Jonas Knox
It is the Dan Patrick show here on FOX Sports Radio. Levar Arrington, Brady Quinn, Jonas Knox with you sitting in for Dan and the guys. You can hear us weekday mornings before the Dan Patrick Show. Normally, Monday through Friday, 6:00am Eastern Time, 3:00 clock Pacific. We do a little something called 2 Pros. And of Joe you can find us on the iHeartRadio app. You can always find us on hundreds of affiliates all across the country. If you are listening on the podcast, we appreciate you doing so. And you can follow along and watch along on YouTube. Pros FSR. That's at 2 pros FSR on YouTube, by the way. Before we get to this story about something that is now back, I gotta just point this out. And I mentioned this to Lavar, I think, on Friday. But, Brady, I don't know if you've. You've noticed this or if anybody's noticed this. I think there's something that's making a comeback. Lung darts. I'm telling you, I see more and more people smoking cigs now, like, all the time, and I really do think it's making a cut. I don't know what it is. It just. Maybe it's because it's been gone for so long that you see two or three people and it stands out. But I'm telling you, man, more and more people are going the lung dart route when they're out and about.
Rich Davis
But I, I can't share in that same respect. I think there's actually been a lot of other nicotine options that I've seen. It feels like everyone's doing zins, everyone's doing some sort of nicotine pouch. That. That's what I'd say is most prevalent. I have. I've not seen an uptick in people smoking cigs.
Jonas Knox
Open your eyes, man. Just look around. Yeah, look around, man. While we can argue about the point that lung darts may or may not be back in style. You know what else is back in style? The Caitlin Clark discussion. Here we go again. Yeah, yeah. Tis the season. Oh, it's. It's off and running. The way she's treated in the league, the way she's officiated, there's Caitlyn's life matters. It's, it's, it's a real. It's a real thing.
Kal Penn
Klm. The new movement is underway. Klm.
Covino
Lots of C dang clm.
Kal Penn
My bad.
Jonas Knox
That's all right.
Kal Penn
I thought Kate. What, like Caitlyn was like a part of Kate. A derivative of Kate Katie, but okay. Yeah, maybe we'll do what it see. Yeah, okay, my bad.
Rich Davis
We'll figure it out.
Commercial Voiceover
So.
Rich Davis
So what now, Jonas? What is the uproar now about in the w. I have to be honest, I don't watch. I do see some of the social media accounts and some of the articles,
Kal Penn
but I don't want to eat our ass out there.
Jonas Knox
So they don't like, you know, the hard foul. She went down on the ground. It looked like, you know, the, the gal put her fist on her throat.
Covino
It looked like.
Kal Penn
Or was it like strategically positioned on her throat?
Jonas Knox
But see, here's, here's where I look at this.
Rich Davis
Oh, does she flop though? Like, that's the other question to all this. Like, are they legitimate hard fouls or she flop.
Kal Penn
She is a facilitator for certain. But the, the getting lit up is definitely real. It's real. She's getting lit up. I mean, but she's not. It's not like she's like about this though.
Rich Davis
I mean, like, isn't that one of the things you do to a smaller player? Like if, if you're trying to get in the head of an opponent, aren't you going to try to be more physical? Aren't you going to do something like
Kal Penn
a little bit dirty?
Yes.
And she tries to get. And she tries to get in their heads back though. I think that, that not discussed as much. But she is trying. She tries to get like she's a trash talker. She tries to get into people's heads as well. And, and she has her way of going about doing things. But that does not. In, in this instance of what Jonas is bringing up, they are.
Rich Davis
It's become a race thing.
Kal Penn
Is that what it is now she's being targeted. I don't think that it's just black players that are jacking her ass up. Is white players too. I mean, it's. I think it's a WNBA thing. It's a I'm not Caitlin Clark thing, to be honest. I don't know that it falls into the racial category. I think that might have came out by now if it was racially speaking. Now Whitlock takes it down the, the, that lane. What Whitlock will tell you, he'll let you know how he feels about it in that direction. But I just think that this is a girl that people are there. They, they don't feel like she should get the attention that she gets praised the way that she's praised.
Rich Davis
That's ultimately what this comes down to, is the WNBA has been in existence for a long time and happened to find this rocket star, you know, this rocket ship of a, you know, talent and branding and everything from her days at Iowa playing, you know, basketball there now to the wnba. And it's created so much more attention and focus and I can understand why there's so many past great players who are you Know, frustrated by it, who are most mostly jealous, if we're being honest about it. And people who feel like they've, you know, built this league up to a certain point before she got there, and they never got this attention, they never got those dues. I would just generally say this because we, we've talked about this in regards to the comparison between Caitlin Clark and Steph Curry. Like, she is essentially the female version of Steph Curry, where when Steph Curry came along, his game was relatable. You know, I remember loving to watch Vince Carter because he was a high flying best dunker. You know, basically made it impossible for anyone who went up against him in a dunk contest to have much of a shot to beat him. And it was must see TV because he was doing things that no one else really could do. And then you, you pass along to a guy like Steph Curry and he's a player that, well, yeah, no one's gonna be able to shoot with the consistency that he does from the logo or from half court or from, you know, way outside the three point line. And so him doing that is obviously like a goal. It's something that everyone tries to aspire to be. But one thing they can all try to be is that because not everyone's gonna be able to tall enough to dunk or have the hops to dunk everything else. And then Caitlin Clark's kind of come along and been like that female version of that. Right. And that's one of the things that I feel like, you know, maybe it's because she, she's not as skilled in some other apartment departments or she's not as big as, you know, talented as some of the others. But the reality is no one watched women's basketball the same way they have now with Caitlin Clark because she's doing stuff that we've never seen before. Show me past the past history of WNBA players pulling up from the range to hit threes like she does.
Boost Mobile Representative
You.
Rich Davis
You can't find it. No one's doing that stuff when she was doing in college, like, that's what made it so attractive. That's what made it. People go so crazy about it because she was doing on a consistent basis and was successful doing it. And so that's, to me, where it's like, all right, like, I, I can understand the hype around it. I can understand that, you know, the. Everything she's created, but I don't understand how the WNBA doesn't embrace this. And it feels like they ostracize her in A manner that forces her to have to like defend herself every time you hear a story or you look at what's happening out there. I mean, the officiating is the officiating. Look, the officiating isn't great regardless of any professional league. So as far as the physicality to the game and how that goes, that's on the officials. You know, they have to do a better job of being able to protect a lot of the players out there so things don't get out of hand. And if they are targeting her because she's a smaller player and they feel like this is the way you can get her head, this is the way you can force her to have a bad shooting night. That, that scheme, that's tactics. That's just a reality of how things are going to go. And by the way, that's not just basketball, that's any sport. So I look at it and just say like, it doesn't make any sense to me that you have this shooting star that comes into your league and instead of embracing her, instead of getting behind it, you then kind of put her off out on an island where she almost has to be a villain to some or it feels like that as opp. To her being the hero to so many others that watch her. But maybe that's the point. Maybe it's the fact that because she's polarizing to some of the their own players in the WNBA that it and maybe even polarizing some of the fans out there that allows us to create more attention. Because as good as the WNBA players have been in the past, it's never created this sort of discourse.
Jonas Knox
They just come across, the WNBA in general just come across as such a nickel and dime, just like weak league, like poorly run. Like it just, it just, it makes it hard for me to want to sit and keep up and pay attention. Sophie Cunningham seems to be the only one who's just sort of embraced sort of everything that comes along with Caitlin Clark and just like, all right, I mean my, my star is going to rise because of all this like the finger pointing meme, all that stuff. It just like you got something there that you could build around and instead you're trying to tear it down. And I do think that some of the outrage, the way she's treated is, it is a bit overblown. I mean this is, you know, physical basketball, hard fouls, whatnot. But I also don't, I also think that they have not done enough to build it up and promote it in a way to where people are going to be like, oh, yeah, I want to pay attention.
Kal Penn
I want to.
Jonas Knox
I want to follow along. I want to watch this. I want to see I'm a casual but get me interested instead. That it's turned into racial discussions and all the other things that come along with it. I just think people are over it, man. I think. Just think they're tired of it.
Kal Penn
I just don't think the talent level is high enough to not just make it about basketball. Like, if you could just make it. If you could have just made it about basketball, that would be what they make it about. That's what the polarizing storylines would be. The headlines would be. This is clearly a reach to maintain some attention and some relevancy. She's not only driving the league as. As a figure that can shoot the ball the way that she does, but she's also driving the narrative and in the league for attention in terms of how she's being treatment. Her treatment of it. It's kind of funny that the biggest storyline is a young white woman being, for all intents and purposes, discriminated against in her. Her field of work.
Jonas Knox
That's right.
Kal Penn
Like the irony.
Miller Lite Commercial Voice
Yeah.
Kal Penn
It's just.
Rich Davis
It's interesting.
Jonas Knox
But now you know how Brady and I feel on the show.
Kal Penn
Yeah, the. Up top. Yeah, up top.
Commercial Voiceover
Yeah.
Kal Penn
I just, you know, which we. I was about to say something. I was about to say something real interesting.
Rich Davis
We. We started off the show with a big white guy at the front door.
Covino
That was pretty scary.
Joey Chestnut
Yeah.
Kal Penn
By the way, I'm going to leave what I was about to say.
Jonas Knox
Anybody that's not familiar when racial conversations come up, some people like to tiptoe around it. We're like cannonball.
Joey Chestnut
Yeah.
Kal Penn
Yeah. Well, I mean, it's a. It's a real topic. Right. I mean, it's one of the top topics that are out there is. Is racial equality and harmonious ways of going about doing things. I mean, it. It exists. And there's probably some racial tones to this that are connected to this. And I mean, there's no getting around that. But again, it ultimately comes down to playing the games, getting through the games. You know, people point out what refs do and what they don't do, coaches included, all the time. You know, people point out what players do all the time. Caitlin Clark just happens to be the most polarizing figure that's ever been a part of the wnba.
Miller Lite Commercial Voice
And
Kal Penn
it's. I gotta say, it's not because of how good she is. I know we keep throwing out there how good she is, if we were to say greatest basketball player in the women's league of all time. She's not even probably in the top five of the greatest that you would ever say has played in the wnba. And I think that's just reality. Maybe not even top 10. I mean, some would say Cheryl, Cheryl Swoops. Some people say Cheryl Miller is like the greatest basketball player of all time ever in the history of the game, period. There's the Lisa Leslie's of the world there, there, there's like Witherspoon. Like there are some really, really amazing players.
Covino
Sue Bird.
Kal Penn
I don't know how far you go with that one. But you know, Tarazi, Stacy Dales.
Jonas Knox
About that.
Kal Penn
I don't know how far you go with Stacy Dales. I, I'll just say though, there have been some, some really, really, really deserving talent wise players. I mean, I most would probably say Cheryl Swoops was the Michael Jordan. Like, I hear the comparisons. Oh, she's like. Caitlyn is like the Michael Jordan of the wnba. No, she's not. She's just the first of her kind in, in the wnba, which is. She can hoop. Well, whatever. That, the way she shoots.
Covino
Really.
Rich Davis
I mean, that's what she is.
Kal Penn
More of a Steph Curry. Yeah, yeah, more of a Steph Curry the way she shoots. But I've heard, I've heard comparisons to her, to Michael Jordan. She's not comparable to Michael Jordan.
Rich Davis
I know where Jonas is going to.
Kal Penn
Where are you going, Jonas?
Covino
I gave you an easy layup.
Kal Penn
It's an easy layup.
Jonas Knox
You know, it's 50. 50.
Rich Davis
You know, he gets
Jonas Knox
compass. You know, we're half right.
Rich Davis
Corn flip for you, Jonas.
Jonas Knox
Yeah, it's, you know.
Rich Davis
Yeah, that's her tails.
Kal Penn
I mean, she's a straight white woman. Let's call it what it is.
Commercial Voiceover
I mean, okay. All right.
Kal Penn
Boomer Assassin called it out for everybody to talk about. He made it very, he made it very apparent and very obvious that she's a straight white woman.
Rich Davis
She does, she doesn't fit the prototyp. Typical.
Kal Penn
If she likes, if she liked women, they wouldn't be messing with her as much. I mean, we're just gonna keep it all the way. 100. We're gonna keep it 100 from the hip. It's not racial. It's, it's, it's, it's racial.
Rich Davis
She's a villain then.
Covino
She's a villain.
Kal Penn
She's white and she's straight.
Jonas Knox
Couldn't you wait two days?
Kal Penn
Geez, I'm sorry. Y'. All wanted to force it out of me. There. There it is.
Covino
You got to be ashamed of yourself.
Kal Penn
Boomer said it. She's white and she's straight. If she was white and she was a part of the lgbq. Lgbq. T. Lgb.
Rich Davis
There's an A and I in there. And there's a plus sign at some
Kal Penn
point, okay, if she was a part of that community directly, they wouldn't mess with her as much. They wouldn't mess with her as much. There wouldn't be as much beef or they. At least that's more. At least that
Jonas Knox
we're gonna.
Kal Penn
At least that's what it appears to be. That's what the narrative is surrounded by. You're not one of us.
Jonas Knox
What a league, man.
Kal Penn
You could at least be one of us. You want to be, like, the biggest one out here and the biggest name at least. But for what it's worth, I mean, the best player in the WFNBA is straight. She is a straight black woman, Right? But I guess black qualifies her to be. Be straight. She can be straight because she's black. She. She checks off at least one major box.
Covino
Like, you know your stuff, man.
Kal Penn
Thank you. Thank you. She dates. Bam. Out of value. By the way,
Rich Davis
before we go to break, I give you a quick update by the way. Wimbledon has started and the number one seed. Sinner.
Commercial Voiceover
What?
Rich Davis
I'm just still letting you know. Okay, Little. Little update. The number one seed center is down right now in the first round match.
Jonas Knox
Yeah.
Rich Davis
So, Yannick again. Another opportunity for LBJ to come visit before the show is over.
Jonas Knox
See, but.
Covino
But here's the thing.
Jonas Knox
These. These matches started a while ago. Like, he. He could get in the mix. Coming up on Wednesday when we go back to our normal time slot. Like, I'm just, you know, There. There's going to be opportunities here.
Rich Davis
Oh, man.
Miller Lite Commercial Voice
What do you.
Rich Davis
I'm so disappointing.
Jonas Knox
What do you want from me? Lavar just broke down his Mount Rushmore of straight WNBA players. Like, I'm trying to give him out.
Kal Penn
Rushmore?
Rich Davis
Yeah. He didn't get past two, I don't think.
Kal Penn
What do you mean? I gave you names.
Rich Davis
Well, yeah.
Kal Penn
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh. Well, I don't know how many of them are. Okay, okay, that's fair. I saw what you did there. I had to catch on to what you did, but I caught on to what you did.
Covino
All right, well, you're right.
Kal Penn
You're right about that.
Jonas Knox
I.
Kal Penn
In fact, I don't know that any of them that I named are on that Caitlin Clark train.
Rich Davis
And nor do you care.
Kal Penn
And nor. And I don't care. Yeah, because I don't care,
Commercial Voiceover
by the way.
Kal Penn
I don't care. Because I don't care. But since we're talking about it, and this is sports talk radio, this is like a page.
Rich Davis
This is a page of the NBA playbook. It's like. Like, draw up. You can't draw up interest in our game. We have to draw up interest in things outside of our game because the game's not compelling enough. Like, that's as. Essentially, that's what it is.
Jonas Knox
Yes, yes. Which.
Kal Penn
That's what it is.
Jonas Knox
Which. If you're already at that point, then that seems like it's a problem. Like that we're not.
Kal Penn
Why is that a problem? It works.
Jonas Knox
Okay, but if you got a formula
Kal Penn
that works, stay with the formula that works. Why are you going to try to break some. Fix something that isn't broken?
Jonas Knox
All right, so what are we going to do every June or going to roll this back around? We're going to rough her up for a couple of years.
Covino
That's what's happening.
Jonas Knox
Okay. Like, it's.
Commercial Voiceover
And we're talking about it, but okay, so.
Jonas Knox
So then next June, when we're filling in, just pencil this in. It'll save us time to do notes. Just pencil in whatever we said, and then we'll do it again next June because apparently that's the WNBA playbook. Except this time, Sophie Cunningham will have a different gesture that'll turn into a meme and we'll kind of go that direction again.
Kal Penn
It was really good, though. Everybody's using Hilarious.
Rich Davis
It's gonna be a great.
Kal Penn
Everybody's using it. I wish I could. I wish I could use the meme. You know, I can't really use it, but I wish I could. It wouldn't work out the same way.
Jonas Knox
Do we have the Sophie Cunningham talking about. So this was her explaining what went behind the. The finger pointing that went viral over the weekend.
Sophie Cunningham
I did not see that happen. And I. And like, none of our team saw it happen, because I promise you if that we would have seen that happen, we would have had her back. Unfortunately, this type of happens single game to her and the league and the refs do absolutely nothing about it.
Jonas Knox
It's been a minute since you got fined on this podcast.
Covino
I have.
Sophie Cunningham
But then, like, you see the videos of literally knee and cheap shotting. See in the throat. Like, if she did that to any of our teammates, we'd be pissed. But, like, they're Definitely targeting her and the league, and the refs do nothing to protect her.
Kal Penn
That is so wild hearing a white person talk like that, bro. Because it's like if you just switched it up and made it that stuff every day, I know. I'm desensitized to it.
Covino
Yeah, yeah, I get it.
Rich Davis
What did I say every day, huh?
Kal Penn
I mean, I'm just saying.
Jonas Knox
Oh, come on.
Kal Penn
You would not be victimized, would you?
Jonas Knox
Just stop. You know, you're white.
Kal Penn
It really.
It really is. It really is. Jonas, by the way, I just figured.
Rich Davis
I think I'm the one who. Who recanted the story of. Of me, you know, intimidating Lavor outside of his hotel room. A big white guy.
Covino
Big white guy.
Commercial Voiceover
Call the front desk. We need security.
Rich Davis
Yeah, it's a big white guy outside.
Kal Penn
White guy outside the door knocking, saying, I'm going downstairs.
Jonas Knox
Circle the block.
Rich Davis
By the way, if those. Until he leaves those. If those situations were reversed, like, come on now.
Kal Penn
You know, I mean, that's what we hear more often than not, though. Like, let's be clear.
Miller Lite Commercial Voice
You know, it's.
Jonas Knox
Hey, Brady. You know, we were thinking about during the break, though, Brandon Ayuk talking about, you know, there's this big white man outside. Outside the house. Then he was about ready to go, and I think. I wonder if at some point during his rant, he remembered, wait a second. My teammate, who's also a wide receiver, got shot in broad daylight for a Rolex, So maybe they go down that road. Doesn't exactly work in San Francisco.
Kal Penn
Or how about the. The house that he pulled up on is being paid for by him. How about that?
Commercial Voiceover
Yeah, how about.
Kal Penn
How about. How about the car that you're spinning around the block in to avoid coming back home right now is money? That was. That came from a contract that he did with you. How about that?
Rich Davis
I mean, let's start completely go back to that. But that clip did make it sound like it's more of a beat between Brennan Iuk and Kyle Shanahan.
Kal Penn
It did. It did.
Rich Davis
You know, like. And, like, John lynch is trying to squash it or. Or make things right, and obviously Iuk's done. So it is what it is.
Kal Penn
That did get buried by the lead. There's a big white man at the door. It did get buried.
Jonas Knox
Yeah.
Rich Davis
It was very distracting. I mean, I would think most people would be excited if John lynch was
Jonas Knox
at your front door.
Miller Lite Commercial Voice
Hell, yeah.
Kal Penn
He's not that big, by the way. I mean, he's a safety.
Commercial Voiceover
I don't know.
Rich Davis
He's pretty big.
Kal Penn
Man, he's not that big, bro.
Rich Davis
Just to lay the lumber.
Covino
Yeah, but you know what he is?
Kal Penn
He's white.
Commercial Voiceover
That's right.
Rich Davis
That makes him big.
Kal Penn
His aura is big.
Rich Davis
Round, let's. So how does it change things, Jonas, if it's Phil Mickelson who's at that door?
Jonas Knox
Oh, I mean, you know, that's it.
Kal Penn
I mean, he's showing up with them bassets.
Jonas Knox
Yeah.
Commercial Voiceover
Then, I mean, if he's got.
Jonas Knox
He's got somebody holding the phone, he can use both biceps.
Sophie Cunningham
Yeah.
Kal Penn
He'd be telling his wife to spin around the block for another reason.
Covino
If Phil Mickelson.
Commercial Voiceover
Honey, batter up.
Rich Davis
Maybe it was a jealous. Maybe it was Phil Nicholson.
Commercial Voiceover
Just take her.
Miller Lite Commercial Voice
Yeah.
Rich Davis
Maybe that was what was intimidating this guy. Yeah, Phil Mickelson.
Commercial Voiceover
Guy looks just like Phil Mickelson.
Rich Davis
Just take her.
Jonas Knox
He's walking around with part of a turnstile.

Kal Penn
Hey everyone, it's Kal Penn. I'm the host of Irsay The Audible and iHeart Audiobook Club. This week on the podcast, I am sitting down with Ray Porter, the narrator of Andy Weir's audiobook project, Hail Mary. Massive sci fi adventure about survival and science and what happens when you wake up alone, very far from Earth.
Ray Porter
I really had to make a decision because I caught myself getting that frog in my throat and starting to get teary as I'm narrating some of these sections. And it's like, okay, yo, yo, yo, is this indulgent? And I really thought about it. I was like, no. At this point it would kind of be betraying the trust the author and the listener have in telling this story if I don't go through it. But there's places in this book that deeply, emotionally affected me and I left it on the mic. That's great because it served the story. People will say like, oh my God, I cried at the end. It's like, yeah, dude, me too.
Kal Penn

Hey, it's Ryan Reynolds here from Mint Mobile.
Covino
Now I was looking for fun ways

Covino
I'm Steve Cavino. That is Rich Davis. He's super hyped up on caffeine already. We got Danny G, our super producer. We got Iowa Sam on the glockenspiel. And we want to thank the Dan Patrick show for welcoming us again live from the Fox Sports Radio studios from the mean streets of la. And it might as well be Mexico. Hope you had a Mexico. Norway, France, sort of Tuesday, it's USA all day today. And I'll explain why. But what's going on? Rich, good morning.
Commercial Voiceover
I saw last night at the Dodgers game, you saw the dude right behind home plate. So funny reaction when team Mexico scored a goal.
Covino
That's why I love that game was in Sacramento.
Jonas Knox
I'm sorry.
Covino
Yeah, that was in Sacktown. But still same deal because Mexico scores, that guy gets out of his seat, it's viral in five minutes, not even five seconds. And it's all over the Internet. And everyone was hyped up here in Los Angeles on the west coast, all my family members and. And it really is like such a flip flop and I have to justify. Rich, we're going to talk lots of soccer today. Lots of NBA LeBron's in the news. Obviously. Mike, who runs this take? Mike, you know who runs his place?
Miller Lite Commercial Voice
Mike.
Covino
He comes here and he has a take and it's soccer related and we'll debate it. Mike, he runs his place. He looks like Rick from Stars, like Stone Cold. Steve Austin's like uncle maybe. And. And we got midweek major. We do this on our show Monday through Friday, 2 to 4 on the west, 5 to 7 on the east. So we bring it here to Dan Patrick stories and sports and pop culture. We decide are they midweek major? And we're streaming live, man, let's get into it.
Commercial Voiceover
You know, you said Micah runs this place, looks like Stone Cold and Rick from Pawn Stars.
Joey Chestnut
Never heard of him.
Covino
He looks like Stone Cold had. Had too much. Stone Cold. Cold.
Commercial Voiceover
Stone Cold Stone.
Covino
That's what I meant. That's what I meant. That was hard to get out.
Rich Davis
You should.
P
What, did Mexican fans serenade you out your window?
Kal Penn
Yeah, I'm still trying to wake up.
Commercial Voiceover
Oh, yeah.
Covino
But it's early here on the West Coast.
Commercial Voiceover
That's my favorite story. We're gonna get to that in just a second. But I always wonder, like, guys like Big Mike or Stone Cold or as you call them, Cold Stone Mike, which should be his new nickname.
Covino
Yeah, that's what I meant.
Commercial Voiceover
Every guy that's got that bald look with the goatee or beard, the Baldo Ronaldo, in another generation, would they have just been like. Like Costanza?
Covino
Yeah, he would look like Larry David.
Commercial Voiceover
Every one of those guys that has the cool look now like, they shave their head and have a beard or something.
Rich Davis
Yeah.
Commercial Voiceover
If it was 20, 30, 40 years ago, would they have all just been the guy that had side hair? Like the. Probably like the George Jefferson.
Covino
That's a great observation. Yeah. I think they lucked out.
Commercial Voiceover
If they were. If they were living in the 70s, they would not have been as cool.
Covino
So, Michael B. Here later on, thank you guys for being here.
Commercial Voiceover
Might have had two paste.
Covino
And you could watch what you hear at YouTube. Com @covinoenrich FSR live chat is up, up. And the show begins. All right, well, YouTube.com and I'm rocking my red, white, and blue. I got a jacket on now because it's cold here in the studio. Where should we. Blue, Red. Where's my red?
Joey Chestnut
Blue.
Covino
And I'm wearing as much white as I possibly can.
Commercial Voiceover
This is Kavino's. This is Kavino's example of red, white, and blue. Well, I'm excited. A white band for his Apple watch.
Miller Lite Commercial Voice
Yeah.
Commercial Voiceover
I mean, a blue Yankees hat and a red T shirt.
Covino
Blue and white Yankees hat. Is it not blue and white? I'm wearing a red shirt. The only reason I have a jacket on is because I don't want. You see my puffy nipples.
Jonas Knox
No.
Covino
It's cold in here. But I'm explaining this only because it doesn't need explanation. But I'm explaining because yesterday, I'm clearly rooting for team Mexico. But I want to explain the grandma rule to the Dan Patrick. Okay, Go over the grandma. And I also want to say that I'm so impressed with Iowa. Sam's jersey. Today you got to represent jersey.
Commercial Voiceover
Where'd you get that? It's not a jersey.
Covino
Yes, it is.
Podcast Guest or Caller
There's no number on it.
Covino
That thing is the most magical USA Soccer jersey I've ever seen. It could be.
Podcast Guest or Caller
It could spell good fortune for the usa.
Commercial Voiceover
Where did you get that?
Covino
Bosnia is going down simply based on your representation.
Podcast Guest or Caller
Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Covino
They're both going down.
P
Did you get that at the Santa Fe Springs swap meet?
Podcast Guest or Caller
So I was at a local cvs and I'm, like, checking out. They have all this different.
Commercial Voiceover
Hold on. I'm sorry.
Covino
So I was at a local cvs.
Commercial Voiceover
Cvs?
Kal Penn
Yeah.
Covino
We don't have any Walgreens around here.
Commercial Voiceover
So you got some tooth, you got some toothpaste, some body wash and a jersey.
Covino
No. Rich Roll was assuming that maybe you got it at Costco or something. No, that's a CVS bad boy.
Podcast Guest or Caller
So it's like it was $10, which in this day and age Is a good deal.
Rich Davis
Like a good, A good deal.
P
Did you use your five dollar care card?
Podcast Guest or Caller
I did. I used my coupon that came out like a scroll. But there's like a star on it and the little legs are like really long. It's kind of weirdly asymmetrical.
Covino
Sam, I think that is the sweetest USA jersey I've ever seen. I, I, I've seen like three year olds wear the same one and I've always been jealous of it.
Podcast Guest or Caller
These red, weird little.
Covino
I think it's awesome.
Commercial Voiceover
I'll be honest. I think that is, it does have an American.
Podcast Guest or Caller
I didn't count these stars to make
Commercial Voiceover
sure there's 50 of them.
Covino
You got to save that for Fourth of July weekend.
Podcast Guest or Caller
I probably will bust it back.
Covino
Yeah, you have to bust it out again.
Podcast Guest or Caller
It's got kind of a weird funk to it because it's like completely synthetic. Like, I washed it. It smells kind of weird.
P
There's definitely 42 states on your sleeve.
Commercial Voiceover
It's a misprint.
Podcast Guest or Caller
Four stars, nine stars.
Covino
Can I tell you, Sam's rocking his USA jersey. Rich is rocking his founding father, 1776.
Podcast Guest or Caller
I saw ads for that shirt on like Facebook.
Covino
I'm trying to rock some red, white, and blue and I'll explain why, but go ahead. Rich, I didn't want to interrupt you.
Commercial Voiceover
I was telling you, that shirt that Tim's wearing, like, you want to make fun of him, but you can't because it is so bad that it's crossed over. It crossed over to being good. A ten dollar cvs. It's not even a bootleg jersey. It's its own logo. It's a bootleg of a bootleg. It's almost like if a kid, you told your kid, like, design a usa,
Podcast Guest or Caller
I made the star.
Commercial Voiceover
The star's legs are really long.
Covino
Honestly, that is amazing. I feel more patriotic when I look in your direction.
Commercial Voiceover
Sam, dare I say if I knew where you bough it, since I'm not going to see you on the 4th, I would almost want to go there and be like, can I get one?
Podcast Guest or Caller
They were on this rack right at the front of the store, like in right as you walk in.
Commercial Voiceover
And I was like, huh?
Podcast Guest or Caller
So is this $10 or it was like an official USA Soccer jersey for $30. And I'm like, you know what? I'm going with this one. It has more character.
Commercial Voiceover
What you got is the equivalent of, you know, on Halloween when they sell in a bag, like baseball player. And it's just a generic, like, pinstripe shirt that's what it is that I like.
Covino
I feel like that shirt came with one of those old school plastic, like, like, George Washington masks or like an Uncle Sam mask.
Podcast Guest or Caller
Oh, absolutely. Or like, this would come out of a T shirt cannon at, like, a minor league baseball or like a bald eagle, like, math.
Covino
Remember those. Those 1980s Halloween costumes with the plastic masks that it was cut into your eyes.
Podcast Guest or Caller
It was the synthetic shirt or mock.
Covino
That's in the Captain America, Underoos version. So, anyway, Sam is representing and so patriotic and American today. And it goes with my first rule of the day. And that's the grandma rule.
Commercial Voiceover
Let's hear.
Covino
So yesterday, of course, I was rocking my Mexico jersey. I got to make it clear. My mom sent me that jersey. She's like, I want my Boise to have this jersey. My mom's from Mexico. She sent me the jersey. I'm rocking it proudly. I'm pumped up about the game, which we're going to get to. We know why Mexico won.
Kal Penn
We.
Covino
We know the secret. We'll explain. But the grandma rule allows me to do so. So today I came in, I'm trying to wear red, white, and blue. I got this USA baseball hat that I'm trying to get my hands on. Right spot.
Commercial Voiceover
Sam won. You did not win.
Joey Chestnut
No, no.
Covino
Sam wins for sure.
Podcast Guest or Caller
Covino looks like, like, some tech CEO who's like, yeah, I'm trying to be patriotic, but also just kind of blend.
Commercial Voiceover
He's like Rob Lowe. He's like Rob Lowe wearing an NFL hat, saying, like, I'm here for the game.
Rich Davis
Red, white, and blue casual.
Podcast Guest or Caller
Patriot.
Rich Davis
A red and blue bracelet, a white.
Covino
Like, what more can I do without wearing a soccer jersey? Right? But there's a lot of people that ask a fair question, and there's a lot of, like, Mexican Americans especially, that are guilty of this because you can be proud of where your heritage is from, your ethnicity, of course, and proud of your nationality, proud to be an American, right? So yesterday I'm like. Today I'm like, let's go usa. Usa.
Commercial Voiceover
USA Today.
Rich Davis
You're like, get her done.
Covino
And here's the rule. USA all day. The rule is simple. We've established it. Rich coined it as the Grandma rule. If your ma. If your grandma was from another land, if your grandma had a thick accent
Commercial Voiceover
or spoke a different language and has some good recipes.
Covino
Yeah, yeah. If your grandma had that accent and made you that good food, you're allowed to represent that country. But you can't root against the USA because that's just un American.
Commercial Voiceover
That's the rule, the grandma rule.
Covino
So of course pulling for usa, it's not a matter of flip flopping or front running or can't make up your mind sort of thing. It's just sort of the situation we happen to be in as Americans. And the closer to your roots, the more of a, the more of a situation it is. Right. Otherwise, if you're rooting against the USA Today, that's very weak. That's very, very weaker.
Commercial Voiceover
And by the way, people are asking Sam on our intro chat, did that shirt come with a, with a coupon for a Big Gulp?
Boost Mobile Representative
Yes.
Commercial Voiceover
Or a hot dog at 7:11 on the, the little roach.
Podcast Guest or Caller
More coupons came out of the like,
Covino
you know what it was?
Podcast Guest or Caller
Cash register.
Covino
No, there was an old lady there at CVS and she's like, spin the wheel, honey. And Sam did and, and he won that shirt.
Commercial Voiceover
I love it.
P
Same with a 20 off one regular priced item.
Covino
Yeah.
Jonas Knox
Yeah.
Covino
Sam spent more than $10. She's like, we're having a promotion. Sam was kind enough to stop. She's like, if you spend more than $10, she, she saw the receipt shake. Spin the wheel. And Sam happened to win that.
Podcast Guest or Caller
I don't think I should get this near an open flame. It might be.
Covino
Is it worth $10, rich? Because you're really coming down hard on it.
Commercial Voiceover
No, I, I, I'm, oh, it's worth $10. It's definitely worth $10.
Podcast Guest or Caller
I, I genuinely feel like what's worth $10 these days.
Commercial Voiceover
I feel for real that if you told me down the block they still had them, I would, I would buy one.
Podcast Guest or Caller
I think there were just one left after there was a bunch of Mexico and ECU. There was other countries, but there's two left.
Covino
Sam, there's no question it's worth $10. And there's no question that what you're doing is way better than nothing at all. And that's no knock on anybody not trust up right now. I'm saying like for the weekend or for the game later on tonight. I mean, it's a $10 jersey, he's rocking it. And dude, we all got, we all got doctor's appointments. You know why? We all got soccer fever, World cup fever.
Commercial Voiceover
Except I have a couple rules we're going to get to. But Danny G, based on the merch. One last question. When you're going, to, let's say, Dodger Stadium. I know we're on 570 this morning. What's up? California Morning audit.
P
I know what you're gonna ask the dudes on the way up the hill.
Commercial Voiceover
Yeah. When you're up the hill on the way to Dodger Stadium, is it awesome or lame when you buy, like, a Dodgers hello Kitty shirt for your daughter or where they have, like, the bootleg jersey?
P
I mean, it's awesome. As long as it's $15 in cash.
Commercial Voiceover
That's what I'm saying. Like, are you cool? Like, you're not the guy.
Covino
That's, like, good, Rich.
Commercial Voiceover
Just depends. I don't think you need to listen.
Covino
You tell me that people listening. Never bought a bootleg shirt before.
Commercial Voiceover
I was gonna say without. Without upsetting the. The official leagues of Major League Baseball, NFL.
Covino
We're not saying you should, but we're saying we understand.
Commercial Voiceover
I do think there's something to be said about a good bootleg shirt.
Jonas Knox
Yeah.
Commercial Voiceover
Especially after a team clinches something on the way to the parking lot, you know, they're ready to, like, a lucky.
Covino
You know, where it happens. Even. Even worse, Rich, you can't relate, but have you heard of the Canyon of Heroes and, you know those parades that winning teams have.
Commercial Voiceover
My teams never win. So now I don't know.
Covino
There's just vendors everywhere at events like that. Right. You can't avoid them. You're seeing all these different bootle.
Kal Penn
I need that one and that one and that one.
Covino
Of course, we want you to get the official merch, because that's what counts and that's what matters. And that's, like, that's the best look to go with. But you can't avoid some. Some nice bootlegs once in a while. They're just out there and about there. So we're doing our best to represent. There's an exciting game, actually a bunch of exciting games today, and we'll talk about that throughout the day, but we got to tell you why we know not. We think we know why Ecuador lost last night.
P
The secret hot sauce.
Kal Penn
This is.
Commercial Voiceover
This is the funniest yet. Is it wrong or as they say, the ultimate home field advantage?
Covino
It is the ultimate home field advantage out there and about there. Azteca Stadium present. We've been out there, Rich. Rich and I had the honor and privilege not to brag, but I'm very proud. There's a difference. It's not bragging if it's true. Rich and I had the honor of doing Monday Night Football on the field with ESPN at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, and it's massive.
Commercial Voiceover
The craziest part of that, Danny, was that when we did work for ESPN and did that Monday Night Football game We had transportation from the hotel to the stadium. And they're like, kavino, Rich, you're going
Covino
to be riding with.
Commercial Voiceover
They had us riding with Steve Young. And I had to pretend that I wasn't a lifelong 49ers fan and I didn't have a poster of him on my wall.
Covino
I'm like, Steve Akum, which is so awkward. I was like, ye, so awkward, but so awesome. And you know, I want people to know we take that stuff. Well, we're very fortunate.
Commercial Voiceover
We take.
Covino
We're not. We not take it for granted.
P
So you don't take it for granted like LeBron James.
Covino
No, we don't. We're going to talk about him plenty. But we know why, as Danny G said, we know the Mexican hot sauce that made it happen last night. The secret Mexican hot sauce.
Commercial Voiceover
Mexican fans the night before the World cup game yesterday. So two nights ago. Ago, two sleeps ago, as your kids would say, all the Mexican fans were outside Ecuador's hotel just making noise like. Danny, can you play the clip of. This is actual for real noise, Rich.
Covino
It's called music.
Commercial Voiceover
Oh, I'm sorry, my bad.
P
Drums. Yeah, drums.
Rich Davis
Fireworks. Car horns.
Covino
Actually, you're not that far off. Hey, this little noise is el
Jonas Knox
noise.
Boost Mobile Ad Narrator
Hey.
Covino
This is right out of. Right outside of their hotel rooms.
Commercial Voiceover
But this went on all throughout the middle of the night in an attempt to make sure they didn't get a good night's sleep.
Covino
They had full on drum kits and mariachi bands. I think Los Bukis were out there playing like it was insane to see like the mayhem and the lengths they went for their team. Like that's incredible. Incredibly. Think about that. Which is not making this up. We're not making this up. They had full on crowds outside Ecuador's hotel just to keep them awake to prevent them from sleeping to give team Mexico the advantage. And it looked like right off, right off the jump that they did, Mexico played a solid game.
Miller Lite Commercial Voice
Yeah.
Podcast Guest or Caller
It was over by halftime. I was two nothing at half.
Rich Davis
Yeah.
Commercial Voiceover
Can I tell you, I have a.
Covino
It could have been a lot worse. They, they were set up for a lot more goals that they just didn't get.
Commercial Voiceover
So Ecuador didn't stand the chance based on Mexico's strategy of don't let them sleep. Danny, get it? No, that. You're not sleeping tonight.
Covino
So. So
Commercial Voiceover
they did not stand the chance. And you know, story, by the way,
Covino
we're not making this up.
Miller Lite Commercial Voice
It's.
Covino
This isn't just a fun theory. This is actual real footage. Yes. I mean we're Adding a little to it.
Podcast Guest or Caller
That just happened.
Covino
But that's actual footage. And that really happened. I want to make that very clear. That really happened. That it happened. Real impact. I mean, unless they had earplugs in, I mean, how could you avoid the noise?
Commercial Voiceover
Not every hotel room could that. Nothing soundproof like that. I lived in. Before we moved to la, I lived in Hell's Kitchen near Times Square. There were nights where you have to get used to the noise, man. If you live in a big city, you have to get used to the noise. And imagine outside your hotel all night,
Covino
there's a party like that drum sets out.
Commercial Voiceover
I'm not lying.
Covino
I know it sounds like I'm exaggerating. Not.
Commercial Voiceover
You ever go to a resort for vacation with the wife of your girlfriend or something and there's a party going on at the resort and you call it an early night and you still hear that vibration on the windows and you're like.
Covino
And then Michael Jackson comes out and hear like in the background.
P
When our show did that. When our show did that live broadcast a couple of years ago from Nashville outside our hotel, the whole night, all I heard was the bachelorette parties.
Commercial Voiceover
It is what it is. And Ecuador, I'm sorry, they got no sleep. And that's the reason.
Covino
Um, I've definitely been kept up by a Michael Jackson impersonator a few times
Commercial Voiceover
because every, every resort still has a Michael Jackson night. True story. And by the way, one last thought on the. I'm sorry.
Covino
Absolutely.
Commercial Voiceover
On the bootleg stuff. We're getting so much great feedback on the intro chat.
Covino
I'm going to pull that up right now again. You could watch what you hear. You could see Sam's glorious USA shirt at Covino Enrich FSR on YouTube. YouTube.com richfsr and join the live chat.
Commercial Voiceover
Jason Nichols, 77, hit us up saying that maybe not so much for sports, but concert bootleg shirts are the best. Because if you buy like a bootleg Dodger shirt, Danny, it might be like the wrong font or something, but. But a concert shirt, if you go see an artist perform the bootleg T shirt on the way out, that might be the best get. Because it's not like it needs to be official or anything. Like you may want your official Yankee.
Covino
Gotta get the official. I mean that. I'm not just saying that to be know on the correct side of things here. Like should never do that stuff.
P
He also typed in that the whole CNR staff should wear the same CVS shirts on tomorrow's show.
Covino
You know what, dude?
Podcast Guest or Caller
On canvas, all the cvs and find these.
Covino
I grew up a Nickelodeon kid. If that's a double dare, I'll take the physical challenge.
P
I doubt they have my size.
Covino
Consider me Mark Summers, bro. Let's go.
Commercial Voiceover
I'm gonna try to find one on the way home.
Covino
On the way home.
Commercial Voiceover
What's tougher to find?
Covino
By the way, Danny G, if they had little baby sizes, might even be better.
P
Not for our YouTube audience.
Covino
He's gonna be wearing a medium.
Commercial Voiceover
Oh, they only have men's small.
Podcast Guest or Caller
They only have corset size.
Commercial Voiceover
Oh, wait, they're belly shirts.
Rich Davis
It's gonna be a race to get
Covino
there because I'm gonna try to find the last large.
P
Oh, is that Ronnie from Jersey Shore? He looks bloated.
Covino
Oh, by the way, that's. That's another rule we got to establish here when it comes to soccer jerseys. Not only the grandma rule, you always have to get a size bigger. So if you're a size large, you have to get that xl because soccer jerseys make you look like a chubby sausage. Because they're.
Podcast Guest or Caller
Because soccer players are in shape.
Covino
They're in shape and they run real. No fat on them at all. Exactly. Soccer jerseys, you always got to get the size bigger.
Commercial Voiceover
If you wear. If you wear your actual size, you will look like you just participated with Joey Chestnut.
Covino

Commercial Voiceover
What's up, Joey?
Joey Chestnut
Oh, I'm doing good.
Boost Mobile Ad Narrator
Good.
Covino
Joey, Joey, Joey. What up, Budd?
Joey Chestnut
Feeling good?
Commercial Voiceover
I was going to say going for title number 18. Now I got to ask your name now that this is not, you know, the early days of Joey Chestnut. You're the goat. We jokingly say the four majors, football, baseball, basketball and hot dog eating. And there's Joey Chestnut going for number 18. When have you used I'm Joey Chestnut to get out of something or to get in somewhere? Do you have any funny stories where you've someone's recognized if you ever use
Joey Chestnut
the word do you know who I am? Don't use that line and trust me,
Covino
not even for a ticket or anything time ago. If you're lying. If we see body cam footage of you. Yeah, no, really, I would imagine maybe
Rich Davis
how about to throw a first pitch
Covino
or something cool like that?
Joey Chestnut
I mean, I, yeah, they, they, they invite me. I don't tell them who I am. It's. But yeah, I've had some good. Oh my God. I've Been super lucky. Invited to. Yeah. Throw some awesome first pitches backstage with C rock bands. And it's been really. It's been. I've had a really good time.
Covino
Okay, so hold on. I gotta be honest with you. I love you, Joey Chestnut. You walk into a restaurant, right? And I know you got people that maybe do this stuff for you sometimes, but they're packed and they're like, we're sorry, sir, we have no. Did you make a reservation? You don't say. Maybe a Joey Chestnut. Maybe. Maybe my name.
Joey Chestnut
You don't do that. No, the movie is you go to the bar and then you have a drink with the bartender. Then the bartender then tells the people the rest. Restaurant manager. Who you are. You don't tell people who you are.
Commercial Voiceover
Yeah, Camino, you know, that's. You never. You never say, do you know who I am? I'm just saying I feel like along the way, like you said, there's perks of being Joey Chestnut. Joey, is there any random athlete, celebrity musician that you were shocked to find out is a big fan of what you do? Like, like, oh, wow, like, that guy knows me?
Joey Chestnut
No, I was at a film festival, and so this. This woman comes up to me and she's like, you know, I'm the press secretary for Mr. Crystal and he would love to meet you. And they were talking about Billy Crystal, legendary actor, comedian, and I was really shocked that he even knew who I was. So that took me back.
Covino
That is pretty amazing, man. We're here with the great Joey Chestnut. Everybody's excited about watching him go for 18 this weekend. Now, you know, we say, you're the goat. You are the goat. And I'm wondering, besides perks and name drops, even though you say you can't do that. And I agree. When it comes to endorsements, what sort of endorsements come with a guy like Joey Chestnut? Like NBA, there's obviously a sneaker. But do people approach Joey Chestnut for a sneaker deal and stuff like that? Like, do you got your eyes on other things? Do you have a dream endorsement? How does that work?
Joey Chestnut
I haven't had the sneaker deal yet. You would think a sneaker company would be smart and really, like, hey, the guy who can eat the most hot dogs is a more normal guy. Like, people don't want. Not everybody slam dunking a basketball. You need to wear the shoe that the guy can eat. And, yeah, you should be able to be able to function and eat. That's. That's more important.
Covino
And you need some comfy shoes to be great. You got to walk off all those hot dog calories afterward, right?
Joey Chestnut
I mean, get those steps.
Commercial Voiceover
Joey, we, we've talked about how many hot dogs you eat and we, in the, the other day, we tried to put in perspective. What's your record again? How many in 10 minutes?
Joey Chestnut
76 dogs and 10 bars. Minutes of playtime.
Commercial Voiceover
76. We were wondering, like, the average guy that has a pretty good appetite, that when he's with his buddies, he could eat a lot. 10 minutes. Is 10 hot dogs in 10 minutes even preposterous or is that realistic for like a regular guy with a good appetite?
Covino
Most.
Joey Chestnut
Well, yeah, it's doable for almost anybody. I think women can do it. It's not that, like, women should do less. I think anybody should be able to do 10 hot dogs and 10 minutes. I, yeah, it's not that hard. It's just like, we were just so used to eating so casually and we, we have, if you eat with a little bit of a sense of urgency, if you had a real job where you only get a certain amount of time to eat, you, you, you can eat, you can put down some food in 10 minutes.
Commercial Voiceover
Yeah, I, I, I thought 10 and 10 seemed pretty standard. When does it get impressive where, like, wow, 20 is like, where's the number where people start to go, Ooh, 20.
Joey Chestnut
20 is where you start. Yeah, that's the real dogs. They got, they got some dog in them. Like a joke. You gotta, like a dog, you gotta, you gotta attack the food and you gotta be a little primal in order to get to 20.
Commercial Voiceover
Joey, does it, did it take a, take time to get used to, like, dipping the bun in water? Because I've, I've done the whole, I wonder what this is like. And the minute I dipped, I tried it. I dipped the hot dog in the bun. I'm like, the soggy bun. Do you ever get used to soggy bunny?
Joey Chestnut
Yeah, it took forever. Yeah, I'm not a psycho. I don't do that for fun. It would, no, no, I really tried not to do it, but it makes sense when you really start looking at it. It takes the air out of the bun, the hot water. I'm using, like, really warm water. So it helps, it helps everything relax. Helps your muscles relax and get the food to start just digesting quickly.
Covino
Hey, Joey, of course I don't want to bring up the down times in your career because most of it has been kick ass and you're the champion, but what happened when you lost? No, no, I don't, no, no, no. But like, what happens when you lost. Like, was it one of those days where you, like, you know, that just wasn't my day because most of the time you dominate bad, sad couple months.
Joey Chestnut
Well, the year before I got engaged, I was engaged and I was supposed to get married in June. So I was like, I wasn't having the best year. And I went into the fourth of July. July. I, yeah, we ended up calling off the engagement and calling the wedding and yeah, my, my head wasn't in the right place.
Covino
So it was more, it was a mental or preparation or both. In that, in that case, it was,
Joey Chestnut
you know, there was preparation. I, I, I was getting complacent. I, and, and you know, you know, I, that's, these are lame excuses. The truth is Matt Stoney was hunger. He ate more than me that day.
Wells Fargo Ad Narrator
Day.
Joey Chestnut
And he's an awesome eater. And I, I should have. I. If I wanted to win, I, I, that, that year I, I didn't eat enough to win.
Covino
And honest to God, that, that loss
Joey Chestnut
back hungrier the next year.
Covino
Hell yeah. That's a, it's an amazing story. But do you still dwell on that a little bit? Like, damn it, Matt Stoney, even though you're giving him his props now, is there a part of you there? Are you just. Hey, it's,
Joey Chestnut
it's not even that. Sorry. I know good things came out of it. I went back to the table, went back to the drawing board and came back super hungry. For years and years, I hadn't crossed the 70 mark. And as soon as I came back after I lost the next year, I went above 70 hot dogs for the first time ever. So losing, making mistakes, it's part of life. And learning from them and coming back better from them, it's. That's what we all try to do.
Covino
That being said, who's your biggest competition tomorrow? Or do you not even look at it that way? How does that work for you?
Joey Chestnut
My competition as an actual competitor, there's. There's Pat Bertoletti. He is a great competitor. My competition, it's me versus numbers. Me versus the weather. Me versus the dog. Dogs. I'm trying to get, Trying to. Me versus old, old man. Father time. I'm getting older, so I, I want to get. It'd be great to get a record at 42. Hit that 76 dog mark. But we'll see. We'll see if I got it in me.
Commercial Voiceover
Yeah, Joey, that's, it's, it's wild to think like LeBron James, he's playing one more year by the way, do you have any thoughts of where LeBron James ends up? He said he's open to, to anywhere.
Joey Chestnut
Yeah. Come on. Really? He wants to go back to Cleveland. You think he has to say that he'll go anywhere. He really wants to finish in Cleveland, be a mentor. And, and I, I feel like there's, he has a connection there that nobody. Yeah, he, but he, like, on paper, he has to say he's open to go anywhere right now.
Commercial Voiceover
LeBron again, one more year.
Kal Penn
Year.
Commercial Voiceover
But he could probably play more than one more year because he's, he's still playing at an elite level. Is Joey Chess not going to walk away from hot dog eating when people start beating him? Or when it's like, I've got nothing more to prove? Because you got nothing more to prove now? Like, are you going to slow down? Is it going to be one of those, like, one year? I've won my 25th in a row. Good night, everyone. Like, what's, what's the Joey Chestnut plan?
Joey Chestnut
I don't think anybody's special. And no, I really believe, believes there's going to be a point in time where there's some animal competitive eater who's going to come out and he's going to, he's going to put me down. I won't have, I won't have to go 25 years, but if they beat me once, then I'll have to try to try to beat him and get it back. But we'll see what happens. I'm taking it one day at a time, one dog at a time. And, dude, Fourth of July tomorrow. It's going to be beautiful.
Covino
Oh, can't wait to watch, man. Traditions. Joey Chestnut with Covino and Rich. We're going to a listener question right now. He's amateur eater himself. Greg Mercer in Pittsburgh says it's going to be 100 degrees tomorrow in Coney Island. Have you been training and eating in the heat to acclimate? And how much more difficult is it for you in your sport when it's hot like that?
Joey Chestnut
Yeah, I actually, I went to Florida. I did one practice in Florida and it was really, really hot and sticky and numbers went down a little bit.
Rich Davis
Bit.
Joey Chestnut
But I, I was really happy with how I performed, and I, I feel like it's highly unlikely that it's going to help. It could hurt a little bit. But, but it's gonna, I, I, if, if I get good dogs. Oh, my God. If the dogs are great, the buns aren't stale. It's, we could be Looking, I. I feel like that everything. The 76 is still in RA.
Covino
Hey, by the way, is that's your record. 76. Obviously, the country started in 1776. Is that the magic number? Like, if you go 77 and you got more in you, do you stop at 76 just to be like, 76? As we celebrate 250 years? Is that it? Or do you want to break your own record?
Joey Chestnut
That's what I'm saying. If I hit 76, I'm saying I did it on purpose.
Commercial Voiceover
There you go.
Joey Chestnut
Honestly, when I'm in the zone, I have no control. My brain is. Brain's not really working. Working. And I'm just gonna. There's. Yeah, I'm just gonna go until. Go until they stop me.
Commercial Voiceover
Joey, can you take us through one of the coolest Joey Chestnut moments of all time? When you're mid competition and some doofus jumps on stage, some jabroni gets in your face, and you have to fight him off and whoop his ass. Can you bring us through that moment?
Joey Chestnut
Oh, my God. So it was kind of. It's a blur. All I remember really is, like, thinking that the. The people who give hot dogs, they bumped into me really hard. Hard. And I was like, oh, they. They bumped into me hard. And then. Then I don't even remember grabbing the guy, but I. And then I remember, like, apparently I grabbed him by the neck a little bit and he fell to the ground. And. But then I. Then. Then I'm like, oh, my God, the contest is still going. So I had to eat the hot dogs over my hand and just keep going. But, yeah, he was a protester. He. He didn't need, like, f. Factory farms.
Rich Davis
Factory farms aren't too cool.
Joey Chestnut
But, yeah, he shouldn't have got him on stage.
Covino
Man, I wish you were available for some of the protesters out here causing traffic jams. Like, sent Joey Chestnut up there, put him in a headlock.
Joey Chestnut
I'm way better at eating.
Covino
Is it true, Joey Chestnut? This is another listener question. Is Mark, in Colorado, is it true that you send every text ending with a hot dog emoji? Is that true or no stuff, too?
Joey Chestnut
No, no, no. I send a good number of them with the hot dog emoji. And there's times where I end with so many hot dog emojis. Like, my record, 76 hot dogs.
Covino
I heard a rumor you end. Yeah, with 76 emojis.
Commercial Voiceover
I was gonna say Joey. Joey Chestnut. Now I have a question. When you do the Nathan's hot dog eating contest every year, you get A. You get a belt. Correct.
Joey Chestnut
You have belts? I have belts up the wazoo.
Commercial Voiceover
I was gonna say, where do you. Because I, I can only imagine. Like, you know, sometimes you go to someone's house and, oh, maybe they won some nice award, you know? Do you have them displayed? Do you have a room where it's like the, the trophy room of Joey Chestnut?
Joey Chestnut
I have, I have my office, which is like a trophy room. I have a couple friends who own restaurants. They. They display a couple belts. The belts, they've gotten better over the years. Nathan's and the sponsors of. They keep stepping it up, and it gives me more reason to get a new belt.
Covino
It's Covino and Rich and for the great Dan Patrick, Fourth of July weekend. So we bring you the best. Joey Chestnut is the best, and he's going for title 18 this weekend. You know, you got it. Let's say you got it. We gotta assume you got this and you got more in you. How many more do you think you got in you?
Wells Fargo Ad Narrator
You.
Covino
And what do you want Joey's Chestnuts legacy to be? That's sort of like a deeper question. Yeah, but, yeah, because you've been doing it so long, man, you're synonymous with. Everybody knows.
Joey Chestnut
I. Oh, I don't know. Legacy. I, I think, I think that's. I don't. I'm not looking for legacy. I'm just. I'm just having. Doing what I love to do. I love eating. I love beating the heck out of people in competition. And yeah, this is fun. I get to travel and just have. Have a blast. And I, I consider myself just super lucky. A lot of. Lot of. I, I, you know, I went to school for engineering. That's a real job. Working construction, dealing with, like, change orders and other people's money. It's like, dude, it's stressful. This, this. I, I'm the best gig there is, and I'm gonna ride this thing until the wheels fall off.
Commercial Voiceover
Hello, Joey Chestnut, synonymous with the Fourth of July. One last question. We'll let you go and people could. We'll let you know where. Everyone could check out Joey tomorrow. An annual tradition. Is there one food that you're like, yeah, I'm not eating this in mass amounts. Is there something you've tried to do a competition with? And you're like, no, this is, this is just not. I'm not doing it.
Joey Chestnut
Oh, my God. So every, Every. You've heard of this mayonnaise bowl that they have? Every now and then, people like, oh, my God, we want you eat Mayonnaise in mass quantities, I'm like, oh, no, I think straight mayonnaise. Anybody who eats straight mayonnaise, it should be legal. It's not. Okay. And mayonnaise is all right on blt, but mass quantities of mayonnaise, it's. It's something I've turned down again and again.
Commercial Voiceover
Yeah, I don't blame you on that one.
Covino
Our producer Danny G. Has one last question. You said if you get good dogs tomorrow, if you get good dogs, and we're all hoping for a great buns the whole weekend. We want great buns.
Jonas Knox
Right?
Covino
If you got good dogs, what's the best way to cook a hot dog for the people getting ready for their big cookout this weekend? Joey?
Joey Chestnut
Oh, yes. Oh, at home. I love it over charcoal. Real charcoal grill. It's great. The gas grill is awesome. Flat top griddle. Oh, that's tits. It's really good. Yeah, but anything but boiled duck. Keep the dirty water dogs out of my Fourth of July celebration.
Covino
All right, man. Hey, we wish you the best. We know you've got it. You're the man. We appreciate you being here again for people. To keep in mind, he has the record 76. As you know, we celebrate 1776. 76 dogs in 10 minutes. What does he get? Tomorrow it's going to be on ESPN2 starting noon Eastern. Right. And it's simulcasted on ABC. Give us the details, man, because we all want to tune in. You on? Oh, yeah, it's going to be.
Joey Chestnut
Yeah, live on. Yeah, on ABC, I think 12:30 Eastern Time. And ESPN or ESPN2 is starting at 12.
Covino
Yeah.
Jonas Knox
And.
Joey Chestnut
And it's going to be. This is, this is going to be one for the record books. And it's going to be hot, humid, but we're going to be pushing hard. And it. I'm going to ignore every feeling of my body to come out on top.
Covino
And you're going to the, to the weigh in right now?
Joey Chestnut
Oh, on my way to the way. They're gonna weigh my fat body. And hopefully, you know, I'm feeling light, actually. I'm feeling pretty good. There's room for 75 to 80 hot dogs. We'll see what happens.
Commercial Voiceover
Joey, real quick, if you weighed yourself right before and after the 76 dogs, how much, how much do you put on? Like is. What's the sizable difference on a scale before and after the hot dogs by themselves?
Joey Chestnut
Like 75 hot dogs by themselves, I want to say weighs 17 lbs. Pounds. And then during the contest, I'm taking about a gallon of at least a gallon of water. So. So we're talking 24, 25 pounds in, in that 10 minutes. And. But I'm sweating like an animal. So I lose a little bit of sweat. I'm gaining all the water. Yeah. So. But I think 25, 26 pounds would be, would be a record weight.
Commercial Voiceover
Oh, my God. Well, hey, good luck tomorrow. We love having you on, Joey. A good annual tradition. We appreciate you giving us time, my friend.
Joey Chestnut
Oh, great talking to Gus.
