Getting to a great idea is hard in college. Nonsensical essays, cringe inducing presentations, and seemingly unsolvable problem sets. But then the first thought becomes a final thesis. Jumbled slides transform into a polished keynote. And that midterm assignment gets a lot less mid because the road to great ideas is littered with bad ones. Your initial reaction upon hearing the news that LeBron James is going to Philly? Shocked because I wanted him to go back To Cleveland. I mean, he has no affiliation with the 76ers, but the number one knock on LeBron. Yo, man, you always stacking your team. He stacked it in Miami, he stacked it in Cleveland, he stacked it in la. Now he's stacking it in Philly. He's always stacked his team.
Dan Patrick
I have no problem with what LeBron James did. None. At this stage in your career, you can do whatever you want. You want to go back home. Just to go back home. Now, you do have a great chance of winning with that lineup. If he wanted to go back to Miami because why not go to Miami? You want to go to Philadelphia because you have the best chance of win. You've earned that right. Chasing rings. If Giannis didn't want to go to Miami, he would have told the Bucks, I don't want to go to Miami. Why did he go to Miami? He probably thought he had a better chance of winning there. If the Knicks didn't win the title this year, I think Giannis would be a New York Knick and Carl Anthony Towns wouldn't be there. Or LeBron might be a New York Knickerbocker, but I don't know. If you go, I have a chance to decide where I want to go. Let me go to a worst situation. Who does that? You know, I'm thinking about going to the Nets. If he had gone to the Nets, well, he's just going to pat his stats. Michael Jordan went to the Wizards. Why? Because he wanted to have part ownership of an NBA team. Is anybody critical of Mike? Because he went to the Wizards. It wasn't for basketball reasons. It was for business reasons. And the business of winning another title is what LeBron is all about. I have no problem with it. If he had gone to Golden State, we would have said, oh, okay, Durant had to go there to win titles. You, you're going to go. It didn't matter if he had gone to Cleveland. I think people would have been okay with it. Philly hadn't been to Philly. They haven't won a title in over three decades. Haven't been to the finals since what, 2000, 2001. I don't have a problem with it. Chasing rings. We chastise him because he doesn't have the rings that Mike has or Kobe has. And now he wants to go get one more. He took the minimum. There are quarterbacks in college making more money than LeBron James. Salary with the Sixers, I'm okay with that. You sacrificed. And yes, he's going to a Lineup and it'll be similar to when he went with Miami. It'll take a little while for them to kind of feel each other out, understand what you do, how you do it, when you do it. I can take over. You take over. But I'm not worried about touches with LeBron. He already proved that with Luca and Austin Reeves, I can figure this out. We marvel at his basketball IQ. Let's give him credit for that basketball IQ. He wants to win and also knows he's 41. He also knows that he's got Tyrese Maxey, who is wonderful. And now you bring in Jaylen Brown. This doesn't happen without an assist from the Celtics. Still mind boggling. You trade one of the better players in the NBA in your division. And I think July 6, when Jalen Brown was traded to the 76ers, is when LeBron changed his mind. He wasn't going to Philly, in my opinion. Here is his agent, Rich Paul.
T-Mobile Ad Narrator
When did it start? The scale start tipping toward Philly like 55%. You know, when was like, you know what?
Dan Patrick
I'm leaning toward Philly.
Covino
Or.

Or now.
Dan Patrick
It's more and more and more.
Charles Barkley
No, I think, I think that.
Dan Patrick
I mean, the eyeball came after, obviously, the trade like the Brown.
State Farm Ad Narrator
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
To even be really, really considered. Max Kellerman on there, on the podcast. Yes. July 6th. July 6th is when all of this started to formulate. I think because LeBron went, okay, Embiid, I can't prop him up. Maxi and Edgecombe, they're really good. This team isn't better than Miami's going to be or Cleveland's going to be or Golden State's going to be. Now I get Jalen Brown, top five, top 10 player. I got something here. I got it. I got a chance to win at least one more title. The basketball world would explode if he got to six titles. But it just feels like LeBron's doing it. Therefore, there has to be a negative attitude. You know what, what's the negative part of this? Oh, he's chasing titles. Okay. That's what you play for. If he said, hey, I want money. Oh, don't you have enough? You made a half a billion playing in the NBA salary wise. So he's not going to win no matter what. But. But that's. You have to accept that if you're LeBron, you know, it's not going to be popular. You know, people are always going to have a negative slant on this. Well, Mike never did this. Mike came back to get part ownership of the Wizards. Great business decision. LeBron's chasing a title. I think that's admirable. If you look at. He goes to Cleveland, he doesn't win. Yeah, but he went back home. If he went to Miami. Oh, you know what? Maybe going back feels bad about leaving them in the first place. Hey, you know, it'll be a great story. Hey, when you're old, you go retire in Miami. Philly. Wait a minute. He actually cares about winning. Wait a minute. How dare him? Oh, he knows nothing about Philadelphia. Okay, remember the story that came out before he made the decision? LeBron and his wife were touring schools in Philadelphia. Remember that big story? He was there for a charity, I think, thing. But I think they were like, hey, he's looking at schools. Maybe he looked at those school systems and now he's coming back because maybe his daughter can go to school in Philadelphia. But I loved it, thought it was great. I think it's great for the NBA. The NBA was the big winner, in my opinion. I get LeBron at 7:30 Eastern TV, prime time for everybody. This is great. Schedule's gonna come out Knicks, Sixers, probably opening night, Christmas, LeBron again, maybe against Golden State, maybe against Miami, maybe against the Lakers. And this is great. This is this perfect for the NBA. So I loved it. Now, okay, do I appreciate LeBron more than the average fan or media person? Yes, I do. Do I think Mike's the best player I ever saw? Yes. But I can think both. I mean, it's okay to think both.
Marvin
How dare you?
Dan Patrick
I know. It's okay. Oh, yes, Marvin.
Marvin
When I say I like both Michael Jordan and LeBron James, people look at me like I'm nuts. Like, man, I just like both of them.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ad Narrator
I like him.
Dan Patrick
Yes. It's okay. Best and worst of the weekend. What you saw that you liked, you didn't like. 8, 7, 7, 3 DP. Show operator. Tyler's sitting by. He'll take your phone calls. It was fun. It was fun. Just talking basketball possibilities here. And it still went back to the Celtics. I know you got a couple of first round picks. I know you got a couple of second round picks, but it was a salary dump. Like, if you would have said to the Sixers, how do you get out from underneath? James Harden, Paul George. And they did it. And I truly believe now, once again, I don't have any information on this. If Darius Garland was still on the Cavaliers and not James Harden, that's. I think LeBron would have gone to Cleveland now. It would have been close because I got Jaylen Brown now. So LeBron can kind of see this and he doesn't have to be the lead singer. He can be the bass player. It's so some nights he can play the tambourine if he wants to. He doesn't have to be the lead singer here. And I think Cleveland, he could have done that. And Darius Garland I like and Donovan Mitchell resigns and you got bigs up front, I understood that. But having James Harden, that's a non starter for me if I'm trying to win a championship. Miami, I don't know what the roster is going to look like. Pat Riley always does a wonderful job in filling out that roster. Philly's ready to win now and I got the odds. These are the updated odds from draftkings. Just got them this morning. Spurs and Thunder still the big favorites to win the title next year. Sixers in the Knicks are tied at plus 900. Spurs, Thunder plus 270. Then the Celtics plus 1300. But it was fun, you know, big surprise. Even when Paulie said it, I was like, man, the way he's saying it, I'm going to be surprised. And then I thought is it Golden State? Because I never had Golden State in the picture. I know there were people host who had that last week. They're like, I'm hearing, I'm hearing there was no information. So whoever you were hearing it from, you weren't hearing it from the people who were going to make the decision. And LeBron kept it in his head or I'm sure his house, but he's not letting it out. But I think July 6th is when LeBron went, wait a minute, let me look at that lineup. I wouldn't be surprised if LeBron didn't have a whiteboard with all the lineups, starting lineup, roster, how much money like a GM would and said that gives me the best chance. Now it looks like he'll play one and he had that other option. So he might look at this as a two year window if he wins a title this year. Let's just do that. Bigger picture now he's got five. There is no way he's retiring without one more shot to get six. We'll come up with a poll question. Yeah, Paulie going back to that trade
Paulie
with Jalen Brown from the Celtics to the Sixers, those draft picks that the Celtics are getting, it's a 2028 first round pick. So it doesn't help them for two more years. And you would think that the Sixers are going to be really good. So that pick might be the 26th pick of the draft.
Dan Patrick
I mean, even if you don't like Jalen Brown or you didn't like him in the locker room or Jason Tatum, or send him to Sacramento, send him to Phoenix, send him somewhere, I, the only way he can hurt me is in the Finals. But a salary dump. I understand it. We said it at the time. You're going to have two guys, you're going to be really top heavy. But they are good. They can get you to the East Eastern Finals, they can get you to the NBA Finals, they can help you win a title. But still mind boggling out of all of this, you trade him to the Sixers. Well, you now get to see Jalen Brown and you get to see LeBron James because you sent Jalen Brown to the 76ers. Brad Stevens does a wonderful job. I just, maybe I'm not smart enough to understand how brilliant this move was. Yes, Todd, is there even a small
Marvin
part where LeBron's like, been there, done
Dan Patrick
that, winning in Miami and Cleveland, or
Marvin
it's strictly like, you just go. He would have gone back if he thought Cleveland or Miami had a little
Dan Patrick
bit better of a chance than Philly. I think he wanted to go where he could win. That's what this came down to, plain and simple. Family, his wife and daughter stay in la. He comes out here for business. Bronnie's still going to be with the Lakers. This is a business trip. He's on a business trip this entire season. His business is to win another championship. I have no problem chasing rings. If anything, he could have kept it really easy, simple, and retired in a nice, polite way. And everybody would have given him a round of applause and say, thanks, it was great seeing you. You're no Michael Jordan. He chose, he chose to go to a place he hadn't been. And he knows the expectations are through the roof. So he, he, he had attacked that. I love it. I think it's great. And it's great for the NBA and great for. I can't wait for this. Opening night, they play the Knicks. They beat the Knicks. 70 wins, question mark. Or if they lose. Yeah, I knew this was going to be a failure. I knew it. Can't, you know, sharing the ball. And let me see how you're playing in April and May and June because it's going to be rough at times, it'll be ugly at times, but if they get magic like they did late in the season when Embiid started to play really well and Maxi. And all of a sudden you go, philadelphia is gonna beat the Celtics. And now you get LeBron and you get a good LeBron with those kind of glimpses, those hints of being great again. I wouldn't be surprised if he's top five in assist this year because he'll want to. He led the NBA in assist before. If he wants to do it, he can still do it. Yes, Marvin.
Marvin
I think the underrated part is I think he's going to help on the boards. I think he's gonna average eight or nine rebounds where I think that's such an underrated part, where it's like, man, he's gonna help on the glass. I think he's gonna play the five, play some small ball. Okay, I'm excited.
Dan Patrick
All right. Well, we were kind of on a roll there and you gave me rebounds here. I mean, what is this? Angel Reese.
Marvin
So watch what happens if they lose a game.
Charles Barkley
Oh, man.
Marvin
If they had somebody on the glass, it always comes down to something small.
Dan Patrick
Okay, has Angel Reese scored yet in the All Star game? Be nice.
Marvin
Be nice.
Dan Patrick
She was the wrong person to be in that kind of All Star game where they're athletically talented on the offensive side of the ball.
Paulie
Yes, Paul, all star games in all sports but basketball, they're not conducive to power. Forwards like lamarcus Aldridge isn't running the show at an All Star game and he was a good player. He doesn't get the ball enough.

Charles Barkley, hall of Famer, Inside the NBA how's your summer going?
Charles Barkley
I play golf every day. Have a great damn summer. I don't do anything. I try to stay off tv. I'm only doing this because of you. I try to stay off tv. I play golf every day. I don't want people to get sick of me. So I do, like one thing every two or two or three weeks. But the rest of the time, I'm playing golf every day. I'm taking the day off because it's raining. So I'm gonna go get a mani, pedi and a massage because it's raining like hell here in Philadelphia all day. That's my day today, Dan.
Dan Patrick
No, that's not a bad day.
Charles Barkley
Oh, I'm going as soon as I hang out with you. I'm gonna go get a mani pedi, I'm gonna go get a massage, and then I'm gonna chill and I'm gonna back on the golf course tomorrow. But it rained like hell yesterday and today, so I'm back on the golf course tomorrow.
Dan Patrick
All right, well, maybe you should have stayed in Arizona where you could have been able to play. Or is it too hot out there for you?
Charles Barkley
It's like 120 degrees every day right now. It's brutal.
Dan Patrick
So how's the morale in Philadelphia here?
Charles Barkley
Oh, it's off the charts right now, Dan. It's the people are going crazy. They should be excited. You know, getting LeBron is a. Is a coup. So they're going to be favorites probably in the east on paper, but, man, it is going crazy here, I mean, because I think it caught everybody by surprise, to be honest with you. Even myself. You know, I. I was hoping he went back to Cleveland, but, man, it is on fire here right now, you know, 247 LeBron right now. Ever since the story broke last week.
Dan Patrick
Feels like you had a problem with it.
Charles Barkley
I didn't have a problem with it. I want him to go to Cleveland. He has no affiliation to Philly. What's really funny, I guess the story broke yesterday that he's not even going to live in Philly. He's going to live in New York and helicopter back back in for practicing games. So the city is kind of pissed right now. I was like, I. I told y' all he didn't have no affiliation with Philly. That's why I was shocked he came here. Yeah, I was. You know, it was so funny. I was playing golf yesterday early, and my phone starts going crazy. Like, can you believe this? I like, what y' all just got. LeBron be happy. He's not even gonna live here. He's gotta live in New York and take a helicopter in for practice and games. I like, I just started laughing because you can't make this stuff up.
Dan Patrick
Why don't you let him stay at your place?
Charles Barkley
It's a condo, Dan. You know, I'm a firm believer in. The hermit was ruled one house, one car. You don't need more than one house. That's a waste of money. Don't waste your money on jewelry. I drive a Kia and an Explorer. That's all you need, brother. Don't waste your money on cars, you young dummies.
Dan Patrick
You were on with Stephen A. Smith. That's why I thought you had a problem, that LeBron's always stacking his teams.
Charles Barkley
Yeah, that's been one of my critic. Well, most people criticize him for that. He always stacks his team.
Dan Patrick
But what's wrong with wanting to build a team that can win a championship or going to.
Charles Barkley
First of all. Let's see. There you go. He didn't build a team. He manufactured.
Dan Patrick
He built a team in Los Angeles. They were bad before he got there,
Charles Barkley
and he and his agency forced him to trade for Anthony Davis, who was ran by his group.
Dan Patrick
Okay, but he didn't. He didn't go to a team that was.
Charles Barkley
No, he did. He's. Listen, Anthony Davis. Everybody in the league would have won an Anthony Davis. Plus, specifically said he has to go to the Lakers.
Marvin
That.
Charles Barkley
That. That's. That's. That's a fact, Dan.
Dan Patrick
But you still had to pull off the trade to get him. They didn't say, oh, here you go.
Marvin
He would.
Charles Barkley
He said he would only go to the Lakers. He said he would, like, everybody wanted Anthony Davis. But he said, clutch said, no, he could only go to the Lakers. So it is what it is. It's a fair criticism. Yeah. Everybody wanted Anthony Davis. Anthony Davis specifically said, because of clutch, I will only go to the Lakers. So you think that's naturally organic? No, that is stacking your team.
Dan Patrick
But that's LeBron's power, okay? And he deserves that credit that guys want to play with him.
Charles Barkley
And we can't criticize it if we think it's unfair.
Dan Patrick
What's unfair about wanting to go better your life? Like, he.
Charles Barkley
No, no, no, no, no, no, you're not. You shouldn't be guaranteed a championship. One of the reasons Michael Jord is to go, he got beat in the head. He kept, you know, you know what? I'm gonna get bigger, stronger. That to me, is the way I would like to see it done. That's why I admire Dirk Nowitzki. He's like, you know what? I'm not going anywhere. We just gonna keep getting better. That's why Steph Curry, same thing. They never. He's like, you know what? We got a team. They were not any good in the beginning. Then Clay got good, Draymond got good. Iguodala, everybody. So, listen, we can disagree. I'm not mad at LeBron, but I could, you know, I'm not gonna do the Stepford Wife thing. Like, all LeBron and his friends do. Like, these guys on television now. Like, I don't want to upset LeBron because I wanted him to talk to me and I wanted him to do interviews. Like, if you don't, like, that's the one. You know, LeBron's a great dude, too, but the people around him and now guys on television, they're like Stepford Wives. It's like you have to say LeBron's the greatest ever, or, like, he not going to talk to you and you're committing treason. Like, like I said, LeBron is the third best basketball greatest basketball player I ever seen. But when you're around them stepper wives that around LeBron and people on television like that, they want to be friends with him. Like, I think me and. Me and LeBron, I think we're cool, but I don't have to say he's the greatest basketball player ever. I don't. I mean, I don't think I'm committing treason.
Dan Patrick
I just didn't. I don't have a problem if he wanted to go to Philly. I think it's a big risk, but it's his best chance to win a championship.
Charles Barkley
I don't agree with that. I actually think if he Went to the Cavs, they would have had the best team in the East.
Dan Patrick
They got James Harden. I don't think he wanted to play with James Harden.
Charles Barkley
James Harden, not even on the team right now.
Dan Patrick
Well, but they're. They're. They're talking to him about a contract.
Charles Barkley
Let me tell you something. We can disagree. I mean, this is all that's. We all have an opinion. I thought if LeBron went to the Cows, they would have the best team in the East. That's just my personal opinion.
Dan Patrick
If Darius Garland was there, I would say yes. Not. Not James Harden.
Charles Barkley
Well, you don't have to play James that much if LeBron is there. And also, think about this. There are a lot of questions about this 76ers team. Can LeBron and Joel Embiid stay healthy? That's a big question. LeBron hasn't played a full season in five years. Joel Embiid ain't never played a full season. Those are fair questions. And what's scary, man? One of the dark secrets nobody's talking about. The Eastern Conference might be better than the Western Conference right now. The Eastern Conference, like I say, can LeBron stay healthy, which he hasn't done in five years. Can Joel stay healthy, which he hasn't done ever. The Eastern Conference is quietly become the better conference. I'm trying to think. There's no team in the east that's bad. There's not one single team in the east you can say is bad. I mean. And can Joel and LeBron stay healthy? Man, I'm telling you, Dan, people aren't even talking about. They look at OKC and the spurs, rightfully so. They're head and shoulders. But the Knicks, Boston, Atlanta, Indiana, Orlando, the Wizards, man, the east, the only bad team is probably the Brooklyn Nets.
Dan Patrick
They are bad. Yeah.
Charles Barkley
Oh, and let me tell you something. I think the Chicago. I said this. Oh, I think the Chicago Bulls got the best rookie in the NBA. When I was talking to coaches and general managers, which I do, and I always keep our conversations private because it's a private conversation. They're like, who would you take the number one pick? I said, Caleb Wilson. They're like, what do you mean? I says, hey, I like the Boston. I like Peterson. But the one guy who I think. And like I said, we're all kind of thinking about the future. There's no player I would have taken before Caleb Wilson. Not one. Because the way he. His athletic ability now, like Peterson and Demonso, they're probably better scorers at this stage, but he can learn how to shoot. And let me tell you something, from an athletic point where you can go out, 1, 2, 3, 4. Ain't nobody more talented than Caleb Wilson, period.
Dan Patrick
Talking to Charles Barkley, hall of Famer, I'm still trying to understand what the Celtics did and are doing. Are the Celtics better now than they were a month ago?
Charles Barkley
Dan, let me tell you something. You can go out and get drunk all night long, and we can wake up the next day, and that still won't make no damn sense to me. Whatever. And listen, what's. Okay, you don't like Jalen Brown. I get that. They clearly didn't. But I'm not trading him to a team I got to play five times a year and got to beat in the playoffs. The Celtics are not better. And I, I, I don't understand. Like I say, okay, you want to trade a player, I have no problem with that. And Jalen's a hell of a player. I'm not trading him into my division. I'm trading him out west more than anything. So I, I have no idea what the Celtics are doing. And then you hear people talk about the money, Paul Jones making a lot of money. So you can't say they didn't. Because about that I heard, I hear guys talking about, well, they didn't want to pay Jalen Brown. I'm like, Paul Jar's making $50 million
Dan Patrick
a year, but only for one more year.
Charles Barkley
Two more.
Dan Patrick
Well, there's an option, but, well, he
Charles Barkley
gonna damn sure take the option.
Dan Patrick
Well, jail, Jalen is, you know, you're locked in for three more years, and Philly is going to extend him as well. They're not trading for him and then letting him go.
Charles Barkley
Well, so, okay, but at that point, they didn't know they were going to get LeBron either. So that trade, even though Jalen Brown's a better player, you still bought back $100 million for the next couple years. I think Jaylen makes a little bit more, but I didn't understand that trade whatsoever.
Dan Patrick
Your guy Shaq said he thinks Joel Embiid is going to have a great year and he's going to be the best big man in the game.
Charles Barkley
Well, what, somebody gonna kill the joker? Somebody kill the joker right now? Listen. No, I think the, the two winners in this trade are Maxi and Embiid in the trade and LeBron because they're a better team. And Joel, he's got to be the fourth best player because Maxi and Brown are the two best players. They're the two best players on the team. LeBron's the third best player if he's healthy, and he's the probably the guy who can play without the ball the most. It's going to be some growing pains with this team because they all need the ball to be successful. But make no doubt about it, Brown and Maxi are the two best players on the team. Joel just got to get healthy and he can be the fourth best player on the team. Now that's going to be an adjustment for him because he just going to play defense and rebound and he gonna have to sacrifice, he probably gonna have to sacrifice the most because they're not going to walk with them three thoroughbreds. They're not going to walk the ball up and down the court and let him post up. He's gonna have to concentrate on defense and rebounding, so he's gonna have to sacrifice the most. But the number one thing he's got to do is get healthy. Then he's never played. I mean, I, I, I'm not even sure I shouldn't talk talk like that. I mean, I'm pretty sure he hasn't played a full season in five or six years. So the notion that he's going to be healthy, you're gonna have to wait and see. And same thing with LeBron, but man, it's not going to be as easy to just put those four guys out there and think the Sixers are going to win the championship.
Dan Patrick
Okay, let's match up the Knicks with the Sixers. Who do you like?
Charles Barkley
You know, I think they're gonna miss Mitchell Robinson. I do, I think they're gonna miss Mitchell Robinson. I think that's a Pickham series. I think that the now the Pistons got to figure out what to do. I didn't even mention them when I mentioned him earlier. They got to figure out the Jalen Duran situation. But the east is going to be fun to watch, man, even though they got LeBron and Jalen, that don't. The Sickers are not going to have a cakewalk. It's going to be a huge adjustment for those guys because all four of those guys need the basketball to be successful. And to ask guys like that say, hey, I need you to just play defense a lot. And like I said, it's going to be the hardest for Joel because he, he going to get the ball the least out of all those four guys. Does he have the mindset to be like, you know what, let me just play defense and rebound. And some nights I'm gonna get big. A few nights I'm Gonna get big numbers, but I just got to play defense and rebound, and that is not going to be easy. But the number one question with the Sixers is their health. Can. Can Embiid and LeBron, can they be healthy for 82 games, which right now the heart is probably a hard no. And then what position are they going to be in? Because they're going to have to. If those guys are unhealthy, they're going to have to win three series on the road against really good teams because. Amen. Indiana might be the sleeper in the east next year.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Charles Barkley
They get Zubaz back, you know, so. But it's. The east is going to be very interesting going forward.
Dan Patrick
We missed you in Tahoe. We were out there and you. You were really busy, apparently.
Charles Barkley
Well, that's called winning money, Dan. I was winning money. So I was like, when you win money, you have to. You have a choice between doubling down on 11 or doing interviews. And you get that face card on that 11, because you always double down on 11 and you always double down on 10 if the dealer don't have a face card showing. You know, Lake Talk was very profitable for Chuck this year, Dan.
Dan Patrick
Well, your scores on the course weren't.
Charles Barkley
I beat you.
Dan Patrick
I wouldn't. I wouldn't say that too loudly.
Charles Barkley
That, you know, listen, as long as I beat you and Grand Hill. Because Grand Hill's a coward, too. He's a coward.
Dan Patrick
Why is Grant Hill a coward?
Charles Barkley
He won't play with me. He could see. I want. Dan. I'm like a gunfighter. I want to look you in your eyes. I want to look in your eyes. Grant Hill won't play because he know he can't beat me. So I. I want to look y' all in the eyes. I'm like an old school gunfighter. I want to play with you. Like Anthony Anderson. He came out there all blustery, and then I got to look him in the eyes on the first tee and he crumbled like a.
Dan Patrick
You're. You're sounding like you're, you know, young tiger here. Yeah. A guy who's going to go get a Manny Petty acting like a big, tough gunslinger.
Charles Barkley
I know who to go up against, though. I said you, Grant Hill and Anthony Anderson. I didn't go out there and grab the heavy gun fighter. I went out and grabbed the bottom of the bag.
Dan Patrick
Of course you did. Why didn't you go after Dylan Dreyer and Rich Eisen next time?
Charles Barkley
You know, I think Dylan, I love her, but I think I'm Better than rich Eisenhower. I am. I think I'm better than Rich.
Dan Patrick
I think he finished last.
Charles Barkley
Did he?
Dan Patrick
I think, you know.
Charles Barkley
Hey, listen, you should be.
Dan Patrick
Charles, you play golf all the time. You're a former professional. You make it sound like, you know, we should be surprised that you can play decent golf. You play all the time.
Charles Barkley
I've been. Dan, listen. I've been to hell and back.
Dan Patrick
You have. You have.
Charles Barkley
Shout out to my coach. Dan. Early. Dan. Dan. I've been to hell and back. I played one handed. I played left. I have done it all. I have done it all, man. I. Listen, there was a time when I quit, when I would had to yield for 20 some years. It was brutal. Jackson Corbin, Auburn. Wardell Amigo. That was awesome to watch Sunday. We so proud of that kid. You know, Auburn won back to back national championship because of him. He was the leader of the team, but man, I spent my whole Sunday around watching him at the 3M. That was beautiful to watch. So. War damn eagle to our nation, brother.
Dan Patrick
All right, well, good luck with your Manny Petty, tough guy, and we'll. I'll tell Fritzi to leave you alone for the next month or so.
Charles Barkley
Well, there's nothing happening in basketball.
Covino
Okay.
Dan Patrick
But this did. And that's why we were reaching out and I hate.
Charles Barkley
And I'm here, Dan.
Dan Patrick
I know. I appreciate it.
Charles Barkley
I've never turned you down, Dan.
Dan Patrick
I know that.
Charles Barkley
I'm not doing any more interviews for like the next month probably, unless somebody in the NBA get traded, which is. Which I will take. I will tell you this, Dan. The Jalen Duran thing is interesting.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. I don't want him at that price.
Charles Barkley
That's the key. But some, you know, there could be a team that's desperate that might want to pay him that price.
Dan Patrick
No, no, the salon is. The salon's waiting for you. Okay, you go.
Charles Barkley
Okay, brother.
Albertsons and Safeway Ad Narrator
All right.
Charles Barkley
But first of all, I don't do salons. I. I don't have that type of money. I go to a spa. I mean, I just go to a regular nail place. Come on, Dan.
Dan Patrick
Thank you, Charles.
Charles Barkley
All right, brother. Appreciate y'. All.

Let me start with the Baker Mayfield situation. We've discussed this. I think that he has performed admirably for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. We Always attach the salary, though. It's okay. Is it commensurate to what you're getting paid? It's a sliding scale. BAKER Mayfield at 36, $35 million a year, okay, had a good year last year, previous year, had a great year. You got a division that's getting tougher and not a foregone conclusion where you just win nine games, you're going to win this division. Baker Mayfield thinks he's being disrespected, and he said the quiet part out loud.
Baker Mayfield
Disappointing in that regard, to not have, you know, to feel disrespect a little bit. And that's really the disappointing part, to feel undervalued after, you know, thinking you've earned it. This is not a poor me thing. It's. There's a lot other people that have it way worse off, but I can sit here and look at other quarterbacks and peers and evaluate myself based on that and put myself in certain categories that I deserve to be compensated for that. And I think I'm a franchise quarterback. I've been told I'm a franchise quarterback. It's been said publicly from ownership down here. And so to not have a deal done is very disappointing.
Dan Patrick
Now, I don't know if somebody followed up in the media and said, okay, where would you place yourself? Because I would want to know if I look at some of these salaries, Jalen hurts is at $51 million. Is he. Jalen Hurts, Is he Sam Darnold? Sam Darnold's 35 million, so he's already in that category. Sam won a Super bowl, but is he Daniel Jones? He's making around 44, 45. Deshaun Watson, 44, 45 million. Like, where do you place yourself? Would be my question, just so I would get an understanding. And I don't know about this business philosophy, this strategy with Baker Mayfield, unless he's gotten to the point where, hey, this is training camp. Vita Vea wants out. Like, things are starting to unravel just a little bit. And I don't know if saying it publicly, hey, I'm being disrespected, if that helps, because it's personal for you. It's not personal for management. Ownership, like, they can't attach emotion to this. They have to be very pragmatic and saying, hey, here's. Here's where we see you. Here's the slot, here's the sweet spot, and what's Baker Mayfield going to do? You're going to have to play out this year. Then you can go wherever you want to go after that. But they can franchise tag you and then you might be there for, you know, two years. This year's salary, and then I think franchise tag is around 46, 47 million for quarterbacks. But if I'm Tampa, are we rebuilding? And maybe we don't even know we're rebuilding. How good are we? Yes, you lost Mike Evans. Still a good team, but that division is going to be a lot more challenging, I think. But we'll check in Rick Stroud, who we haven't had on in a little while. He's their great reporter in Tampa. He'll join us coming up in a little bit. Poll question for the first hour of the program is what?
Todd
Dylan, we got one from Todd to kick things off. Baker Mayfield. Dot, dot, dot. Preach on, preacher or keep it in house, dude.
Dan Patrick
Well, this is Baker Mayfield. Like, that personality is what you love about make Baker Mayfield. And you know, if you look at the headline, it's not he went, didn't go scorched earth. But you got that feeling from the headlines, like, oh, whoa, yeah, disrespected, okay. I mean, that's the word that jumps out there. But this is who Baker Mayfield is. He's out in front. He's going to say what he feels. If he feels disrespected, okay, then figure out how do you respect him. What is a respectable number there? That's what I would be curious about. But we see these other quarterbacks. I mean, Dak Prescott's never been the best quarterback in the NFL, but he's the highest paid. I mean, do other quarterbacks feel disrespected because of that? Kirk Cousins always got a fully guaranteed contract. He wasn't anywhere near the best quarterback in the NFL. It's all about timing and it's about leverage. Now, if Baker Mayfield had not last year's season last season, but the season before that, now you probably have a little bit more leverage. Is he a $45 million quarterback? Maybe in their eyes, probably. So is he Jalen Hurts? Probably not. Yeah. Dylan.
Apple College Ad Narrator
Yeah.
Todd
It's kind of funny because I think it was 2018, Matt Ryan became the first $30 million quarterback. And now only eight years later, that is like considered sort of lower end of the barrel money for a quarterback.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. Well, look at receivers. When somebody got to 20 or 21 and we went, oh, my goodness, and then it was 30, now we got defensive players making 40, it's going to continue to go up. The question is, and you know, we've said this before about Jerry Jones with Micah Parsons. He could have gotten him at a cheaper price earlier, chose to play the game and then decided to trade him. But he could have kept him if he wanted to. It's rare when you say, you know what, let's see how this plays out. And it, you know, plays out where you get somebody for less than what they were negotiating for. So if I'm Tampa, I got to decide do I want Baker Mayfield? I got to decide at what price. I want Baker Mayfield because the following year he's going to be more expensive just because of, you know, the quarterback, next guy up mentality. Can you get him for less than $50 million at the going rate? If I'm Baker Mayfield or his agent, I'm better than Daniel Jones. You can count on me over desean Watson. Although we have to kind of take desean Watson out of this because that was desperation by the Cleveland Browns. The Colts, I still don't understand why they did this with Daniel Jones, but you know that that's okay. It's their money, their quarterback. But I think Baker Mayfield probably thinks he's a 50 million dollar year quarterback. But if Jalen Hurts is at 51 and he's accomplished, I can't pay him more than that. Although that doesn't mean he. He's not going to want more than that.
Paulie
Yeah, Paulie, it does seem like a prudent move by Tampa. If they regress. If he regresses Baker Mayfield, they're not locked into anything. Yeah. Will they have to pay him 15 million more on the next contract? Four years, 200 million. Yeah. But the danger is he balls out and it's complete free agent and Pittsburgh calls or another team calls.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, yeah. I don't know the philosophy, but that's why we'll have Rick Stroud on of what is the mentality of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers? I also, I get a kick out of, and I understand the hype machine. You got to report on things or you got to kind of create things. NFL reporters talking about, somebody had a great day in camp. Somebody threw two interceptions. Somebody threw three touchdown passes. I want to take you back to when Jamar Chase came out of LSU as a rookie. Do you remember social media talking about all the drops? Oh, my gosh, this guy can't hold on to the football. He went on to have over 1400 yards and 13 touchdowns as a rookie and is widely considered one of the top two or three receivers in the game. But we get caught up in that. He's dropping the ball. Oh, my goodness. Well, He's. He's going to be a bust. And then all of a sudden, it's like, never mind. It's something to say in training camp. Marvin Harrison struggling with drops. Okay, let me see what happens when the season starts. It'd be like if somebody says, man, you know who is balling out? Shador Sanders. Two touchdown passes, no interceptions, and be like, does he have pads on? Are they playing? Is he wearing shorts? Has he got flip flops on? Is the defense able to hit him? I think those are things. I just go, okay. I know it gives us content. You're searching for content here. But I have to laugh when these headlines, you know, Baker Mayfield's a headline. Vita Vea. That's a headline. That's real. Somebody dropped like that to me, is not like stats in training camp. There's probably some guys. I mean, I counted all my shots that I made in warmups when I was in college. I'm being like, man, I'm killing it. Yeah, go sit down, golden boy. Okay. Yeah.
Paulie
Paulie, what if we made, like, a negative version of it? If Shador Sanders is 12 for 12 verse during a scrimmage, and then we say, you know, the Browns defense does not look good this year. That's the problem.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, you can spin it any way you want. Yes, Marvin.
Marvin
Yeah. My favorite thing was training camp hall of Famers for me, first ballot, Kevin Cobb of the Philadelphia Eagles. Boy, they were like, cobb or Vic? I was like, are you serious?
Dan Patrick
Kevin Cobb, though, he got paid, didn't he? Didn't he suffer a concussion and think bad concussion? What other poll question do we do we have for the first hour?
Todd
Favorite cut of steak. Dan, since we're having a little steak day, are you a ribeye strip, a filet or an other guy?
Dan Patrick
Probably a strip because I always think of New York strip. I always think of a steak. It's New York and it's usually New York strip. So I would say that, yeah, New York strip. Oh, by the way, Debo Samuel back with the Niners. And the Niners got a lot of questions. If I start to look at everything that's going on. So you had quarterback. They split quarterback games last year, nine to eight, I think so. Purdy and Jones. I think Purdy had nine starts and Mac Jones had eight. Mike Evans missed nine games last season. Ricky Pierce saw. Could be out for the year. Kittle coming off an injury. Debo and Christian McCaffrey consistently banged up, so. And you got a coach who's banged up as well. So the injuries they just keep mounting for the niners. But we'll get to that story about information on this Kyle shanahan car accident because I mean, once again, if you tell me up front your coach involved in a car accident. He is non life threatening injuries. We hope to have him back to start training camp. Okay. But all of a sudden it's information that's now leaking out. Nothing leaked out for 11 days. But it just feels like this makes me question it even more. And then the police aren't going to give us information. Tmz, I think filed a report they wanted to. Maybe it's the freedom of information act they were hoping to get. And the police said no. Palo alto police said no. We're not releasing any other information. Why? What is it that they don't want us to see now? Is it available for us to be able to see this or read this? So I just want to make sure that. But TMZ is asking for this. But you know, from what I read, Palo alto police are not giving up any more information. Even dash cam video. Like nothing. Which makes me wonder even more why or why not?
