And is Marco Rubio getting ready to be president of Cuba? We got some things to talk about here. Joel Berry is in the mix. He is managing editor of the Babylon Bee, which many of you love for its humorous takes on so many things. Great to have you on, man. First time. Appreciate you being here.
C
Yeah, thanks for having me, Buck. It's an honor.
A
What was, what was your sense of the. Of the State of the Union address aftermath? Because what I took from it was they were talking the next morning, CNN was talking about the Epstein files, which, which after a State of the Union address is kind of a weird thing. Unless they fel. They didn't really have much of a. Of a place to take a swing at it. What was your big takeaway?
C
Yeah, well, that's a great indication that the State of the Union went really well, isn't it? That CNN immediately wants to change the subject. I mean, trump the thing that is so funny about it to me is that Trump, he played the same trick on the Democrats that he played last year at last year's State of the Union where he would say something completely non controversial that 95% of Americans of sane human beings would and should agree with, like the American president should prioritize American citizens above illegal aliens or, you know, calling for justice for the murder of a Ukrainian immigrant. And just the, the optics of watching these Democrats just with just dour faces, arms crossed, sitting in their seats through it all was just awful for the Democrats. You know, except for John Fetterman. God, God bless John Fetterman. You know, he seems like an honest guy. He didn't, he didn't take Trump's bait, but, but the rest of the Democrats did. And it was, it was fun to watch. And it was an amazing speech too.
A
I love this, by the way, from the Babylon Bee. This was about Hillary Clinton, who today, as you and I are talking, was being grilled on Capitol Hill. And it says, politician on Epstein list grilled by other politicians on Epstein list. See, I find, I appreciate you guys are making, I'm making a joke around this now because, you know, people have, have gotten so tangled up in this mess with the whole Epstein situation. It's so many things, right? There's the, there's obviously the criminality and the horribleness and the, and the terrible things about, about Girl. And you know, no one's making any, any, any light of that or anything else. But you have these politicians now that are playing this, this like food fight game of. Well, your side, you know, your side has people who are mentioned, our side has people who are mentioned. Well, being mentioned doesn't necessarily mean much of anything. And it just feels like it's all so dishonest at this point. The way that people are just trying to use it as like mud to see if they can get it to stick to somebody else. Whether the person had anyone thinks they did anything actually bad in the Epstein orbit or not.
C
Yeah, well, it's, it's gross to see how it's kind of become a political football. The Democrats didn't care about it when Biden was in office. Suddenly they kind of took up this cause as if they're really, as if they really care for the victims and they really want justice for the victims. The files release was such a mess because there are so many names mentioned in it and people who never went to Epstein island, people who never interacted with Epstein. If your names are in the files, that can just be posted online, and it can create a whole thing. And so it's just a mess. What's frustrating, I think, for the average American is that we see politicians using it so that they can get their, you know, their little sound bites and clips and hearings or so that they can tweet about it or they can use it against their political enemy. We don't see anybody pursuing justice, you know, and that's. That's what Americans want. That's what Americans have been waiting for. We want to know that, you know, powerful people can still be held into account for horrific deeds done to the powerless in this country. And, you know, it's. It's disheartening to see that not, you know, we did see it in the uk. Prince Andrew was arrested. So that. That was nice to see. I guess we're waiting for. We'd like to see at least one arrest here in the United States.
A
Can I point out that Prince Andrew was arrested for something having nothing to do with actual, like, Epstein sexual activity? Right. I mean, this is. It's. It's like getting Capone on tap.
C
It was like the. Yeah, it was like the O.J. simpson thing, you know, where they, you know, he got off on murder, but they kind of. They got him for some other stuff, you know, later on.
A
Well, they got him later for stealing memorabilia. It was some crazy story. They got him on armed robbery for
C
a long time for that.
A
You know, he got like, 10 years, I think. But they got him on stealing memorabilia or something. Yeah, but. But this is what I mean. Like, they got, you know, they've arrested Andrew, but it's for, it's for sharing trade secrets. It is not. Anyway, so. So, yeah, that's, that's the arrest that they've made so far around all this stuff. So I understand the frustration of people who, to your point, want. Want to know there's still accountability, because if we live in a world where politicians can actually violate underage girls and systematically and over many years do this, and there is no punishment for that, it's like, Malik has already won and we were in a really, really bad place. But. So I understand people want to know that. But these politicians now, and particularly like Democrats, whenever Trump has a good day, I'll turn on the. I'll turn on, like, Ms. Now, formerly msnbc, and there'll be some story about, like, oh, do you know that on page 3705, like, there's a reference to Trump in the Epstein files? Okay, but what does that mean? Like, did he do anything no. Okay. But, you know, it's just used. I mean, you said it's political football. Yeah. It's just used as a weapon now. It has. No one's actually pursuing justice anymore, it seems on Capitol Hill.
C
Well, you know, I guess, you know, for anyone who pays attention to the media, pays attention to politics, I would recommend this for the next three years. You know, anytime you hear the media bringing up the Epstein files to go after Trump, try to figure out what they're covering up, because there's probably some good news, you know, on, on the Trump front, something he's accomplished that they're, that they're trying to gloss over. I mean, the thing about this is, you know, that we've, you know, the second Trump term is there's been so much good news he's accomplished so much that just nobody's hearing about because, because the media doesn't want to cover it. You really kind of have to dig and find for yourself. It's. But, but it's been an incredibly eventful first year for the President with all the things he's accomplished.
A
Yeah, I think it's been amazing. And you look at all of the actual verifiable or, you know, information data based wins and you're talking about the border being secure and you look at all these different economic metrics you can point to and Even the like $600 billion that tariffs brought in, which everyone said this is going to be catastrophic for the economy, it turns out it wasn't. So that's interesting. I think Trump had had an incredible first year. I want to come back and ask you about, just let's talk theories on this Cuba situation, which is really interesting to me, but also kind of, kind of way out in the open, I mean, or rather way out into, into the. Who knows what's going on. We'll get there in a second. Sponsor of the podcast today, Birch Gold Group. International disputes, Inflation, Rising debt. So there was a boat that was off the coast of Cuba. Here you go. Cuba says, oh, this is what, this is what I had. Actually, this is the latest on this one, by the way. We got an update from just the last few hours because I had theorized that they're going to say that it's some kind of like mini Bay of Pigs thing. And the question then becomes, is it or are they like, why would they say it if it wasn't? This is the latest in BBC. Cuba says group shot on US registered speedboat planned an armed infiltration. So Cuba has said 10 people aboard a US registered speedboat that had intercepted off the coast of Cuba was planning an infiltration with terrorist aims. Border guard shot dead, four people injured, another six, according to the Interior Ministry of. This is all from Cuba, to be clear. So, I mean, I'm not taking this as gospel at all, but the people were shot. I mean, you know, Rubio and the U.S. government and that, that's agreed on increased tensions between the, the, the two countries. I mean, this is right off of. If you look, I'm looking on a map, where this happened is basically the closest point between South Florida, where actually I am here, and Cuba is where this happens. If you were on a speedboat and you're like, I'm trying to get to Cuba as fast as possible, this is exactly where you would land. What do you think happened here, man? What's your take on it? You know, all theories. Welcome.
C
Well, you know, I, I'm not inclined to, to, you know, believe the story of the Cuban communist government, but I, I mean, it is kind of, if it is true, these guys sound to me like, you know, anti Communist freedom fighters, which makes them American heroes. Which means that maybe we should, you know, maybe we need to go to war with Cuba and, you know, topple that regime down there. It's. I think maybe it's time to do that.
A
It's funny with Clay, my co host on radio, he said, he's like, what are we. Why are we feeling like we need to dance around the fact that it would be better for everyone if the Cuban government fell and Cuban. And the Cuban people were free to pick their own leadership and have a real government. And, you know, why can't we just. Now I know that like Marco Rubio, Secretary of State will say stuff like this, but there's still this hesitancy and I think it comes from the American left actually wanting to, like, they have a. Look, they have a weird sympathy. It's not weird, because they're commies too. They have a sympathy for Cuba.
C
Yeah.
A
Like they want us to act like Cuba is just a nation like any other and should be treated, meaning the government should be treated as such. And it's been like a prison island for 60 something years now.
C
Yeah. If we were to, you know, pull a Maduro, so to speak, on the leader of Cuba and take that country over, you know, make it the 51st state, you would have the deepest, reddest, anti communist rock, ribbed, conservative based, right wing state in American history. You have a bunch of Cubans, we know how they are when they come over here, when they escape the country and when they come over here, those the most politically active America loving conservatives that you'll see. So I'm all for it. Why not Cuba? I mean, the war would be over in 30 minutes.
A
There we go. There we go. All right, man. Well, one thing I want to ask before we let you go. What's like the process for coming up with funny things for the Bee? I mean, I know you must read the news and prep. It's like you guys are running a news organization that makes, that has a lot of jokes and there's a lot of funny stuff. But is there anything else that, you know, being funny on command, I find one of the hardest. Like I do radio and we'll make jokes, but it's not like be funny, you know, it's like if there's a moment to make a joke, we'll throw it out there and we'll have some fun with it. What's your process in that?
C
Yeah, well, it is, it is. It is work. You know, it's not all fun and games. We do laugh a lot in our writers room. We have a shared slack where me and a bunch of other writers will. We kind of iterate and we riff on the news. It's really all about kind of shots on goal. You know, the more pitches that you have, the more likely you are to find something that's really funny. Then you can kind of riff and you can engineer and fine tune that headline to be just perfect. But you know, one thing that you realize as a comedy writer, the more you do this is that ideas are cheap. They're a dime a dozen. You just got to, you got to have as many ideas as you possibly can and solicit as many ideas as you possibly can. It's just, it's just shots on goal. And so that's, that's what we do. I wade through hundreds and hundreds of pitches for my writers. And we kind of, we narrow down from there. And it really is a fun way to look at the news. I mean, you know, the news is often dark and depressing and sad and frustrating. And when you're always having this mindset of, like, what's funny about this? It's really just a. It's a fun way to live, a fun way to look at the news. And we're, we're glad that we can kind of share that a little bit through our headlines with other people, kind of giving them a relief from, from the. Just the daily craziness.
