The World cup is underway and it's been incredible. On our podcast, the Away End with Daniel Alarcon and John Green, we're talking about the games that have delighted us, the teams that have inspired us, what we're loving and what surprised us all through the lens of being massive fans of the world's most beautiful game.
John Green
Daniel this tournament has been magical so far. There's so much to love, and I can hardly believe the drama that the group stage brought us. And now it's time for us to talk about the teams that are left as the field is whittled down to one World cup champion on July 19.

This is First America, the true story of how the United States came to be and how we got to this present moment. Listen to First America on the iHeartrad app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.
Dan Campbell
Hey, it's Alec Baldwin. This season on my podcast, here's the thing. I talked to composer Marc Shaiman.
Mangesha Together
It's about the hang.
Mike McDonald
It's the pleasure of hanging out with
Dan Patrick
the people that you're with.
Mike McDonald
You know, Rob and I was always a great hang.
Dan Campbell
And director Morgan Neville.
Daniel Alarcon
Film school teaches you all the wrong things about making documentary. What do you want to say? Documentary is all about your ear.
Mangesha Together
What do you hear?
Daniel Alarcon
I feel like my job is listen really, really hard.
Dan Campbell
Listen to. Here's the thing on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.
Dan Patrick
Paul Verze here and I want to talk to you about Paul's best podcast, Will Ferrell's Big Money Players Network and iHeartRadio. I sit down each week with a special guest and we discuss the absolute best of things.
Dan Campbell
Pete Davidson.
Kyle Hamilton
It's that and then there's everything else.
Dan Patrick
Dude. His whole life has sounded like the first drop of a roller coaster.
Mike McDonald
Mark Norman.
Dan Patrick
I mean, I can't even tell you, Paul, how crazy it was. It was saying, listen to Paul's best podcast on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. You are listening to the Dan Patrick show on Fox Sports Radio. Kyle Hamilton. He's all pro and a pro bowler and he plays for the Ravens. We got a chance to talk to him yesterday after he finished his practice round, and I asked him, what does the gallery say to him when he's playing?
Kyle Hamilton
Honestly, pat on the back a little bit. There is a lot of good shots from the gallery, which I appreciate it. Even if it wasn't a great shot. It was very positive.
Dan Patrick
But no football talk.
Kyle Hamilton
Not. Not a lot of football talk. There's some Steelers chirping for sure. A lot of Ravens out here, though, which is crazy to see. Like, it's still surreal seeing people in my jersey at this point.
Dan Patrick
But when you show up in Baltimore, are you told to hate the Steelers?
Kyle Hamilton
I. I think it's. It happens just by osmosis at a certain point. It's just. You see the pictures around the buildings. They're showing you videos here and there, and it's like, okay. And then you get into a game week, and you can feel the intensity kind of hiding a little bit.
Dan Patrick
Anybody come close to Pittsburgh that you despise?
Kyle Hamilton
Despise is a strong word.
Dan Patrick
Okay, well, is hate.
Kyle Hamilton
Hate might be stronger.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Kyle Hamilton
This last for a week.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Kyle Hamilton
Like, I mean, it's.
Dan Campbell
It's.
Kyle Hamilton
I feel like AFC north kind of has that whole notion just across the whole. All four teams. The Bengals, defensively, as a Ravens defense, have had our number since I've been here. Jamar and Joe, I feel like they always go for, like, record games against us, so it's always. That's like an extra chip on our shoulder going into games. We had a shutout against them this year, which felt good, but it's. It's all across the board. I mean, there's. Doesn't matter. Anybody's records. Somebody could be 11 and 2.
Dan Patrick
Like, Cleveland's going to give you grief.
Kyle Hamilton
Yeah. I mean, 11 and 2 versus 2 and 11. The parody in this division is crazy.
Dan Patrick
So we're talking to Kyle Hamilton, the Raven safety, three time Pro Bowler, two time. Okay. We got to do something about the Pro bowl designation.
Kyle Hamilton
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Okay. You can't be the fourth alternate and be listed as a Pro bowl player on your resume.
Kyle Hamilton
Fair.
Dan Patrick
Okay. So what I'm thinking is you have one team Pro Bowl. That's it. That's the honor. You're a Pro Bowler. I. Maybe there's asterisk for guys who were, you know, second or third team Pro bowl, but you can't be. We got to fill a roster. You know, we need to have Brett Hundley come in and be a quarterback here. I mean, no offense, but I'm just saying. Okay.
Mike McDonald
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Okay. What do you think?
Kyle Hamilton
Yeah. I mean, There's. It's obviously an honor to be a part of that, that I guess, fraternity of playing in Pro Bowl. And I know people have certain things to say and it's kind of lost its way over across the years. But I mean, it's still an honor at the end of the day. But I mean, it's fan, coaches, player vote. It's a way to get fans involved. And what I think needs to change is the fifth year options for players and incentives are attached to Pro Bowls and not all pros. Yeah, I feel like all pros definitely carry more weight. And then, I mean, if you think about it, fans are having like direct impact on how much money you're making, which is true and false. Obviously ticket sales translate to revenue translate the players getting paid. But at the same time, like fans shouldn't be able, I don't think to vote on your play depending whether or not like you get an. A bigger contract.
Dan Patrick
How do you feel about people knowing how much you make?
Kyle Hamilton
It's kind of weird for sure, especially when they bring it up. But obviously it's kind of taboo. But no matter what your profession is. But I mean, it's part of the job. It's par for the course.
Dan Patrick
But how do they bring. They're bringing it up in a negative way?
Kyle Hamilton
No, it's more of a. I guess. I mean, when I get it, it's like your privilege kind of way. But I mean, I didn't just come into that money. I mean, I kind of worked for it a little bit, I would think. I would think. But you know, it is what it is. There's worse problems.
Dan Patrick
And you're working on your degree from Notre Dame? I am, as we speak. You're working?
Kyle Hamilton
Yeah. Don't tell my professor that.
Dan Patrick
But how important is it to get that degree?
Kyle Hamilton
Super important. I think that's probably 60% of the reason I went there. You know, I almost went to uga. I'm an Atlanta kid, grew up hour from Athens.
Dan Patrick
And how did they close you at Notre Dame?
Kyle Hamilton
I really don't know. Looking back on it, it was cold, my dorm had no ac. It's far from home. But I think it's everything other than that. It's the people, it's the relationships, it's the alumni network, it's the pedigree, not only on the football field but off it. You know, you can be walking down the hall of your dorm and meet somebody whose dad has connection here and then you are good friends. And then, you know, 10 years when I'm Done playing football. I may have a good relationship with him and then, you know, I got a good job.
Dan Patrick
Oh, that alumni is so powerful.
Kyle Hamilton
Yeah, yeah.
Dan Patrick
Do you think Marcus Freeman does a party pump before he goes out for a game? A party pump like he.
Kyle Hamilton
Oh, oh, oh, no, I think, I mean from experience, he walks around like that.
Dan Patrick
Oh, yeah, yeah.
Kyle Hamilton
He's got, he's got the blown up arms and everything. Yeah, I know. He works out a good bit though.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, yeah.
Kyle Hamilton
It's not by accident.
Dan Patrick
Since you're a Notre Dame guy. Expansion. Do you care, do you care if they join a conference?
Kyle Hamilton
I don't want them to join a conference. It's kind of a, I mean, we're kind of stuck up how we are. Like, it's, it's. I mean, who, who really, what other college football programs don't can survive without a conference?
Dan Patrick
Like, but you had to embrace people hating Notre Dame.
Kyle Hamilton
Yeah, for sure. I love it. It's like Notre Dame's like Yankees, Cowboys, like it's, you know, popular teams that half the country hates, but half the country loves. And we're always going to have fans on the road wherever we go. And you know, I know there's some people out there that hear that and don't like it, but it is what it is.
Dan Patrick
Did you get to tackle Derrick Henry before he became a teammate?
Kyle Hamilton
Yeah, well, I tried. We played Tennessee in London. I actually only played one half of that game because I got kicked out and then I think I missed a tackle on him. So I, I almost, I almost tackled him, but other than that, I don't think so. I'm glad I don't have to anymore.
Dan Patrick
There's some people who make business decisions on Derek county, right?
Kyle Hamilton
Yeah. Yeah. You're playing the long game, but, but
Dan Patrick
how do you make a business decision? I'm, I'm going to act like I'm going to tackle him. Maybe go for the ankles, I'm guessing.
Kyle Hamilton
Yeah, I mean, it depends who you are. Like if you're 175 pound corner and he gets on the edge, it's like, try, do your best. But if you're a linebacker in the hole, like you kind of got to do what you got to do. Film's probably gonna not be fun, but you know, you gotta stick your neck out there.
Dan Patrick
Okay, but if I gave you the choice of trying to track down Lamar
Kyle Hamilton
or Derek, I'm glad I don't have to do either, honestly.
Dan Patrick
But just in case, if I had
Kyle Hamilton
hypothetical, like Lamar in the open field.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Kyle Hamilton
Or Derek in Open field.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Kyle Hamilton
I mean, this is a lose lose. I mean, I'd probably say Lamar just because, like, he might run out of bounds, he might slide or he might juke me. And then Derek, he's definitely gonna try to, like, run me over. Stiff army. So Lamar's probably the easier tackle.
Dan Patrick
He's not gonna hurt you, but he might hurt your ego.
Kyle Hamilton
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. But at least you're. You're on the field next.
Dan Patrick
Now Derek is gonna hurt you, hurt your ego as well.
Kyle Hamilton
Yeah, I've seen it a lot. I've seen a lot firsthand.
Dan Patrick
I don't think they've ever list anybody on the IR for ego, so they.
Kyle Hamilton
The IRA would be full
Dan Patrick
blinking again.
Kyle Hamilton
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Hey, great to see you.
Kyle Hamilton
Thank you.
Dan Patrick
Good luck with your degree. I appreciate it. And getting married.
Kyle Hamilton
Yes. Next April.
Dan Patrick
Is it going to be like a Taylor Swift, Travis Kelsey type thing?
Kyle Hamilton
No, not.
Mike McDonald
We're.
Kyle Hamilton
If they're a list, we're probably sitting around.
Dan Patrick
G list.
Kyle Hamilton
G list. G list. Which I'm proud to say, but Reese Dom, high school sweetheart. Shout out Reese. Whatever camera looking to. She went to South Carolina. Good girl. Getting married at the Four Seasons next year. So it'll be a good time.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Kyle Hamilton
I might have gave up too much.
Dan Patrick
I was gonna say.
Mike McDonald
Yeah.
Kyle Hamilton
Hopefully nobody just comes to the wedding. I didn't give a specific date.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Mike McDonald
Paul, open bar, oysters.
Dan Patrick
What are you doing?
Kyle Hamilton
Yeah, yeah, you guys can go. We can do this at the wedding.
Dan Patrick
I like it. Thanks for stopping by.
Kyle Hamilton
Thank you. I appreciate it.
Dan Patrick
That's Kyle Hamilton, the Raven safety. Yeah. All of a sudden he's given us the hotel and the coordinates there and when to show up. And I'm going.
Dan Campbell
I don't know.

But there's a lot of soccer yet to go and if the first few games of the round of 32 are any indication, anything is possible in the lead up to the final. We've got it covered from an ultra's perspective here on the Away end.

Mangesha Together
I'm Mangesha together and I'm back with a new season of the podcast Skyline Drive. This time I'm diving into a rabbit hole of peptides, organoids, blood boys, blue zones and brain replacement to try to understand what this longevity obsession is all about and what it really means to live forever for all of us. I learned about some rad science.
Dan Patrick
I can make a brain for you and then we can test what draw is the best for your brain as opposed to his brain.
Mangesha Together
Here are some hard truths.
Dan Patrick
I would expect Indians to age faster, but I did not expect it to

acceleration and get myself into a World of trouble.
Dan Patrick
I'd say probably start bone smashing. That doesn't work.
Akilah Hughes
Make it look more defined. They say it works.
Dan Patrick
I don't know.
Mangesha Together
Listen to Skyline Drive, how to Live Forever on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Akilah Hughes
Here's something that should not be as complicated as it is getting a racist statue removed. And here's something that should be a whole lot easier than it is getting a new one put up in its place.
Dan Campbell
As long as there's a politics of
Dan Patrick
race in America, there's going to be
Dan Campbell
a politics of remembering the Civil War.
Dan Patrick
To get to school, I had to go down Robert E. Lee Boulevard. Get to the grocery store. I had to go down Jefferson Davis Parkway. If you're a historian and you leave
Akilah Hughes
out half of what the history is, you're not doing your job. I'm Akilah Hughes, and Rebel Spirit Season 2 goes deep on both of those things. The fights, the politics, the people who won, and my personal campaign to add something to the Kentucky State House that's actually worth the wall space.
Dan Patrick
We are more than our bodies.
Mangesha Together
We contain essence. We contain spirit.
Dan Patrick
How do you represent that? They are just fueling a fire that is. Is really catching.
Akilah Hughes
You'll see what I mean. Listen to Rebel Spirit Season 2 on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Dan Patrick
How many years did Kevin OConnell play in the NFL? Paul? He was a quarterback at San Diego State. He was a Patriot, a Lion, a
Mike McDonald
Jet, a Dolphin, a Charger.
Dan Patrick
So he played five seasons with, like, seven different teams. All right. He is the Minnesota Vikings head coach. He stopped by yesterday after his practice round. Now, he won Coach of the year in 2024. And that's where I started the conversation by asking Coach where he keeps his award.
Dan Campbell
Kind of a replica Lombardi trophy after the 21 Super Bowl.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Dan Campbell
It's got a couple. Got a couple of those things.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Kyle Hamilton
All right.
Dan Patrick
But if I walk in the house, I don't know what you do for a living.
Dan Campbell
No, no, no.
Dan Patrick
Like, jerseys up in the living room, bedroom.
Dan Campbell
You got. You gotta. You gotta travel. You gotta either go to the basement or into the office to see. To see anything. I'm not. Look, I'm hoping the goal I think about every single day is bringing a Lombardi Trophy to the Minnesota Vikings. We have the greatest fans in the world and an unbelievable football history with the Vikings that I've really admired learning about. But we need a Lombardi Trophy, and it's the hardest thing to do in sports, but we, you know, our fans deserve it.
Dan Patrick
Were you ever picked up by a team and they were playing the team that you were on? Were they. Am I making up a story that I didn't know if you helped with information.
Dan Campbell
Oh, yeah, no. Yeah. Mark Burnell told me one time, you know, once they figure out you can't play, try to get two more years in. And that's a guy who played Trinity. That's a guy that. That's. And that's a guy that played. Played 20 years. And he's one. A very close friend of mine, actually the quarterback coach of the Detroit Lions. But I started here and, you know, you get released that first time I was with New England ended up, you know, in a roundabout way, getting to the New York jets and then we played, played the Patriots and a couple weeks later and, you know, I might not always been able to throw it from point A to point B, but I was going to take every last note. I was going to learn every possible thing I could being around the greatest coach of all time, the greatest quarterback of all time.
Dan Patrick
So they just downloaded some.
Dan Campbell
I had some information.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Dan Campbell
But I had to be smart about it. You couldn't give it all at once. You know, it was like, hey, I'm about 60, 70%. There's more where that came from.
Dan Patrick
What's your favorite Brady Store? Do you ever go out drinking with him?
Dan Campbell
No, No. I.
Dan Patrick
The early Brady years, I. I would say so.
Dan Campbell
I was. I came in post that 07 giants super bowl where they had won all the way up until that game in Arizona.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Dan Campbell
And then I came in. Then he actually got hurt that year. And then the following year was. Was 09. And I. I'm still. I've become, you know, pretty close with him just because, you know, now what he's doing. And obviously the best thing about him is he's. He had no reason in the world to be a great teammate to me. I wasn't around him very long. He's the greatest to ever live at what he does. And he was. He was a great teammate. He pushed everybody around that organization to get better and, you know, cares about what I'm doing now, and we stay in touch. And I think that's probably, you know, that's the best story of it all, that he even, you know, he even wants to, you know, carry on a friendship, you know, that makes him a great teammate.
Dan Patrick
How often did you get yelled at by Belichick?
Dan Campbell
You know, he. It was more Dan. I remember these super impactful moments, you know, because I think it's changed now. I haven't been there since, but they now just have a facility and they. The practice fields are right there. But you used to have to walk from the top shelf there outside Gillette Stadium, practice fields, through the stadium, through the indoor or through the tunnel, back to the everyday locker room. And I'll never forget two or three times, just these times where it was basically Bill and myself had somehow timed it up to walk back to the locker room. And it's not a short walk, it's, you know, so you, you got to make a decision. You can hang back or you're gonna maybe push past him, but a couple those times where, you know, he just pulls you aside and that was the greatness, you know, those one on one times of telling you. Exactly. And maybe it wasn't a fundamental thing, maybe it wasn't, you know, exactly something that was tied to one individual play from practice. But it was big picture. It was understanding, it was preparation, it was all these things that looking back on it now, I totally understand why, you know, he has been one of the best to ever do it for sure.
Dan Patrick
Help me understand an open competition at quarterback. Like, like it's open between J.J. mcCarthy and Kyler Murray.
Dan Campbell
I'm not, I'm not really familiar with a closed competition. So, you know, I've heard that, I've heard that, you know, everyone's like fascinated with, with that aspect of it. Here's what I would say, you know, you know, two players and really the goal going into this off season was to elevate the quarterback position. Because when we have a certain standard of play that we feel like we have multiple guys in that room that are capable of achieving that standard. The Minnesota Vikings win football games, and so the best way to achieve that is having a daily attempt to have guys push each other and not just always need the outside noise or not always need, you know, what the narratives may be. Let's, let's, let's roll the ball out there and let's, try to, you know, help the Minnesota Vikings get better. Kyler has come in and done a great job. JJ I think, has benefited from it. He had a really good spring. Carson Wentz is this veteran quarterback in the room that as a guy who's played seven or eight quarterbacks in four years, the two years we had our starter, you know, play the whole season, we won 13 and 14 games. So we want to try to get back to the standard of having the quarterback position be a driving force behind us, winning by doing their job, by hopefully getting. Activating the great players they get to play with. We got a great defense. Brian Flores has done an unbelievable job. If we can limit giving the football away and generate some explosives and get a run game going, which is. Although no one's really talking about that, that has been a major emphasis of this off season, both from a coaching staff standpoint and a player, a player development and offensive development standpoint. I'm excited about where we're at, but we won't really know until we, you know, go start calcifying, forging our team together that we're going to compete in the NFC North. It's very, very competitive division.
Dan Patrick
Paul, how many coaching cliches did. Did we get? Dan? We got six cliches in two minutes.
Dan Campbell
So let's. But let's. Let's run this.
Dan Patrick
Excuse me, coach.
Mike McDonald
Run out the balls for practice as a cliche?
Tab Ramos
Yeah.
Dan Campbell
Well, it's a better way to say we're going to start practice in three weeks.
Dan Patrick
We're going to take it one practice at a time. You didn't say that.
Dan Campbell
Well, we're not going to take it one practice.
Kyle Hamilton
You have to.
Dan Campbell
I think we actually go three. And then an off day, and then we go three. I mean, sports science. I mean, they have your cliches lapped at this point.
Dan Patrick
See, I think this is how you answer. You can ask me the question about the quarterbacking situation in Minnesota. Go ahead.
Dan Campbell
Would you make a comment if I asked you about an open competition?
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Dan Campbell
Dan, why don't you take me through how you have an open competition and what are your thoughts on it currently in Minnesota?
Dan Patrick
Well, you know what I think every day, every job, everything you do is an open competition. Why am I limiting that to my quarterback room? I'm not going to close it. They're going out there. They're competitors. Go out there and win the job. I'm not handing you the job. JJ didn't live up to expectations yet. Maybe he can learn from Kyler. Kyler, I think, is going to have an incredible year inside on that turf in that division, me coaching him up. And I think we're going to dominate the North. I. We're going to win it, and I think we're going to be a Super bowl favorite. Brian's done a great job with the defense, and I want to kick the Lions ass, the packers ass, and the Bears ass. Who's with me?
Kyle Hamilton
Let's go.
Dan Patrick
Let's go.
Dan Campbell
Go, man. Dan Campbell's gonna have fun with you here. No, but it's a, it's a, it's a great answer, but I think up until the point where, you know, you kind of hit the gas there about 70% through there. But what you said is very similar to what I said.
Dan Patrick
I like the guys. I like that you got Kyler, the
Dan Campbell
guys to, to push to find exactly what they can become as players, and it's okay to be uncomfortable doing that sometimes. Yes, these guys are. And they are. We are, we're in a, we are in a world where you find out very quickly that you have to be a grown up in, in the National Football League because that's what every Sunday, Monday, Thursday, whatever it is, is about. And we know that I, I, we know what we signed up for. These players know that I think they've handled it well, and I'm excited to see what it looks like. And I, we, we have a good plan in place to try to make sure we allow this thing to get to a place where we feel good about it, but also prepare the guy that's going to be our starter for the regular season.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, I think Kyler will do a good job as your starter,
Dan Campbell
But how
Dan Patrick
do we go Vikings? Go Vikings?
Dan Campbell
School.
Dan Patrick
See, I could be your script writer. I could help you be really colorful. You're too busy for it, and I'm gonna set you up for that next job 20 years from now when you want to get into TV.
Dan Campbell
There you go.
Dan Patrick
That's what I'll have you. I get you some quotes and they'll be like, man, is he colorful.
Dan Campbell
Man, is he good.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. No coaching cliches. Like, you're kind of the, you know, east coast version of Sean McVeigh.
Dan Campbell
East coast version?
Dan Patrick
Yeah. Well, Midwest, mid. Ish, West, East.
Dan Campbell
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Dan Campbell
No, I love Sean.
Dan Patrick
You think you could take him?
Dan Campbell
Not right now. No. He's, he's, he's gonna be quick and he's shifty and, and he's the. I think he lifts weights every day. I wish I could.
Dan Patrick
Low base. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Spends a little too much time on the ABs, right? He does. He does.
Dan Campbell
I love Sean McVeigh.
Dan Patrick
Who are you more concerned about, Dan Campbell or Sean McVeigh?
Dan Campbell
If I, if you gave me the script that you just read. Dan.
Dan Patrick
Dan Campbell. Great to see you.
Dan Campbell
Great.
Dan Patrick
Thanks for being a good sport.
Dan Campbell
No, of course.
Dan Patrick
Good luck with Kyler as your starter.
Dan Campbell
Appreciate you guys. Man.

The World cup is under wave and it's been incredible. On our podcast the Away End with Daniel Alarcon and John Green, we're talking about the games that have delighted us, the teams that have inspired us, what we're loving and what surprised us all through the lens of being massive fans of the world's most beautiful game.
John Green
Daniel, this tournament has been magical so far. The expanded field of teams has created some incredible matchups that have already made this World cup one to remember, and now things get even more exciting with the intensity of the knockout rounds as the field is whittled down to one World cup champion on July 19.
Daniel Alarcon
When you say it like that, I get a pain in my heart that the tournament is over, but there's a lot of soccer yet to go and if the first few games of the round of 32 are any indication, anything is possible in the lead up to the final. We've got it covered from an ultra's perspective here on the away end.

Dan Patrick
I can make a brain for you. And then we can test what drug is the best for your brain as opposed to his brain.
Mangesha Together
Here are some hard truths.
Dan Patrick
I would expect Indians to age faster, but I did not expect it to
John Green
be almost a four to five year
Mangesha Together
acceleration and get myself into a world of trouble.
Dan Patrick
I'd say probably start bone smashing. That doesn't work.
Akilah Hughes
To make it look more defined, they say it works.
Dan Patrick
I don't know.
Mangesha Together
Listen to Skyline, how to live Forever on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Akilah Hughes
Here's something that should not be as complicated as it is getting a racist statue removed. And here's something that should be a whole lot easier than it is getting a new one put up in its place.
Dan Campbell
As long as there's a politics of
Dan Patrick
race in America, there's gonna be a
Dan Campbell
politics of remembering the Civil War.
Dan Patrick
To get to school, I had to go down Robert E. Lee Boulevard, get to the grocery store, I had to go down Jefferson Davis Parkway. If you're an historian and you leave
Akilah Hughes
out half of what the history is, you're not doing your job. I'm Akilah Hughes and Rebel Spirit Season 2 goes deep on both of those things. The fights, the politics, the people who won, and my personal campaign to add something to the Kentucky State House that's actually worth the wall space.
Dan Patrick
We are more than our bodies.
Mangesha Together
We contain essence, we contain spirit.
Dan Patrick
How do you represent that? They are just fueling a fire that is really catching.
Akilah Hughes
You'll see what I mean. Listen to Rebel Spirit Season 2 on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Mike McDonald
Immediately after the game, they would ask for the ring. You're like, hey, man, there's a process here. You know, it takes a while. It's gonna be in June, but it's awesome. It's in hiding right now in a safe spot. We won't say where it is, but I didn't bring it with me. And my family's a little disappointed me for not bringing it.
Dan Patrick
But do you have any input on the design of it?
Mike McDonald
You don't want my input on the design. I mean, you started asking me for design tips that we're going in the wrong direction. But we had a great process, you know, led by our president, Chuck Arnold, and Jody was a great part of it. And the players had a lot of saying, you know, we're going to those guys, guys, and I'm really, I'm really happy. It's pretty. It's Pretty awesome.
Dan Patrick
But see what I think they. I brought this up years ago. You can have that big ring, but you don't want to wear the big ring. How about a ring inside the ring so then you could wear it out?
Mike McDonald
You need to talk to John Schneider because he was pushing for that idea. That was going to be part of the thing where you take it off and there's another ring inside.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. Because you would wear it got a
Mike McDonald
little wacky, but that was, that was actually going to happen. It got down to like the. Down to the one yard line, no pun intended. But we couldn't, we didn't pull it off.
Dan Patrick
How often have you looked at the super bowl tape?
Mike McDonald
And you're not gonna believe this. I've watched it once on tape during the draft process and we still haven't watched the TV copy. So I don't know why. I don't know what's wrong with me or whatever. But we just, we. We haven't.
Dan Patrick
So are you worried there's a different ending here?
Mike McDonald
There is like, I don't know, there's like a. Just no, no pull to do it yet. I think we'll do it before camp starts. But I actually, I'm interested to watch the commercials. I know, I know that's kind of a weird thing, but it's like. To watch like how the flow of the game with commercials and that'll be cool. So.
Dan Patrick
But what would you glean from watching the Super Bowl? Like what would you take away?
Mike McDonald
Like the TV copy?
Dan Patrick
Yeah. That could help you.
Mike McDonald
Well, it's going to be tricky because we start with the Patriots, you know, so I'm like a, I'm a psycho data guy where I need numbers and tendencies and you know, I need ah, you know, like what's, what's the data telling me all the time? So now there's no data. So it's, you know, what's going to be their counter to what we did, you know, how do we kind of take the next, you know, you know, evolution of what we did and like where we at scheme wise. So it's tricky. Those first games of the year are, are tricky when it comes to tendencies and how you call games, how you build games plans.
Dan Patrick
When did you lean on analytics? When. When did you go all in and say this?
Mike McDonald
Well, it always seemed that was just this made sense. It's like why wouldn't we use the best information out there? You know, you don't have to do it, but why would you be scared about things that are going to possibly Help you, so why wouldn't you just lean into it?
Dan Patrick
But if they have the analytics on you, like, don't. Don't you cancel each other out if you both have the same.
Mike McDonald
Well, sometimes I turn into Vince Vaughn and Wedding Crashers. Like, am I interested in.
Dan Patrick
Interested?
Mike McDonald
No, I'm not interested. Maybe I am interested. She's interested. You know, so that's. That's what's going on in my mind probably 24 7. It's not a good place to be. But I think. I think, like, you're just starting with data. And then to me, it's like, well, what's the best decision for the team? Is that it? Is that where the gut goes? You know, am I going off my gut here? Is it. How's the game going? You know, this. But, like, people that fight it, I just don't understand. Like, just relax. Why are you fighting? Not. You don't have to do what the number says.
Dan Patrick
But. But how much is gut? How much was the super bowl gut? Doing something or based on analytics?
Mike McDonald
I don't. I don't think. I don't think analytics drives our decisions. I think. I think they support our decisions. And really, it's a starting point on a lot of things. But you have to go off the tape, and you have to understand, like, how teams operate, and you have to have a great feel for your team. You know, when you're building game plans, there's not necessarily design, just doing it against the team you're playing. You're also trying to put your guys in position to do stuff that they can do well. And so. And then in game, you know, like, we're deciding on fourth down, and you have a game plan going to the game on how we want to handle all those situations. Then, you know, you have to be able to adjust.
Dan Patrick
He's Mike McDonald, head coach of the defending super bowl champion Seattle Seahawks. How often do people think you're Michael McDonald, the singer?
Mike McDonald
Every substitute teacher I ever had, without an exception, they would get to my name on the roll call list, Michael McDonald's, and I'd raise my hand. I love your music, Doobie brother. I'm like, all right, okay. Like, I've heard that. It's like, it's worse than old McDonald's.
Dan Patrick
Oh, you get that one, too.
Mike McDonald
Well, that, that. That got old pretty quickly. But the. The Michael McDonald singer thing, just every. It was every substitute teacher. Wasn't for, you know, my entire, you know, school career. But it's all good.
Dan Patrick
Who did you seek advice from going into The Super Bowl. That might surprise me.
Mike McDonald
Well, I wouldn't have surprised. I called John Harbaugh and I talked. He was great. Probably can't mention one guy that really. That really helped us out, that had some conflict of interest.
Dan Patrick
Can we guess?
Mike McDonald
Sure. I don't know if I'm going to tell you, but go ahead.
Dan Patrick
Bill Belichick.
Mike McDonald
I'm not that cool. Oh, yeah, no, he wouldn't.
Dan Patrick
You wouldn't have a phone call?
Mike McDonald
I've had a beer with. With Coach Belichick. And that was. That was a pretty cool. That was a pretty cool day.
Dan Patrick
Who else would we guess? Kyle Shanahan?
Mike McDonald
No, Kyle. No. But a lot of it was like, hey, there's a lot of. I think one of the biggest themes of last year, that we changed from year one to year two was like, we. We need to stick to who we are outside the circumstance. But the super bowl is different. So you do have to, like, concede that the process is different throughout the super. Like the media and, you know, there's the things like halftime, pre game and stuff like that, but that's the way we framed it to our team. And frankly, for me, for a guy that hasn't been to the super bowl, it simplified it. You know, it simplified things. It took pressure off you of that. You had to do everything right.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Mike McDonald
You know, and you got to be perfect all week. It's like, no, just relax, take a deep breath. Let's go be us. You know, different setting, but let's just go be us and, you know, not worry about all the extra stuff.
Dan Patrick
What'd you talk to Belichick about when you had your beer?
Mike McDonald
It was a. He was. He was. His son was coaching at Washington. So we did the coaches clinic and I got the history of the NFL through Bill Belichick's eyes. And that was really cool. That was awesome. I was just sitting there like, you know, tell me more.
Dan Patrick
You don't want the beer to end?
Mike McDonald
It was a couple beers. It wasn't more than one. It was more than one.
Dan Patrick
But do you feel like you're a Super bowl winning coach? I don't. Like, I don't know. When reality sets in for something as big as it is and how you're now viewed.
Mike McDonald
I'm not used to it. It's. It doesn't. Honestly, in all. I mean, I'm not. Not just like, it doesn't feel like it. I just. Because I don't. I don't feel like I've changed.
Dan Patrick
But people will change around you because
Mike McDonald
I Think you got to be aware of that. But it's, it's cool to meet, like, people out here, and you're like, that they know who we are and they know our team, and you know that we affected them in, like, some way, which is really cool. So that, that's probably, like, the, that's a really cool, like, byproduct of it, but I don't feel any different. You know, I still have a year
Dan Patrick
and a half old son that he doesn't know anything.
Mike McDonald
Yeah. I got to make sure his diapers changed and he's fed and he's not pissed off. He was on, we were on. I forget what hole was, but he came out, ran through the ropes, grabbed my driver as we were walking down the fairway, and then I needed it back, so I was, I didn't want to be the guy to grab it from him. And so I think, I think Steph, my wife, ended up taking it from. And he, like, you could hear this, his cry, like, two, two holes away, just losing his mind. I felt bad for a second, but now it's great. It's really cool to see him.
Dan Patrick
Could you change a diaper before the play clock expires?
Mike McDonald
I've gotten pretty good.
Dan Patrick
Really good.
Mike McDonald
Yeah. Yeah, it's. But it's also dependent on his, his, like, his attitude. So you need it.
Dan Patrick
Bring out the baby in the diapers here. We're gonna have Koji.
Mike McDonald
Is it like, Is it a full,
Dan Patrick
like, did we, did he blow out?
Mike McDonald
Or is it like, is it a solid? Is it a solid? You know, how different types of, you know, you got to evaluate it.
Dan Patrick
But having that escape. How important is it when he doesn't know anything?
Mike McDonald
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
And you could go home. You don't have to answer any questions.
Mike McDonald
Well, I get to spend more than 30 minutes now, you know, with him. That was, that was a story last year.
Dan Patrick
But are you a grinder that you're going to be there all day, all night?
Mike McDonald
No, I can't.
Dan Patrick
I, I, I. Quality of life, man.
Mike McDonald
I just, like, I can't. I tell the team, like, if I'm making decisions after 9pm like, we're in trouble, you know, so. And we get a workout in, in the morning with our crew, and then we, and then we put in a great day's work, and then we go home, you know? Now, like, there's a process you have to abide by that we have to do, but to spend all the time, like, with our family, this up, like this offseason. Now, Jax, he's a year and a half. So, you know, he's got a personality and attitude and, you know, he's got some interests and we're trying to teach him how to talk and it's just. It's a. It's so much fun right now.
Dan Campbell
It's.
Mike McDonald
It's just.
Dan Patrick
It's really awesome. Congratulations. Thanks for stopping by and. And I'll go back to quality of life after talking to Dick Vermeil many times about he sleep at the office and Tony Dungy said that Chuck Knowles said, go home to your families. Yeah, that was important and it is important. So quality of life, man, and being there when with your kids, there's no substitute. I did second shift at ESPN for 15 years when my kids were all born. And you miss out on so much. Don't miss out on those little things because you can never get them back.
Mike McDonald
I appreciate that. The year and a half's gone by. Really.
Dan Patrick
Yes.
Mike McDonald
We got another on the way, so. Oh, be fun. Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Do you know what?
Mike McDonald
You're having a little baby girl.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Mike McDonald
In December.
Dan Patrick
Samantha, after Sam Darnold.
Mike McDonald
We do have a name, but we'll. We'll tell her.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, that's. Yeah. Don't tell. Never ever tell.
Mike McDonald
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Thank you, coach.
Mike McDonald
All right.
Dan Patrick
Thanks for stopping by.
Mike McDonald
Thanks, guys.
Dan Patrick
Let's. Mike McDonald, Seahawks head coach.
