Rich Davis
You know, I told my kids, like, dad's going to the All Star Game. And I don't know why it did because they're starting to get to the age where they said, I want to go. And I'm like, you know, when you're a little older and I'm thinking, like, what, 10, 11, 12? Like, what's the ultimate age where you feel like you were into baseball cards, Little League?
Steve Covino
11 and 12. Like 11, 12, 13 was the wheelhouse. And then when you got into chicks, when you got into women, then it sort of took a. Baseball cards took a backseat.
Rich Davis
Yeah, of course.
Steve Covino
Yeah. Not actual baseball. We still love baseball. We'll talk a little baseball. We have lots to get to. Every Thursday, old school when 50 hits, we throw it back. When 50 hits on the clock get a little old school, we will talk about, let's just say the interwebs, the Internet. Stick around for that. Plus game shows and more uncomfortable moments in sports. Yes, uncomfortable moments. We'll get to that. But I have a question and I need the help of the Fox Sports radio nation. Danny G's on the phone. Danny, happy Thursday. Hell yeah. 87799 on Fox, Iowa. Sam on the ones and twos. What up, Sam? Hi. Hi. I am Sam. And of course we got DB the consummate professional on the updates. Hanging out with us. Always, Always a pleasure. And Spotty's on the videos at Covino and Rich.
Rich Davis
You have a hard hitting question.
Steve Covino
Well, it's not really that.
Rich Davis
Is it as hard hitting as mine?
Steve Covino
But actually, Dan Beyer might be a big help with my question.
Rich Davis
Oh, I was gonna say on a. On a hot summer day like today.
Steve Covino
Yeah.
Rich Davis
If I gave you the option, are you going Mr. Softy Carvel soft serve, or are you going like Baskin Cold stone Ben and Jerry's like hard ice cream.
Dan Beyer
Oh, I voted in this poll. You put on social media.
Rich Davis
My wife and I argue about this because I'm like, who wouldn't choose like a soft serve cone? And she's like, baskin or what? I'm like, get out of here.
Steve Covino
So the question is soft serve or hard scoop? Is that really the question?
Rich Davis
Yeah, that was. That was easy.
Steve Covino
For real? Yeah. I'm going. I mean, I like both, obviously.
Rich Davis
What? Do you know the third option? What are you gonna get, like a bubble O bill or a fat frog from the ice cream man?
Steve Covino
Some Rita's Italian ice, bro.
Iowa Sam
Oh, well, yeah, well, like sherbet or sorbet or something?
Steve Covino
Mom says sherbet.
Dan Beyer
I'd say a Snickers ice cream bar.
Spotty
Ooh.
Steve Covino
I'm going fat frog dude.
Rich Davis
I think it's a weak ass ice cream man if he doesn't have soft serve because he's really just a car with a freezer in the thin.
Steve Covino
Now you're really just convoluted question. Soft serve or hard scoop?
Rich Davis
Let's move on to your scoop.
Steve Covino
I'm going Dairy Queen soft serve.
Rich Davis
I'm going Tom Carvel.
Iowa Sam
What about dipped in chocolate? They had the crunchy chocolate dip.
Rich Davis
How about a red Merlin shell? Do you know what the red Merlin is?
Steve Covino
Sounds like one of your old sex moves.
Rich Davis
Yeah, I gave this girl in college the old red Merlin.
Steve Covino
No, it's actually when they dip it in the cherry. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. So think about that and hit us up. But I have another important question, Rich.
Rich Davis
I'm sorry.
Steve Covino
Mine was because I'm at a crossroads in life. Got a birthday coming up yet? I'm still feeling young and spry, but I am at that stage of life of, well, what's next? Right? I'm hitting the gym every day. I'm always on the treadmill. I try to watch what I eat, try to bring my best.
Rich Davis
Well, you know what you're feeling? You're feeling probably what every, honestly, star athlete feels in their late 30s, early 40s, where they're like, I used to be so dominant. What's happening to me?
Steve Covino
I don't want to be fat. Like Patrick Mahomes, apparently. Even though we defended him yesterday, we said he's not fat. And by the way, if he is fat, what are the linemen? What are they? If Mahomes is fat, what about the other guys? So I'm at that crossroads of life, the coming of age where, I mean, you don't want to get hurt, right? Like, if you're playing a pickup game of basketball, you're sort of just shooting, right? You're not really driving the ball the way you used to because you're sort of tiptoeing around. Like, I want to play, but I don't want to, like, go all out like these idiots. I'm not trying to get hurt.
Rich Davis
You're at the crossroads. But cue the Bone Thugs in Harmony.
Steve Covino
Crossroads. Now, the crossroad is this. I don't play softball. Never really liked it. I shoot around when I can. You want to stay active and golf's not you thing. Well, that's what I'm saying. I feel golf maybe calling my name a little bit because you want to socialize, you want to hang out with your buds, you want to have big time business meetings, right? There's so much. You want to be outdoors, you want to get away from the wife. There's so many benefits. You might. You may drink that. What's it called? Trans. The drink Trans.
Rich Davis
What's the drink called now it's now it's Trans.
Steve Covino
The drinks. Even the drinks Trans now.
Rich Davis
No, it's a tranquil.
Steve Covino
No, the golf drink.
Rich Davis
Someone said, you know what I'm talking about. Juice and vodka and something.
Danny G
No, I have no idea what you're talking.
Steve Covino
There's a golf drink. There's a golf drink. Someone interested in brought to my attention. Our buddy Brandon told us about it. And then my girlfriend confirmed, like, yeah, it's a super popular drink. She Works at a golf course.
Danny G
I don't. I don't drink alcohol. So if it's an alcoholic drink, I probably wouldn't know it.
Steve Covino
So there's all these reasons that I want to maybe sniff a golf course.
Rich Davis
You talk about the classic transfusion.
Steve Covino
The transfusion, which is.
Rich Davis
Which is vodka.
Danny G
How did you not get transfusion? Were you thinking trans am?
Steve Covino
I don't know what he was thinking. Transcontinental.
Rich Davis
For the record, it's. It's vodka ginger ale with some grape juice. And that apparently is the. The hot. That's good.
Iowa Sam
Ginger ale and grape juice.
Steve Covino
You know what, Sam? I didn't buy into the hype either. I was like, yeah, I don't know about that.
Iowa Sam
Ginger ale usually mixed with whiskey, but.
Steve Covino
Apparently it's like the number one golf course cocktail.
Rich Davis
I was gonna say ginger ale. The number one answer of beverages. I only drink on a plane for some reason.
Iowa Sam
Or when you're sick, maybe.
Steve Covino
But I also realized that golf is extremely frustrating. Right? That's the downside. So there's pros and cons, and there's also the feeling of. I don't know, I feel like that's an old guy thing. Am I at that stage of life? So I'm not.
Rich Davis
Look at all the. Your star athletes play golf.
Steve Covino
I get it. I'm just telling you where my mind goes a little bit, right? So I'm like, I could still hit a three point shot. Am I ready for the golf course? Then I saw something else today. Danny G. Sent this to us and it's gone kind of viral. There was a post on social media from. And by the way, I just love the name. So I got to say it. I wasn't going to give the guy any credit, but I love the name Matt Van Swole. Matt Van Swole. Wow.
Rich Davis
You got to live up to that name.
Steve Covino
I know.
Dan Beyer
I've been following him for years.
Steve Covino
Matt Van Swole. Is he not like a workout guy?
Rich Davis
I mean, he can't be a twerp if you have that name.
Steve Covino
He posted this breaking sort of developing viral story where extremely rare footage has emerged of two Amish couples playing pickleball in a barn in Pennsylvania. So pickleball exploding so hard that it's trinkling into the Amish community. Pickleball is reportedly exploding in popularity amongst the Amish. And it also gets me thinking of, well, maybe that's the avenue. So my question is, when you're at that stage of life where everyone's talking about golf and their golf weekend and their outing and they went traveling. They were golfing and golf. But you're also hearing on the other side, man, I was in this pickleball tournament. I go out, me and my wife, and pickleball and pick. If you had a choice to make right now, if you're at that crossroads, like me, Bone Thugs in Harmony and Britney Spears and Ralph Macci. You ever see the Ralph Macchio Cars.
Rich Davis
Movie, by the way? All great references.
Steve Covino
Yeah. If you're at the crossroads, hanging out with us, and you were to guide little Stevie here, where would you tell me to lean? As my next venture?
Rich Davis
I would tell you to lean like a trello.
Steve Covino
All right. But no, no, obviously you could do. But, hey, why not both? That's always the answer. But if I was gonna dive into one based on the exploding popularity where the Amish are competing. Do you do that pickleball or golf?
Rich Davis
I know you for a long time. I feel like golf is a planned activity. It's a commitment activity. And you're a guy that doesn't. Kavina's the type of guy that.
Steve Covino
That's very.
Rich Davis
Doesn't like to make a barber appointment, like, a week in advance. You got to get tee times. You got to get a. Force them together.
Dan Beyer
Not if he just goes to the golf range, though.
Rich Davis
Yeah, but that's not golfing. That's just playing atomic golf or top golf.
Dan Beyer
Do you want to do that part of the hobby?
Steve Covino
I figure that's. I realized how bad I was at that recently in Vegas. I was like, man, I really got to drive.
Iowa Sam
My game just called driving, Dan.
Steve Covino
Yes.
Iowa Sam
When you're just hitting golf balls, I.
Steve Covino
Want to start driving, go to the range, and, you know, get better at that as we grow and these become the hobbies that we lean into. Dan Buyer. I sort of got a feeling of what you would say. Dan Beyer wears golf gear to work. You love it.
Danny G
Well, I do. And a lot of times I'll. After work, I'll just go straight to the course and then, you know, hit some balls on the range and then go home, because it's on my way home. So that's.
Steve Covino
Yeah, I feel you. Yeah, Like, I'm. I'm primed and ready to go to the gym right after work here. Dan Byers, a big golf guy. So I imagine you'd be like, dude, get some clubs. Get involved. And there's so many pros to being a golf guy, because you could do that for so long.
Rich Davis
I'll even.
Danny G
Go ahead, Rich.
Rich Davis
You ever see Dan Byers Chichi Rodriguez moves where He.
Steve Covino
Yeah, he's got some timely reference.
Danny G
Yes.
Rich Davis
They would always show him on warnerwolf's Plays of the Year because he would always do fun little celebrations.
Danny G
Yes, he's only been dead for a little while, but, hey, it's all good, you know, but not for a long time, you know.
Rich Davis
Sorry I interrupted you for Chi Chi.
Danny G
R. No, but I was just going to say this, guys. You know, I'm not the biggest baseball fan. Played when I was. I was younger. I, you know, like the game, and not as much as you guys, but. But I bought a glove as an adult. You know why? Because I need a glove as an adult. My kid. I bought it before I had our son because I just. You need a glove, like. And I didn't have my glove from when I, you know, was a teenager, so I bought a glove, and I feel like you need to do the same with golf clubs. You may not choose.
Steve Covino
That's like pulling the band aid, like, just pulling the trigger by.
Danny G
Just have them. Yeah, just have them in case it, you know, like, I'm not telling you to pick pickleball or to pick golf or to pick disc golf or what you want to do, but you should just have a set that you can use. And as you get older, if there's more opportunities, then you have them there to use. And not like, hey, can I borrow a set of clubs? You know?
Steve Covino
But it's like making that commitment, right? Step one. Yes, step one. Like, I invested in this already. Maybe I get into it because there are so many benefits to having. Being able to carry your own, I guess, hold your own on the golf course. But again, you got to see this picture. Pickleball is exploding so much, guys, that this is also giving other people a sense of fomo, the fear of missing out because there's so many people talking about it. The Amish are apparently clearing out barns. This photo is kind of wild, actually.
Rich Davis
I thought it was the Photoshop at first, and I'm still not convinced.
Steve Covino
You know what? For all we know, it is they.
Dan Beyer
Have a little video of it. I just took a still shot.
Steve Covino
Oh, you saw the video. Okay. I saw the still.
Dan Beyer
I could send that to you guys.
Steve Covino
And they clear out these.
Rich Davis
I saw that. If you scroll, if you really zoom in, you see Jebediah's agenda. It's churn butter, make some horseshoes, and play pickleball.
Steve Covino
Oh, wow. But they clear out this really. This really nice barn. It looks like the roof of a barn, actually. Right. And they have these little Amish tournaments And the picture that's gone viral, according to Matt Van Swell, is actually really cool. So in an ever changing world of what's hot and what's next, and you're about to make those moves, what would you do? What would you suggest? What are you going to do? Because guess what, you're not going to be able to play intramural whatever it is that you do for activities forever.
Danny G
What's interesting as well is that there's video, but there's Amish, don't necessarily like to be photographed.
Steve Covino
Yeah. Who took this video?
Rich Davis
This is very intrusive.
Danny G
It is.
Steve Covino
It.
Danny G
Is it that? Yeah.
Dan Beyer
Somebody sent a drone onto their property.
Danny G
But for some reason they're going to.
Rich Davis
Make a movie like Kingpin.
Danny G
Yeah. Like. Yeah, one of my favorites. It's locked up in a high bird's eye view of this, of this showdown. I just saw the video that Danny was talking about.
Steve Covino
Well, Rich, what are you going to do? I mean, I know you think you're going to be the softball king of the valley forever.
Rich Davis
Play softball until I'm old. There's guys that are like 60, 70 something years old. I got 30 years to be those guys. But golf, I lean more towards because I, while I do have a little bit of a baseball swing, is there more drive the ball.
Steve Covino
But there is. There are more legitimacy to it than pick. Like just the e. The. The. The title of the game bothers me too, to be honest.
Rich Davis
Pickleball. What does that.
Steve Covino
What does that even mean?
Rich Davis
But you're a guy that cares about names. You wouldn't watch Handmaid's Tale because you said the name sounded corny.
Steve Covino
Well, and I'm right. Yeah. That doesn't.
Rich Davis
Intriguing, award winning show.
Steve Covino
Like, I don't feel like Steve Covino, pickleball player. Like, that just sounds lame to me. I don't know.
Rich Davis
Well, I think, you know, I hate to be the guy that says, why not both, but give both a shot. And you know what it is? I'll give you this. If I were telling you, choose between two women or two jobs, don't you sort of want to try them out first before you make a decision?
Steve Covino
I mean, that's great advice.
Rich Davis
I mean, if you were on the Bachelor, when you take them both to the fantasy suite and give it a spin.
Steve Covino
But I'm only picking one.
Rich Davis
But go. Yeah. You know, go do a round of golf. Maybe a Saturday, if Dan Byer could escape. We go do maybe even nine holes. Right? Just do something. And then you and I go play pickleball. And Maybe one of them, you're like, bro, I'm addicted. And the other one, you're like, yeah, boring.
Steve Covino
You know, Sam and Danny G. Where does your interest lean?
Dan Beyer
I'm actually leaning golf. My cousin, who's a couple years older than me, and I grew up with him, almost like he's my brother. We're that close. So he just started playing golf and DB in his backyard. He set up one of those. It's not a simulator, but you hit the balls into it. Not sure what that's called.
Steve Covino
Okay.
Danny G
Yeah, just some people put up nets. Yeah. Yeah.
Dan Beyer
So he bought this fancy thing that he's working on his swing, and it's weird to see him into golf because that's a sport he used to make fun of, but it's got me interested in joining him on a golf course, even to play nine. Like Rich said.
Steve Covino
How about you, Sam?
Iowa Sam
I like to be outdoors, so I'd probably say golf. I would just say it's more of an investment financially.
Danny G
Obviously, if you're going to buy.
Steve Covino
As our show grows, maybe it's, you know, we have little golf outings together. Pickleballs.
Iowa Sam
Just need the racket and some shoes and the court and some friends I liked. I like the walking. I like the golf courses.
Danny G
They're beautiful.
Rich Davis
And I'm watching Stick on Apple TV with Owen Wilson.
Steve Covino
Wow.
Rich Davis
And honestly, just from watching that, I'm like, wow, you know what? Like, I don't know. Just. There's something about golf where I feel like that's where I'm headed. And. And by the way, just like when you had a kid, I had no.
Steve Covino
Idea that show was about golf.
Rich Davis
Just like when you and your ex had your daughter and you felt like you were a young dad. And I'm like, dude, you're 30. You're not a young dad.
Steve Covino
I was 33.
Rich Davis
You make it sound like. Like you're too young to golf. Like, LeBron James is golfing. Like, people that are, you know, young.
Steve Covino
Young athletes and actors, you know, seeing dudes in checkered pants play golf. I know. It's different now.
Rich Davis
It's changed. I think, you know, Happy Gilmore should.
Iowa Sam
Have shattered all those stereotypes.
Steve Covino
Oh, yes.
Iowa Sam
You got a guy in a Boston Bruins jersey come in and just completely change the game.
Steve Covino
But to wrap it up, some of us at the crossroads.
Rich Davis
Don't you want to throw a guy at a lake? Don't you want to tussle on the golf course? Like the viral video, there was a.
Steve Covino
Big fight at a Canadian golf course. This. That's gone Viral. And this NHL goon tossed his drunken buffoon into a swamp, into a lake or whatever. It's a great fight video. So, yeah, it gets crazy. It's a lot of fun. But to wrap it up, based on the Amish barn story, this. This top secret footage that surfaced, I'm not sure. I could think of many things that have exploded what seems to be overnight the way pickleball has, you could say in our lifetime, ultimate fighting really took off. But pickleball, you got professional athletes buying into teams, you got all these leagues and tournaments. It is pretty wild to see that it has infiltrated not only the mainstream, but the Amish community.
Rich Davis
No doubt. I think both are great options. I really do think. I'm not trying to make a crude analogy, but when you are dating, when you're going for job interviews, you want to try things, right? So I think why don't you make this the summer of. The summer of Steve Covino's new adventures. Pickleball, golf. Hey, used to bowl when you're a kid, see if you still got the love for bowling.
Steve Covino
Honestly, that would be my number one preference.
Iowa Sam
Yeah, Bowling's blast.
Steve Covino
Be the next bowling for life, baby. Next Pete Weber. Yeah. All right. Well, anyway, you guys have any thoughts or ideas, let me know. At Covino and Rich. At Steve Covkovino. And the number, of course, is 87799 on Fox. I'm sure a lot of your weekends are taken up by either your kids, sports, or this stuff.
Rich Davis
I gotta ask one crucial question, not just to you, but in general. There's a sentiment of, do you want to bond with your wife or girlfriend or do you need time away from her? Because I feel like I see a lot of couples with the pickleball. With the pickleball.
Steve Covino
When I was.
Rich Davis
When I was spending a lot of time in Austin, when we were remodeling our house here, I lived in Austin for like six months. There's a gym with a huge pickleball facility that I was going to every day, and I'd see all these middle age and older couples doing doubles. And I feel like that's a bonding thing. Golf. I feel like a lot of times there's. There's definitely women into golf, but I feel bonding. But I feel like it's more like.
Steve Covino
You want to bond with Paige Spiranac.
Rich Davis
Yeah, I feel like there's just a lot of guys that are dipping away and their wives are bitching that they're gone six hours, you know, so pickleball, golf, you be the Decider. And a note for Dan Byer and anyone else eyeing up sporting equipment for their kids. This is not an ad because I did my own little research. I just bought my kid a Mizuno Power Clothes glove. It was only like 40 to 50 bucks because some gloves are very expensive, but my kid is five, gonna be six. And it's nice leather, but it's already broken in. And some of them are either really nice leather that you have to do so much breaking in, or they're those, like, plasticky crappy material. The Mizuno Power Close is the nicest kids glove I've seen. So take that with what you will look for it.
Steve Covino
And we have a lot more to get to. I do want to make fun of Juan Soto. If we have time, make fun of.
Rich Davis
Him next because I'm ready to fight you on this. And by the way, during the break, can you turn the Mets game on One of the TVs? Mets, Orioles, game two of a doubleheader. If they win today, game two, I'll be happy. I know they dropped game one, right.
Danny G
DB already up to nothing in the.
Steve Covino
First, so look at that.
Rich Davis
Thank you for letting me miss that, Sam, by not being.
Steve Covino
I'm. I have to say most things that Juan Soto does. Most things that Rich does bother me.
Danny G
Will Sam say to Rich, I'm not the only one that knows how to use a remote like he did to me yesterday. Will you say that to Rich Davis?
Steve Covino
I don't know that side of Sam where he gets all snippy like that Sam, I hope I never get to that point, you know?
Iowa Sam
I mean, you know.
Steve Covino
Well, Juan Soto bothers me the same way Sam bothers Dan. Juan Soto said something that just rubbed me the wrong way. Am I a bitter Yankees fan? Yes, I am. I admit it. But I just don't like this guy's attitude. His priority parties are off, and I'll explain why.
Rich Davis
All right, we got more Kavino and Rich hanging out Thursday on Fox Sports Radio.
Steve Covino
Kavino's at the crossroads.
Rich Davis
This Guy's in his 40s, and he's like, do I golf? Do I play pickleball?
Steve Covino
Crossroad. Crossroads.
Rich Davis
Crossroads.
Steve Covino
Cavino and Rich at the crossroad of life.
Rich Davis
Yeah, Pete Alonzo. Sorry.
Steve Covino
We'll meet you there.
Rich Davis
Sorry. O's had the bases loaded, two outs, line drive to first base. My dude, the polar bear stabbed it. Two, nothing Mets.
Steve Covino
Do you think the polar bear cares about you?
Rich Davis
You know what I'm hoping for? I'm going to my first Mets game at Citi. Field with my kids. We're going to take a couple days in New York. I got second row behind the Mets dugout, hoping my kids because they love Pete Alonzo. If he gives them a little wave or something, it'll make their day. If he doesn't, I may hate on him.
Steve Covino
Why you think out of 55,000 big.
Rich Davis
Heads gonna second row if he's got his little Pete Alonzo shirt on? Like Pete Polar Bear Pete. Like, if he gives my son a little like a.
Steve Covino
Wear a noggin boss or something, wear something that stands out.
Rich Davis
A big ass hat.
Steve Covino
Because that's the only hat that fits. Rich. Anyway, so I'm Cavino, that is Rich. Pressure's on Pete Alonzo, the biggest head in the land.
Dan Beyer
You're gonna have to instruct your kids exactly what to yell. Rich. To get his attention. You're lucky the Mets gave you some money.
Steve Covino
Yeah, yeah. What do they have to say to get his attention?
Rich Davis
I don't know.
Steve Covino
Danny G's on the phones at 877-9 on Fox. Covino and Rich, Sam is here. DB's got your update in about nine minutes. But before we make fun of Juan Soto and before we do old school and 50 hits, let's just take this quick phone call. The crossroad I'm at is, do you do golf or pickleball? With pickleball exploding? And you're still very active. I know there's a lot of injuries involved. Old people busting hips left and right, playing pickleball. Do you make that choice? If you had a choice to make right now at the crossroad, would it be golf or pickleball? For what? To invest in next in life.
Rich Davis
Calvin in Mesa, Arizona. What's up, Calvin?
Spotty
Not much. Good. Good afternoon, guys.
Rich Davis
Calvin, this is an interesting point Cavino brings up. And I say that because if you're roughly 40, you are starting to see random friends like our buddy Nico in Arizona.
Steve Covino
Yeah, he's like Mr.
Rich Davis
Golf all of a sudden, like twice a week he's on the golf course. It's, it's. You know, I feel like you have kids, you need a little getaway once in a while. Calvin, are you going golf or pickleball?
Spotty
Pickleball. Now, I've played both, and they both have their advantages and disadvantages. But pickleball is such a social game. If you need that extra social area in your life and where a golf, you know, you don't get that quite as much. You have your foursome, but you're not talking on the course or sitting around talking while you're waiting on the next game.
Rich Davis
Yeah, that makes sense.
Steve Covino
Oh, hold on now. That's a great point.
Rich Davis
What if. What if you and I became a pickleball duo and no one could beat us?
Steve Covino
That'd be great, right?
Rich Davis
Doubles.
Steve Covino
We're doubles champs in the valley. All valley doubles champs. Pickleball. Covino and Rich.
Rich Davis
I mean, Dan Patrick's on the Family Feud tonight. What if Kavino and Rich on the pickleball circuit.
Steve Covino
And by the way, if you just joined us, there's a viral photo and video of Amish people. They're saying it's exploding. The sport's so big. There's photos. I don't know how, but there's photos and video of Amish people clearing out barns just to participate in their own pickleball tournaments. So thank you guys for all your feedback and all your help and suggestions at Covino, Rich at Fox Sports Radio. But I do want to play this clip that rubbed me the wrong way.
Rich Davis
Really made my Johnny Gill.
Steve Covino
No, Johnny Gill rubbed me the right way.
Rich Davis
Oh, that's right.
Steve Covino
Juan Soto rubs me the wrong way. Now what rubbed me the wrong way the most is, well, the decision he made, because I don't believe it, was to play for the Mets. It was all about the bag, as they say. It was all about the money. 5 million more to play for the Mets. Meanwhile, he just made a World Series run with the Yankees. Yeah, 5 million more and the Yankees want an extra year.
Rich Davis
There are things that I'm going to agree and disagree with you on. But before you even proceed, he didn't have to leave the market he was in. He went across town. The Mets are known to be more family friendly. You could say it's all about the bag. But the Mets and Yankees, the records will show you now, they're very similar as far as potential.
Steve Covino
But the Yankees kissed his ass for an entire year. Both Aaron Judge bringing him breakfast. They did everything they could to kiss his ass.
Rich Davis
They were stars.
Steve Covino
They had a World Series run. They had unfinished business.
Rich Davis
But the Mets had a World Series run.
Steve Covino
They did not. They were not in the World Series.
Rich Davis
Sorry. They played the Dodgers better than the Yankees did. So you could say the Mets are better than the Yankees.
Steve Covino
You could say it all you want. He left for the money, dude. It was the money. And that's what bothered me. It wasn't like, you know, a quality of life decision. It was for the money. He left for the Mets. I hated that about him and showed me where his priorities were. I get it's a business. But how much money do you need? The Yankees offered him $760 million or whatever. So he doesn't make the All Star team. We're going to be out there. We made it. As we approach All Star break and you know, do I think it's a snub? I do, Rich, because he did turn it on. He was the player of the much.
Rich Davis
He was the player of the National.
Steve Covino
League for the month of June, much to my dismay. There's no question the guy has caught up to where he should be, right? Some of the biggest snubs this year, according to our guy, Ben Verlander and other MLB experts, Juan Soto's top of the list. Then you got George Springer with the Blue Jays and Suzuki with the Cubs. But Juan Soto was snubbed and he was asked about it. And before we play the clip, just please pay attention to where his priorities are. Again. Why are you upset, Juan Soto, that you were snubbed for the All Star team? Would you have liked to make the All Star team?
Spotty
What do you think?
Rich Davis
I don't know.
Steve Covino
Some people want to take the question. I mean, I think it's a. It's a lot of money on the table. If I make it. Boo. Again, about the money.
Rich Davis
What about the honor and the accolade? With a smile on his face doesn't.
Steve Covino
Mean he was joking, dude. Rich thinks that this is a big joke. Like, haha, Juan Soto, why don't you open up for Cedric the Entertainer? He's not a comedian. He's not the king of comedy. It's not him. He's not replacing Bernie Mac, dude. He's not the guy, okay? He stinks. His whole mindset immediately wasn't like, oh, yeah, it would have been great to be out there with the best in the game. You know, I turned it up this season. I think I deserve it. You know, it hurts my feelings. I want to go to Atlanta, represent. He's like, no, the money.
Rich Davis
And you know what the money is?
Steve Covino
This bozo with his bozo haircut. It's $100,000 bonus, which is a lot to me and you and everybody else, but when you're making 765 million, what's enough for this guy? He gets certain bonuses for making the team. And I looked it up as part of his contract. $100,000 if he made the All Star team. That's his answer. That's his mindset. This guy's garbage, dude. He's a great ballplayer. His priorities are cheeks.
Rich Davis
I like, like Cal Raleigh cheeks, deflated cheeks.
Steve Covino
Cal, Raleigh has nice rumpus cheeks.
Rich Davis
So I can't, as a Mets fan, defend.
Steve Covino
You're saying he's joking?
Rich Davis
I can't defend the weakest answer that he gave. But what I can defend is he said it in jest. For all we know, his comedic timing is bad. He didn't say it serious. He laughed. The reporters laughed. He was smiling ear to ear the whole time. Like, yeah, that's a lot of money left on the table. It's funny. Maybe the joke is, or the guy.
Steve Covino
Just sees dollar signs with everything he does. I get it's a business. Listen, but does it not mean anything.
Rich Davis
To you jabronis like you and Yankee fans? Who.
Steve Covino
Who's the Jabroni here, me or Soto?
Rich Davis
Bro, you and all Yankee fans that are just butthurt that you got dumped for the first time in a long time. You love to paint this picture that Juan Soto is this terrible guy in the clubhouse. His teammates will say he's fantastic. His teammates will say that he gathers the guys together and he's a team guy. Everything about Juan Soto is great. Except what? He gives an answer that you don't find funny and he dished you.
Steve Covino
It's not funny.
Rich Davis
It's like a girl left you and you're like, yeah, she's ugly now. Dude, it's Juan Soto. Get over it.
Steve Covino
You start to realize, you know all along that you were blinded and she's got terrible attributes. He's got terrible qualities. It's the truth. You see it? Yes, you're right. I see it now. I loved him last year. He was hitting home runs for the Yankees. Now I'm seeing all these negative qualities.
Rich Davis
Please. You had movement in your pants. When he would do the Soto shuffle.
Steve Covino
Last year, his first default response was the hundred thousand dollars that he's missing out on. How about, man, it would have been a great honor to be an all Star for the Mets.
Rich Davis
Well, I can't defend the bunk answer, but, hey, your thoughts?
Iowa Sam
I like how Covino used the word rumpus to describe, like, a fuller rump, when in fact it means just like, chaos, right?
Steve Covino
No, no, no.
Rich Davis
He's got a rumpus.
Steve Covino
Rumpus.
Iowa Sam
It's a bigger rump.
Steve Covino
It' multiple meanings.
Rich Davis
Sam, it's fine. I loved it. Yeah, it was flexible.
Steve Covino
I always say, let the wild rumpus start. There you go. I'm not talking about ass.
Rich Davis
When I say that is rumpus and dumpus. Well, anyway. Hey, your thoughts on Juan Soto? Your thoughts on pickleball or golf? We're Going to get to a bunch. We got NFL on the agenda. It's Thursday, so we're going to go old school in a little bit, Talk some old school, Internet and all. That's coming up. We're going to have a fun one today, but let's go to our pal Dan Beyer. He'll keep you in the loop. What's going on, DB Yeah, your Mets.
Danny G
Right now still up in the Orioles 2 nothing in game two of their double header playing youg mean with that bum Juan Soto? That bum Juan Soto. All about the money he is. Earlier today the Orioles beat Rich's Mets by a score of 3 to 1. The Cubs dropped the Twins 8 to 1 today as Pete Crow Armstrong hit two home runs numbers 24 and 25 on the season. Reds lead the Marlins 1 nothing in the second inning as they play in Cincinnati. Jalen Williams got paid by the Oklahoma City Thunder. The guard gets a five year max extension worth $287 million. According to ESPN that says the Thunder could pay out as much to as $822 million in the three contracts that they gave to Shea Gilgis, Alexander, Chet Holmgren and Williams. Amanda Man, Anna Samova. I get it right? Yes. Anisimova topped arena Sabalenka today at Wimbledon in the ladies semifinals in three sets. She's onto her first ever Grand Slam final. Good job for the 13 seated American. She'll have to face eight seated Iga Swiatek who's making her first Wimbledon final appearance. She's a five time Grand Slam winner. A petition has now evolved asking for the ouster of NFL Penn executive director Lloyd Howell. Earlier today an ESPN report showed Howell is a consultant for a private equity firm that can purchase minority ownership in the NFL teams. Sepp Straka, Jake Knapp and others share the first round lead at the Scottish Open at six under par. Scotty Shelfer three back, Rory McElroy four shots back and Cooper flag and the Mavericks face Bronny James and the Lakers tonight in summer league play. Guys, back to you.
Rich Davis
Thank you, DB Can I enter you in a contest? I feel like you're great at this blindly. Sportscasters who blindly have to pronounce tennis and UFC fighter names.
Danny G
UFC is tough. I'll tell you.
Rich Davis
There are times you could watch soccer names, you could be watching UFC and the broadcasters announcer and throughout the whole card people are saying the person's name five different ways.
Steve Covino
We should challenge Dan Beyer one day. Give him a bunch of hockey names and UFC names.
Rich Davis
The one we were at A fight. Is it Bivol? Bivel. Bivel.
Steve Covino
Like, because so many people.
Danny G
The Anisimova is tricky because I kept on saying Animasova, so I had the M and the S switched around, but it's Anisimova.
Rich Davis
It's like when people do the Wembanyama. Wenbam Yama.
Danny G
Yes.
Rich Davis
Sometimes it's tricky. Wembayama.
Danny G
They don't say the you play well enough, it becomes a household name.
Rich Davis
Yeah. So it's true. You ain't kidding. Thank you. Khabib.
Iowa Sam
Nurmagomedov.
Steve Covino
You know? Yeah. I can't even say that. He's just Khabib dude.
Rich Davis
That's why some people just say Giannis. It's the same reason people say Khabib. How do you say Khabib's last name?
Iowa Sam
Khabib. Not my own head.
Steve Covino
Right.
Iowa Sam
Nurmagomedov.
Rich Davis
I got it.
Iowa Sam
Right, Khabib. Nuragamedov.
Rich Davis
Yeah, I got it. Let me give you guys a quick trivia question, then we're getting into old school. When 50 hits, we'll take some phone calls. My buddy Rob down in San Antonio hit me up. He goes, he knows we're big baseball fans. He goes, you and Cavino, probably big Gary Sheffield fans.
Steve Covino
I go, yeah, love it.
Rich Davis
He goes, chef hit his 500th home run as a Met. I go, believe it or not, oddly enough, I was at that game. He goes, there are three players since Sheffield that have entered the 500 home round club. Who are those three players? Since Sheffield did it, three guys have joined.
Steve Covino
Only three?
Rich Davis
Yep. Sheffield and 09. So Sheffield did it in 09.
Steve Covino
Yeah.
Rich Davis
Cabrera, you got one of them miggy pools, number two. Yeah, you guys are good. Two out of the three so far. One more. One more. Since Sheffield hit.500, which, by the way, that just shows you in the last 15 years, only two guys have added to the 500. Three guys have been added. Pujols, Miguel, Cabrera. I'll give you some of my guesses that were wrong. I said, Tomei. He goes, no, that was 07. I go, Frank Thomas. He goes, 07 as well. I go, a rod. He goes, 07. Two. The answer.
Steve Covino
Hold on.
Rich Davis
Come on.
Steve Covino
You got big poppies. Yes, big poppies, I would say. I don't think he had 500, but he did. Nice.
Rich Davis
Look at you guys. Smarty pants.
Steve Covino
All right.
Rich Davis
Hey, you know, I got another trivia that I'll give you later on. How about that? We got more Covino and Rich next right here on Fox Sports Radio. Hang tight.
Steve Covino
Side Note, we're all big Weird Al fans here in the studio. In fact, we've had him on our show a few times, and he's a big fan. You know, we have a parody band with over a hundred songs. We can't play the songs on Fox Sports Radio, but if you search hard for Tickle Sack, I saw them live in.
Dan Beyer
In Vegas.
Steve Covino
Yeah, Tickle Sack.
Dan Beyer
I was gonna call it a concert. It wasn't really a concert, but it was performance.
Steve Covino
We went aluminum in Canada.
Rich Davis
I believe so.
Steve Covino
Yeah. Yeah, Tickle Sack. Look it up, guys. Cavino and Rich. And we play Amish paradise because apparently pickleball is all the rage. They cleared out the viral thing is. And Sam cleared this up for us. They cleared out a hayloft. A beautiful, detailed hay loft.
Dan Beyer
Yeah, please don't call it a barn.
Steve Covino
It's not a barn.
Rich Davis
It's part of the barn.
Steve Covino
And they have tournaments there, and there's top secret footage of it. And we were talking about, hey, because it's exploding so much, do you get into pickleball or golf? If you have the choice. And then we started talking about Juan Soto. So we got all kinds of phone calls at 877-99-FOX.
Rich Davis
You want to say hi to a couple of people, then we'll move along or what? Let's say hi to Ryan in Montana. Ryan, what's up, buddy?
Spotty
I just wanted to talk about golf.
Rich Davis
Yeah.
Spotty
Versus pickleball.
Rich Davis
What you got?
Spotty
I mean, it took golf five centuries to become popular.
Rich Davis
Yes.
Spotty
Pickleball's got a long ways to go.
Rich Davis
Yeah, but it is blowing up, dude. I mean, I get what you're saying.
Steve Covino
But it's major leagues, man.
Rich Davis
Fish and Pa. What's up, Fish?
Steve Covino
Hey, Fish.
Spotty
What's up, guys? Definitely golf scramble with friends. There's strategy, there's beer. There's everything.
Steve Covino
You know, this was a useful conversation because of the social aspects. I don't really like to socialize that much, so I'd like to go and hang with my buddies at a golf course. And it just seems there's something a little more. More legitimate to it, you know, to me. Yeah, go ahead on, Soto, man. What's up?
Spotty
But it's a competition, so. Okay, that makes it fun. And Soto, I just asked Dan Byer, Kirk Cousins, he went on a rant. Is the Juan Soto of football only less talented? He's done the best to get the biggest bag possible for his ability.
Rich Davis
Oh, is he the. Is he the Kirk Cousins buyer?
Danny G
Hey, guys. I did go off on Kirk Cousins, but just because I felt Kirk Cousins has always been about that money. So for him trying to spin a story, maybe kind of like Soto of like this or that, maybe not apples to apples, but I don't think that he's necessarily that far off. And a lot of people say who can fault him? Maybe that's your point, Rich. Like what's wrong with going after the money?
Rich Davis
But I just, I just think he was also joking a little bit.
Steve Covino
Was not joking.
Rich Davis
Okay, fine. All right, well, hey listen. We are live from the Fox Sports radio studio. And real quick, it's time for our tyrant play of the day. Your dude Jazz Chisholm showing why he's an All Star.
Steve Covino
2:2 to Jazz the pitch. Breaking ball, high drive right field. That's gone. Oh my goodness. 10 rows back, just to the line drive two run homer. And that was his second of the day. Yankees win six two. Courtesy of Yankees Radio Network. Our tire rack play of the day. I love watching Jazz Chisholm play, man. He's hitting bombs and now he's starting at second base because no more DJ LeMahaw. For over 40 years, Tire Rack has been helping customers find the right tires of how, what and where they drive ship fast and free. Backed by free road hazard protection. With convenient installation options like mobile tire installation. Tirerack.com the tire buying should be.
Rich Davis
Now it's time for old school when 50 hits. Let's go.
Steve Covino
Yeah.
Dan Beyer
What we gonna do right here is.
Spotty
Go back.
Steve Covino
Back into time, throwing it back for a Thursday. Old school when 50 hits at 50 after CNR give you the time capsule.
Rich Davis
Topic and we reminisce together.
Spotty
Yeah.
Steve Covino
So we call him super producer Danny G. Cause he's a super producer, always super producing. He's on the phones at 87799 on Fox. He sent us a meme that I don't know, was making its rounds, I guess. Yeah. And it says what's an early Internet site that kids these days will never know. And when you think about it, it's so awesome. We don't even promote websites the way we used to.
Rich Davis
Well now it's just hit up my social media handle then it'll get you wherever you need. But back in the day, websites were a thing.
Steve Covino
I mean cavinoenrich.com still exists. You can find Tickle sack there our band.
Rich Davis
But it really is just a launchpad for all your social.
Dan Beyer
When our very own from the network Brian Noe was asking me the lineup for your Vegas 20 year, I went to your website and I thought about that's the first time I actually plugged a website into my computer in a long time.
Rich Davis
Www.so what are the old websites that you spent so much time on from the heyday that kids now will never know and try to keep it clean cause my mind immediately went dirty as well. But hey, we'll take your feedback next. Kavino and Rich going old school.
