And I mentioned this to Lavar, I think, on Friday. But, Brady, I don't know if you've. You've noticed this or if anybody's noticed this. I think there's something that's making a comeback. Lung darts. I'm telling you, I see more and more people smoking cigs now, like, all the time, and I really do think it's making a cut. I don't know what it is. It just. Maybe it's because it's been gone for so long that you see two or three people and it stands out. But I'm telling you, man, more and more people are going the lung dart route when they're out and about.

But I, I can't share in that same respect. I think there's actually been a lot of other nicotine options that I've seen. It feels like everyone's doing zins, everyone's doing some sort of nicotine pouch. That. That's what I'd say is most prevalent. I have. I've not seen an uptick in people smoking cigs.

Open your eyes, man. Just look around. Yeah, look around, man. While we can argue about the point that lung darts may or may not be back in style. You know what else is back in style? The Caitlin Clark discussion. Here we go again. Yeah, yeah. Tis the season. Oh, it's. It's off and running. The way she's treated in the league, the way she's officiated, there's Caitlyn's life matters. It's, it's, it's a real. It's a real thing.

So what now, Jonas? What is the uproar now about in the w. I have to be honest, I don't watch. I do see some of the social media accounts and some of the articles,

but I don't want to eat our ass out there.

So they don't like, you know, the hard foul. She went down on the ground. It looked like, you know, the, the gal put her fist on her throat.

It looked like.

Or was it like strategically positioned on her throat?

But see, here's, here's where I look at this.

[Rich Davis]

Oh, does she flop though? Like, that's the other question to all this. Like, are they legitimate hard fouls or she flop.

[Kal Penn]

She is a facilitator for certain. But the, the getting lit up is definitely real. It's real. She's getting lit up. I mean, but she's not. It's not like she's like about this though.

[Rich Davis]

I mean, like, isn't that one of the things you do to a smaller player? Like if, if you're trying to get in the head of an opponent, aren't you going to try to be more physical? Aren't you going to do something like

[Kal Penn]

a little bit dirty?

Yes.

And she tries to get. And she tries to get in their heads back though. I think that, that not discussed as much. But she is trying. She tries to get like she's a trash talker. She tries to get into people's heads as well. And, and she has her way of going about doing things. But that does not. In, in this instance of what Jonas is bringing up, they are.

It's become a race thing.

[Kal Penn]

Is that what it is now she's being targeted. I don't think that it's just black players that are jacking her ass up. Is white players too. I mean, it's. I think it's a WNBA thing. It's a I'm not Caitlin Clark thing, to be honest. I don't know that it falls into the racial category. I think that might have came out by now if it was racially speaking. Now Whitlock takes it down the, the, that lane. What Whitlock will tell you, he'll let you know how he feels about it in that direction. But I just think that this is a girl that people are there. They, they don't feel like she should get the attention that she gets praised the way that she's praised.

That's ultimately what this comes down to, is the WNBA has been in existence for a long time and happened to find this rocket star, you know, this rocket ship of a, you know, talent and branding and everything from her days at Iowa playing, you know, basketball there now to the wnba. And it's created so much more attention and focus and I can understand why there's so many past great players who are you Know, frustrated by it, who are most mostly jealous, if we're being honest about it. And people who feel like they've, you know, built this league up to a certain point before she got there, and they never got this attention, they never got those dues. I would just generally say this because we, we've talked about this in regards to the comparison between Caitlin Clark and Steph Curry. Like, she is essentially the female version of Steph Curry, where when Steph Curry came along, his game was relatable. You know, I remember loving to watch Vince Carter because he was a high flying best dunker. You know, basically made it impossible for anyone who went up against him in a dunk contest to have much of a shot to beat him. And it was must see TV because he was doing things that no one else really could do. And then you, you pass along to a guy like Steph Curry and he's a player that, well, yeah, no one's gonna be able to shoot with the consistency that he does from the logo or from half court or from, you know, way outside the three point line. And so him doing that is obviously like a goal. It's something that everyone tries to aspire to be. But one thing they can all try to be is that because not everyone's gonna be able to tall enough to dunk or have the hops to dunk everything else. And then Caitlin Clark's kind of come along and been like that female version of that. Right. And that's one of the things that I feel like, you know, maybe it's because she, she's not as skilled in some other apartment departments or she's not as big as, you know, talented as some of the others. But the reality is no one watched women's basketball the same way they have now with Caitlin Clark because she's doing stuff that we've never seen before. Show me past the past history of WNBA players pulling up from the range to hit threes like she does.

You can't find it. No one's doing that stuff when she was doing in college, like, that's what made it so attractive. That's what made it. People go so crazy about it because she was doing on a consistent basis and was successful doing it. And so that's, to me, where it's like, all right, like, I, I can understand the hype around it. I can understand that, you know, the. Everything she's created, but I don't understand how the WNBA doesn't embrace this. And it feels like they ostracize her in A manner that forces her to have to like defend herself every time you hear a story or you look at what's happening out there. I mean, the officiating is the officiating. Look, the officiating isn't great regardless of any professional league. So as far as the physicality to the game and how that goes, that's on the officials. You know, they have to do a better job of being able to protect a lot of the players out there so things don't get out of hand. And if they are targeting her because she's a smaller player and they feel like this is the way you can get her head, this is the way you can force her to have a bad shooting night. That, that scheme, that's tactics. That's just a reality of how things are going to go. And by the way, that's not just basketball, that's any sport. So I look at it and just say like, it doesn't make any sense to me that you have this shooting star that comes into your league and instead of embracing her, instead of getting behind it, you then kind of put her off out on an island where she almost has to be a villain to some or it feels like that as opp. To her being the hero to so many others that watch her. But maybe that's the point. Maybe it's the fact that because she's polarizing to some of the their own players in the WNBA that it and maybe even polarizing some of the fans out there that allows us to create more attention. Because as good as the WNBA players have been in the past, it's never created this sort of discourse.

[Jonas Knox]

They just come across, the WNBA in general just come across as such a nickel and dime, just like weak league, like poorly run. Like it just, it just, it makes it hard for me to want to sit and keep up and pay attention. Sophie Cunningham seems to be the only one who's just sort of embraced sort of everything that comes along with Caitlin Clark and just like, all right, I mean my, my star is going to rise because of all this like the finger pointing meme, all that stuff. It just like you got something there that you could build around and instead you're trying to tear it down. And I do think that some of the outrage, the way she's treated is, it is a bit overblown. I mean this is, you know, physical basketball, hard fouls, whatnot. But I also don't, I also think that they have not done enough to build it up and promote it in a way to where people are going to be like, oh, yeah, I want to pay attention.

[Kal Penn]

I want to.

[Jonas Knox]

I want to follow along. I want to watch this. I want to see I'm a casual but get me interested instead. That it's turned into racial discussions and all the other things that come along with it. I just think people are over it, man. I think. Just think they're tired of it.

[Kal Penn]

I just don't think the talent level is high enough to not just make it about basketball. Like, if you could just make it. If you could have just made it about basketball, that would be what they make it about. That's what the polarizing storylines would be. The headlines would be. This is clearly a reach to maintain some attention and some relevancy. She's not only driving the league as. As a figure that can shoot the ball the way that she does, but she's also driving the narrative and in the league for attention in terms of how she's being treatment. Her treatment of it. It's kind of funny that the biggest storyline is a young white woman being, for all intents and purposes, discriminated against in her. Her field of work.

Yeah. Well, I mean, it's a. It's a real topic. Right. I mean, it's one of the top topics that are out there is. Is racial equality and harmonious ways of going about doing things. I mean, it. It exists. And there's probably some racial tones to this that are connected to this. And I mean, there's no getting around that. But again, it ultimately comes down to playing the games, getting through the games. You know, people point out what refs do and what they don't do, coaches included, all the time. You know, people point out what players do all the time. Caitlin Clark just happens to be the most polarizing figure that's ever been a part of the wnba.

it's. I gotta say, it's not because of how good she is. I know we keep throwing out there how good she is, if we were to say greatest basketball player in the women's league of all time. She's not even probably in the top five of the greatest that you would ever say has played in the wnba. And I think that's just reality. Maybe not even top 10. I mean, some would say Cheryl, Cheryl Swoops. Some people say Cheryl Miller is like the greatest basketball player of all time ever in the history of the game, period. There's the Lisa Leslie's of the world there, there, there's like Witherspoon. Like there are some really, really amazing players.

I don't know how far you go with that one. But you know, Tarazi, Stacy Dales.

I don't know how far you go with Stacy Dales. I, I'll just say though, there have been some, some really, really, really deserving talent wise players. I mean, I most would probably say Cheryl Swoops was the Michael Jordan. Like, I hear the comparisons. Oh, she's like. Caitlyn is like the Michael Jordan of the wnba. No, she's not. She's just the first of her kind in, in the wnba, which is. She can hoop. Well, whatever. That, the way she shoots.

I mean, that's what she is.

More of a Steph Curry. Yeah, yeah, more of a Steph Curry the way she shoots. But I've heard, I've heard comparisons to her, to Michael Jordan. She's not comparable to Michael Jordan.

And here's the rule. USA all day. The rule is simple. We've established it. Rich coined it as the Grandma rule. If your ma. If your grandma was from another land, if your grandma had a thick accent

Yeah, yeah. If your grandma had that accent and made you that good food, you're allowed to represent that country. But you can't root against the USA because that's just un American.

So of course pulling for usa, it's not a matter of flip flopping or front running or can't make up your mind sort of thing. It's just sort of the situation we happen to be in as Americans. And the closer to your roots, the more of a, the more of a situation it is. Right. Otherwise, if you're rooting against the USA Today, that's very weak. That's very, very weaker.

They had us riding with Steve Young. And I had to pretend that I wasn't a lifelong 49ers fan and I didn't have a poster of him on my wall.

They had full on crowds outside Ecuador's hotel just to keep them awake to prevent them from sleeping to give team Mexico the advantage. And it looked like right off, right off the jump that they did, Mexico played a solid game.

You don't do that. No, the movie is you go to the bar and then you have a drink with the bartender. Then the bartender then tells the people the rest. Restaurant manager. Who you are. You don't tell people who you are.

No, I was at a film festival, and so this. This woman comes up to me and she's like, you know, I'm the press secretary for Mr. Crystal and he would love to meet you. And they were talking about Billy Crystal, legendary actor, comedian, and I was really shocked that he even knew who I was. So that took me back.

That is pretty amazing, man. We're here with the great Joey Chestnut. Everybody's excited about watching him go for 18 this weekend. Now, you know, we say, you're the goat. You are the goat. And I'm wondering, besides perks and name drops, even though you say you can't do that. And I agree. When it comes to endorsements, what sort of endorsements come with a guy like Joey Chestnut? Like NBA, there's obviously a sneaker. But do people approach Joey Chestnut for a sneaker deal and stuff like that? Like, do you got your eyes on other things? Do you have a dream endorsement? How does that work?

I haven't had the sneaker deal yet. You would think a sneaker company would be smart and really, like, hey, the guy who can eat the most hot dogs is a more normal guy. Like, people don't want. Not everybody slam dunking a basketball. You need to wear the shoe that the guy can eat. And, yeah, you should be able to be able to function and eat. That's. That's more important.

And you need some comfy shoes to be great. You got to walk off all those hot dog calories afterward, right?

I mean, get those steps.

Joey, we, we've talked about how many hot dogs you eat and we, in the, the other day, we tried to put in perspective. What's your record again? How many in 10 minutes?

76. We were wondering, like, the average guy that has a pretty good appetite, that when he's with his buddies, he could eat a lot. 10 minutes. Is 10 hot dogs in 10 minutes even preposterous or is that realistic for like a regular guy with a good appetite?

Most.

[Joey Chestnut]

Well, yeah, it's doable for almost anybody. I think women can do it. It's not that, like, women should do less. I think anybody should be able to do 10 hot dogs and 10 minutes. I, yeah, it's not that hard. It's just like, we were just so used to eating so casually and we, we have, if you eat with a little bit of a sense of urgency, if you had a real job where you only get a certain amount of time to eat, you, you, you can eat, you can put down some food in 10 minutes.

Yeah, I, I, I thought 10 and 10 seemed pretty standard. When does it get impressive where, like, wow, 20 is like, where's the number where people start to go, Ooh, 20.

[Joey Chestnut]

20 is where you start. Yeah, that's the real dogs. They got, they got some dog in them. Like a joke. You gotta, like a dog, you gotta, you gotta attack the food and you gotta be a little primal in order to get to 20.

Joey, does it, did it take a, take time to get used to, like, dipping the bun in water? Because I've, I've done the whole, I wonder what this is like. And the minute I dipped, I tried it. I dipped the hot dog in the bun. I'm like, the soggy bun. Do you ever get used to soggy bunny?

[Joey Chestnut]

Yeah, it took forever. Yeah, I'm not a psycho. I don't do that for fun. It would, no, no, I really tried not to do it, but it makes sense when you really start looking at it. It takes the air out of the bun, the hot water. I'm using, like, really warm water. So it helps, it helps everything relax. Helps your muscles relax and get the food to start just digesting quickly.

[Covino]

Hey, Joey, of course I don't want to bring up the down times in your career because most of it has been kick ass and you're the champion, but what happened when you lost? No, no, I don't, no, no, no. But like, what happens when you lost. Like, was it one of those days where you, like, you know, that just wasn't my day because most of the time you dominate bad, sad couple months.

[Joey Chestnut]

Well, the year before I got engaged, I was engaged and I was supposed to get married in June. So I was like, I wasn't having the best year. And I went into the fourth of July. July. I, yeah, we ended up calling off the engagement and calling the wedding and yeah, my, my head wasn't in the right place.

[Covino]

So it was more, it was a mental or preparation or both. In that, in that case, it was,

[Joey Chestnut]

you know, there was preparation. I, I, I was getting complacent. I, and, and you know, you know, I, that's, these are lame excuses. The truth is Matt Stoney was hunger. He ate more than me that day.

And he's an awesome eater. And I, I should have. I. If I wanted to win, I, I, that, that year I, I didn't eat enough to win.

it's not even that. Sorry. I know good things came out of it. I went back to the table, went back to the drawing board and came back super hungry. For years and years, I hadn't crossed the 70 mark. And as soon as I came back after I lost the next year, I went above 70 hot dogs for the first time ever. So losing, making mistakes, it's part of life. And learning from them and coming back better from them, it's. That's what we all try to do.

That being said, who's your biggest competition tomorrow? Or do you not even look at it that way? How does that work for you?

[Joey Chestnut]

My competition as an actual competitor, there's. There's Pat Bertoletti. He is a great competitor. My competition, it's me versus numbers. Me versus the weather. Me versus the dog. Dogs. I'm trying to get, Trying to. Me versus old, old man. Father time. I'm getting older, so I, I want to get. It'd be great to get a record at 42. Hit that 76 dog mark. But we'll see. We'll see if I got it in me.

Yeah, Joey, that's, it's, it's wild to think like LeBron James, he's playing one more year by the way, do you have any thoughts of where LeBron James ends up? He said he's open to, to anywhere.

[Joey Chestnut]

Yeah. Come on. Really? He wants to go back to Cleveland. You think he has to say that he'll go anywhere. He really wants to finish in Cleveland, be a mentor. And, and I, I feel like there's, he has a connection there that nobody. Yeah, he, but he, like, on paper, he has to say he's open to go anywhere right now.

But he could probably play more than one more year because he's, he's still playing at an elite level. Is Joey Chess not going to walk away from hot dog eating when people start beating him? I'm taking it one day at a time, one dog at a time. And, dude, Fourth of July tomorrow. It's going to be beautiful.

Yeah, I actually, I went to Florida. I did one practice in Florida and it was really, really hot and sticky and numbers went down a little bit.

But I, I was really happy with how I performed, and I, I feel like it's highly unlikely that it's going to help. It could hurt a little bit. But, but it's gonna, I, I, if, if I get good dogs. Oh, my God. So it was kind of. It's a blur. All I remember really is, like, thinking that the. The people who give hot dogs, they bumped into me really hard. Hard. And I was like, oh, they. They bumped into me hard. And then. Then I don't even remember grabbing the guy, but I. And then I remember, like, apparently I grabbed him by the neck a little bit and he fell to the ground. And. But then I. Then. Then I'm like, oh, my God, the contest is still going. So I had to eat the hot dogs over my hand and just keep going. But, yeah, he was a protester. He. He didn't need, like, f. Factory farms.

Like 75 hot dogs by themselves, I want to say weighs 17 lbs. Pounds. And then during the contest, I'm taking about a gallon of at least a gallon of water. So. So we're talking 24, 25 pounds in, in that 10 minutes. And. But I'm sweating like an animal. So I lose a little bit of sweat. I'm gaining all the water. Yeah. So. But I think 25, 26 pounds would be, would be a record weight.
