tyrese Black and blue, you know, premiere, red carpet, everything. You know what I'm saying? Charlie's there, we making. Everything is good. But I'm everywhere Tyrese is. But this Tyrese Knight, you know? So Tyrese is like, you know, yeah, Charlie, what we doing? Charlie making sure he good. Yeah, we going this way. He's secure and everything. Getting on the elevator. Everywhere he go, I'm right there. So at the wild, Tyrese was like, who is this nigga? Who is this? Why is this guy around? Why is he. He like Charlie like that skeet, he's the comedian. Is he like. I ain't never seen him do nothing. Is he funny? Like he doing. He doing all of this, right? But we had like this private dinner. This is Deon Teller there. This is Tyrese, the other co star of the film. Everybody there. So I was like, I'm feeling embarrassed because, like, everybody know I'm a comedian. Like, they know they like ski cuz the comedian, the Tyrese is like, who is this nigga?
Charlamagne Tha God
Right now it's time for you to be funny.
Skeet Carter
I couldn't. Cause I was kind of. I'm from Philly. I was hurt a little bit, and I'm like, I can't fight Tyrese right now. I can't.
Charlamagne Tha God
I ain't. They fight. I said be funny.
Skeet Carter
Nah, I couldn't be funny. Cause it was a serious moment. Deon Teller told me, I'm about to put you in a movie. I'm about to put you in a meet the Meet the Blacks part two and all this stuff. So I'm around. I just want to be around, have my face in the place. And then, you know, I'm looking Deion, like, yeah, I got you. We gonna do all of this stuff. And then I go over to Tyrese, who is this nigga, right? That's what he say out loud. I'm like, what the hell? I'm hurt, man. I feel like. I feel little. You know what I mean? And it was like. It didn't. That was one incident, right? So we made up after that.
Angela Yee
You ate dinner, you finished it Oh, I definitely.
Skeet Carter
Cause I wasn't paying. They was paying. I think it was part of the. You know. Then the other thing, I went to Tyrese house. We was filming a music video. It was called Black Success. I think Rick Ross was in it and Trina, it was all these people in it. So I'm in the video, right? But Ramon, he ain't asking me to be in a video. Somehow I got there because Charlie back was there, right? Okay. So I'm in his house now. So he come down, you know, he about to film the video. He see me. He like, I'm in his house now. He's like this everywhere, right? So Tyrese got this love. We got this love hate thing. Like, why is he everywhere? This is like, you know. So anyway, they put. He was like, you know what? Since he here, we're gonna utilize him. They put me in the music video, right? So we in this. Trina. Trina's we in this. This is. If y' all look up the video, it's called black excellence. We're driving. It's up Is all these cars lined up in his driveway. They all old school cars, like, so they needed someone to drive. Trina. So Trina's in the back, and this other young lady, she's a musical artist. So we're. Everybody's getting in the car, and we're about to drive. They want. They want to do one take, one shot. It's like 20 cars lined up. So they was like, okay, we gonna just move. Get in the cars, move them up, and we're going to open the doors. Everybody's going to get out. We only got. We ain't got enough time to be doing a whole bunch of takes. We're doing one take. So they roll actions. The guys, major singing, right? Charlie Major. She's your queen to be all this. Start the car. Let's go. Start the car. Now we put all the cars supposed to drive. It's about 10 cars in front of me. All the 10 cars is moving forward now. Tyrese said, listen, I'm gonna put you in this car. Do not crash this car. Do not let nothing happen. We in front of my house. Don't mess this up. I got you. I got you. All right. Got you, bro. I had to throw bro in there. Tyrese, I got you, bro. Right? I'm his bro now. So they go, they wrote, action. It's time for me to move the car. I ain't realized it's a stick, right? I don't know how to drive a stick. So all the cars moving except for my car. So the director like, cut. Why you ain't move the car? I'm like, I didn't know it was a stick. I didn't know. So once Tyrese come out and see it was me, he like, that's why I ain't want this nigga around.
Charlamagne Tha God
He can't do shit right.
Skeet Carter
Give him an opportunity. He can't drive. So it was like. I was like, so Tyrese. I'm like, I don't know. I kept asking Charlie. I'm like, I don't know if Tyrese really liked me or not. Cause I'm starting to mess up a lot, you know? And so then we just start doing, like. I started doing stuff to try to be smart. He had a premiere in la. I'm like, charlie, get me tickets to his premiere. I'mma show up. Charlie started laughing. Cause you know Tyrese don't want to see me, right? So he show up. He come out there taking pictures. I was like, hey, Tyrese, you mind if I get a photo with you? He like, oh, my God. Who got this nigga here? So. But we cool, man. They called me for my birthday.
Angela Yee
Do we actually see you in the video? I've been watching?
Lauren LaRosa
I don't even see.
Angela Yee
Did he cut you apart?
Skeet Carter
Yeah, I had a beard. Oh, I had a beard. I got glasses on.
Charlamagne Tha God
That's Rick Ross. Stop lying.
Skeet Carter
So when you see me. Cause I'm like, when they walk up, it's gonna be real short. Cause I think Tyrese told him to cut all my parts out, so it should be one part left. And when. Trina, when they walking into the mansion, you gonna see me. I got a beard.
Charlamagne Tha God
You ain't gotta squint that hard. Lauren.
Skeet Carter
Yeah. You trying to make it look cr.
Angela Yee
Like, I see. I see Pastor Gray, right?
Skeet Carter
They all walking into the house.
Angela Yee
Yeah.
Skeet Carter
So it's going to be. I got a beer and glasses. Cuz I used. I played in the movie Here Goes
Angela Yee
Trina, that is not you.
Skeet Carter
You see? See, they don't look like me, do it? That's me.
Angela Yee
And they kept you in a dark shadow, too. They didn't want you in here. They didn't want you. Look, you could barely see his face.
Skeet Carter
That's me right there. Look. I swear that's me in this scene. They kept. They.
Angela Yee
I don't know if you even mentioned this.
Skeet Carter
You can't see, but it's the truth. It's part of my story.
Charlamagne Tha God
You're my story.
Angela Yee
You're right.
Charlamagne Tha God
You know the thing I like about Y Mac, though. Charlie Mack might have you around, but he not gonna put you in no position that you're not ready for.
Skeet Carter
That's true.
Charlamagne Tha God
You know what I mean?
Skeet Carter
That's true.
Charlamagne Tha God
Because he could just say, yo, he could just use his. His cachet to get you a lot of probably looks. But he. If you're not ready, what's the point?
Skeet Carter
What's the point? He. He definitely. He's. He's stern with that. He's not going to deal with anybody that he doesn't believe in or think that they have it. Sometimes he will tell. Let them know that or know that you have it before you know. You know what I'm saying. You might say, man, you know what? I'm done. This ain't for me. He like, no, bro. Trust me. Trust the process. Continue to keep going, keep doing this, that, and the third. And you. We might argue. Me and Charlie, we argue plenty of time. When I first. We. We broke up one time, like, you know, like, we broke up our business relationship. It was years ago, and we just like, all right, the same for. Yeah, we just. We gotta separate. But we made our way back.
Charlamagne Tha God
And what caused it?
Skeet Carter
Oh, the honest one. So he was like, excuse, if you want to do this comedy thing, we gotta go to New York. You gotta get with Keith Robinson. We trying to follow the blueprint of the Kevin Hart way. So, like, Keith Robinson put Kevin position. Let's go work these comedy clubs at the Cellar. Let's do this, that. And the third. One of the first things was they wanted me to change my name. He's like, we can't be calling you Skeet. I was Skeet with the clippers or something. Cause I was a barber. I was like, well, that's my name. What y' all want me to. What you want me to do? He said, use your real name. I said, I don't wanna use my real name. Right. What's your real name? I got like an actor's name. Like, let's see my name. You about to. Should I be saying it online? But yeah, I didn't want to use that. So they was like, israel.
Angela Yee
That's good.
Skeet Carter
No, the last. The last name throws it off.
Angela Yee
Carter McCartney.
Skeet Carter
No, that's not my real last name. Oh, yeah.
Charlamagne Tha God
Oh, shoot. I don't even got the last name. It just say Israel.
Skeet Carter
Israel is my first name. My last name.
Charlamagne Tha God
That might get you in a lot more doors if you say your name Israel.
Skeet Carter
But how are we coming to the stage? Give it up for Israel Odric.
Angela Yee
Not gonna lie.
Skeet Carter
What's the actor's name?
Angela Yee
No, but it is.
Skeet Carter
But that's the Idris Elba name.
Angela Yee
But aren't you trying to. I mean, not trying. You are on tv.
Skeet Carter
But my name. But Skeet Carter has just always been, like, the name for me. And I resonate with it. Like, that's me. When you say. People say Israeli, turn around. Like, that's my son name. That's my dad name. You know what I'm saying? So I would use it, but it just already established me being me. So, anyway, well, I'm gonna go back to the story. So we in New York, Keith Robinson here. We're gonna. We're gonna. Hey, dummy. We're gonna. We're gonna do this show. We're gonna put you in front of the white folks. You gotta perform. And I'm used to doing black shows. Like, they got music. Come on stage, you come up with the energy. What's up, y'?
Charlamagne Tha God
All?
Skeet Carter
How y' all doing? This one is just. Give it up for. They wanted me to. Oh, they brought me on stage. Give it up for Izzy O. Who is that?
Charlamagne Tha God
O, who is that?
Skeet Carter
Give it up for isra. What? So I get on stage, I'm lost. Now I gotta be Israel. Cause that ain't me. I'm not up there. How y' all doing? Like, trying to perform. It was trash, okay? I was like, whoa. I ain't never bombed like this in my life. Charlie in the back with his head down. I see him. I'm like, this is crazy. Keith Robinson over there. Like, this dummy ain't funny, right? So I'm like, damn. I'm just losing on all levels, right? So that was one show. I think we wouldn't go home. I said, yo, man, I feel bad. Let's just go. He said, nah, no, dummy. We got to go a couple more places. They would put me back on stage
Charlamagne Tha God
again as Izzy O. Every time.
Skeet Carter
Izzy O. I'm like, who is this nigga? I'm like, tyrese, who is Izzy O? Go up there. Bomb again. I think we bombed. I think it was two or three times we went home. It was a real quiet ride back to Philly. Charlie dropped me off, and he never caught me again. And damn, Charlie, that was. This what he brought. We ain't talking for years. What? Yeah. He was just like, yeah, you need time to yourself.
Charlamagne Tha God
What made him finally call you back?
Skeet Carter
He ended up popping. So we. I end up doing a show. I was touring with Coco Brown. Shout out to Coco Brown in Baltimore. And what he did. Was we end up talking or something. I was like, man, I think you might want to come see me. I'm totally different. I'm totally better. I mastered the craft. Come see me. He was like. He said, all right. He said, but if I come see you, I gotta bring all the people that saw you bomb in New York. He said, we gotta come back to the scene of the crime. So he had got. It was a car full of people that all went up to New York. Cause we all drove up together. He got all them people that came to Baltimore. They bought. They brought me out on stage. Skeet Carter Kemelson State Ski Carter. I went out there, did 25 minutes. They were standing out in the lobby doing a slow clap. It was like, bro, you different. You really did your thing. And then from there on, he was like, all right, let's get back to it. And then we've been making stuff happen ever since, man.
Charlamagne Tha God
So that bombing motivated you?
Skeet Carter
Yeah, it helped me. Cause it showed me what I needed to see. Like, you always think you good. You always think that. You think it's your time. You think it's your moment, and that's what you think because you're in it. But you know, sometimes you have to understand this is not your time. Like, I'm glad. Before the pandemic, we was lit. I filmed my comedy special. That's when I met you in person. We came up to the other radio station. He was like, yo, Skeet, you sell out this show. We come back and do an interview. At that moment, at that time, I thought I was ready. But then I look at myself. I wasn't in shape. I didn't look the way I wanted. I didn't have like a fan base or following outside of Philadelphia. I didn't have like, you know, I got so much stuff happen from then. I just got polished, mature, and know that I really wanted. Did the Wild N Out thing, did the movies self tape and acting. And so now I'm. I was ready for everything I have now. When I. When I did this lot patrol TV show, they were looking at me like they're not used to comedians being packaged like this. Oh, damn. You doing scenes in one take. Okay, all right, cool. You did that Edge just spin to it or. I did that. Oh, we want to keep that. Oh, Edge just been on everything. Help us rewrite. It was just crazy.
Charlamagne Tha God
You've been doing this on social media for that, so.
Skeet Carter
It's been a hell of a journey, man. I really. I'm not sure if you guys are all, I'm like this as well. But in this industry, you don't get to appreciate stuff. You always work into the next thing. You accomplish something, and people more happy for you than you are happy for yourself. And it's like, yeah, I did that. And then you're going for the next thing, and then it's like, you keep going for the next thing and the next thing, and then people got to say, slow down, bro. Like, do you know what you just accomplished, bro? Like, you just. You just did this. You just sold 1600 seats and did your own special. You just. You tour with Martin Lawrence. You did shows with Jamie Foxx. You. You know, be all these things, and it's like, okay, let's. Cause life is short. You'll go through all of this. You. At the end, I'm losing family members. My aunt, she has cancer right now. So when I get back in the city, I try to go visit her, see her. She's. The chemo stuff's not working for her, so she's like, all I want from you, all I want is a hospital bed. So, like, I'm have my. I'mma leave comfortable at my house. And it's like, that's my aunt. That's my mom's sister. And then my grandfather passed away with me doing, like, through my journey. My aunt, my grandma. It's just like, damn. You look back, you're living and progressing and accomplishing, but you're away and you're missing your family and you're missing your loved ones. I try to come. You know, I always there for my. My kids and stuff. But needless, I mean, all this to say, like, we gotta appreciate the. The moments that each thing we accomplish, because it might never know. It might be your last. So, like, did you enjoy that? Was you excited?
Angela Yee
Yeah.
Skeet Carter
Did you celebrate that win, you know, instead of. You know, So I have the. I look at things now, like, I already won. I'm a long way from the barbershop. Okay. Like, you know what I'm saying? Like, I ski. Carter, you have. You already won number one.
