Because, by the way, what sort of trash bag puts this out there? I don't know. You know, I sort of had a taste of this the other day, Rich. I was in the sauna. Yeah. And I'm nobody famous. Yeah, right. I'm infamous, which is more than famous.

I think he was just recording your feet.

No, seriously. I was like, what's he doing? He's got the camera up and it's pointing at me. What is he, like, sharing this with his, like, vato buddies?

I don't know what was going on, but he was recording me. Either way, the story goes that LeBron James is at some sort of. Is it like a sushi spot? It looks like a hibachi spot.

He's at some swanky Asian restaurant. I don't know if it's a Japanese restaurant or what, but you see him there. And then there's another cut of, like, someone is trying to hide it, but they're recording. Overheard LeBron James saying, I ain't mad looking at New York. She meaning his wife, Savannah. Want me to effing retire in a year or so. LeBron James. And you probably heard the audio. It's. It's muddled, but it's legit or it seems real.

[Danny G]

Yeah.

[Covino]

You've heard other people talking about it, so it got us thinking about LeBron James. And all these moving parts.

[Danny G]

The layers of LeBron.

[Covino]

The layers of LeBron. Exactly. Because LeBron James exercised his $52.6 million Lakers contract option ahead of this season, which means he's wearing purple and gold this season. He's still a Laker, but after that, the options open. Meaning last year they gave him one and one. This year he's just getting the one. So he could still be traded, but it has to be run by LeBron. But he's playing with the Lakers. Next year's open. That's the question. So what's he going to do? I don't understand the New York reference. Unless he's meaning the Knicks or moving.

[Danny G]

There or maybe post retirement, has some business opportunities. Like, it's. It's vague.

[Covino]

It's vague. But either way, he's saying that the pressure's on. Wifey saying one more year, which means she's getting a little antsy and agitated. And to be quite honest, she's been very patient. The guy's played a long time.

[Danny G]

I mean, deja vu. Didn't we see this with Tom Brady? One year too many could mean trouble in paradise.

[Covino]

Absolutely. You don't want LeBron's wife ending up with the kung fu instructor or the jiu jitsu, instructor, whatever.

[Danny G]

Well, there's so many layers. As to LeBron James and what the future holds, our very own Dan Patrick, the legend that we fill in for this Thursday, was saying, I believe that he thinks this is the Farewell tour for LeBron James.

[Covino]

I agree.

[Danny G]

This is going to be the year where it's sort of a spoken unspoken, maybe he makes an announcement, but this is. This is it. And perhaps, Danny G, you're a big Lakers fan, if they could add a guy like. This is.

[Covino]

It was Michael Jackson's farewell tour.

[Danny G]

That is true.

[Covino]

This is LeBron's last year. I agree with Dan Patrick wholeheartedly. I think with this no trade clause, he stays a Laker one more year to see what sort of moves they make. This year, they're gonna build the team around Luca, but he's gonna stick around one more year to see if they can recapture any fortune and glory before he dips out. But this is his last year goodbye. He's not gonna go out and pull an Aaron Rodgers per se, meaning end up on another random team for one more year. How many more years does he have after this year? One more.

[Danny G]

I mean, we forget.

[Covino]

No way. Hold on. Unless he goes back to Cleveland, we.

[Danny G]

Forget that he is still an impact player. LeBron James is still an impact player.

[Covino]

But he's still ready to retire and has life to live.

[Danny G]

This is not a, this is not a guy who's, you know, now he's, you know, there's, there's guys that, oh, now he's scoring 18. He's still LeBron James. And Danny, you're a Lakers fan. I was going to say, if they add a piece, I'm seeing some rumors about deandre Ayton. Yeah, if a guy like eight and a big man, if they get, if they add a piece like that, does LeBron have a chance to go out like, like a John Elway, like win and retire?

Or is that, that would be nice, right? I mean, is that, I mean this always comes up whenever LeBron ops into an extension or a contract. The, the murmurs are always. Well, he wants to see still if they're going to put winners around him. So we've, we've seen this song and dance before. There are people who don't agree that this is going to be a farewell tour, that he's still going another two or three seasons. I know. Buyer, over the weekend there's a video clip from Fox Sports where you're saying you don't think it's a farewell.

Yeah, yeah, I don't think it is. But I think it's the Lakers saying farewell to LeBron that, that basically in year like last off season, they sent him to a one on one deal. It said one year contract with a player option for the next. I don't think they wanted to give him an option for the next year and I don't think that there was any teams that he wanted to go to this year that would have the money to pay him what he wanted. So I think he just opted in. But I think next year gives all those other team the ability to maybe get ready for LeBron to leave LA and then he'll have his swan song, which I always felt was going back to Cleveland.

That would be the only last year. Yeah, I agree.

So that's why I don't think that it's, I don't think next year is his last year. I think he wants that go around the league and be honored for an entire season before he calls it.

[Covino]

Let's do the math. Thank you. DB Dan Beyer, do you agree with what dan's saying here 87799 on Fox or what Dan Patrick said earlier, that it is his farewell tour? I am caught in the middle because I do agree that if it is another year or two after this year with The Lakers. It can only be with Cleveland. He's just a kid from Akron, Ohio. It's not going to be with the Knicks.

Been there, done that. I don't know. New York could be a very interesting. Really Farewell. And you heard him say New York.

[Covino]

He does say New York in that weird recorded clip.

[Danny G]

What Dan Byer says is interesting because that has happened in other sports where a star player is told by the organization like, hey, listen, like almost insinuating, like if you're going to hang it up, this is your failure. Well, tour from us, like I feel like that's been done with other players in other sports where you see a guy will be like, well, they thought I was done, but I'm really not done. And he might just be done in la.

Well, in a few weeks ago we talked about the Guggenheim group coming in. They have no loyalty to LeBron. And point. Yeah, at the time, remember we were saying like they, they are going to build for the future around Luka. So it would not surprise me if the writing is on the wall between the Lakers and LeBron.

And not to upon my Sunday show, but yesterday I compared it to marriages. That's how I've been doing it.

There have been marriages that people are madly in love after 50 years and there are others that are marriages out of convenience. And once one needs more than the other, doesn't need the other one more than the other, then it breaks. And I feel that's what happened with LeBron and the Lakers where now the Lakers, because they have Luka, they don't need LeBron as much anymore. So they're going to go their own way and then LeBron will end up going his.

[Covino]

Well, man, it's a lot to take in, a lot of moving parts. He's got the no trade clause. Like we said, he's got one more year. This coming year with the Lakers. He's 40 years old now. It's a matter of how much gas you think he really has. And you already alluded to it, Rich. His stats show that he's still an effective player. But how much longer could he possibly want to play? He's 40 now.

[Danny G]

But once you stop, it's over, buddy.

[Covino]

This year, okay, Lakers, you think he's got one or two more years after that? Because if it's one, then I definitely think it's Cleveland because you retire with that team I love the most.

[Danny G]

There's two teams.

[Covino]

If it's more than one year, then yeah, maybe the Knicks. I don't think you Just go out with some random team. The fact that Aaron Rodgers is doing that to me, tarnishes the legacy a little bit. The parody, every big star just dwindle off on random teams. I hate that. Look, I don't think LeBron has.

[Danny G]

Is going to do that in the Eastern Conference. It just feels very wide open. Right. Like the Pacers made the NBA Finals, but, you know, Halliburton's. Now he's gone for a year. The. I'm just saying, like the Eastern Conference, the Knicks and Cavs, the two teams you mentioned, are both right there. Add LeBron to either one of those two teams and you could argue that, well, they're the best team now in the Eastern Conference.

Well, then I'll throw this out.

Throw Boston in there, too. But he's not going there if they.

[Covino]

Could force the trade. Right. You think he could say he wants to go to the Knicks this year?

[Danny G]

No, I think. I think we got one more in. In la.

Well, he supposed to. Yeah, that was the option.

This is the awesome thing about it is there are really no wrong answers because you don't know what LeBron is going to do. I don't know if teams are really set up to do anything this offseason for him, but it could be tricky. But I. It's. It's all out there. I read Rich Paul's statement different than other people read it, and taking my own thing. So there's. Everything is on the table when it comes to LeBron, huh?

I was talking to some of the dads on the. On my son's baseball team. We're chatting about this, and we're saying that the NBA should hope that LeBron keeps these theatrics and this going because you've noticed that the LeBron, Steph Curry, that generation of superstars, as they age, unless these young stars start emerging, the NBA is going to. They don't want yo saying goodbye to LeBron and Steph in a few years. That's not good for the NBA. These theatrics are great.

What's interesting also is Laker fans are split on this. There's some who are tired of LeBron in the circus around him. Like my cousin who was in our group chat last night saying farewell, if he's going to, you know, agree to a trade and go out there said.

You'Re open to him.

Yeah. I mean, if they put the right players around Luca and get a couple of bigs, then they'll be all right and they'll be set for the future.

Well, Aiden has stated that he wants to play with Luca. Not necessarily.

Your cousin. I have met fan friends like that. I have 49er fan friends like that where they have this, like, fire the coach or get rid of this player and it's like. And replace it with who?

[Covino]

That's a good point. And the other point we made, and you forgot your own point, Rich. Or maybe you were getting to it. I'm sorry, you were getting to it, probably, but when we were doing our pre show meeting, you were saying how people should be kissing LeBron's ass because we're never going to see this again. And you got to take it all in. Like, he's underappreciated almost. You were going on this rant.

[Danny G]

I think that we're going to look back. LeBron's a great example of this. Happens a lot with politicians on both sides, right? Where it's like you can't really assess their value, their value, or their tenure impact until years later. And I think we're going to look back and be like, man, we're really. I know he brought it on himself a little bit with the. Not 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, all that nonsense.

Very outspoken guy. So, yeah, he got a lot of criticism.

I think we are going to look back and be like, yeah, he did a couple boneheaded things that made it easy to pick on him. But we're going to look back and say, we were really rough on a guy that was, like, really solid on and off the court. Like, we were really sort of jerks.

Starting now, this weekend. This is the beginning of the end to see pretty much your start figuring out how it all ends and how it wraps up. Will it be as a Laker, will it be as a Nick, all these little rumors and. Or will it be like Dan Byer said, Cleveland, which I think would be a fitting sort of farewell.

And Rich will miss him in the playoffs, in the Finals. But let's be real, some of this LeBron fatigue, even with his own team's fan base, is brought on by himself a lot of it off the court.

I just feel like the end of LeBron feels like the, you know, when a sitcom or a drama you watch is ending. And, you know, they always add some, like, you know, redheaded kid or some.

[Covino]

Like, step kid or Sam with the.

[Danny G]

Cowboy hat or, you know, or the. They, you know, Michael Scott's replaced on the office by someone else, and there's always that. But I feel like if LeBron were to go to one team at the end, it would be like, Emmett Smith as a Cardinal or, you know, Jerry Rice putting on, like, a Seahawks uniform.

[Covino]

Rogers as a Steeler, though the Steelers are respectable. Like, him as a Steeler for one year is weird, you know?

[Danny G]

God, please, no.

Yeah, but. But Emmett Smith's numbers as a Cardinal, Rich, were not like LeBron's numbers last season.

[Danny G]

That's true. I just. To me, it's like, it's interesting, and you guys are all right. I think everyone in the room is right, and Dan's right that you. You can't be wrong because we're still waiting to see what's happening.

Yeah. And I started Emmett Smith in some fantasy leagues when he was with the Cardinals. So that tells you how bad of a fantasy football player.

Just. They weren't Emmett Smith numbers.

Yeah, I mean, he didn't do. You know, when you look. He did better than you think.

I thought he had, like, 900 yards or, like, you know, close to a thousand or something.

Yeah, in my mind, he had, like, 100 yards. But no, he was, like, relatively effective for a minute in Arizona.

But you know what? It's a simple strategy. We're talking about it. It keeps him relevant, keeps him in the news. It keeps him valuable. People start whispering they want a piece of LeBron for that farewell tour. Right. It's like on Love Island, Rich, you may be in love or complacent on a particular team or with a particular person, but why not keep your options open just to see what's out there? And that's what he's doing. So we'll see. He's got one more year with the Lakers and a no trade clause. How will this all wrap up? How will this end? We'll find out. And what do you think about that whole New York thing? That was weird.

And also the pressure from his wife. I think that does say a lot. I think that says if we're gonna learn anything from Brady. That was a great example, Rich, that I think that adds to this probably is his last year. His wife is putting that sort of pressure on him.

Yeah. Well, he was there with his buddy David Bakhtiari. Now, over the weekend, Bakhtiari threw out a tweet on the Olex page. He threw out an X. What do we say? Have we confirmed how to.

Well, you're also the guy that refused to say grande at Starbucks of the day. Medium. And they go grande and you go medium.

What would he say? He posted an X. Yeah, it's like.

He posted a tweet that said, love is love. Congrats to the loves. Oh, he said, just happy. At least one of my quarterbacks invited me to their wedding. And he put that, like, shocking look emoji, like, yeah, I'm talking smack and I'm talking about Aaron Rodgers. So here they are, buddy. Chummy, one year. Teammates, big screen. Chugging beers, high five and chest bumping. Bakhtiari and Rogers and you know, Rogers played a few seasons without him. Life goes on. Life moves on. He took it to heart. Now, is that on him or is it on Rogers? I think it's on him. To be honest. That's my first instinct here because I have a story that backs up Rogers.

I. I remember when I got married, stressing over Mattied. Who am I leaving off the list? Is someone gonna get butthurt? Am I offending someone? And then you realize if you don't get invited somewhere, you don't really care that much. And then you realize you're overthinking it. And if someone were to put an.

Invite from an Aaron Rodgers probably means a lot more. There are.

[Danny G]

Sometimes it is an indicator of where that person sees you and looks at you. Yeah, Aaron Rodgers, Batiari might have thought, like, he's my number one best friend, that I played for Batiatus, Batiatas of.

Spartacus, Bakhtiari, Bakhti Hari.

[Danny G]

But I would imagine he might be thinking, yo, Aaron Rodgers and I were like the 12 combo center quarterback for four years. Like, the guy gets married and I'm not there.

[Covino]

I'm the last to know. I see where I stand. Well, you know what? Life moves on. That's really it. Now, I'm sad to say this, and sometimes people misread the room, maybe on their level of importance in your life. And I know that sounds terrible. I'll give you my example. I had a daughter. I still do. She's a teenage pain in the ass. But when I had her in 2009, right, I gave birth. I was the first man to give birth.

[Danny G]

You had no. What was that Bad Arnold movie?

[Covino]

I don't know. I looked pregnant when she was born, that's for sure. I ballooned up. But anyway, I had my daughter and we had her christening maybe about a year or so later, right? And you post some pictures on Facebook or whatever. Hey, we had our little blessing and our christening and here's the pictures for the family.

[Danny G]

It was called Junior, by the way.

[Covino]

Junior, that's right. And I remember this is when I took the bus in New York City. I got on the bus from New York City after work to go back to my hometown. And one of my high school buds was on the bus with me. So I saw an old high school bud that I hadn't seen in years on the bus, and he's like, eh, congratulations. I saw you. You had a big party for Your daughter's christening. Like, hey, yeah, thanks, man, I appreciate it. How you been? Bring it in. And he goes to me, no joke. He goes, thanks for the invite. And I thought he was like joking, but he was dead serious. And I'm like, yo, man, we may have been close at one point. I haven't talked to you in like 10 years. Like, seriously, how do you expect that invite? I didn't get a congratulations when my daughter was born. I didn't get a Christmas card for the past 10 years. I didn't get a how do you do that? I'm in town. I haven't heard from you ever. And you're offended that I didn't invite you to my, the christening party.

So. And why would you want to go anywhere you want? But he gave me this east coast, you know, bacha gloop sort of attitude. Thanks for the invite. And I'm like, dude, I wouldn't invited you anyway. But it dawned on me that maybe him and I looked at things differently, just like Atiari and Rogers might look at things differently.

And that's the key. I learned a long time ago, in fact, when I was a young warthog.

When Rich was a young warthog, like.

When I was like, first in radio, you start to work with people day in and day out, and it's shocking sometimes when someone leaves and you don't really hear from him ever again. And you're like, I thought we were boys. And you're like, nah, we were co workers. And it's a. It's a realization that you, you come to over the years. And I feel that applies to teammates. Guys you share a locker room with, the huddle. You, you know, you could be sitting in the bullpen with someone for eight years, they get married, and it's like we were middle relievers together for five years.

Some people are good at separating work and personal. Some people blend it. And I, And I think Aaron Rodgers also had a very small wedding from what I'd imagine. Right?

[Covino]

That's the other thing. Right. He didn't make the cut. Doesn't mean he doesn't appreciate his time with you as a teammate. So I don't know, did he take it personal? Your thoughts on the wedding snub? Steelers acquired corner Jalen Ramsey and tight end John Smith in a trade with the Dolphins. They also get a seventh round pick. As part of the deal, the Dolphins are getting safety Minka Fitzpatrick and a fifth round pick multiple reports say. The Steelers have received calls about TJ Watt, but they are not interested in dealing their star edge rusher who has been missing off season activities as he wants a new contract. ESPN reports the New York Knicks have a second interview set up with Mike Brown about their head coaching vacancy while the Jazz and guard Jordan Clarkson have agreed to a buyout. Nick Batum is going to be back with the Clippers as he's agreed to a two year deal worth $12 million in the NHL. Toront Maple Leafs are signing Mitch Marta to an eight year deal and trading him to the Vegas Golden Knights. While at Wimbledon, Carlos Alcaraz a five set winner today while 12 seeded American Francis Tiafo a straight sets winner on day one at the All England club. And here's what's going on in the WNBA. The league is expanding by three more teams by 2030. So Cleveland, Detroit and Philadelphia are getting squads but the all star squads have been announced. Caitlin Clark one of the 10 starters. But in voting she was first in fan voting, third by the media for backcourt players, ninth in player rankings. So the players, the players had her ninth in voting for the All Stars.

And sort of post the COVID season, there was just a lot of uncertainty. And Bakhtiari greeted Rogers with a custom Aston Martin golf cart that had, like, all this, you know, tricked out stuff on it. And of course, though, Rogers would be like, well, this was actually just repaying me for several very expensive gifts I gave to you, Bakhtiari. But if you're exchanging expensive gifts with your lineman, he's probably a friend, close friend.

I don't like to think this way because they're teammates and everybody's an equal and everyone's a person. But in reality, he is Aaron Rodgers. So you don't think the friendship for Bakhtiari meant more to him than it did for Rogers and Bakhtiari? I know that sounds terrible, but he's Aaron Rodgers, an NFL legend. Right. And the reason we bring this up is Bakhtiari publicly posted congrats to the loves. Cause he was at Jordan Love's wedding. Yeah, he says, just happy. So, you know, you just we probably should be able to have a relationship where I get invited to your wedding.

I mean, it could be a work relationship. Hey, not everyone gets invited from the office.

But I'm saying there's an intimacy between a center and a quarterback that, you know, I mean, I'm sorry he's a tackle, but yeah, there's a, there's a relationship there where, you know, you're of youf're in the, you're in it together. He's protecting Aaron Rodgers. I don't know. Anyway.

Yeah, but you know what else it's like too? There's that weird feeling of the people that stayed at the job, right. And then you leave and you work with a bunch of different other people. In their mind, they still think of you as, yeah, you used to work with them, but meanwhile you that person was just one of many other people you met along the way. It's hard to explain, but what I'm trying to say is Aaron Rodgers has dealt with a lot of other linemen since that guy.

But we thought they were, we thought they were tight.

And you know what?

I just want to wrap it by saying if you were ever, quote, dissed and not invited somewhere, never take it seriously. Because I'm that person. Really? That Is it that big of a deal? I mean, come on.

I read once that you can, like psychologists say you can only really have about a relationship with about 200 people where you remember their name, remember things about them. You actually, you know, you have a back and forth. And I think that that 200 people, it changes over the years. You Know, you have new people you work with, and maybe they, they take a spot, they, they take up those spots, they go to the wedding. So, yeah, it's, it's hard to remember everybody from your past and make sure everyone's invited. I think it looks. It looks like this. He's just had a small wedding and he couldn't invite everybody.

Exactly. I mean, the reality is something I've thought over the years.

By the way, if you're angry at a friend because of that, let it go. It's lame, you know.

Tim Buyer, let me ask you, if you don't mind me asking, what year did you and your wife get married?

Okay. I wonder, in the last eight years, how different would your wedding guest list look?

Oh, completely different.

My wife and I often talk about how we look at our. We had about 150 people. She's from Texas, I'm from New York. Of those 150, we imagine maybe half of them would still be invited. And there's a slew of new people that clearly would have been invited.

Life changes.

Life changes. And more for some people than others.

I'm also a firm believer, and I think I've said this to you guys on the show, where I just. I think some people are in your lives for just a certain period of time, and the friendship may be 5 years, maybe 10 years. Not everything is a lifelong friendship.

[Danny G]

Reason or a season. Some they say, right?

[H]

Yeah, just moves in and out.

[Spot]

If you guys go back to your early radio careers, you probably have, what, one or two people you'd like to pluck out of that and be like, yeah, he's coming to the wedding. Great friend from 20 years ago. Like, you can't, you know, you have people that come in and out of your life. It's just normal. It's natural, you know, and the best.

[Danny G]

Way to look at it is think of a job you had, not just in radio or TV or broadcasting, whatever you do for a living. Think of your old job. How many people do you talk to from that place? The answer might be one or two. But at the time, you were like, man, Hank in accounting, we go out for beers every Thursday Night Football. And you might not have seen Hank in 15 years. So just remember, it's, it's, you know, guess what?

[Covino]

Hank might still be there. And you had like three or four jobs since.

[Danny G]

Yeah.

I also think, though, that David Bakhtiari knows what flack Aaron Rodgers gets for his relationships, or lack thereof.

[Danny G]

So it's fun to lean in A.

Little in that book. And that's what I don't know. Is it, is it, is it him busting chops or is he truly calling him out? Because in that book that Ian o' Connor wrote last year, you were either in the inner circle or you won't or you weren't. And sometimes without warning, you were dropped. Some people make it back in and some people don't. But he's not like any other player in the NFL that we have that. So him bringing that up I think is pretty interesting because Rogers just is looked at that differently because of his lack of relationships with his family and whatnot.

[Covino]

The articles that I'm reading about it is that it clearly ticked off Bakhtiari. But for all we know, he's busting chops, right? We don't know. So that's the story. Your feedback at Covino and Rich at Fox Sports Radio.

Now, I know Danny gets so irritated by the Roger stuff, but Danny, there is a level of aren't you a little intrigued? Like is he going to really.

Well, there's another story involving an NFL quarterback. That quarterback is Danny G's quarterback, Dan Byers old quarterback, Geno Smith. Geno Smith trending this weekend. Raiders QB got into it, got into a fight at a football game this weekend. He's going back and forth, verbal fight, argument, little verbal tussle, a back and forth with some of the people in the stands and he's quoted as screaming back and forth, that's why I get paid the big bucks. That's why I get paid the big bucks. And video surfaced of this back and forth in the stands and he posted Geno Smith later posted, having fun with the game. I love, man. The need for clicks and negativity takes away from the great event that happened this past weekend. All the kids had fun and competed all around. Great event. This is how we talk in Dade Country. In Dade Country. I'm sorry, you might not understand. Carry on. So he's there coaching these kids and these parents get all wild. And parents are wild. That's why you see those signs. Remember parents, the kids are watching.

[Danny G]

You gotta behave.

[Covino]

Be the adult. But he went on and carried on. But he's saying it's not a big deal.

[Caller]

Competitive. The team he's playing against was called Raw Miami. So, yeah, it was just the environment, I think.

[Covino]

So he was just smack. To me, that was just smack. Talking back and forth. But some of the parents trying to get under his skin. Why not? It's Geno Smith.

[Danny G]

Well, again, this. This falls under the category of we got to know the whole story before you make an assessment. Like, just the initial thing, was Geno Smith flying off the handle? No, he's just sort of having fun with it.

[Covino]

And that's what he says.

[Danny G]

And you know what? I didn't think we'd hear more about this Catal Marte story, but the reality is that we all agreed last week we're like this dirt bag fan talking about his deceased mother. And we were all in agreement, like, what are we doing?

[Covino]

Right, Right.

But we did point out, though, and I'm glad Dan Beyer did, that the Martel could tell news about his mom. That wasn't a story we all knew about.

[Danny G]

Yeah, that wasn't like, public.

[Caller]

That's a big part of this update.

[Danny G]

And from what we understand, and the update is the fan that got banned for life or, you know, whatever, that's a permanent ban. Social media, a ban for the. For who knows how long. We're learning that the thing he screamed was, I texted your mom last night. And you could argue that that is simply nothing more than like a lame yo mama joke. Or like, hey, your mother, it was a.

[Covino]

A bad yo mama joke to the worst person possible.

[Caller]

And then wrong place, wrong.

[Danny G]

And then when the manager got all mad like uf and whatever, his mother died, the fan apparently was remorseful right away. Which means could it, when we look at the whole story, could it be that he just put his foot in his mouth in a major way and be like, oh, your mom not realizing the guy lost his mom?

[Covino]

Does that change the story for you at all?

[Danny G]

It does a little bit.

[Covino]

Should moms always be off limits? I mean, it was just a yo mama joke to the absolute worst person he could have probably picked to say one to. So bad timing. He's made an example of. He's banned for life. Everybody sees a stupid face all over the place. Now that, you know, does the punishment and the amount of attention that the story got, does it match the actual crime?

[H]

I am glad you guys brought this up because this was a bone that I wanted to pick and I do it. I talked about it a little bit yesterday with my Sunday show with Mike Harmon because I said something when you were talking about it. Covino, because I disagreed with you on that day. And I said one of the reasons why I felt so strongly about it was because. Because I don't think that this escapes Martell Marte for just it coming and going like this is going to stick with him. It stuck with him the next day. Then he goes to Arizona. Then there's the standing ovation. And I just bring this up. Do you know that he's 2 for 16 since the incident?

[Covino]

Wow.

[H]

And he struck out for the first time this season. Struck out three times in a game on Friday night. Struck out two more times in the game prior to that on Wednesday. So you don't tell me this hasn't affected him. I believe it did for everything that, like, went down. So excuse me if I feel sorry. I don't feel sorry for the fan. Even though it's, you know, wrong place, wrong time, there. There are consequences to it. And it's obviously had an effect on Cattell Marte, where again, he did homer twice this weekend. Those were his only two hits that he's had since the incident. And it just doesn't seem necessarily like everything is a okay in that sort of world.

[Covino]

It's so tough. You know why? Because we often preach here on the Covino and Rich show. Well, would you do it? So why would we defend some.

[Danny G]

Yeah, I don't like.

[Covino]

I don't like the yo mama jokes all that much, but I do understand how innocent yo mama joke could be. Right? Yo mama's so short, you can see her feet in her license photo. Like, okay, that's funny.

[Danny G]

Your mom is so short, she wore a Malcolm X shirt and a helicopter landed on her.

[Covino]

You say that to someone who just lost their mom or is super sensitive now, you said it to the wrong person. But guess what? Here's the flip side to that. We've all said something out of place or foot and mouth sort of situation where we meant no harm by it. And this guy just did it on the. On the highest of levels possible. Like Spot put his foot in his mouth at our convention recently.

[Danny G]

What happened?

[Covino]

I can't say. But he brought up somebody who was deceased and like, oh, man, I forgot her. I didn't know. You know, that's sort of awkward because it happens sometimes. But this just became a national story. So now that you know what he said? Hey, yo, I texted your mom last night. Which seems kind of harmless. Really Turned out to be not harmless at all.

[Danny G]

He's two for 16 cents the show. I keep telling you that I know you're never gonna watch. Maybe Dan Byerwill because he's a golf fan, but stick with Owen Wilson on Apple tv.

[Covino]

I didn't see how that person would be, you know, infuriated. So. But the other person just didn't know.

But I. I'm so torn on this because like Dan said, and you and I, we. The Kavino and ritual. I'm not sticking up for someone that did some dumb crap I wouldn't do. I would never yell at someone. Yeah. Your mother. So I can't stick up for him. But I do see the corny innocence of a yo mama joke said to an athlete who unfortunately lost his mom in a tragic accident.

We just did a couple of weeks ago things we love about baseball here. No one said your mama jokes. No, I said chatter.

Yes. And there's. And that comes within it. But I just feel that there's consequences. And when you're in a ballpark that's mostly empty, I mean, the White Sox aren't good, you know, so who's dying to go to a White Sox Diamondbacks game? You're sitting that close. Yeah.

By the way, Dan Brown, I'm not trying to be contrarian here, but part of the chatter we had in my high school team was making fun of each other's mom all the time. I'm not even kidding you. We had songs about everybody's mom. But.

But you're not saying you're like, come on, kid, pitching strikes. You know your mama's fat.

Come on.

You're not saying that.

But now that we know what he said, right? Because weren't you. Weren't you expecting like the worst sort of thing now that you hear it, it is a lot more innocent than we thought.

Is the same now it seems like he should have been banned for the season. Not for life or indefinite.

It's considered an indefinite ban. I think that's. Honestly, guys, I think it's a perfect spot for a quote unquote learning experience.

Ask yourself, well, would I do that?

Would you do that? Would I scream out of your mama Joe joke to an MLB ball player? Probably not. I would say definitely not some guy. But, you know, it's definitely a little different than what I thought.

Young player cheated on his girlfriend. You're like, yeah, I would have done that. I was dumb in my twenties too. I accept I do that.

It's always a punk move when you know they're in a position of power or, or a high stakes kind of career or job and they can't really say anything back. That's always a problem.

Yeah, like, you know what it's again, whatever the scenario is, when you see some athlete get behind the wheel when they're drunk, I wouldn't do that. Why would you? You know, like, you're defending people in scenarios. Always ask yourself, would I? Because there are times you where you'd be like, you know, I would. Like, hey, I was out and, you know, out and about. I did something dumb. Like, people do dumb things. But you gotta ask yourself, I use.

The example of rolling through a stop sign. We've all done it. And then you hit somebody on a bike, and there are different consequences, and that's into that same thing. You hit somebody, it's. I mean, yeah, that's where. And that's where, like, it's wrong place, wrong time. But he's not the innocent one here. He's not the victim in all of this.

I think we're all feeling that the indefinite is a little extreme now that we're hearing the story.

Remember at the Olympics, we all thought that boxer was a. A man, but it was like, you know, she was a biological woman. And everyone. We got it wrong.
