And we spoke to Rebecca Lowe earlier this morning before she was getting on her flight. She did a great job as the host of the World cup, and I started our conversation by asking her which country she feels like today based off her performance in that role.

That's a hard question. You know, did okay in the group stage, held my own in the knockouts. That's where we'll go.

[Dan Patrick]

Are you like. Are you like Belgium or oh crap, I don't.

[Rebecca Lowe]

That is difficult. We. We can Do Belgium. Yeah, but then they knocked out the United States and that would make me unpopular. So no, we're not doing Belgium. I mean should we do England? Just got to the semis and. No, no, you're right, let's not do England. No, no. I mean, I don't know.

[Matt Damon]

I'm not answering that. I've never.

[Rebecca Lowe]

Can I just say, Dan, the morning after World cup final you are straight in with the hardest question. That's why I love you.

[Dan Patrick]

That might be the most dominating one to nothing match I've ever seen.

[Rebecca Lowe]

Yeah, that'll be about right.

[Dan Patrick]

Like it was so one sided but it was so close. How do you explain what happened yesterday?

[Rebecca Lowe]

That's football. That is football. And at one point I was a bit concerned actually for the watching millions who probably don't watch a game of football until the World cup final comes around because it was Neil Nil going into extra time. And I was thinking, come on guys, this is not a good advert for the game but I keep telling everybody is the greatest in the world. And I also thought we've seen this movie before. I think I said that at some point on the broadcast where Spain have all that possession and all those shots and Argentina do nothing and then they, then they win it, which is like one of the only sports you could actually perform that badly in and then win the World Cup. But luckily that didn't happen because that wouldn't have been right. It was one sided. But sometimes it takes, it takes a while.

[Dan Patrick]

Dan.

[Rebecca Lowe]

Football is a game of patience as much as anything else. So yeah, in the end, as the guy said on the show, football won, which is the right thing. Spain were the right winners, they were the better team. But yeah, it wasn't the greatest final of all time, that's for certain. But it's, it's okay. We had the greatest World Cup. We can't have everything.

[Dan Patrick]

Jack, is that the end of Messi on this stage?

[Rebecca Lowe]

I think so. I, Although, although, although coming into this World cup people had said, well he's gone to the Major League Soccer and to retire so he's not going to be at the level when it comes to the World Cup. And we were all proven hugely wrong. So can you bet against this guy? I mean 39, it'll. He'll be 42 by the time the next one starts off the bench. Maybe little cheeky little last 10 minutes in every game I take him, probably would take him at 42, 43.

[Dan Patrick]

I don't want to say it's, it's Reacting because it just happened. But he seemed his age yesterday. But I, but I have to give Spain all the credit with that, that they probably make everybody look a little slower and a little older and tired.

[Rebecca Lowe]

Yeah, I think so. But he didn't seem his age just a week ago.

[Dan Patrick]

Yeah.

[Rebecca Lowe]

So, you know, I do think you're right. We have to give Spain the credit for that. I did see still flashes of genius. You know, I've only, I haven't seen Messi play live that many times just because my career has always been Premier League and England based. I still saw moments that I just thought, this guy's a joke. Still, he's just a joke. And then the rest of the time just watching him walk around, I mean, it's, it's actually he's creating a whole, a whole new type way of playing football that only the top 0.0, not 1% can play. So there were still flashes for me, he needs a good rest, obviously now, but I, I, I wouldn't bet against him for anything, Dan. Honestly, don't.

[Dan Patrick]

What about the ceremony where Argentina has their back to Spain as they're celebrating?

[Rebecca Lowe]

I don't like that. I don't like that one bit. And I would be amazed if any other country had done that. I'm really disappointed in them. I'm kind of disappointed that Messi did that too. I mean, he's a classy guy. That wasn't for me, as a group of players. That wasn't classy. That wasn't classy one bit. That was disappointing. That sets a bad example. But, you know, I don't know. That's, that's sometimes the way that Argentina play like they are, they are an unusual. Sorry, that's rather, I'm in an airport, so there's people walking by with suitcases. Sorry if you can't hear me, but it's an un, it's an, it's a different way of approaching a game, let's just put it that way.

We're talking to Rebecca Lowe, the host of the Premier League and of course the World cup host on Fox. If you were going to offer encouraging words for the United States about soccer for 2030, go ahead.

[Rebecca Lowe]

I think they made progress. I think they made progress. Now, who will the manager be is the big question as to just how many encouraging words I can offer them. If they can hold on to Maurizio Pochettino, I believe that would be the right thing. Mice. My sense is that they won't. My sense is that he will, he will leave and return to the club game. Plenty of really good players. This country continues to produce really good players. The other most encouraging thing out of this World cup is that the country fell in love with them. And yes, the Belgium game was a massive letdown. Of that there is no doubt. But I think when the dust has settled, this country will look back on the World Cup 2026, Dan, and they will still love that team for all that they did in the build up to that Belgium team, into that Belgium game. So I think tons of credit in the bank. The only way is up. Let's get our heads together though and try and make some good decisions in this country where football's concerned. We need a few decisions to start happening so that everyone is and we're not working apart.

[Dan Patrick]

I also think it was important for us to host it and do a great job hosting. Therefore I think we more people here in the United States got to witness it. And there are certain, certain sports you have to see in person. I think soccer is a sport see in person, hockey is a sport see in person. And then I think you take away a little bit more of the feeling, the atmosphere. So I think with that building on that probably helped, you know, to a certain degree.

[Rebecca Lowe]

Yeah, I think two things on that. One, isn't it funny when you look back to six, seven weeks ago when everybody was like, oh, it's going to be a disaster. There's going to be empty seats and you're like, okay, we hear this before every Olympics, Dan, you and I were in Sochi. We heard it before Sochi in 2014, we heard it before Rio. Like we hear it before every major tournament. Everything is pretty much nearly always okay. And this one was more than okay. But the other thing is, it's not just about 2030. The kids that you're talking about that have watched this World cup and maybe not even attended a game because I know what you mean about seeing soccer in person. But I also think there was something about this World cup with the time zones, the way that Fox did it, it kind of encapsulated everything and it gave people magic even if they weren't in the stadium. And I remember as a nine year old watching the 1990 World cup and falling in love with the game in that summer of 1990. And I, I getting chills thinking about it. But I want summer of 2026 and I think it will to have affected a whole generation of say 10, 12 year old take this forward, not just into 2030, but to beyond as well. And I really think this summer's changed a lot, which, thank goodness, that was the intention, I think has done it.

Zlatan surprised you a little bit when he said, this is it, I'm done with doing studio show.

[Rebecca Lowe]

No, because he had told me a couple of times that he would be done. I said to him afterwards, though, what about the return of Zlatan? That's got a whole nother great branding situation. I don't put anything past that guy, by the way. He's the greatest. And what an absolute honor to stand next to him for six weeks. I mean, this guy is. I've never met anyone like him. I'll never meet anyone like him again. I adore him. He's the best.

[Dan Patrick]

I've avoided bringing up England.

[Rebecca Lowe]

Thank you, Dan. No, I do appreciate that you shown some, you've shown some sympathy there for me on this. Eight o' clock in the morning, Monday morning after the World Cup. I, I, I'm still hurting, but, you know, actually with every passing hour, I get more angry at the way we went out, but I get more proud of what we did achieve, which is the best finish since 1966. So, you know, have to be happy with that.

[Dan Patrick]

Dan, did your son cry when he cried with England, did he cry with the United States?

[Rebecca Lowe]

He didn't. Is that okay? I feel, I feel like maybe he should have done. He cried with England, definitely. He was very disappointed with the United States. He was, he was. But, but I think with England it was, it was, it was a little closer, you know, semi final. And he knows that we're both, you know, Mum and Dad are just obsessed with England and he's, you know, I think he gets that a little bit more. One day he might cry with the US One day.

I picked England to win.

[Rebecca Lowe]

Did you really, Dan? You didn't tell me that.

[Dan Patrick]

I didn't want to get your hopes up.

[Rebecca Lowe]

Your thoughts?

[Dan Patrick]

No. You know, I love Harry Kane.

[Rebecca Lowe]

Oh, what a legend, by the way. You've loved him, you, Harry Kane, for blooming years. To be fair, you were a ground floor investor on Harry Kane.

[Dan Patrick]

Yes. Yes. I thought that this was a different England team.

[Rebecca Lowe]

Yeah, it was different. And that's why I'm, I'm growing in love with them. Every passing day that goes by after, after them being knocked out because they were likable. They seem to like each other, which often hasn't been the case with England squads. They're often very sort of divided by who, which team they play for. Domestically, this team was very united and very likable and I Gave everything. I was so proud, honestly. So, so proud.

[Dan Patrick]

Yeah, it's difficult when you're hosting, but you have an emotional. But you still got to be a professional or at least try to be. But there's certain things you can't overcome.

[Rebecca Lowe]

I gotta tell you, at one point yesterday, the build up to the World cup final, I did have a moment to think maybe the silver lining here is England aren't in the final because the, the personal investment into that semi final was very, very, very difficult when we went out to Argentina. You're right. You have to be professional. There's no question about it. But that was. I've never experienced that sort of full of different emotions that I had on the semi final when England went out. So had it been the final and had England lost or even, quite frankly, had they won, you might not have seen me for the dust. I mean, I might not have even been on that platform after, after the final whistle went. So that actually in a funny way kind of worked out personally for me that England weren't in it because that would have been hard.

[Dan Patrick]

Yeah, but you got the third place. Third place, yes.

[Rebecca Lowe]

We love third place. I mean, I'm not really a third place person. It's not like the Olympics for me, those bronze medals. I'm not sure we could be giving out bronze. Med. It's better to win it than lose it.

Right?

Third's better than fourth. We'll take it.

Yes, absolutely. Do they raise a banner somewhere in England?

Drew Brees. He'll be inducted into the Pro Football hall of Fame coming up on August 8th, and he's joining us on behalf of Nephi. He'll tell us about that coming up. Who helped you write your speech?

[Drew Brees]

You know what? I've probably written about 10 speeches and continue to tweak it. You know, honestly, I feel like it's something I've been working on for about five years now. I'm kind of a voracious note taker. So, you know, whenever I listen to a podcast or read an article or just hear a quote that's meaningful or that, you know, causes me to have a reflection about something, I'll just. I'll journal it down. And so I've just got pages and pages of notes that basically is. Is going to become my hall of Fame speech.

[Dan Patrick]

Do you have a time element attached to this, of course, 10 minutes.

[Drew Brees]

Yeah, I mean, that's the hard part is it's, it's, you know, they give you, you know, what, six to eight minutes. How are you supposed to summarize, you know, a 20 year career, NFL career in, in six to eight minutes? It's really hard. You know, it's impossible to thank everybody you want to thank. And I think you're also trying to make it entertaining for the people that are there because there's a lot of people sitting in the hot sun, you know, in Canton, Ohio, there to watch you and many others, you know, so you don't want them suffering out there. You want to give them something to, you know, laugh about, cry about and, and certainly be able to walk down memory lane with you.

[Dan Patrick]

We last hour had the guy who is the field director, he, he, Nick Pappas, he takes care of the grass and the turf. Quality control. Worst football field you ever played on. And the NFL was where what was the worst?

[Drew Brees]

Well, it was, it was more so the conditions. I again, you know, you're kind of going through pictures and different things of, you know, during this hall of Fame process. And there was a game in 2005 in Kansas City where it was, it was basically torrential rainstorm, and so Arrowhead Stadium became literally a mud pit. I mean, it was like six inches of mud. I remember Jared Allen was a young player and he kind of got after us that game and. But I remember seeing pictures and literally like, you could hardly see the, the, the Charger bolt on my helmet. This one, I was playing for the Chargers. It was just mud, mud on the face, mud all over my hands. I'm like, how are you throwing the ball or even getting a snap? Those were some of the worst conditions and worst field conditions based on the elements, obviously.

[Dan Patrick]

But if I took a vote with the players. You want to play on a grass field or field? Turf?

[Drew Brees]

Well, 1,000% grass. And that's what was interesting about this World Cup. Is it? Is it? You know, I went and saw Spain and France play in, you know, Texas Stadium on grass. It's like the minute you walk in the dome there, you could smell the grass. And I mean, it just looked like the most unbelievable playing surface. And I mean, look, that's what guys want to play on. Certainly the statistics would show you, you know, reduced chance of injury and just better on the joints and the body and everything, but it's just the way football is meant to be played.

[Dan Patrick]

Did you dread training camp?

[Drew Brees]

I loved it. I loved it. Now look I'm not going through the abuse that a lot of, you know, other positions are, you know, with the physicality of it. But I loved it from the perspective of watching the team come together. And, you know, you've gone through the off season where you've tried to make these strides, you know, in regards to strength and conditioning and, you know, just a bit of time with, with the new, the new guys, the free agents, the draft picks. But then this is really the time where you start stacking the bricks to get ready for the season, for week one. And it's like, it's a race. It's a race, race to see how good you can be by week one. And I just, I. I just loved, I mean, the things that you miss about the game now it's the locker room, and it's the feeling on game day when you run out of the tunnel after all that preparation is behind you and just feel invincible, you know, with ultimate confidence run on the field. But that time in the locker room was, you know, that's where you were building those bonds and that brotherhood, you know, and the greatest teams I was ever part of were the ones that loved each other the most. And that's where those. That's where those moments were fortified.

[Dan Patrick]

Did you get hazed?

[Drew Brees]

You know, I mean, I did all the stuff I was supposed to do as a rookie, you know, to avoid that. I think it's the guys that, that choose to. To fight that a little bit that, you know, it maybe becomes a little bit more difficult for, you know, in most cases, pretty, pretty innocent. It's like, hey, rookie, get my coffee, get me a donut, get my breakfast, clean that up, carry my pads, that kind of stuff. Now, there was one guy in particular who chose not to perform those duties that rookies are supposed to. And so they, during training camp, they took his car keys and they wrapped them in athletic training tape like that you tape your ankles with, right to the point where it was like the size of a volleyball, and they dropped it in the cold tub and it sunk to the bottom of the cold tub. So if he wanted his keys to drive to the team meeting, which was at the, you know, the hotel down the street, he was going to have to dive into the cold tub, unwrap his car keys in order to get there. Lesson, lesson learned.

[Dan Patrick]

You want to tell us who it was?

[Drew Brees]

Well, it was a young. It was a young receiver, so I can promise you he. He didn't make that same mistake.

[Dan Patrick]

Okay.

[Drew Brees]

Are these the things that you do with the Guys around the. Off. Around the.

[Dan Patrick]

No, no, no, I don't. I don't. I didn't haze anybody in the. Man that's.

[Drew Brees]

Didn't have a rite of passage of some kind.

[Dan Patrick]

A pie to the face maybe. But I remember somebody telling me somebody got tied up naked to a goalpost, a goal post.

[Drew Brees]

Yeah, that happened in college.

[Dan Patrick]

In college. Not to you.

[Drew Brees]

Not to me. Not to me.

[Dan Patrick]

Damn. Yeah.

[Drew Brees]

The good old days, the 90s.

[Dan Patrick]

Yeah. You can't get away with any.

[Drew Brees]

You get away with that stuff, do you.

[Dan Patrick]

I don't know if we're doing this with quarterbacks yet, but we're going to do it with starting pitchers in baseball where we have to kind of alter what the hall of Fame numbers are because these starting pitchers now aren't going to have complete games. They don't go past six innings. I don't know if we get to the point where quarterback numbers. If you get to this level, you're a Hall of Famer or you get. I don't know. It feels like the criteria. I don't know if it's changing yet because Everybody's throwing for 40 and $50,000 yards here. It feels like it's, you know, everybody's got that opportunity. If you're playing 10 to 15 years.

[Drew Brees]

Yeah, it's. It's not. It's not apples to apples, right? I mean, if you compare. If you compare the statistics of any position now with what it was 40 years ago, it's quite a bit different, you know, but the game has changed, the style of play has changed. Here's what I think is kind of interesting that's happening with quarterbacks, actually, is that, you know, maybe the touchdowns are going up, but I think the overall yardage is going down a little bit. And I attribute that to the new kickoff rules. You know, the starting field position is actually 10 yards better now than it used to be because of the new kickoff rules. And so what does that mean? That means you have 10 fewer yards to go on a drive. Well, if you average 10 yards or 10 possessions a game, that's roughly 100 less yards that you're having to go. Well, just subtract that, you know, from the overall yardage now, it's going to result in more points, potentially some more touchdown passes. But I think if you look at the statistics, even with 17 games now, you know, guys aren't throwing for the same number of yards that, you know, 10 years ago we were. I don't know where the touchdowns are, but certainly, you know, teams are averaging in the, you know, mid to low 30s, probably more teams than normal. So the point, the number of points goes up. So I don't know, every little rule change has maybe some unintended consequences as you start looking at it play out.

[Dan Patrick]

And also the return of the running back.

[Drew Brees]

Well, yeah, I mean, look, I think the, there's ebbs and flows, right. I think what, what every team finds out, especially, you know, in some cases the hard way, is that, you know, the run game establishes everything and sets up everything for an NFL offense. I mean, I would maybe point to the Philadelphia Eagles. This, you know, they made that, that made that great super bowl run, you know, with Saquon Barkley. And the compliment of Jalen hurts being able to you. I mean, they just have so much variety with what they have with two really effective runners back there. But it seemed like they kind of abandoned the past, the run game, in order to maybe, you know, give Jalen some more opportunities in the shotgun and, you know, throwing the football and that they weren't as effective of an offense, especially with a weapon like that back there. So, man, having a guy who can tote the rock like that, but more so it's kind of turned into running back by committee. There's not many guys, you know, that are carrying the ball 30 times a game. It's more so now you talk about touches, you know, it's how can we get the ball in his hands. It's a combination of screen passes, you know, check downs, balls on the perimeter that you throw to him where he's one on one, where maybe it's not quite the same abuse as running between the tackles, but we're also going to hand the ball to him 15 to 20 times a game.

[Dan Patrick]

Talking to Drew Brees, tell me what you're talking about today. Promoting today.

Yeah, you know, so I actually had had pretty severe allergies, you know, at times during my career, you know, peanuts and other things. And it's not something I feel like it's talked about enough. No, it was not. I. Look, I had a 60 yard. It was called back for a BS holding call. I'm, I'm, I'm. Yeah, but I can't claim it, unfortunately. It's not, it's not in the stats. Not in the stat books. Are you then I was more elusive. I was more like a pocket elusiveness guy. I was more of like a buy time.

[Dan Patrick]

Okay.

[Drew Brees]

I mean people, people ask me, why didn't you run the ball more? I says, because I was too busy throwing completions, you know.

[Dan Patrick]

Wow. Okay, so you weren't a Michael Vick, Steve Young, Randall Cunningham kind of running threat?

[Drew Brees]

Not, not, not to that degree. I would have, I would have loved to have that, that speed and elusiveness. But yeah, I kept it to just the pocket movement for the most part.

[Dan Patrick]

You faster than Brady?

[Drew Brees]

Oh, yeah, yeah, he's five yards behind me.

[Dan Patrick]

Faster than Peyton? Oh, yeah, he's ten yards behind you.

[Drew Brees]

Brady, I think is 29.

But yeah, I wouldn't say we were the smoothest of, of runners, but, you know, I think we recognized what was, what was going to help us survive, and that was not it.

No, probably not. Big Ben was. He was. He was quite the athlete.

Yeah, it's a lot. It's, it's, it's overwhelming. That's what one of the things Chris wanted to do. That's one of the reasons he loves Imax is he, you know, and it's the Odyssey. It's this big journey and he wanted to just chuck the audience in there and, and have them go with us. And so you really feel that. But I think you kind of Feel it in any format. It's a lot of movie, you know.

I do, I do. What do you make of the Red Sox?

[Dan Patrick]

Okay, they did lose last night, but.

[Matt Damon]

I know, I know, but, but 15. I mean, what the hell? What is that?

[Dan Patrick]

And no star.

[Matt Damon]

Wait, I just. Sorry. But I, you know, I remember the Morgan Miracle in 86 and like the, you know, or the. Yeah. When we went on that run, we were, we weren't good and we went on a run and we ended up going to the posting. But it's amazing to me that this Sport is like 120 years old and, and 15 games is. You think all those teams that won a hundred games and you think of the Dodgers, you know, these guys now. It's just amazing that that is the, the ceiling.

[Dan Patrick]

It seems like, well, you know, back when you were having these runs, you had starting pitchers who actually, you know, went seven, eight, nine, you know, complete games.

[Matt Damon]

Yeah.

[Dan Patrick]

Now, you know, you just don't know when you're going to five, six, seven pitchers. Somebody has a bad night, there's your ball game. But you know, the Red Sox don't have star power, this team.

[Matt Damon]

No, I know. That's what's so incredible at this. It just seems so aberrant and wonderful for us. But, but yeah, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's. It's. I don't know what to make of it. It's great.

[Dan Patrick]

They're like an independent film.

[Matt Damon]

They're. They're obsession, basically.

[Dan Patrick]

Yeah. Yeah. If I said Invictus or this or Born, you could keep the body out of those three. Which one are you keeping?

[Matt Damon]

Oh, this one? Yeah.

[Dan Patrick]

Are you going to keep this one?

[Matt Damon]

I mean, as much as I can. You know, it's kind of, it's kind of a full time job and, and I don't want to be that focused on my life. I have other things that I love to do and, and, and, and a life to live. But, but in terms of just the health and. Because my big fear when I see kind of embarked on this was, was just getting an injury like a dumb kind of a guy our age injury. Right. Like throw your back out or you know, any, you know, any of those things that can happen to us just by getting out of bed. And I knew it was going to be such a physical movie. Just that, just the logistics of getting to some of these locations required you to be healthy enough to make it. And so I didn't want to slow us down. And so that part of, like, just making sure I was moving every day and feeling like I got through something that was this arduous was great. At our age, to feel like, you know, I can, I can, I can live an adventurous life and, and, and, and live it fully. That, that, that's what I'd love to keep doing.

[Dan Patrick]

Okay. How do you not get injured on a movie set like that?

[Matt Damon]

Man, I, you know, it was a lot of. There was a walking down that mountain every night. I didn't. The going up was fine. It actually wasn't a. It was actually a nice way to start the day. A lot of us really liked it. But the, but the coming down, it's, you know, for anybody who hikes, it's. It's always harder coming down. And that. I, I felt a tweak in my left knee like a weekend. And I was really, really mindful, you know, because if you, you know, there you really are, you got no option but to shut the movie down. If you can't, you know, there's no helicopter that can bring you down because it's nighttime. They can't fly. And there's no way to get down but to walk. And so, and so that, that was a concern for me. But, but, but, you know, I think it was just the right amount of time. You know, however many times I walked down that thing, you know, I was at the threshold of probably, you know, one of those little nagging injuries.

[Dan Patrick]

Tom Cruise wouldn't have had a problem.

[Matt Damon]

He doesn't have a problem with anything.

[Dan Patrick]

He would have been repelling down the mountain.

[Matt Damon]

Yeah, he would have figured something out.

[Dan Patrick]

He would have base jumped your next role. You already got it lined up? Yes. Okay. Do you purposely steer clear of physicality?

[Matt Damon]

Oh, no, no, no, no. I don't pick roles that way. I just kind of pick based on what I think is going to be a good movie.

[Dan Patrick]

And what are you going to. Are you.

[Matt Damon]

And it's a movie. It's a movie with the Daniels. I think it's probably. I think they've kept the script under wraps, but the guys who did everything everywhere all at once, and it's, and it's. The way they pitched it to me was. It's the Breakfast Club meets Inception meets an anime film, meets an episode of the John Oliver show that didn't get Aired. So if you liked everything everywhere, all at once and all the wildness and all the haun. And, you know, I think you'll, I think you'll really like this one too. It's, it's, it's a, it's a really special project.

[Dan Patrick]

When do you realize the magnitude of what Christopher Nolan is trying to put it? I mean, I came away going, it was an ex. Like, that was cinematic genius.

[Rebecca Lowe]

Yeah.

[Dan Patrick]

You know, when I first watched Raiders of the Lost Ark, I kind of came away going, how did they do that? And I don't know how much CGI was in there.

[Matt Damon]

Very.

[Dan Patrick]

Like that. Yeah, it didn't feel like that. But you go home to your wife and say, this is far greater than anything I could ever conceive.

[Matt Damon]

Yeah. But, yeah, it's the most ambitious thing I've ever been a part of. I knew the second he said he was doing this and this is, you know, what we were all going to go do. And then in pre production, looking at the plants, because the way he works, he does everything practically, it's, you know, it's all going to be in camera.

[Dan Patrick]

It's.

[Matt Damon]

If it's humanly possible to be done in camera, it's going to be done in camera. Even though the whirlpool, he had jet skis riding in circles to create what the water looks like so that the little CGI is built off of that. So he's doing every single thing he can in camera. And just knowing, having done so many movies, knowing that what that would require, how many thousands of people would have to, you know, and, and then to shoot it on imax, it's just a whole other layer of, of difficulty. And, you know, for every department, you know, the, it was, it was, you know, the, the film loads last two and a half minutes, so you can't make it through a whole scene. You have these emotional scenes and the actors have to pause while they reload the camera. You know, the thing is heavy. You know, when it's all put together, it's over 300 pounds. And so you've got your grip and camera team carrying this thing, you know,

[Dan Patrick]

all over the world.

[Matt Damon]

You know, it just was taxing. It was an extra tax on everybody. But the, the idea that we were the ones who got to do it, you know, it felt like every single person on that set felt lucky to be there. And that was such a great, just energy to be around every day. You know, nobody had ever tried it. You know, we knew what he was doing was ambitious. We knew that he couldn't do it without all.

[Dan Patrick]

All of us.

[Matt Damon]

And everybody really felt their contribution every single day. And so. And so that just ended. I mean, we were exhausted, but we were really happy to be the ones who got to do that.

[Dan Patrick]

Talking to Matt Damon, the movie the Odyssey playing in theaters now. I don't know what happened on the mountain with, with the pigs. That was. That was disturbing. And, yeah, now I. I told my audience when I watched the movie, you know, be a little familiar with the Odyssey and some of the characters, which. I didn't read the book when I was in high school. Matt. But Cliff Notes, I said, don't be afraid to get some Cliff Notes for just some of the, you know, people that they're representing in the movie. But can you explain without giving away too much of what happens on the mountain, is the actress last name Morgan?

[Matt Damon]

It's Samantha Morton.

[Dan Patrick]

Oh, Morton. Oh, my goodness.

[Matt Damon]

She is phenomenal.

[Dan Patrick]

Yeah, that.

[Matt Damon]

She's just. I've known her for. For 25 years, I guess, or. 20 years. No, 25, I guess. this point. She's. She's amazing. And. And she just. Absolutely. It's like I've always said actors, you know, a great actor can be. Can be. Can be great enough for both of you. It was like getting firemen carried by her. She's just so great. And everything that you see on screen is practical. And Chris. And look, I mean, movies were made that way for 80 years before CGI came along. And there are a lot of great tricks, and he used every kind of tool in the toolkit. But, yeah, you can talk to friends about who the characters are, even just get a quick primer if you want. But Chris specifically, specifically made the movie so that if you have no familiarity with the Odyssey, you can kind of come in cold and it's. And you're still going to get it.

[Dan Patrick]

Well, I didn't know Charlize Theron's character, but I wish I would have washed up on shore and she would have been there feeding me, you know, lotus petals.

[Matt Damon]

Well, well, that was, you know, the reason, you know, that that place where we are that, you know, is so kind of. It needs to look unwelcoming. And Chris said that to me in the. In the pre production. He said, yeah, we just looked at the Caribbean. But he goes, the minute you see a palm tree and you're on an island with Charlize,

[Dan Patrick]

you're not gonna leave. And it's true. She's.

[Matt Damon]

She's amazing. Like, you know, and. And it would be the kind of. You know, the. The kind of thing where. Where someone might go, well, maybe I have a family or maybe I don't.

[Dan Patrick]

Yeah. I was wondering why you wanted to leave so quickly to get off that island. Okay, if I give you your final script, you can pick any director you've worked with. Who is directing your final movie?

[Matt Damon]

That's an impossible question, because I have been, I think, more fortunate than any actor on the planet. If you.

[Dan Patrick]

If.

[Matt Damon]

If I look at the list of the people that I've been able to work with, it's. It's embarrassingly wonderful. And they've all been great. Like, they're all. Look, they're partnerships to some degree in which you, the actor, are the junior partner. If you're observing, if you're respecting the way this medium works. I mean, it's a director's medium, but you can be a really helpful partner. And these have been, like, the most kind of rewarding, fulfilling partnerships, creative partnerships I ever could have asked for. How do you choose between, you know, Christopher Nolan and Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola and the Coen brothers and my best friend in the world, Ben, you know, like, it's just an impossible. You know, I'd be. I'd be, you know, so happy just to. Just to repeat, you know, just to get a chance to work with Alexander Payne again or Paul Greengrass or, you know, Clint, all these people that I've. That I've had a chance to work with, that I've learned so much from, and I've had. I have not had a bad experience making a movie. You know, I do hear stories sometimes, and people not coming out of their trailers or whatever. That's. I have never had anything like that. I've never seen anything like that. It's just been, you know, the joy of my life, and I really have not worked a day in my life.

[Drew Brees]

You.

[Dan Patrick]

Every time you're on, we bring up Bourne Identity, we bring up Jason Bourne. It's happening, right?

[Matt Damon]

Well, we're trying. You know, Edward Berger is this phenomenal director, and he really wants to do it, and he's. And. And so I've been talking to him and. And he just sent me kind of the first act. It looks really good, and I'm so. I'm very hopeful that it happened. He's like me. He says, you know, unless it can kind of fit with, you know, that. That those first three we did, you know, unless it can be of that caliber, you know, it's like, don't don't poke the bear. But. But if we really feel like we got a shot at doing something great, I'm all in.

[Dan Patrick]

I love the.

[Matt Damon]

I love that character. It's been an incredible part of my life. I'd love to do it again.

[Dan Patrick]

Is there a sequel with Good Will Hunting?

[Matt Damon]

I don't think so. I don't think so. I mean, we're. You know, it ended with this kind of. I like the way it ended, where he's going off into this world of possibility. And to do a sequel would kind of. I think it would narrow what it could be in the minds of the audience who like the movie, you know? Yeah, that's. That's kind of how I think of it.

[Dan Patrick]

Yeah, I was fine. I'm fine with that answer. Not that I have any say in it, but I didn't know if you become a professor and, you know, something like that, but he becomes a tech bro. Yes. Yeah, I like that. And the answer would have been, you can have one person do your movie. It would have been Ben, then you're covered.

[Matt Damon]

I mean. I mean. I mean, there's. That's. That's who I. Look, we just started this company together four years ago. Like, our whole goal is to work together as much as we can, you know. You know, in. In whatever capacity we can. We. We. You know, we kind of acknowledged once we got into our 50s, like, wait a minute. Our dreams came true. Like, we're insane if we don't, you know, if we don't make the most of this together. This is what we talked about when we were kids.

[Dan Patrick]

There's so many. I was such an embarrassment. Riches for me. I'd go to work every day and I'd be paired up with just one amazing actor after another. Everyone just absolutely killed it in this movie. It was so fun for me to play opposite, you know, Hamesh Patel, who's on the boat with me and I mean, Annie and Tom. I mean, he's just top to bottom, it was. It was just thrilling.

They killed it. But you killed it too. You killed a lot of people in there.
