Welcome to the carpool podcast with Kelly. We had a barn shower last night. And by a barn shower, I mean I physically. I made the water warm, not a monster. And I hosed off my children in the barn, like, in the. Like, in the wash rack that I went to with the.
B
And, Liz, I just don't think I like this stage of life that I am in that also happens to be when you have a baby, which is postpartum, which is just, like, the worst.
A
Your mom time off starts now.
B
Welcome back to the carbo podcast with Kelly and Liz.
A
Hi.
B
S. Feels like I haven't talked to you in forever. You're on vacay, and, like, normally you're calling me so many times a day, and now you're like. Like, you were too busy, and it was weird.
A
I was too busy. I also think, in a way, you're so busy, and in a way, you're just, like, so pregnant. So you're just like, also very readily available. So I think you're probably just feeling it.
B
Why? Yeah, I guess, maybe.
A
Yeah. The Stumpies went on a family vacay, and it was really fun.
B
Yeah.
A
Really everything I wanted in more. It was fun to just go with my little fam. Just like, you know, we leave places when we want to leave places. You know, we eat cereal for dinner if we want to eat cereal for dinner. Like, it was just so easy.
B
And it's. The reason you're saying that is because, like, a lot of the times when we go to the Ozarks, it's like multiple families or mom and dad are there. There's just like, you're. You know, we've even got. We've got three younger siblings like, that don't have kids. So it's like, oh, they want to go do happy hour. And we're like, no. Like, you were on your own timeline, your own world. Like, the Stumpies were doing what the Stumpies wanted to do. And that's a very unique situation for our families.
A
Yeah, we had a blast. My kids love the lake. I think I actually like the lake over the beach. I know that's, like, kind of crazy to say.
B
I don't think that's crazy to say, but lakes are.
A
They're so beautiful. Like, it's so fun to, like, get on the water, like, remind me if I'm wrong, but on a beach, you just, like, sit in the sand. And that is fun. That is fun. But I feel like there's more to do because if you're going down to the ocean, you want to go on a boat like that costs more money. Look at. And now I'm. My husband. My husband, the whole time was just saying, you know, we're. We're. We're keeping receipts. We were doing our. Tallying our total. He was being so crazy.
B
Someone did say you needed to put all of your. Your totals onto a travel credit card, so that way that could fund your next vacation. That would have been a good idea. Tyler needs to learn more about the travel credit cards. I don't think that's it. I don't think that's a crazy thing to say. I think that it kind of depends on how you grew up, because I don't know how to do the beach properly. Like, I don't know what blankets you need. I don't know the umbrellas. Like, I don't like lugging all that stuff to set up on a sandy beach. Like, it doesn't sound like the most relaxing to me. Whereas, like, when I. Sans kids, when I am on a boat, I am, like, the happiest person in the world. Like, I love being on a boat in a lake.
A
Who doesn't?
B
It doesn't. It doesn't matter what kind of boat. It doesn't matter what lake. If I'm on a pontoon boat in a small lake going seven miles per hour, I'm the happiest camper in the world.
A
See, I agree. I think I, like, I feel like if I ever do a beach vacation, it's like I want to go somewhere with a beach and, like, maybe we have a beach day or two, but I couldn't just, like, go down to Florida and go to the beach every day for four days or five days. I think I would get tired of that.
B
And I agree.
A
I have four kids. You love a cooler. You need chairs. You need a tent. There's so much stuff that you have to take there at the lake to post up. You, like, can bring everything on the boat, or you leave it on the dock or you have it in the house. Like, it just seems a little easier.
B
Yeah, but again, like, we. I just think we don't.
A
We didn't really grow up. We've been to the beach, but, like,
B
we've been to the beach.
A
We did not do yearly beach vacations growing up.
B
No, we don't have, like, a beach house. Like, I also think it might be different, too, if you had, like, a beach house where it's like, you could walk out onto the beach.
A
Oh, you mean I give it. Like, you rent a house on the beach. And then it's like, yeah, okay, sure.
B
That feels different.
A
I don't know. I just. I looked at my husband multiple times that week and I was like, you were right. You were right. Because it's all. Yeah, it was fun. It was, but it was hard at times and I'm just happy. We were two hours from home in a place that we knew, and the kids had a blast. We went tubing. George and Hattie went tubing. Fred doesn't really like the water, which is fine. Like, doesn't want to go in it, doesn't want a tube. He likes the boat, but he does not go in the water. We put George and Hattie on the tube. Libby is clawing, clawing at me to try to get on the tube. Claw. She's. She's supposed to be 2 in September. And I'm like, what is she crying about? Until I was like, I think she wants to go. And I'm like, okay, well, I can't send her on the tube of George and Hattie. She's too little for that. So I'm like, give me the life jacket. So then me and Libby went tubing and she was, I mean, I've never seen her so happy. She's a. She is such a water bug. She. She was swimming in the lake. She was. We went to a couple restaurants that had a pool. Swimming in the pool. You know, she loves the water.
B
Kelly called me while she was on her vacation. One of the few times I got to speak to you and you said, I just feel like I am. I'm looking back and reflecting. Like you're on the other side of the mountain where you're not, you're not pregnant, you're not breastfeeding. Like, you're not pulling down a wet swimsuit to try and like feed a baby like you are.
A
No, you're free. You know, the lake's a very interesting benchmark for us because we've been going there.
C
We've been.
A
Elizabeth and I have been going there our whole life. Our dad's been going there his whole life. So I have gone there every year. I've had kids. And you know, there was a time where every year was, was getting harder and harder because it was like, then we go with George. And the first year I went, George was only five weeks old. It was the first place I ever went with him, basically. And it was, you know, I thought it was hard.
B
Lol.
A
Lol. With a five week old baby.
B
Sounds like a vacation. Yeah.
A
And then, you know, then the next year we had George and Hattie. And then the next year, we had George and Hattie, but I was pregnant, like, and year we had Fred, like, it was just, it kept getting harder. And I remember two summers ago, George was 4, Hattie was 3, Fred was 16 months. And I was so pregnant with Libby. No, George was five, Hattie was three. And I was so pregnant with Libby. And I looked at her, I'm like, this is our hardest summer. Like, this is, this is, like, the peak. This is it. And then it's downhill from here. And then the following summer, we had the four kids, but I was. Libby was, you know, nine months old, but I wasn't pregnant, so, like, the kids were older, so it felt easier. And this summer, I got emotional. I literally did feel like I was looking. I was on Everest looking down at all I had accomplished. And I was like, I, I survived that. Literally. Not to sound too dramatic, but I did survive it.
B
And you were also saying, too, you just, yeah, you survived it. And you, you've always been. And I could tell you about this, this about you before you even had kids. Like, I always knew you were going to thrive more as a kid mom. Just being the oldest of four siblings, Kelly and I babysat our younger siblings a lot. Like, we were coming up with activities for them a lot. Like, we, we, we hosted a summer camp at our house. Like, kids getting kids excited to do things is something that you've always been really good at. And I just, I just always have known that you were going to thrive as a kid mom. And, and now you are a kid mom. Like you said, not the cones. Like, you're setting up, the stuff you're making, the meal you're packing. Like, you're just, you're in your group.
C
I love it.
A
I'm in, like, I'm telling you, I'm so, I think, I think I could be peaking right now. I'm going to be so. For real.
B
Oh, that's a sad thing to think about.
A
No, I'm okay with that. You got to pick sometime, and it can be a long peak.
D
Yeah.
B
But you know what? I, I look at mom, though, and I think you might peak more than once.
A
Totally. This is a peak, though. I'm just a peak. I am in a peak. I, I, Elizabeth and I, I mean, I'll spare you, like, the offline convo, because it was. You have to have a certain sense of humor. But, like, I, I don't, like, love babies. You know what I mean?
B
No, you're.
C
You, you.
A
I love my Babies. But, yeah, I. I am very excited to be a kid, Mom.
B
Like, you're not seeking out if someone has a baby. You're not like, can I hold them? Like, that's not your personality. No, and I said. I actually kind of agree. I. But I don't think it's that I don't like having, like, a baby with me. I just don't think I like this stage of life that I am in that also happens to be when you have a baby, which is postpartum, which is just like, the worst.
A
Like, baby just kind of wasted on a postpartum.
D
Mom.
A
You know what I mean?
B
Baby stages wasted on a postpartum. Yeah. No, you know what? It's not.
A
Because it's a joke. It's a joke.
B
No, no, no. But I mean, like, they're. They're sweet. Like, they're snuggly. Like, they're easier in some ways when your life is also really hard.
A
Yeah, you're right. But, yeah, it was a great, great weekend. My kids are so fun. I love my kids and.
B
Yeah, well, happy for you. I'm literally skipping the lake entirely this year because I just. I'm too.
A
Too pregnant to do well, Then you won't know. We won't have anything to compare. You can imagine.
B
I can imagine. I mean, yeah, no, I'm not doing it this summer, but that's okay. That is okay. Something that Maddie and I are both kind of struggling with, Maddie more so than me, is he's like, I know you are pregnant, and I know that. He's like, I see you as pregnant, and I just think, like, you're just, like, sick for a year. What I can't conceptualize is the fact that a baby is coming after this sickness. I'm like, yeah, dude, if I think about it too long, like, I'm not okay. And I'm like, yeah, no, I think three is going to, like, really rock our worlds. Like, we're kind of getting in the groove with the two, and, you know, no one's throwing up on you anymore. And I'm kind of like. I'm kind of like you. Because we have Fred, and, you know, they're the same ages, and I'm just starting over, and that is a hard thing to think about sometimes.
A
You might surprise yourself. Who knows? I felt like my probably best postpartum was after Fred.
B
Okay, that's good to hear.
A
I was thriving after Fred.
B
That's good to hear. I'm. I think I'm definitely more in my groove. I've Definitely. I've definitely hit rock bot bottom and built my way back up from there, so. Yeah, you know, we'll see.
A
Well, I just have a couple of. Yeah. So you're having a baby, like, so soon? Like, 40 days. Okay. Yeah.
B
What's that about?
A
No one knows you still don't have a name. People are kind of.
B
Yeah.
C
But you know what?
B
Next week, naming babies coming on the podcast for a consultation. Thank goodness. Just in the nick of time.
A
Yeah. And then I do want to, like, give my prediction. Well, I guess I can't do that because I know the names you're considering. I'm gonna offline, though, record what I think you're gonna end up naming her, and I'm gonna, like, timestamp it, because I want to just know if I'm right, then I should be able to post that. You know what I mean?
C
Sure.
A
I feel pretty good about my. My guess.
B
Okay, well, I don't want to know what your guess is because I don't want it to influence me.
A
I agree. I agree. I just want to say what I think because I know your list of names. I really love all of your list of names. I feel like you really. I do think you need to tell name and baby offline the name so she, like, gets your vibe, right? Or should we not do that?
B
No, we don't do that. I want to know what she has to say.
A
Same. I. I love her.
B
I. I love the baby name.
A
I know. That's one thing I'm sad about, that I'll never name another baby.
B
It's kind of exhausting. So I actually, like, would not be too sad about that.
A
Anyway, so that's coming up so soon. Also, at the end of this episode, we have our first side Hustle Summer. One of my favorite segments we do here on the podcast. And I don't give spoilers. I don't get spoilers, but it's a. It's a good one.
B
It's a good one. Side Hustle Summer. We did it last summer for those who don't know. And it's just, like, getting, like, women who have side hustles on the podcast to give ideas. And we try and choose ones that are interesting but also put, like, tangible. Like, yeah, we understand that there are women across the country listening to this podcast. So, like, could you start this in your own area? So that's what we have on the planet.
A
We don't want to do a lot where it's like, you know, you have. You're a speech pathologist who Went out on her own, like, and I'm so happy for you, but like, no one else. I mean, you have to be a speech pathologist to be able to go on your own, to, like, make it your own. So it's like just more tangible skills that you can learn.
D
Yeah.
A
Speaking of skills that you can learn, I want to kind of give an update on some of my summer goals. I ordered fabric to reupholster my bench.
B
You're gonna do it yourself?
A
Absolutely not. My mother in law texted me and said she can do it for me.
B
Thank goodness. Okay.
C
Yeah.
A
But I ordered the fabric. Did I get enough? I'm not sure. It's like, I don't know. I got two yards.
B
So what about three feet? Yeah.
A
Okay, well, that's fine. It's not that long of a bench.
B
Okay.
A
It's a three foot bench and I got two. It's a four foot bench and I got two. I got six yards.
D
Okay.
B
But I don't know what the yard is. The yardage is like across.
A
I'm not sure.
B
Square yard.
D
You know what, here's the thing.
A
I went on Spoon Flower. I bought the fabric. It was. I have 37 invested out in this as of today.
B
Okay. You might want to look at the dimensions. Just like double check on those dimensions. I did.
A
I did. Okay. I'm fine. Okay. I mean, I don't know how much fabric you need to, like, go under it.
B
I don't think it's much.
A
I don't think it's much either. So I ordered that Spoonflower Shout Out. They have the cutest fabrics and, like, they just sell. Spoonflower is a very interesting website because, like, they just sell prints and then you can, like, get that fabric to, like, whatever you want.
B
Yeah.
A
So like, the print that I like, you scroll down and you're like, oh, do you want it as a wallpaper? A curtain, a duvet cover, napkins, a placemat, a pillow, shampoo, crazy sheets, tablecloth, table runner, tea towel, throw blanket or throw pillow?
B
No, it's kind of insane.
A
No, it's insane. So, like, if I like the fabric, maybe I'll, you know, get a coordinating pillow to put on the chair in my room too. Like, I just don't know.
C
Sure.
A
Shout out spoonflower. Really, like 10 out of 10 situation. There was a lot of fabric choices. So I did choose that. You know, that's a really big goal of mine for the summer. Also a big goal of mine for the summer house improvement projects. I don't think I spoke about. This is. I Want to get shutters on my house? I've been talking about it since I moved in, so stay tuned for that.
B
Okay, well, some house updates for me. Maddie built my dresser for my baby girl. That's going in my hallway.
A
You didn't send a pic.
B
I know. I need to unfort. The. The artwork that I ordered I think is too small for the space. Ah, I know. Luckily, I love the artwork, and I could put it literally anywhere in my house and be happy. I don't know how you're supposed to know what size to order of things.
A
Like, Elizabeth, I recently also ordered a piece of art. I like the art. It came in two sizes. I got the bigger size. I'm not even sure where it's gonna go.
D
I agree.
A
Like, this is exhausting. Art is exhausting.
B
Art is exhausting.
A
Interior design. I hate interior design. And I guess I just, like, haven't had, like, a good interior designer, like, come across my desk because it's like, I don't need a whole room redesigned. Like, I just need to, like, send you this area and tell me what, like, lamp and art to buy, and I haven't, like, found that service that doesn't cost. Like, I did one, and I got a quote, and she's like, well, that would be a room design, and that starts at $1,500. And I'm like, you're insane.
B
That's.
A
I just need. I just need to know what art and lamp to buy. I just need to know what art
B
and lamp to buy, which is going to take, like. What's your hourly rate? That's going to take you an hour. Let's say your hourly rate's a hundred dollars.
A
Okay, right.
B
Then a hundred dollars. And send me the affiliate link, and I'll buy it through your link. Like, that's what I'm. That's what I'm after.
A
That's what I'm after, too. I'm telling you, I haven't found that. It has not come across my desk yet. So maybe. And I really don't think it's for. I feel as though I have tried.
B
Yeah, that's a bummer. Well, Summer, there's an idea.
A
Speaking of your interior design, I've got to share what has, like, Lissa, like, I love being a kid, mom, and I've got to share one of my new favorite things, newer things I've been doing with my children, and that is choose your own pillowcase. Let me just, like, talk people through this for a second. So, you know, I'm very hesitant to like ever share my kids sleeping arrangements because you know, people really come for my neck every time. But my kids don't have. I'm sorry, I'm just not one. My kids don't have an aesthetically pleasing Instagram room. Like, they just don't. Their room is theirs. And I, I love that for them. Like they will hang things on the walls, they have stuffed animals everywhere. Like it's not this, it's just not this like picture perfect room. Like my, like Libby's nursery is pretty cute. And I think like eventually like when I get the kids more settled into their rooms, like when Libby is, when Libby and Hattie start sharing, maybe we'll do it up. But I also just like something about the theme being childhood. At least for me. I'm sorry, that's just for me.
D
So.
A
Something my mother in law always does when my kids go to her house is when it comes time for a nap, she lets them like pick a pillowcase to put on their pillow. And she's got so many fun pillowcases, you know, that she's either like made or just found throughout the years. Most of them are from like my husband's childhood. So they're like Lion King. Like they're just fun pillowcases. And my kids always love that. I'm like, that is such a fun thing to do. So then a couple of years ago, my mother in law was cleaning out her house and she like gave me a lot of Tyler's pillowcases from when he was a kid. So then like I had these pillowcases and I'm like, okay, well now I need to get some girl ones. And now as I've been like popping into like a thrift store or like a Goodwill, like I scan the pillowcases and sometimes I find like fun character ones. Like I found a Ninja Turtle one. I just found a Monster Jam one. I'm finding these at the thrift store. They're also on Amazon, but they're just more expensive. And now we've gotten into, we change their pillowcases like every week and it's like a big deal on Sundays. It's like, bring me your pillowcase. Who wants a new pillowcase? Or if Fred's ever like fighting his nap, I'm like, let's get a new pillowcase. And it is just such a fun, it's a, it's a giving base model luxury. It's such a fun little thing to do to just change up their pillowcase. You don't have to change their whole bed Their bedding doesn't match their pillowcase. It doesn't matter.
B
Yeah, well, it's just something. It's just sometimes just something new is what you need to like, get you through to the next step in your evening, you know, and you don't like giving them new toys all the time is not obviously the solution. Like not even a new pillowcase, but a different pillowcase. Like, oh, you want to use this one this week or whatever. I like it.
A
Yeah. Or we'll be like, okay, we're having a movie night downstairs tonight. Everyone get your pillow. Let's put new pillowcases on.
B
Like, also, even if your kid does have like an aesthetically pleasing room and like you have a theme and everything, like the actual pillow that they sleep on doesn't even have to be seen. Have like a, you know, a proper, proper, like.
A
I'm not hating on I. My kids probably, I probably will decorate their rooms more. Right now it's like, it's just kind of right now three of them are in one room because they are choosing to first of all, everybody and it's just like, it doesn't feel like worth that investment right now. But once Hattie wants to share with Libby or wants.
B
Also, we just talked about how much we like hate interior designing and like
A
the stress of it now. You know who does do a good job nurturing Nook?
B
Yeah, this is true.
A
She does a good job and doesn't charge an arm and a leg.
B
Okay, that's true.
A
She'll be on a side. She'll be on a side. Hustle Summer.
B
That's. That's nursery like kids room specific though.
A
Doesn't really help the art sitch anyways. So I just, I'm saying like, just idea, maybe start thrifting pillowcases and just mix up a pillowcase. Like, you know, it just, it can't. It makes the kids feel like they have new beddings. Like if your kids have bedding that you love and it's so cute. Well, what if you just like got had threw an ugly pillowcase on it that they loved, just like it might
B
take you mix it up to get them out of their pillowcase rut.
A
It might take you further than you think is all I'm gonna say.
B
Okay, I like it.
A
Yeah.
B
Who doesn't like it?
C

B
O L Did you make any prime day purchases?
A
Well, did I make any prime day purchases? I did. Also this was one of the better prime days I think we've had especially for the car seats. The car seat sales were good this time so hopefully everyone took advantage. I do one of the car seats I bought.
B
Sure.
C
Yeah.
B
I just am curious to know what you actually pulled the trigger on.
A
Well, I bought a new evenflow Revolve because I didn't have the updated one. Yeah, I bought that one. I bought the new Diono Cambria LE which is a new Booster that arrives July 9th. I don't know. I don't know what it is. It's a new booster and I bought a peg. Another peg booster. So. Okay, that was kind of fun.
B
Love that. I didn't really do like super clickbaity purchases. I just was kind of like what do I actually need and does it happen to be on sale? Was kind of my vibe this time around. So like good. I bought some stuff for the baby so I bought like you know, I love that tubby Todd all over ointment. I've always. I always end up need to buy that for a kid cuz it just like always works well. So like that was on sale. I got a play pen that was you know, $50 off and I was going to buy it anyway. Got a new haka was a few dollars off, love. Yeah. I really just kind of went for what do I need to buy for the baby and and bought that. And is it on sale?
A
Kind of like a pre baby haul.
B
Yeah, I bought a. I bought a pack of diapers which is like the craziest thing.
A
That's so fun. I know. The only like fun purchase I bought was I got Merrick linked to those like gold bracelets. She's always wearing those booty girl bracelets and I just like bought those which I feel like we all.
B
She's obsessed with those.
A
She's. That's what I love about Mary.
B
She's passionate about it.
A
She's passionate about it. She's always going to show it. Yeah. So anyways, fun stuff.
B
Yeah, I know they were. Oh, I also bought a like the nanit floor stand.
A
Oh okay. Nan floor stand.
B
It was on sale.
A
I've never done the nanit.
B
I know you. I feel like. I don't know why. Maybe like I feel like baby cameras like came a long way from the time that George was born.
A
I agree with you.
B
And then by the time you were like, well, we just use, like, a ring camera or whatever he used for George, it was like, it's. Why fix what's not broken? Why buy? I mean, nanots are expensive. I have them. So I just need a new floor stand.
A
But so we used the nest like a nest camera with all of my kids because my cousin told me that's what she used. And I liked it. Like, it worked good. And then with Libby, I never even set up a baby monitor.
B
Really?
A
No, I've never used a baby.
B
Wow. Okay. That's so interesting.
A
Isn't that interesting? Like, isn't that so crazy about me?
B
So what you just, like, kind of, like, listen for. Because I always feel like I need to see, like, how serious their cry is, and I need to see if they're, like, laying down or if they're standing up screaming.
C
Yeah.
A
No, I never just kind of went off vibes. I always, like, meant to do it, but then I just never got around to it. Then it was like, well, I don't want to buy an. I lost the nest camera. My nest camera stopped working. I was like, well, I don't want to put something on the wall.
C
Right.
A
Like, we're almost done with this.
B
I get it.
D
You know?
B
No, I get it. That's so interesting. That's just like, such confidence that comes with having four kids.
A
I am confident. I am confident. So I'm trying to think what else I have. Oh, my gosh. Guess what I made for supper last night.
B
Well, I know.
A
Did you know I made ribs in the oven, you guys? I'm sorry. I'm an excellent cook.
B
You are an excellent cook.
A
And if I put my mind to it, I. I'm. I'm getting really good at cooking proteins, which I think is like, so home begins with love of me. But also so important because I find if you're gonna be a good hostess, which I'm. First of all, once we get back from this lake trip from. For the fourth, I have. I already have dates on the calendar. Like, your girl's getting back into her hosting era. I've been a little lazy with it, I'll be honest. Like, I'm having someone over every week. We're just gonna turn this up a little bit. I got all. I'm ready. But I feel to be a good hostess, you've gotta master the protein because it's very easy as people to bring sides. So, you know, again, I could be like, hey, I'm doing ribs tonight. Do you guys wanna come over for dinner, just bring something to go with the ribs done. And they could bring whatever they wanted to. So, anyway, I did my ribs in the oven. Sorry, I'm. They were amazing. Unbelievable.
B
What was the steps in order to make these?
A
So I bought ribs. The only hard part is, like, when you buy ribs, you have to, like, take off the membrane on the back. And, like, that just is, like.
B
We don't like that word.
A
Maybe it's not called a membrane. I don't know. You have to, like, rip this piece off. It's very easy to do, but it's just one of those things that, like, would. Where I feel like in the past, I've looked it up and, like, put the recipe back down. Because I was like, there's no way I can ever figure that out.
C
Sure.
A
But it's very easy to do. You take this part off the back that has the bones on it. And then I had this seasoning. I seasoned it front and back, wrapped them in foil, put them in the oven for three hours. At 300, I pulled them out, I took them off the foil, I put them in, like, a big roasting pan, and I sauced them with Sweet Baby Ray's. I'm sorry. Best barbecue sauce. You won't catch me using anything else.
C
I really.
A
Not to be dramatic, I don't care how amazing your barbecue sauce is. I think sweet Baby berries is the best barbecue sauce.
B
It's really good.
A
Also, such a fun fact about barbecue sauces is so many of them are made with Worcestershire sauce, which contains anchovies, which your girl obviously cannot have. So it does limit my barbecue sauces.
B
But Sweet Baby Race. Is Worcestershire sauce free?
A
Of course. It's, like, mainly sugar. Like, of course it is.
C
Of course.
A
There's so much sugar in that.
B
Yes.
A
So then I based it on the SBRs all over it turned on something called a broil on my oven, which is like 550. Like, just zaps it, broiled for five minutes to, like, let that. All that sugar. And the sweetberries caramelized. I pulled it out. I topped it with more of, like, the spicy, sweet seasoning I was using. Just, like, get a little extra seasoning on it.
C
Sure.
A
Sliced them? No, I sliced them, then I seasoned them. The kids were hammering them. All of them. We. I made three slabs. We ate all of them.
C
Okay.
B
I love ribs. My kids love ribs. Ribs are a fun summer meal. You know, I challenge you to do it this summer. Outside, tarps off. The kids, give them a popsicle after. It's a bath night. Obviously, so just like, go all the way in.
A
So something. So you're literally saying our evening. So we had the ribs, and then they kind of, like, were done eating, but they weren't done eating. So I was like, we'll take the ribs outside. So then they were eating ribs outside. And something we did when we moved in is we put hot water in the barn on. On the hose. And I. We had a barn shower last night. And by a barn shower, I mean I physically. I made the water warm. Not a monster. And I hosed off my children in the barn. Like, in the. Like in the wash rack that I went to.
B
They thought drain. Probably there.
C
A drain.
A
No, literally, they thought it was so fun. We had. So I was solo parenting with all this. I was like, I'm not taking. It's. It's really hard to, like, whatever. This seemed easier, and it was fun and easy. And then they have their crocs on. I stripped them down. They have their crocs on.
B
I love this. And then the child. This is a childhood. I mean, this is like, this is what it's about.
A
And then they run back to the house. But I was thinking about ribs. I actually think. And the thing with ribs is they're not that expensive. Like, they are expensive. I think a slab of ribs is 20 bucks. So it was. No, it's. Yeah, it was about 8. Between 18 and 20 bucks for slapper ribs. So that is expensive because it was like 60 bucks. But me, my kids ate. My family ate a lot. A lot of them. But I was like, that could be a fun thing to bring somebody who had a baby. Like, what if you just brought them ribs?
B
Yeah, I think I'm gonna bring you
A
ribs when you have your baby.
B
I'll take ribs. I mean, you're going to have to. I wouldn't let anyone else do this, but, like, you're going to have to bathe my kids after you give them ribs.
D
But true.
A
Is that too much?
B
Well, I don't know. There's just that additional layer. But kids have to. I mean, bath nights come every night in the summer. I'm sorry. Like, we're taking baths all the time. I'm being dramatic.
A
So I think you could. But I think for a family, you could give them. Depending on Big, the family is like, I probably would give you two slabs of ribs, and you probably would have enough. Two slabs of ribs. Maybe I make you guys a box of Mac and cheese and cut you up a watermelon.
B
Yeah.
A
And like, I'll make the ribs. I'LL slice them, I'll sauce them, I'll cover them in foil. You could pop them in the oven to warm them up. I think that would be like a really good post baby meal.
B
It reheats well. Or they're good cold.
A
Eat them for breakfast cold.
C
They're good cold too.
B
I know. Wow. Okay. Ribs sound fantastic.
A
I know. I was like just so excited to like master the the oven rib. And then I also made a really big decision. Speaking of food, this is just kind of like one long ditch the drive thru. But I talked to my stories this past week about like your post vacation meal like or a reset meal. Whether it's just like a long weekend or like a long vacation, you get home, you feel disgusting, you've eaten so much junk. You need to feed your family dinner. I got a lot of good suggestions, but I ended on I bought canned soup and a rotisserie chicken and some apple slices and some butter bread. Just like a simple beige meal. But that's light.
D
Yeah.
A
You know, I kind of girl dinnered my way through it. Like we had some like leftover deer sausage. I ate that. I had a couple, you know, I had like a little bit of the rotisserie chicken. I didn't really like eat a full blown bowl of soup but it was so cheap, so light, nutritious. Like it's soup. It's got some vegetables in it, it's got the chicken. We eat some apples. No minimal dishes. Yeah, everyone loved it. So I think that's gonna be my new like go to reset meal and I just think it's good to have that in your back pocket.
B
Yeah, I agree.
C
I agree.
B
I also wanted to and I usually gave like a really good just to drive through but I also wanted to give a shout out and I found this on wasn't home begins to let me. What was the other girl? Who's the other girl? What's her name? Okay, sorry. This Instagram was just. I could not remember her name. Morgan Taylor at home. One of my favorite follows. She just posted like her fast mom lunch and I made it this week and it was incredible.
A
What was it?
B
So she took. She has like, you know, prepared protein like so she had some leftover grilled chicken. Which leftover grilled chicken I find hard to do anything with. But I had leftover grilled chicken and the ticket I think for prepared protein for me with steak or chicken is like I have to cut it up when I put it in the Tupperware container, you know.
C
Okay.
B
Like I'm not Gonna cut up the chicken breast. Like I need the chicken already cut up. So.
A
Okay.
B
I like that cut up chicken breast cold. On top of a southwest salad salad bag. And she found like a protein, a southwest protein bag. I couldn't find that one, but I just got a. And she also put like black beans in hers. I also didn't do that because I didn't want to open up a can of black beans. But I just topped it, the chicken with a salad bag and it was delicious.
A
That is such a good mom lunch. Like make real chicken one night. Always have a bag salad on hand. Have a delicious lunch for yourself. Yeah, I actually have one of those sesame Asian bags that. And I have chicken, not grilled is the problem.
B
Yeah, so you have to cook it.
A
But I'm just gonna make that for supper tonight, I guess. I don't know, I'm just. I'm really enjoying like the summer eats. I haven't made anything corn related. I had to make a peach cobbler. Okay, so you make something corn related. I actually think I bring it to the lake. I found a. It's from ambitious kitchen. It's like a corn jalapeno cream cheese dip moment.
B
Oh my gosh. It sounds amazing.
A
Kind of sounds up my alley, to
B
be honest with you. It sounds amazing. It's like all the words you just said I love are like some of my favorite words.
A
And then you know what else I've been like? You know what I've been like summer cocktailing with. Okay, I did it one time, but it really hit.
B
What?
A
Sorry not to leave you out.
B
Oh, I know. I do feel a little bit left out because you're like, my life is so amazing. Like, I'm done having kids. Like, I'm having cocktails. Like, but it's fine.
A
Yeah. Okay, well, you know, let's not forget I have been in your shoes.
B
Let's hear about your fabulous cocktail.
A
So I went to. We went to a birthday party at one of our friends houses. It's like for their six year old. But like they always just throw like a really good party. You know what they do? They just do a driveway party. So like they set up, they set up, they have a cool garage. Like he's like a dj, so like he's always like playing DJ music. They have like lights that change colors to the music. They open up their garage, they set up tents, they bring fans out. They have lawn chairs instead of a kiddie pool. Like it's so simple but so great.
B
And you know what to expect too. With that, like, you know exactly what you're going to get. Don't be afraid to just do the same setup every single time. Like, people know what to expect. You don't always have to reinvent the wheel.
C
No.
A
And I've gotten better. Like, now I bring my own chair because it's like, you know, sometimes they run out of chairs. It's like they shouldn't be expected to provide chairs, too.
B
Yeah.
A
But I just, like, I think. I wouldn't think to have a driveway party. I would just assume people, like, need to come into my house, but it's like, you just don't.
B
Sure.
A
Or like, you know, we'll go in there, use the bathroom. Like, some of the kids will go to the playroom, but, like, the party's outside.
B
I love it. Love it.
A
Anyway, she always has a good spread. And she made iced tea, and she had iced tea, and then she had lemons, sugar, and then she also had some oliveino. Is oliveino everywhere or is it just where we live?
C
I don't know.
A
It's like fancy olive oil. And so she had, like, a peach olive oil, and she. And then she puts it. Put a thing of vodka out next to it. She's like, you can make, like, a spiked iced tea. Like, this is spiked iced tea. So you got iced tea. Glug.
B
Glugged.
A
Some vodka, lot of ice, lemon, a splash of that peach. Balsamic. What?
B
Wait, was it balsamic or olive oil?
A
I don't remember. I think it was balsamic. It's just like a peachy. And I only added that one time. And then I said, I don't even need that. And I was just doing unsweet iced tea with a little vodka and lemon, and it was so refreshing.
B
Okay. Don't feel like it doesn't sound good to me.
A
Well, I also haven't eaten sugar, so, like, you know, I'm kind of like, anything's fun.
B
Okay.
A
But it's better than you think.
B
Okay.
A
Because who doesn't love an iced tea?
B
I love iced tea.
C
Why?
A
Is it a little vodka to it?
B
Okay, sure.
A
And it's like. Yeah, it's just like. It's a sipper.
B
You know, it's interesting. My first pregnancy, I really struggled with, like, not being held, being able to have alcohol anymore. Because obviously, like, alcohol was a part of my. A bigger part of my life. Before you have kids. Like, sure, I have a white girl. I always have a cocktail or whatever. I'll have a glass of wine. So I. I, like, actually felt that I was like, oh, wow, I can't drink anymore. This is kind of weird. Don't give a rip about drinking anymore. Like, do not care. Not worth it to me in a lot of ways. Like, fully. Don't miss it at all. What I miss now, third time around. Like, caffeine.
A
Yeah.
B
Being restricted on my caffeine. I feel.
A
I feel you feel.
B
I feel it. Did you feel it?
A
Yeah. That's hard.
B
Yeah, that's hard. It's just interesting how my life has changed. Like, I literally. I. And I felt not being able to drink alcohol my first pregnancy, and I'm like, no, I don't even. I don't care at all. But I do miss the caffeine.
D
I'm sorry.
A
You're almost there.
B
I know.
C
It's.
B
It's. It's actually crazy. I feel like normally when you search how many days you have until your due date, you're like, oh, my gosh, I still have so long to go. And I searched it the other day, and it was like 40 days until my due date, which is like, that's if I make it to the due date. Like, I'm packing my hospital bag this week.
A
No, I did agree, like, 70 feels right.
B
I was like, I'm at least 60 days out, and to hear 40 was jarring. I'm telling you, I'm like, I am packing my hospital bag this week.
A
Yeah, it sounds like you need to.
B
It's not a bad idea. It doesn't hurt.

A
Well, Liz, I think we should probably just get inside Hustle some.
B
Yeah, no, it's a really good one. So without further ado, let let's get inside Hustle Summer. Everyone meet Shannon by Glow. By Shannon.
A
Okay, we have our first side Hustle Summer and it is one of like the favorite people I've met of 2026 so far. And that is Glow by Shannon. Shannon hello. Thank you for joining us.
D
Thank you for having me. I'm so excited.
B
So Shannon has a what I guess a mobile spray tanning business. Is that what you call it? So I'm I met Shannon several weeks ago. My friend had her come over to do spray tan and I normally just like go in the booth and get a tan, which is like expensive and never very good. And my friend was like, hey, you just want to come over to my house and get sprayed? And I'm like, yes, I have booked you twice since then. Like, I'm like, I First of all, we all know like life can be solved. All the hardships in life can be Solved with, like, a good spray tan. But having the mobile spray tan come to my house is really has been such a game changer. So we wanted to have you on the podcast to tell us a little bit more about your business, how you got started, and if anyone is listening and might be interested in starting a mobile spray tan business, it sounds like it could be a pretty good idea. So will you just tell us a little bit about how you got started and what your day looks like in the spray tan world?
D
Yeah. So I have been getting spray tans since high school. Really? I'm a redhead, so I don't tan naturally. So I love spray tans and it's always something I've been passionate about, as silly as that sounds. And one of my sisters would always like, tell me, you should do that. I'm like, I never knew how, you know? And then one day, it was one of those weeks where I just needed something to feel better. And so I got a spray tan. I had nothing going on that week week. And I ended up being with my friends that weekend and we just started talking about it, about spray tans, and it just spiraled into me starting a business. And one of my friends had a mobile spray tanner come for her wedding, and I didn't even know that was a thing. So it finally seemed like, oh, I can do that. Like, I don't have to have a brick and mortar, you know, like, that was so overwhelming to me. I didn't have money to start that up. So learning that people did this mobile and I was like, oh, I can do that. Literally the next day, I bought everything I needed. I got an llc. It was very quick. And I think that's why it worked because I had no time to really think about it. I spray tanned like six of my friends when I started to practice. And then I was like, okay, I'm ready. And I just went full in and did it. So I do it most evenings. The startup cost really wasn't too bad. I think I probably spent maybe a thousand dollars in the beginning to get all of the equipment, all of the solutions, and different products that I use, and then started charging people from there. So it went pretty quick. But again, I'm so passionate about that it worked.
A
How did you start getting your first couple of clients?
D
Yeah, really? Word of mouth and social media. I feel like St. Louis is a very small, big city. Everyone knows everybody. And I would say now most of the people I spray, I don't know, but they know someone who knows someone who knows someone That I know. So that's been really great. It definitely was slower at, in the beginning. And I think one way is I do a lot of spray tan parties and so like one person knows who I am, they book it for their wedding, but then I'm spraying like 8 to 10 bridesmaids. And so from there everyone knows so many different people. So it's really mostly word of mouth.
B
So you offer. So you can either just come to someone's house and spray them, or you can also have a party, which is how I found you and how we've booked you in the past. What does the. What do you charge for like a single spray tan? And what do you charge for a party?
D
Yeah, So I charge $70 for a regular spray tan, 75 for the rapid spray tan, which means you can shower quicker. It's just a different solution and that costs more. And then for anyone that books a party with three or more people, everyone gets 15% off. And that's because it's worth my time to do more people at one location. And it's just an incentive for people to have more people.
B
So if someone wanted to start like this exact side hustle tomorrow, what would be like the first three steps you would recommend for them?
D
Yeah, I would definitely say buy a machine and a tent and get your friends and practice. And if it's something you don't enjoy or you think you know it's not going to work for you, it's always nice to have to do just for yourself and for your friends. You know, if it, it's not that big of a cost to just even have for yourself. So I think it's worth purchasing. And again, if it doesn't work out, you then have spray tans for you and your friends.
A
And you can like, you can make, you could make your money back even if you don't charge what you like. Yeah, you could make, you could charge 40 to your friends like for the solution, the investment, and you could make it back. And then if you're like, okay, I don't want to do this, like again, you still have it. And it kind of sounds like something I like a side hustle where it's like something you can pick up and put down as needed. So like you can decide how much you want to book, how busy you are. I mean, you say you have, you do Sprite because this is not your full time job. You have a job.
D
Correct.
A
So you know you're doing this like every evening and I'm sure weekends too. Like you sounds like, you're going pretty hard at it, but it would be easy for you to scale back if you felt like you needed to. Yeah.
D
You make your own schedule, which is really nice. And, yeah, you can do it as much as you want or as little as you want, and you can charge as little as you want or as much as you want in reason was there.
B
How does it feel to see people, like, just in their most vulnerable state? A lot of the times you're spraying people, like, in their underwear or naked.
D
Yeah. At first, I was really nervous about that, and I think it's helped that when I spray tanned in the past, like, before I had my own business, I spray tanned fully nude.
B
Yeah.
D
And so it made it more comfortable for me. I'm like. Because I knew that people already did that. And I will say my favorite compliment I ever get is how comfortable I make people feel. Yeah, I agree.
A
Very comfortable, vulnerable. Yeah.
D
Thank you. It is very vulnerable, and I understand that. And I. The reason I love spray tanning is the difference of how people are when they walk into my tent and when they walk out of my tent.
B
First of all, that's beautiful. 100.
A
That is beautiful. That is beautiful. And we actually, like, we are huge believers in, like, the importance of a spray tan for your mental health. I'm. I am being 100% stone cold serious when I say that. And we. We hired you to do spray tans for all of our team before the auto show. And I think most of those girls hadn't had spray tans since their weddings. Like, if ever, like, Liz and I are pretty active spray tanners. My team had such peps in their step the next day. Like, everyone was in such a good mood. I kept watching them, like, check themselves out. Like, every time we walked by a mirror, like, everyone was feeling themselves, don't you think?
D
Unstoppable spray tan.
B
I mean, like, I'm literally so pregnant, and then I get a spray tan, and I'm like, wow, I look, like, good. Like, am I three months pregnant? Like, and I. I don't know. Just everything looks better. Like, everything feels better. Like, yeah, I love, love getting the spray tan.
D
Yeah, it was. Confidence is unmatched, and I love being able to, like, give that to people because everyone is beautiful even without a spray tan. But the way it's like, yes, you're making your outside more, in a way, beautiful, but, like, it really is about how you feel on the inside, for sure. And you can't beat that. No.
C
100.
A
I do want to say, like, is 70 a lot for a spray tan? Yeah, it is. Well, it's not a lot for a spray. It's a lot of money to spend on that one. I like that you set your price and I think that, like, I, I like that you know your value. You're taking into account that, that you're coming to the people. And the spray tan was like, let's say a Palm beach spray tan is like 40 bucks. It was $30. Better for sure.
B
50 bucks. It's 50 bucks.
A
I didn't have to leave my house. It lasted longer.
D
It.
A
And if you're nervous. I also liked that it felt very like customized, you know, And I think, I think we did. You did lighter on our faces, which is also really nice because like then you put your makeup on your face so you don't have to like. It was just, it was, it was really a perfect spray tan.
D
Thank you.
A
No, no, no notes. I'm ready for you to come back.
B
To be honest with you, I know, like literally any opportunity. So, Shannon, what has been the biggest challenge in growing your business and how did you overcome it?
D
That's a great question. The biggest challenge. For me is like the marketing side of it. I never took a marketing class in college. I never took a business class in college. So my degree was in child development. So it's very different. So I sometimes struggle with like the business and marketing side just because it's so unknown to me and with working a full time job. Job. I don't have a lot of time.
A
Yeah, yeah.
D
I'm either working during the day or I'm working in the evenings. Spray tanning. I feel like I've done a decent job at social media and the marketing side of it and I think my product and like the spray tans speak for itself, thankfully. So that's nice. And again, that word of mouth is really the best referral. But sometimes I struggle with keeping up with the different marketing techniques and things that I see other people doing and like comparing. But I try to just do what I know.
B
Well, you've been successful. You've now you've hired another sprayer.
D
Yes.
B
That's huge.
D
Huge.
B
Congratulations. She came. She was one of the girls when you. You were unavailable, so she came and sprayed me. She did a wonderful job. So sounds like you're. You're doing a great job. And this is. I believe you would eventually like to take this to your full time thing, correct?
D
Yeah, I would, I would love to.

B
Shannon.
A
My business advice, like, for social media would be, like, double down on, like, be someone who's passionate about spray tans. Like, I just think don't apologize for that. Or, like, say, I know it sounds like. No, it doesn't. Like, people will really resonate with that.
D
Yeah, I know.
A
I love it, love it, love it.
B
I love the passion.
D
Yeah, me too. And it is bigger than I ever thought it would have been. And so I know it can go. It can keep going. It's hard to take that jump, to do it just solo, but.
B
Well, if you're in St. Louis and you want to book a spray tan, you can find Shannon on Instagram at Glow Glo by Shannon.

A
thought it was not a W.2. I don't know where we came up with that.
B
Why did we both think there wasn't a. Wow. Did I tag the wrong Glow by Shannon?
D
No.
B
Okay. Sorry. G, L, O, W. How it's spelled? Glow by Shannon. Just the way it sounds.
A
