Let's get to it.
Lauren LaRosa
I'm the home girl that knows a little bit about everything and everybody.
Terence Floyd
You know she don't lie about that, right?
CJ Toledano
Lauren Came in hot.
Lauren LaRosa
Hey, y', all, what's up? It's Lauren LaRosa. And this is is another episode of the Latest with Lauren LaRosa. Now this is your daily dig on all things pop culture, entertainment news, and all of the conversations that shake the room, baby. Now, normally we would check in behind the scenes of the grind right here, but we have a conversation that I know is going to shake the room and. And I want to get right to it. So I was able to sit down and interview Terence Floyd, who is the brother of George Floyd. He is also heavily involved with the George Floyd foundation and a ton of things that they do and namesake of George Floyd. Now, Terence Floyd is, you know, someone that I've worked with in the past that I've, I've done stories with and just been in communication with as he, you know, continues to keep his brother's name alive in all of the right ways and the positive ways. He had reached out to me because he saw the segment that we did on the Breakfast Club about the roast, about the Tony Hinchcliffe George Floyd joke, which we talked about in the previous episode of the Latest with Lauren LaRosa. Go back and take a listen to that if you have not already. And. And he wanted to have a conversation about it. So before we get into this conversation, I do want to just remind you guys of why this all came about. So Kevin Hart hosted his first ever roast. He did the Kevin Hart roast. It was done live on Netflix. It went down Sunday, May 10, on Mother's Day. And it was a hit. Everyone's talking about it. There are millions of people watching. It was produced very well. It was executed very well. And there was a lot of funny that went down, including Kevin Hart himself taking the mic and closing out the night. Cat Williams and Kevin Hart made up during the night on stage. And Katt Williams had some jokes. Cheryl Underwood also did a set as well, Regina Hall. It was hosted by Shane Gillis, Naim Lynn of the Plastic Cup Boys, who are like, you know, Kevin Hart's circle. Like, those is his. Those. His people also took the mic, did some jokes. Tom Brady popped out as well. Draymond Green, Lizzo, Tiana Taylor. Like, the celebrities were there. They were in the house. It went down. Pete Davidson also making headlines for a Kanye west joke that he dropped. Kanye west was actually in the building and a lot of people didn't know. But there has now been more download and conversation since more people have been able, I think, to, like, sit down and watch the roast about what Jokes they believe went too far. And a lot of them being the racial jokes from the white comedians. Now, Tony Hinchcliff Kill Tony is the platform. He is known for being raw, being very edgy, and leaning into race a lot. Here is the joke that he said about George Floyd that has George Floyd family and a lot of people pissed off. Let's take a look.
Tony Hinchcliffe
It's true he lost his gig hosting the Academy Awards because of some homophobic tweets, but you'd be homophobic too if you were eye level with everyone's. He got into a fist fight on a private plane. Proof that no matter how much money black people have, they're still just gonna act like ninjas. Was fighting. Like Bill Cosby Hart is a black comedian from Philadelphia. And like Bill Cosby, women don't know when Kevin is inside of them. You've done good, though, Kevin. The black community is so proud of you. Right now, George Floyd is looking up us at us, all laughing so hard that he can't breathe.
Lauren LaRosa
So now that brings us to our conversation with Mr. Terence Floyd in reaction to this joke. So I'm going to get right on out of the way and get to the combo.
Wheezy Wtf
This is weezy. Wtf? From decisions, decisions. You know, a lot of us grew up not fully trusting the healthcare system. And honestly, the system has given us plenty of reasons to feel that way. But now it's time for us to take control of the conversation, to take control of our sexual health, learn the facts, ask questions, and advocate for ourselves. That's how we start changing the story. So let's talk. We like to think HIV is something that affects other people, but it is hitting our own community hard. Black women make up about 13% of women in the US but account for nearly half of all new HIV diagnoses around women. And being proactive doesn't mean you just don't trust your partner. It just means you trust yourself enough to stay in control. So know your options, ask questions, and protect your peace and your body. That's real power. Because protecting yourself isn't embarrassing, it's responsible. Sex is normal. Protecting yourself should be normal, too. Actually, it's kind of badass. Taking control of your sexual health is grown woman energy, sponsored by Care for the Culture from Gilead Sciences.

Lauren LaRosa
First of all, thank you for joining me. I feel like we always have to have conversations around these things. So, you know, I apologize for that. But I think, you know, sometimes the conversations are needed for people to hear from you guys as George Floyd's family firsthand. So I know you had saw some of the comments that we had made at the Breakfast Club and in response to Tony Hinchcliffe in the George Floyd joke that was, you know, said at the Kevin Hart roast, and you wanted to kind of talk a bit about that. So just let me know, number one, did you watch the roast just as a Kevin Hart fan or, like, did hear about it afterward?
Terence Floyd
I heard about it afterwards. And I understand a roast. Let me get. Let me just clarify that I understand the rose. And from what I understand about a rose is about what, you know, what you joke about about that person specifically. So the reason why I felt kind of un. Uneasy is because I was trying to figure out what did that have to do. What kind of punchline was that? You know, and, you know, and I'm gonna speak. Speak, from my point of view is comedy roasted the roses without that one person. Comedy is to make people, you know, laugh and enjoy themselves. Is not supposed to be where you feel some type of way after you leave the room. You're supposed to leave with healing and happiness, you know, and that. That. That wasn't the case. And I'm not. I'm. And I'm speaking from my. From my point of view about my brother and from my family. But I'm. I'm even going to go as far as the other topics with Bill Cosby. Those are other people's issues. And you don't know what kind of trau tragedy that. That, that family was going through. So stick to just who you supposed to be roasting. That's just my feeling on it.
Lauren LaRosa
And, you know, in us covering this, I started to kind of like, research because when I first saw the statement, there was a line about the rep who spoke out for Gianna and the George Floyd organization that said something about you guys as the family, mentioning his obsession with your brother, with George Floyd. So it made me, you know, in the room just hilarious acts. Like, was this the first that he mentioned something? And I went back and I realized that he had gotten some pushback back in 2024 when he joked about George Floyd or made a reference to George Floyd during the Tom Brady Rose. So, you know, with this being the second time, do you guys feel like, you know, I mean, the first time it shouldn't have happened, but would it be in the second time? Do you feel like it's even more of a disrespect or like, does that kind of compile onto things for you?
Terence Floyd
I, I have a totally different perspective on this. I, I would say it's totally disrespectful. It's totally disrespectful. But if it's going to be allowed and he's, he's not, he get pushed back from us. But do he get pushed back from his pockets? Do you get pushed back from anything else? If you don't get pushback from what's really going to affect him, then he's going to keep doing it, you know, and that's a disrespect from him, and it's a disrespect from the people that allow him to do those acts and suit and approve those jokes. Because I'm quite sure I've been on a few arenas where, you know, questions, I have to approve questions before they ask on question. They got to approve commentary, jokes and everything like that. So for, for them to allow it, you know, Netflix, a major station like that, to allow that. I, I just, I didn't, I, I took it as that topic wasn't supposed to be touched. Just like they said, don't talk about his children. You know, is. It's just certain topic death. I don't think there's anything funny about death or tragedy. You know, it's nothing, it's nothing funny about that. If you want to make fun of your own experiences with death or tragedy, that's what you, that's what you have to deal with within yourself. But don't. When it comes to death and tragedy for other people, that's, that's. That to me, that's off limits.
Lauren LaRosa
Who do you feel like the responsibility should have been on to, to say, okay, no, you can't do this joke? Do you feel like that's Kevin Hart that should have stopped that, or do you feel like it's Netflix or both?
Terence Floyd
I feel like, you know, first and foremost, I feel like it was, it was, it was the producers, the Netflix, because do you have to approve it before they air it? You know, my thing with, with Kevin, and I'm a fan, I'm A fan of Kevin Hart. Dude is really funny. You know what I'm saying? I, I, I feel like my fan, my family and their friends, they, they said, you know, it should have had not the Will Smith action. With the Will Smith energy, where you stand up.
Lauren LaRosa
Kevin Hart should have responded differently.
Terence Floyd
Right, right. Responded right then and there, like, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, hold up. Because I remember Kevin Hart and a few other celebrities was at the Minnesota funeral. You know what I'm saying? So I feel like in that respect, like, wait, wait, wait, wait. Hold up, hold up. That one is too far. But then again, me watching some clips of certain other jokes, a lot of it just felt it wasn't tasteful. Like, the whole thing about them saying he's so short, they hang him on a bonsai tree. I'm not gonna be doing that. I've got a nice PG short joke that I'd like you guys to be a part of. Okay. Kevin is so short. Kevin's so short that they're gonna have to lynch him from a bonsai tree. That, that. What kind of. That's not tasteful. Like, I wouldn't even laugh at that because that's like you, you bringing up our past. Like, what, what. What our ancestors had to go through. And that's funny to y'? All? No, it's not funny at all.
Lauren LaRosa
Got it. I mean, I don't. I think that that's pretty much to the point. I don't know if there's anything that I haven't asked you that you want to share. I would, I would ask you, I guess, today. One of the other things that they mentioned was, like, Gianna and George, Floyd's daughter, your niece being teased in school and how stuff like this doesn't help. I mean, I don't know if she, how she's doing, if she's okay, if she's like, does she get direct response from things like this? Because they're so vi. Getting older now. You know what I mean?
Terence Floyd
Yes, she was, she was, she was six when this happened. She's 12 now and still got to deal with. You know what? I was talking to Travis yesterday, and we were saying, we, we, we. We realized something always is talked about or happened or somebody say something or bring up controversy or whatever around on my brother's name when it's nearing his, the anniversary of his death. It happened with this, it happened with Charlie Kirk happened with, you know, Lil Yachty. It just, it's always something when it's nearing his anniversary, and it's like, okay, we say keep it, you know, keep saying his name. But we, we don't want this narrative. This is crazy. Every, every year we gotta keep coming on, you know, talk shows and stuff like that and podcast and tell them to tell people how we feel about what they're saying. You don't get the picture yet.
Lauren LaRosa
And you mentioned Charlie Kirk. I know that, you know, a lot of the conversation has been like, okay, well, there were Charlie, Charlie Kirk jokes made as well too. Are we wrong for laughing at that? Is it different because George Floyd is a part of our community and Charlie Kirk isn't like, do you feel like anything flies when it's outside of the black community or just across the board?
Terence Floyd
I'm on the side of right is right and wrong is wrong. I don't care who family it is. Joking about death or tragedy is a no, no for me because just like a joke about my brother affects me. A joke about Charlie Kirk, a joke about Cheryl Underwood's husband, the dude's father that, that passed away on 9 11. Yeah. Death and tragedy is off limits because, you know, may. It may make a person crack a smile at that time because they. They laughing and try not to cry. But then later on when they get home, you don't know what's going on. I know it don't feel good. You know what I'm saying? Because you got to think on that. You got to think on what, what was said. Not only what was said, but now you got to think on, man, my loved one is not here now. You're not around that crowd where you got to show your pearly whites. You by yourself. You thinking on that, that, that, that holds a lot of weight. And that is exactly what Gianna is going through and she's only 12. So right, right now it's, it's not even a. It's not. I'm. I'm with my brother, my boy Travis. It's not, it's. It's.
Lauren LaRosa
We.
Terence Floyd
We upset, but we.
Lauren LaRosa
We.
Terence Floyd
I'm focusing more on the well being of my niece. This gotta stop, man. All these, all these jokes and, and then, then, then it was a, it was a part in there where we always say, you know, my brother looking down on us because we talking positive. The fact that he said that he's looking up.
Tony Hinchcliffe
You've done good though, Kevin. The black community is so proud of you right now. George Floyd is looking up us, at us all laughing at so hard that he can't breathe.
Terence Floyd
We were stuck on that when we heard it. He was like he's looking up, looking up from where? Are you trying to say he's in hell? So this is not. This is not what comedy is supposed to do. It's not supposed to have us thinking about what you. What you meant, what you meant. Oh, we supposed to laugh to heal. Heal from this. That roast was supposed to be for Strictly Kevin and what people think about him and make him laugh and enjoy his counterparts and his. His. His comrades and stuff like that. Not for anybody from that rose to be getting backlash about what somebody said.
Wheezy Wtf
This is wheezy. Wtf. So if this could be done differently, what would you advise? Kevin Hart? What would you advise Netflix? How would you advise them to go about this? Like if you could speak to them right now, what would you say?
Terence Floyd
I would. I would say the same thing I say about when I do. I do panels with a friend of mine and we do panels about the fashion industry and how they make. They make major mistakes. In the fashion industry, too. So when it comes to those, those, those meetings in the boardrooms, put people in place, those. Netflix, put people on those boards in place that understand the culture and they understand. No, don't, don't, don't do that. Don't do this before, before it even becomes an event. When you're in the planning stages, plan it right, plan it correct for every culture, because Netflix is all over. Everybody watches it. So for every culture, don't just crack jokes about this culture and that culture and then think it's going to fly. No. Make it an even playing field for everybody so everybody can enjoy the comedy.
Lauren LaRosa
Got you. Well, thank you for joining me. I'm sad it's always on these terms, but, you know, you got a home over here, so.
Terence Floyd
Yes, yes, yes.
Lauren LaRosa
We appreciate you. And thanks for tuning in, too. We appreciate it.
Terence Floyd
Indeed. Indeed. Will do.
Lauren LaRosa
I mean, look, I think if you're a comedian, you choose to tell a joke, it may be funny to some people, it may not be funny to others. But I think, you know, at the hands of what this was, what the George Floyd joke was, the fact that the roast had nothing to do with George Floyd. But, you know, I think the white comedians are just attacking the black community in general because, and I don't even know if I'm using the word attacking, but they throw in shots at the black community in general because Kevin Hart is a black comedian, which we all understand. But when hearing from a family member and you're hearing about, you know, the implications that this has on people in real life, it does beg the question, did the jokes go too far? Now, I want to hear from you guys. Get in streets, get in tweets. Let me hear from you. Do you think that the jokes went too far when it came to this George Floyd joke and a lot of the other jokes I know, they were also joking about Cheryl Underwood and her husband suicide, which we discussed in a previous episode of the Latest with Lauren LaRosa. And other racial undertones were mentioned as well. Let me know what you guys think. I tell you guys, every single episode, y' all could be anywhere in the world talking about all of these things, but y' all choose to be right here with the memes, my lowriders. I appreciate you guys and I'll catch you you in my next episode.

Podcast: The Breakfast Club | The Black Effect Podcast Network & iHeartPodcasts
Air Date: May 13, 2026
Host: Lauren LaRosa
Guest: Terence Floyd
This episode of The Breakfast Club centers on the recent controversy surrounding a George Floyd joke made by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe at the Kevin Hart Netflix Roast. Lauren LaRosa sits down for a candid, heartfelt conversation with Terence Floyd, George Floyd’s brother, to get his and his family’s direct reaction to the joke, its impact, and the line between comedy and harm. They discuss appropriate boundaries in comedy, the responsibilities of those involved (from performers to producers), and the real-world effects on the families of those referenced in insensitive ways.
“The black community is so proud of you. Right now, George Floyd is looking up at us, all laughing so hard that he can't breathe.”
— Tony Hinchcliffe (05:46)
Terence didn’t watch the roast live but later saw the clip. He acknowledges understanding that roasts are supposed to target the honoree, not unrelated and deeply painful tragedies (11:15).
"From what I understand about a roast, it's about what you joke about that person specifically... So the reason why I felt kind of uneasy is because I was trying to figure out what did that have to do... what kind of punchline was that?"
— Terence Floyd (11:22)
He expresses discomfort with using death or tragedy as a comedic punchline, not only for his family but for anyone:
"There's nothing funny about death or tragedy... That's off limits."
— Terence Floyd (13:35, 14:10)
Terence points first to the producers and Netflix for approving the set, stating that tasteless, hurtful material should have been flagged before airing (15:17).
"It was the producers, the Netflix...because you have to approve it before they air it."
— Terence Floyd (15:30)
He also wishes Kevin Hart had intervened on stage ("the Will Smith energy")—especially given Hart’s known connection to George Floyd and solidarity at previous events (16:05).
Terence cites another roast joke comparing Kevin Hart’s height to lynching from a bonsai tree—rejecting it as another unfunny, damaging reference:
"You're bringing up our past. What our ancestors had to go through. And that's funny to y'all? No, it's not funny at all."
— Terence Floyd (16:40)
"She was six when this happened. She's 12 now and still got to deal with... always is talked about or happened or somebody say something or bring up controversy or whatever around on my brother's name when it's nearing his, the anniversary of his death... every year we gotta keep coming on, you know, talk shows and stuff like that and podcast and tell them to tell people how we feel about what they're saying. You don't get the picture yet."
— Terence Floyd (17:49)
Lauren asks whether joking about tragedy is ever appropriate, regardless of who’s targeted.
Terence’s stance is clear:
"Right is right and wrong is wrong. I don't care who family it is. Joking about death or tragedy is a no, no for me ..."
— Terence Floyd (19:13)
He describes how such jokes may elicit nervous laughter, but the residue is pain and sustained hurt, especially for loved ones.
"He was like, he's looking up, looking up from where? Are you trying to say he's in hell?"
— Terence Floyd (21:21)
"Put people in place... on those boards in place that understand the culture and they understand. No, don't, don't, don't do that. Don't do this...Plan it right, plan it correct for every culture, because Netflix is all over... Make it an even playing field for everybody so everybody can enjoy the comedy."
— Terence Floyd (26:14)
“Comedy is to make people, you know, laugh and enjoy themselves. Is not supposed to be where you feel some type of way after you leave the room.”
— Terence Floyd (11:34)
“There’s nothing funny about death or tragedy… If you want to make fun of your own experiences with death or tragedy, that's what you have to deal with within yourself. But don’t… when it comes to death and tragedy for other people, that’s… to me, that’s off limits.”
— Terence Floyd (13:59)
“This gotta stop, man. All these jokes… it was a part in there where we always say, you know, my brother looking down on us because we talking positive. The fact that he said that he's looking up…”
— Terence Floyd (20:55)
“Make it an even playing field for everybody so everybody can enjoy the comedy.”
— Terence Floyd (26:14)
This episode offers an important, deeply personal look at the boundaries of comedy, the responsibilities of those who craft and air content, and the profound, lasting impact such “jokes” can have on real people. Terence Floyd's testimony underscores that humor can heal but must never deepen real wounds—especially those rooted in public tragedy.
“Right is right and wrong is wrong. I don’t care who family it is. Joking about death or tragedy is a no, no for me ...”
— Terence Floyd (19:13)
