We talked a little bit about the soccer with Spain handling France. They've allowed one goal in. It's weird because we do talk about this. I talk about this every Super Bowl. We get to the postseason. High scoring offenses wide open. And I said, it's going to be defense. It always comes down to defense. At some point you have to make a stop or the other team has to make a stop. And usually a Super bowl can depend on that, the outcome and what you saw yesterday. I text Paulie halfway through the match. Spain and France. I said, Spain reminds me of Floyd Mayweather, just unbelievably, tactically defensive and great at it. And they just felt like there was always two or three players that were in the vicinity of Mbappe and anybody else who was going to try to have a shot on goal. It wasn't exciting in what we've talked about because this is, this World Cup's been about firepower that was just about Spain saying, you know, this is kind of how we do it. And we do it as well, if not better than anybody. Eric Wolda, host of the Eric Wilda talks football on Sirius xmfc. Former member of the US Team, three World Cups and back with a second appearance.
Darius Rucker
Wow.
Eric Wynalda
What's going on?
Dan Patrick
I don't.
Eric Wynalda
You okay? Are we feeling okay?
Dan Patrick
I got caught up yesterday and I'm like, I, I want you to talk about Spain, that everybody's talking about Mbappe and Holland and Messi and all the, you know, firepower. Spain's kind of boringly great.
Eric Wynalda
Well, I know it's, it's, it's more complex than that, but I feel like I got to bring the, the level up today. You guys are talking about death. You went from Dave and Buster's to Pepperoni. I can't believe that none of you guys took the chicken pizza, by the way. I'm with you, Dan. And by the way, top four, ESPN all time. Sometimes on your exit from a former employer, they. They do stuff like this just to piss you off. You are number one, hands down, period. There's not even a question.
Dan Patrick Show Announcer
Thank you.
Todd (Dan Patrick Show Producer)
Come on.
Dan Patrick
Thank you.
Eric Wynalda
Kidding me?
Dan Patrick
Thank you.
Eric Wynalda
All right.
Ryan Reynolds (Mint Mobile Advertisement)
Spain.
Eric Wynalda
Spain.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Eric Wynalda
What Spain does is. And this is where it gets a little bit confusing, because we could say it's defense, but what. What they do is actually fantastic. When France tried to play defense, they made them chase in such a way that they were all tired out by the time they got the ball. And there is a design to that. If you watch the second goal, for example, and there's a trust that they have, and they have this guy Rodri in the middle of the field who's coming off at acl. But it's. It's kind of like if I threw a pile of crap at you and your Rodri, you catch it and somehow give it back, packaged with a little bow on it. Because that's how good he is. He's just amazing. And he makes everything look easy. He makes everybody look better. So, Fran, since we're talking about death today, they fell on their own sword. They. They just went. What they didn't realize was happening is, in this transitional game is you can't chase, chase, chase, and then run. You can't. It doesn't work that way. Even the second goal, they took out that guy Barkala, who was very instrumental in making it a tough day for Lamina Mall, because every time Lamine would beat his guy, this guy would run out of position just to chase him down because he was fast enough. His replacement Due didn't do a. He didn't chase Poro. And that's the only reason why that goal happened. So France is out and Spain is good. They're very good. That's the reason why they won the Euros. I think this will continue. And it's. It's. It's an amazing deal. When you have a goalkeeper with six shutouts, and that's their 37th consecutive win at international football, it doesn't happen. I think it's the record and. And it's been an amazing ride.
Dan Patrick
What do you expect today with England and Argentina?
Eric Wynalda
This sucks, man. I. I can't believe that I'm going to be saying this, but I. You know, 250 years we got on boats to get away from these guys.
Darius Rucker
Now we're rooting for what Is that.
Eric Wynalda
I. I think. I think Argentina's got something going on. There's. There's an undercurrent here. I don't know what it is, but I've been, you know, watching them almost seemingly implode. Everybody. Everybody. When you play against Argentina, you're playing as a champion, so you bring your. Your best game. And the energy levels are off the charts. And they've gotten a little fortunate with the referee calls. I mean, you got to. You have to have. Let's put it this way, England gets seven fouls before they get a yellow card. Argentina, 22 and a half. Well, okay, something's going on, right? So they. And they've had an easy pathway. This is Argentina's first real game. Argentina's a very good team.
Dan Patrick
But are you saying there's favoritism here?
Eric Wynalda
Oh, absolutely. And anybody that says otherwise is just. Just trying to, you know, come up with another narrative. I mean, like, the Egypt goal, taking that back, it's one of the biggest travesties I've seen in a World cup, because that was a wonderful goal. And I think I said this on another program, and it was almost like, no, that's not a goal. Some guy in the 18th row spilled mustard on his hot dog, hot dog on his shirt. So we got to call that one back. Really, really ashamed because Egypt, Egypt was terrific, and they got cheated. So. And by the way, Messi, you know, we got Balagun, and we take back the yellow, the red card, which was. Which was not the right thing, but Messi should have never even had his first five goals. That was a red car defense in the first game against Algeria. So, yes, favoritism has been alive and well with this Argentine setup.
Dan Patrick
Are you okay with that? That, that the, like, why would they be playing favorites? I know it's a TV event, but do you think that there is.
Eric Wynalda
Well, it's not only like, like, you guys are basketball guys, right? So it's kind of like you do the tournament, 64 teams, the blah, blah, blah, and 1, 2, 3, 4, make it almost. You know, there's always a dark horse, right? But before this tournament started, we could have all told you it was going to be Spain, France, Argentina, England, and that. That's, you know, and we see the big TV numbers and we see people, like, has that feel of. And everybody's having shots at Gia Infantino because it just looks like. It just looks corrupt. It looks bad when, when you see these kind of things happen, people getting cheated out of goals, the. The whole. The whole Croatian Goal. The ball detected someone's hair follicle. But in the England game, somehow that didn't hit the wire. And we're supposed to believe that the technology within the ball is telling nest and our eyes are lying? It just gets, it gets, it gets a little weird sometimes.
Dan Patrick
In our game, do we depend on, you know, instant replay or var too much? Do we lean on them?
Eric Wynalda
Yeah, I don't like it. Only I like the, I like the idea of you when it's offside. It's offside. You know that, that's, and then sometimes it's a toe or it's a nose or whatever. And, but when you go back, you know, 10 seconds and you're re refereeing the game, that, that's where we've gone too far. And it makes it far too easy for, for the conspiracy theorists to say, all right, what's really going on here? Because some, some teams get the, the favoritism, some teams don't. And then you re referee these situations, you look at them in slow motion, of course it looks worse. And they're not, they say it's in the rules, that they're not allowed to do that, but they do it anyway way. So it's, it's, it's getting to be quite a mess. I hope they fix it.
Dan Patrick
Eric Wynalda, host of Wynalda talks football SiriusXMFC, played on three World cup teams, also runs the wildest soccer academy for 16, 17 year olds. I'm sure you're well aware. Kevin Frazier from Entertainment Tonight last week when we are in Tahoe.
Darius Rucker
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Laid into Alexi Lawless and our soccer program here. Give me your thoughts on what. It's too long to play in this segment, but I get it.
Eric Wynalda
I know Kevin. I mean, look, I think he's kind of in the same boat that we, we're all in right now. We just want, we, we just want our soccer team to be better than what we are. We want to go further than 16th and in a competition like this. And when, when, and I worked for Fox, so I can raise my hand and say I'm no longer there. Mainly because I didn't subscribe to the idea that I have to say something stupid every day to get everybody all fired up. I, I, I didn't want to do it and I'm not there anymore, which is fine now. Lex and I are still very good friends. I text message with him yesterday. He knows what he's doing and I don't think he cares what Frey says. But what we should we should. I think our soccer community is far too intelligent for. For him in that position to go on that stage and say some of those things as if he's just. It's just going to float. Float away and pop somewhere else. You know, it's not. It's not the. The state of our country. Our country is far more intelligent as a soccer nation.
Dan Patrick
But compare the academies in Europe. Like, what would you do if you were going to make us formidable starting.
Eric Wynalda
I'm already doing it, Dan. I'm already doing it. I have my own team. I pick my own, you know, group of rock stars that are not in the system, and we go beat MLS teams that's, you know, and then they go, whoa, where'd you find these guys? And I said, well, maybe it. Maybe it's a little bit. You're not looking under enough rocks, or maybe you don't know what you're looking at in the first place. But if everybody wants to solve the soccer problem, let me just do it.
Todd (Dan Patrick Show Producer)
You ready?
Eric Wynalda
This is how easy this is. The rest of the world spends all of their time trying to find the talent, and then they eliminate the untalented, and they thin the herd pretty quick. And so the best soccer players at the age of 16 and 17 in Europe or France or Germany, wherever it is, are playing. And then they have the ability to tell those folks that aren't good enough, no, don't. Don't play anymore. Go do something else. America is trying to figure out how to increase the numbers, which is not helping to grow the game and get more people are playing soccer than ever before. That's not good, especially if we're talking about two teams, and let's say eight of them can do it and eight of them can't. Right? What service are those players who aren't talented enough to be on that field but have been told they are and they're paying for that instruction, that this is somehow going to work out for you. Some say, oh, it didn't work out. Give me another thousand dollars and we'll see you next month. And that continues. So these.
Dan Patrick
These.
Eric Wynalda
These players who are being. Who are holding on to hope and a dream that they're going to someday miraculously become international talent. It's a lie. It's. And I feel bad for those kids because they're being told that they're going to be something that they're not, and they're paying through the nose to try and get somewhere that they're never going to get, and the rest of the world doesn't do that, Dan. We just basically say, no. That's my professional opinion. Go do something else. You're 16. And go do something else for it's too late. That kid who's 16 and is untalented in America will stay all the way until the collegiate process. Make a determination of whether I want to go to college or be a pro. And then it just fizzes out. We don't identify our real talent, package them together. Even though we have a national team, I think I could put together a group of 16, 17 year olds and beat our national team. That's just me. Maybe I'm being arrogant, I don't know. But I think we just don't do it the right way. We involve way too many people, we charge too many people when we should be thin in the herd, finding the talent and locking in on that. If we ever did that, Dan, we'd win the World Cup.
Dan Patrick
You bring up. And you mentioned money a few times. I think that's the key with a lot of this is we want to keep you in the system, keep paying the money. The number of parents that I heard from after Kevin Frazier was really remarkable because they said, look, we don't know what to do. And we want, you know, we're on a traveling team, we're spending all this money. And, you know, I still want to know, like, Kevin was bringing up, you know, the inner city kid. They can't afford this. Like, how do you find those? You know, look where they found Messi. He was nowhere. You know, all of a sudden you're like, oh, this kid, you know, he's 12. We'll sign him, you know, a contract on a bar napkin. We don't have those stories. It feels like this is a little too controlled, the money aspect, right? And once again, I'm on the outside looking in. But my questions, you know, may be obvious, but I'm still looking for those answers of how do we make this better? Instead of doing the same thing. Because, you know, when Kristen Pulisic says, hey, this is just the start. It's not the start. No, we just start over. It's Groundhog Day every four years, right?
Eric Wynalda
And that's usually you and I when you call me every four years, then we rehash this thing. I'm so honored to be on the show twice in a month, by the way.
Dan Patrick Show Announcer
This is great.
Todd (Dan Patrick Show Producer)
I'm a.
Eric Wynalda
And I see you guys every day, by the way. So, Todd, hopefully I get to spend some time on the couch. Maybe you could help me out with that. That sounds like a good idea.
Will Ferrell
We would love that.
Eric Wynalda
I think we should. I think we could solve a lot of problems. But look, this is what I do now. And I listen to other people. I listen to the Landon Donovans of the world, you know, criticize everything and say, oh, we're doing this wrong. We're doing this wrong. Landon Donovan has absolutely zero experience at the, the youth level, so he needs to kind of temper his.
Darius Rucker
His.
Eric Wynalda
You have to know what you're talking about before you talk about it. That's. That's my number one rule. My academy is all about finding that kid who can't afford it or is just super talented and isn't aware of how talented they are. And I try to put them in environments where they can grow. It's also a problem that upon the elevate that moment of discovery also is in this country, unfortunately, the moment of the destruction of the soul of the player. Because the second that they find you, they try to turn you into something that you're not. And that's not what I do. My whole man, I did put my money where my mouth is. I pay for this. These kids don't pay for anything. I take them to the opportunities door and I knock it down and it's been great. The response has been wonderful. You go to a place you don't expect. You know where Bochum is, but that's my old club. And I put a group of 16, 17 year olds on a plane for one game, flew all the way to Germany to play these. And I explained to them this is what a professional environment looks like. And these guys are going to try and hurt you if you don't jump. So get ready. And we won the game. 4 nothing. And their take on this, and all the scouts that were at the game were like, where the hell did you find these guys? It's not that we don't have talent, it's just that we don't know what to do with it once we find it. And that's part of the systemic problem that we have. But it's. It's just nobody wants to talk about it. Nobody wants to hear somebody say we meet fewer people playing. Nobody wants to hear that. But it's the truth.
Dan Patrick
One word answer here. England or Argentina?
Eric Wynalda
England and I. I know, I know.
Dan Patrick
It's okay.
Eric Wynalda
Something's going on with Argentina. Their looks run out. And I love Jude Billingham. I loved it. Just do some research on the guy. The guy's a. He's a great human being. And then we don't have enough of them. So I'm rooting for that guy today.
Dan Patrick
Great to talk to you again, Eric.
Eric Wynalda
Great to talk to you.
Dan Patrick
I don't know if it'll be four years. I'm going to be honest with you. I don't know if it'll be.

everyone, it's Cal Penn, host of Irsay The Audible and iHeart Audiobook Club. This week on the podcast I'm sitting down with Lily Chu, the author of the Audible original romantic comedy Just Kiss Already. It's a story about a forensic anthropologist who secretly writes mystery novels, an actress who adapts his book into a film, and what happens when a meme and a media tour collide with a slow burn romance. It's performed by Simu Liu and Philippa Hsu, and it is an absolute blast.
Lily Chu (Audiobook Narrator)
When you actually hear the performance, you realize that other people are taking your words and what you thought was kind of a straightforward sentence like the cat in the corner is black. In my head it's the cat in the corner is black. Not the dog, not the gerbil. But someone else might say it, the cat in the corner is black. That's always fascinating to me how they just bring in all these different nuances and really make it fun and interesting and distinctive.

Dan Patrick
Do you even remember some of the things that happen on tour?
Darius Rucker
Absolutely. No, but I'm talking about some of the stuff that we've. That happened with you.
Todd (Dan Patrick Show Producer)
We've.
Darius Rucker
Man, we've done some fun stuff, but not today. Not the whole. You get canceled
Dan Patrick
now. You guys did Some damage, though. Back in the day, it was vicious.
Darius Rucker
When I was writing that book and really starting to remember, it was vicious.
Dan Patrick
But do you. Do you think you had to go against the stereotype of you guys were just a nice, poppy band and you're not getting it, you know, behind the music, you know, nobody's getting in trouble. You're not mle crew.
Darius Rucker
Yeah, I think we. You know, we fought. We fought that our whole careers. I mean, you know, we've. We're still fighting that. That we weren't that, you know, cool or anything like that. But for us, I think the reason we were going so hard is because we could, you know, we all. We had all going to University of South Carolina. I'd gone there because it was the biggest party school in the country, and, you know, we just had a blast. And when it really got bad, when it exploded, like when we could afford beer, it got bad, man. It got bad.
Dan Patrick
What was. Was there a dangerous city?
Darius Rucker
Yeah, New Orleans. Oh, New Orleans and Las Vegas. We had a rule, two days, three days, tops. Because if not, you know, you know, you. You end up doing stuff in New Orleans. Did you like you. That just didn't really happen, but it happened. So those two cities were like. We got to be in and out of those places.
Dan Patrick
Did you do rehab?
Darius Rucker
No, I didn't. I did. You better quit drinking, or I'm gonna make you miserable. So I stopped partying.
Dan Patrick
That was it.
Darius Rucker
Yeah, I mean, I. It was overnight. It was truly overnight when I stopped really partying hard. It was overnight.
Dan Patrick
You still get high?
Darius Rucker
I mean, I used to like to have a good time. I took some beers. We, like, the life is good.
Dan Patrick
No, you had one beer when we went to dinner.
Darius Rucker
Yeah.
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Like, now you're health conscious. Like, I don't even know you anymore.
Darius Rucker
I am health conscious. You know, when your doctor is telling you about your health and you got to get healthy, you know, you do. I want to live 20, 30 more years, you know, and. And have some fun and live healthy. So, you know. Yeah, but, you know, I'll still drink with you.
Dan Patrick
But how did this. How did Keith Richards do it? Like, I don't understand. How do you perform?
Darius Rucker
I don't understand it.
Dan Patrick
Hammered.
Darius Rucker
I don't understand. I mean. I mean, I've done that. That I understand, but. But I don't understand the length of time he did it and to still be doing it at his level. Like, I was one of those Stones guys that were like, you know, I like the Stones, but I just, you know, why. Why is it so big? And if about two tours ago, I go see him in Vegas with my buddies and we go to see him in Vegas, and this is not an exaggeration. They hit the stage and I went, oh, that's why. The second they had the stage, I got exactly what. And it was just pure rock and roll. I was like, this is one of the greatest things I've ever seen.
Dan Patrick
I just don't know if. If we look at Keith with degree of difficulty of what he's done, what he's accomplished. He's still alive, and I think he kind of stopped everything. Maybe he smokes heaters.
Darius Rucker
Yeah.
I don't think he really. He definitely doesn't go the way he
Dan Patrick
used to, but these guys are doing. And then it set the stage for Motley Crue and Guns N Roses and you gotta have Jack Daniels and Ozzy.
Darius Rucker
You know, all that.
Dan Patrick
Did you fall? Like, did you feel like if you're a rock and roll band, you got to be out there drinking?
Darius Rucker
Oh, yeah. Like, even. Like, I look back to our shows back in the day. Like, even on stage, you know, drinking that bottle of Jim Beam before the show's over. Between the five. I mean, what is that? I mean, and every night, and we're playing five nights a week, and I'm putting down a bottle of Jim Beam before the show's over. You know, it's like, what are you doing with. To yourself? That. But that was. I'm sure that was part of it. And Jaegermeister, Jagermeister, beggars that you guys used to drink.
Dan Patrick
And it was Jim Beam and Jagermeister,
Darius Rucker
which is the dumbest thing. I can't believe y' all drank that stuff.
Dan Patrick
Well, but you guys were trying to invent something to keep you.
Dan Patrick Show Announcer
Yeah.
Darius Rucker
Going at that point. Especially at that point. It was. It was. We. We gotta find something to.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. I'm retiring in a year and a half.
Darius Rucker
Yes.
Dan Patrick
When are you retiring?
Darius Rucker
Two years.
Dan Patrick
Really?
Darius Rucker
I might. I. I've been really looking at it, and I. I played 110 shows last year. I mean, that's what I'm. What am I doing? Yeah. And, you know, I still like making records and playing and everything, but I'm really starting to like being home a lot. I like being home a lot. And so I'm looking at maybe doing a tour. One more big Hootie thing and.
Dan Patrick
Oh, you're gonna do a Hootie thing. I like.
Darius Rucker
If we call it. If we call it. I gotta do one more. One more hoodie Thing, you know, because we have to finish in Williamsburg Stadium.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Darius Rucker
I mean, it's. It's just our last show. When we say we're done, it's got to be Williams Bryce Stadium.
Dan Patrick
Okay. So South Carolina.
Darius Rucker
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Okay, well, why don't you just do one show? You don't have to do a tour.
Darius Rucker
You just made four, three guys very unhappy. You just made three guys very unhappy.
Dan Patrick
If there was a fight, we're talking to Darius Rucker. If there was a fight between all of the Blowfish, who wins?
Darius Rucker
Between all four of us.
Dan Patrick
All four, yeah.
Darius Rucker
I'd like to say I win, but it'd be me or Sony.
Dan Patrick
Sony.
Darius Rucker
Yeah. Because Dean's the strongest, but Dean's the nicest.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Darius Rucker
Sony from Chicago used to fight the streets.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Darius Rucker
Mark and D are from Gaithersburg. You know, I don't think. I don't know if they've ever really been in a fight in their lives. You know, I grew up in Charleston fighting, and so I think it'd be me or Sony, but it'd be a scrap at the end.
Dan Patrick
Todd has been begging me to sing another song with you. I'm not tonight.
Darius Rucker
I told you I'm in no way.
Dan Patrick
I'm in no way.
Darius Rucker
But we're not going to do this this time. We're doing never going. We're going to do Never going to
Todd (Dan Patrick Show Producer)
give you Never going to let you down.
Darius Rucker
Okay, we're doing that.
Dan Patrick
How about we just do a little bit of that, Todd? Is that okay?
CarMax Advertisement
Sure.
Dan Patrick
With Rick Astley.
Todd (Dan Patrick Show Producer)
Rick Astley. Someone's going to get Rick Roll.
Dan Patrick
Who starts it?
Dan Patrick Show Announcer
Always Todd.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Todd (Dan Patrick Show Producer)
We're no strangers to love you know the rules and so do I this old commitment's what I'm dreaming of. You wouldn't get this from any other guy. And if you ask me how I'm feeling Don't tell me you're too shy to see Never gonna give you up Never gonna let you down Never gonna run around then hurt you Never ever gonna make you cry. Let's finish it. Never gonna say goodbye Never gonna tell a lie Never gonna give Never gonna
Dan Patrick
now. That was good.
Todd (Dan Patrick Show Producer)
That was lovely.
Darius Rucker
That's great. You just made my day.
Todd (Dan Patrick Show Producer)
Performing with Darius is the greatest thing.
Darius Rucker
I know he could sing, man, but not on stage. We okay? I thought it was great. There were moments that weren't great, but
Dan Patrick
there were moments that Marvin let Darius hear just a little bit of when Todd joined us.
Todd (Dan Patrick Show Producer)
But.
Dan Patrick
But. But he picked the song.
Todd (Dan Patrick Show Producer)
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
I felt it sounds like he's wounded.
Darius Rucker
He. I Don't think he could hear himself really? Well, we're gonna fix that.
Dan Patrick
I was.
Darius Rucker
Next time we're gonna have some in ears for him so he can hear himself, because that's what that was. He couldn't hear himself on that stage because we don't have monitors.
Dan Patrick
Wait, so you'll have him on when he comes?
Darius Rucker
Oh, absolutely.
Dan Patrick
Okay. But not this time around. Not tonight.
Darius Rucker
Not tonight. We have to practice. Yeah, we're doing Rick Astley next up.
Dan Patrick
Okay, so that. That'll be one song that, you know, I tried to talk him out of doing two.
Darius Rucker
I know, he told me.
Dan Patrick
I'm backstage. I'm on dude one.
Cal Penn
And.
Dan Patrick
And your crowd is out there, and all of a sudden they're going, wait a minute. Oh, okay, something. This guy's up there. Make a wish. Kid is up there.
Todd (Dan Patrick Show Producer)
Really?
Eric Wynalda
They're swaying and singing along.
Dan Patrick
That's harsh, man. And then all of a sudden he goes into the second one. Well, your audience is like, okay, okay, what. What's going on here? Then I think you went right into a Hootie song, like Let Her Cry.
Darius Rucker
Oh, that's what you do. That's what you do. If you're going to let. When that happens, you gotta kill it with a banger. You gotta come back with a banger.
Dan Patrick
I gotta. I gotta bring him back. What's the COVID song that you. You want to do that you haven't done?
Darius Rucker
Oh, wow, great question. Cover song. I want to do that I haven't done, honestly. And I. I don't know why I haven't done it. But the first song that comes to mind is Detroit Rock City by Chris. I've always wanted to sing that song, but it's so high, we'd have to change the key and everything. But that is one of my absolute favorite songs of all time.
Dan Patrick
Detroit Rocks City by Kiss.
Darius Rucker
Yes.
Dan Patrick
Did you ever meet Kiss?
Darius Rucker
Oh, yeah. They're my buddies. Those are my boys.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. But it feels like you got NWA and you got Flavor Flav and, dude,
Darius Rucker
let me tell you, that moment at Stagecoach.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Darius Rucker
When Public Enemy came out on stage, it was one of the greatest moments in my career. It was unbelievable. It was unbelievably great. It was unbelievably great. We're at Stagecoach. Stagecoach. And we come out and do Flight to Power. Freaking genius. And they said yes. Public Enemies said yes.
Wow.
Genius. Genius. I still can't believe people are talking about that the way they should be. It was genius.
Dan Patrick
Who haven't you played with?
Darius Rucker
Paul McCarty? Oh, he's the one.
Dan Patrick
Can you broach that topic?
Darius Rucker
I broach it every time.
Dan Patrick
Have you met him?
Darius Rucker
I have.
Oh, you love this story. He's playing Orlando.
Dan Patrick
Why don't you. Why don't. We'll tease that.
Darius Rucker
All right.
Dan Patrick
Let me take a break.
Darius Rucker
Yes.
Dan Patrick
By the way, Chef Greg had some food just for us. Wait, you're on a diet?
Darius Rucker
No, I'm. Eat it.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Darius Rucker
Yes.
Dan Patrick
I don't know what it is, but he said, hey, you know, around 10:40 Eastern, I'll have something for you and Darius and the rest of the Danite. So we'll take a break. We'll come back. What song are you playing today?
Darius Rucker
My new single.
Dan Patrick
Oh, okay. Awesome. And he's going to retire in two years. He's getting married in February of 2020.
Darius Rucker
That's just going to be the party. That's just the party.
Dan Patrick
Oh, so I don't get to. I was at the ceremony when you got married the first time.
Darius Rucker
Yeah, but no one's going to be able to say ceremony.
Dan Patrick
That's still one of the stranger ceremonies.
Darius Rucker
Every time you tell that story, I y', all, I'm in the bus and I say to myself, I probably shouldn't have said my save the date the day before I came on Dan Patrick show, and I prove. He's proving me right. I probably shouldn't.
Dan Patrick
All right, we'll come back. Darius will tell the Paul McCartney story and he'll play his new single. We're back after this Dan Patrick Show.

Hey, everyone, it's Cal Penn, host of Irsay The Audible and iHeart Audiobook Club. This week on the podcast, I'm sitting down with Divergent author Veronica Roth to talk about her sprawling new novel, Seek the Traitor's Son. It's a sci fi fantasy epic about two protagonists on opposite sides of a war and a prophecy neither of them wanted.
Veronica Roth
My first book was Divergent, and when that came out, like, because it was so popular, I think it attracted, like, mostly positivity, but the negativity I sucked in like a sponge. And I think it was, like, critiques of things I liked when I was like, you know, I was 23 and I wrote this book and it had all my, like, dorky little cheesy or maybe unrealistic loves in it. And I started to feel a lot of shame about those things. And so for the rest of my career I steered away from those little things that like, make you feel pleasure when you read. But I also was like saying no to these parts of myself that I then was like, screw it. Yeah, so that's this book.

have you played with Snoop Dogg?
Darius Rucker
I've actually. Snoop was on that R and B record I did, so, yeah, yeah, yeah. That was a fun day, too.
Todd (Dan Patrick Show Producer)
Okay.
Dan Patrick
Okay. So the we're back with Darius Rucker. You met Paul McCartney. How did it go?
Darius Rucker
Oh, yeah. He's playing in Orlando, and I'm taking my kids and we go to the show. And, you know, Paul doesn't do a meet and greet, but we're managed under the same company. I was like, you got to give me a meeting. Says, all right, so I don't know how we're going to meet him. Chill's about to start. And this man, tour manager, comes up, grabs me, and we go in the back. And he's about to walk on stage. And he walks up with the Beatles jacket on and everything. And that's why Daven comes up. He shakes my hand first. Paul McCartney knows my name. Well, we meet and he's got to go. And we talk real quick. Talk real quick. And we're taking a picture. And as we're taking a picture, my daughter Danny looks over me, goes, dad, are you crying? And yeah.
Dan Patrick
Were you?
Darius Rucker
I was.
Dan Patrick
Pretty great moment.
Darius Rucker
Yes, I was crying. I couldn't believe I met Paul McCarthy.
Dan Patrick
Okay, so this is a new single.
Darius Rucker
Yes, yes.
I've been fighting for this one. It's called I Believe.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Darius Rucker
When you see the train wreck coming but you can't rebuild the tracks. When all the prayers, praying have no answer coming back. When you feel like a number at the bottom of a stack. Don't give up, don't turn back. When all the lies you're hearing are louder than the truth. You're scared to take a chance because you're too afraid to lose. When everything your feelings just a different shade of blue. Don't give up give up on you.
Darius Rucker (Singing)
Cause I believe in love. I believe in truth I believe in hope's the pleasure Always come back to I believe a lie. Cause I have seen the proof And I believe the darkness There's a place we battle through.
Darius Rucker
I believe in you oh Lord, this I pray. Hey maybe you believe it too someday. When the bad days feel like forever and the good days fly on by. When all the things that make you laugh now just make you cry. You know something's listen don't know why, don't give up stare inside.
Darius Rucker (Singing)
Cause I believe in love. I believe in truth I believe it holds the place will always come back to I believe a lie. Cuz I have sin to prove that I believe the doctors there the flesh we battle through I believe in you
Darius Rucker
oh as I pray hey maybe you
Darius Rucker (Singing)
believe it to someday oh we're gonna shine someday. I believe in love I believe in truth I believe in hopes of pleasure Always come back to I believe in lies. Cause I have seen the proof and I believe the darkness There's a place we battle through. I believe you oh Lord, just I pray.
Darius Rucker
Hey maybe you believe it too someday maybe you believe it too soon.
Dan Patrick Show Announcer
Nice.
Dan Patrick
Nice. Now, are you playing that tonight?
Darius Rucker
Yes.
Dan Patrick
Oh, you are?
Darius Rucker
Oh, yeah.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Darius Rucker
Oh, yeah. I call that my love letter to America.
Dan Patrick
Oh, yeah. And your fiance.
Darius Rucker
Yes, yes.
But you know, just where the world. Where we are right now, man, you know?
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Darius Rucker
I believe in us.
Dan Patrick
What if you don't play Hold My Hand tonight?
Darius Rucker
Hold my hand? If I don't play hold my hand. I might get some DMS if I
Dan Patrick
didn't play Wagon Wheel.
Darius Rucker
All right. I would get some DMS if I didn't play wagon. We'll be a riot in an amazing. It would be a riot if I didn't play it.
Dan Patrick
I remember when. When it first exploded and I said, hey, congratulations. You get to sing that song the rest of your life.
Darius Rucker
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
I mean, it's a good problem.
Darius Rucker
Yeah.
Oh, I love it. I'm. I'm lucky. I'm one of those. I know artists who. Friends of mine who hate playing it there. It's. They played it so much, they hate it. And I'm just one of those guys. I love it. The second you hit that note and that crowd, I love it, man. I've worked my whole life to have hits and to have hits that are that big and that. Yes, undeniable, man. I'll play them the rest of my life and be happy about it.
Eric Wynalda
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Because, you know, just a note to an artist. We don't want to hear what you want to play? No, we want you to play why we're there.
Darius Rucker
Exactly. Don't get me wrong, we will listen to the album track. We'll listen to it. That, that new song. We're gonna listen to it. But you better play a song I want to hear. And I'm the guy. These people play their hard earned money. They see me play, I will play. I love it every night.
Dan Patrick
Last concert you went to.
Darius Rucker
Oh, goodness gracious, good question. The last concert I went to. Oh, Randy Foster played the Music hall in Charleston about a year and a half ago. And I went to see him there and it was awesome.
Dan Patrick
You know, he's got an unbelievable voice. Who, Randy Travis?
Darius Rucker
Yes.
Dan Patrick
Like. Like there's
Darius Rucker
so good, man. It's so good.
Dan Patrick
It is so rich.
Darius Rucker
Yes. And there's nobody. There's never, never been anybody like him.
Dan Patrick
But there's a couple. Like who else stands out where you go? Nobody could sing like that.
Darius Rucker
Stapleton. Nobody.
Dan Patrick
Chris Stapleton.
Darius Rucker
Stapleton. Who else? Randy Travis. Female wise. The new girl, Lauren Elena. Nobody.
Dan Patrick
Oh, yeah.
Darius Rucker
Nobody sings like her. So she's got her own thing going, you know, and that's something in our business. When you got that, it's so rare because there's a lot of people, you know, I'm not coming down anywhere, but a lot of people sound like somebody else or they sound like that.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Darius Rucker
When you have that thing where you sound like you, that's something you got.
Dan Patrick
Well, you're lucky.
Darius Rucker
I am very lucky.
Dan Patrick
Nobody sounds like you.
Darius Rucker
Very lucky.
Todd (Dan Patrick Show Producer)
And.
Darius Rucker
And I'm at that point as if they do sound like people. People say they trying to sound like Darius and that's a good thing to have.
Dan Patrick
Who are you saying sounds like you?
Darius Rucker
Nobody.
Dan Patrick
Oh, okay. I wonder if Demi Moore could be a great singer with that.
Darius Rucker
I bet you could.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. I'm just curious about that.
Darius Rucker
Yeah.
I bet she could do whatever she'd like to. Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Like my voice?
Darius Rucker
Yeah, you could be a good singer if you could sing. Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Wow. All my friends love a low rider low.
Darius Rucker
You really should have been a rapper. You don't even need a band. You can do music.
Dan Patrick
Dolphins prediction this year.

hey everyone,
Cal Penn
it's Cal Penn, the host of Irsay The Audible and iHeart Audiobook Club. This week I'm sitting down with author Matt Dinnaman and narrator Jeff Hayes to talk about dungeon crawler Carl. Matt had one line in a notebook from middle school Alien game show. It took him until 2019 to finally write it, but what came out was an out of this world audiobook phenomenon. We talked about that origin talking cat with a charisma stat that breaks the game and what it takes to voice an entire world.
Jeff Hayes (Audiobook Narrator)
Fiction is bull, so you gotta trick me into caring about what you're talking about. And that's always what I have thought of as my job. So as a narrator, I always want to keep you engaged by making you feel as if I care as a narrator. And when I do dialogue, I don't want to tell you what the characters are saying I want you to hear firsthand.

Dan Patrick
The Hawk premiered on Netflix yesterday.
Will Ferrell
I. I'm a little overwhelmed because the.
Darius Rucker
The.
Will Ferrell
The. The grand at this amazing man cave.
Dan Patrick
So you came into the old cave. Yes, as Ron Burgundy.
Will Ferrell
Ron Burgundy used the converted dance studio.
Dan Patrick
Yes.
Will Ferrell
Or the dance studio it was above. A dance studio.
Dan Patrick
It was a dance studio.
Will Ferrell
It was a dance studio.
Dan Patrick
Yes.
Will Ferrell
More in kind of. Kind of downtown Milford.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, downtown.
Will Ferrell
And you guys used to take bumper shots out the window onto the street.
Dan Patrick
Yes.
Will Ferrell
And that's where Ron was hanging out.
Dan Patrick
Still, the fact that you're there with what, a six pack of Old English? Old English 40.
Ryan Reynolds (Mint Mobile Advertisement)

Will Ferrell
And donuts.
Dan Patrick
And you were out there as Ron Burgundy, and people were driving by.
Darius Rucker
No one.
Dan Patrick
No one is going to think Ron Burgundy is here.
Will Ferrell
No one's no one's pausing to look at me. Just some weirdo in a mustache in a polyester suit. But I never told you this, and I never followed through on what was going to be my greatest Dan Patrick moment. I wanted to surprise you guys, not tell a soul, and stand out there one day during a show and just hope that you guys went to a
Dan Patrick
bumper shot without us knowing you were in danger.
Will Ferrell
Without knowing. And I was willing to pay the price if you never. I would stand out there for three hours with a cardboard sign that says, dan, can I ask. I have a question.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Will Ferrell
And then hopefully you guys would see me. Bring me in. And then I was going to ask something. I think it was right around the time the Red Sox finally won the World Series again. And I was going to say, dan, here's my question. Do you think the Red Sox will ever break the curse? And then he'd be like, of course. It just happened. When. When did. How did I not hear about this? And I'd be like, well, that was my question. I was going to walk out and leave very Andy Kaufman, but I didn't follow through. By the way, I kick myself to this day.
Dan Patrick
Something's happened, though, because now it feels like you're a big. We had. We had one of your people.
Eric Wynalda
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
And she sent an email.
Todd (Dan Patrick Show Producer)
Yes.
Will Ferrell
You sent it back to me.
Dan Patrick
So she was asking everything about us, who was going to be there.
Will Ferrell
Right.
Dan Patrick
Security checks, wanted, birth signs, horoscopes, colonoscopies, all of these things.
Will Ferrell
Yes.
Dan Patrick
And I was like, todd, tell her that I'm going to contact Will directly. So I. I sent you a screenshot of all the things she was asking you. Go, oh. Oh, golly.
Will Ferrell
That. That was so.
Dan Patrick
I don't know if things have changed.
Will Ferrell
She was just. That was a someone just part of my. My publicist team, just trying to do a very thorough job and.
Dan Patrick
Has she been fired?
Will Ferrell
Oh, she has been banished. She has been. She's been told she will never work in publicity ever again.
Dan Patrick
And by the way, Will was a community ambassador for the LA World cup host committee. About a round of applause for that, Right? What. What exactly did you do?
Darius Rucker
It was.
Will Ferrell
I had to do so much. I. Most of it was in. Around, so far, the stadium. I was. I had to mow the field, had to clean the toilets, of course.
Dan Patrick
Wait, this wasn't like a Kawhi Leonard side job with the Clippers that you had.
Will Ferrell
This was this. I don't know what my responsibilities were. They just. It was. I think it was me. It was Snoop Dogg, of course. Did I meet Snoop Dogg at a. At a commute? At a community ambassador function? No, no. Mia Ham.
Dan Patrick
Okay. Kim Kardashian
Will Ferrell
was. Kim. I don't know.
Dan Patrick
I don't know either.
Darius Rucker
Oh, okay.
Dan Patrick
Like Zac Efron.
Will Ferrell
No.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Will Ferrell
And I just had a tape of video.
Dan Patrick
Zendaya. No. Okay.
Will Ferrell
No.
Dan Patrick
Demi Moore.
Will Ferrell
No.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Will Ferrell
No, no. I was. I was really the only kind of top celebrity. Yeah. I was the big name. I was the big fish.
Dan Patrick
When did you fall in love with soccer?
Will Ferrell
Since I was a kid. You know, I was. I was the weird kid who played AYSO soccer in 1975. Probably like 8 years old. My mom signed me up and said, there's this thing, you want to play soccer? I'm like, do I have to? Because I wasn't like a little league kid or anything. And so I went out and I was, I was, you know, I played goalie at first. I remember I was the only kid who could. Had an attention span long enough to stand in the goal and.
Dan Patrick
But you're athletic.
Will Ferrell
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. I don't know if you do anything well, but you are athletic.
Will Ferrell
I'm athletic. I was captain of the basketball team. Unihit Trojans.
Dan Patrick
Come on now. That felt like it was ceremonial.
Ryan Reynolds (Mint Mobile Advertisement)
No.
Will Ferrell
1.2 points a game. I was, I was a strong sixth man defense. Passing, rebounding.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Will Ferrell
Knew I knew where to pass the ball.
Dan Patrick
Okay. But you know, were you funny back then?
Will Ferrell
Yeah, I was pretty funny.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Will Ferrell
No, I was funny. Of course I was.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Will Ferrell
Dan, what. What are we doing here?
Dan Patrick
Well, no, no, back then, yeah, I
Will Ferrell
was funny, but I was.
Dan Patrick
Were you class clown?
Will Ferrell
I was, I was.
Dan Patrick
This is because I was class clown.
Will Ferrell
You were class clown? Yeah, I was voted best personality.
Dan Patrick
Would you rather be class clown or best personality?
Will Ferrell
Do you know what best personality equals? No girl will date you. Not sexy. Best personality does not get the chicks.
Dan Patrick
But what happened?
Eric Wynalda
You're just.
Will Ferrell
You're like, oh, you're so funny. You've got the best personality. But I don't want to kiss you.
Dan Patrick
So did you have.
Will Ferrell
What about class clown? Yeah, I was a conscientious class clown, I think, because my, my, my mother's in education, so I knew I'd give the teacher a break if they gave me like the stink eye.
Dan Patrick
Okay. Were you a kicker on the football team?
Will Ferrell
I was. I was. From all the soccer.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Will Ferrell
I was. I was a kicker. I was. I still hold the record for most field goals in a career at University High. Granted. We were 18 and 1 my senior
Dan Patrick
year where you probably weren't in field goal range very often.
Will Ferrell
We were not. We were not.
Dan Patrick
So the Hawk, how's it come about?
Will Ferrell
The Hawk comes about really as an exercise. First and foremost, wanting. Trying to think of a thing where I could work and, and shoot in la. That was, that was one goal. But I was always, I'd always kind of thought golf would be, you know, I know golf's been visited a lot, but I was always, I was always watch golf and thought, God, this game is just pure torment. And you know, it'd be fun from a comedic level to get inside the mind of not only a golfer, but the entire family and how there's just no relief. It's funny, you talk to these guys and Ricky Fowler did a, did a bit on our show and I was talking about the US Open out in LA that he almost got. I was like, go, God, Ricky, I was pulling for you. He was like, I was pulling for me. And you realize, like he goes, yeah, there's nothing you. I just, I had my best, my worst day on the, on the last day. Otherwise I played, I played three perfect days. And it, you, you, you realize, oh, if they win three times, four times a year, that's a great year.
Dan Patrick
The.
Will Ferrell
And the rest is, it's just pure torment. They're never happy.
Dan Patrick
But if I said, you know, they have to do it live, like, I have such great admiration if I go see a Broadway show, right. Like, I get emotional because I'm watching like John Lithgow on Broadway recently, right. Like, I'm watching that happen. There's no takes. Yep. You know.
Ryan Reynolds (Mint Mobile Advertisement)
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
What if you had to do your job acting where it's live, not live to tape or. I've done it like snl.
Will Ferrell
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Is.
Will Ferrell
That's a version.
Dan Patrick
Have you done Broadway?
Will Ferrell
I did, I did. I've only done it once. I did George Bush as a one man show and that was 80 minutes of my. Of on stage. And I used to, I used to stand in the wings of the stage every night. Even though this was once again self Inflicted Wound, my idea, I got really excited about, you know, performing George Bush one, one last time. And I would stand in like five minutes before curtain going, will, why did you decide to do this? This is the wor. And by the end of the night I was, I was saying, this is the best and hardest thing you'll ever do. And thank God I'm doing it. So I'd ride that wave before every show and it wouldn't go away. And I did I did what was considered a smaller run, 64 shows, but it's still two and a half months. And. But yeah, it's. It's. It's as thrilling a thing, and you're looking out. And I would have to make sure I didn't make eye contact with the audience because I would get really distracted, and I would look out in the. I'd be like. I'd have a really good show where I felt really confident, like, oh, I'm gonna really play with the audience. And I'd look right into the eyes of. Wait a minute. Is that Serena Williams with Common?
Dan Patrick
Oh, look away.
Will Ferrell
Okay. And then one. One show, I look. I looked. I was like, God, that guy in the fisherman sweater looks a lot like Sting. Like, that is Sting. Okay, focus, focus. You know, so I. I was like, don't look at the crowd.
Dan Patrick
But on Saturday Night Live, you'd see the crowd.
Todd (Dan Patrick Show Producer)
You.
Bank of America Advertisement
Do you.
Will Ferrell
Yes and no. It's. The crowd's kind of hidden from you in a weird way. That studio is really small. It's only about 270 people. And. And you're. You're really focused on those cue cards.
Dan Patrick
So how often do you ignore the cue cards on Saturday night?
Will Ferrell
Hardly ever. It's so. It's so down to the minute.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Todd (Dan Patrick Show Producer)
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
So you can't stray.
Todd (Dan Patrick Show Producer)
You.
Will Ferrell
You really can't. Unless. Unless you're in that zone of where everyone's starting to lose it and you're in. And, you know, we've seen these sketches where people start to break and crack up, and then you could maybe add a line to get things back on track, but no, it's so timed out. It's. It'd be a hard thing to do.
Dan Patrick
It felt like Chris Farley.
Dan Patrick Show Announcer
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Would stray.
Will Ferrell
Chris would stray. Yeah. But we didn't stray that much. We didn't stray.
Dan Patrick
He's the Hawk. Cameos in the series.
Will Ferrell
Ricky, Tony Finau.
Dan Patrick
No, I was asking for one.
Darius Rucker
Oh.
Will Ferrell
Oh.
Dan Patrick
Oh. Well, that was awkward.
Dan Patrick Show Announcer
Yeah.
Will Ferrell
No, we're good, Dan.
Dan Patrick
Okay. What has to happen for Sandler to allow me to be in?
Ben Mahler
I don't know.
Will Ferrell
Say I need to get a piece of paper.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Will Ferrell
Some sort of documentation, because I'm watching
Dan Patrick
your movies now, and I feel like that's a role that you could. Yeah.
Cal Penn
Tackle.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. And we've been friends a long time.
Will Ferrell
We really have. I just don't want. I don't want the Sandman to look at you sideways.
Dan Patrick
Do you think? So would something happen to our friendship if all of a sudden I'm in Your milieu.
Will Ferrell
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
And I steal a scene or something that would know.
Will Ferrell
I would. I would love that. That would be great. That would not be a threat to
Dan Patrick
me because I'm retiring and I'm gonna.
Will Ferrell
You're gonna have a lot of free time.
Dan Patrick
Free time.
Will Ferrell
Have you spoken to Sandler about it?
Dan Patrick
Yes, I have.
Will Ferrell
Oh, and is he. Is he good with it?
Dan Patrick
Green light.
Will Ferrell
Okay.
Dan Patrick
Thumbs up.
Will Ferrell
All right.
Dan Patrick
I think he wants to get rid of me. He's done.
Will Ferrell
It's.
Dan Patrick
It's been 21 movies.
Will Ferrell
That's an incredible run.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. And I have Grown Ups 3 coming up in September, and I can't tell you the plot. I'm not.
Will Ferrell
Oh, come on.
Dan Patrick
I'm not gonna just. I'm not gonna spoil.
Will Ferrell
Just a taste.
Dan Patrick
Nope. Not gonna do it. It's kind of like Godfather 3, but any questions you had from Grown Ups 2 will be answered in Grownups.
Will Ferrell
By the way, Godfather 3, the best of the Godfathers.
Dan Patrick
Let's face it, we had Brian.
Will Ferrell
I skipped a three. Don't even watch the first two.
Dan Patrick
Brian Bumgardner, who played Kevin on the Office. Yeah. He wants to be buried at sea in Lake Tahoe, not a Viking funeral.
Will Ferrell
Oh, that. That's his.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, he told me that last week, and I go, ah, that's dark. But he.
Will Ferrell
Well, he's a decent golfer. I've heard.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. He plays well.
Todd (Dan Patrick Show Producer)
Okay.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Todd (Dan Patrick Show Producer)
Okay.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, he loves it.
Will Ferrell
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Will Ferrell
He loves the game.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Will Ferrell
Buried at sea at Lake Tahoe.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Todd (Dan Patrick Show Producer)
Huh.
Dan Patrick
Like Fredo.
Will Ferrell
Oh, was he? I see. I forget.
Dan Patrick
Fredo was like Tahoe.
Will Ferrell
Oh, that's right. That's right.
Darius Rucker
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
They took him out.
Will Ferrell
They took him out.
Dan Patrick
They took him out and they took him out
Will Ferrell
where? I wonder if they have that. I wonder if that lodge still exists
Dan Patrick
up there at Lake Tahoe. I think it does.
Will Ferrell
Okay.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Will Ferrell
Okay.
Dan Patrick
But you got to sign up for the Fredo ride. Yeah. Yeah. Right this way. It was the Fredo. Right. I. I'm always fascinated when people ask you about sequels, but it feels like Hollywood is all about sequels.
Will Ferrell
Right.
Dan Patrick
Because. All right, you proved. So why don't we. Sequels make me nervous.
Will Ferrell
It's. Yeah. It's a. It's a.
Dan Patrick
Like, I wouldn't want elf2.
Will Ferrell
No. I. I put the kibosh on that.
Dan Patrick
Step Brothers. I would like that because I'm. I was so fascinated.
Will Ferrell
Right.
Dan Patrick
With, you know, the partnership there.
Will Ferrell
Yeah. But, yeah.
Dan Patrick
Like old school. You can't have. We did.
Will Ferrell
We did. We did. I think a very funny sequel to Anchorman. Anchorman two.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Will Ferrell
Even though it doesn't get mentioned as. As much as the first one. Yeah, I mean, it's a. It's a very easy kind of piece of IP that they can go to and they know they'll have a built in audience and they. So that's why you see so many.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, I always wonder about that because we always go, well, it's not as good as the original. Like, Godfather 2 is the only one that I think competes with the original. It feels like. I don't know if any other ones come to mind for you, but when you're talking about.
Will Ferrell
Well, the Star wars ones, I guess, right? Those, those.
Dan Patrick
I never saw them, but they're not really sequels. They're.
Will Ferrell
They're continuations.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, yeah, yeah. I never saw Star Wars. I never saw Lord of the Rings. I never. I never saw any of those things.
Will Ferrell
Booty Call to return to the Booty. That one, I think. That one.
Dan Patrick
I saw that one. Yeah, Yeah, I love that one. Yeah, Jamie Foxx is in that one, I think. Serena Williams.
Will Ferrell
No, he's not in this.
Dan Patrick
He's not in that.
Will Ferrell
They couldn't get him.
Dan Patrick
Kevin Hart says you're the funniest guy I know.
Will Ferrell
It's very sweeter. Kevin, Great. I saw Kevin at the ESPYs.
Dan Patrick
Oh, you did?
Will Ferrell
Backstage, yeah.
Dan Patrick
How were the ESPYs? It's the greatest night in sport.
Will Ferrell
It is the greatest nights in sports.
Dan Patrick
How about twins?
Todd (Dan Patrick Show Producer)
The.
Dan Patrick
The audio and Kevin Hart?
Will Ferrell
Yeah, I love Kevin. I had a great time. The one movie we did and you know, we need to get the band back together. I'm still trying to figure out something with Sandler.
Dan Patrick
Do you want me to help?
Will Ferrell
I would love that. Then. Then we. You could finally. We could finally.
Dan Patrick
But then it'd still be a Sandler movie, huh? Okay, but if you want me to help you get into a Sandler movie.
Will Ferrell
I need part in a Sandler movie.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. Wait, are things going okay in your career?
Will Ferrell
We'll see.
Dan Patrick
Like Hawks, if reviews are great.
Will Ferrell
It's number one on Netflix.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Will Ferrell
Right now.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Will Ferrell
We'll see if it gets picked up. Make sure you watch at home.
Dan Patrick
By the way, where are you going this weekend?
Will Ferrell
I'm gonna go. Well, right after this. And you're invited. I'm going to a corporate event for lay's potato chips.
Dan Patrick
Oh, my God. Thank you.
Todd (Dan Patrick Show Producer)
Thank you.
Will Ferrell
Finally.
Dan Patrick
Yes. Yeah.
Will Ferrell
Yeah. So I'm gonna go do that.
Dan Patrick
Are you dressed? Are you going like that with your Dodge?
Will Ferrell
I'm ready to go. I'm gonna go.
Dan Patrick
That's all you got to Do. And you get to sign autographs.
Will Ferrell
I get this. And I get to take some pictures. Things called selfies.
Dan Patrick
Oh, man. And chips.
Will Ferrell
I'll get plenty of chips.
Dan Patrick
Chips.
Will Ferrell
But this is all a precursor because I'm going to go to the World cup final on Sunday at the Meadowland. Yes.
Dan Patrick
Where are your seats?
Will Ferrell
I have no idea.
Dan Patrick
Are you in a skybox?
Will Ferrell
I probably am.
Dan Patrick
Who are you pulling for?
Will Ferrell
I'm going to pull for Spain because I, you know, I'm. I just kind of want to see a little. Little change. They played so well against France.
Dan Patrick
They did.
Will Ferrell
They were. They were incredible. Now, maybe that was their best game.
Dan Patrick
They are frustratingly great.
Will Ferrell
Yes.
Dan Patrick
Like, they. They just kind of, you know, play great defense. I have Messi.
Will Ferrell
I never have. I never have.
Dan Patrick
Sorry about that.
Will Ferrell
But I talked to Steve Carell, who has met Messi, because Steve was in the. I was in the domestic campaign for Lays Potato Chips. Steve was in the foreign campaign. Apparently, Messi was in. And Messi has a rule that he. When he hits the set, you got 30 minutes with Messi.
Dan Patrick
And that's it.
Will Ferrell
And that's it. So there was a frenzy. Frenzy of activity to hurry up and get all the shots with Messi. Otherwise, he's out.
Ryan Reynolds (Mint Mobile Advertisement)
He's.
Will Ferrell
Vamos.
Dan Patrick
We are meat Friday.
CarMax Advertisement
Me.
Will Ferrell
I'm.
Ben Mahler
This is.
Will Ferrell
I've dreamed of being here for a me Friday, and we got it. We got to start talking about Ryder
Dan Patrick
cup of us going to Writer Cup.
Dan Patrick Show Announcer
Yeah, I know.
Dan Patrick
You brought that up.
Will Ferrell
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
That's in Ireland.
Will Ferrell
That's in Ireland. That's next. That's next. August.
Dan Patrick
When is it usually, Paulie, when is it?
Eric Wynalda
September 17th through 19th, 2027. Adair Manor in Limerick.
Will Ferrell
Adair Manor.
Dan Patrick
I've been to Adair. Gorgeous.
Will Ferrell
Gotta be.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Will Ferrell
There's not a part. Have you ever heard anyone say, oh, that one part of Ireland. Not gorgeous.
Todd (Dan Patrick Show Producer)
Bad.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. No.
Will Ferrell
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. Okay.
Will Ferrell
Are we gonna get.
Dan Patrick
I'll give it some thought.
Veronica Roth
What?
Dan Patrick
Let me get this Sandler movie out of the way. I'll have you know, press. You know, foreign press. I have to do. It's the hall.
Will Ferrell
I want to come do your press with you.
Dan Patrick
Lonnie. Yeah. Lonnie Hawkins and of course, Will is the star. He refuses to be. Lonnie refuses to believe he's anything other than one stroke away from golf. Greatest comeback.
Will Ferrell
I brought hats for everyone.
Dan Patrick
The Hawk premiered on Netflix yesterday. It's very popular.

Have to admit, sometimes I take it for granted. It's always there. It's always going to taste great. It's my friend. It's Miller Time. But let's say you're running late to watch the game and your buddy has already found seeds. That's a Miller Time mvp. How about a person who brings enough Miller Light for everybody? I once had a friend who brought a 12 pack of Miller Lite. But there were only seven beers in it. That he drank the beer before he got there. So he said he brought a 12 pack. It was a seven pack. But I can't blame him. He didn't want to wait. Miller Light. Yes, Dylan. That could have been me, actually. And you're. And you're proud to say that I am an American Pilsner. The original Miller Light. Been doing it since 1975. Miller Time in America this summer. You know. Miller Lights. The perfect beer to kick off the summer. End the summer, start the fall. This "Best of the Week" episode of The Dan Patrick Show seamlessly blends sports analysis with pop culture, signature humor, and compelling guest interviews. Dan and his team welcome major sports figures, entertainment icons, and music legends—including soccer analyst Eric Wynalda, country star Darius Rucker, and actor/comedian Will Ferrell. The show explores themes from the tactical brilliance of Spain’s national soccer team to the realities of the American soccer system, tales from a musician’s life on the road, the enduring appeal of musical hits, and laughter-laced Hollywood stories.
Guest: Eric Wynalda (former USMNT player, Sirius XM host)
[03:20–18:43]
"Spain reminds me of Floyd Mayweather, just unbelievably, tactically defensive and great at it." (03:30)
"When France tried to play defense, they made them chase in such a way that they were all tired out by the time they got the ball. There is a design to that." (05:26)
"You have a goalkeeper with six shutouts...their 37th consecutive win at international football—it doesn't happen." (07:00)
"France is out and Spain is good. They're very good. That's the reason why they won the Euros. ... It's been an amazing ride." (07:08)
"They've gotten a little fortunate with the referee calls...England gets seven fouls before they get a yellow card. Argentina, 22 and a half. Well, okay, something's going on." (07:18)
"Favoritism has been alive and well with this Argentine setup." (08:05)
"When you go back, you know, 10 seconds and you're re-refereeing the game, that's where we've gone too far. ... It's getting to be quite a mess. I hope they fix it." (10:07)
"America is trying to figure out how to increase the numbers, which is not helping...We charge too many people when we should be thinning the herd, finding the talent, and locking in on that. If we ever did that, Dan, we'd win the World Cup." (13:46)
"My academy is all about finding that kid who can't afford it or is just super talented and isn't aware of how talented they are. ... I pay for this. These kids don't pay for anything." (16:43)
"I feel bad for those kids because they're being told they're going to be something they're not, and they're paying through the nose...The rest of the world doesn't do that." (13:46)
"It's Groundhog Day every four years." (15:54)
"Even though we have a national team, I think I could put together a group of 16, 17 year olds and beat our national team. That's just me. Maybe I'm being arrogant, I don't know." (13:46)
Guest: Darius Rucker (musician, Hootie & the Blowfish/country star)
[23:17–46:09]
"This time around, getting married... you and Emily. Charleston. In February. Next February." (24:30)
"I played 110 shows last year. What am I doing? ... I'm really starting to like being home a lot." (29:34)
"For us, I think the reason we were going so hard is because we could...When it really got bad, when it exploded, like when we could afford beer, it got bad, man." (26:08)
"New Orleans and Las Vegas. We had a rule, two days, three days, tops. Because if not...you end up doing stuff in New Orleans that just didn't really happen, but it happened." (26:40)
"It was truly overnight when I stopped really partying hard." (27:05)
"If I don't play 'Wagon Wheel', I might get some DMs...It would be a riot if I didn't play it." (45:00)
"I'm one of those guys. I love it. The second you hit that note and that crowd, I love it, man. ... I'll play them the rest of my life and be happy about it." (45:17)
"We're no strangers to love, you know the rules and so do I..." (31:31)
"Detroit Rock City by Kiss... one of my absolute favorite songs of all time." (34:03)
"Paul McCartney knows my name. ... My daughter Danny looks over me, goes, 'Dad, are you crying?' And yeah." (41:22–41:27)
Guest: Will Ferrell (actor, comedian, soccer superfan)

Wynalda on U.S. Soccer:
"It's Groundhog Day every four years." (15:54)
Darius Rucker on signature hits:
"I know artists who hate playing it...But I love it. The second you hit that note and that crowd, I love it, man." (45:17)
Will Ferrell on comedic roots:
"Would you rather be class clown or best personality? ... Best personality does not get the chicks." (57:53–58:04)
Rucker on meeting Paul McCartney:
