Welcome in hour number three. Clay Travis Buck Sexton Show. Appreciate all of you hanging out with us. Buck is off en route to the mountains and he'll be back with us on Monday and I will have the show with you for this hour and the next couple hours. You can weigh in 800-282-2882 as we will be discussing all of the issues of the day and beyond. We're joined now by the Governor of Texas, Greg Abbott. He has been in the midst of a big battle and Governor, I appreciate you joining us. Let's start with this, the redistricting that would potentially add five Republican seats has led to Democrats fleeing your state. Most of them, it appears, have gone to Illinois, which is among the most gerrymandered of all states. They have 14 Democrat seats, three Republican seats, despite the fact that President Trump got around 45% of the vote there in 2024. Of all the places they could have run, that seems like a really interesting choice to have made. What's the latest you can tell us about them potentially having to come back and do their jobs as elected legislator members?
Greg Abbott
Well, for one, you know, you just pointed out the hypocrisy of these Democrats. It's not just the hypocrisy of the Democrats in Texas. It's the hypocrisy of the Democrats in Illinois as well as across the entire country who are saying that Texas should not be doing this redistricting. When you look at Illinois, when you look at California, when you look at New York, when you look at Massachusetts, when you look at all the blue states, that is the epitome of, of gerrymandering what the Democrats have done and what Texas is doing. We're just trying to draw lines to allow voters to vote for the candidate of the choice. Easy example. And that in each of these five seats that we're going to add, Trump won those five seats. The candidate of choice is Donald Trump and a Republican. Democrats have a problem in Texas because they think they had a, quote, ownership right to Hispanic and black voters. And now it turned out that Hispanic voters and black voters are voting Republican, not Democrat. So they have all kinds of problems. But where we stand procedurally in all of this, and that is that I took action yesterday in a proceeding to vacate or remove from office the leader of this runaway renegade group of Democrats and filed a proceeding in the Texas Supreme Court. Texas Supreme Court immediately ordered the leader of the runaway Democrats, his name is Jean Wu, to file papers in the Supreme Court by Friday to respond to my allegations. Because we are seeking to remove him from office and hold these people accountable because we cannot conduct business in the state of Texas because they've broken a quorum. And so, for one, we're going to hold them accountable. For another, arrest warrants are out for all of them. And we're searching across the state of Texas to find out if there are any Democrats in the state of Texas. And if there are, we're going to be arresting them. And we will have Department of Public Safety officers working across the country to try to identify them. And know this Because I think the Democrats who are in illinois, New York, etc. Don't know this. And that is the FBI is out looking for them also. So we're going to track them down and get them back. But the last point is this. This is total futility by the Democrats. They've tried this before, multiple times since I've been governor. And what happens is a special session in Texas, last 30 days and they eventually have to come back and when they come back they'll be arrested since at the Capitol. And we're going to get past what was on the agenda just like we have every other time.
Jamie Rubin
Why do you think they're doing this? Like, let's pretend that you were not the governor of Texas trying to enact a law as you were elected to do. And instead you were trying to just sit out there and you're looking at this and you're saying what is their game plan here? You just laid out why it's not going to work. What do you think they are thinking they are gaining from this?
Greg Abbott
I don't think that they are thinking, to be honest.
Jamie Rubin
That's a good, that's a good answer by the way.
Greg Abbott
The reality is they're losing bad from this. And we've seen it happen before. I'll tell you what's happened in the past and why it's gonna be repeated again. And that is everyone listening to this show, every, every average Texan in the state of Texas, that's a show up for work. And if they don't show up for us, I'm going to boycott today. I'm going to break quorum, I'm not going to go do my job. I'm going to leave and go to Illinois. They'd be fired. And so what these Democrats are doing, they're angering the average Texas voter, the swing voter, if you would, who thinks, well, they got to go to work. But these rogue Democrats don't have to go to work. And then to make this even more impactful against these Democrats, I called a special session which lasts 30 days and I put 18 items on that session, the first of which were four items. To deal with the tragic floods that took place in central Texas, where we lost more than 100 Texans. They lost their life because of that flood. And we need remedies such as warning systems, other strategies for rivers and flooding. We need laws passed that will protect the lives of Texans in the future. And the reason why those laws are not being passed, the reason why the resources are not being provided to the fellow Texans who need those resources is because Democrats are holed up in Chicago and New York and leftist states across the country.
Jamie Rubin
We're talking to the governor of Texas, Greg Abbott. One of the things that I think is a huge part of this story that isn't being talked about enough and I'd like to get your reaction to this is one reason you can redraw congressional maps and redraw lines is because of the surge in Hispanic support for Republicans across the state of Texas. Some people out there on the left are saying, oh, this is racist. What it actually represents is the majority of Hispanics in Texas voted for Donald Trump. They're now voting for you, they are voting Republican. And it has fundamentally altered the map, including in particular down along the border in South Texas. For people who may not know what has happened. What has the data shown about Hispanic voters, men in particular, but also a lot of women flooding in to support Republicans?
Greg Abbott
Well, all you had to do was take a look at the map of Texas on the night of the presidential election and saw all of the counties on the border that Donald Trump won that have been blue for more than 100 years and they were read under Donald Trump. But Clay, get this very important fact because this just obliterates any claim of racism. Let me tell you what these maps do. Four of the new districts we are creating are predominant Hispanic districts. And so it just turns out they're Hispanic Republicans. But this is these are going to be Hispanic districts and we preserve the Barbara Jordan district. And Houston, Barbara Jordan was a well known black member of Congress for a long time and her district had been broken apart. And we're putting it back together. We're restoring that district. And so any allegations about race playing a role adverse to Democrats here is nothing but just an outright lie.
Jamie Rubin
Are you concerned at all you can make the right decision for Texas? I'm sure you've heard Gavin Newsom say, well, if this happens, we're going to do that in California and Kathy Hochul in New York. The governor's there. I'm sure you know those guys and gals well. And JB Pritzker even said maybe we'll take away some. Are you concerned about other states responding to Texas and how would you respond to governors there making those threats?
Greg Abbott
Well, let's walk through that. For one. Those states are so gerrymandered, it's hard to pick up any more seats. I think I saw in the map of Illinois of all the members of Congress, there are only three Republican seats left. And it's so gerrymandered. I don't think they could rig it any more than they have right now in California. If I understand the facts correctly, Gavin Newsom is trying to place, I think, a constitutional amendment on the ballot that would allow them to take action. The point being that unlike in Texas, he, as governor, he doesn't have the unilateral authority to call for redistricting in Texas. We do. We don't have a commission here like they do in California. And so bottom line is this. They have. The Democrats have hurdles that may not be able to be cleared in order for them to be able to do any of their own redistricting.
Jamie Rubin
What should we know? You mentioned that one of the reasons you're having this special legislative session was what happened with the flooding. What should this audience, both in Texas and certainly outside of Texas, know about the latest there and how things are going to be handled when it comes to that response?
Greg Abbott
So with regard to what happened in the Kerrville area as well as many other areas in the state that got ravaged by flooding and where we lost so many lives, first, in the Kerrville area, we are still missing two people. I want everyone to know that we continue and will continue the search for the two people who remain missing. And we will be deploying new strategies to make sure that we're using every tool possible to find everybody who is missing. Second, after a disaster like this, there are several steps that have to be taken, and they're all being taken. One is to clean up the debris. The other is to begin the rebuilding process. Because of the generosity of so many of our fellow Texans and Americans, there is a lot of money available. We're going to start working to immediately rebuild homes and get people back with a roof over their head. It could be rebuilding it from scratch. It could be making repairs to it. In that area, there were a lot of RV homes and those are being provided by Samaritan's Purse. And so we have so many organizations like that in addition to the resources the state has. But then in addition to that, we want to make sure that the state is passing laws and providing resources to make sure events like this don't happen again.
Jamie Rubin
We're talking to the governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, much less significant. So we talked to redistricting, the battle there. We talked, obviously, the fl, all of that. The Texas Longhorns are number one in the country and open the season on the road at Ohio State in about, I think, four weeks from when we're talking right now. Are the Longhorns the Best team in the country.
Greg Abbott
So I think the Longhorns have the best defense in the country, a lot of returners, and at every position, whether defensive ends in the country, the best linebacking core, the best defensive backfield. So their defense, which I think was ranked something like number third in the nation last year, is going to be very stout, very hard to score upon on offense. You know, there's a lot of new faces on the offensive line at quarterback. Obviously it's going to be the big debut of Arch Manning. And because the offensive line players, they played a lot of snapshots and because Arch himself was able to play a lot of snaps, they have a sense of what to do. That said, as you know, if you go into the Ohio State Stadium and play a game there, it kind of doesn't matter who you are, that's a tough game. I will remind you of this, however, the last time that the University of Texas Longhorns played at the Shoe at Ohio State, they won. They defeated Ohio State led by quarterback Vince Young. And we have a transformational quarterback like that in Arch Manning this year. And I think he's going to be able to go there, lead them to victory once again against an Ohio State team that itself is having to go through a rebuilding year.
Jamie Rubin
No doubt, Governor, feel free. Come on. Anytime. We're different times of the year. Number one in Austin, number one in Houston, highly rated all over your state. So we appreciate everybody out there listening in the Lone Star State. Good luck to the Longhorns and only about four weeks till football season gets rolling.
Greg Abbott
Take care. Always great to visit with you. Thanks so much, Clay.
Jamie Rubin
Appreciate that. Governor of Texas, Greg Abbott. You guys can react to that. 800-282-2882. We will continue to roll. We'll get some of your talk backs and some of your calls as well. But for those of you out there, maybe you got elderly parents, grandparents, they, they don't use cell phones. Well, how about Rapid Radios? Maybe you got like I do, a young kid, I got a 10 year old out there. You know what? He loves old school Rapid Radios. We let him run around with it. We use it for football. I was just talking about the Texas Ohio State game. Sometimes you go on the road for football games. The whole cell phone networks, it feels get overloaded. You ever try to download tickets on your phone? Now you know how frustrating that can be. The WI fi networks get overwhelmed. So cell phone networks. But you know what happens? Inevitably there's always like one person who says, oh, I got full bars I got no issue at all. And you want, you're you're trying to figure out how does that person able to send text messages, how are they able to make a call? What Rapid Radios does, it's really remarkable is they use the entire cell phone network. So it doesn't matter what you are signed up for. This is a non tech right. So you're not using it for text messages, you're not using it for the Internet. You just pick it up and you talk old school. Like when we were kids we had those GI Joe walkie talkies. We'd be in two different cars talking back and forth. This is like that except way better nationwide. It works everywhere. Why not use this as a backup for your cell phones or to use in the event of catastrophe because these things last for five days or maybe, maybe you're like me and you live in a place where sometimes you don't get great reception on your cell phone itself and you want to be able to stay in touch with your family. Welcome back in Clay Travis Buck Sexton Show. Appreciate all of you hanging out with us. Producer Ally just shared with me we are sitting at 99750 current subscribers on YouTube. So go knock us over a hundred thousand. And we have added right at nearly 2423,000 subscribers in the last couple of weeks since I've been telling you guys to please go subscribe. I am optimistic that come January you will be able to get all three hours of the radio program on video at YouTube. So again, that is not up now. Right now is just clips. But as we have been doing the deep dive on the data, it's wild to me. I never would have believed this is true. But more people watch and listen now to podcasts on YouTube than actually listen to audio only. This is one of those things I never would have gotten right. It's hard to predict where media is going. If you had told me five years ago, hey podcasts are going to be big, I would have said, yeah, that makes sense. People are traveling, they've got their phones, they want to be able to get shows all over the place, no matter where they are. Yeah, I get that. That makes sense. We should be available on podcasts because this show used to with Rush not be available by and large on podcast. So we have built that over the last five years, four years and change. Buck and I have. I would have never believed that audio show video would be more popular than audio in podcasts, but that's where we are. So we want to have a big base knock us over 100,000 right now. You can get select clips from the show right now, but starting in January, I am optimistic that you're going to be able to watch all three hours of the show as I'm waving you right now on video and on the video version of the program. And this is going to be a big growth area for the show as well. So we appreciate all of you for being good supporters of the program and we want to be on all places because different ages consume media different ways. We want to be on podcast video and we want certainly all 555 stations to be listening. We'll do some talkbacks. I'll take some of your calls when we come back. But in the meantime, I want to tell you get hooked up right now with chalk if you don't have energy. Buck is off for the next couple of days. He is on the road headed for the mountains. He'll be back with me on Monday. I've got you guys Thursday and Friday. A lot of people want to weigh in for a variety of different commentary of what we have been discussing so far. And thank you for sending us, by the way, over a hundred thousand instantly as soon as I asked for that. Would like for you guys to continue to sign up. But Rob from West Palm says KK has got a concern about the show being available for three hours on radio every day. Let's listen.
Greg Abbott
Are you sure you guys want to put all three hours of your show on YouTube so that everyone can actually see you guys? Especially with your homeless beard and your so snazzy jackets. I don't know man, you might want to think that over.
Jamie Rubin
Look, I appreciate that. Always love to hear positive feedback about my appearance. I. So first of all, I'll be doing the show in T shirts most days. Just prepare for that. You can already see it on the YouTube channel. But I will say when I did sports talk radio I did not want to be on early in the morning because I think you should judge us for what we say, not for how we look while what we. While we are speaking.
Greg Abbott
Right.
Jamie Rubin
Television is primarily a cosmetic thing. Most people put on makeup. I don't, Buck doesn't. But you have entire makeup apparatus. It's like a sort of stylized play in many ways here. I love the radio, but yeah, I was not that excited about being on radio early in the morning because I don't take a shower. I'm. I was on live at 5am Central for three hours solo and I wasn't that excited. I mean I'm, you know, getting three or four hours of sleep. I'm sure that I looked ridiculous and my hair is not combed very well. So I wasn't that excited about, about being able to, to get hooked up on that. So this one, again, I'm not claiming that you're going to be blown away by physical appearance, but you will be able to watch it. And I just think it's important to be available everywhere because there's so many different ways now that people are consuming products on a day to day basis. And I think, I think all that factors in. By the way, let's hit some more of these talkbacks. I love the talkback function. Brian and Worcester Mass has this to say.
Buck Sexton
He's DD just on the subject of the Democrats and just the party of bitterness and hating beauty. We used to read about this stuff in school. I mean Kurt Vonnegut story, Harrison Bergeron, you know, George Orwell, 1984, you know, repeat the lie. Two plus two equals five. We used to be, have to. We used to be forced to read these books in high school as like cautionary tales and now it's like this is the Democrat world, the liberal world, and, and you know, nobody understands it.
Jamie Rubin
I think the challenge that we're in is it's very, I mean, where did Mark Twain say a lie? Can somebody look up? You can get halfway around the world before you even put your pants on. And that's a paraphrase of a famous Mark Twain line. I think it's never been more true. And I would argue that it's not even just lies. It is selective contextualization. And let me explain what I mean by that and why I think this ties in with video and long form listenership and things like that. I think people are willing to consider context. I think, in fact, most people crave context. Because in your own life, if you only took one sentence out of a conversation, or in your own life, if you only took one text message out of a context thread, how much would it change the way that you understood it? And I always say, and I'm very, very aggressive in arguing this, even with our own social team, and they've heard me say it over and over again, include the question. When we put up an answer, always include the question. Because what we ask impacts the way that the answer is given. And when you just pull a random answer out, it doesn't contextualize anything. And so I think one reason why long form has grown in popularity, heck, why a lot of you listen to all three hours on podcast, and why people watch it on video and is they want the full context of conversation. There's a desperate craving for actual complexity. And it often is not served in the sound bite era in which we live. And so I think that, I think that factors in here in a huge wave. A lot of you weighing in. By the way, yesterday we're saying, hey, we try to be honest with you guys, we're not going to get everything right. In fact, sometimes we get things wrong. And I said if I were pointing to something that I said I thought would happen that I was completely wrong on, I thought we would get a 20, 22 red wave. Those of you who were listening a couple of years ago, you remember me predicting it. We did it now. We got it in New York, we got it in Florida, we didn't get it nationwide. We got it enough to flip the House back to Republican control in 22, but we did not get it enough to also have flipped the Senate. And there were a lot of close governor races and Senate races, and that did not go the direction that we had hoped they might. This is let's see podcast listener Robin from Texas cc. Here's her talk back. Listen.
Listener
Hey, Clan Buck Robin from Texas here. I keep hearing you guys be down on yourself for the big miss on the supposed red wave in 22. And I'm going to give you some grace here. There was a lot of redistricting after the 20 census and it affected the 22 election in ways that you both couldn't have foreseen, which caused all this gerrymandering that went on. I think you guys do a great job and I love this show so, so much.
Jamie Rubin
Well, that's super nice and but I do think it's important we get things wrong to come on and say, boy, screwed that up. And I do believe that what you hit on, though, is very important. And I talked about this a little bit. We were talking with the governor of Texas, Greg Abbott at the top of this hour and all of a sudden Democrats have decided they don't like redistricting. That's because they've redistricted all their states already. They did it earlier after the 2020 census, which actually had a lot of errors in it. And if you read the New York Times, which I do, so you don't have to, they actually did a deep dive on this and they said, hey, things are actually slanted in favor of Democrats right now in 22 and 24, both of which were Republican House majorities but very small Republican House majorities. The nationwide vote totals were not reflected in the House. Democrats did better because they gerrymandered more effectively than Republicans did. And you say, okay, what do you mean by that? Data wise, Clay, nationwide, if you just count all of the different House seats, there are 435 of them and you put all those votes in, Republicans won each of the last two election cycles by around two plus points nationwide. If that were extrapolated into the 435 representatives, Republicans would have had bigger majorities in 22 and 24 than Republicans actually ended up with. So Democrats have more effectively gerrymandered than Republicans have, such that the actual nationwide popular vote, which is reflected in some way in the House, has actually over advantaged Democrats compared to Republicans. And that doesn't even consider the biggest over advantage of Democrats, which is they count illegal immigrants for purposes of House seating and the census, which benefits Democrats in a substantial way. So they're getting angry now that Texas is doing what Illinois has already done and what New York has already done and what California has already done. I even saw the Democrat governor of Massachusetts, Healy, I believe is her name. She said, well, if Texas is going to do this, we're going to have to gerrymander more. And every seat is already gerrymandered so that there are no Republican congressmen or women from Massachusetts. So there's a lot of these governors that are claiming to be upset. JB Pritzker is a good example. Democrats already have a 14 to 3 advantage in his state. It's one of the most gerrymandered states in the entire nation. California. Gavin Newsom's crew has already drastically gerrymandered the state of California such that the percentage of Republican vote is actually lower. Now, to be fair, this also happens in red states in general. If you control a state, you are setting it up so that you end up with more congressmen, women than would otherwise occur. My home state of Tennessee, there are nine congressional seats. Eight of them are held by Republicans. Trump won the state of Tennessee something like 30 points. Wasn't remotely close, but there are still, in the state of Tennessee, around 35% of people that vote Democrat. They're actually underrepresented in the state of Tennessee because the state is so overwhelmingly red. My point on this is Democrats have actually been better, according to the New York Times, at gerrymandering than Republicans have. And what they're upset about is 2026 is expected to be a very close race in the House again, and it may come down to two or three seats, as it has the past few years. So if Texas adds five, that puts the finger and the scale a little bit more into favor of the Republican Party. They really need to go back and look at counting illegal immigrants in for purposes of congressional seats. And they also really need to go back and address a larger issue at play here, which is they totally screwed up the 2020 seats census. And as a result, Democrats ended up with more congressional seats in their states via the Electoral College map than they otherwise should have. And it's like nobody is even willing to talk about that or have deep discussion about it. Okay, I'll take some of your calls and we will read more emails, more talk backs. I appreciate all of you when we return. In the meantime, I trust my kids to be able to be in touch with them because we have pure talk phones for both of them. 17 year old, they're about to go back to school. He has got all sorts of extracurricular activities. 14 year old, it's football season. He's playing football now. Practice. Different times, scrimmages, different times, locations for games all over the place. If you're like me and you've got kids and you are running all over the place. The 10 year old plays soccer and flag football. My boys have more extracurricular activities than we ever did when I was a kid. They're everywhere. I trust Pure Talk to stay in touch with my 17 and my 14 year old and it saves me a bundle in the process. You can trust Pure Talk to stay in touch with your family and also save you up to a thousand dollars over the course of a year. You can keep your same phone number. Welcome back in Clay Travis Buck Sexton show. Appreciate all of you hanging out with us. I don't know if you heard me last night with our good friend and Sean Hannity who will be on in many of these stations in about 10 minutes. Yeah, last night he had a brilliant idea and I give him credit for this. He said on the show, hey, I don't understand why Bud Light wouldn't just sign Sydney Sweeney. And I just, I mean, it is brilliant. I think overnight Bud Light could reverse the anti male universe that they created when they put in place the Dylan Mulvaney trans influencer ad. If they just put Sydney Sweeney in a tank top and gave her a bottle of beer to hold and said, hey, you know what? I loved when beer companies had pretty girls and everybody wanted to watch football and kick their feet up and, and enjoy a beer. I think overnight the brand would change. I'm not kidding. I mean, I think one of the, the negatives is you can destroy your brand overnight. I think one of the positives is if you just have a little bit of success, you can immediately flip everything in a good direction. We got a bunch of things. Keep me updated on the emails, guys. Lorenzo wrote in love the show. Will Clay ever try to get Dodger Dogs as a sponsor again? Look, I love la. It is a fabulous city. Maybe the most overrated thing in all of Los Angeles is a Dodger Dog. It's a hot dog and it's not even a Very good hot dog. And back when I did my sports talk show, they played an April Fool's prank on me where they said that we now had a huge new sponsor and it was Dodger Dogs. And I had to pretend that I love Dodger Dogs because they were spending millions of dollars on the show. And so I was like, well, you know, I previously said they were awful, but I've got him in a tough spot here, guys. So they April Fools me into believing that Dodger Dogs was now the presenting sponsor of my sports talk radio show. That was a tough one because let me tell you, Dodger Dogs are awful and not even as good as normal hot dogs. I apologize to Dodger fans out there. Jeff in Greenville, North Carolina. What you got for us, Jeff?
Greg Abbott
Yes, sir. Hey, how's it going? First time caller, long time listener. You guys do a fantastic job. I do miss Rush, though.
Jamie Rubin
We all do.
Greg Abbott
Is there a. Is there a possible way that if they do go forward with AI that they somehow can watermark it so that, you know.
Jamie Rubin
Thanks for the call. I don't know exactly what he's talking about. I mean, AI is going to be super confusing because what they can already do, and we have a lot of fun with this, is they can make me look like I'm playing flutes. If you're on social media, they can make me look like I'm swimming from Alcatraz. You guys are really, really funny about it. But videos are starting to take over, and I'm being honest about this. I think within a year, Certainly by the 2028 presidential election, they will have any candidate running for any office saying the most awful things imaginable in an effort to try to go viral and destroy the legitimacy of a candidacy. I'm just telling you, it's all coming. So I don't know how you fix that. By the way, a couple of different talkbacks. Yolanda, I understand Miami Beach. She's going after Joanna yesterday. Cut.
Greg Abbott
Aa.
Jamie Rubin
Hi, guys. I love your show.
Greg Abbott
This is Yolanda from Miami beach.
Jamie Rubin
And my name is spelled with a J.
Christiane Amanpour
But pronounce Yolanda because.
Jamie Rubin
Because that's the way we're spelling Italy. I totally get that. The woman in Texas who compared the Holocaust to Texas trying to redistrict. Her name is J, O, L, A, N, D, A. And it is pronounced. It is pronounced Jo Landa most of the time, like you. It's just a different pronunciation for Yolanda. I don't claim to understand it. Craig in North Carolina. What you got? Craig play Frank in North Carolina. Your most recent outkick was off the charts.
Greg Abbott
Good.
Jamie Rubin
We really need to get behind the Free Delbert movement. Can you produce T shirts that say Free Delbert Carver? Proceeds can be donated to the Delbert Carver Defense Fund. God bless y'.
Greg Abbott
All.
Jamie Rubin
Delbert Carver was arrested in Atlanta. You know, they haven't managed to arrest the Dobbs leaker. They haven't managed to arrest anybody for the so called pipe bomb or whatever it was on January 6th. We haven't arrested anybody for Russia collusion on the left side. Nobody has paid really for the lineup against Trump, but they arrested a guy for throwing a sex toy, a green sex toy on the court during a WNBA game. There now have been three of these. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, you can look it up. It is a prank that is currently being played out and the guy who was arrested was named Delbert Carver and I have pledged to get him the best legal defense team on the planet. We got a free Delbert. I appreciate all you will have some fun Thursday, Friday on the program, Buck is headed to the mountains with his family to get away a little bit at the summer break. I appreciate all of you. Thanks for sending us over 100,000 on the YouTube channel. Keep subscribing. See y' all tomorrow.

Podcast Summary: The Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show – Hour 3: TX Gov. Greg Abbott
Release Date: August 6, 2025
Host/Author: iHeartPodcasts
Guests: Governor Greg Abbott of Texas
In the third hour of their show, Clay Travis and Jamie Rubin welcome Governor Greg Abbott of Texas to discuss pressing political and social issues affecting the state. This episode delves into the contentious redistricting efforts in Texas, the shifting political landscape among Hispanic voters, and the state's handling of recent natural disasters.
Jamie Rubin opens the discussion by addressing the recent redistricting effort in Texas, which aims to add five Republican seats. He highlights the Democratic exodus to states like Illinois and questions the Republicans' strategy:
"The redistricting that would potentially add five Republican seats has led to Democrats fleeing your state... What’s the latest you can tell us about them potentially having to come back and do their jobs as elected legislators?" [02:05]
Governor Greg Abbott responds by drawing parallels between Texas and traditionally gerrymandered blue states, asserting that both leverage redistricting to reflect voter preferences:
"When you look at Illinois, California, New York... that is the epitome of gerrymandering what the Democrats have done and what Texas is doing." [03:22]
Abbott emphasizes that the added districts align with areas where former President Trump secured significant support, indicating a strategic alignment with Republican voters:
"In each of these five seats that we're going to add, Trump won those five seats." [03:22]
He further criticizes Democratic tactics, suggesting hypocrisy and alleging that Democrats now face consequences for their redistricting strategies:
"We're seeking to remove him from office and hold these people accountable because we cannot conduct business in the state of Texas because they've broken a quorum." [03:22]
Governor Abbott details the procedural steps Texas is taking to address Democratic actions deemed obstructive, including legal proceedings to vacate Democratic leadership and the issuance of arrest warrants:
"We're going to track them down and get them back... This is total futility by the Democrats." [03:22]
He outlines a robust response involving state and federal law enforcement to ensure Democratic legislators comply with their duties:
"The FBI is out looking for them also." [03:22]
When Jamie Rubin probes into the Democrats' possible motivations for their redistricting challenges, Governor Abbott remains skeptical of any strategic foresight on their part:
"I don't think that they are thinking, to be honest." [06:26]
Abbott argues that Democrats are inadvertently alienating average Texas voters by prioritizing partisan games over pragmatic governance, leading to voter frustration:
"These rogue Democrats don't have to go to work... They are angering the average Texas voter." [06:30]
Rubin shifts the conversation to the significant increase in Hispanic support for Republicans in Texas, a factor enabling successful redistricting. He addresses accusations of racism by highlighting data showing substantial support for Republican candidates among Hispanic voters:
"What has the data shown about Hispanic voters... their majority are voting Republican." [08:07]
Governor Abbott counters allegations of racial motivations by emphasizing that the new districts are predominantly Hispanic and align with genuine voter preferences:
"Four of the new districts we are creating are predominant Hispanic districts... the reason why these laws are not being passed is because Democrats are holed up in Chicago and New York." [09:00-10:06]
He underscores the accuracy of Texas's approach in reflecting the actual voting behavior of its Hispanic population:
"Any allegations about race playing a role adverse to Democrats here is nothing but just an outright lie." [10:06]
Rubin inquires about potential reactions from other states with strong Democratic control, such as California and New York. Governor Abbott argues that these states are already highly gerrymandered, limiting the effectiveness of additional redistricting:
"Illinois has only three Republican seats left... Gavin Newsom is trying to place, I think, a constitutional amendment on the ballot." [10:31]
Abbott suggests that unlike Texas, other states may face challenges in implementing similar redistricting efforts due to existing political structures and legal hurdles:
"They have hurdles that may not be able to be cleared in order for them to be able to do any of their own redistricting." [10:31]
Shifting focus, Rubin asks about Texas's response to the devastating floods in central Texas, which resulted in significant loss of life. Governor Abbott outlines the state's comprehensive strategy for disaster recovery:
"We continue and will continue the search for the two people who remain missing... begin the rebuilding process." [11:42]
He highlights immediate actions such as debris cleanup, home rebuilding, and collaboration with organizations like Samaritan's Purse to support affected communities:
"We have so many organizations like that in addition to the resources the state has." [11:42]
Abbott also stresses the importance of legislative measures to prevent future disasters, emphasizing proactive governance:
"We want to make sure that the state is passing laws and providing resources to make sure events like this don't happen again." [11:42]
In a lighter segment, Rubin shifts to discuss the Texas Longhorns' upcoming football season. Governor Abbott offers enthusiastic support for the team, praising their defensive strength and the anticipated debut of quarterback Arch Manning:
"The Longhorns have the best defense in the country... arch Manning this year." [13:36]
Abbott expresses confidence in the team's ability to perform well against Ohio State, recalling their previous victory and expecting another strong showing:
"Arch Manning this year... lead them to victory once again against an Ohio State team that itself is having to go through a rebuilding year." [13:36]
Throughout the episode, Clay Travis and Jamie Rubin engage with listener calls and feedback, addressing concerns and providing updates on the show's developments, such as expanding their YouTube presence and encouraging audience interaction via calls and emails.
Governor Abbott participates interactively, responding to both scripted questions and spontaneous listener comments, reinforcing the show's commitment to audience engagement.
Redistricting as a Strategic Advantage: Texas's redistricting efforts reflect a strategic alignment with Republican voters, particularly among Hispanic communities, challenging Democratic dominance in traditionally blue states.
Democratic Accountability: Governor Abbott's administration is taking legal steps to hold Democratic legislators accountable for perceived obstructionist tactics, emphasizing rule of law and procedural integrity.
Hispanic Voter Shift: A notable increase in Hispanic support for Republicans in Texas is reshaping the political landscape, dispelling allegations of racial motivations behind redistricting.
Disaster Response: Texas is actively addressing the aftermath of severe flooding through coordinated efforts in cleanup, rebuilding, and legislative measures to mitigate future disasters.
Civic Engagement: The episode highlights the importance of listener engagement and the evolving nature of media consumption, with a growing emphasis on video and long-form content to provide comprehensive context and foster informed discussions.
