It's Wednesday May 13th. From the black Effect Podcast Network, I'm Mimi Brown. This is front page, and here are today's biggest stories. Plus, today on the underplayed, the bipartisan bill in Congress that could change the funding picture for HBCUs. Stay with me. If you're feeling financially squeezed right now, trust me, you're not alone. Gas prices are climbing, inflation is back up. And according to new polling, most Americans say the war with Iran is now hurting them financially. So when President Trump was asked Tuesday at the White House how much that financial pain is motivating him to reach a deal with Iran, his answers raised a lot of eyebrows.
President Trump
Not even a little bit. The only thing that matters when I'm talking about Iran, they can't have a nuclear weapon. I don't think about American's financial situation. I don't think about anybody.
Mimi Brown
That comment comes as the national average for gas sits at $4.50 a gallon, up sharply since the war with Iran began earlier this year. Inflation also rose up in April, its fastest pace in nearly three years, driven largely by higher energy costs. In a CNN poll out this week, 77% of Americans say the president's policies have driven up the cost of living in their own communities. 75% say the war in Iran is hurting their finances. My check is getting smaller and smaller by the day. Yeah, it's just these diesel prices is out of control. The president now floating a proposal to suspend the federal G tax, though Congress would have to approve that. Lawmakers on Capitol Hill say it's not enough.
Political Commentator
Quote, Trump's gas tax gimmick wouldn't end his war, wouldn't open the Strait of Hormuz and wouldn't bring down the cost of crude oil. There's no evidence it would even bring down costs at the pump because companies could just pocket the savings. It's another distraction.
Mimi Brown
And while the White House says the focus remains preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, many Americans say their focus on something much more immediate, the cost of everyday life. You've probably been hearing the word hantavirus a lot this week, especially as health officials continue monitoring a deadly outbreak tied to a cruise ship that is now spreading across multiple countries and several US States. So here's where things stand first here at home. Health officials in Illinois are investigating a possible hantavirus case in Rockford. Officials believe that person may have contracted the virus while cleaning a home containing rodent droppings. And here's what's important to note about this case. It is not connected to the cruise ship outbreak overseas. Doctors Say this is the more common way hantavirus appears in the United States, typically through exposure to infected rodent urine or droppings in enclosed spaces. The Illinois patient experienced mild symptoms, was not hospitalized and is recovering. But the international outbreak tied to the cruise ship is far more serious. Health officials now say there are 11 confirmed or suspected cases connected to that ship, including three deaths. One French passenger remains in critical condition in Paris and is currently on an artificial lung machine after developing severe respiratory and heart complications. And here in the US Two Americans connected to the ship are being treated and monitored at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta inside the same high level bio containment unit used during ebola. Out here's Dr. David Fitter. He's the head of the CDC's hantavirus response.
Dr. David Fitter
Hantavirus is a known virus. It is a known pathogen and that helps us. We know what we're doing and we know how we're responding. The system worked. We've moved quickly. We identified the passengers, we identified a way to get them back. This is a coordination across the federal government, with aspro, with dhs. But more importantly, this is across state and local health authorities as well as the hospitals like Emory. We understand that this is an uncertain and stressful time for the passengers. They've gone through quite a bit and we're trying to help them and this is a priority for us. But the priority, big priorities for us are the safe and healthy return of the passengers, but also safe and healthy American communities. And this is what we're working toward.
Mimi Brown
While Maryland is monitoring two residents who may have been exposed during a flight with an infected passenger. And Virginia health officials are also monitoring at least one resident who was aboard the ship and has since returned home.
Health Official
What we do recommend is the active monitoring and follow up of all of the passengers and crew who disembark for a 42 day period. That doesn't mean 42 days from now or from tomorrow. It actually means 42 days from the last point of exposure.
Mimi Brown
But here's the part that's getting a lot of attention right now. Some passengers are being voluntarily monitored by health officials. Others are isolating at home. But there is no nationwide mandatory quarantine in place right now. And That's a decision U.S. health officials are making at this moment.
Dr. David Fitter
What we're looking at right now is monitoring with modified activities. We want to make sure with modified activities that people are staying sort of by themselves at home. We're working with the jurisdictions and also with federal government, but with the passengers as well, to make sure that they are comfortable with the plan and the modified activities is to stay out of crowded venues to also avoid crowded spaces if they need to go out for essential activities to ensure that they are appropriately wearing any protective equipment. With that, and this is again truly to be a very conservative approach, I do want to reiterate, we know this virus, we know how it acts, and this has worked well in the past to ensure that there is no further spread.
Mimi Brown
And for now, the World Health Organization says there's still no sign of a larger global outbreak. Every Wednesday on Front Page this is what we do. One story that didn't get the coverage it deserved this week because some of the most important news in the country right now isn't happening on the front page. Here's today's two U.S. senators Raphael Warnock and Katie Britt have a bill moving through Congress that could change the funding picture for historically black colleges and universities. Warnock is a Democrat from Georgia. Britt is a Republican from Alabama. Here's what the bill does Right now, Federal funding for HBCUs is scattered across more than a dozen agencies. Different applications, different rules, different deadlines. Most HBCUs do not have the grant infrastructure of a Harvard or Stanford, which means even when the money is technically available, schools often can't get to it. The Warnock Brit bill consolidates it one federal portal streamlined applications. It is moving and almost no one is covering it. If you went to an hbcu or if your child is at one, your community has one tell somebody this is happening. That's the underplayed if you work in tech or honestly you've ever worked in corporate America at all. This next story is probably going to catch your attention because Google is now paying $50 million to settle a racial discrimination lawsuit brought by black employees who accus the company of unfair hiring, pay and promotional practices. The lawsuit was originally filed by a former Google employee who alleges that black workers were steered into lower level positions and face barrier to advancement inside the company. Other former employees later joined the lawsuit, turning it into a larger class action case. As part of the settlement, Google will make payments to workers and implement several key policy changes, including additional pay equity reviews and more transparency around compensation practices. Now Google, for its part, is admitting no wrongdoing and maintains it committed fair hiring, pay and workplace policies for all employees. The settlement comes as diversity, equity and workplace treatment continues to be major conversations across the tech industry and corporate America more broadly. That's your front page. [02:22 - 04:37]
Rising gas prices ($4.50/gallon average) and inflation are impacting Americans as the war with Iran continues.
President Trump was asked if the financial pain felt by Americans would push him to seek a deal with Iran. His response was notably dismissive:
President Trump: "Not even a little bit. The only thing that matters when I'm talking about Iran, they can't have a nuclear weapon. I don't think about Americans' financial situation. I don't think about anybody." (03:32)
Public reaction:
Trump proposes suspending the federal gas tax, but critics call it a "gimmick" unlikely to help consumers.
"Trump's gas tax gimmick wouldn't end his war, wouldn't open the Strait of Hormuz and wouldn't bring down the cost of crude oil. There's no evidence it would even bring down costs at the pump because companies could just pocket the savings. It's another distraction." (04:25)
Focus remains on Iran’s nuclear ambitions, but daily economic struggles dominate public concern.
[04:37 - 08:30]
"Hantavirus is a known virus. It is a known pathogen and that helps us. We know what we're doing and we know how we're responding. The system worked." (06:18) "Big priorities for us are the safe and healthy return of the passengers, but also safe and healthy American communities. And this is what we're working toward." (06:48)
"What we do recommend is the active monitoring and follow up of all of the passengers and crew who disembark for a 42 day period." (07:17)
"We want to make sure with modified activities that people are staying sort of by themselves at home....This is again truly to be a very conservative approach. I do want to reiterate, we know this virus, we know how it acts, and this has worked well in the past." (07:46)
[08:30 - 09:42]
A bipartisan bill co-sponsored by Senators Raphael Warnock (D-GA) and Katie Britt (R-AL) aims to overhaul federal funding for HBCUs.
Mimi Brown highlights the lack of media attention and urges listeners connected to HBCUs to share the news:
"If you went to an HBCU or if your child is at one, your community has one—tell somebody this is happening. That's the underplayed." (09:34)
[09:42 - 11:02]
Google agrees to a $50 million settlement in a class-action lawsuit brought by Black employees alleging unfair hiring, pay, and promotion practices.
Google admits no wrongdoing:
"Google, for its part, is admitting no wrongdoing and maintains it committed fair hiring, pay and workplace policies for all employees." (10:42)
This settlement underscores ongoing debates about diversity, equity, and corporate responsibility in the tech sector and corporate America.
President Trump:
"Not even a little bit. The only thing that matters when I'm talking about Iran, they can't have a nuclear weapon...I don't think about anybody." (03:32)
Political Commentator:
