It is nice to be in a place where a bunch of people, one of you know, the leader of which is, like, quite ideologically committed to the free market, was like, this will solve our near, like, our hyperinflation problems and make the economy better and give us businesses and prosperity. And then they do it. It's. Oh, that's what happened. Like, it worked.

Yeah, it's great. And I love to see it. Feel like I could not eat steak for a while because we had some amazing, amazing steak.

One thing, can I say that's interesting about the hyperinflation thing, which you don't experience if you've never been in that kind of economy. A lot of things in Argentina, the prices are on a QR code or done by letter or color code because during a time of hyperinflation, they had to raise prices so frequently that it didn't make sense to price things. And that is a whole different world.

That's right. Yeah. Doing the math. Math was hard there, but they're getting better. Everything is improving, and it's good to see it.

All right. You know, we've had some politics happen in our absence. Our last recorded episode was before the Thomas Massie vote. He, of course, has lost, and he's taking it super well and not at all freaking out on social media and spiraling. So, yeah, that happened. And then, of course, last night, as we're recording this, John Cornyn lost to Ken Paxton for the primary race in Texas. And so Ken Paxton was running against James Talarico, who I think people have very mixed opinions on because I keep seeing online things like Republicans are very worried about James Talarico. And then I hear him talk or see him and I'm like, are they, are they worried about this?

Well, it. Texas is a white whale for Democrats. Right. They, they did used to win statewide when they were sane a couple decades ago. They don't anymore. And while like Ken Paxton is a flawed candidate there, there's many, both professional and domestic ethical issues with him and legal ones as well. But he did the thing that works in this era, which is he went after the right people and he signaled to people that he was fighting on their behalf. Cornyn was an establishment Republican in the Senate who I like and I think importantly is kind of a donor whisperer in Texas. And it'll be interesting to see when this race costs a ton more money than it might have cost if Cornyn had run because Jackson is more vulnerable where that money comes from because it might come from Trump PAC versus Texas donors. We'll see. They might just like cough up the same amount of money regardless. But Paxton is vulnerable. However, if you put on the other side Democrat who is on tape saying every single 2020 insane thing.

And he is, he is also extremely vulnerable.

So for people listening on audio, obviously this is Texas. There's a lot of American flags and really good looking brisket and at the end it's Ken Paxton and Donald Trump. And of course all the clips of telo are far left insanity. And it is going to be interesting to see whether the fact that Democrats pick this guy, pick Telorico because they want to seem more normal and he seems kind of normal and he's a self professed Christian and they think of him as an everyman and then you have these comments by him, and it'll be interesting to see whether Democrats can get that gap between who they think he is and who he actually is to be a bit closer.

Yeah, look, I don't think that standing in the back of a pickup truck and wearing a Texas flag shirt is enough to overcome what we just heard. Right. And I think there is a lot of truth to the fact that Democrats in consultant circles look at Beto o' Rourke and he's like an even more JV Beto o'. Rourke.

Look at these two and go. That's. That's what people think is normal. Right. He goes to church. I heard that people go to church. That's right. He's doing that. That must be normal.

They don't really know. Yeah, but.

And actually, what. What's interesting about Talarico is that they're in a bind because they do need people who know what church is. Right. They do need people of faith. But in order to be a lefty of faith who rises in these weird consultant classes with the weird base, you have to be a Christian who has said, or a person of faith who has said over and over again that conveniently enough, your faith actually compels you to do all the insane lefty things that the lefties like. And then they're like, oh, my gosh, Christianity is great. Look, look at this Christian who says he's agrees with us on all of these things. So he uses the Bible to justify abortion. He uses the Bible to talk about trans kids and those policies. And I think many Christians, of which there are tons in Texas, look at that kind of thing as particularly off putting. Like, you're not bringing me in. I feel like I'm being pushed away.

Yeah, that's. That's it. Our friend Ryan Graduski, who also has a show on the Clay and Buck podcast network, had this to say about whether Republicans will vote for Paxton and whether other Democrats, despite what they're saying, oh, we think Tal Rico is an easy win. Whether they will actually support him with their money.

Do Republicans in Texas have to worry. Do they have to worry that their Senate is going to. Their Senate is going to go blue for the first time in decades? A big question comes down to money. I want to address the money issue first. Talarico is raising a lot of it. The Democrat raised $27 million in the last quarter. That's more than Paxton has raised total. And. And Talarico is going into this election with $10 million cash on hand. That's not a small amount of money. It is more likely than not that Talarico is basically on his own in this election. Democrats nationally are looking at protecting their incumbents in places like Georgia and picking up. They think Maine, North Carolina, Ohio, Alaska and Iowa are much easier chances to pick up wins than Texas. Texas down on the list action has trailed or been tied in most of the polls in the last few months. However, most are within the margin of error, so he's not that far behind. This was also true of ted Cruz in 2018, when he won by only two points. According to the most recent poll by the Texas Southern University, it has the race tied. That poll also found that 90% of corn voters say they're voting for Paxton. In the general, only 2% say they plan on voting for Talarico. So the idea that Republicans won't vote for Paxton, but they'll only vote for Cornyn, it's just not true. Paxton is doing very poorly among two key demographic groups that went in Trump's favor in 2024. Among Latinos, Paxton's down 18 points among Latinos. In Texas, Trump won Latinos by 10 points. So it's a tremendous 28 point swing against Republicans. The other group Paxton's struggling with are independents. He's down 25 points on average in these polls among independents. Despite these awful numbers, Paxton is still in the margin of error. Because one thing is really working in Paxton's favor Among undecided people who say they're not sure who they're voting for, more of them lean Republican or are Republican now than lean Democrat, meaning there is room for Paxton to grow among his own base. The good thing for Paxton is, is that Greg Abbott, the governor who's also running for reelection, is doing much better among those key demographics than Paxton is. There is a chance that Abbott's name on the ballot may help out Paxton kind of narrow those margins.

Kudoski is so good at breaking down those numbers. But I think that the thing that we're being told online is that corn and voters just won't go for PACs, and the numbers kind of don't show that. They might be mad. It's only, you know, the day after the election. But it doesn't mean that they won't line up with Paxton.

Mary Kathryn Hamm
Yeah, no, I, I think largely people will end up coming home. And this is sort of a, a symbol for all of American politics right now, which is, look, if you give people who are inclined to agree with PAXTON on like, 80% of issues.

Yeah.

Mary Kathryn Hamm
A flawed Candidate who they believe is like, I don't like a lot of things about him. I don't like how he went after Cornyn. And they're hesitant if they look over on the other side, right. They see James Talarico who like lists the things he loves and first thing among them is the trans children that came to fight for themselves at the Capitol or something like that's a weird first thing to list. They go, maybe I can just pull the lever like that. This is what it's happening. I would also say Patrick Raffini, who's good at crunching these numbers and this is from a while ago, but it's worth considering. He says a worst case scenario for Texas Republicans is a reverse Jay Jones, who was the terrible AG in who said he was going to be trying to kill his opponent's children and whatnot or would like to watch them die, is a reverse J. Jones, where the electorate shifts left and the GOP is on the wrong side of a candidate quality problem. Assume the November electorate shifts 6 points left, Trump plus 14 to Trump plus 8 and Paxton has Jones's 6 point underperformance. Paxton still wins by 2. So they like. It's a much more difficult environment for a Democrat. And you know, there are going to be pitfalls here. First and foremost, the fact that because Cornyn and he went after themselves, each other so hard, the, the Democratic Senatorial Committee, I believe, put out a tweet today that was like we were going to put out all the things wrong with Ken Paxton, but the NRSC already did it for us, which is the Republican Senate who had done, you know, who had put out facts about Paxton during the primary. So.

Well, we'll see what happens. Look, I, anything is possible. States change. You know, I, I used to think of Virginia as Democrats white whale. I used to think that that was, you know, largely impossible. But of course it's, you know, I

hate to say, look, it's a white whale until you catch it and then you're like, oh, you know, so it can happen. Like Republicans should always steel themselves. You should always run a race as if you are really competing with this person. Yeah. And especially with independence like Paxton is branded in a way that's going to be tough to bring a lot of them to him. And Abbott may need to be the messenger on any of that.

That deeply, emotionally affected me. And I left it on the mic. That's great because it served the story. People will say like, oh, my God, I cried at the end. It's like, yeah, dude, me too.

We are back on normally where a kind of throwaway comment by Stephen Bartlett of the very popular podcast Diary of a CEO, talking about how when he has a couple of glasses of wine, it really messes him up and he doesn't drink really anymore has really caused a lot of controversy on the old Internet. Let's roll that clip.

It's one of those areas where you don't understand the hidden cost until you really give it up for a while. And I think about my own relationship with drinking. And I stopped drinking at 30 years old. I'm now 33. And I had just drank because I just drank. I'd never ran the experiment of just giving it up for a while. And I. And then, like, I don't know, maybe I was at 31. I thought, you know, I'll have a drink again because now I could really a b test it. I had a year of not drinking, decided to have a drink again. It ruined three days of my life. I had a couple of glasses of wine, didn't get drunk. It ruined three days of my life because of the. The domino effect it caused. So it meant that I got worse sleep that night. And then because I got worse sleep that night, I ate more poorly the next day because my. My dopamine system or whatever, the cortisol system was all messed up. And then I podcasted worse. I didn't go to the gym the day after that day or the day after because of that, because I felt really bad. I then slept worse. And I could track all of this on my whip. Hashtag, hashtag sponsor, hashtag investor, whatever.

And I was like, oh, my God. Those three glasses of wine had this hidden domino effect that I must have been living with for My whole life too.

The thing is, I don't entirely disagree with him. I've talked about this on the show before. I would like to drink more. I simply cannot. I literally, like, I have one drink. If I have two drinks, it's my maximum. And if I have any more than two, I really don't feel great the next day. I don't have a woot or anything to track my sleep. I just, you know, I, I do it the old fashioned way. I just don't feel well and I know it.

And I, I, Something tells me I don't feel good. But it's not my watch.

Yeah, right, right. It's, it's something inside. But the thing is that having a couple of glasses of wine or a couple of drinks with your friends, there's things about it that have positives that don't get addressed here by the metrics on your wrist. It's, you know, you have, you're hanging out with your friends and you have a couple of drinks and things get looser and things get funnier and you're laughing more and you're having fun conversations and all of that is what makes life enjoyable. Like, it's okay to like that.

Yeah, I'm with you that I'm cautious about this kind of thing because, like, yes, it will, your sleep won't be as good. You'll be sort of tired the next day. The idea that it's ruining three days of your life.

Right. Yeah, we're keeping it up here. But like a lot of people pointed out, obviously he's selling the whoop bracelet that gives you all these metrics. And presumably, I guess because this went viral, this would be a great ad for this. Except it does not convince me at all to wear.

reason, like, I actually my. One of my overarching opinions about our modern prosperity and the way we live is that optimization is bad. Actually optimizing every corner of your life and having all those metrics and feeling pressured by them actually doesn't make you enjoy life more. I understand that whatever you measure, you can improve in. So, like, there are. But you should keep that to a small number of things.

Absolutely.

It should not be everything because I find that the least optimized areas of my life and the least planned areas of my life end up being the most rewarding in the moment.

And I think that wearing a bracelet like that and getting all this feedback is likely to put you into a negative food feedback loop. As soon as you have the couple of glasses of wine when you would have forgotten the bad effects, you're like 12 hours, you're not bothering me.

You're like podcasting still off. Like you wouldn't even know that. I think you've set yourself up for that. But there are so many areas of life where this is the case. Whether it's tracking your kids grades,

sports, like all the things that we optimize, optimize, optimize now. And we lost the 90s 80s thing where you just kind of doing it. Yeah, like the doing it was better and fun.

The other example of this that we have today is from Brian Johnson. He is an entrepreneur and he's famously a biohacker who's like trying to live forever. He's trying to reverse his body's aging process. He's also gotten into some really odd stuff on Again X where he talks about his girlfriend's. Sorry guys. Vagina. And how it's in the top 1% of all vaginas. So he's a little bit into his metrics.

I mean, in a way that is very sweet.

So I actually have a weird take on this, which is that the, the, the basis of that was that he was investigating her endometriosis. So she has an actual medical.

Yep, yep. He tweets out. Modern life has tricked us into thinking travel is good. It's kind of barbaric for the body. And then he goes into like all the data, like 9 days for blood glucose stability, 9 days to re entrain my circadian rhythm, 18 days for sleep. Sleep architecture recovery. It's just like, what? And he's like, last time I went to Asia, we measured my biomarkers and I'm just like, last time I went to Asia, we measured how many dumplings I ate. And that was super fun. Yeah. And it was a lot of dumplings.

I. I can't understand how you do anything. When you're measuring, this is it's actually a little bit like Covid response, right? If you're only measuring the negatives, of course this will seem like a bad idea. I wanted to shout out again, I do it every now and then. But one of my favorite pieces ever, which was in Reason magazine by Peter Suderman called what Old Time Saloons Tell Us about the Pandemic's Damage. He compared post prohibition numbers of patents with during prohibition numbers of patents. And there are studies that show basically that drinking together and making these connections creates innovation in society. Not just fun, but actual advancements.

I mean, I have a lot of good ideas when I'm drunk.

So many good ideas. But if you're only measuring the negatives of going out and having drinks with your friends, of course it seems bad. There are negative effects, but it's a trade off, right?

But there's places in this book that deeply, emotionally affected me and I left it on the mic. That's great because it served the story. People will say like, oh my God, I cried at the end. It's like, yeah, dude, me too.

All right, guys, we are back on normally with some comedy news and it ain't that funny. So there was a roast of Kevin Hart, a famous comedian, which featured all the famous comedians. And it seems like somewhere along the way several of the comedians forgotten what roasts are for because we've now had almost a week of coverage of mean jokes from a roast because they are too objectionable, Carol. Too objectionable.

Yeah, it's wild. So it's funny because there was a Charlie Kirk joke at this roast. Pete Davidson actually delivered it, and nobody on the right has really gone on and on about it. I mean, maybe there were people who criticized it at the time, but I haven't seen either. And it's very possible that the left remains humorless.

Kevin Hart knows all these comedians. He knows what they're going to do. I actually looked up the Hinchcliffe joke because I was like, people sure are making a big deal about this. And it was basically like, you've made the black community so proud. George Floyd is looking down on all of us, laughing so hard he can't breathe. It is edgy. It is mean. It is like, it is a roast joke by Tony Hinchcliffe. Right, Right. And, like, if you don't. If you're not willing to let that be a nasty joke, then how do you allow the rest of the nasty jokes? It's, again, a roast. This is the definition of the thing.

joke, it wasn't a tasteful joke to our culture, to our audience, but our audience that's watching the roast. If you're watching the roast, you get why they're doing it. You get why the racial humor is on the table. Like, it's not. I wasn't shocked. Like, that's what they do. Go look at the Tom Brady one. Like, that's what they do. It happens every year when they do a roast. It's not new. This isn't a new. It's not a new agenda. It's not a new approach to comedy. Do you feel like Tony Hinchcliffe went too far when he made that joke about George Floyd? It's Tony Hinchcliffe. Yeah. Like, I don't. Like, I don't expect less. I don't expect more. I feel like you're saying going too far is the point. I don't know if it.

Yes. I mean, you. That's why you're there. And I hate to say this, but I'm going to. Because we're being honest. People are talking about that joke. Talk about his set. Tony Hinchcliffe arguably had the best set or one of the best sets between Tony and Cheryl. And I would say Naim had a really strong set. I laughed. I was laughing out loud at Tony until that. Until the joke. But not even just that joke. I don't like when people joke about violent, tragic death. I, like Pete said. And then I was like, oh, why you have to say Pete had a great set, too. Pete had a Charlie Kirk joke in there. Like, would I tell those jokes? No. But do I get why they're being told? Yes. Like, I'm not looking at Pete crazy. I'm not looking at Tony crazy. Like, that's what. I know what you're going to do. I know your style of comedy. I'm going to appreciate humor. I don't get affected by the attempt of humor. I get it right in this case, like, do more. It's my production. We're live. The more is what. Like what. What is it that you expect me. You want me to. To take a live production and stand up and. And fight Tony or have a reaction like, Tony told a joke. It wasn't a tasteful joke to us. We didn't like it. Okay, hey, man, fuck that joke. We move on. I don't understand why we stand on a hill and it becomes like this. This big thing of like, oh, man, the motherfuckers, they do this and they're attacking the culture. It doesn't have to be that. It literally is. Either you're a fan of this level of content or you're not. And if you're not a fan, then you don't watch it.

Yeah, imagine that. And look, you're gonna find some jokes distasteful, and that's okay. And Chelsea Handler is now, like, you know, talking about white supremacy and how that's why she was attacked because of the patriarchy. And like, come on, lady. I actually lose this career.

My other hot take is that I like when people joke about death, actually. And I was. I was listening to Cheryl Underwood, who's another comic that was there, and there were some jokes told about the tragic death of her husband. Okay. If I were in a roast situation, I, too, lost a husband. I would expect there would be jokes about anything that is vulnerable in your life at these events, because that's literally what you're there for. And Cheryl Underwood said when asked about it, and you can tell she doesn't really want to be asked about it because she's also like, it's a roast. She's like, look, I knew they were gonna come at me for something and I told them, like, it better be funny and then I better have a comeback. And that seems to me like combined with Kevin Hart, the proper way to look at roasts, which apparently most of the people in the media in Hollywood are just being introduced to the concept
