You're listening to Comedy Central. Hello and welcome to the Pre Cap, a daily show podcast where we sit down with this week's host and recap some of the news from last week and talk about what's coming up next. My name is Nicole Conlon. I'm one of the writers at the show, and I am here with this week's host, Desi Lydick. Hi, Desi. How are you? Nicole?
Desi Lydick
We get to do one together.
Nicole Conlon
I know. I'm so excited. I haven't done one with you yet.
Desi Lydick
I know. I love an excuse to hang with you.
Nicole Conlon
Yes. Now, we're gonna get into the news of the past week in a second. But the most important thing that I want to talk about from the last week is that you were on Jimmy Kimmel this week.
Desi Lydick
It is the most important thing.
Nicole Conlon
It's the most important thing. And the reason it's the most important thing is that I saw that you were there the same day as Meryl Streep.
Desi Lydick
Can you even believe? First of all, I gotta follow Jon Stewart every week when I host and then I go to Kimmel and he makes me follow Meryl Streep. How fucked up is that? So messed up.
Nicole Conlon
That just shows that you have an incredible star power that they're like, we can trust Desi to go up after Screen legends, hardly.
Desi Lydick
But the bigger the star. You could just ride those coattails.
Nicole Conlon
Yeah, I think that's perfect.
Desi Lydick
That was my thing.
Nicole Conlon
Did you get to meet her? Is she cool?
Desi Lydick
Okay, I am still having a complete out of body. I didn't think I was gonna get to meet her because I was walking onto the stage as she was walking off of the stage down two separate hallways. So I thought. I kind of went like, oh, Meryl. And then thought, well, that was my chance. I never got to see her. And we finished up, I went back to the green room and said my goodbyes and walked out. And she was standing there signing autographs because she's a queen. Signing autographs for people outside. And I was like, okay, I have to introduce myself. So I was, like, standing by.
Nicole Conlon
You got into the crowd with people? Yeah, I have an autograph.
Desi Lydick
I grabbed a Sharpie and started signing as her. They won't notice. So I'm standing off to the side, and I'm waiting for her to finish, and she comes over, and someone that she works with introduced me to her. And I put my hand out and I go, I am so an admirer. And before I could even finish my sentence, she goes, oh, I know who you are. I watch your show all the time. And I about, like. I don't even remember anything that happened.
Nicole Conlon
If Meryl Streep said that to me, I would. I would dissolve into a fine mist and float away.
Desi Lydick
And then she gave me a hug. I haven't showered since.
Nicole Conlon
That's normal for you, though, right?
Desi Lydick
Yeah, no, this is totally on Brand.
Nicole Conlon
Well, that's so cool. You were so great on Kiss. Kimmel. You're so sweet. Thank you. God, what a weekend.
Desi Lydick
He made it easy.
Nicole Conlon
I hate you for it. I want. I want to meet Meryl Streep. That sounds awesome. Okay, now that we have the big news of the week out of the way, there's another exciting story that is somewhat personal for you because you are from Kentucky.
Desi Lydick
Oh, yeah.
Nicole Conlon
The Kentucky Derby was this weekend.
Desi Lydick
The Kentucky Derby was this weekend.
Nicole Conlon
And for the first time, a female trainer.
Desi Lydick
Yes.
Nicole Conlon
Horse. Won the Derby.
Desi Lydick
Won the Derby. First time ever. Which is kind of remarkable, isn't it?
Nicole Conlon
Yes, it's super remarkable. Now, it's worth noting that she didn't win the Derby. The horse did.
Desi Lydick
The horse. Yes.
Nicole Conlon
But she did train the horse.
Desi Lydick
Yes. She also was not the jockey. She did not ride on the horse.
Nicole Conlon
But it was also. It was the jockeys. Jose Otis Jorse.
Desi Lydick
You can say that again. Wait, this jockey's name was Jorce.
Nicole Conlon
Really funny.
Desi Lydick
What are the odds?
Nicole Conlon
Jose Ortiz was the name of the jockey, and I think he's been in the Derby like 11 or 12 times and this was his first win, so that's exciting for him too. And I was looking at pictures of Cherie Devoe, who is the horse's trainer, and the horse afterwards, and they love each other and the horse was like nuzzling into her and they were hugging each other. It was really sweet.
Desi Lydick
That's really odd. It was a huge win. That was a huge moment for her. I knew that that was her one. Like, that was her dream ever since, I don't know, since she was a little girl. But like, since she decided to become a horse trainer, she said, I want to be the first woman to win the Kentucky Derby. So that's. That's great. We have a little bit of good feminist news.
Nicole Conlon
Finally, finally, finally. Can I tell you, this is a total tangent, but I'm. Fans of mine will know that I'm a huge Murder She Wrote fan. And I. I just constantly have it on TV in the background. There's like 11 episodes of Murder She Wrote where she solves like a. Like a horse racing related murder. I don't know if it was just like a producer on the show, like loves horse racing and was like, do an episode and this will be a tax write off for me. Or.
Desi Lydick
Yeah, maybe they have a pretty hardcore hors racing gambling addiction. Maybe that's where my mind went to.
Nicole Conlon
There's. There's so many episodes of it. It's wild. The other thing that I want to talk about with the Kentucky Derby is usually there's so many fun horse names. This year there were a lot of regal horses.
Desi Lydick
Yes.
Nicole Conlon
There was one called Intrepido. Oh, and for the record, the horse that won the Derby is named Golden Tempo.
Desi Lydick
Right.
Nicole Conlon
Which I think is fun.
Desi Lydick
It's a great name.
Nicole Conlon
Intrepido is good. My favorite of the horse names is Dan and Bourbon.
Desi Lydick
Dan and Bourbon is a great name
Nicole Conlon
because it feels like whoever named it was, was like, shit, I gotta name the horse. And was just like looking around in their fridge and was like, we got Dannon yogurt, Bourbon. Fine, do it. Run with it. Put it together.
Desi Lydick
It's got Bourbon. That'll people be happy. Kentuckians love it.
Nicole Conlon
Yes. Incrediboult is good. Chief Wallaby is good. Now there was a horse called Great White who fell.
Desi Lydick
Who fell and couldn't even race.
Nicole Conlon
Yes.
Desi Lydick
So I guess the Great White Race is no longer. I mean, the horse is okay.
Nicole Conlon
The horse is fine.
Desi Lydick
The horse is not going anywhere. The horse is fine.
Nicole Conlon
But the race didn't happen. The downfall of the great white race. It truly was the downfall.
Desi Lydick
Really Great white.
Nicole Conlon
That's really tough for Kentucky.
Desi Lydick
Yes.
Nicole Conlon
Yes.
Desi Lydick
So it was. That was a big blow.
Nicole Conlon
Yes.
Desi Lydick
Plus the female traitor. They were very.
Nicole Conlon
It was tough. It's. We're being. Kentucky is being pushed into the future against its will.
Desi Lydick
Yes. I do think there is something to be learned about the Kentucky Derby with the midterms coming up. I think about this sometimes. They are doing something right in terms of it's a short race, you don't have to run a long campaign.
Nicole Conlon
Yeah.
Desi Lydick
They have hard age limits.
Nicole Conlon
Yes.
Desi Lydick
And you can't win more than once.
Nicole Conlon
Wow.
Desi Lydick
Right?
Nicole Conlon
This is such an insightful point. Don't you. We need all of our, like, House and Senate races to operate by Kentucky Derby rules.
Desi Lydick
That's right. I think we could rip a page out of the Kentucky degree rule.
Nicole Conlon
And if a candidate falls for their own safety, they have to be out of the race.
Desi Lydick
They have to be out. You fall, you're out. And most importantly, you're not allowed to start a podcast.
Nicole Conlon
So I'd listen to a horse podcast.
Desi Lydick
I would, too.
Nicole Conlon
I think it'd be fun. Speaking of horses and podcasts, producer Alan, would you mind pulling up this video that I have? There was a trend on TikTok a while ago that I'd love to get just your quick reaction to, which is. And by the way, I looked this up, everybody. Whenever there's like an animal video, everyone in the comments is like, these animals are suffering. I looked it up. It's because they're excited.
Desi Lydick
Okay.
Nicole Conlon
These are retired racehorses who are just hanging out and they are reacting to the Kentucky Derby. Trumpet sound. Alan, will you play this for me?
Desi Lydick
Oh, no.
Nicole Conlon
Are they.
Desi Lydick
Is it ptsd?
Nicole Conlon
It's. I don't. It's not. It's them, like, they're bred to run. So I think all of them are like, oh, shit, I gotta go, I gotta go.
Desi Lydick
I gotta get hydrated.
Nicole Conlon
They're reacting the same way that, like, when you're in Penn Station and you hear your train is, like, about to leave, and you're like, oh, no. You're like, in the Dunkin Donuts line. But yeah, I read the comments and I read, like, horse trainers and they were like, it's cause they love running.
Desi Lydick
Oh, that's so funny. I will say I have a very similar reaction. My husband and I got married in Kentucky and we had an outdoor wedding and right before I walked down the aisle, I thought, you know what would be really funny is if I got the guy from Churchill Downs to come over and do the call to the post.
Nicole Conlon
That's amazing.
Desi Lydick
And we hired this guy. It made us so happy. It was so ridiculous. He thought it would just be a funny joke. But then like everyone who was sitting down waiting for the wedding to begin, they were like, oh my God, are
Nicole Conlon
we gonna get trampled by horses?
Desi Lydick
So that horse look, that's like the look on everyone's face at my wedding when that happened. Should we duck?
Nicole Conlon
Do we need to? I thought it was fun that you sprinted down the aisle.
Desi Lydick
I did, I did. And then I ran right out of there. We actually never got married. Never looked back.
Nicole Conlon
Yeah, well, seems like a nice guy. My husband and I walked out to our reception to the Godzilla bum bum bum bum bum. Which was a lot of fun. I fully support this.
Desi Lydick
Yes, it was great.
Nicole Conlon
Yes. So congratulations to Sherry Devoe and Golden Tempo and Jose Ortiz on your big Kentucky Derby win. And I hope all three of you got a nice bag of oats at the end of it. You all deserve it.

some good news out of the south for so long before they return to our regularly scheduled Jim Crow policies. Because the Supreme Court ruled that Louisiana's congressional map was an unconstitutional racial gerrymander. Which, side note is kind of crazy, because this is the same court with the same justices that in 2024, ruled that Louisiana had to create a second majority black district. So they. They were like, we're going to start this, and we're going to finish it. It's. It's just crazy. And so they make this ruling, and according to precedent, it should obviously apply to the next election cycle. But now the governor of Louisiana has put House races on hold so they can implement this ruling right away, which is crazy because early voting's already underway. Some people have already sent their ballots back in.
Desi Lydick
Right.
Nicole Conlon
It's wild. And I was listening to this story on npr, and this reporter was like, there's a ton of confusion. I went to a polling site. There were people who weren't sure what to do because the House races are on the ballot. It's too late to take them off. Y officials have said that the votes cast won't be counted at the poll. There was no big signage explaining the change, just a sheet of all of the races that were supposed to be happening that was up on the wall, and it had been updated in pen.
Desi Lydick
In pen. I said that, too.
Nicole Conlon
Somebody was just like, this one. It's like when you run out of a special at a restaurant and you're like, I guess we're just not doing this one anymore.
Desi Lydick
So 86 the soup. Oh, wait, I can't say that.
Nicole Conlon
You can't say 86. Can't say that the FBI's gonna come after you. Watch out. So that whole situation is crazy, and that is, like, ongoing, because obviously we don't know what's gonna happen with that because they're facing legal challenges and hopefully this will work out. But it is crazy that they're trying to implement it while voting is already happening. It's so, like, grossly undemocratic.
Desi Lydick
Oh, yeah. And what do you think is inspiring it? Could it be that they're not particularly popular? Is that. Do you think maybe it's suspect that voters are not in favor of what the president is doing right now?
Nicole Conlon
Yeah. I don't know why they would want to gerrymander away a congressional district that would probably be represented by somebody who would oppose the president's actions. We may never know what the reason is. Right, right, right, right. But we can insinuate it, certainly.
Desi Lydick
Well, I guess we'll never find out.
Nicole Conlon
We'll never know. And this is, like, so undemocratic that last week, when the king of England was here. Even he was like, you guys gotta watch it.
Desi Lydick
Yes. Yes.
Nicole Conlon
Like, I'm a king. And even I'm like, this is kind of crazy, right?
Desi Lydick
This is a little cringey what's happening here. It was amazing how he came in and gave that impassioned speech about checks and balances, and then all of Congress gives him a standing ovation. And I'm like, bitch, you are the ones in charge of checks and balances. You are not upholding the balance.
Nicole Conlon
Everybody in Congress, like, yes. Somebody should do something about this.
Desi Lydick
Someone should do this is. He's onto something. Someone should look into checks and balances.
Nicole Conlon
Yeah. That is you.
Desi Lydick
It is insane.
Nicole Conlon
Yeah. It's crazy. It's crazy to have to be told by the king that we overthrew the country whose king we overthrew. Totally. Like, you guys need to. You're really not being fair to your citizens.
Desi Lydick
Yeah. He goes back to the uk, he's, like, really glad they're not our problem anymore. It was a good, good outcome.
Nicole Conlon
He came over and he was doing, like, a little standup routine.
Desi Lydick
Oh, I was impressed.
Nicole Conlon
He doesn't want to be the king. He wants to be like, you know Paula Poundstone. Yeah, he wants to be Paula Poundstone. No, he wants to be like Jimmy Carr.
Desi Lydick
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Nicole Conlon
Being the king is fun, but he wants to be, like, on a panel show weekly on the BBC.
Desi Lydick
Someone give this man a platform. Truly, I'd watch it.
Nicole Conlon
So thank you to King Charles for your dire warnings. I'm positive they won't be heated. But it's still nice to hear.
Desi Lydick
Still nice to hear.
Nicole Conlon
Yes. So that's a story out of Louisiana. And Louisiana gave us another L this week because the 5th U.S. circuit Court of Appeals, which is based in New Orleans, has restricted access to mifepristone, which is one of the most common means of abortion in the US Sometimes referred to as the abortion pill. And the way that they did it is by blocking the mailing of mifepristone. So now it's required that the abortion pill be distributed in person at clinics with people physically there.
Desi Lydick
Yeah. So I guess we can't be sending loose pills in the mail anymore. I don't know what I'm gonna get my grandma for her birthday. Thanks, Louisiana, right before Mother's Day.
Nicole Conlon
Yeah.
Desi Lydick
Um, yeah. This is horrific and not surprising. We kind of knew that this was going to be next on the docket, that they would hit this as well.
Nicole Conlon
Yes.
Desi Lydick
Meanwhile, like, by the way, erectile dysfunction pills are so Readily accessible. I feel like at this point they're on like an opt out system. It's like a West Elm catalog. They send you 10amonth and you have to call and say, stop sending these.
Nicole Conlon
I don't even remember subscribing to this. How am I getting this? How did I get all this? Just getting the little blue pill in the mail. Funny. What drives me crazy about this is that this in person ruling, like the arguments about it were about whether or not telehealth is adequate to treat a patient's condition. And they're forcing me to defend telehealth, a system I hate.
Desi Lydick
They don't make it easy.
Nicole Conlon
No. If you have an insurance plan that's like, you can pay a copay or for free, you could see a doctor on your iPad. I'm like, I'm not seeing the iPad, Doctor.
Desi Lydick
It's so. It's. The whole thing is so stressful. I mean, I don't mind. I appreciate the convenience of that. And if you're like on the road
Nicole Conlon
or something and I like twist my ankle and I can see my doctor, that's great.
Desi Lydick
I just am bad with technology. So to get into the portal and then be on the. And it's not. They don't ever use like Zoom or FaceTime, like it's some other.
Nicole Conlon
It's always a portal you can download.
Desi Lydick
Yeah. And it's a whole thing. And then I'm worried about being late and I'm sitting there and it's like, am I in the waiting room or am I in. And is she waiting for me? Am I waiting for. It's a whole. I feel your pain.
Nicole Conlon
Yeah, it's. It's. So, look, I will now defend telehealth to the death.
Desi Lydick
Hell yeah.
Nicole Conlon
It is clearly an important service that we need. But if I have to download one more portal. Yes. I'm gonna throw my phone into the ocean.
Desi Lydick
I understand that.
Nicole Conlon
I totally understand that. But there is some good news because the Supreme Court has put a temporary hold on this. So they are gonna review it. There is a chance that it won't, you know, stand. I don't. I'm super not a lawyer. I can't tell you what the legal terms are, Alan. But there's a chance that this won't last. And it has been overturned. So mifepristone is still available in Louisiana and across the country.
Desi Lydick
Maybe the Supreme Court took some advice from King Charles. Maybe those checks and balances really got through to them.
Nicole Conlon
Yes, yes. Let's hope so.
Desi Lydick
For this brief Moment.
Nicole Conlon
Yes. So for until we hear otherwise, on Saturday, recurring Daily show punchline, Spirit Airlines announced that it's suspending operations effective immediately.
Desi Lydick
Immediately.
Nicole Conlon
Like, right this second. While travelers were, like, at the airport ready to board their flights. Yes. And they were just like, we're not doing it anymore.
Desi Lydick
And in true Spirit Airlines fashion, they will stop operations mid flight on brand all the way to the end.
Nicole Conlon
You're halfway to Des Moines. They're like, get out. Yeah.
Desi Lydick
Eject. Aw, Spirit. Yeah, that's a bummer.
Nicole Conlon
It is. Especially because, like, there is look for all that we can make fun of Spirit. And we can, and we can, and we have. Nobody else was flying people to New Orleans for $35.
Desi Lydick
I mean, it's. You can't argue with those prices. And in today's economy.
Nicole Conlon
Yes. Truly.
Desi Lydick
Yeah. It was great for the consumer.
Nicole Conlon
I don't know if I would say great.
Desi Lydick
Okay, maybe not great.
Nicole Conlon
But it was available.
Desi Lydick
It was available. It was an airline.
Nicole Conlon
It certainly was. Mostly an airline.
Desi Lydick
Yes.
Nicole Conlon
And so I was like, okay, so if you were on a Spirit flight, like, what do you do? And apparently customers who book directly with Spirit using a credit or debit card will be automatically refunded. But if you purchase tickets through a third party like Expedia or whatever, then you have to deal with them. And Spirit's like, you're not our problem.
Desi Lydick
Wow.
Nicole Conlon
It's crazy. I'm such a tightly wound freak about travel. Same that I never book with a third party because too many times I've seen people have a last minute flight change and not be able to get customer service. And so for me, this is just me getting to be like, I told you. So this is.
Desi Lydick
The whole Spirit thing is very sad. It's unfortunate for consumers, but it is great for Frontier Airlines, who celebrated by canceling your flight.
Nicole Conlon
Yes, yes. No matter where you are, that's where you are forever now.
Desi Lydick
So who will our new punching bag be?
Nicole Conlon
I think Southwest. Okay, I've been thinking about it, because Southwest was just bought by a private equity company. And it's so funny to me because Southwest, I don't know if you've ever flown them, but of course I have. They have the weird, like, seating system where it's just like a cattle call and you don't get to reserve a seat, and it's chaos, pure chaos. And then now this private equity company bought them, and they're like, we're gonna get rid of the cattle call seating system. And everybody's like, I love the seating system. I love not knowing where My seat is. People are so mad over it.
Desi Lydick
There's a hyper competitiveness to the process of getting that a. You got it. You gotta, like, be right on the trigger. You gotta be first. And people get extremely competitive about it. I understand that.
Nicole Conlon
Yeah. So it's. I think, between like, that and whatever other changes private equity is going to make, I think it'll be Southwest.
Desi Lydick
That's a pretty good.
Nicole Conlon
Actually there was a Spirit pilot who. It was going to be his last trip, and he was flying home and he was retiring. He was like, this Spirit flight home is going to be my retirement flight. And then Spirit was like, we don't exist anymore. So he was like, okay. And he just booked himself a ticket on a Southwest flight just to go home as a passenger. And the Southwest crew found out, I think his son was also a pilot and, like, contacted Southwest, and the Southwest crew found out he didn't get to have his retirement flight. And so when they landed at the airport, there was, like, a big celebration for him, for his retirement.
Desi Lydick
That's very sweet.
Nicole Conlon
It's very sweet.
Desi Lydick
Did they have everyone on the plane applaud?
Nicole Conlon
They had everyone on the plane applaud. And then the pilots on the flight were like, he didn't even land it. I don't know why he's getting the applause, but I guess they did. I don't remember what it's called, but it's like a water cannon salute or something where, like, they set off water cannons and the plane drove through them.
Desi Lydick
Is that true?
Nicole Conlon
Yes.
Desi Lydick
They set off water cannons?
Nicole Conlon
Yes.
Desi Lydick
Are you sure that wasn't just, like, the plane ran into it at Newark because something went awry? I feel like that's something that would happen.
Nicole Conlon
There was a fire at the airport inadvertently. He was just like, I can't believe you guys did all this for me.
Desi Lydick
That's very sweet.
Nicole Conlon
It's very sweet. It's very nice that this guy still got to have, like, a retirement even though his company dissolved in the middle of his trip.
Desi Lydick
Yeah. Oh, God, there's. That's a beautiful silver lining. Okay, so who. So we have to decide who our punching bag is gonna be, you think?
Nicole Conlon
I think Southwest.
Desi Lydick
Southwest. I think maybe Frontier is a pretty good contender. So tell us in the comments, who should our punching bag be?
Nicole Conlon
Yes, tell us in the comments.
Desi Lydick
We'll count.
Nicole Conlon
Yeah. And then that'll be the new default Daily show bug. Default.
Desi Lydick
You get to help us write our show so we have less work to do. Thank you very much, love.
Nicole Conlon
Less work to do. So, yes, I'm sorry if you were on a spirit flight and you've become stranded, good luck getting home. But I like this transition. Speaking of stranded travelers, there's one traveler that I'm very excited to say is no longer stranded, and that is a humpback whale named Timmy.
Desi Lydick
Oh, Timmy.
Nicole Conlon
A juvenile humpback whale who has been stranded for several weeks off the coast of Germany. And they finally got him out. They got him out. And they've been trying for weeks. They tried. They untangled him from a net.
Desi Lydick
Wow.
Nicole Conlon
They've tried to guide him out with boats, like sheepdogs. They tried to dislodge him by using a big boat to, like, make waves to shake him loose. They got, like, backhoes and dug a big trench to, like, help push him out. And this is really funny. The whale made it away from the coast only to become stranded again almost immediately, which is.
Desi Lydick
Aw.
Nicole Conlon
Which, if you've ever had a pet of any kind, is like, you know, they get their foot, like, stuck in a box or something, and you dislodge them, and then immediately there's a new person.
Desi Lydick
Oh, no. Unfortunately, Timmy threw himself into a cave in Thailand. So we're kind of back to square one.
Nicole Conlon
Yeah, we gotta get Timmy out of that cave. But what happened is, I mean, these were, like, long. Like, long standing, well publicized efforts over a span of months. And then eventually, a couple of German millionaires teamed up and they funded the creation of, like, a giant barge that was, like, suspended between two ships. It was, like, half the size of a football field or something. And then they were able to use the barge to kind of lift Timmy up and, like, finally take him out to the deep ocean, where I. I guess he immediately, like, went under and then came up and, like, did a big, like, spray out of his blowhole as if to say thank you. And then he dove. Dove down and he was off to sea. Wow. Yeah.
Desi Lydick
That is not something you hear often. A heartwarming story out of Germany.
Nicole Conlon
It's nice.
Desi Lydick
That's so sweet.
Nicole Conlon
They've really turned things around over there. It's great. Yes. One thing that was funny, there's a whole New Yorker article about this that I lost my entire morning to reading. I'm obsessed with this story, but I guess so related to the Thai cave thing when the soccer team got stuck in the cave, and then, like, Elon Musk and other millionaires were. And billionaires were coming out with, like, crazy ideas for how to fix it. Apparently this same thing was happening with the whales, and there were a couple Weirdos. Wallace, who's a veterinarian, told me that another member of the rescue operation, who called himself the whale whisperer, insisted on being near the animal to form a spiritual connection with him. The whale whisperer was joined by, among others, a YouTuber who went by Danny First Class. Both the YouTuber and the Whale whisperer think they can talk to the whale. Wow. Which is so funny to imagine a group of like, very hard working. Like you've got like backhoe operators, you have ship captains, you have highly trained veterinarians, and then you have a guy who's like, I need to talk to the whale myself. I'm a YouTuber. I got this.
Desi Lydick
That track, that. That tracks, yeah.
Nicole Conlon
Okay, cool. Thanks for your help, man. We're gonna keep trying to push this 12 ton whale out of here.
Desi Lydick
I do appreciate that German billionaires are using their money for good there. That is what we should be doing here, truly. Instead, we're shutting down newspapers.
Nicole Conlon
And whenever I see a really rich person doing something like that, I'm like, the wrong people have money. Yes. If I were a billionaire, I would be amazing at it.
Desi Lydick
Yes, you would.
Nicole Conlon
I would be funding independent films. I would be quite. Creating animal rescues.
Desi Lydick
Of course you would. You would be Mackenzie Bezos.
Nicole Conlon
Thank you. Yes.
Desi Lydick
Yeah, she's doing it right. She's the only one literally doing it right.
Nicole Conlon
Doing it right. Yeah. It's crazy. So best wishes to Timmy, the German humpback whale who has been released back into the ocean. You have given us something to be happy about this week.
Desi Lydick
Thank God.

All right, let's look ahead to this week and what's coming up that you might be talking about on the show. And kind of the big thing that I'm thinking about for today is the Met Gala is tonight.
Desi Lydick
The Met Gala is tonight.
Nicole Conlon
I can't wait. The Met Gala traditionally is like an annual fundraiser that supports the Met Museum's Costume Institute. And so this has been going on, I mean, decades at this point, but now it's. It's become weirdly, it is still making money for the Met, but it now is like sort of its own, like, business and advertising operation. Oh, yeah. And one of the big controversies this year is that Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez are gonna be the co chairs.
Desi Lydick
Yes. What is the theme this year?
Nicole Conlon
It is income inequality.
Desi Lydick
Oh, no, sorry, you go.
Nicole Conlon
I mean the theme loosely. Every year, I think.
Desi Lydick
I think it's.
Nicole Conlon
Every year it's the same theme. I personally think that if Jeff Bezos is going to go to the Met Gala, he should have to wear clothes from Amazon.
Desi Lydick
Of course he should.
Nicole Conlon
That should be required.
Desi Lydick
That is. Of course he should. You gotta back it up.
Nicole Conlon
Wear a weird plastic shirt where one of the sleeves is like a little longer than the other. It's your business. You gotta stand by it.
Desi Lydick
Stand by it. Go all the way, man.
Nicole Conlon
All the way. Or they gotta start selling Prada on Amazon.
Desi Lydick
Yes.
Nicole Conlon
If that's. If he wants to wear that tuck, then he's gotta supply it on his website.
Desi Lydick
I do love that the Met Gala comes around and everyone suddenly turns into a fashion critic. Like, I'm sitting on my couch in sweats eating flaming hot Cheetos. Being like that drop waist bodice is all wrong. We don't know what we're talking about.
Nicole Conlon
But look, if I can judge somebody, I will. One thing that personally drives me a little crazy is when people don't dress to the theme, which by the year, the theme is costume art and the dress code is fashion is art, which can be interpreted in a lot of ways. But like, sometimes, like, I remember when there was the Americana theme and people came, like, in various Iterations of, like, the Statue of Liberty or historical figures or, like, things that represent Americana. And then some people just come in, like, a nice dress.
Desi Lydick
Play it safe. You can't play it safe at the Met. If you're gonna go, you gotta go all the way.
Nicole Conlon
Yes. That's how I feel. You know who kills it every time is Janelle Monae. She always looks totally incredible. And her outfits at the Met Gala are always so. She is gorgeous. So she can wear, like, a crazy outfit. Like, if I went to the Met Gala, I would dress to the theme, but I would be like, but I want to look pretty. But since Janelle Monae always looks pretty, she could be like, yeah, I'll wear a crazy, like, zoot suit or whatever. She looks amazing. But for. Fashion is art. I'm interested to see what they. How people play with it.
Desi Lydick
Yeah.
Nicole Conlon
Because there's a lot of, like, oh, I can't remember if it was Cavalli. I don't know. I'm so not a fashion person. But it is.
Desi Lydick
I'm already impressed. And, like, you already know 100% more than you. There was.
Nicole Conlon
There's a very famous dress that is, like, a Mondrian painting. And Mondrian is that artist who does, like the blocks of primary colors. And so I think there's probably gonna be a lot of that. I'm guessing somebody is gonna probably look like a statue.
Desi Lydick
Of course.
Nicole Conlon
But I'm really interested. There's so many, like, ways to make cool structural garments.
Desi Lydick
That part of it I get very excited about. The Bezos of it all really is throwing me for a loop.
Nicole Conlon
Absolutely.
Desi Lydick
But the fashion candy I get very excited about.
Nicole Conlon
Yeah.
Desi Lydick
We do kind of forget. We get so caught up in the pomp and circumstance of it all that we forget that this is actually a museum fundraiser. So I'm wondering if this is how we actually fund the Department of Education. Could we do it that way? Just have celebrities show up in, like, a fur and a bustle to Roosevelt Elementary?
Nicole Conlon
Truly, if we did that, I would be fine with it. If we did anything to, like, actually fund social programs. And some of it was just, like, continually throwing parties for these rich people. Fine. Come on. I'll take it.
Desi Lydick
Let's turn it in. We'll turn it into a whole thing.
Nicole Conlon
Yeah. Nobody has a reason to get dressed up anymore. So this will be an opportunity for rich people to get to show off the way too many clothes that they bought. And then also, maybe kids will get school supplies.
Desi Lydick
Yes. Plus, I have never been invited to the Met. Gala, but I feel like I might get invited to the education fundraiser. I could probably get an invite too.
Nicole Conlon
Tell you what, YouTube commenters, I want us to all start a campaign to get Desi to the Met Gala next year.
Desi Lydick
Sponsored by Elon Musk.
Nicole Conlon
Figure out the hashtag or whatever we have to do. We're gonna get Desi to the Met Gala next year.
Desi Lydick
Thank you for this.
Nicole Conlon
Thank you. But only if you wear something crazy for the theme.
Desi Lydick
Oh, are you kidding me?
Nicole Conlon
Okay, great.
Desi Lydick
You don't have to ask me twice.
Nicole Conlon
So we'll keep an eye on the Met Gala tonight. Whatever crazy updates come out of the regular news. I don't even want to bring anything up because it's like every night at 11pm I'm like, looking through the news and I'm like, well, tomorrow's show's gonna completely change completely. We'll see what happens in the news. The only other thing that I know for sure is coming up is Mother's Day. Oh, yeah, you're a mom. Do you have any plans?
Desi Lydick
I want to keep it simple. This year. I think I just want to sleep in, wake up late to a new administration, and that's all.
Nicole Conlon
That's what every moment simple.
Desi Lydick
Ask what every mom wants.
Nicole Conlon
Get your mom what she wants this year.
Desi Lydick
Yes, please.
Nicole Conlon
New administration.
Desi Lydick
That would be nice. That would be nice. No, I actually, my mother in law is in town this weekend and we're gonna go see the Devil Wears Prada.
Nicole Conlon
Oh, that's perfect.
Desi Lydick
So we're. We're watching Meryl.
Nicole Conlon
That'll be great. Yeah, everyone's mom.
Desi Lydick
Everyone's mom. Yes. Oh, if only, if only.

Nicole Conlon
All right, that brings us to our final segment of the podcast, which is our recommendations, things that we want to share with our audience. I'll go first this time because I have something that's sort of Mother's Mother's Day adjacent, and I always recommend this for, like, a movie to watch when you're visiting your parents and you're, like,
Desi Lydick
always looking for that.
Nicole Conlon
I need to put on something that is, like, Not. Not too racy or too, like, structurally confusing for them, but also something that I'm, like, vaguely interested in. And this is a documentary that came out maybe about 10 years ago, and it's called Tim's Vermeer.
Desi Lydick
Is this about the whale again?
Nicole Conlon
It is not about the whale again.
Desi Lydick
You are obsessed with this whale.
Nicole Conlon
It's not about the whale, I promise. Different Tim. It's called Tim's Vermeer, and it's about this guy who's, you know, maybe in his 50s or early 60s. He's independently wealthy. He lives in Texas, and for, like, a long time. There have been some art critics who have analyzed the paintings of Vermeer and been like, there's evidence that he may have been using, like, early camera technology to make these paintings. And this guy Tim, who lives in Texas, became independently wealthy because he made, like, a visual effects company. So this is something he's interested in. And he was like, I'm just gonna try to use my money to fully recreate Vermeer's studio in a warehouse in Texas, and I'm gonna see if I can recreate this Vermeer painting. And he does this over the span of, like, three or four years. He, like. He, like, goes to Amsterdam to, like, purchase authentic, like, props and stuff that Vermeer would have had in his studio. He learns how to speak Dutch. He, like. It's wild. And spoiler alert. Because the documentary is really about the journey, not the destination. He creates a painting that looks a lot like a Vermeer painting. It's really interesting. It's produced by Penn Jillette, so there's a lot of Penn Jillettes. Oh, interesting as well. This is when you're independently wealthy and you live in Texas. This is what you do when you're a millionaire.
Desi Lydick
Great way to spend time.
Nicole Conlon
Recreate Vermeer's studio. And you're like, yeah, I'm just gonna paint. And he has no painting experience or anything. So the fact that he's able to do this is, like, really pretty. Astounding.
Desi Lydick
That's incredible. And you watch this with your parents or.
Nicole Conlon
This is perfect. It's the perfect movie to watch with parents. So if you're visiting your mom for Mother's Day, or, like, my dad's birthday is coming up, I'll probably throw it on when we're home. This is, like, I cannot tell you what a perfect movie it is for parents.
Desi Lydick
Excellent recommendation. I saw something over the weekend that I do not recommend that you see with your parents. Highly recommend not seeing it. With your parents. There are a lot of dildo jokes.
Nicole Conlon
Awesome.
Desi Lydick
Well, just the right amount of dildo jokes for me, but too many if you were to watch with your parents. I saw Titanique over the weekend.
Nicole Conlon
Oh, I heard nothing but good things about it.
Desi Lydick
It is so funny.
Nicole Conlon
Is it? Well, you tell me about it.
Desi Lydick
Marlon Mindel stars in the show, also co wrote the show, and she's gonna be a guest this week. So I went. I had to go for research. But it is totally a show that I would have on my own, thoroughly enjoyed it. It is nothing but just pure ridiculous fun. So Marla plays Celine Dion, who has a very different interpretation of how the events played out on the Titanic as Celine Dion, who was there on that day, really funny.
Nicole Conlon
So it's kind of like an O. Mary funny alternate history.
Desi Lydick
Very much in the same vein as O Mary, for sure. And it's like a big, wonderful queer fever dream. It's just so fun.
Nicole Conlon
And it's a musical. And it's so fun.
Desi Lydick
It's a musical.
Nicole Conlon
Okay.
Desi Lydick
I guess the music is excellent. Like a jukebox.
Nicole Conlon
Great.
Desi Lydick
They use a lot of Celine songs. I don't know how they got them cleared, but they did.
Nicole Conlon
I mean, maybe they just wrote to her and she was like, have you seen Celine Dion is very, like, kind of funny and weird and you wouldn't know it. Cause she has the voice of an angel and makes like, you know, music your mom listens to. Yes. But did you see a few years ago, she for Christmas got like, spent fully just hours in a makeup chair to get made up like the Jim Carrey Grinch. No. And just walked around all day like that. And she, like does an impression where she sounds just like him, where she's like, am I just eating because I'm bored. Here we go. Yeah, this is. Look, there she is.
Desi Lydick
Ellen, can you play the video nerve of those.
Nicole Conlon
Who's inviting me down there on such short notice? Even if I wanted to go, my schedule wouldn't allow it. She's so weird.
Desi Lydick
So much. I would say quirky. Like, I always knew she was a little quirky. That is a new level that makes me love her so much. Oh, my God.
Nicole Conlon
Yeah, it's really funny. Okay, Titan shows.
Desi Lydick
Fantastic.
Nicole Conlon
Now you can see it for research. Is there a way that I could also have to see it for research?
Desi Lydick
I'm sure we could try to.
Nicole Conlon
And write it off on my taxes because it's for work.
Desi Lydick
It is worth a shot.
Nicole Conlon
Okay. All right. I will work on it. I'll call my accountant I'm gonna need
Desi Lydick
you to help me write questions.
Nicole Conlon
Thank you. You guys heard it. So it's a legitimate business expense.
Desi Lydick
Gotta go see it for me. Gotta go see it.
Nicole Conlon
Tell the IRS it's legit.
Desi Lydick
Yeah, if anyone's in New York, go see that. I highly. I highly recommend. So much fun.
Nicole Conlon

This lively episode of “The Precap” features Daily Show writer Nicole Conlon in conversation with this week’s host, Desi Lydick. Together, they dish on Desi’s surreal brush with Meryl Streep, Kentucky Derby history, the latest from the Supreme Court and Louisiana politics, the abrupt demise of Spirit Airlines, a whale rescue in Germany, and the spectacle of the Met Gala—with plenty of trademark wit and warmth. The episode wraps with entertainment recommendations suitable for your parents (or not).
“I am so an admirer. And before I could even finish my sentence, she goes, ‘Oh, I know who you are. I watch your show all the time.’ And I about, like, I don’t even remember anything that happened.” ([03:25])
This Precap episode is a whirlwind of pop culture, political satire, and heartfelt moments, packed with sharp humor and spirited camaraderie. The highlight reel includes Desi Lydick’s dream-come-true run-in with Meryl Streep, the triumphs and absurdities of Kentucky Derby weekend, biting political commentary on voting rights and reproductive health, and playful sidebars about fashion and stranded whales. The banter is always brisk, sometimes biting, but never mean—and always, unmistakably, The Daily Show.
