Rich Davis
Oh, man. So Bill Belichick, we talked about it yesterday, talked a little today about how it's just wild to think that if he's left out first go around. I think the interesting question is, does Brady get that same treatment?
Steve Covino
Yeah, if you follow the same logic, then he shouldn't. Right? But that would be ridiculous. And that's what makes this whole Belichick thing ridiculous. But it does make you think, right? Because clearly the voters didn't forget. And man, it really is a weird story because there's so many ways to look at it. As Rob Parker said, you know, cheating is cheating. Is he supposed to get that pass? So is there integrity involved here?
Rich Davis
I think it's attention seeking. I think it's a. Is it attention seeking?
Steve Covino
Cowardly. Cowardly has been used a lot.
Rich Davis
Let me random reporter with not much pull on the regular. Let me inject myself into the story even more by voting no. It's like, like you said, there's always that one guy until Mariano Rivera was the one unanimous envy hall of Famer. Remember, this is the one guy that's like noted Jeter, like some people just want to be the contrarian.
Steve Covino
That's a, that's a good point too, Rich. How about this as a Positive spin, I guess. Let's give credit to our pal, lifelong Patriots fan Mark Zito, one of our close friends and colleagues. He posted this on our pal Nick Casas. Nick Costas went on a rant about how the Football hall of Fame is a disgrace for not putting him in. Mark Sido says, actually, this is fantastic for Belichick, and I'll tell you why. Took a horrible PR year and turned it into everyone now talking about how great of a coach he is again. So maybe sort of a blessing in disguise because in reality, he wasn't getting great attention.
Rich Davis
That's a great point. You're right.
Steve Covino
A lot of bad headlines. Everything here. And now everyone's coming to his defense now. Tom Brady singing his praise.
Rich Davis
Everyone from the Jordan Hudson stories to, you know, North Carolina under delivering underwhelming, not even whelming, like you. You talk.
Steve Covino
Maybe the plan backfired is what I'm getting out of that. Right. Because, hey, we're gonna show Belichick and we're gonna, you know, use our. Abuse our power, as you put it before Rich, and keep them out. But think about the press he had this year with Jordan Hudson, his coaching record and everything else. His Airbnb, all the stupid stories we speculated on, and now what's everybody doing? Wait a second.
Rich Davis
Bill Belichick is the greatest. The greatest.
Steve Covino
I tell you, Tom Brady's on defending him. That man is ridiculous. He's the best of all time. So it really might have been a blessing in disguise and the best thing to happen to him moving forward.
Rich Davis
Because.
Steve Covino
Now he reminded everybody how great he was, or they reminded everybody how great he was.
Rich Davis
The sentiment on social media and like, for instance, six Super Bowls isn't enough. What does a guy got to do? And then they even reposted, like, you know, everyone from Mahomes to J.J. watt, like, every. Everyone very quickly was like, yo, this is ridiculous. So you're right. He.
Danny G
Mahomes said it first on our show yesterday.
Rich Davis
LeBron James even chimed in. So when you talk about the goats at all sports, getting his back, you're right. Maybe it is a nice little PR Thing for Belichick. Like, all right, it took this for everyone to be like, what, are you kidding? This guy's the best.
Dan
Endorsement after endorsement and indignation like that, I guess, sells really well, right?
Steve Covino
Yeah. In a way, it's sort of backfired, Rich, because so many. I would say 90% of the people are speaking loud in his. In his defense. Like, what a joke.
Rich Davis
Yeah. Hey, you know what your thoughts we'll take. We'll take two more quick phone calls and have a. I love the idea of how we live in a world. Now, listen, social media is like equal parts awesome and terrible. And I think we could all say that's a sentiment we could all get on board with.
Steve Covino
Right?
Rich Davis
Social media is the devil, but it's also pretty awesome to get your thoughts and voice out there and connect with, you know, old family members and friends. So social media, I'll tell you why it worked in a cool way after we say what's up to. Want to go to Ed in Austin?
Steve Covino
Yeah. 87799 on Fox. If you want to call in and say what's up? 87799 on Fox. Danny G, our executive producer, on standby.
Rich Davis
Ed, pick up some salt lick, get some brisket, and tell me what's on your mind, man. What's up?
Caller
So look, at one time I was the kitchen manager and we was open for Christmas, and the owner was calling into the restaurant every 15 minutes. We had a line out the door for like 30 minutes. And I had got tired of this, fed up. And I took off my apron, my hat, my shirt name tag, laid everything down and walked out. And now back to this Bill Belichick.
Rich Davis
So you actually were the guy that walked out. You were like, I'm done. So going back to the Jim Schwartz thing.
Steve Covino
Yeah, he pulled the Jim Schwartz.
Rich Davis
So you've done this. Okay.
Caller
Yeah.
Rich Davis
So.
Caller
So, you know, it wasn't enough. It was Christmas. And I give up, you know, being around my family to go in there and run the restaurant. I had this clown sitting on his butt, calling in, just dropping and fussing. It wasn't even there.
Rich Davis
Okay, fair enough.
Caller
Now, Bill, look, I don't know I'm biased about this. I don't know how long he treat cheated in these games before he got, you know, caught. Whatever. To me, you know, sometimes you just got to put your big boy pants on and take accountability for the stuff that you do.
Spot
Yep.
Rich Davis
I mean, that. That is true. But, Dan, by, correct me if I'm right or wrong, Belichick ever face any disciplinary action? He didn't. Right.
Steve Covino
Brady did.
Rich Davis
Brady for the flake gate. But Spygate never. There was never.
Spot
Yeah, not off the top of my head.
Rich Davis
I don't think there was a. I don't remember, like, oh, Belichick suspended so many games. I think.
Danny G
Don't worry. I'm asking Bing right now.
Steve Covino
Yeah. Oh, thanks, Danny. He's on it. But yeah, now. But now he's doing his Time. He's going to do at least a year before they vote again.
Rich Davis
Let's say what's up to Pennsylvania and Derek. Hey, Derek.
Caller
Hey, what's up, guys? I love you guys.
Rich Davis
Thanks, brother. What's up?
Caller
Hey, so I wanted to chime in on the, on the, it's not a middle finger, but it's a walk off. And it's one people don't talk about too much is John Kruck. He got a single and made sure he hit.300 for his career and walked off mid game and retired and left the stadium.
Ben Maller
That's.
Rich Davis
You know what, that's fantastic. You know when you were, when you were talking about like endings, I don't know why it always comes to mind. It's not an, it's not an fu. But part of me wonders, did Joey Voto get thrown out of his last game on purpose just to be like, to end in a weird way?
Steve Covino
Maybe. Yeah. It's quite the character. I don't think so, but it's a. Yeah, it's a fun way to look at it.
Rich Davis
All right, well, thank you for the feedback. Appreciate it.
Danny G
By the way, Belichick was fined $500,000.
Steve Covino
By the NFL but never suspended for anything.
Rich Davis
Fines are, I feel like suspensions. When you, when something is real, right. That you get suspended, like people get fined for wearing the wrong cleats, you know, like people get fined.
Danny G
The Patriots were also docked a first round draft pick.
Rich Davis
What's up, Dan Biden?
Spot
I also think when you actually take away wins or championships, people say it doesn't matter. We saw it happened. I think those things do matter. I think when you take away those, those records, those marks, those wins, especially as he was go, you know, have the most wins in NFL history for a head coach, those things would matter. He didn't end up facing those. But when we talk about like penalties and stuff like that, if it was more severe, I think maybe or they felt there was more of a role, you could have done those sort of things.
Rich Davis
Yeah, no doubt. That's another great point. All right. I talked about social media. Equal parts awesome and equal parts crappy. By the way, Big Mike doing his words of wisdom today. Danny, you're huffing and puffing over there. I haven't seen him today. Did he, did he like a pre record? He didn't want to miss out.
Caller
Never heard of him.
Intern
Of course he did.
Danny G
And it's right there in front of your sheet. It says, oh, you think I read this 3:05pm Mike's words of wisdom Mike was here.
Steve Covino
Disappeared. I read it.
Danny G
I know, I know.
Spot
That's why.
Rich Davis
And he reads it. I mean, it's fine.
Steve Covino
Reads it.
Dan
You're starting to feel a little under the weather.
Rich Davis
So left.
Steve Covino
I'm not feeling the best today.
Rich Davis
So Mike left. His words of wisdom. So let's do this. Let's play Mike's words of wisdom. We'll get a winner for this. And then a thought about social media and how more so than ever, we're having these amazing paper trails in the world of sports. Every Wednesday, we give away prizes. Let's do this.
Danny G
It's time for the guy that runs this place.
Spot
Just for clarification, guys, Big Mike does not run this place. He is not in charge of everything. He has no power over really, anybody here. He does not run this place.
Danny G
It's Big Mike's words of wisdom on a Wednesday.
Steve Covino
Now, let's make it very clear, Rich. We're giving away a prize pack. We have the Rich Davis special edition of our CNR and FSR mini balls.
Rich Davis
Oh, that's funny.
Steve Covino
And some koozies, right? So we got our mini nerf footballs, our mini balls, and some koozies. A Covino and Rich prize pack. If you could repeat Mike, who runs this place, Wednesday, words of wisdom verbatim.
Rich Davis
Let's hear what he dropped on us this week. Take a listen to me.
Intern
Those balls are perfect.
Steve Covino
No.
Danny G
Deserving isn't something other people get to grant or revoke. You don't become less deserving because someone else failed to recognize you.
Steve Covino
That's a confusing one.
Intern
Confucius is confused.
Steve Covino
Yeah, that was a wordy one.
Rich Davis
I feel like that was very, like, Yoda ish. Like, words were out of place or something. Like, backwards. Sorry. Let's do it one more time.
Danny G
Do it again. I think we need to hear it two more times. Deserving isn't something other people get to grant or revoke. You don't become less deserving because someone else failed to recognize you.
Steve Covino
Man, that's, like, tough to even understand.
Intern
It's just been revoked. Is it true Mike left and stormed out because he was actually up to run this place and he wasn't allowed?
Steve Covino
Yeah, he was overlooked. Nicely done. Wow.
Intern
So true.
Rich Davis
All right, well, if you can make sense of that. 87799 on Fox. You deserve a prize pack.
Steve Covino
That's, like, way too deep for us, I think.
Rich Davis
Filled with goodies just for you.
Steve Covino
I think later I'll be on the bowl. It'll all sink in. I'm like, oh, that's what Mike meant.
Rich Davis
Oh, here's a dude up.
Steve Covino
So again, your chance to win now at 8, 7, 7, 99 on Fox. Repeat that verbatim. But, Rich, what was this paper trail or this? This digital footprint? This, this. Was it a Twitter trail that sort of baffled you today?
Rich Davis
Yeah, well, I mean, this went viral and then I saw a second one. And I think we're living in a world now. Remember back in the day when we were kids, if it would be like, hey, Kavina, look, here's a childhood photo of, I don't know, one of your favorite athletes, Joe Montana or, you know, Dom Mattingly. It was like an old black and white or like a picture that felt like it's from, like olden times right now. I mean, you're seeing it with athletes now where pictures from their childhood were taken on an iPhone.
Steve Covino
It's crazy.
Rich Davis
You see players now and it's like, oh, wait, their high school and middle school photos were in 4K and HD. Like, it's just a different world we live in. And we're seeing a different trail of, like you said, tweets and social media posts. Sometimes it comes to backfire. But did you see this one? I thought this was. There's a dude that deserves some props. His name is Justin Farkas.
Steve Covino
Any relation to Scott Ding?
Rich Davis
Scott Farkas from Christmas Story? Yes, Scott Farkas, Justin Farkas wrote on Twitter in 2012, which, by the way. Oh, yeah, like what, yesterday? No, 14 years ago. 14 years ago, Justin Farkas on social media wrote the following. Holy crap. Drake May is the best athlete I've ever seen playing up a league and still the best in the league. And then someone wrote, what's the context? Drake May, 9 years old, 4ft 80 pounds, playing up with 12 year olds when he's 9, stiff arming them and running circles around them. This guy predicted Drake May was the best football player he ever saw when Drake May was 9.
Steve Covino
Are we sure that Chet Fark is here, was a grown up then, or was he just a little kid talking about another little kid?
Rich Davis
I. You know, it's interesting because it, you know when someone looks old and you're like, they might not be as old as you think? I'm not sure Justin Farkas does put this out there, but the reality is we live in a world now where you could see a tweet about someone. It made me realize there's another one out there.
Steve Covino
He must have stood out at an early age. I'm not surprised. Every time we talk to professional athletes, I love hearing about that. Aha moment. That moment where they realized they were a lot faster than the other kids. And clearly this. This was his name. Chad Farkas. Chet. Chaz. Justin. Justin Farkas clearly saw a little kid that was way dominant and he felt the need to tweet.
Rich Davis
Damn buyer.
Steve Covino
Really cool.
Rich Davis
Have you ever seen the one about Paige Beckers?
Spot
No.
Rich Davis
Danny G Spot, everyone. Listen, this is another great one. A guy named Gary Knox who is a scout, saw a young Paige Beckers. And this is a tweet from 2013, 13 years ago. Remember the name Paige Beckers. Sixth grade. Think. Diana Taurasi. Best sixth grade athlete I've ever seen. And so I feel like, I mean, you get to see a lot of swings and misses, but occasionally I think we live in a world now where social media has been a part of everyone's life. Now that you're going to see more and more of these pop up where. And you're like, it was cute that I used were cute. I know I did. But when you see like little pictures of Fernando Mendoza interviewed when he's like a Pop Warner football player, you're starting to see more and more of this. Like I said in. In high definition because my goodness, time is flying. And I think it's a pretty cool thing.
Dan
I credit those two tweeters for actually naming these athletes and being like, they could be great. You know, at the time, what was it recently? It was like a year or two ago where someone found a tweet of like, something odd that happened in society. And it was like, enough. If enough people tweet about something like, and it comes true, that you will be able to find like that one tweet where it's like, oh, that actually was true. This one person was seeing it in the future.
Rich Davis
Oh, what?
Dan
It's sort of just like by chance.
Rich Davis
And, you know, by chance, do you remember last Halloween, we joked about how this is true. There was a couple like a decade ago for Halloween was Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift. But they just were. There were a couple, but they were just the individual costumes of like, yeah, I guess I'll be Travis Kelce and his girlfriend's like, I'll be Taylor Swift. And you know, fast forward a decade later, it's like, holy crap, look at our Halloween costume and the significance of it.
Steve Covino
So, yeah, social media has provided us a place to leave this sort of this, this footprint of proof that we hadn't had in previous years. Because we could have all said things like this, but we had no proof of it.
Spot
Yeah.
Steve Covino
So it Is cool to have enough time go by where we could look back now and see some of this.
Spot
Stuff, you know, Drake May's brother Luke May was actually the most famous May because he hit a shot for North Carolina to send him to a Final Four. But so it runs in the family a little bit. But to have. Yes.
Steve Covino
Oh, wow.
Spot
Yes. But to. So to have that sort of comment, both of Beckers and May is interesting because how much do we hear about burnout, right? Are these kids that we think, like, there's kids who have dominated and you're just like, okay, well, that kid's just going to be amazing.
Rich Davis
Yeah, I worry about it a lot with kids because sometimes I talk to my wife and I'm like, I feel like I'm not doing enough. And I coach all these kids. I'll talk to a parent. It's like, yeah, little Jackson's got football this day, basketball this day, baseball this day, then a private lesson this day. I'm like, he's six.
Steve Covino
Give him a break.
Spot
For like, Drake made a dominate other 9 year olds. I don't think it's surprising considering some of the pedigree to see where he is, but to the point of somebody saying it to that extent and then actually coming to fruition is pretty crazy.
Rich Davis
Dude, my son is going to be six in a couple of years. I'm going to start making proclamations about other kids.
Steve Covino
Maybe I'll hit one, make just a few. Like, yeah, looks like a little villain. So even if he gets locked up, you have that written down somewhere.
Rich Davis
I knew he was a criminal. Man, Little Dylan, you gotta hedge your bets, man.
Steve Covino
You gotta.
Rich Davis
Yeah, you gotta.
Dan
There's the, there's the SNL sketch where Dana Carvey's playing Tom Brokaw and he's about to go on vacation for two weeks. And they're like, the producers, like, we need to record all these different things that could happen to Gerald Ford. And he's like, oh, breaking news. Gerald Ford chopped into little bits by a propane pillar or like a plane propeller. And like, he has to do all Gerald Ford eaten by sharks, Geral. And like, it just keeps going. And it's like absurd because he's like, oh, we need to make sure we have something in store in case one of these things happens.
Rich Davis
You know, I do that when I record on Sirius XM sometimes. I hate to break the glass some. I'm a professional broadcaster. I'm very involved at SiriusXM. Love being there.
Danny G
Wait, I thought you were live in New York.
Rich Davis
I. I Try to do some things live when I can, but there are times I have to record something for like, a Monday morning, you fraud. And I will guess and I'll go back and rerecord if I'm wrong. If I'm like, hey, last night, Sunday Night Football, man, the.
Dan
Oh, yeah, you have to have both.
Rich Davis
Sides ready to go. I'll say something like, man, Eagles, congrats, Philadelphia. Big game last night. And I'm like, if the Eagles lose, I then go back and like, oh, man, I guessed wrong.
Intern
You know, I used to. Well, I had interned at a couple news organizations, one being NBC, Dateline NBC.
Rich Davis
Remember on Spot? Didn't you install the button in Matt Lauer's office?
Intern
I. Shut up, Rich. I stole it. Actually, I'm gonna use it to lock you in the studio. So no news organizations, they keep a log. Like, I found a database of all stories ready to go. Like, obituaries of very famous people. So in case something happens, they're not scrambling last minute to pull together that information. They have it ready to go. All they do is add updates as time goes on. I've heard that they have those packages ready to go.
Rich Davis
I've heard a listers have obits, unfortunately, ready to roll, interestingly enough. Let me throw one more fun fact at you. I hit covina with this this morning on our other podcast. When you look at some of the players that we see in the league today, sometimes you might know something. And other people like, no, never heard that. So let me throw this out. You might know this, you might not. Do you know anything about Sam Darnold's grandpa?
Danny G
Yeah. Saw this the other day.
Rich Davis
His. His grandfather, Sam Darnold, a really cool name, right? Sam Darnold's grandfather's name is Dick Hammer.
Intern
You don't have to dump that, Sam. It's his name.
Steve Covino
Yeah.
Rich Davis
You don't have his name. It's his name.
Dan
What's in the name?
Rich Davis
His name is Dick Hammer. And not only was he an elite athlete. An Olympian. An Olympian with the coolest name. This guy was a stud athlete. Sam Darnold's grandpa. And he is the face. He's the Marlboro man.
Steve Covino
He's a Marlborough.
Danny G
He left Hollywood to become a firefighter, and they used him for the commercials.
Rich Davis
Yeah, he is one of the Marlboro men.
Danny G
Marlboro.
Rich Davis
I have a hard time saying a mar.
Caller
Ball.
Rich Davis
Why do you say, like, yeah, he's a marble man.
Steve Covino
A marble man.
Rich Davis
And again, an Olympian, a star athlete. And his name was Dick Hammer. And it's like, to think Sam Darnold winning a Super bowl would make him the coolest guy in the family. How is that like? It's like if you're Dick Hammer's grandson.
Danny G
He'S never going to be as cool as his grandpappy.
Rich Davis
You win a Super Bowl.
Steve Covino
Not with a name like Sam Darnold.
Danny G
Not even if he wins the Super Bowl, Rich. He's still not as cool as Dick Hammer.
Rich Davis
Dick. Dick Darnold. Sam Hammer. No. No.
Dan
What if Darnold wins the Super Bowl? He's like, I want to thank my grandpa, Dick Hammer. How old. How old is Darnold?
Rich Davis
Is he grandpa? He never met his grandpa.
Dan
No, he's old.
Rich Davis
Is he Darnold?
Spot
28, 29. So.
Dan
So Dick Hammer died, oh, a day before my birthday in 1999. So, yeah, he never really got to know him. He was very young.
Steve Covino
Yeah, he's 28 years old.
Danny G
Yeah.
Dan
Okay. So, like, he just barely got. He was a baby.
Rich Davis
Well, rest in peace, Dick Hammer. Couple fun stories. Listen, we'll. We'll try to get a winner from Mike's words of wisdom. Coming up. I don't know if anyone wants to repeat that. People are itching. You could be like, nobody. You. No, you could say. You could say, we're giving away a book of matches and people will call. But no one wants to repeat Mike's words of wisdom. We'll take your feedback and spots. Midweek major is coming up next. Right here, Kavino and Rich on Fox Sports Radio.
Ben Maller
Hey, it's Ben, host of the fifth hour with Ben Maller. Would mean a lot to have you join us on our weekly auditory journey. You're asking, what in God's name is the fifth hour?
Danny G
I'll tell you.
Ben Maller
It's a spin off of the Ben Mather show, a cult hit overnights on fsr. Why should you listen? Picture, if you will, a world where we chat with captains of industry in media, sports, and more every week. Explore some amazing facts about human nature and more. Listen to the fifth hour with Ben Ma on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast.
Steve Covino
All right, we're all doing the humpty dance, turning your hump day into a hump night here on the Covino and Rich show. My name is Stephen, pronounced with an even. That's Rich Davis. He likes his oatmeal lumpy. Thanks for enjoying this hump night with us, broadcasting live from the Fox Sports Radio studio. And for over 40 years, Tire Rack has been helping customers find the right tires for how what and where they drive. Speaking of 40 years, Rich, there's an anniversary today. We're going to talk about what happened 40 years ago. Side aside from tire rack, of course.
Rich Davis
Yeah.
Steve Covino
Ship fast and free. Backed by free road hazard protection with convenient installation options like mobile tire installation. Tirerack.com like tire buying should be.
Rich Davis
And now it's time for our buddy spot and a segment he loves. It's called Midweek Major. Let's go.
Danny G
Covino And Rich gets you over the middle of the week with Midweek Major.
Rich Davis
Ooh, I love that.
Danny G
We throw sports and pop culture headlines and topics at the fellas. And it's like the kids say, that's so mid week.
Caller
Definitely major.
Danny G
C and R scoring Midweek Major.
Caller
Aw.
Rich Davis
Yeah.
Danny G
I gotta go quick here to give Spotty a full eight minutes before I hand things over to the number one and only host of the segment. We usually roll the two big red love dice the the main studio, but since Covino's in Jersey for one last day. Rich, you're in the home studio. You get to call Heads or tails. It is Ben Maller's penny.
Steve Covino
All right.
Rich Davis
All right. Ready?
Spot
Yep.
Rich Davis
Heads. And we'll score.
Danny G
You lose. It's tails. Covino gets first take. And now, ladies and gentlemen, the most famous person besides Judy Bloom from Scotch Plains, New Jersey, Spotty Boy.
Steve Covino
Hi, Spot.
Rich Davis
Hi, Spot.
Intern
Sorry, my butt's not working.
Spot
Hi, guys.
Rich Davis
Hi, buddy.
Danny G
How are you?
Intern
Sorry, I was just trying to delay. I don't really have anything.
Steve Covino
You took your Matt Lauer button or your mic button?
Intern
Oh, my mic button. Sorry. Rich, try to open the door to the studio.
Danny G
All right.
Intern
You know, Camino, you mentioned it. I'll just dig into it a little bit deeper. Tyson Fury took to social media today to let people know that he's ready to come out of retirement for the fifth time. Fury confirmed that he'll be stepping back in the ring on April 11 against Russian fighter Ars Makhmudov, who has a 212 record. He said, I'm absolutely psyched. Ready, Ready to fight. Come on. The Mac is back. He said, this is just the tip of the iceberg. The bout will take place in the UK, where Fury has not fought since 2022. And he says he has nothing to do with money. He says fighting is in his blood and he will, you know, he wants to. He can't help but be a fighter. Midweek or major?
Steve Covino
It's mid. Okay. It's not we. It's definitely not major and the announcement's not major. We could have smelled that a mile away. It's mid, because I think what Netflix really wanted was Fury to come out of retirement to fight Anthony Joshua. Anthony Joshua fought Jake Paul, got into that car accident, and, you know, that car accident really shook him up. Totally understand. He needs some time. He lost some close friends. But Tyson Fury had things to do. And I'll tell you what, I think his competition is pretty tough. This is a big, tough Russian dude with a big, tough punch. Is he beatable? Yeah, he's beatable. I saw Agate Caballe, this tough German dude, beat him. I think he. He has two losses right on his record. So I think he's got his hands full with this fight, but still kind of mid because it wasn't. It isn't what it was supposed to be.
Rich Davis
Arslan Beck. Mav.
Steve Covino
Mudav Makhmudov.
Rich Davis
There it is. Let me tell you something. Spell that. I'll give you a dollar.
Steve Covino
There's an H there somewhere.
Caller
Never heard of him.
Rich Davis
It's. It's mid.
Caller
That's so mid.
Rich Davis
But also major. Because I love Tyson Fury.
Caller
Definitely major.
Steve Covino
I believe it's been since 2022 that he fought.
Rich Davis
He's an electrifying heavyweight. I don't know if he's still got it.
Intern
The last time he fought in the uk. I think it's been two years since he fought.
Steve Covino
Okay.
Rich Davis
These guys, listen, if you want to see, like, heavyweights fight, these guys are both. I mean, this guy's six' six, and I think Fury's around the same height or maybe even taller. So you got two Beastadon. So if you want to see the biggest dudes rumble, I think it'll be fun to watch. It's on Netflix, so like we said, most people have Netflix already, so, hey, have fun. I think it's fun.
Intern
All right, Caitlin Clark, Sam, listen up. Caitlin Clark may be sidelined from playing, but that's not stopping it from working. So the Fever superstar has been tapped by NBC to serve as a special contributor for its NBC coverage this NBA coverage this season. Clark is set to make her debut this Sunday, February 1st, as the Lakers take on the Knicks at MSG for the premiere of Sunday Night Basketball. Clark says she really excited to take part in the Basketball Night in America crew this season. She'll be joining the panel alongside Carmelo Anthony, Vince Carter, Tracy McGrady and Maria Taylor. She will not be a regular, but she'll be appearing throughout the season with another one scheduled at the end of March as the OKC hosts the Knicks. Of course, she's preparing for her third season in the WNBA, coming off injury, which will take place May 9 against Dallas. So midweek or major?
Steve Covino
It's mid until proven major because we fell for that whole Michael Jordan insight to excellence. They're not calling it Caitlin's insight.
Intern
No, they learned their lesson.
Steve Covino
So, yeah, I'm not buying into these headlines until proven otherwise, but, you know, it's. It's big because it's Caitlin Clark. Not many names bigger than hers.
Rich Davis
Yeah, I think it's major.
Caller
Definitely major.
Rich Davis
Because Caitlin Clark's a big name. And I feel like we lost the Caitlin Clark buzz a little bit last year.
Intern
Lost a lot of it.
Rich Davis
She's healthy, by the way, due to injuries.
Dan
She's coming back.
Rich Davis
Yeah, I actually looked it up. Yeah. She. According to sources, she's ready to compete at a high basketball level again. I don't know. I wonder if the basketball. The WNBA buzz is gone. Does it? I, I, I feel like grand opening, grand closing in my mind.
Dan
Can I wait on this? I do. I think that her being on NBA broadcasts actually kind of, like, lifts them up. I think it might get more people interested, at least in that broadcast. I think this is major, but I might be biased.
Rich Davis
Listen, I'm.
Intern
You don't say so.
Rich Davis
I'm all. I'm all for, you know, women's sports getting to the next level. Right. I mean, I just wonder if our interest levels are still there for Caitlin Clark as something as simple as something she can't prevent, like an injury. People might be on to the next thing. I'm curious what ratings look like this coming year.
Intern
All right, you mentioned you're gonna tap on something that was 40 years ago today. Well, 40 years ago Monday was where the Chicago Bears dominated the Patriots to win Super Bowl 20 in New Orleans. Well, an iconic piece of memorabilia from that game is hitting the auction. Auction block. And that's Mike Ditka's signature Chicago Bears vest. You know, the one with the bears across the chest. Yes, I mean, that's right. So the auction being held, of course, by Ken golden has everything and has a current bid of $82,000. If you want to jump in. Auction goes until February 7th. The Vesta size XXL and comes with a certificate of authenticity signed by Ditka himself. So a cool piece of memorabilia. If you want to jump on that midweek or major.
Steve Covino
This is. I think it is kind of major, to be honest, because when you think of that team and you think of Ditka, you think of that vest and get a golden Houston's great at driving those prices up for these things. I think we're going to see this exceed values of $80,000 for sure. But it's pretty iconic, dude, especially for the right buyer or Bears fan especially. Yeah, this is pretty major. I think I'm into collectibles too, though.
Rich Davis
So major.
Caller
Definitely major.
Rich Davis
Absolutely major. If you're from the Midwest, The Chicago Bears 85 team is your last moment of glory. It's over 40 years ago. And Saturday Night Live only. Only, only enhance this by any bit or any. Any thought of Ditka is associated with that sweater vest from the 80s. This should be a piece. If you're a Chicago baller and you're the biggest dude in Chicago, you're balling, you're a millionaire. If you're Abe Froman, I honestly, you're.
Steve Covino
Abe from the sausage king of Chicago.
Rich Davis
This is one of the most. Other than a Michael Jordan. Other than a Michael Jordan piece, this might be one of the cooler memorabilia. Memorabilia pieces in Chicago sports. So I think it's great. Do you think it smells like. You think it smells like. It smells like onion rings.
Intern
Smells like Sassage.
Rich Davis
Sassage.
Steve Covino
Sassage.
Dan
Oh, it smells like some old Brute cologne or something.
Spot
All right.
Intern
Patriots Coke. Coach. Coach Mike.
Steve Covino
It smells like Old Spice with sausage. Oh, yeah.
Intern
Oh, that's a great smell. Bottle that promise he made in 2019. But rightly so. So during a 2019 interview with Barstools busting with the boys, then Titans head coach was asked if he'd cut off his junk for another title. To which he said, yeah, probably. Once you've been married for 20 years, who needs it anyway? Well, earlier this week, he's appearing on the Greg Hill Show. Rabel was asked if that was still the plan, of course, heading into Super Bowl 60 against the Seahawks. His response? Maybe I'll cut it in half, but I'm not cutting off the whole thing. He said he was just playing around with the guys back then. Half the stuff he says doesn't mean anything. But of course, we'll see how it goes next week, midweek or major.
Steve Covino
Hey, man, I think this Rabel story is more major than we're giving it credit for. So any sort of news surrounding this guy? I mean, we're talking about Bill Belichick. We should be talking about Mike Rabel. Get this. He's the first person to start for and head coach the same franchise in a Super Bowl. That's pretty freaking amazing, dude.
Rich Davis
Oh, I think you're gonna say it's amazing. That he said he'd cut half off and he's confident with what he would have left after that.
Steve Covino
Oh, yeah. I mean, well, that. That's pretty amazing, too.
Dan
Length or width or like, what are we doing here?
Intern
Could he still be a head coach?
Steve Covino
That's a good one. It's like a sort of a root kind of coach at that point.
Rich Davis
I think it's.
Steve Covino
Look at the time.
Spot
And it's almost time for buyer.
Rich Davis
I think it's funny. You know what?
Ben Maller
Maybe.
Rich Davis
Yeah, if he's married 20 years and hasn't gotten any, maybe he needs to buy some of that new Sydney Sweeney lingerie for his wife. Siren. Oh, yeah.
Intern
That's gonna be my final story. But yeah, you.
Steve Covino
That's major.
Intern
I don't even need to check. That's major.
Caller
Definitely major.
Rich Davis
Major. And we go to Dan Times, too, for an update spot. Thanks, buddy.
Intern
Thanks, guys.
Steve Covino
What up? Take it over, Dan.
Dan
All right.
Spot
Great thing to follow, maybe.
Danny G
Sure.
Spot
We don't have any calls to do. Big Mike's words of wisdom.
Rich Davis
I think we're good.
Spot
Give me a little buffer between the two. Cleveland Browns are hiring former Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monkin to be their new head coach after being passed over for the head coaching job. Reports out of Cleveland say defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz has told team members he won't return to the staff next season. Seattle Sports 7:10am In Seattle spoke with former Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, who defended his former head coach, Bill Belichick. And Belichick snubbed from the hall of Fame.
Caller
There's no coach I'd ever rather play for. If I'm picking one coach to go out there to win a Super bowl.
Steve Covino
Give me one season.
Caller
I'm taking Bill Belichick, so that's enough said.
Spot
Everybody's weighing in, including the president. President Trump taking to social media to support Belichick, saying the decision to keep him from being a first ballot hall of Famer was, quote, ridiculous, end quote, and said they should overturn the voting results. The Pro Football hall of Fame released a statement explaining how voting members could be removed if it's found out they violated the selection process bylaws. Patriots quarterback Drake may limited practice today because of a shoulder injury, the Athletic reported late yesterday. The jets reached out to Jon Gruden to gauge his interest in joining Aaron Glenn's coaching staff. Gruden, though, declined that offer. Giannis Antetokounmpo could be on the move. ESPN reports some NBA teams are aggressively pursuing the Bucs forward, with Milwaukee listening to those offers. NBA's trade deadline is a week from tomorrow. Rocket center Stephen Adams going to miss the rest of the season following ankle surgery. Patrick Reed leaving LIV Golf seeking reinstatement to the PGA Tour. And Jannik Sinner is going to face Novak Djokovic in the men's semis of the Australian Open after overnight wins. Guys, back to you.
Rich Davis
Thank you, Dan Byer.
Steve Covino
Thanks, Dan.
Rich Davis
All right, we got more convene on Rich. And it is an anniversary of a tragic event 40 years ago in 1986. So we're gonna do a quick little way back Wednesday, little peek around the world of sports 40 years ago. What were you doing in 1986 and what happened on this day? We do that next right here, Fox Sports Radio.
Steve Covino

So go back in time, guys. The year was 1986 and a lot of us remember where we were because something sort of impactful happened. Unfortunately, teachers rolled in TV screen to your classroom, most likely depending on how old you were. But that's my memory of it. Yeah, 40 years ago today, your teachers were all excited because the first teacher was entering outer space and we all sat there watching as tragedy unfolded.
Rich Davis
Yeah, if you're in your 40s, it might be one of your first school memories of teachers crying and being upset as the Challenger exploded. And I remember I was in kindergarten. I remember I have a vague memory of being like, why are the adults crying? When you're a kid, you don't know what's going on, but you remember people being upset when they wheel in the TV on the cart. Like Covino said That's an early kindergarten memory.
Danny G
It's the first time I saw adults blubbering like crying uncontrollably.
Rich Davis
It was a big moment.
Steve Covino
There was a lot of like teacher connection. Right. Because that was the big story. Christy McAuliffe and all these astronauts and NASA was big and they're going outer space. You know, the teachers were hyping us up for weeks and weeks to come about this story. And I think from their perspective, looking back, they probably just felt not only terrible because they were teachers, but they were terrible to have to watch us as kids witness something so tragic. Right. Because they're looking at a bunch of confused little kids. Like, what just happened? Clearly remember, like not understanding that it exploded. Like for all we knew or I knew at the time was like, is it supposed to do that? What just happened? It didn't click until you saw the reaction of the teachers and they all clamored together. And it's something a lot of us will never forget. For sure.
Rich Davis
Yeah, I mean, we've talked about this before, but if you were a kid of the 80s, there was a distinct point where like space stuff sort of dropped off because there was a point where like kids would want to go to space camp and NASA was a big deal. Like there was like a fascination with I want to be an astronaut. And that just sort of like went away. Remember that vibe of like kids like it's career week at my kids school when we were little kids, there was always a couple kids like, I want to be an astronaut. What happened to that?
Intern
We're going to the moon in a month and no one cares.
Rich Davis
Yeah, that's true.
Steve Covino
We're going around. Not like on the moon. I think we're like around the moon or something, but still very cool. You're right. And you know, it takes us back to that time, but it also takes us back to 86. Where were you when it happened? And we remember the Challenger and the Explosion. But it was a big year for you. Rich Davis, a little pumpkin pie, nose picking, haircutted kid rooting his Mets on 86. Yeah, it's one of the first things I think of.
Rich Davis
Well, 86 Mets. And you know, you, you think about what year they played versus what year they won the Super Bowl. We think 85 Bears. But that Super bowl was in 86.
Steve Covino
So that was an 86.
Rich Davis
The year kicked off with the super bowl shuffle and Jim McMahon and Refrigerator Perry. And later in the year, of course, the, the, the Metses and the Red Sox. One of the most memorable world series. Throughout the year, Oprah debuted on television. Top Gun was like the big movie every kid was loving. Halley's Comet. Remember Halley's comet? That was 86.
Steve Covino
So not just Top Gun, though. Aliens. Thornton Mellon was doing the triple Lindy. Got to tie it back to sports. Triple Lindy. Legendary. Used to do that move right back to school. Crocodile Dundee was big. Rocky 4, one of your favorites, came out that year. Around that time.
Rich Davis
Rocky 4 was 85.
Steve Covino
85, yes. What I thought, too. It says it's listed here 86. Maybe we were still living through the hype in 86, but as far as cartoons, just to give you a time stamp of where you were, like 40 years ago, the Smurfs, Alvin and the Chipmunks, the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic came out.
Rich Davis
Let me hit you up with one.
Steve Covino
And. And the Cartoon exploded in 87.
Rich Davis
Let me. Let me.
Steve Covino
Maybe a bad choice of words right there.
Spot
Here.
Steve Covino
The cartoon got big, became very popular in 87.
Rich Davis
I'll give you one. I know little Steve Cavino is excited about getting a Nintendo game of that. That was gold.
Steve Covino
Zelda. Zelda.
Rich Davis
Zelda came out in 87.
Steve Covino
And this is kind of weak. One of the biggest songs. That's what Friends are for. The on war we can. Friends say you say me, Lionel Richie.
Rich Davis
I have a question. If you think it's a weak song, why do you want to sing it after every show?
Steve Covino
Say it for all.
Rich Davis
Come on, Danny. The good times, the bad times.
Steve Covino
That's for friends. So where Were you in 86? Hit us up at Covino and Rich.
Rich Davis
I will see you guys tomorrow. Until then, ariba di, baby.
Steve Covino
See you in the promised land.
Rich Davis
Goodbye.
