Welcome to the carpool podcast with Kelly.
Liz
I don't like. I'm sure George will like it, but like to. I don't really get like gifts at a birthday party from friends.
Kelly
And Liz, his frat boy looking 22 year old son who is singing in cursive and just acts like it just seems like he's too cool to be here. And I'm like, I never want my son to grow up. Your mom. Time off starts now.
Liz
Welcome back to the carpool podcast with Kelly and Liz. Hey Liz.
Kelly
Hey Cal. Happy post Mother's Day. Hope everyone had a great day.
Liz
Mother's Day, it's similar in New Year's Eve to me where it's just like Expectation Station. Oh.
Kelly
And it Kelly. Totally. Everyone's like, yeah, Mother's Day. Was it, was it fun? Was it relaxing? No, no. Mothers don't get to. I don't get to relax and maybe it's my kids ages, but like I want to hang out with my family, but there's just, there's no world where like I'm just hanging out with my family and relaxing.
Liz
It's like I want to be with my family, but I don't. I'm telling you, I want to be a dad. I don't want to be the default parent, but for the most part, I had a good Mother's Day. I do think my kids are getting. George and Hattie at least like were into it, you know, because one thing about Tyler, love him to death, like this is just never going to be his strong suit. Like I told him for Mother's Day, I want crocs. I'm not talking like the cute crocs sandals. I was like, I want the clogs because I need barn shoes. I need to be able to slip on something. Whether I have socks on, whether I have like bare feet to like walk up to the barn in and hunk crocs. So he did deliver and get me crocs. He gave me. He wrapped the box with huge. He bought me two pairs. He wants me to pick a color and I'm like the way that now I just have to go make a return of the other croc. Was like so unbelievably unnecessary.
Kelly
It sounds like he has to make the return.
Liz
Sounds like he has to make the return.
Kelly
Or you have two pairs of crocs.
Liz
Yeah, I don't know. I kind of want to like go return them and get something else maybe.
Kelly
I thought you wanted the crocs.
Liz
No, no, the second pair of crocs.
Kelly
Oh, Overturn the second pairing.
Liz
He got me purple and white, obviously. Which ones am I keeping?
Kelly
He got you purple or white? Yeah, white, obviously.
Liz
I'm keeping the white.
Kelly
Yeah.
Liz
Like, that was so weird to even, like, get purple. Like, if they didn't have white, like, I would have. I'd get. Why you maybe would get two. But anyway, I'm going to return the purple because I just think I'm having such a renaissance with Crocs. They are. I'm just really proud of them, if I'm honest. Like, I love. They're having, like, the Abber Crombie effect, you know, where it's like, they were so out and now they're so back.
Kelly
I don't think they were ever so out.
Liz
I don't think that you're. I think you're so right. But I'm saying they're. They're a good example of a brand who is just like, continued to elevate themselves because, like, they have the croc. The Croc logs have been around for forever. Then they came out with the amazing idea to do those little jibbits or whatever they're called, Croc charms. And then that was fun. That was a collectible. That was a way to DIY it. Make your own personality. And now they're just. They have so many other cute, comfortable shoes. I have a pair of Croc flip flops I got. Found them on TikTok shop, of all places, and I'm obsessed with them.
Kelly
Crocs and Uggs have done a very good job of having this iconic shoe that then maybe went out, but always having something else.
Liz
The new alternative to the new alternative. Like, who's someone who didn't do that? Let's think for a second. Like, you know, this is kind of a hot take. Like, you. Well, one. And I know they're kind of coming back, but like Vera Bradley, like, they were everything and now in a way, they're back in a way. I still love my piece. Like, I still have a Vera Riley bag that I still like, but they. They're not iconic in the same way that Crocs and Uggs are. I kind of feel like such a hot take. And I love Kendra Scott. I wear Kendra Scott earrings every single day. But, like, they never really got the second thing after the thing.
Kelly
Yeah, I agree.
Liz
Kendra Scott had those. What. What was that shape?
Kelly
Like a. Oh, like a. Like a oval.
Liz
Kind of like an angley oval.
Kelly
Yeah. An angry oval. Yeah, you're so right.
Liz
The Anglia oval. They just never really, like, got the. And I think they're still doing good. Like, again, they make good jewelry, but, like.
Kelly
And that's how it's not as iconic.
Liz
And that's how I feel about Van Cleef. Like, people. I'm sorry? People who are spending money on Van Cleef necklaces. I think that's crazy because, like, it's a shape that you can buy off Amazon, and that's all that it is.
Kelly
Yeah, yeah.
Liz
People in Van Cleef necklaces are so expensive. Like, I bought that fake one off Amazon, and I like it. I love it. But I almost, like, can't wear it because I can't stomach people thinking I actually own a Van Cleef necklace.
Kelly
How much are they?
Liz
Like, $8,000?
Kelly
Oh, my.
Liz
No, it's not like, it's like, oh, it was like, you know, 1200 bucks. Like, big, big splurge. Like, that's crazy enough. No, it's like. It's like, what's wrong with you?
Kelly
Yeah, that's crazy.
Liz
That's crazy.
Kelly
You know, who else couldn't adapt? And it's kind of, like you said, kind of a weird time, because it's like, I'm thinking 2000s, and now they are kind of making a comeback. But Juicy Couture had such a chokehold on the population, and then when their sweatsuits went out and all their stuff went out, they didn't, like, come up with something new to, like, replace it. And now they're. Now they're kind of coming back, but I. In, like, an ironic way.
Liz
Yeah, they're coming.
Kelly
They're.
Liz
There's coming back in a nostalgic kind of way, and then there's coming back in a. And, like, they're still cool and fun. Toms. Where are Toms?
Kelly
Toms is a great example because Crocs.
Liz
And Uggs did it.
Kelly
Yeah.
Liz
Where are Tom. Who did not. I. Who did not have a pair of Toms.
Kelly
I loved toms.
Liz
What are Toms doing?
Kelly
So it looks like they still have their classic shoe, which.
Liz
It's like an espadrille, right? Is that what an espadrille is?
Kelly
No. Kind of. You're getting closer here. I'll look at their espadrilles.
Liz
What the heck is an espadrille?
Kelly
They've got. They've got cute shoes. They're like. They are selling an estabadril for $70.
Liz
Which I have never seen. Toms hit the influencer marketing. I think they need to.
Kelly
No, you're right. You're. You're totally right, because they have actually very Family casting call. Enter now. Someone could do it. They have cute shoes. They have cute Ben shoes. But, yeah, they're. They're. They're not coming across. I'm not seeing the links. No one schlepping those links.
Liz
No one.
Kelly
And the thing with crocs is, crocs are such a functional shoe that no one has really been able to recreate in the same way outside of, like, literal fake crocs. But no one's tried to, like, reinvent the one size fits all in the sense of men, women, children, comfort, easy to wash, convenience.
Liz
It's just. It's the summer shoe. It's take it to the splash pad, it's take it to the creek, it's take it to the barn, to the lake. Like, they. And they last. Like these croc flip flops that I got. I'm telling you, like now, I do. I think they'll be a little slippery when wet. I do.
Kelly
Huh?
Liz
I do think they'll be a little slippery when wet. To be expected. But I'm like, they're not going to show, like, my dirty feet. Like, that's the thing with Birkenstock. Sometimes that just kill me. Like, I know it doesn't bother you when you're like. Because when you have your foot. But like, if you go to someone's house and, like, take. And you take your shoe off and like, they see like the black Birkenstock, like, that's.
Kelly
That's a moment.
Liz
That's a. Like with the rubber croc, it's like.
Kelly
Never thought about that. Oh.
Liz
Like, if you see someone's like, stinky flip flops in their garage.
Kelly
Yeah. I've never thought about it.
Liz
And it's not a big deal because I know it's like, not dirty, but it's just. It's just. It's another. It's a layer. It's a layer to the.
Kelly
It's a layer.
Liz
Anyway, and then my friend, today, I had like, a mommy makeup class at mommy makeover spa day at preschool, which has turned in to quite the controversy in my DMs. She had croc wedges on. And I'm like, those are the cutest shoes ever. She's like, they're croc wedges.
Kelly
Croc wedges.
Liz
And they. I'm telling you, crocs is on it.
Kelly
Like these platform wedges.
Liz
Yeah, like the Brooklyn low wedge. That's what I think that's what she had on.
Kelly
Do you see that, Brooklyn? Yes, I see it. Okay. They're really cute.
Liz
They're Darling, it's just a low wedge. I'm buying these.
Kelly
Yeah, it's a 1.
Liz
It's a 1.9-inch heel. That's so good for me.
Kelly
Oh, gosh. Okay, well, now I want to get crocs.
Liz
Well, let's. Hold on. Let's be careful. We cannot get the same pair.
Kelly
Oh, no. You got white.
Liz
I'll fit. No. Oh, you're just gonna get the clog. I know. I'm moving on to wedges. I. Well, now I have the clogs. So you see why I'm like. This feels like a twofer. I'm gonna go back to the store and get another pair of crocs.
Kelly
Totally. I see what you mean.
Liz
It's a croc girl summer.
Kelly
It is a croc girl summer.
Liz
I can't wait. Anyway, speaking of things making a comeback, remember how we were having, like, the discussion about, like, you know, there's. There's all these new, like, there's new viral foods that are coming, right. We had the cucumbers. We had the cottage cheese. I kind of feel like ground beef is kind of like having its renaissance. And then there's been the whole, like, Dubai chocolate, and it's like pistachios are kind of like having a renaissance. I've started doing pistachio coffee.
Kelly
What?
Liz
I brought you one of those. It's pistachio honey latte.
Kelly
You didn't. Oh, oh, oh, oh, yeah.
Liz
You didn't like it.
Kelly
I didn't like it. I didn't like it.
Liz
I love it. I love it.
Kelly
I love it. For me. So it's a syrup that you get added to your lattes.
Liz
I'm just saying pistachios are having a moment. Like, I think pistachios are the new food, and I'm just trying to predict, like, what is the next food?
Kelly
And it's something that's impossible to predict because every time we try, we're. We're shocked. It's out of left field. I have no idea.
Liz
It's so out of left field. I know.
Kelly
I'm. I'm done. I'm done trying to. To think about it. But you know what does actually remind me of talking about things from way back when. Have you seen, you know that. That song by Rodney Atkins that says the watching you? Oh, yeah. Oh, have you seen how him and him son are recreating it?
Liz
Yeah.
Kelly
Okay. I have some thoughts on this, so.
Liz
Oh, me too.
Kelly
Context. Okay, let's just see. Let's just see where both of our thoughts land. So Rodney Atkins wrote A song called watching you. And it's about how his son like watches him and then acts like him.
Liz
And it's we like fixing things and holding mama's hand.
Kelly
Yeah, it's precious. So 22 year or no, like 20 years later, his son comes out and sings a verse to the song. Now his son's 22. Let me play it.
Liz
Is that legal?
Kelly
I don't know. I'll just play the part where his son sings. It feels like how long can you show?
Liz
I feel like I know what you're gonna.
Kelly
Here are my thoughts. Well, I want to hear your thoughts.
Liz
Well, I've seen comments. People say, why is he singing in cursive?
Kelly
No, he is singing in cursive and that's weird. And it saddens me to watch this video because they show the music video where his son was actually in it. And then they show his frat boy looking 22 year old son who is singing in cursive and just acts like. Just seems like he's too cool to be here. And I'm like, I never want my son to grow up. I'm scared for my kids to grow up.
Liz
That is such an interesting take I have. I thought it was darling and I was like, oh, he's such a. Look how cute he is now.
Kelly
No, it made me feel. I can just see all the phases that James is going to go through of like when he no longer wants to snuggle me and then I pick him up from school and I'm embarrassing and then he's trying to, you know, wear his hair a certain way because that's what all the kids are doing. And I don't get it and I'll never get it. And he doesn't talk to me and I just got all of those feelings in one moment from watching that video.
Liz
So that's so crazy. I don't have that. That's. I don't feel that way. And similarly, like I actually am having like almost the opposite reaction because at. We had field day recently at school and our school is amazing. Like in the eighth grader, it's like a preschool through eighth grade. So like the preschoolers know the eighth graders. It's like they like everyone just like, like it's is a very tight community. I love it. And there's an 8th grader named George and then there's my George and they're the only two Georges in the school. So it's every. It's big George and little George. And at field day I was there and like Big George was like, george. Little George. Like, give it. Like, it was so cute. And then George's mom came up to me, and she's like, so you're the new George mom? Because, like, her kids in 8th grade are leaving. I'm like, she's like, yeah. Like, that's my. That's my big George. I can't believe it was in eighth grade. And, like, this George is, like, so cute, so darling. Like, I'm like, oh, my gosh, it's darling.
Kelly
Okay, that makes me feel better. I just. And I really don't want to put all of this on to Rodney Atkinson, because I don't even know his name. And I'm like, he still did the song, and I'm sure he's a good kid, but just the way that he's singing in cursive and the way he's looking at the camera and, like, just. He. He's giving. Like, he's too cool for it. And I can't ever have my son be too cool for me.
Liz
Well, I think. I think you're. I think he will be too cool for you, but, yeah, maybe he won't. I don't think James will. I feel like the oldest. Don't break your heart like that. You know what I mean? I feel like the oldest, but it is hard to be a boy mom, because I just feel like Tyler wasn't really a mama's boy. Like, Craig isn't really a mama's boy, but we have daughters. I don't know, Liz. I feel you. I feel you. But, yeah, don't put that on Rodney, because he's just trying to, like, you know, I'm not putting it on.
Kelly
On Rodney's son. And it's darling for them, and I'm happy for them, and it's not a reflection on them. It's just like, I wasn't ready to see. I guess I just wasn't ready to see that. And just like so much of my life that hasn't happened yet flash before my eyes, and I'm unprepared.
Liz
Totally. Well, anyway, that was our. That was a bit of our weekend. A bit of our quick initial thoughts on today's episode. We're gonna do a model lineup, which, for those who don't know, is. Well, you'll just see when we get there. We're gonna do model lineup. Industry news. Ditch the drive thru.
Kelly
Yes, I am. Yes.
Liz
Any other tangents are welcome.
Kelly
They tend to just sneak in there. So we have to keep things, you know, short. But we are going to Do a model lineup of, like, children's Disney, whatever you want to say. Children's songs that, like, go the hardest. Like, your dream playlist. This came to me the other day when Maddie and I were listening to James's playlist in the car and singing along, and then I noticed that James had fallen asleep, and Maddie and I were just two grown adults, like, singing to children's songs. So I thought that we could just. We could have a little model lineup.
Liz
I love it.
Kelly
So I'm gonna go first, if you don't mind. No.
Liz
Well.
Kelly
And can I.
Liz
Okay. Yeah, it's fine.
Kelly
Well, it's just this was a song that inspired it. I'm not saying it's the biggest banger, but this was the one that inspired the model lineup I did.
Liz
And we're both going to pick four.
Kelly
You say gonna pick four? Yeah.
Liz
Okay. And then you guys are gonna tell us who has the better. Like, who has the better track? Who has a better set list.
Kelly
Correct. What is the song called? Oh, you're welcome. You're welcome. From Moana. What can I say? Except.
Liz
Well, it's got the. I could go on and on.
Kelly
I could.
Liz
We can't sing too much because no one's gonna like it, honestly.
Kelly
I could go on and on. I can explain every natural phenomenon. Yeah. It was written by Lin Manuel Miranda.
Liz
Whenever something is written.
Kelly
I knew this is gonna piss you off. That's why I said it.
Liz
Whenever something is written by Lin Manuel Miranda.
Kelly
Lin Manuel Miranda.
Liz
Elizabeth has to say it multiple times in the conversation.
Kelly
You don't respond because you ignore me. I'm, like, hurting me.
Liz
Okay, well, I'm gonna go with. We don't talk about Bruno, who I think was also. I think actually also happened to be written by Lin Manuel.
Kelly
Wow. It. It is a bop. I'm gonna say I'm really stuck on the Lin Manuel Miranda ones now, because I do have a good one. I'm. But I'm gonna. I'm gonna go to another famous musician, and that's Phil Collins, and I'm going to go with. You'll be in my heart.
Liz
Yeah. Yeah. Tarzan has such a soundtrack.
Kelly
Such a soundtrack.
Liz
This is so hard. I'm gonna go make a man out of you, Mulan.
Kelly
Oh, that is such a good one. I should have done that one, you know.
Liz
Make a. Make a man out of you. I. Mulan is a bibbidi bop.
Kelly
Oh, man. There are so many good ones.
Liz
Mine. My list. I'm just telling you, my list is a little. It's not niche, but it's not. It's not your obvious.
Kelly
Go the distance, Elizabeth.
Liz
That was on my list.
Kelly
Go the distance. Yeah. Hercules has bops. Bops. Hercules, Honestly, one. Like any of the Muses songs I love. Hercules has a lot of good ones. I'm. I'm choosing Go the Distance because I think it's the most iconic, but really, I could have picked any Hercules song and just plopped it right in there and been happy.
Liz
They're interchangeable.
Kelly
Yeah.
Liz
I'm gonna say under the sea.
Kelly
Yeah.
Liz
I like. I like a musical number, and that's, you know, I'm not always into, like a. If I'm truly, like, jamming it in the car, you know, part of your world, it's fine. It's here. Of course, like, we listen to it, but, like, we'll all go hard for under the Sea. We'll all go hard for it.
Kelly
We'll all go hard for it. And if you listen to the lyrics, a very. A lot of puns.
Liz
Yeah.
Kelly
You know, I think that. I think Land, Minuel, and Miranda could never. Could never have come up with those puns. This is really, really, really hard because there's so many directions.
Liz
Oh, I got a great one. I'm. I. I was mad that you took my Hercules, but now I'm over it. Like, you're gonna be mad when I tell you what I have unless you come up with it.
Kelly
Okay. Again, it's. It's a little bit. It's a little bit niche, but I think we can all agree it's a great song. When Will My Life Begin? From Rapunzel. From Tangled.
Liz
You're gonna be mad.
Kelly
What?
Liz
Prince Ali.
Kelly
I sing that to James all the time.
Liz
I know Prince Ali.
Kelly
Prince Ali, fabulous. He. Alia babwa. This is what we do. We. We made up a song for James. We go, Prince Jamie, fabulous. He gave him a baba. Strong as 80 regular babies. Definitely. And we have, like. We have, like, two or three additional lyrics. Kel. Honestly, combining all eight of these songs makes the ultimate playlist. But we're gonna. We'll post it on Instagram and you can tell us who won. So Kelly's playlist is. We don't talk about Bruno. Make a man out under the Sea. And Prince Ali. Is that the name of the song? Prince Ali.
Liz
Yeah.
Kelly
And Liz was. You're welcome. You'll be in my heart. Go the distance and when will my life begin.
Liz
That's the bop. And, you know, we didn't have. Nothing's overplayed. I mean, Maui's a little Overplayed.
Kelly
But yeah, but I play it every time. I play it every time. But you know what actually is the most iconic Disney song of them all? Circle of Life. Yeah, that's a good one too because the first note that's played immediately every. Everyone knows what it is, which is hard to do, is that as soon as you hear the ah, you know it's Circle of Life, you know it's Lion King.
Liz
Totally. My kids have been obsessed with the Lion King Tony's lately. It's like they just go on phases and like they listen to the same one all the time. And right now it's Lion King. And as soon as you put the Lion King Tony on.
Kelly
Is the first.
Liz
Is the first note. Is that what, what's like the other version of kids movies that isn't Disney? DreamWorks.
Kelly
DreamWorks has some really good ones. Is.
Liz
But does DreamWorks not have the songs?
Kelly
No, I mean like when I think DreamWorks, I think, I think DreamWorks has really good playlist. Like if you think about the Shrek playlist, it's iconic but they're not, they're not writing the songs. But they, their scores are good. Are they called scores?
Liz
See, you know what they had though?
Kelly
Huh?
Liz
They have Trolls, which I don't think.
Kelly
You'Re on Trolls yet, but no, I'm not there.
Liz
Trolls has some good, some good songs. Yeah, I don't know. And there's so many like speaking of Disney movies, there's so many live actions coming. If we talked about like just the fact that they can't be bothered to like come up with an original idea and everyone's just doing a live action.
Kelly
What's crazy about the Lion King live actions is that it's still all. It's not live action, it's just better animations. It's cgi. Like that's crazy.
Liz
Such a good point.
Kelly
I think about that all the time when I'm watching it and I'm genuinely.
Liz
Asking this, like I'm genuinely asking this. Who are these live actions for? Like who is their ideal for?
Kelly
They're four adults but.
Liz
Because who is there? Because I, at least at my kids ages, they would rather watch an animated movie still.
Kelly
Yeah.
Liz
But I don't know if by their time they're 10, then are like, would they rather watch a live action or like, is it still just too much of a baby movie for them? Because I can also see a 10 year old being like, I don't want to watch a little memory, like that's baby movie. But maybe they're not saying that I don't know what 10 year olds are doing.
Kelly
I don't know either. I'm not ready to find out.
Liz
No, but you know what? Live action. So anyway, Stitch is all the rage.
Kelly
Okay, Stitch, live action. Again, not live action, just an animated alien. But sure.
Liz
People seem very excited about that one though. Like I'm already seeing. It's kind of like having like a wicked moment where it's like. And they do this like every summer. Like it was Barbie and it was wicked and it's like all the merch that you see in Target and Walmart is like Stitch.
Kelly
I was wondering why I've seen so much Stitch lately. Because thought Stitch like Juicy Couture was out and was not making a comeback, but apparently it is.
Liz
And I don't think the live action or the CGI stitch is quite cute enough.
Kelly
Let me see. Oh, he's pretty cute. He's pretty cute. Kyle.
Liz
You think?
Kelly
Yeah, I think he's pretty precious. Okay.
Liz
But you know what? Live action. I'm very excited that's coming out. What how to train your dragon.
Kelly
They have a hottest ringers rag in live action.
Liz
Yes, Elizabeth.
Kelly
So have you been living? Hold on, I thought that that was fake. No, I thought that was not real. 2025. Okay, so how to train a dragon in Streamworks. So Dreamworks is hopping on the train now. But again, who is it for?
Liz
I'm just like wondering like because you know, they don't come out. No one comes out with any product without saying like who your ideal client is. Like even like brands that we've worked with, they've been like, you know, our ideal client is, you know, and you can like work, you can work in market like outside of that. But like you have the person you're creating it for. And I just would love to know like who is the ideal person they're creating these live actions for. And also it's all about like getting people to go to the movies. Because I was listening to, I guess it was maybe like a tick tock or something and they were just saying like there's the reason there's no more like rom coms the way that there were is because it's just too expensive to make them because they just don't sell at the movies anymore.
Kelly
Really? Why?
Liz
Because people, I guess people just like aren't like going on a date to the movies. I don't know. But that's why like the streaming services like Netflix will like come out with like a rom com because like they're Never gonna make it back to the theaters.
Kelly
That's so sad.
Liz
So that to go to the theaters, had to these like, high production. I don't know where are you at on theaters?
Kelly
I like a movie theater. I'm not in my. Maddie and I would go on date nights very, very frequently to the theater. Obviously it's hard to do now. Obviously it's hard to do now and again.
Liz
I would love to be forced to sit in a theater and not be able to look at my phone during a movie. Because you really.
Kelly
I really enjoy. Yeah, I really enjoy it. I like watching movies. I like watching new movies. I like being part of it. I like the popcorn. I like a reason to, you know, have some candy. But yeah, I don't do it.
Liz
You don't do it?
Kelly
I don't do it. I'm excited to get back to that stage if they're still around. I do think of movie theaters. I think movie theaters need to figure out some sort of way to evolve.
Liz
And it's just the age old question, like, someone's gonna do it. So I was listening to the Skinny Confidential podcast and they were talking. I don't know what they were talking about, but the thing I like that she said was you always have to be like, if you're a brand, like, you always have to be like, disrupting yourself because like, why isn't Blockbuster, Netflix, like, they just got outsmarted. Why didn't the taxi cabs comp with Uber?
Kelly
They got too comfortable.
Liz
They got. You just. You get too comfortable. You think you like, own the market and then someone comes in and takes the market or makes a new market and takes it away from you.
Kelly
It's crazy.
Liz
You know how we're like. Subs was like the. The master class. And the liquid death guy, I can't. I think about him daily at this point in my life.
Kelly
Yeah.
Liz
And it's like, who thought we needed more water? Like, his product just. His product is just freaking water. Like, the fact that bottled water made it as an industry in general is insane to me.
Kelly
Yeah. Yeah.
Liz
And then the fact that there we could have so many brands of bottled water.
Kelly
Yeah. The masterclass was really good because he. He entered an oversaturated market, but just did it so differently that it works and that it made people go, huh? And made people. Anyway, I'm in full blown. I'm in a lot of different modes right now, but when I'm not thinking about like bottle the bottled water industry, I'm hyper fixated on Georgia's birthday party.
Kelly
Okay, what do we got?
Liz
Well, I. So I think someone could roll the tapes where it's like, I'm not doing a family party for every single birthday. Like, remember when I went on like that soapbox?
Kelly
Yeah.
Liz
But then we had the experience with like Hattie and the princesses at age 4 and I was like, I'm so happy I didn't do it at five. Like, it was just the perfect thing. And I definitely am not gonna, I'm not gonna give myself like super hard and fast rules on. I do birthdays for this and I don't do this. Like, I'm just gonna kind of go with it a little bit and kind of see and like, see what I'm in the mood for, you know? But I'm. George really wanted to have a birthday party and I was like, okay, I am inviting friends and I'm not doing a full blown meal. Like, I'm gonna order pizza. So like, if an adult's coming, like, either grab a slice or eat after. Like, I'm not doing like a full blown meal. I'm gonna order pizza because it's a reptile themed birthday party and I have a reptile guy coming.
Kelly
You love to book the live entertainment. One thing about this, one thing about Kelly, she has a party. There's gonna be live entertainment there.
Liz
I just like really wanted there there. I, I got a wreck for a guy who like will bring reptiles and do a little show. I looked it up. I'm like, that feels truthfully like a value for what it is. And it's like his present. You know what I mean? Yeah, no, yeah, that's the present. I'm not going out and like buying like a bunch. I, I bought him something at like that JBF sale. I bought him like a nerf gun, like target thing that lights up and like, I'm gonna give him that mom and dad. I'll give him a present. And he's having a freaking birthday party and I put no gifts on the invitation. Guarantee everyone shows up with a gift anyway.
Kelly
Yeah, true.
Liz
I like, I don't like, I'm sure George will like it, but like to. I don't really get like gifts at a birthday party from friends.
Kelly
Yeah. I think that we've all pretty much agreed that we're against them. Like the amount of times that we've had the conversation on this podcast of how do I say no gifts? Like most people don't want them. I just think like, as a collective of people and moms, we just kind of need to like set the new standard that like, here's the thing, there's no need for children to bring gifts to a birthday party and there's no need to give goodie bags at a birthday party. Like, let's all save our money and like, let's just let them get together and have pizza and have cake and like play and run around and watch us watch a reptile show.
Liz
Yeah. I don't know. I feel like kids birthday parties and I just think I. One thing about me is like after receiving all of the cr, all of the controversy, controversial dms, from the mommy makeover that they had my kids school, I'm just gonna like let people do what they want to do. I'm actually, I'm actually backing up, backing off from this conversation because I'm just like here for whatever you want to do.
Kelly
Ok. Okay. So if you get an invit. If George gets an invitation to a birthday party and says no gifts, what are you doing?
Liz
I'm not going to bring a gift.
Kelly
Okay.
Liz
Yeah, but if it doesn't, I, But I. If it doesn't, I'm going to bring a gift.
Kelly
If it doesn't say no gifts, you will bring a gift.
Liz
And I'm not judging a parent either way.
Kelly
Okay. You know, yeah, sure, I agree. Sometimes we go out to like try and have a take on something and it's like, turns out, you know, not everything is worth having to take on, Elizabeth.
Liz
Not everything is worth having to take on. I have a personal take, but that's not. I have what I'm doing personally. But that's not even a take.
Kelly
Yeah, you know, like a. How you're existing in this.
Liz
Well, it's just like even like you and I have I think started to do this with just like the way we're doing like slightly different things, like with James and Fred and Sloan and Libby. Like, we are two people who could not be more similar. Spend so many of so much of our life together and like, we have differences in how we're raising our kids. And I feel the. I just fear they're all gonna turn out to look like Rodney Atkinson. You know, I think it's all just going to come back to that. They're all gonna get the flippy floppy hair.
Kelly
No, they're all gonna sing in cursive.
Liz
And they're all gonna sing in curses.
Kelly
I can't even do it.
Liz
Okay.
Kelly
Incursive.
Liz
Well, are you ready for industry news where I spill the hot tea going on the auto industry.
Kelly
Ah, yeah, girl.
Liz
So let's talk about the fact that the Airs is a new Jeep Grand Cherokee coming out in 2026.
Kelly
Wow. Wow, wow, wow.
Liz
The Jeep Grand Cherokee. You know what I'm gonna say about Jeep? Here's the story from car and driver. Jeep teased a refresh 26 grand Cherokee which will be, which will be revealed in full later this year. The midsize SUV gets a revised front end styling with an updated headlight and reworked grills. The cabin is largely the same, but features simplified in the climate control and smaller knobs that now live on either side of the touchscreen. So this is for, from what I'm reading, this is for the Grand Cherokee and the Grand Cherokee L. The Grand Cherokee l is the third row version. The Grand Cherokee is the two row version. Apparently sales from last year have declined 12%.
Kelly
Oh.
Liz
So. Which doesn't sound like a ton to me, but I guess like 12% is 12%. It went from 244,000 units to 216,000 units. But I fear this is a Jeep problem, not a Grand Cherokee problem, people. I'm telling you, Jeep is not Stellantis. Isn't, isn't, isn't. They're just not doing well.
Kelly
They need to redefine themselves like Crocs or else they're going to fade away. Like they need. I agree. I just. They're. Something's not working for them and I'm not. I can't really even put my finger on what it is. Maybe it's the styling. It's not as exciting. I think the Jeeps have like such a reputation for safety. Bad safety.
Liz
Well, I think so. Stellantis is just Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram. I Think the problem is within every brand, they all are kind of lost with identity. And brand identity is really important when it comes to cars. Like, even though the models are so different, you don't want to be like a live action Disney movie. Like, you don't want to know who it's not for.
Kelly
So many callbacks in today's episode.
Liz
So many callbacks.
Kelly
So.
Liz
I. I'm excited. I don't think it's going to be anything groundbreaking, though.
Kelly
Yeah, what they say, like a refresh, it's not going to be anything crazy. Yeah.
Liz
I think it's more just of like a refresh. But, like, even the interior that they showed, I'm telling you, it's just so much screens and it just feels like too nice of an interior to be a. Not. This sounds wrong. I want to say, like, to be a G. Like, that sounds bad, but.
Kelly
Oh, yeah, it does look nice. I don't get the screen in front of the passenger.
Liz
I don't get the screen. So, like, if you guys don't know we're talking about, you sit in the driver's seat or. Sorry, you sit in the passenger seat and there's a screen. It's like, who asked for that? Don't we? And it's to the point, like, it's getting a little out of touch, dare I say, because, like, people can't afford cars. And Jeep's like, okay, we know it's five grand more, but look, now the passenger can control the climate control from the screen versus, like, three inches over.
Kelly
Yeah.
Liz
It's like, let's realign on some safety.
Kelly
Yeah.
Liz
Or like, some safety costs, some value. Some cost.
Kelly
Yeah.
Liz
And that was another interesting takeaway from our. From our, like, grilling of, like, the Ford engineers. It was just like, why don't you do that? And it's like, well, it's cost. It's cost versus, like, what will sell. Like, there's definitely a formula to, like, they could make a car do everything, but how do you pick? And I don't. I don't think you were at this event, but one time was. I was at a Buick event and there was like a big. I asked him, I was like, what was like a big, like, disagreement that the team had? Because I'm just like, I'm so curious.
Kelly
Question.
Liz
No, it's such a good. I'm telling you, like, we're the only ones asking these questions.
Kelly
That's a high mileage question.
Liz
Thank you. And the girl was like, well, you know, this is a. This. It was like the Buick and Vista. So it's like a lower price car. But she's like, we, we know that so many women buy Buicks. So we wanted, when you flip down the visor and you open up the mirror like there wasn't a light originally and we all said like no. Like we know this is supposed to be like a twenty, you know, thirty thousand dollar car but like we want to prioritize that light there just interesting.
Kelly
So many little decisions that have to be made like that.
Liz
So many little decisions.
Kelly
Yeah.
Liz
And I just, I, I do wonder though, like between, and this is just speculation, like I don't have like any, I'm just, you know, I'm just, I'm talking like most people do. I do just wonder if we'll see a trend with like that people rolling back technology and people rolling back some things in the cars to keep the price a little bit lower.
Kelly
I hope, I think we will. I think that even one example at the top of my head of just like the Expedition when they came out with the iPad screen and that didn't do well. So then they kind of backtracked away from the, the fully integrated screen and they put buttons back. Like I think that is a big, a big move. Now I don't know how that affects like costs and everything but I, I, I, I think that that's, I think the importance of button to screen ratio, I think that they're realizing is, is important.
Liz
Yeah, but, and then we have like the slate motor. Who's that new EV brand that has crank windows and it'll be interesting to see if those sell. I mean I genuine, like I don't know what's gonna happen. I just feel like people have been squeezed and pushed so much already that I just really think these car manufacturers and I know unfortunately a lot of them are like too far in the pipeline but like I just think like who's gonna be the car manufacturer to come out and be like hey, we're gonna lower our price of our starting trim. Like who's gonna say that?
Kelly
Who's gonna say that? It just, it feels like there should be an in between where I can have an affordable car but not have roll down windows. Like just features that are unnecessary to exist. Speaking of top of my head, like Hyundai and Kia, like passenger talk unnecessary, cut costs, cut it. Cool concept, cut it. I don't need it. I'd rather save money than have that. I mean there's so many features within those, within those cars that we don't even touch on, on the, in the infotainment screen, all the different things you can do. Cut it. Give me a better price. Ambient lighting. It's cool. I don't need it.
Liz
Refrigerated. Refrigerated. Center consoles. Cut it.
Kelly
Cut it.
Liz
And it's frustrating when you get, like, the trim levels because then, you know, to get some of the features, like, of each feature, I think it's worth it. I like leather.
Kelly
I like leather.
Liz
But then if you want leather, then you have to get a bunch of other stuff, too. And I'm telling you, it's just all this technology. And the other problem is people don't have a good user experience with it because they don't know how to use it. And then I think that also just drives down their overall, like, vehicle satisfaction. So, like, when Jeep comes out with something and it's this tech that they didn't ask for, that they spent all this money on, that they don't really know how to work that then breaks like, there's just nothing. There's. There's not enough. Bring it to the table. It's. Yeah, I would like.
Kelly
Wireless charger. Cut it everywhere. Across the board.
Liz
Cut it. Those things. I don't. It barely works. It overheats. My phone takes forever to get a charge. I don't like those at all. Cut it.
Kelly
Okay. But you know what is something so interesting that I learned from the Ford engineer. He was such a wealth of knowledge. So, you know, in your car. Every car apparently has this. You know how, like, where you have your cup holders, there's always some, like, a. A topper to it. Like, you can always close it in some way, but most of the time it's just open, hidden away. The reason they have that is because that's supposed to be a spot for you to, like, put your phone or put your lip gloss or put your keys, and then you can close it when you're driving so that they're not projectiles, which is just.
Liz
No, by that. And I. I have actually thought about it frequently since. Since that discussion.
Kelly
I just never thought about why they did that. And it was just cool to. I mean, no one uses it for that reason, but it was just. It was just cool to hear that. That's the. Why. I just. I like to know why things are the way that they are. I just thought it was a way to, like, keep things looking sleek. But no, there's a purpose.
Liz
There's a purpose. Last story. I just want to touch on. I feel like it's been touched on a lot, so I'm not gonna dive too into it, but just in case you see a headline and you're like, oh, or maybe if you hadn't seen the headline, I want to tell you what it's about. But there's an updated, there's some new car seat standards that have gone into a, gone into place. It's called FMVSS213A. So if you see it like it's, it's kind of crazy but basically it's, it's new regular. It's new requirements for car seat manufacturers in terms of like side impact regulations. So it's, it's just to push the car seat manufacturers to make things safer. It's like, hey, this is the new standard. So now seats have to meet this. Now seats that are being sold have to meet the standard. So some people might go into a panic being like, oh my gosh, does my current seat meet this? Like, is my seat still safe? Your seat is still safe. If your seat's not inspired, installed correctly, being used correctly, it's still incredibly safe. Just be aware like the next time you replace your car seat, like that might be. It will have this already built into it. Like there's nothing new you have to do. It's just like when a new car comes out with like a new safety feature.
Kelly
Yeah.
Liz
We don't all go buy out like free. I'm like, go buy a new car.
Kelly
Your car. Just next time that they've ever been.
Liz
It might have this.
Kelly
Yes. Yeah.
Liz
So that's just like, it's not like kind of a topic. It's just. And this is good. This is good.
Kelly
It's good. I did get some questions. I did get some questions on that.
Liz
Yeah.
Kelly
As well. Okay, well, are you ready for ditch the drive thru where we give you an easy dinner recipe to mix it up to get you out of your dinner.
Liz
Yep. Do you have one?
Kelly
No.
Liz
To the emails.
Kelly
Okay, well, I found one in our emails. Thank goodness. And she said the best summer DTD.
Liz
And see, I need to be in my summer DTD mood.
Kelly
I'm bringing you one of my favorite DTDs for summer grilling season. Pineapple pork chops. Now you can also use chicken, but I could see how pork chops are better. Okay, you're going to get pork chops. Boneless, skinless, two cans of pineapple slices. Do not drain. Half cup of soy sauce or coconut aminos, half cup of light brown sugar. Place the pork chops or chicken in a bag. Add one can of pineapple with juice, soy sauce and half of the Brown sugar in a separate bag, mix the other can of pineapple with the remaining brown sugar. Let them both marinate for one hour to one day. The longer the better. Throw them babies on the grill and black Blackstone Pineapple does not take very long. I like to cook them slow and low to get them caramelized. Serve with veggies or rice on the side.
Liz
Wait, what do you do with the other bag?
Kelly
You put it all on the. On the grill.
Liz
That seems a little messy.
Kelly
You. It does seem a little bit on the grill. Slash black zone. Yeah, I don't know what you're doing with the other one. I'm a little bit confused on that.
Liz
Yeah, I think with the other one, maybe that's just like sauce on the side. Like an extra sauce.
Kelly
Yeah, maybe. Maybe, like cook them on the stove.
Liz
I think the. But here's what. And here's what you can do with that. Like, you know, everyone just go the extra step. Type into Chat C Chat gbt. Download the app if you haven't and be. Just ask them for the recipe. Like, what's the recipe for something like this?
Kelly
I love a marinade that I can just then throw on the grill. Catch me doing that all summer.
Liz
All summer. We love a grill. I forgot. I hope everyone stuck around for this. Remind me to say this on next week's episode too, because I've been using Chat GPT all the time. Like, I'm officially the Kool Aid. I'm drunk off it. I'll be honest. And I have the best new bedtime hack to share. Brought to you by Chat gbt.
Kelly
So good. We should write this down.
Liz
Okay, I know, because I want to, like, say that because I feel like people didn't stick around. People might not have stuck around. They might have stopped after what he did with the second bag.
Kelly
Yeah.
Liz
So bedtime stories roll around. You know, I've got three kids. They all have different interests. So I asked each one of my kids, I said, you know, they asked me to tell them a story. They like when I tell them stories from, like, my childhood. And this is like after we read the books, like, the lights are off. I'm like, wait, mom, will you just tell us a story? So I went to. I said, hattie, what do you want a story about? She goes, rainbows said, okay, George, what do you want to story about? Snakes said, okay, Fred, what do you want to story about? Tractors. So I typed in chat GPT. Write me a 5 minute bedtime story that includes rainbows, tractors, and snakes. And I wanted To I. I wanted them to bring it home, give it a nice good meaning. And I said, make the. Make the message in the story about loving your neighbor. Chy gave it to me. Sammy the snake in the rainbow. In the rainbow tractor.
Kelly
Yeah.
Liz
A harrowing story.
Kelly
Yeah.
Liz
Of a snake who saves baby kittens despite people thinking he was not neighborly.
Kelly
So smart Kelly.
Liz
So ask your kid what do you want to hear a story about? And then you can just prompt chat. You just tell Chad. She's your assistant. I. I'm just choosing to be on the side of AI because I think I'd rather be on the robot's good side than the bad side, if I'm being honest.
Kelly
Totally.
Liz
And I read something, it was like, chatgpt is not going to replace your job. Someone who knows how or AI is not going to replace your job, someone who knows how to use it's going to replace your job. And that isn't like. So I don't know how we can use it more than we are. But I don't know if this is like news for Juicy Couture or Toms, but like, just don't let this be another thing that Crocs and Uggs beats you to.
Kelly
Okay, well, you know what I did with Chachi BT the other day? I have a bum knee. I like turned 30, worked out one time and now I can't walk. So that's super fun. But niece jacked. So I first I called my brother's girlfriend who's a physical therapist and she told me what she thinks it was. And then I asked Chachi PT and they were aligned on what it was. But then I was like able to ask Chachi PT like follow up questions. And then they were like giving me all this information about this thing and then they're like, do you want a five day stretch routine to get your knee feeling better? I'm like, yeah, I do. And then they gave me one.
Liz
Oh, she's being so thoughtful about is chatgpt. Do we have a pronoun?
Kelly
I don't know what the pronouns are, but it was like, yeah, exactly. I didn't even think.
Liz
She's asking follow up questions. I asked for how to do a baked potato in the oven. Told me, and it goes, do you want, do you want to come up with some topping ideas? Like, what do you got?
Kelly
What do you got? That would be great. Thank you.
Liz
I'll fish. Yeah. Download the app. Just try to use it.
Kelly
It's a lot of fun. It's a lot of fun. But guys, anyway, with that. That is going to be our episode. So thank you so much for tuning into the Carpool Podcast, and we'll talk to you next time.

Kelly (00:52): "No, no. Mothers don't get to relax and maybe it's my kids' ages, but like I want to hang out with my family, but there's just, there's no world where like I'm just hanging out with my family and relaxing."
