Dr. Nicole Safire
Welcome to Wellness on Mass. I'm Dr. Nicole Safire and this is your weekly rundown. This week, we are remembering two larger than life Ozzy Osbourne and Hulk Hogan. And while they dominated the stage and the wrestling ring, they also both battled quiet wars with their own health, reminding us that behind every icon is a human story of resilience and sometimes vulnerability. Ozzy Osbourne, the Prince of Darkness, a trailblazer of heavy metal, passed away at the age of 76, just 17 days after what would be his final performance in Birmingham. Now, Ozzy had been open about his battle of Parkinson's disease, a condition that robbed him of mobility but not necessarily his spirit. He arrived for the concert in a wheelchair. He sat on the throne while performing and was still able to give fans that familiar fire in his final public moments, shared in a touching video just days before his death. He was sitting with his daughter and his grandson and you could see him smile. And then, just like that, he was gone. A soft exit from a life that had always been anything but quiet. Oz's death is believed to be from complications of his Parkinson's and years of chronic illness, though official details remain private at this time. Now, to clarify, Parkinson's disease itself isn't usually the direct cause of someone's death. Most patients succumb to complications of the disease, like aspiration, pneumonia, falls, heart issues or other infections. As mobility and swallowing start to get harder, the wrists quietly build. And it's a reminder that managing Parkinson's means watching the whole person, not just the tremors. Ozzy Osbourne changed the sound of music. He changed the stage. And he changed the way people saw vulnerability in aging rock stars. Ozzy showed us that toughness isn't about never falling. It's about. It's about rising again and again, and sometimes even again, especially when the world is watching. And just two days later, the world lost another legend, wrestling icon Hulk Hogan, real name Terry Bollea, at the age of 71 after he collapsed in his home in Clearwater, Florida. He was rushed to the hospital, which people cite for a cardiovascular or a cardiac arrest, like a heart attack. But he could not be revived. And now, while exact details are still emerging, while the call to the paramedics somewhere cited cardiac arrest, it has not been confirmed that he actually died of a heart attack. Sources say that Hogan had undergone a recent neck surgery and may have suffered post operative complications. There had been rumors circulating on social media that he wasn't doing well for the last few months. Now, Hogan's health struggles, they weren't new. He's endured over dozens of surgeries. I think the count was 25. What they have said on his back, his knees, his neck, his hips, his shoulders. After decades in the ring, he also publicly admitted to using anabolic steroids during his wrestling career, especially in, like, the 80s and the early 90s. And chronic steroid use itself has health consequences. It can lead to cardiovascular strain, liver damage, hormonal imbalance, and over time, it absolutely increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. The specific surgery that he reportedly had in May of this year was called an acdf, where there are exceptions, the cervical spine, but they have to go through the front of the neck to get there, oftentimes moving to the side, vocal cords, the trachea that we breathe from the esophagus, that our food goes down. Some of the rumors were saying that he had difficulty speaking after the surgery. That can be quite common and oftentimes as temporary, just as the nerve that allows us to speak is kind of stunned. Usually gets better, but you can certainly have bleeding and infection and other things which can be quite serious. His wife recently shared that he was doing better and in good spirits. But his sudden collapse shows just how fragile recovery can be when a lifetime of physical trauma and medication use catches up. And like Ozzy, Hogan never stopped giving his fans absolutely everything, even if it meant pushing through pain and showing up at the Republican National Convention for Donald Trump. He inspired millions to believe in themselves, to fight, and to never back down. Two men, two legends. Both gone within 48 hours. Let this be a reminder. Health is fragile. Life is precious. We only get one chance on this earth. And legacies are built not on perfection, but on perseverance. To Ozzy and Hulk, we thank you so much for the music, for the memories, for the mayhem, and most of all, for being human in a world that often forgets what it looks like. May they rest in peace.
