Mary Katharine Ham
We are back on. Normally, the show is normal. It takes. But when the news gets weird. I am Mary Kathryn Hamm.
Carol Markowitz
I'm Carol Markovitz. How are you, Mary Kathryn?
Mary Katharine Ham
I'm all right. You know, busy spring weekend, Lots going on, and we're cruising into spring break.
Carol Markowitz
I mean, cruising is definitely one way to describe it.
Mary Katharine Ham
We're trying.
Carol Markowitz
We had our middle son's bar mitzvah this weekend. It was raucous time.
Mary Katharine Ham
Yes, definitely. I can tell. I'm sad we missed it. I know.
Carol Markowitz
It was funny. Yep, Yep. My. My younger son. I don't know, he's sort of fascinated with you recently. He's like. He's constantly like, is my friend Mary Catherine gonna be there? Like my friend Mary Katherine. Hey, so, yeah, you gotta. You gotta come to his. Because you're gonna be in his montage. I have this great picture of you and him at defara's when he was a baby. And you're, like, looking over at him and smiling, and That's a classic. 2029. Be ready.
Mary Katharine Ham
That was the time that I, like, a VIP, stumbled into Defara's Pizza in, like, four minutes.
Carol Markowitz
Yep. When the.
Mary Katharine Ham
When.
Carol Markowitz
When Dom DeMarco was alive and making the pizza. And it would usually be hours. And she just walked in and was like. Like, this is hard.
Mary Katharine Ham
Carol was like, please don't get the idea that this is normal. This is not normal.
Carol Markowitz
Yes, yes, it was auspicious day. Anyway, you were missed and you should come to his. So we will see you in 2029.
Mary Katharine Ham
Got it. I'm putting it on the calendar. I have nothing planned for that year. So here we go.
Carol Markowitz
All right. Well, I'll tell you that my friends who traveled to Florida for the party and the service had miserable times at the airport. And a lot of them are, you know, like, just normie people who are like, who did this to our airports? Why is this happening? And I didn't have time to, like, really break it down. So I just sent them a link to our episodes about it being like, the Democrats are refusing to fund the DHS because they want to stop funding for ice, which is already funded in the big, beautiful bill. That's it. Yeah.
Mary Katharine Ham
That's the basics, my friends. And now, to make things more complicated, past the basics, they, of course, have come to a different impasse. Now I will briefly explain. So this started with Democrats in the Senate using their only minority power to filibuster a deal that would have just funded DHS that had come out of the House. They were like, no, we don't want to fund DHS because it funds ICE and Border Patrol. And there is, like, a tiny bit of funding for support staff, the exact kind of federal workers, by the way, that everybody had those signs in their yard for. But whatever, they don't want to fund those guys now. So a bunch of TSA workers and a bunch of support staff have been unpaid for several paychecks. Now, for the second time in six months, due to this, at some point late last week, Senator Thune, who's the head of the GOP in the Senate, made a deal that passed at like 2am on a voice vote in the Senate that would fund everything except for this little sliver of ICE and Border Patrol that was cut out. That was the story. It goes back over to the House and the Republicans, had they passed it in the House, like, the funding would have moved forward for tsa. That didn't happen. Mike Johnson, head of the Republicans in the House, was like, I don't like this bill. I don't like that you passed it in the middle of the night. I don't like that it's coming over here when y' all already have bill from us that you could have passed. And Thune and the Senate left town, leaving this with the House. Now, Scalise, also a GOP leader in the House, Steve Scalise of Louisiana, says that some of those senators over there are having buyer's remorse because it turns out there's more than meets the eye to the ICE and Border Patrol funding in this bill and that some of it may have been cut more than they intended and that perhaps that won't work. So what the House did. I know we're getting in the weeds here, but so, you know.
Carol Markowitz
Oh, it's important to understand. Yeah.
Mary Katharine Ham
The House passed another stopgap measure for eight months, for eight weeks to send it back over to the Senate. And the Senate has to decide if they want to pass that one. So that's where we are right now.
Carol Markowitz
Right.
Mary Katharine Ham
I thought maybe the problem would be solved by this weekend. And by the way, stop doing all this on the weekend while Carol and I got stuff to do.
Carol Markowitz
Yeah. We got places to go.
Mary Katharine Ham
Like, come on.
Carol Markowitz
It's funny because everybody was inconvenient. So like, even if you got to the airport hours in advance ready for this line and then you got through the security somehow in five minutes, because that also happened to people, then you have three hours and 55 minutes at the airport. It's, it's really crazy. And look, the Democrats are all over the place like, so Donald Trump might sign an executive order to get funding to the TSA agents. Now Democrats online are like, if you could have done this the whole time, why didn't he? Meanwhile, they're marching with the no Kings protest and they don't want him to
Mary Katharine Ham
do stuff to have power.
Carol Markowitz
Right. But yet they're like, oh, he should have done this the whole time. And then other Democrats are saying that they're going to sue him to not do this because they don't want the TSA agents paid and they want to continue this. So it's like, what do you guys want? And US Senator Elisa Slotkin was on Bill Maher and she said, look, the average person just wants bad word there to work. I don't give a blank if you're a Republican, a Democrat and independent. Just live in the zone of practicality and the far right and the far left live in a different universe, which are all really nice sentiments. But as our friend Guy Benson points out, she voted repeatedly to shut down DHS for over a month and sustained the shutdown on the literal day of a homeland terrorist attack in her state. Like, these people are not serious.
Mary Katharine Ham
It was when the thing passed the Senate this past week. It was at that point a 42 day shutdown. And essentially what Democrats have gotten out of that 40 plus day shutdown is an unintentional reduction in force of the TSA because a bunch of agents have just Left right now, remember, like I said, this is the kind of thing, reduction in forces. What? They've been fighting Donald Trump over the entirety of his presidency and now they're like, nah, just let them walk because we're not going to pay them. There's no process involved. There's no. Sorry. They don't seem concerned about it at all. And I don't know, I'm sort of of the mind that the House probably could have taken an R win on this by passing it and then doing reconciliation for whatever else they needed. But if there's other squirrely stuff in there, I want to be wary of that and sympathetic to that argument.
Carol Markowitz
I mean, there's also the fact that Democrats should pay politically for this, but the Republicans are just incapable of getting that message out. Like, I think you and I have done a better job than elected Democrats who get paid for this kind of thing to explain what is going on and why. I just think Republicans need to get a lot more serious on messaging. It's really, really, really important to let the American people know what's going on.
Mary Katharine Ham
One thing I will say is a bit of a PR coup coup when you see it, is the ICE agents serving people in the TSA lines, because they are, like, have been uniformly kind in somewhere like LaGuardia, where I think they were almost entirely in charge. That line was moving this weekend like crazy. And so I think some of that is helpful to piercing the other incorrect ideas that many people have been given about ice. And I have seen reporters repeatedly asking flyers like, how do you feel about this? Expecting them to be upset. And they're like, oh, it seems fine to me.
Carol Markowitz
Right.
Mary Katharine Ham
There's actually one flyer, specifically a traveler from your homeland, Carol.
Carol Markowitz
My homeland of Brooklyn? Yep.
Mary Katharine Ham
That's a perfect answer to this. Let's play a little bit of his no drama take on the TSA being taken over by ice. Oh, they're right there.
Carol Markowitz
All right.
Mary Katharine Ham
They're good.
CarMax/Public Ads
They're here to help. They're not bothering nobody.
Mary Katharine Ham
As long as they can check my bags and get me on my flight,
Carol Markowitz
I'm good to go.
Mary Katharine Ham
Right? I want to get. I want to get to the Bahamas. I want out of here.
Carol Markowitz
He's just awesome. He just wants to go to the Bahamas. I feel him. I mean, people are going on vacation. It's spring break weeks. And again, the Democrats being not held responsible for this in our media is just a typical travesty of the way the reporting game works. They're there to protect their team, and that's what they're doing. Yeah, yeah. In other news, our other big stories going on, an update on Iran. There's really actually not that much to update. Iran basically said absolutely not to Trump's proposed peace deal. And they've been continuing to block the Strait of Hormuz. They're threatening to fully close the strait if we keep attacking. Meanwhile, we are moving more potential ground troops into the region. I still think it's a bluff. You know what, I hope it's a bluff. But the thing is, if it continues to be bluff after bluff, then they're going to catch on to that. So what I like is that they just don't know what Donald Trump is going to do. The COVID of the Post today was like, donald Trump will blow up Iran if they don't stop blocking the Strait of Hormuz. And it's just, you know, you don't know is he gonna do that or is he gonna just say, forget it, you know, this war's over. It could go any way that Donald Trump wants to go.
Mary Katharine Ham
Well, yeah, and I think there's some, again, the treatment of this conflict, I do feel like it's like the old days when I was at cnn and I had to put everything in context because they would strategically forget everything that happened 15 minutes before. I'd be like, hey, let's compare this for context to times that similar things have happened in the past. They'd be like, no, we don't want to do that. We just want to freak out over Trump. And so I do think in a four week engagement like this, it is important to contextualize that the operational and strategic victories are very large here. And that compared to something like even Desert Storm, which is hailed as an extremely successful campaign, one sided campaign in 1991, there's been fewer aircraft lost by far, fewer troops, I believe lost by far. And so those things are important and should be part of the conversation. And we don't know what Iran will do ultimately and whether the Straits of Hormuz actions they're taking or the random potshots they're taking, unfortunately, some of them damaging to surrounding countries and people who serve or live there. We don't know whether that's just desperation or if they have something up their sleeve. But it seems very much like significant damage has been done to the apparatus inside this really threatening country, which would then possibly give the people of that country at some point the ability to maybe take the reins in some way to take to the streets.
Carol Markowitz
And that's what we're hoping for. Right. We're hoping for Iranians to go back to the streets to rise up and take power from these mullahs. There's only so much that America and Israel can do and obviously the long term goal has to be for Iran to govern itself. We're not looking for any kind of, you know, puppet government being installed or anything like that. It's, it's really, it really has to be the Iranian people doing it for themselves.
Mary Katharine Ham
We will keep you updated as we know more but right. We will do keep an eye on defense specialists and war specialists who actually get into the operational stuff going on here because I do think that's important instead of just the risk assessment. Risks are a part of every war and it's important to discuss that, but it's also important to contextualize the actual things that are happening with our very competent military.
Carol Markowitz
That's right. We're going to take a short break and come right back with more on Normally

Mary Katharine Ham
All right, we are back on normally with a pretty heavy subject so just be prepared. I do want to talk about the death of Sheridan Gorman who was a Loyola University student in Chicago living her life, having a good time. She's a freshman, 18, shot and killed while she was with a group of friends at a Rogers park Pier on March 19th. 25 year old Jose Medina Medina, the suspect in her death, is an illegal immigrant who the Department of Homeland Security says entered the country in 2023 and was apprehended and then released into the US under the Biden administration. Tragic death of this young woman. As usual, it took days and days for the Democrats in Illinois and in charge of her city to acknowledge that this horrible thing had happened, much less to reach out to her family. And her family has been very straightforward about their thoughts on this, which is, please don't try to gaslight us and tell us this wasn't preventable. Don't tell us she was in the wrong place at the wrong time. She was in a place that students hang out all the time. Don't tell us that she did something wrong. By the way, one Chicago alder woman said on video, maybe she startled the migrant who shot her. Like it's nothing.
Carol Markowitz
I mean, come on.
Mary Katharine Ham
Yeah, it is nothing but excuses on behalf of the accused murderer, the cold blooded murderer, and then ignoring this poor woman and her family because this is a result of sanctuary city policies and they know it.
Carol Markowitz
Right? And that's the thing. They can't say anything like this. They have to continually pretend that every single situation like this is a fluke and that almost never happens. And even though we keep having problems like this, it's a continual lie that, oh, this is so super, super, super rare. And the thing is that, like, we don't get the stories and we don't get the news because they want to cover it up. And that leads to another problem, that it's not that rare. And our media is cover that is not that rare and is lying to the people.
Mary Katharine Ham
Well, and as, as her parents point out, each of these deaths at the hands of an illegal immigrant, particularly ones who have been arrested several times. This one was for minor offenses. But this is the thing. If you don't send the guy home, he has to escalate, right? And he escalated to killing this woman. Sanctuary cities cause this issue and every single one is preventable. If you send the person home, you cannot deny that part of it. And the Loyola student newspaper, in one of the more grotesque displays ever apologized for calling Jose Medina Medina an illegal immigrant, which is just a fact about his status. But their ideological fealty requires them to play defense for this guy, to, to genuflect to the terms that are nicest to him. One of their peers was murdered and their concern in the school newspaper is how to be as nice as possible to the guy who murdered her.
Carol Markowitz
Right. It feels like we're in the upside down. It's like it's just a ridiculous thing to do and it's, you know, I like, why be nice to a murderer? It just makes no sense. I have to add Governor Pritzker of Illinois basically blamed Donald Trump, said that it was federal immigration policy gaps, real failures in the system. But he, you know, interpreted it as, he also said it was a leadership problem and it sounded like he was talking about Donald Trump. It just also completely makes no sense
Mary Katharine Ham
that you're the leader.
Carol Markowitz
Yeah, you're the guy.
Mary Katharine Ham
We have another Democrat governor who is without perspective on this. Abigail Spanberger in Virginia was asked about a similar case. Stephanie Minter, a 41 year old mother in northern Virginia was murdered at a bus stop, stabbed by someone who had been arrested 30 times, many of them violent offenses and let off because we have a Soros funded prosecutor. I'm not being a right wing hack, he just is. He's just one of those guys who does decides not to prosecute anyone for their violent crimes, particularly if they're illegal immigrants because he doesn't want to flag anything to ICE. And so this guy had gotten through the system 30 times, he murders this woman. Abigail Spanberger, our Democratic governor was asked about this on the trail by Nick Minoc, the only reporter apparently in Virginia. Here he is catching up with her and here's her answer to him.
CarMax/Public Ads
Welcome to Cole Pepper. Governor, what is your message to Stephanie Minter's family? Cole Theepper, what is your message to Stephanie Minter's family and children who have been harmed by illegal immigrants?
Mary Katharine Ham
Governor, my question would be why, when
Cindy Crawford
there was a detention and deportation order,
Mary Katharine Ham
ICE did not deport them.
CarMax/Public Ads
ICE had him in custody for 700 days, Governor.
Carol Markowitz
Thank you, sir.
CarMax/Public Ads
And an immigration judge would not allow him to be deported to Sierra Leone.
Mary Katharine Ham
It's quite a display of ignorance and gaslighting and sociopath behavior. I just, this is an innocent woman who was murdered by this man. She doesn't take one second to just say I'm really sad that this constituent in her family suffered this fate and I am doing all I can to keep people safe. Even if that's not true, just say the thing and then there's no sentiment of that. It's just turn it back on Trump and ice, which is inaccurate because these sanctuary cities and sanctuary states make it impossible for ICE to deport the people that they've detained because they won't honor the detainer.
Carol Markowitz
Right, right. I love the blaming ICE for this because you want ICE to be over, right? You're in the end. Ice camp. So how could you have it both ways?
Mary Katharine Ham
Yeah, One more story on this front. Actually two more stories on this front real quick because they've been collecting in my brain and I just want to note in New York City, Alvin Bragg, another famous prosecutor who amazingly, could cobble together some unique legal justification for prosecuting Donald Trump, but can't figure out how to do this one, which is an illegal immigrant trans identifying person who followed a 14 year old young man into a bodega, into the bathroom in the bodega, sexually assaulted him. He has pled to that. But the plea deal is six months.
Carol Markowitz
Yep. I had sexualized in the New York Post. So he didn't even, he's not even gonna serve six months. He already, he's getting time served. Right? Time served. And it remains to be seen whether he gets deported. I mean, he's supposed to be deported, but you know, New York again is, doesn't, doesn't really run that way. So we'll see what happens with that. But it's just like how, like how do you hear that somebody raped a child, you know, in a bodega bathroom and think that six months is okay? And it's like, oh, they didn't want to put the, the child through testifying and this is what they came up with. I'm sorry, you could still not put the child through testifying and give this person six years. You can give them 10 years, you can give them 15 years. You could still make a deal. I, I, I don't understand how the deal has to be time served. That just makes no sense.
Mary Katharine Ham
One last one. There is a memorial for the slain Ukrainian refugee arena in Charlotte that has become, quote, a political lightning rod.
Carol Markowitz
Yeah.
Mary Katharine Ham
And Mayor Brett Smiley is now calling for the artwork's removal. And I just want to point out how perverse this is because in this town and with Democrats, they tell you what, they tell you ride public transportation. That's really important. They refuse to keep public transportation saf because they will not incarcerate or deport people for fear of doing it to people of color and undocumented status. Then they make fun of you if you say you want safe transport because that's racist. But then an innocent is killed in cold blood on the transport. And they're like, we're not going to talk about her because that's inconvenient to us. And then if you paint a mural of said woman, they will come down on you for painting the mural and honoring her. Meanwhile, they will put out statements, making excuses for the man who killed her like I am. It sounds like I'm making it up, Carol.
Carol Markowitz
Right, right. I have to add one more that sounds like we're making it up. Representative Pramila Jayapal from Washington is pushing for. You're not going to believe this. Reparations for illegal immigrants traumatized by ice. Like we have to play this clip. This is so crazy that you have to hear the clip because you won't believe it otherwise.
Cindy Crawford
We also need offensive actions around prosecutions. We need real accountability because at the end of the day, the people that
Mary Katharine Ham
have been inflicting this harm need to be prosecuted. They need to be brought before us and they need to be held account for the trauma that they have created.
Cindy Crawford
And we are going to have to
Mary Katharine Ham
have some form of reparation for the
Cindy Crawford
kids and the families that have been traumatized through all of this.
Carol Markowitz
So yeah, that's literally what is going on here. Yeah.
Mary Katharine Ham
Just a quick correction for myself that Mayor Brett Smiley was in Providence, Ron island where they were trying to do a tribute to this woman. Not in Charlotte. The incident happened in Charlotte. The mural is in Rhode Island.
Carol Markowitz
I think the Democrats would be held accountable for caring more about illegal immigrants than Americans. But they're not. They won't be and they won't be punished for any of this.
Mary Katharine Ham
We have to do the punishing at the ballot box and that's really the
Carol Markowitz
only way it goes.
Mary Katharine Ham
Yeah, it's the only way it happens because it ain't going to happen in the media. But people do notice eventually and even when they're telling you, no, no, no, we don't care about that more. I think you do.
Carol Markowitz

We are back on normally where over the weekend, there were no kings protests in many cities. Apparently across all 50 states, the number is at around 8 million, according to the organizers, which, of course, you need to take with a giant grain of salt. There were a lot of people arrested because these rallies are not actually entirely peaceful. There were. Somebody was caught. Graffiti, kill your local ice agent. That. That went viral, that video. I don't know if that person has been arrested yet. They were in a mask at the time. And so these protests are going on. It's obviously a show of anti Trumpism, which, look, I mean, go ahead, protest all you want. I never understand how no kings is what they decided on here. It makes no sense for all the things that they could have said about Donald Trump. Saying that just is so baffling to me. He's not a king. And we're all like, yeah, he's not a king. Totally. Well, you're actually absolutely right on that.
Mary Katharine Ham
And they're not against a strong executive as long as d. That's fine with them. By the way, one person was particularly confused about it. This is a man who in this video has, like, a complete orange face and a crown on his head. And then he's asked to contend with why Kamala was anointed as maybe a king might be. Here he is. Would you like JD Vance to be the president?
Cindy Crawford
No, I would not.
Mary Katharine Ham
Okay.
Cindy Crawford
Yeah, I would not.
Mary Katharine Ham
Okay. Who would you like to be the president? Kamala Harris right now.
Carol Markowitz
But she didn't win.
Mary Katharine Ham
But can I point out something that we say no kings and no authoritarianism. But Kamala Harris, no one voted for her. Yes, they did.
CarMax/Public Ads
Half the country voted for her.
Mary Katharine Ham
So let's not go there. No one was voted for her to be the nominee. Yes, I did.
Carol Markowitz
Isn't that what, like, authoritarian.
CarMax/Public Ads
You're going down the wrong road right now with me.
Mary Katharine Ham
I wouldn't go any further.
Carol Markowitz
What. What does that mean?
Mary Katharine Ham
I'm not gonna talk anymore. That's what it means. I just think it's ironic that no one voted for her to be the nominee.
Carol Markowitz
They just selected her.
Mary Katharine Ham
Like a king gets selected.
Carol Markowitz
Right?
Mary Katharine Ham
Keep it to yourself. Okay.
Carol Markowitz
Bye.
Mary Katharine Ham
Have a good day. See ya.
Carol Markowitz
What'd your Other sign say, oh, you
Mary Katharine Ham
don't need to see it. Okay. Any business.
Carol Markowitz
You sound totally well.
Mary Katharine Ham
Yes. Yes.
Carol Markowitz
There was also a sign, her opinion about there. That nobody voted for her to be the nominee. That's her opinion. That's actually a fact.
Mary Katharine Ham
There was a sign in my hometown that said something like, give them France 1789. It's like the French Revolution. Do you know anything about that? We've got one more clip also from New York City. Just for the darker side of this. The silly people who don't know why they're protesting. Fine. And haven't thought through any of this. Whatever this is New York City. And here's the chant there. Working class revolution. Working class revolution. Solution. There is only one solution.
Coldwater Creek
Communist revolution. Communist revolution.
Mary Katharine Ham
There is only one solution.
Carol Markowitz
There is only one solution.
Mary Katharine Ham
Communist revolution. Yeah. Communism is going to win, baby.
Carol Markowitz
Communism's gonna win, baby.
Mary Katharine Ham
I like how they tried. They tried to resist and made it a working class revolution in the first chant. They're like, nah, I mean, we're carrying the hammer and sickle anyway. Let's just go all in. Yeah.
Carol Markowitz
Look, at least they're being honest. You know, I think a lot of the Democrats who support this kind of thing are not honest, that this is actually the end result that a lot of people are looking for. It's baffling to me that a system that has failed every time it's been tried just keeps getting pushed on us and on people all over the world as if it's like something that, you know, maybe we just try it one more time. Maybe they. They just didn't do it right. Like we're gonna do it. Right.
Mary Katharine Ham
And here's the actual theory, right? Is that Hassan Piker, famous lefty streamer, is down in Cuba telling us that America's the problem with Cuba. Well, what's the. What's the logical conclusion here is that America ceases to exist, and then communism can work perfectly, Carol. That's all we have to do is just. And then they're like. They're like. But I'm very patriotic, obviously, right?
Carol Markowitz
Obviously. I care a lot about America. I just want it to be more like a failed society, like these societies.
Mary Katharine Ham
Yes.
Carol Markowitz
Yeah. You know, an interesting side note to this is Bernie Sanders had a tax the rich rally over the weekend, and Zoramdani didn't go. Which is sort of fascinating because I think that. Could it be that Zoran Mamdani is catching on to the fact that he needs the wealthy to stay in New York to pay for all the nonsense he wants to pay for. I mean, I don't know that he's having this awakening, but if you're watching California and you're seeing these billionaires and even multimillionaires who wouldn't even be targeted by the proposal, but they know how it all ends up. If you see them bolt for the door and you're looking at your own tax base and you're hearing what Governor Hochul said about all the people that moved to Palm beach and she lost this, like, you know, tax base that is completely cratered. Could it be zurmamdani's like, I want all this free stuff, but I need the rich people to pay for it and I need them not to leave.
Mary Katharine Ham
We'll see. I mean, he occasionally seems more tied to realism than other people in this coalition by virtue of the fact that, for instance, he knows how to suck up to Donald Trump and thinks that might get him something. He's correct about that. So maybe he has thought this through. But generally the socialists don't understand that wealth comes from anywhere.
Carol Markowitz
They're just like, yeah, right, money tree in the backyard.
Mary Katharine Ham
Oh, that money tree has killed a lot of people over the years because it doesn't exist.
Carol Markowitz
Yep, yep. Just constantly watered by, you know, the
Mary Katharine Ham
blood of people who believed in it.

The tone is direct, occasionally sarcastic, indignant at perceived political hypocrisy, and often colored with dark humor and banter between the hosts. They criticize both parties—though with particular focus on Democrats—and repeatedly stress what they view as media bias, practical consequences of political standoffs, and misplaced priorities in governance and activism.
This episode provides a rapid-fire, highly opinionated take on the DHS shutdown and its effects on airports, linking federal chaos to daily travel frustrations. It moves to foreign policy, casting the Iran confrontation as mishandled and under-contextualized by the press. The conversation quickly turns to the fallout of sanctuary city policies amid highly publicized violent crimes, with the hosts expressing outrage over what they see as official indifference and media cover-ups. They wrap by highlighting and mocking the contradictions and excesses of the current protest movements, especially among far-left participants longing for a “communist revolution.” The message: chaos at every level, with frustrated “normie” Americans caught in the crossfire.
