Not a damn dime. Not a damn dime. I went to prison as a young dude. Young. 15. On my 15th birthday. Exactly. My mama hadn't nervous, send me $50. And I sent it back to her. I was like, no, no. I put myself in this situation. You know what I'm saying? And if you're a man and you in jail and in jail is different, but when you in prison, prison pretty much runs itself. So you got to get on your hustle, your grind. You got to learn how to play spades, poker. You got to play the. The bookies. The bookie came from prison, right? So my mom had 11 kids. She couldn't afford to send me no damn money. So I couldn't expect her to send me no money. But when I got out, I was kind of homeless. Cause I was like, I'm a man. I done been in prison because I violated the first day after I got out the first time. So after I went on the run, I was like, I didn't want to run no more. I went back. And after I got out, which last month made 31 years.

Congratulations, man.

Amazing.

And I really was homeless, so I had to go get it. So I tried hustling again and went back to jail. And when I was out on bun, I was like, I gotta figure out a way outta this. And that's when I started doing music. And I fell out with two or three dudes. Cause they thought when I made it, that they made it.

Dudes, meaning family members.

[Trick Daddy]

Nah, these discreet dudes. Okay. But my family members. My family was. I came up like, the lights was in my name when I was 2 years old. So I started off rough. So when I. When I. When I did get a few dollars to help them, it was not from rap. You know what I'm saying? Because I still didn't have a house. I didn't have enough credit. I had money, but I didn't have enough credit to buy a house. And I didn't understand. I'm like, well, I got the money where they was like, well, you need credit. You need history. So I had it. But I raised my older sister, five kids. I raised them. I was like, come on, y'. All. Go with me. I'm gonna show y' all something that we didn't Have a chance to see. But other than that, none of my brothers and sisters never really asked me for nothing. Everybody realized that, you know, you got to get on your own and times are harder now. Don't get it. A lot of people getting misconstrued about what's going on on Instagram and Tick tock and Facebook. That is not real life for 95 of these people.

Absolutely.

These people do their best, look their best. Pretend to be the riches and the. And the girls know they angle, so they, you know what I'm saying? They booty. Do you know what I'm saying? But when you see me on Instagram, my stomach is still big. I'm not, I don't, I don't know. I don't know what my angle is. So then I, I, I gotta deal with homeboys that I was in prison with, homeboys that I grew up with. And some of the first crackheads, those was my, they children was my friends. Like the crack babies was my schoolmates, you know what I'm saying? So understand all that. But to.

When you learn to say no the.

First time they asked me, really, damn, I ain't have nothing once you had.

Something when you started doing in the industry.

[Trick Daddy]

I learned to say no after, okay, my first million dollars, I split it up. I took 250,000 of it and split it up with everybody at Slipping Slide Records. That helped me get to that point. I busted down the middle for what? Because I wouldn't have got there without them. Because the music back then, the music game was difficult, especially getting played on New York radio. Oh, no, they don't want to hear nothing. You got to say, if you from South Florida, wasn't they making their own.

Money because you were signing them?

[Trick Daddy]

No, actually, after. After a while, after the first. The first album didn't really blow. By the time the second album came in, it was. We was pitching in, paying bills, you know what I'm saying? It had to. When I was doing shows, they couldn't get paid. After every show, we like, all right, you get paid on Tuesday. We had to flip some. You know what I'm saying? We had to flip it. And so when I got the money, the first million dollars, I was like, okay, I'm gonna bust it down. I was like, put everybody in the room. Get everybody. You know what I'm saying? A percentage of it. My two best friends, you know, I get. I broke them off, you know, I bought my mama a house which only put like, what, 25,000 down on it? But, But Then once I got a house and a car and furniture, I was broke. So when I learned Uncle Sam.

You forgot about Uncle Sam.

That's what I learned.

So you bought everything. And then Uncle Sam knocked on the.

Door, and then they. I didn't know that. They penalized me and they. And they fired me every 24 hours the full amount.

You got to owe them before they get to that.

So that's why I tell a lot of athletes, like, if you make a certain amount of money, you. You might well give it back to your community letter, because they gonna get. They get it.

So you. You can give it away and it's a write off. You could donate it. The nonprofit is a write off. But after I learned that, I was like, I'm like a million dollars. First of all, the taxes are like, like 40.

Because if they had a problem, they. They didn't want went today, that's their video, right? So they didn't want went to the Internet, right? They could have just handled their business or however they felt, I don't know. But I like Ja. I was just talking about J day before yesterday. I was telling somebody like, ja Rule did us no wrong. We did Ja Rule wrong. We abandoned Ja Rule. Everybody, especially the people of this, of the city of New York, they let some beef between him and other people get between the music and the hits that he brought us year after year after year, constantly, you know what I'm saying? But I like Ja.

What do you think people still underestimate about your impact on. On rap, especially sovereign rap?

Well, I had. I had an opportunity to get Jay Z on the now remix, but I found out how much it was gonna cost and I said, nah, I'd rather not do that. Me, I never went and got the hot R B singer. Never went and got the hottest rapper. I never rode nobody coattail. I never jumped on nobody tour. Ain't nobody opened the door for me. Everybody from everybody that was on Slippage Live Records. I helped them and I put them on all my albums, all my songs. Co could tell you that. And when it was a problem, one time when TI Would say it was the king of the south and some people wanted me to say something about it, I say. I say, I'm the Dade county mayor. If you want to be the king of the south and you don't like it, you go say something to him about it. I'm not that person. I grew up on music from the East Coast, west coast and the Southwest, you know what I'm saying? Plus the Midwest. So I think that they don't realize that I told Miami on. On our back. Only thing we was known for, good cocaine and fine girls. When I came out with. With certain records, like the Nail record. When I did the Nail record, after I played Nan was on the radio so much in New York. They said, all right, we got a show for you. We booking you. I was like, what? They said, the Tunnel. I was like, hell, no. I say, I heard about the Tunnel.

We did the Tunnel. Turn it out. But when I first heard it, I was like, man, Tunnel. Hold on, man. They trying to sabotage me or something.

The Tunnel is a legendary nightclub in.

The city that used to be crazy. There was no VIP section. The biggest. The biggest artists would be there. Luke did it when Luke did it. Like, it would be stupid. Like it was one of those things.

And we did the tunnel and we killed it. And I said, boy, now we made it. So me, along with Juvenile and then Master P, we got east coast radio play. When they didn't expect us to do the kind of music that they did. All they wanted was the party music, the bass music, what we call Booty Shaking song. And they tried it. My first record was a scarred record with Luke. So that record got me a deal because the same label that Luke did his album or his Uncle Luke album on is the label that gave me the deal when I went to sign with Slip N Slide. But they didn't. They didn't know how to market me because they kept trying to make me do booty songs. So I did one called Going with your bad stuff. I was like, I'm not rapping like that no more. So what y' all want to do? I did what I had to do to get here. I'm here now. Let me do me and Craig Calvin. Atlantic Records say we gonna buy Warlock Eye. We gonna let you do it. We gonna see if you know what you talking about. And I dropped now. And they was like, what? Need a hook? I said, don't need no hook.

I said, that is the hook. It was like, well, what does Nam mean? I said, if you don't even know what nan mean, how you gonna tell me I need a hook? So I did. But I did all the records that they wanted me to do. I did the Sugar and Let's Go and to take it to the house. But I told him and shut up. I told him, but if I did shut up and take it to the house, because I was gonna shut up by myself. But I say I need to get my label mates on this record, too. I need to get my label mates on Take it to the House. And I need to make sure on every album, I could put Rick Ross, I could put Trina J. Shin, Jabon, Money Mark Co. I could put all them Lost Tribe. I'm putting all them on my album. And they was like, all right. When the first time a lot of people heard Jeezy, he was on my album. And when we was recording, the Atlantic Records was there. They was like, man, what is this? I was like, man, you said I could do what I want to do. And it's one of my records. I said, y' all keep around around around. Get stuck in the ground on that record. TI Came in this Flip. I called Flip. I said, ti dis you on one of my records. I'm like, you know, I ain't got nothing to do with it. How you feel about that? He was like, let him do it. What do you want to do, gangster? I was like, all right. I don't play like that. When. When they came to me for features, I let them know, okay, you're gonna give me 50, but you're gonna have to pay. Tear that slipper slide. And Atlantic might want a little money to. To clear it. I didn't do what people did to me. When I put Luda on, Sugar Def Jam played with me. They came back with like, you can't release it yet. There's Luda's putting out a project. I was like, what? That's my single. My single come out next week. They said, he can't do it. So I called the old friend of mine, the real queen bee, Lil Kim. I said, I need you on this record. She said, send it to me. That next day. She did it that next week we did the video. That's why it's two versions to that record would play no games. I had Little John Eastside boy with Fat Joe on it, classic. But that's my record on his own. That was a favor in return for another song. So when I went to. When you went to Target, Walmart, you went to specs. All those albums, if you bought based on the true story from Target, it's got two different songs on it, and Walmart got two bonus songs. And I did it like that. And nobody ain't know. They was like, how was you doing it? I was meeting with the buyers. Nobody don't know I was meeting with the buyers. I'm meeting with the people that buy the records. I'm hanging with them. I would get in the car and ride for Miami, head down to New Orleans through Alabama, do New Orleans hit Texas hit straight up and go to Cali in a rental car. Me and Michael Hodson, God bless my boy because he's dealing with stage four cancer right now. But we rolled by ourself and I met all those mom and pop stores. That's how I was able to go platinum. That's why when they try to compare me to even the younger dudes, I was like, well, they getting the money. They getting way. They getting 50 times as money as we got fast. But they ain't getting no property. They buying too much jewelry, they buying too many cars, and they have too many babies with too many groupy ass.

Hoes so they're not building a real fan base.

They not they. Because next week they fans is over there on somebody else coattail, you know, and then their music is not going to last forever. See, I did music that was forever. And when I did that, I was able to go platinum. I remember one. One album went platinum so fast. By the time I came, I did, I was in Boise, Iowa, Idaho, Rapid City, Des Moines, Sioux City. I was in places that I ain't never heard of in real life. And I was in the people. And I had 1500, 2000 people in the club. And I'm like, whoa.

When I came back after 42 days, my album was platinum. A lot of these dudes, they. They took the spins and they rigged it up way before. This is after payola. They read that a spin, they say, okay, he got this many spins, he platinum. How ain't nobody buy it, but you know, it's neither here nor there. And I've never. And this. I'm gonna end this here. I've never ever been nominated for an award. What you mean? I've never been nominated BET award at all. Never been nominated, not for one single music award ever. If they. I might have been nominated for award like a video award. And all my videos were authentic and people love them because we did it on our own. All my videos are paid for in cash, like I said. Now statute of limitation is over. We paid for all our video in cash. And I have never wanted a million dollar video. Most people probably spent was probably 200, 250.

And I never did none of that. And the first time BET reached out to me with something serious, dealing with the BET awards was three years ago when they say, we want you at the BET award. We want you to present award for me. And I was like, okay, I'm coming. When I got there, I was like, what award? Oh, you giving Trina the lifetime achievement award. I was like, what? And it broke my heart, but it's my sister and I did it anyway. Yeah.

Did you tell her how that made you feel when he called you presented an award? Yeah.

I mean, Trina came up with you. There's no Trina without Trick. We learned of Trina because of Trick Daddy like that.

But that package deal from the beginning, that's. That's when I knew music was changing. That's when I knew the box was over. The basement was gone. 106 and Paul was over. That's when I realized what was going on. The people was Buying up all the networks to get rid of rap music. And now the only rap music that's really selling is the girls trying to sell. They talk about they and they body. And the boys is drilling, talking about killing each other.

Petrina was one of the first people doing that, though.

But. But we. We mimic Nan and. And Trina have them. The baddest off of what the people we grew up on, the listening to. Off of the. The pox, the little Kim, the biggies. You know what I'm saying? The. The Ice Cubes and Scarface. That's what we mimic our music off of. But we. We only did that as on singles. When you went to our album, our music was well rounded. When you go to these other albums is. Everything is sound the same. Everybody's talking about the same thing. I can't talk about killing all of the album. I can't talk about drug dealing. I could talk about the country. I could talk about the kids. You know, that's why I get a slogan for Treat Love the kids in. And I don't think people made music make music these days the way we made it. You know what I'm saying? A lot of samples that wouldn't get cleared. They getting cleared now because there's no other way to make money.

Listen, man, I love Miami music. I feel like y' all don't get credit for being lyricists when you talk about you or Rick Ross. Kodak Black. Even though Fly flies in from Miami. Fly. Y' all can rap some rapping ass from Florida.

I remember E Class was years ago. I'm talking when E Class, when Ross and Flow Rider was just popping E Class in Charlotte. Man, I got two artists. I got Rick Ross for the street, and I got goddamn Flow Rider for the pop people.

I don't know what happened. I don't talk about a person. But Rick Ross, he did something that none of us, not even I did. I had the Dunk Riders.
