מְבָרְכִים רֹאשׁ חֹדֶשׁ אֱלוּל, אֲמִירַת כָּל הַתְּהִלִּים בְּהַשְׁכָּמָה. יוֹם הִתְוַעֲדוּת[On Shabbos Mevarchim, it is our custom] to recite the entire Book of Tehillim early in the morning and to hold a farbrengen on that day.חֹדֶשׁ אֱלוּל הוּא חֹדֶשׁ הַחֶשְׁבּוֹןElul is a month of reckoning.דִּכְמוֹ בְּגַשְׁמִיּוּת הִנֵּה הַבַּעַל עֵסֶקJust as a businessmanבִּכְדֵי שֶׁיִּהְיֶה הָעֵסֶק כִּדְבָּעֵי וְיִתֵּן רֶוַח רַבwho wants to run his business properly and most profitablyצָרִיךְ מִזְּמַן לִזְמַן לַעֲשׂוֹת חֶשְׁבּוֹן וּלְתַקֵן אֶת כָּל הַחֶסְרוֹנוֹתmust take stock from time to time and correct anything amiss,כֵּן הוּא גַּם בַּעֲבוֹדָה הָרוּחָנִית בַּעֲבוֹדַת הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרֵךְso too must we act in our spiritual work of avodas HaShem.דְכָל הַשָּׁנָה הִנֵּה כָּל יִשְׂרָאֵל עוֹסְקִין בְּתּוֹרָה וּמִצְוֹת וּבְמִדּוֹת טוֹבוֹתThroughout the year the Jewish people study Torah, observe mitzvos, and cultivate desirable character traits.בְּחֹדֶש אֱלוּל הוּא חֹדֶשׁ הַחֶשְבּוֹןThe month of Elul is the time of reckoning,אֲשֶׁר כָּל אֶחָד וְאֶחָד מִיִּשְׂרָאֵלwhen each and every Jewכָּל חַד וְחַד לְפוּם שִׁיעוּרָא דִילֵיהaccording to his capacity,הֵן הַיּוֹשֵׁב אֹהֶל וְהֵן הַבַּעַל עֵסֶקbe he a Torah scholar or a businessman,צְרִיכִים לַעֲשׂוֹת חֶשְׁבּוֹן צֶדֶק בְּנַפְשָׁםhas to make a fair account within himselfמִכֹּל אֲשֶׁר עָבַר עֲלֵיהֶם בְּמֶשֶׁךְ הַשָּׁנָהover everything that has transpired in his life in the course of the past year. וְלֵידַע הַמַּעֲלוֹת בַּעֲבוֹדָתָם וּלְחַזְקָםThus, he can acknowledge the good points in his Divine service and reinforce them,וְאֶת הַחֶסְרוֹנוֹת שֶׁבָּהֶם וּבַעֲבוֹדָתָם לְתַקְּנָםas well as correct the shortcomings in himself and in his efforts.דְעַל יְדֵי הֲכָנָה טוֹבָה זוֹAnd by virtue of such positive preparation,זוֹכִים לְשָׁנָה טוֹבָה וּמְתוּקָה בְּגַשְׁמִיּוּת וְרוּחָנִיּוּתwe are found worthy of being blessed with a good and sweet year, both materially and spiritually.Text and Translation courtesy of Sichos in EnglishFor questions and follow-up: cablejew@gmail.com

אַאַמוּ"ר כּוֹתֵב בְּאֶחָד מִמִּכְתָּבָיוMy revered father, [the Rebbe Rashab,] writes in a letter: שָׁמַעְתִּי בְּשֵׁם כְּבוֹד קְדוּשַׁת אֲבוֹתֵינוּ הַקְּדוֹשִׁים“I heard in the name of our forerunners — the Rebbeim,זֵכֶר צַדִּיקִים וּקְדוֹשִׁים לִבְרָכָה לְחַיֵּי הָעוֹלָם הַבָּא, נִשְׁמוֹתֵיהֶם עֵדֶן, זְכוּתָם יָגֵן עָלֵינוּof blessed memory —שֶׁגַּם עַל בַּת צָרִיךְ לוֹמַר לְתּוֹרָה (וּלְחוּפָּה וּלְמַעֲשִׂים טוֹבִים)that for a daughter, too, [in the prayer that is offered when the father of a newborn child is called to the Reading of the Torah, we ask that the parents should be blessed with success in raising her] ‘to Torah,’ and [not only] ‘to marriage, and to good deeds.’עַל פִּי מַה שֶׁאָמְרוּ רַזַ"ל (בְּרָכוֹת יז. א)For our Sages state (Berachos 17a): נָשֵׁי בְּמַאי זָכְיָן בְּאִיקְרוֹי כו' וּבְאִתְנוֹי כו' וְנָטְרִין כו‘By virtue of what do women earn merit? מְקוּבָּל רַבִּי מִפִּי רַבִּיThe following tradition was handed down from Rebbe to Rebbe:אִין דעֶר צַייט פוּן מַחֲלוֹקֶת הַיְּדוּעָהAt the time of the well-known dispute [between chassidim and misnagdim],האָבּעֶן חֲסִידִים דעֶרצֵיילט דעֶם אַלטעֶן רֶבִּי'ןthe Alter Rebbe’s chassidim told himדִי גְרוֹיסעֶ יִסּוּרִים וואָס מ'האָט פוּן דִי מִתְנַגְדִישׁעֶ פְּראָסטעֶ אִידעֶןthat they suffered greatly from the simple folk among the misnagdim.האָט דעֶר רֶבִּי געֶזאָגטThe Alter Rebbe replied:דעֶר זֵיידעֶ — אַזוֹי פְלעֶגט דעֶר רֶבִּי רוּפעֶן דעֶם בַּעַל שֵׁם טוֹב“Grandfather (that was how the Alter Rebbe would refer to the Baal Shem Tov)האָט זֵייעֶר לִיב געֶהאַט דִי פְרָאסטֶע אִידֶעןhad a great love for simple Jews.אִין דִי עֶרשׁטֶע טעֶג וועֶן אִיךְ בִּין געֶוועֶן אִין מעֶזרִיטשׁIn the first days of my stay in Mezritch,האָט דעֶר רֶבִּי הָרַב הַמַּגִּיד געֶזאָגטthe Rebbe, the Maggid [of Mezritch], declared:מְרַגְלָא בְּפוּמֵיהּ פוּן רֶבִּי'ן — הַבַּעַל שֵׁם טוֹב‘The Rebbe, the Baal Shem Tov, used to sayאַהֲבַת יִשְׂרָאֵל אִיז אַהֲבַת הַמָּקוֹםthat to love a fellow Jew is to love G‑d.בָּנִים אַתֶּם לה' אֱלֹקֵיכֶם[As it is written,] You are children of G‑d your L‑rd. אַז מעֶן האָט האָלט דעֶם פאָטעֶר האָט מעֶן האָלט דִי קִינדעֶרOne who loves the Father, loves [His] children.’”Text and Translation courtesy of Sichos in EnglishFor questions and follow-up: cablejew@gmail.com

בְּחוֹרֶף תרנ"בIn the winter of 5652 (1891), "כַּאֲשֶׁר אַאַמוּ"ר לָמַד עִמִּי בְּסֵפֶר הַתַּנְיָא "וְנֶפֶשׁ הַשֵּׁנִית בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל הִיא חֵלֶק אֱלֹקַהּ מִמַּעַל מַמָּשׁmy revered father, the Rebbe [Rashab], taught me the statement in Tanya that “the second soul of a Jew is an actual part of G‑d Above.”הִסְבִּיר כִּי הַנּוֹשְׂאִים בְּתֵּיבַת מִמַּעַל וּבְתֵיבַת מַמָּשׁ הֵם הֲפָכִיםHe pointed out that the terms “actual” (mamash) and “from above" (mimaal) are contradictory.מִמַּעַל תּוֹאֲרוֹ רוּחָנִיּוּת שֶׁבְּרוּחָנִיוּת וּמַמָּשׁ תּוֹאֲרוֹ גַּשְׁמִיוּת שֶׁבְּגַשְׁמִיוּת“From above” alludes to the very highest levels of spirituality, whereas “actual” denotes the most palpable physicality.וַיְבַאֵר כִּי זֶהוּ מַעֲלַת נֶפֶשׁ הַשֵּׁנִיתThis, he explained, is the unique gift of the Divine soul. שֶׁעִם הֱיוֹתָה רוּחָנִיוּת שֶׁבְּרוּחָנִיוּת פּוֹעֶלֶת בְּגַשְׁמִיּוּת שֶׁבְּגַשְׁמִיוּת.Though it is sheer ethereal spirituality, it impacts physicality at its most palpable.Text and Translation courtesy of Sichos in EnglishFor questions and follow-up: cablejew@gmail.com

הַהִתְעַסְקוּת בְּדַרְכֵי הַחֲסִידוּת הוּאBeing involved in the spiritual lifestyle of Chassidus meansאֲשֶׁר גַּם בְּהָלְכוֹ בַּשּׁוּק טָרוּד בַּעֲסָקָיוthat even when walking about in the marketplace, preoccupied with one’s business,יַחְשׁוֹב מַה הוּא יָכוֹל לַעֲשׂוֹת בְּעַד עִנְיָנֵי הַחֲסִידוּת וְטוֹבַת הַחֲסִידִיםa person thinks about what he can do on behalf of Chassidus and for the good of his fellow chassidim.וּכְשֶׁהוּא פּוֹגֵשׁ מִי שֶׁהוּא מֵאַנְשֵׁי הַשּׁוּק מִמַּכִּירָיו — בְּעִנְיָנֵי מִסְחָרWhen he meets his business acquaintances in the market,יְדַבֵּר עַל לִבּוֹhe speaks to them persuasivelyכִּי יָבוֹא אֶל שִׁעוּרֵי הַלִּמוּדִים בְּדִּבְרֵי אֱלֹקִים חַיִּים אוֹ לְאֵיזוֹ הִתְוַעֲדוּתabout attending a class in Chassidus or a farbrengen.וְהַהִתְעַסְקוּת בְּדַרְכֵי הַחֲסִידוּת הוּא חוֹבַת גַּבְרָאBeing involved in the ways of Chassidus is a responsibility of every individual,מִבְּלִי הֶבְדֵל בֵּין גָּדוֹל וְקָטָן בִּידִיעַת דִּבְרֵי אֱלֹקִים חַיִּיםregardless of whether his knowledge of Chassidus is great or scant.Text and Translation courtesy of Sichos in EnglishFor questions and follow-up: cablejew@gmail.com

כְּשֵׁם שֶׁמִּצְוַת תְּפִלִּין, עַל דֶּרֶךְ מָשָׁלJust like by the mitzvah of tefillin, to use an example,יֵשׁ לָהּ מָקוֹם קָבוּעַ בְּרֹאשׁ וּבִזְרוֹעַrelates to a specific place on the head, and on the arm,וּמַרְגִּישׁ כּוֹבֶד הַתְּפִלָּה שֶׁל רֹאשׁwhere one feels its weight on the head,וְהַהִדּוּק דִּתְפִלָּה שֶׁל יָדand where one feels the tightness [of the straps] on the arm.כֵּן הוּא בְּמִצְוַת אַהֲבָה וְיִרְאָהSimilarly, the mitzvos of loving and fearing G‑d [must be felt physically].וּכְמוֹ שֶׁכָּתַב הָרַמְבַּ"ם (יְסוֹדֵי הַתּוֹרָה פֶּרֶק בּ' הַלָכָה א')Thus Rambam writes (in Hilchos Yesodei HaTorah 2:1):הָאֵל הַנִּכְבָּד וְהַנּוֹרָא הַזֶּה מִצְוָה לְאַהֲבָה וּלְיִרְאָה אוֹתוֹ“It is a mitzvah to love and fear this glorious and awesome G‑d,שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר וְאָהַבְתָּ אֶת ה' אֱלוֹקֶיךָ וְנֶּאֱמַר אֶת ה' אֱלוֹקֶיךָ תִּירָאas it is written, ‘And you shall love G‑d your L‑rd,’ and as it is written, ‘You shall fear G‑d your L‑rd.’”הִנֵּה שִׁעוּר מִצְוֹת אֵלּוּ הוּא אֲשֶׁר יוּרְגְּשׁוּ בְּהֶרְגֵּשׁ גוּפָנִי בִּבְשַׂר הַלֵּב מַמָּשׁNow, these mitzvos may be considered fulfilled when one experiences them physically, in the very flesh of the heart.וּכְמוֹ אָדָם הַפּוֹגֵשׁ אֶת אוֹהֲבוֹ הַנֶּאֱמָן[One’s feelings of love for G‑d should have an effect] similar to meeting a faithful friend.וְלֹא זוּ בִּלְבָד אַז אִים זאָל וועֶרעֶן גוּט פוּן דעֶם[Then] not only does the encounter give him a feeling of well-being,שֶׁיִּשְׁכַּח עַל כָּל הַדְּבָרִים הַמֵּעִיקִים אוֹתוֹso that he forgets all the matters that bother him,אֶלָּא עוֹד שֶׁיִּתְעוֹרֵר בּוֹ חַיּוּת פְּנִימִי בְּתִקְוָה טוֹבָהbut moreover, inner energy and positive expectations are aroused within him,כִּי לִבּוֹ טוֹב עָלָיוbecause of his positive disposition.וְכֵן בְּמִדַּת הַיִּרְאָה נוֹפֵל עָלָיו פַּחַד גָּדוֹל וּמוֹרָאLikewise, with the attribute of fear of G‑d, great fear and dread should possess him,כִּי בְּשָׁעָה הַהִיא הוּא נִזְכַּר עַל כָּל עִנְיָנָיו הַלֹא טוֹבִים בְּמַחֲשָׁבָה דִּבּוּר וּמַעֲשֶׂהfor at that time he will recall his undesirable thoughts, words, and actions,וְלִבּוֹ יִכְאַב בִּכְאֵב מוּרְגָשׁ מִיִּרְאַת הָעוֹנֶשׁ בְּיִרְאַת שָׁמַיִםand his heart will feel actual pain from his fear of punishment, his fear of Heaven.וְלִפְעָמִים הוּא בְּרֶגֶשׁ שֶׁל יְרֵא בּוֹשֶׁתOn occasion, he will feel awe that leaves him abashed, אוֹ גַּם יִרְאַת הָרוֹמְמוּתand sometimes he will even feel an elevating sense of awe of G‑d.Text and Translation courtesy of Sichos in EnglishFor questions and follow-up: cablejew@gmail.com

הַמִּתְפַּלְלִים בְּאַרְבָּעָה זוּגוֹת תְּפִלִּין כָּךְ נוֹהַגִיםThose who put on four pairs of tefillin in the course of the Morning Prayers should follow this order:א) מַנִיחִים תְּפִלִּין שֶׁל יַד וּתְפִלִּין שֶׁל רֹאשׁ דְרַשִׁ"י קוֹדֶם אֲמִירַת פֶּרֶק אֵיזֶהוּ(1) The arm-tefillin and head-tefillin of Rashi are put on before Eizehu mekoman is recited, וּמִתְפַּלְלִים בָּהֶם עַד אַחֲרֵי אַךְ צַדִּיקִים גוand while wearing them one continues with the Morning Prayers until one has completed the verse beginning Ach tzaddikim. ב) מְסִירִים תְּפִלִּין שֶׁל רֹאשׁ דְרַשִׁ"י(2) The head-tefillin of Rashi are removed,וּמַנִיחִים — בְּלֹא בְּרָכָה — תְּפִלִּין שֶׁל רֹאשׁ דְשִׁמוּשָׁא רַבָּאand replaced — without a blessing — by those of [the author of] Shimusha Rabba. וְקוֹרְאִים שְׁמַע גו' עַד אֱמֶתThe Shema is recited until Emes, וְאוֹמְרִים מִזְמוֹרֵי תְּהִלִּים כְּפִי שֶׁנֶּחֱלַק לִימֵי הַחֹדֶשׁand chapters of Tehillim are recited as apportioned for the days of the month. וְהַמְהַדְרִים הָיוּ לוֹמְדִים אוֹתָם עִם פֵּרוּשׁ רַשִׁ"י וּמְצוּדוֹתSome punctilious chassidim would study the daily reading of Tehillim with the commentaries of Rashi and Metzudos. ג) אַחַר כָּךְ מַנִיחִים תְּפִלִּין דְרַבֵּנוּ תַּם — בְּלֹא בְּרָכָה(3) One [removes these tefillin and] puts on the tefillin of Rabbeinu Tam — without a blessing —וְקוֹרְאִים שְׁמַע גו' עַד אֱמֶת, פָּרָשַׁת קַדֵּשׁ גו' וְהַזְכִירוֹת שֶׁנִּדְפְּסוּ בַּסִּדּוּרand recites the Shema until Emes, the passage beginning Kadesh, and the Six Remembrances that appear in the Siddur. וְלוֹמְדִים פֶּרֶק מִשְׁנָיוֹת כָּל אֶחָד לְפִי הֲבָנָתוֹOne then studies a chapter of Mishnayos according to his level of understanding.ד) מְסִירִים תְּפִלִּין שֶׁל רֹאשׁ דְרַבֵּנוּ תַּם(4) The head-tefillin of Rabbeinu Tam are removed,וּמְנִיחִים תְּפִלִּין שֶׁל רֹאשׁ דְרַאְבַ"ד — בְּלֹא בְּרָכָהand replaced — without a blessing — by those of Raavad. וְקוֹרְאִים שְׁמַע גו' עַד אֱמֶתOne recites the Shema until Emes, וְלוֹמְדִים פָּרָשָׁה חוּמָשׁ עִם פֵּרוּשׁ רַשִׁ"י — מִפָּרָשַׁת הַשָּׁבוּעַand studies the part of the week’s Sidra (with the commentary of Rashi) that corresponds to the day of the week;יוֹם א' עַד שֵׁנִי בְּיוֹם בּ' פָּרָשָׁה בּ' וכוthat is, on Sunday until Sheni, on Monday until Shlishi, and so on.Text and Translation courtesy of Sichos in EnglishFor questions and follow-up: cablejew@gmail.com
