Welcome to the carpool podcast with Kelly.
Kelly
And if you're not into Halloween, I get that, but like you have a full beat on your house. Like you have the giant, you have the six, you have the ten foot skeleton outside your house and you can't put a. And your clothes are on Halloween, like, so what was it all for?
Liz
And Liz, I do kind of get that, that, that itch, you know, that real. It's like, I wish I was special. Your mom time off start.
Kelly
Welcome back to the carpool podcast with Kelly and Liz. Happy Wednesday.
Liz
Happy Wednesday, Kel. How are you?
Kelly
Well, I'm doing something like so fun today, you guys.
Liz
Kelly is like so crazy for this.
Kelly
Going on like a wine day with my. Some of my mom friends.
Liz
Kelly and her mom friends love to just take a Wednesday off and go hang out.
Kelly
Well, it's a combination of like summer stay at home moms, some work part time, some work full time. And we find that like, I actually think whatever. We find that weekends are harder for all of us to get away because then it's like at least some of.
Liz
Your kids are in school. So our kids are in school and. Or you already have child care in.
Kelly
Place and we already have child or. Yeah, exactly. So anyway, me, Nicole, my friends are hitting the wineries on like a Wednesday.
Liz
That's just like so crazy. Kelly was like, oh, by the way, I'm not working on Wednesday. I'm going to the winery with my friends. I'm like, what is your what?
Kelly
I know, that's so like not me.
Liz
No, but I am happy for you. This is so not you. You have not had a group of friends in a long time. And so I am happy to see.
Guest/Ad Reader
That you and your girls are just.
Liz
Like going on a. Gonna wind down on Wednesday.
Kelly
We're gonna wind down on Wednesday. And I am. It's really not so much me as I'm just like really proud for some of the other girls in this group for just like getting things on the calendar. Things on the calendar. And you know what else? Everyone follows through, which is just like two things I haven't always experienced in my life. Yeah, get it on the calendar.
Liz
Get it on the calendar.
Kelly
Like empty. Like, oh, we need to get together. They're like, well, how's November 5th? And it's like, okay. They're like, let's all take off work and go to the wineries.
Liz
It's like, okay, yeah, sure. Sometimes it's just someone throwing out the idea out there. Cuz more times than not the idea is also Going to sound good to someone else.
Kelly
So by the time you're listening to this, I'm on a party bus on the way to winery on a Wednesday.
Liz
Okay, well, I'm happy for you.
Kelly
Thanks. Thanks. How's your day gonna be?
Liz
Well, since you are just taking off, I'm gonna do some work and. Because someone has to. And actually, one of my best friends is getting married, and I'm in her wedding. And actually, I don't think I've said this on the podcast, but one my other one best friends moved into my neighborhood. She's like, a few houses down from me. So we see each other all the time now. And we're both bridesmaids in this upcoming wedding, and we are going to go.
Kelly
Try on bridesmaids dresses on Wednesday.
Liz
On Wednesday. Because I was like, well, Kelly's taking the day off, so, girl, you want to go look at dresses? Like, today would be a good opportunity because I have my child care set up and Kelly's not working, so let's go do it.
Guest/Ad Reader
So we're going to go try and dresses.
Kelly
Do you know, is it like, what's this bride's vibe? Is she like, here's the dress, or she's like, here's the color.
Liz
Here's the color.
Guest/Ad Reader
Here are six dresses.
Liz
Try on all of them and then narrow it down to, like, your top three. So.
Kelly
Oh, and then she's gonna. Because. Because what? Everyone picks the same one.
Guest/Ad Reader
Right? Right.
Liz
So we'll see how they look.
Guest/Ad Reader
We're both.
Liz
She's more postpartum than I am, which is never fun to try on dresses. And we're both kind of playing with the idea of, like, will they. Won't they be pregnant by this?
Kelly
Well, I mean, if you could just, like, stop with the pregnancy rumors.
Liz
Like. No, I like. I like spinning them around.
Kelly
I never thought.
Liz
Because then when I am pregnant, people are gonna be like, she's. She always acts like she's pregnant. Like, she's not really pregnant. But then I will be pregnant.
Kelly
Well, I just can't believe how the bump ahead costume just, like, really took people for a loop there.
Liz
No, that was so dumb of us too, Kelly, because we were like, oh, you should get this, Kelly. And you know, people are gonna think I'm pregnant. And then we still decided to put that one on me when I'm the one that circulates more rumors.
Kelly
No, I think it's because there was no other options at spirit Halloween.
Guest/Ad Reader
Yeah, there were.
Liz
No. It was spirit Halloween. There was a stoplight and there was a Cone.
Kelly
That said, we're grasping at straws to make it auto related. We did the best we could. Yeah, we did the best we could.
Liz
It's all for the Lord.
Kelly
So you're not pregnant, though?
Liz
No. And also, I just have to say, guys, come on. You think that's how I would announce my pregnancy is with a cone costume that says bump ahead? You should know what I mean.
Kelly
If I ever had to announce another pregnancy, which I won't because we're not having any more kids, I would. Here's what here, because I've thought about this, because I'm crazy. I'm crazy like that I would go to Culver's and I would ask for a number five sticker and I would stick it on my window and just take a picture of it.
Liz
Yeah, that's cute. That's so you.
Kelly
Because Culver's is my biggest, and I really. I don't eat Culver's now, literally, ever. And with my last two pregnancies, I think I discovered it with Fred, and then it just. It carried me through Fred in a major way.
Liz
Yeah.
Kelly
Like, it was a daily occurrence. Like, I knew when all the Culver's opened because, like, some were 1030, some were 1045, some didn't open till 11. And like, crazy. It's like, I had to have my Culver's.
Liz
You were so addicted.
Kelly
And.
Liz
And then when you actually had Fred, the craziest thing is after you had Fred, you were like, liz, will you go run and pick me up Culver's? And that was the first meal you had after you gave birth, which is like, some people have a deli sandwich, some people have sushi things they haven't been able to eat. You ate the one thing you've been exclusively.
Kelly
And then like, that's what did it for me. And then I didn't have it for months.
Liz
Yeah.
Kelly
Like, I had it one more time and then it was over.
Liz
Yeah. No, I'm. No, I'm not pregnant. But like, when I do drive past places like Culver's or other restaurants that we would both hit together when we were pregnant, which was like such a sweet, fun moment, I do kind of get that, that, that itch, know that real. It's like I wish I was special. And it's like flashbacks to giving birth. I am kind of getting those, but I don't know if it's because I want to be pregnant or if I just have like heart shaped glasses or rose colored glasses on from, like being pregnant together. And like, that or is it just.
Kelly
So, like, you can eat Culver's without feeling any sort of guilt?
Guest/Ad Reader
Totally.
Kelly
As often as you want?
Liz
Totally.
Guest/Ad Reader
Hard to say.
Liz
Could be. I don't know.
Kelly
So anyway, let's go back a bit, though, because we kind of had like a. I mean, it was hollow weekend.
Liz
I have notes.
Kelly
I have notes.
Liz
I have Halloween notes.
Kelly
I have Halloween notes, too. Did you write yours down?
Liz
No, I didn't, but they're. They're fresh in my mind.
Kelly
Okay, well, make sure you write it down because you're not gonna remember.
Liz
Well, I can. I can revisit this podcast, I guess, but, yeah, I should write it down. So Kelly and I and our families went to Craig and Charlotte's house for Halloween. Charlotte made Mom's chili.
Kelly
Was great.
Liz
Her first time. She crushed it. And they had like a little bonfire.
Guest/Ad Reader
And it was cute.
Liz
And Kelly and I and Maddie took. And Grayson took the kids trick or treating. Well, I'll let you go first.
Kelly
Well, so we talked about this in the last, last, last. We talked about this on the last podcast. We were excited about their house, about their subdivision. And their subdivision was pretty good.
Liz
Yeah.
Kelly
The problem is we. You'd walk by five houses, lights off.
Liz
Yeah.
Kelly
And it was like, okay. Like, there was more houses closed than open for trick or treaters. And, you know, I get it, it was a Friday night. You know, people are out and about. But the problem was it's like, turn your light on and leave a bowl of candy outside.
Liz
Yeah.
Kelly
And it's like, this is for the children. This is for the children. And if you're not into Halloween, I get that. But like, you have a full beat on your house. Like, you have the giant, you have the six, you have the ten foot skeleton outside your house, and you can't put up in your clothes on Halloween. Like, so what was it all for?
Liz
That's what made me mad, because Charlotte was like, it's gonna be really good. I've been walking, I've been scoping the neighborhood. This street has a lot of decorations out. So you think you have decorate. You've decorated for Halloween, you're going to be celebrating Halloween by handing out candy and. Or leaving a bowl of candy for the children, because otherwise, what else are you doing? And that, that made me mad. Do not decorate for Halloween. And then. Not if you're busy.
Guest/Ad Reader
Sure.
Liz
Leave a bowl of candy out.
Kelly
Leave a bowl of candy out.
Liz
What? My notes. One of my notes was, I'm never going to leave my neighborhood again. Now you don't have a neighborhood so you will always be traveling somewhere for trick or treating. I have a neighborhood, and my neighborhood doesn't have a lot of kids. Like, it's one of those neighbors, the hoods that's turning over. So it's got a lot of elderly people and now new young families are moving in and there's more and more every year, but there's still not a ton. And so my friends, who I said moved a few houses down was so excited for their first Halloween in the neighborhood. Her husband bought all full size candy bars. He had a cooler with nooners and beer for the parents. Like, he was so excited and it was so sweet. However, there weren't that many trick or treaters. So on our way back, we stopped by so James could like trick or treat. But what I learned is I'm not going to take the children, the children out of my neighborhood. Like, my neighbors deserve the trick or treaters. So for me to take a darling T. Rex out of the trick or treating game was. Was wrong of me.
Kelly
Well, and it's. We can't complain that people weren't open when people are taking trick or treaters away. Because I would say on the flip side, there's a lot of people because on some of the Facebook groups, they pop off so sad. Only got three trick or treaters. It's just not what it used to be. And it's like, okay, well, I don't know what to tell you. So it's kind of both like we're mad that now more houses are open and they're mad that they bought all these candy bars and no one came.
Liz
Yeah.
Kelly
So I do think it's a bloom where you're planted kind of thing. And I think if you're planted there, you need to bloom.
Liz
Bloom. That's very much what I'm thinking because my, my neighbor, she said that her cousin who lives in like a neighborhood kind of across from us, she's like, she was cleared out of candy at 7:45 in like that neighborhood. Anyone could tell you that's going to be a good trick or treating neighborhood. So I don't want us to. Unless you're. Unless you do whatever you want to do. But for me, you have to travel somewhere. Kelly, I don't have to travel. I have to bloom where I'm planted. My kids are going to get what they get and they won't throw a fit. I don't need. I don't need them to hit the best neighborhood because I don't need them to have all that candy. We keep complaining. We also keep complaining about how much candy they get. So maybe it's kind of better that they just, like, thrive in their own neighborhood. And when you're done, you're done.
Kelly
Yeah, no, I think it's. I think it's a really tangible takeaway, and I think you can apply this to a lot of things in your life.
Guest/Ad Reader
Yeah.
Kelly
You know, it's not always. The grass isn't always greener, so it's not always about, like, looking for, like, the next best, like, friend group or like, the house or, like, the church or the school. Like, sometimes it's just, how can you make what you have better?
Liz
Yeah. How can you be part of the.
Kelly
Dad would always say, be part of the solution, not the problem.
Guest/Ad Reader
Be part of the solution, not the problem.
Kelly
Well, actually.
Liz
Good one.
Kelly
Well, actually, he would say it the other way, but I'm flipping it. He would always tell me, don't be.
Guest/Ad Reader
Part of the problem.
Liz
Oh, yeah, you're making it more positive.
Kelly
I'm trying to make it more positive, but now I tell my kids that all the time. Are you being a problem or a solution?
Liz
Are you in a problem or solution? Another good line that you just picked up was from when we went to Iowa. Oh, yeah, we.
Kelly
This is a good line.
Liz
The woman who interviewed us, she has, like, three sons. And she always tells her sons when they're fighting, a brother is a brother's best friend.
Kelly
So cute. So I've a good one. I've been saying that to my boys.
Liz
That's a cute one.
Kelly
A sibling is a sibling's best friend.
Guest/Ad Reader
It's not.
Liz
It's not quite as cute. No, but a sister is a sister's best friend.
Kelly
And maybe you just say it both ways. Yeah, but then what does that mean for, like, George and Hattie and Fred and Libby and their relationships?
Liz
Just figure it out. I don't know. Not everything has to be that deep. They're just be. Be part of the solution. Don't be part of the problem. I can't wait to see what our kids say. Oh, we said, because dad has so many one liners.
Kelly
Dad has so many one liners. For his 50th birthday, we all printed.
Guest/Ad Reader
Out.
Kelly
Frames that had his, like, sayings on them. Cause her dad just, like, repeats the same stuff over and over and over and over again. That's how our grandma was too. And if it sounds like that's how I'm gonna be.
Liz
Also one of the. But he cracks me up. Why has he not been on the podcast yet? One of the funniest things. And I might have just been delirious for being so hungry, but one of the funniest things he's ever said to me. We were. Was when we went. We took like a big family trip in Italy and we took a cooking class and we came hungry and then we cooked and then we sat down and then we waited and waited and waited for. I don't even know what we were waiting for, but we were starving. And they finally come down, they're like, it's coming soon. Like, the food will be out. The food is coming soon. And dad goes, yeah, so it's Christmas. Maybe it's just like. I don't know why. It's probably not even that funny.
Kelly
No, it's not that funny. It's not that funny. But, yeah, he says it all the time. It's coming. Oh, well, so is Christmas, Kelly.
Liz
So it's Christmas. He.
Kelly
He's.
Liz
Has he, has he been saying, beats a stick in the eye to you lately? Yeah, be like, dad, do you want to. Hey, I'm making some bread. Like some sourdough bread.
Guest/Ad Reader
I'll bring you some.
Liz
He goes, well, beats a stick in the eye. It's like, like, I hope so.
Kelly
Yeah, like moldy bread beats a stick in the eye.
Liz
What are you talking of? A lot of things that beat a stick in the eye. Oh, gosh.
Kelly
Funny, funny.
Liz
Sorry.
Kelly
Well, anyway, so Halloween was fun. I don't. So anyway, I'm a free agent, so I might hit both neighborhoods because I got four. And we might divide and conquer. Yeah, maybe I'll divide and conquer.
Liz
Totally.

We tried doing the wet dog food approach and that always seemed to make Tex sick. Tex loves he gobbles up Sundays and it's still giving us that fresh dog food that we're after. But we can store it just like kibble. Unlike other fresh dog food, Sundays does not require thawing, refrigeration, or preparation because of their air drying process. You just pour and serve. That's it. It couldn't be easier. Sundays was started by Dr. Tori Waxman, a vet veterinarian who has devoted her life to animals. It has the absolute highest standards for quality and food safety. If it's not 100% all natural meat and superfoods with 0% synthetic nutrients or artificial ingredients, then it's not Sundays. Make the switch to Sundays. Out of the ordinary, but someone else had a big weekend this weekend.
Kelly
Huge weekend. And that was Tyler and George. Hard to say who had a better weekend. Yeah, so it was youth season here in Missouri. Youth deer season. And if you don't want to hear this, like Skip ahead in a couple seconds. But it's. I'll keep it pg. And deer hunting is, like, a big part of Missouri. If you wanted to know what it was like here, we have a lot of people, especially, like, in the areas that I live, deer hunt. Tyler grew up deer hunting, and we eat a lot of venison. I'm not the biggest venison person. I like certain cuts of the deer prepared certain ways. But I really like deer sausage. It's, like, really good. And our butcher's amazing, and I love his recipes, and they're just, like, great to keep in the. We keep them in our freezer, and then literally, Tyler cuts one open every week. And then if we ever need, like, it's basically like, homemade chopsticks is what it is. Like, so we eat, we go through it, and the kids love it because it's all Tyler.
Guest/Ad Reader
Tyler's.
Kelly
So sometimes you need to take a page out of a dad's book, because, like, if Tyler takes the kids to the farm, I'll, like, want to, like, pack lunches for them. And he's like, no, I'm just. We're gonna bring deer sausage. Like, that's all he'll bring.
Liz
Yeah.
Kelly
And I'm over here, like, wanting to, like, cut up peanut butter and jelly in a circle and, like, send him with apple slices. And he's like, nope. We just bring deer sausage to the farm.
Liz
And they'll get desperate enough and eat.
Kelly
It, and they'll get desperate enough and eat it, and they do, and now they like it. So he obviously did something right. So good for. Anyway, so it was George's first year hunting. He's six. I thought it was a little young. I wasn't, like, thrilled about the idea of him going. I didn't think he'd be able to sit there for long enough. I didn't know if he'd be able to make the shot. And, like, that's, like, the last thing you want to do is, like, not make the shot or, like, you know, whatever. So I was. I was a little nervous, but George and Tyler had been target practicing a lot. And George actually is a very good shot.
Guest/Ad Reader
And it is.
Kelly
I'm not saying it's easy, but, like, the way that Tyler does it is, like, he has the gun on, like, a stand. So, like, it's not like George is, like, lifting it up himself. Like, he has to line the scope up. He has to keep it steady, and that's what he has to do. So anyway, George, they hunted in the morning, and they passed up like 2 bucks, 14 does. And George could have killed. I mean, he could have gotten anything, but he really wanted to try to find a big buck. And so Tyler was like, I was really proud of him because he, like, didn't want to do anything in the morning. So they didn't get anything in the morning. They went back out around, like three o' clock, and. And then this deer came out and Tyler was like. George was so calm and collected. Tyler's like. I was like, shaking. Like, the whole stand was shaking. Tyler was like, so, like, oh, my God, this is so crazy.
Liz
This is so crazy. If you, like, there's no rush. I've gone hunting like, once or twice, but, like, the rush is like nothing I've ever felt before.
Kelly
Yeah, it's really fun. It's fine. So anyway, then George got his first deer. And it's a huge.
Liz
It's huge.
Kelly
Like, Tyler's been hunting his whole life, and Tyler says he has one deer that's bigger than it.
Liz
It's so, so exciting. It's just what they both needed. Like, just all of Tyler's dreams coming true. To be able to, like, have taken his son out and see him, like, just do such a good job and make the shot, it's just.
Guest/Ad Reader
It's amazing.
Kelly
And George was so. And I was just like, really? I'm really proud of Tyler because I feel like he's just really instilled, like. And George has, like, such a love for animals. So I got some questions being, like, how does he deal with that, like, with him being such an animal lover. And I think Tyler's just done a really good job of, like, instilling, like, you can love animals and understand that we have to eat animals also. And, you know, we've done this because, you know, when we raised our pigs and then when we've raised cows before or even like some of our drink guns, like, we've just seen kind of the cycle of what it takes to raise an animal and then have that animal then feed your family. And like, just like the beauty that's in that, and Tyler's just done a really excellent job instilling that in our kids. And it is the same thing with deer. Because the way, I mean, dad at our farm and Tyler at his parents farm, they put in a lot of work to make sure these animals are fed throughout the year.
Liz
Like, they.
Kelly
They plant corn, they plant clover, they plant milo, like, all these crops that the deer need to survive. So then when you take one or two or three a season, you're really sustaining. Like, it just, it bothers me, people who. And I didn't get any hate. I didn't want to say that people have a good understanding, but the people who don't. Like, I get that it's not for everyone, but to not understand. Especially like if you're, if you're not like a vegan, no offense, like, to not understand that people who hunt are actually doing more for the, for the life and the quality of life for the animals and people who live in a high rise apartment. You know what I mean? Like, it's just, it's so, it's just, it's just interesting. But I'm very proud of him and George was very excited that we are turning it into sausage.
Liz
I love it. I'm so proud of him. That's awesome. That's so exciting.
Kelly
So that was like, peak and like, if you are like a hunting wife, like an opening day buck is like the best thing we could ask for.
Liz
Yeah.
Kelly
And Tyler was like, it's so. It's not regular season yet. So, like, Tyler isn't going yet. And Tyler's like, I don't even know if I need to go this year. Like, I feel like we just like, did it. And I'm like, perfect.
Liz
Wow. See, Maddie's picking up hunting. He. Which he should, you know, he went, so this is going to be his first season and I think actually Tyler might take him out. So Tyler seems to be pretty lucky. Lucky luck charm. But yeah, Maddie, Maddie's getting into it.
Guest/Ad Reader
He loves it.
Liz
He says it's so refreshing to like walk through the woods and not be afraid that you're about to be shot, per his military experience. So.
Kelly
Okay.
Liz
Yeah.
Guest/Ad Reader
Okay.
Kelly
Yeah.
Liz
So he's, he's, he's excited about it.
Kelly
That's awesome.
Liz
But that doesn't mean I'm about to be a hunting wife now too.
Kelly
Well, it's fun. You'll. You'll be part of something. I'm sure me and my. All my mom friends will get together. You can come.
Liz
Oh, I know you girls.
Kelly
Anyways, speaking of getting together, we got an advice question in that I wanted to answer, if that would be okay with you.
Liz
Okay.
Kelly
Let me pull it up. I text it to you. Okay. Hey, Kelly and Liz, you've inspired me to stretch myself and try hosting other families. I've got two little boys, five and three, and know they would benefit from playtime with other kiddos. I'm wondering if you have any tips, thoughts on winter hosting. Where does everyone hang out? Kitchen, family room, since some of the kids are still little, it's hard to send them fully off on their own. Do you plan things for the kids to do? Do you expect the parents to hang in the playroom? Our kids are always asking us to play games. Usually end up fighting if we're not around. So to host others and keep the kiddos in check makes me hesitant. Thanks for all you do. I love the podcast. Look forward to it and all of your ideas slash hot takes every week. Amanda. Jen.
Liz
Jen.
Kelly
Doesn't matter. I liked this question because, first of all, when I see you guys posting the Carvel Facebook page that you're hosting, like, my heart explodes. My heart freaking explodes. So thank you for doing that. I have a lot I want to say about hosting because we hosted this weekend and it was a lot of kids. Let me count them out for you. 13 kids. 13 young kids. Like, the oldest was probably eight. And I feel like I don't plan activities because I think the activity is that we have a friend over. And I find that there is just so much good creativity from other kids seeing my kids toys and, like, my kids looking at their toys in a new way. I also love to send kids outside, even in the winter. It's like we put a coat on or we do a bonfire. We do like, some sort of outdoor activity. But I would say, like, my tangible takeaways for this is if you. Because I totally get, like, it's so not the vibe, like, you bring over, like, these young kids who need to be supervised. Like, let's say it's like Libby and Fred's age only. And then it's like, okay, how are you, like, talking to the parents? And like, you're all downstairs and like, maybe you want to be upstairs. Maybe you want to be in this room. So my first advice would be, like, if you want to, I think starting really small is a good tip. Like, just go for, like, one other family and just kind of let the kids, I guess, kind of lead it. Like, I wouldn't put too much pressure on it. I would say the point of you gathering is to get the kids together. Where I feel like sometimes. The point of sometimes when I host, like, the point is to watch the football game or to have dinner. And so then the kids are kind of, I guess, like, the sec.
Liz
Not the second thought, but they're coexisting in that.
Kelly
They're coexisting in that. But for really young kids, like, you're doing this for the play date.
Liz
Yeah.
Kelly
So I would set your expectations up. For that. Making it like you're like, you're doing a super easy dinner. Like a dinner that can be like eating on paper plates, like walking in the playroom maybe, but I wouldn't, I wouldn't put the pressure of like playing an extra activity. I also think though, if you wanted to like connect with the parents and have your friends over, maybe a couple of people. Don't underestimate the power of a 12 year old. Like you could so easily get like a mother's helper, like a 10, 11, 12 year old to come over and just hang out in the basement. They don't cost what a babysitter costs. Like, they're just happy to like, you know, make a little bit of extra money and then they can just do a good job of like supervising in a way to make sure nobody gets hurt. But like, you guys are right upstairs if needed. Yeah, I feel like that's a good, a good hack, a good tangible takeaway. Yeah, I agree.
Liz
I also just like, just keep in mind that we're all in the same stage of life. So whereas you're like, oh gosh, I'm having these people over and we're just like sitting on the floor of my playroom. Like that's what they're doing at their house too.
Kelly
That's what they're doing.
Liz
That.
Kelly
So it's better, better together so they get it.
Liz
So like, don't, don't be nervous about that. And also like if the vibes are vibing and like that you can like send the dads downstairs or send the moms downstairs. Like you can split up. So that way like, maybe you're, you want to like be doing stuff in the kitchen. Like then the moms can hang out in the kitchen and the dads can go supervise the kids downstairs. Like, you can split up too.
Kelly
Totally. You can split up. And you can also split up sometimes, like the invitation, like. Cause I. Especially if it's, you know, older kids or like it would be too many kids. I think there's nothing wrong with being like, hey, do you want to bring like James over? Tyler's gonna be with the other kids. But like, I would love to get the boys together. So then you're basically saying like, hey, you have your husband stay home too with your other kids. Like, let's just do like a one on one play date.
Liz
Sure, yeah.
Kelly
Option two.
Liz
Option two. A lot of options actually. Worlds are a waste.
Kelly
But I really hope everyone's challenging themselves to host a little this holiday season. So anyway, we hosting.
Liz
I'M going to host some sort of girls thing with the girls in my neighborhood. Just because, like, that sourdough thing can't stop talking about. I can't stop making it. Like, so inspired. I need to decide what I'm going to do. But the best takeaway. One of the most best takeaways you've ever given was, like, invite people over and say, this is what we're doing. Do you want to come?
Kelly
I know.
Liz
I'm making chili. Would you and your family like to join?
Kelly
So that's what we did last night. We said, hey, we're gonna turn on the football game. I have some leftover beef stew. People just, like, brought other things to go with beef stew, so it was like, no big deal.
Liz
I didn't even know you hosted last night.
Kelly
Yeah, no, I'm always hosting.
Liz
She's always hosting.
Kelly
And it does let me, like, I don't always want to do it, but I'm always happy after the fact. I just think it's good. It's just good for my kids. It's good for me. It's good for the Lord.
Liz
I was also proud of you that you put that deer garland.
Kelly
I know. I'm like, I'm such a thing up.
Liz
Which, like, we've been doing this podcast for a few years now. You can go back a couple of years when we were talking about fall decor, and Kelly was like, I don't like decorations. Like, no decor. I'm not doing it. And it's just so interesting to see where your different phases of your life lead you.
Kelly
Yeah, I'm a hypocrite.
Liz
No, you're not a hypocrite. You're evolving, and you're.
Guest/Ad Reader
You're.
Liz
You are expanding, and you're getting more headspace for more things. In that phase in your life, you couldn't fathom putting up a garland. Like, you were just being stretched in a lot of directions. And it's crazy to think that you were because you have, like, more kids than you do now, but you are just so much better equipped to handle it that you are willing to put up a garland. And that's life. So if you feel like you're drowning right now and you can't fathom a garland, just know one of these days, you might fathom one.
Kelly
Let's check in on our hobbies, our micro hobbies.
Liz
Oh, I'm so happy you said that. Okay, let's do it.
Kelly
So if you missed last episode, Elizabeth and I are a really big fan of micro hobbies. Have we done A like micro hobbies podcast.
Liz
Oh, for sure.
Kelly
Yeah, we for sure have. Okay, we need to do that again though because a micro hobby is basically just something you're doing. Like it's not a hobby. And like the traditional like oh I'm, I do pottery or like horseback riding or like pickleball. It's like just like little things. You're, you're currently working.
Liz
I'm making bread. Making sourdough.
Kelly
Yeah, mine was frying fish this past summer. I got so into frying fish. Anyway, so my micro hobby is I want to try to learn how to can jalapenos because I really like canned jalapenos, especially in my chili. Like fresh canned.
Liz
Yeah.
Kelly
And Elizabeth's was to learn how to give herself a blowout. So we promised to do weekly check ins to keep, to stay on track to be honest.
Liz
So I, I have not booked a blowout appointment yet. But I did blow out my hair and I do think I, I, I've done it twice and I, and I've definitely gotten better with the technique. My problem is I can't get the volume and like the next day after I sleep on it, it's just flat. It's so flat. Like I can't get that like volume that I'm after. So I need to try, I think teasing a more of like a volumizing spray. And someone also suggested curlers and I think curlers could be a nice move as well.
Kelly
Oh, I think curl, I think like two little hot rollers in your head could be, could take you a really long way. Elizabeth.
Liz
Yeah, yeah. I really do actually. So figuring out the vault. I think I've got the rolling technique in a much better spot. I just cannot figure out the volume.
Kelly
You can't figure out the volume.
Liz
That's my, that's what's on my agenda this week.
Kelly
Well, I have done very little. I mean I did ask my mother in law for the recipe. She then went out of town. So I'm giving her space and grace and I'm gonna maybe follow up with her. I did watch a reel on canning just accidentally came across my desk. Seems so hard.
Liz
Really.
Kelly
It's just, it's the boiling of the water and then you have to have these little jar things and you have to take it out and then you have to seal it and you have to like boil the jars ahead of time to sanitize them. Like I, it's gonna be, it's gonna stretch me in a major way.
Liz
You need like you and there's something that Just watching a video on YouTube, like, is not the same as, like, I want to sit down with a person and have a person walk me through it.
Kelly
Yeah, totally. But I think if I understood. My thing is I need to understand, like, the science behind canon a little bit more.
Liz
Yeah.
Kelly
Because I think once I understand, like, okay, you boil this, because I think you boil it in the jar because it helps seal better. No one freak out if you know what you're doing. Because I'm not going to be doing anything until I'm sure. But I don't have a major update yet. And I wish I had more, but.
Liz
But also, like, I think whenever you get to the point and maybe you try with something, like, not so much like the jalapenos. Like, maybe you try it with, like, peaches or something. Maybe you're just trying can it. And then like, if a month passes and you see that there's mold in there. Okay, you didn't do it right. Or two weeks pass. You know, you just kind of have to figure, like, see if you're even doing it right.
Kelly
Well, and this girl I was following, here's what I should actually do. I need to buy some mason jars. And she's like, all of her empty jars, she fills with water and cans them because she's like, it takes the same amount of space. And then, like, in case of emergency, I'd have, like, fresh water.
Liz
So she's just canned water, I guess, is fine. Because it's canned.
Kelly
Because it's sealed.
Liz
Because it's sealed.
Kelly
Like, you just couldn't, like, put water in a mason jar and, like, stick it in your cupboard for years.
Liz
Right. Because it's still water creates, like, bacteria.
Kelly
But she canned it. So maybe I like, can start with, like, can I just can water to get the canning process down before, like, I waste food.
Liz
No, no, I would, I would can. Because you're not gonna be able to tell if water. If it's gone bad. Like, you need to see if you're doing it right.
Kelly
I guess you're making a good point.
Liz
Is what I'm so, like, do something easy, like green. I don't know, just use anything. Green beans, whatever. So that's the update.
Kelly
That's the update. Let us know how your micro hobbies are going.
Liz
Yeah. And you want to learn how to make bread. You asked me for my bread recipes.
Kelly
I know, but I'm just. And I. I'm getting close. I just don't have all my ducks in a row yet.
Liz
Okay.
Kelly
I need to get a couple more Things in a row. Oh, you know what else I need to do this week?
Liz
What?
Kelly
I need to pull out my thankful turkey from last year.
Liz
Not the thankful turkey.
Kelly
Do you remember that?
Liz
I remember the thankful turkey.
Kelly
And it was a big lesson that I've learned in life that I'm really thankful for the thankful turkey. Because last year, it's basically this turkey that you hang on your wall, and then every day your kids tell you something they're thankful for, and that becomes the feathers of the turkey. And I was so postpartum with Libby, and I was like, I am not in a space to make a thankful turkey. I was like, this is just not gonna happen. Like, any free second I had to make a thankful turkey any free second I have. The last thing I need to be doing is things with construction paper. But I was like, but I just need to make it because, like, I can always clean the kitchen. And if I just take this time to, like, not clean the kitchen right now, but to make my thankful turkey, tomorrow, maybe even later that day, I will have a clean kitchen and a thankful turkey. Like, I will be able to get both eventually.
Liz
It's so crazy to think I remember. This is a whole podcast topic, was how you couldn't make this dang thankful turkey. And it just. It's sending me back to the postpartum days of, like, really darkness. Of just, like, what did I do? Why do I have two kids? This is so crazy. And it's just amazing how it gets so much better and then you have time to clean the kitchen and make a thankful turkey.
Kelly
Yeah. So.
Guest/Ad Reader
So you're pulling.
Liz
So. But so did you laminate it? The one that you made last year?
Kelly
I don't remember, honestly. Probably not. It doesn't sound like something.
Liz
Okay. I think we have a laminator if you need. If you need to bring it over, we can.
Kelly
Or. Maddie, I did decide to keep it because I was like, then I won't have to make it every year, so I need to go find it. But I'm also not going to. I mean, it's November. November 3rd. At the time of this recording, like, respectfully, sounds like I think I got about two weeks of thankful turkey ness in me, so I think I might do it the following week.
Liz
Yeah, okay.
Kelly
Maybe I do it now. I don't know.
Liz
Well, go see if you got it.
Kelly
Okay.
Liz
It doesn't hurt to sit on. To sit on the wall or in a box.
Kelly
Sure. Wait. Are you ready for industry news where I spill the hot tea going on in the auto industry.
Liz
Always ready, Cal.
Kelly
And it's tea. Sorry my eyelashes are so clumpy. Do you see this?
Liz
Yeah. I don't know what's going on.
Kelly
I used a bad mascara today.
Liz
A.
Kelly
Clumpy one, I guess. Okay, this is like what everyone's talking about and we've talked about this before, but now I guess there's just more movement on the topic. But GM will be dropping Apple CarPlay and Android Auto from all of its vehicles.
Liz
Yeah.
Kelly
Huh.
Liz
That's bad.
Kelly
So why. So they're starting with their EVs and then it's going to eventually expand to all of their ICE cars. The company plans to transition to its own voice automated integrated infotainment system which includes features like navigation and car services. But this change will be phased out over time. So the reasons that they're saying for change? Well, the reasons for change. Seamless integration. GM states that customers complained about the clunky experience of switching between phone based and the vehicle's native interface. So it aims for a more seamless integrated experience with its own software. First of all, show me the study. Show me, show me, show me. Who's complaining now? Do I like wireless Apple CarPlay? No. I like to, I like to plug in. It's not clunky though. It's your phone. It's not clunky.
Liz
Fix the, fix the wireless Apple CarPlay. Like Fix that. When Apple CarPlay is working the way it should, no one's complaining.
Guest/Ad Reader
Okay.
Kelly
They also say that the automaker wants to move to its own software that's not dependent on a smartphone. This allows GM to create more tightly coupled system for driver's assistance features and other graded other integrated services.
Liz
So how am I, how am I playing my Spotify?
Kelly
I don't, I don't know. But this I kind of understand. I, I really love Apple CarPlay. But I get what they're saying about how like for like a, for like an like a AI esque sort of semi autonomous driving futuristic experience. I understand how like if it's all like their system, they could probably do more cool things with it, but I'm not happy about it because then it goes to monetization. By replacing the phone mirroring technology with its own system, GM can create new revenue streams through subscription for services like streaming music and other concierge features. And then we have data collection. Having its own system allows GM to collect more data on user behavior within the car, which can provide insights for future product development and service offerings.
Liz
If it is good and it is easy to use and it's easy to connect your phone and like, my fears it's gonna be like, oh, you want your Spotify, download the app, figure out what the heck your login is.
Guest/Ad Reader
Oh, that was wrong.
Liz
Wrong and forgot password. Like, if it's easy, I'm fine with it. My fear is that it's gonna be clunkier. But if they're trying to fix a clunky aspect, then you would think they're gonna do everything in their power to make it not clunky at all.
Kelly
So. Well, I just.
Liz
To like get rid of it entirely is just like kind of.
Kelly
I just find this sounds expensive is what it sounds.
Liz
To like figure.
Kelly
Well, it's just like because now basically all the tech that they're getting from free from Apple and Android, now they're like saying they're going to do themselves. And I'm just saying, it's just. I just see things like this and I just think dollar signs, dollar signs, dollar signs.
Liz
Oh, so it'll make the.
Kelly
Make the price of the car more expensive.
Liz
I gotcha. Yeah. I don't know. We'll see. See, as someone who switches out of cars a lot, like, it sounds like a major nightmare to me. I'm. We are such exceptions in that. So I do think that, like, you buy a car, you keep it for a long time. Like you're brand loyal, you're used to their products. Like, maybe you won't notice it. I just really like Apple CarPlay.
Kelly
I like Apple and I like.
Liz
And it's. I think it's safer.
Guest/Ad Reader
I agree.
Liz
So when I'm switching out of my car and then I get into Maddie's big truck, which is already like slight different from what I'm used to. Last thing I want to do is be fumbling around trying to get my directions or change, you know, my song or whatever. Whatever. It's nice to have that consistency on the screen. So it's so.
Kelly
Yeah. I don't know, babe. Yeah, we'll have to see. I'm anxious to see if other manufacturers take this on. I don't wanna. As of right now, I don't like it. I hope it's amazing they're not a bunch of idiots.
Liz
Well, I know. That's what I'm. That's what I'm saying. Like, if they are. If people are allegedly claiming that it's clunky and they are going to do something to make it make something not clunky, then I'm expecting it to be amazing.
Kelly
So we'll see. And that's industry news. That was.
Liz
That was juicy. Okay, well, now it is time for Ditch the drive thru, where we give you an easy dinner recipe to mix it up to get you dinner. Dinner ruts.
Kelly
And today's just the drive through is something we had last night, which was lasagna soup. Lasagna soup. Now, my friend made it, and it was honestly excellent. And I was like, I can't believe you just threw this together. And she goes, well, I have ground sausage and beef in my freezer ready to go at all times, fully cooked.
Liz
Living a life that you've always wanted.
Kelly
It's really hard to see other people living out your dreams. And my excuse is negative because she also has four kids. So I better get after it. I better get after it.
Liz
Does she have. But does she have a thankful turkey, do you think?
Kelly
Yeah. You know what I mean? Well, then she's.
Liz
Yeah, she's one of those.
Kelly
She's the kind of. So I was thinking, like, I. So I loved that idea because also, it's like the soup was delicious as it was. Like, it was so yummy, so filling.
Liz
Walk me through a lasagna soup.
Kelly
There was, like, some broth, some noodles, tomatoes, but cut up, like, kind of small, which was kind of fun. And then just, like, some ground beef and ground sausage. And then she put some cheese in the crock pot, and then she served it with ricotta. If you wanted to, like, add extra cheese to your soup, which of course I did. I had a little crushed red pep on top just for some more. Razzle dazzle, zingy zangy. And it was delicious. And I'm really gonna try not to sound like windbag, but, like, I have my Blackstone. It's gonna kind of be like good fall weather. I'm like, what? I have so much ground beef in my freezer. I'm like, what if I could just brown this? Like, just do five pounds of it. Ready to go. I know. I'm a win back.
Liz
I'm a win back. Be a part of the solution, not.
Kelly
A part of the problem. Be.
Liz
All right, so I. I don't want to hear you bring up browning a bunch of ground beef one more time until you have done it.
Kelly
Done, done, done.
Liz
Kelly, I need you. Since I can't look on my phone right now, I need you to look up right now that recipe that Charlotte's mom made. Oh, I don't need to look it up.
Kelly
Yeah. I'm obsessed with this, so.
Liz
Oh, my gosh.
Kelly
So at the Halloween party, Charlotte's mom, who is a girl who always brings a good dip. Like, I've only been in. I've only seen Charlotte's mom in this capacity twice, and I've been impressed both times. The first was at their Cinco de Mayo party when she brought a homemade mango salsa, which was like, really a lot of razzle dazzle. And then she strolls into this party with a little pie dish with the best dip I've ever had. Here's what it was. So easy. Here's what it was. Pores and cheese, so, like, spread on the bottom. Fig jam, Delicious pistachio fake jam.
Liz
And I was like, girl, I'm in.
Kelly
Yeah, Pistachios, hot honey drizzled on top, served with a cracker on the side. It's every. It was everything. It was everything.
Liz
Excellent.
Kelly
I'm gonna make it for my wine day.
Liz
Oh, you should. Yeah.
Guest/Ad Reader
We were.
Liz
We kept complimenting her and she was like, girls, it couldn't have been easier. Like, stop complimenting me. Like, I like she. She said it was so easy and it was such a big payoff and it was such a wow moment.
Kelly
Such a wow moment.
Liz
Really good. And also, don't forget that this month is November.
Kelly
So get to browning, Kelly.
Liz
Get to browning. November, we are going to be doing one ground beef recipe a week. And if you want to get the emails with the recipe, you can go to the carmomofficial.com and sign up for our newsletter.
Kelly
We're going to be pushing our ground beef recipes, which I'm very excited about. And let me know. I want to have someone on the podcast in November or December. I want to have someone who is like a grocery budget meal expert.
Liz
Yeah.
Kelly
So let me know.
Liz
Reminds me, this is a good ditch the drive through because I saw a girl like that on my Instagram. These are now my favorite Instagram videos to watch. She made Barb. She made pulled pork in the crock pot and then she reused it for four meals in different ways.
Kelly
I saw this girl today.
Guest/Ad Reader
Oh, okay.
Liz
Yeah, so she made. She made her, you know, shredded pork in the crock pot. We all know how to do it. First day she did like tostadas. Next day she did. What did she do? Oh, she did like on a bun with some Mac and cheese and like coleslaw, like barbecue pulled pork sliders. Then she did, I think another thing in like a Mexican variety. I can't remember what exactly what it was. But then the last day she did barbecue pork pizza flatbreads, which is like such a good way to reuse like that's a great last day because you're like, oh, my gosh. Like, I can't really stand eating that much pork.
Kelly
I was thinking also, okay, make it and then put in the freezer and then have it next week, or make.
Liz
It and put it in the freezer and have it next week.
Kelly
You know, there's options are limitless. So anyway, send me your best. But, like, I want someone who's like, teach people how to cut their grocery bills in half. Like, I just think that's very. That just would be someone I'm interested in bringing on. Like, how can we cut our grocery bills?
Liz
Yeah.
Kelly
Make. Make good, smart swaps.
Liz
Yeah, totally. And with that, that's going to be our episode. So thank you guys so much for listening. We recorded this on Monday, so we haven't watched Dancing with the Stars yet.
Kelly
So Friday, on the edge of our seats.
Liz
We're on the edge of our seat.
Kelly
Friday, we will be in our predictions. Oh, wait, because it already happened, though. No, because this is awkward. Because it's coming out Wednesday.
Liz
Yeah. And if one of where there's, like, dead wrong.
Kelly
I think, though, that Danielle's gonna go home.
Liz
There's, like, a lot of hollow blue on the Internet about, like, people really wanting Whitney gone, which is just not fair.
Kelly
Well, I know there is, and I don't think she deserves to go home. I don't think she's gonna win.
Liz
No, I don't think she's gonna win.
Kelly
But there's, like, when you have to have the fan vote, there is a.
Liz
Group of people on the Internet that says they're gonna keep voting for Andy until Whitney gets voted off, and then they will stop voting. I don't know where the Whitney hate is coming from. I mean, she was really bad in her first season, but, like, can't we get over it? Can't we all agree there was, like, a reality show and, like, you wouldn't be watching it unless there was a villain. Like, at the end of the day, she's still a mom, guys.
Kelly
Still just a girl.
Liz
Well, she's an amazing dancer. Well, that's like.
Kelly
Can we not separate the art from the artist for a second? I mean, this is a dancing competition.
Liz
It's a dancing competition.
Kelly
We're so obsessed. I literally can't. I. We're obsessed. I love Dancing with the Stars.
Liz
Oh, my gosh. Kelly, did you. I saw this reel that there are rumors. So you know the troupe? You know the girls in the troupe? No, like, the. Those four people that dance that aren't pros. They're like the younger people. What's the girl's name?
Kelly
I have no idea.
Liz
No, I'm trying to tell you a story. She is. So there's two girls. There's two girls in the troop. She is Jenna, Jenna's niece. I can't remember what her name is, but now she's like, popping up all of my stuff. Anyway, there's rumors that her and Robert could be dating. And here's. Here's the receipts. Here's the receipts. Whitney called off the search for the American girl, and Robert's only following one of the people, one of the troop members, and it's her.
Kelly
Is it Chantelle?
Liz
No. What's the other girl's name?
Kelly
Oh, hold on. I'm a 90 day fiance. Is Rob.
Liz
No.
Guest/Ad Reader
Look up the troop.
Liz
The troop name.
Kelly
I am trying. I'm trying. Haley.
Liz
Haley.
Kelly
Robert Irwin is rumored to be dating troop dancer Haley Bills.
Liz
Haley Bells. That's her name.
Kelly
Multiple sources and fan speculation point to a budding romance between Robert Irwin and fellow Dancing with the Stars troop Haley Bills. They were reportedly seen getting cozy behind the scenes at. A recent video of the two has sent fans into a frenzy about their amazing chemistry.
Liz
Yeah, she's 19, he's 21.
Kelly
How do I see this chemistry video?
Liz
I haven't seen the chemistry video, but I just. I saw this girl who was just, like, debriefing all about it.
Kelly
Oh, my gosh. I'm, like, obsessed with this.
Liz
I know.
Kelly
I want a reality show of the dancing. I want a reality show of Dancing with the Stars.
Liz
Like, make it happen. Dancing with the Stars. You got cameras everywhere. Why aren't you doing that? They're. They always seem like they're trying to figure out a ways to monetize in another way.
Kelly
Totally. That would be such a good show.
Liz
It would be such a good show.
Kelly
I'm so, like, all, like the, you know. Oh, are they mad they got paired with that star?
Guest/Ad Reader
Like.
Kelly
Like, what does it look like?
Liz
Mm. Yeah.
Kelly
What does it look like?
Liz
Well, all that and more on Friday's episode. So thank you so much for listening to the carpool podcast, and we'll talk to you next time.
