This is an I Heart podcast. Welcome to the Tudor Dixon Podcast. We decided that we are going to bring Jamie Lee Lardner back. She's going to talk to us about all things Hollywood. Because sometimes you just need a break and you want to kind of gossip a little, right, Jamie?
B
Just a little.
A
So I. We had talked about Blake Lively the last time. I wanted to ask you, because this whole story about Taylor Swift getting pulled into this situation came out, but then that kind of died off. We didn't really hear much about it. And then recently Ryan Reynolds made a comment. But where did Taylor Swift go?
B
Okay, so as we remember, Taylor really just came off the ERAS tour, and that was an epically long tour. So honestly, she's just recouping. And as far as the Blake Lively of it all, she's been in the mix and muddying the water pretty much the whole time, depending on which side finds her useful in a given moment. But it's. It starts to feel like she's being used for a headline.
A
Yes. Yes. So what is the full story now on the Blake Lively debacle?
B
So the latest is basically speaking of Taylor Swift. It sounds like her messages are going to be admissible. And what Blake had been trying to argue was attorney's eyes only. And Baldoni got a win when they said all communications between Swift and Lively are to be submitted. So it was a win for Baldoni on that one.
A
So is she suing him? I thought he had a suit against her, and then that was dropped. So what. Where does that. All the legal battle stand between the two of them? And this is about that movie. It ends with us. And they. There was. She was accusing him of sexual harassment, and then he was accusing her of defamation. So give us a little update on where they stand.
B
So the New York Times won, and he was suing the New York Times. So the New York Times was able to prove that they did not defame him, but now he's defending himself against her civil rights complaint and the sexual harassment claims. So it's. It's still messy.
A
This is so not good. So in the midst of this, now we're hearing people saying that production has been down in la and there's obviously, we're also watching a political issue in la, and I think because every time the cameras kind of turn on Los Angeles for any type of political activity, there seems to be a conversation about their biggest industry, which is the movies. And they were seeing a lot of what was happening in la, moving out to Georgia and other states. There's Kind of a question as to what happens next, because the President has said he doesn't want to see Hollywood making movies in other countries. He wants movies made in the United States. However, people in Hollywood are saying it's too expensive to stay in Hollywood because it used to be easy to make movies there. Now we're looking for other places. You would think that it would be less expensive because of all the sets.
B
So there's a lot to unpack there. So I'll just start with the sets first. Yes. Hollywood is famous for its sound stages. And the business of Hollywood is very much localized in Los Angeles. Your executives, your producers, your talent agents, your lawyers, they're still pretty. Pretty local to Los Angeles. But when you talk production, a lot of scripts are location based. So, yes, in effect, Atlanta has great tax credits, so it's attractive to shoot there. That's really going to be your television shows, though, because television shows, if they're shooting on location, need that consistent availability to location. When we move to movie sets. Game of Thrones could only be shot in Wales and Croatia. You're just not going to get those landscapes. So give all the tax credits you want. The film's going to be set where it's going to be set. The story has to be told where it's told. So I don't really see even free tax incentives. Right. Like, no taxes at all. It's not going to change if the story's set in Beijing. We need to shoot in Beijing.
A
Right, right. Do you think that there is, though, a push that for things that used to be typical Hollywood films, are they moving out of Hollywood?
B
Yes, but again, people aren't shooting on soundstages anymore. Like, that old Hollywood model was really based on the soundstage, and we just don't shoot on stages anymore. These are all location, location, location.
A
Yeah, right, exactly. There was a real downturn, though, in movies. I mean, I think that we saw this in 2020 when everything closed and there's been a downturn. It's more streaming. And I've seen a lot of new, like, limited series coming out on Netflix and things like that. I just saw one called Sirens, and then everybody's like, you know, will there be a sequel to this? And I'm just kind of wondering, do you see that Hollywood is going more the streaming route and no longer into the theaters?
B
So Hollywood is in the business of data. Right. And consumer behavior is leaning towards streaming. Me personally, I like to stream versus going to a theater. So. So it makes more sense from an economic model to cater to the streaming audience. And then they get different budgets depending on what streamer they're on, so that that impacts their production value. But people aren't going to the movie theaters anymore. It's expensive. You're with, you know, an outlier of a crowd. Like you could have a talker ruining the movie the whole time. You want to hit the pause button and go get your own snacks. Not be beholden to stale popcorn at $13 a bucket. It makes more sense to cater to the streaming market. And people are watching a lot of content on their phones now, so short form content is exploding.
A
Hmm. So what's the buzz in Hollywood? Is there any, like, true gossip going on these days?
B
I mean, there's always gossip. It's the scandal of the week. I would say right now though, people are really concerned about Justin Bieber. He, he's been, when I've been talking to my friends, everyone's been like, you know, that poor guy, he's, he's got a lot going on.
A
Yeah. Because those. So that. We'll just expand on that a little bit. There was a social media message that went out that he shared his actual text messages with someone else. And I thought this was kind of, it was kind of like a look into some of the things that we've been told about the Hollywood world. And I think there's also been some question about the whole situation with P. Diddy and his life. And, and he has referenced, Bieber, has referenced multiple times that he's got anger issues because of the way he was treated in the past. And so if we kind of journey through Justin Bieber's life for a minute, he was obviously a very young Hollywood star. He. Or music star. He became a music star overnight. It seemed like at a very young age, a lot of money coming at him. But there's been speculation, well, how did that happen? And was he a part of maybe these freak off parties that Diddy was having? And, and he has said no. He came out and said he wasn't a part of it, but then he seems to be spiraling. He is. It's. I saw an article today saying that people have known that his marriage was over for a while. He went through a phase where he became super religious and he was going to church quite a bit. And during that time, I would say that he seemed pretty healthy. And now he's stepped away from that and he seems like he's, he's very much in an unhealthy situation. So these text messages that he posted was a guy Who? Or it seems like it was a guy who said to him, I guess it was because he said, I don't need another guy telling me that I'm lashing out. Because they said, you know, you're lashing out. You've got anger issues. And he kind of excused it as, yeah, I have anger issues. This is because of my past. There's nothing you can do about it. What's your take on that? Or what's kind of the buzz on the street there?
B
The bug on the street is actually a lot of concern. Everyone I talk to is concerned. They don't want to pull a Britney when they really were ruthless to Britney Spears when she very clearly was having mental health issues. So there's a lot more respect for what he's going through. It is clear it's mental health related. As far as the ditty of it all, people are speculating. But I have a theory that it also has to relate to new fatherhood. When people become parents, it kicks up a lot of dust for how their childhood was. And I'm sure he's looking back going, a bunch of things shouldn't have happened to me. And it might make him angry. So. And it certainly doesn't excuse his behavior, but it definitely explains his behavior. And honestly, people who are lost will sometimes try to find, like a beacon of hope. So he did kind of get into it with that pastor. I think it was the Hillsong Church who seemed to have gotten him on the right path for a minute. But at the end of the day, you need counseling. He needs a good counselor to navigate these issues because they're going to come up at different times.
A
Yeah. And I think a lot of people, I mean, it's such a hard situation because we've watched him grow up, essentially, and we've watched some weird situations. I mean, there's been people that have certainly shared the clips of adults that treated him like an adult when he wasn't an adult. And he's talked a little bit about how that was uncomfortable. And I think that because we're at this point where we've had some of this information exposed about Hollywood, people are kind of looking to him as well. You can expose it all, but he's hurting. And I think that's hard for the public to remember. And bringing up Brittany, I think it was interesting because social media has taken over in such a strange way. You know, I mean, I come from the era of Whitney Houston, and I think Whitney Houston was really struggling. Obviously she had a drug problem. We didn't really see it though. You know, there wasn't a conversation about it. There wasn't a lot of pressure on her. And then you see that you have Britney Spears kind of you're seeing, I mean, like I said, we didn't see what happened with Whitney Houston, but we were seeing Britney Spears. And still today we're seeing these strange videos of her dancing and kind of melting down. But there was this whole Free Britney movement and, and looking back on that, what did those people know about her life?
B
I'm firmly team Free Brittany. She's harmless as far as she needs a conservatorship. I mean, I think Kanye west does way more harm. That man needs a conservatorship. So if he's out on the streets, Britney should be. Britney was a slave to our childhoods and was the backbone of our childhood. She was the soundtrack to us growing up. Let her go do her dancing videos. She earned it. That's how I feel. She earned it. She doesn't have to entertain us anymore. She wants to spin around in circles doing her little wiggles. Go on, sister. If that makes sense.
A
Who's the latest person that has been doing these weird videos? I can't remember. Why am I blanking on? Alyssa Milano. She has been. Have you seen this?
B
I saw one and I was like, oh, that's an interesting choice.
A
Yeah, I don't know. I mean that, that was very weird. And I, I think she is my age and I don't know if that is more of an attention thing, but she was like really active. I think she was very active on social media for a while. And then it seems like after the election she kind of quieted down. So I don't know, maybe this is her resurgence into coming out and meeting fans where they are again.
B
You know, I never know. But I do have like a perspective on people who grew up scripted and doing scripted TV shows very often have a tough time translating to the non scripted world that is social media. She's used to playing a character that's written on a page and bringing that to life. She's not used to making an audience love her because of her quick wit. So it's, it's just a different skill set. I think that's why a lot of actors don't translate to social media.
A
That's interesting. There's also in the new, I guess I would call it kind of entertainment news. There's been some discussion that the big network, I think, what network is the View on Sarah?
B
Abc.
A
Abc. So there's been Some like behind the scenes that ABC might be thinking that they're done with the View or they're trying to push the View in a different direction. Have you heard any scuttlebutt on that?
B
You know, they have this discussion every few years and the View likes to be relevant and so, like they're always out, to be honest with you, they're always saying that, is this our last season? We need new faces to refresh it. We need to bring in a younger demo. You know, I would be surprised if it ended because it is an ensemble cast. They can just put some new blood on.
A
Right.
B
You will see Charlie d' Amelio on there before we know it, she's a TikTok star.
A
Well, we'll see. We'll see what happens. I guess that is the buzz on Hollywood. Is there anything else that you want to hit on before we go?
B
The Karen Reed trial was super interesting. Yeah, I'm really.
A
What is your take on that? Because people. I saw people like Harding it and loving it and other people who like, man, this woman just got away with something.
B
I know. I think it depends on where you get your information because there's pro Karen Reid and anti Karen Reid narratives. And once you like a video, algorithms auto feed you more content like that so you can get down an echo chamber very quickly. So depending on where you get your information, which is why I like to scatter mine through multiple sources. I think justice was served. I. I don't think she did it. I think she did drive drunk, which she admitted several times. I don't think she killed the guy. I really don't.
A
So this is the woman who, just so people know, this is the woman who was accused of killing her boyfriend, who was a police officer. Then I saw something the other day where people were like, oh, this was a cover up and it was buddies of his, but I don't know the details there, but she was acquitted. And this is the second trial, right?
B
Yeah, the first one they had, I guess a hung jury or a mistrial. It was a mistrial. And so she had to go through it all over again. Interestingly, one of the jurors joined her legally team.
A
Oh, really?
B
Yeah. I was like, I didn't even know that was possible.
A
But also that's such a. That's kind of a shock.
B
Right? Like, I didn't know that could be a thing. And I was also like, if you're a juror, you have access to so much information, you would be useful on the defense.
A
Right. And you would think that you would think that, that, I mean, I guess if you're a juror, you would think that you would not have become a juror if you had some sort of a legal background. But you never know. I guess that's, that is interesting information.
B
Enough to know, like, the ins and outs of how that could be. It made me kind of give us like a side eye. I was like, that's allowed. At the same time, you do want intelligent jurors. So, yeah, I guess it is what it is. But I thought that was so interesting.
A
That is so interesting. Well, thank you so much. Thanks for coming on today. Jamie Lee Lardner, I appreciate having you.
