That immediately they had to say, all right, let's forget December. Now we got to do all dates in January too.

So Zach Brown, hang on to that thought because if we have time here, we're going to talk big artists and a small venue because there's a story about the Tampa Bay Rays. Big artists, small venue. Start thinking about that. And speaking of artists, that's what we're talking about right now. Old school in 50 hits. We throw it back and reminisce every Thursday here on the Covino and Rich show. And super producer Danny G Usually finds a Great story for us. Or a great meme that gets the wheels turning. And it was simply if you were on a five hour road trip, a five hour drive and you could listen to one artist, who would it be? Is Zach Brown on your list?

[Danny G]

I was going to say Zach Brown is one of those guys that he has upbeat stuff, chill stuff, where. I'm not saying he's my number one answer, but Zac Brown is a guy that I feel like.

[Covino]

Does he have a catalog deep enough for five hours of listening pleasure? I think that's part of it.

[Producer]

He's no George Strait. I do like his music, but some of his songs sound similar to each other. Whereas I would go for an artist where they have a nice mix of different tempos. Like for rock, I would go Stone Temple Pilots.

[Covino]

Ooh, that. You know, that's a good one. I love stp and I have a theory on them, Danny G. Which is interesting. You bring them up. I feel like There's a core four when it comes to the 90s grunge era, right? And I think it's pretty obvious. It's Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and probably Alice in Chains. Right? They were the Seattle based, right? And of course there's the other bands like the pumpkins and the STPs of the world. They're right there. But when it goes song for song, I think STP has more songs than anybody. Like, more good songs. They're not as big as the other songs from the other bands, but more songs that you love from STP than any other band.

[Producer]

Rock that Purple album, dude.

[Covino]

That's a great answer, man. I really love that answer. I'm mad I didn't come up with it. Because they have so many great songs and enough albums, I think that you could fill five hours of listening.

[Danny G]

So what artists?

[Covino]

What are they?

[Danny G]

What artists? Can you go on a road trip and only listen to them? What's the one that comes to mind where you're like, that would be a nightmare.

[Covino]

A nightmare. You know what it'd be? It'd have to be someone that has a deep catalog that people love, right? Because why would I even bring that up? And for me, it'd be like a Dave Matthews type. It's like, oh, I grabbed I'm glad you saw him 8,000 times. I'm glad you love all songs. I don't want to hear that guy.

A lot of their music sounds very.

[Covino]

Different and I don't hate them by any means, but I know people love them so much that if they were like in the car with me and that. That was their choice. I'd be like, yeah, how about now?

[Producer]

Like a crooner. Like Celine Dion.

[Covino]

Oh, yeah, I'm not a kid.

[Danny G]

After a while, you'd be like, enough Celine.

[Producer]

It would drive me crazy.

[Danny G]

You know, this is so east coast of me. But you could throw on Billy Joel's greatest hits, and that could give you a couple hours right there. I'm going to say Billy Joel, as far as classic artist, he's got at least 30 songs. That would take you multiple hours into this hypothetical.

Well, again, you got generations of Ozzy as we remember him this week as well. Sabbath started in 67, so you can go from 67 up until not too long ago. Ozzy's still making new music. So you got a big, deep catalog there based on that, based on this meme. Who's your answer? 87799 on Fox. Let's get involved. Fox Sports Radio Nation. Who's that artist for you? 5 hours on the road. A lot of people on the road. If you had to pick one artist, this is usually like if you're stranded on an island. What if.

I have a. I have a rub here. This is. I feel like I'm cheating. But what if I said Dave Grohl and that encompassed Nirvana and the Foo Fighters, and you could listen to just.

[Covino]

Like Dave Grolo, Queens of the Stone Age, because he's involved in all that stuff.

[Producer]

That's fine. Yeah, like, if an artist peels off and goes solo.

[Danny G]

So if you said, I'm going to do the Grohl mix, which for five hours, you could do the Foos, Queens of the Stone Age and Nirvana. Yeah, that might be the answer.

[Covino]

That's a good one. That's a real good one.

Five hours is perfect, too, because that's for us. That's a drive to the Bay Area.

[Danny G]

Danny G. Is there a hip hop artist that goes deep enough for you?

[Producer]

Oh, yeah. I've done this before where I played all Run dmc, starting from their first album all the way up to their most recent, when Jam Master Jay was still alive, man.

[Covino]

Yeah. Again, another. They started, what, 83 or 84? I remember buying the cassette. But raising hell up until. Yeah, the King of Rock era and all that other stuff.

[Producer]

King of Rock is one of the best albums of all time.

[Danny G]

I don't want to go too mainstream because he is a mainstream hip hop artist.

[Covino]

Oh, wait, hold on, hold on. Before I forget, because I'm a pea brain, but based on what Danny G said, that's Why? I don't want to get ahead.

[Danny G]

All right, pea brain.

[Covino]

Based on what you said, rest. Remember who came up with Run dmc? Beastie Boys have a pretty deep catalog, and people forget them often when it comes to hip hop and how many songs they have that might be in the conversation, because they did it for a real long time.

[Producer]

Yeah, they were early Def Jam and they evolved, playing their own instruments and doing experimentation. And they really. From their first album to where they wound up.

[Covino]

Yeah. Hip hop to rock.

[Producer]

Talk about an evolution.

[Danny G]

I'll give you. I'll give you my hip hop artist. Again, mainstream. I'll give you a hint who it is. You saw him have, like, an awkward interaction with Jared Goff on quarterback where neither one really knew what to say.

[Covino]

Flavor Flav.

[Danny G]

No, Flavor. Flavor.

[Covino]

No, I saw Flavor Flav with Joe Barrow. That's what it was. Yeah.

[Danny G]

Jared Goff and Eminem, I felt like they had.

[Producer]

Eminem was so awkward. He was like, you're taller than I thought you were going to be. And Jared Goff was like, I'm so happy you came here. It's nice to have you here. Yeah, they both were very awkward.

[Covino]

It was. And it was noticeable. I'm glad you brought that up, Rich. But I think that because there was a mutual respect there, I really. That's what I wanted to believe, because for Eminem, even though he's a big star, he's also a big fan, right, Golf? That's Eminem. Yeah.

[Danny G]

It was awkward, but I think Eminem is so.

[Covino]

Yeah, he's deep.

[Danny G]

Music wise. That, I mean, you can name. You could probably.

[Covino]

You could probably name at least 25 Eminem songs. And again, being music nerds like we are, Besides sports nerds, 15 songs typically makes up an hour. Okay, right. So if typically 15 songs makes up an hour, if you got an artist that has 30, 40 something songs, you're talking about half your trip. You don't even need to repeat music.

I got one. Then, based on the grow, if we could say, you know, if he's part of Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Queens of Dystonia, all this other stuff. How about Pharrell Williams, just as a producer and collaborator with how many songs he's had and been a part of since he was like, 17 years old.

[Danny G]

You'Re gonna start with Rump Shaker and work your way. All the way.

[Covino]

Exactly. You go from Rump Shaker, which is what, late 80s, to Happy, which is pretty recent, to the Minions era. So Pharrell Williams might be a good five hour mix to put in there. So again, who would it be for you on a Throwback Thursday, old school and 50 hits.

[Danny G]

I think one of the top answers, maybe not for grown men. You know, mostly listening to us. We do have a lot of women that listen to Fox Sports radio, but I think that the reason she sells out stadiums around the world. There's a lot of people that would tell you Taylor Swift has like album after album after album that women know every word to. You saw that Eras tour. It was. She would perform.

Yeah, I hated her.

[Danny G]

She would perform for three to four hours and people wanted more.

I'm. I'm not a Taylor Swift hater by any means, but I'm not a fan, right? And Rich was like, I guarantee you know at least 20 songs. I'm like, get out of here, dude. There's no way I know a few of them, but I knew 22. 22. You knew 2222 songs from Taylor Swift that I refused to admit I knew.

So I love that. I love that. Because you know what it reminds me of? If you watched Dave Chappelle, one of his more recent comedy specials, Dave Chappelle does a really funny bit where he takes his kid to see Kevin Hart and how his kids, he's Dave Chappelle.

[Covino]

He's his dad today.

[Danny G]

But to his kids, we all think of Dave Chappelle as the goat, the best living comic right now. Not only a comedian, the guy's an orator. He could speak and you just want to listen. But meanwhile, Dave Chappelle's kids are obsessed with Kevin Hart.

[Covino]

And I believe Kevin Hart's kids would give him crap about Nick Cannon or something like that. I feel like it just trickles down. And it's about when your kids don't appreciate you. And it's not even just your kids. Like, Rich is right. You think it's your friends and family that support you. It's usually not. And that's a commonality. You know how many friends and family come up to us and tell us about these great podcasts or radio shows they listen to, and we're like, hello. You know, your buddy here does that every day, and they don't give a diddly squat about it.

[Danny G]

Support.

[Covino]

It comes from other people, comes from afar.

[Danny G]

It's odd. We could do an event and have a ton of great listeners show up and so many great people supporting our show. Meanwhile, your high school friends or your college frat bros.

[Covino]

I think it has something to do with just not being able to see you in that light. And when people do, you almost have to respect it more. It's like, my dopey friend, I'm gonna put this in his hands. But it really is a disrespect if your buddy opens up a pizzeria in your hometown and you're eating pizza another place. What kind of friend are you? Right? It's like, you got to support your buddies. I don't understand that.

[Producer]

I think our friends and families are so used to us doing this after all these years that that's part of it.

[Covino]

It's almost expected. Yeah. It's like, yeah, you're absolutely right about that. So Tyree Kill son just doesn't appreciate him for being Tyree Kill. They're big Justin Jefferson fans, which is hilarious.

[Producer]

And I get it. Jefferson's one of the most exciting wide receivers to watch right now.

[Covino]

No doubt. No doubt. So when your kids don't appreciate you, being a parent is a. Is a blessing and a curse. But there does come a point in time where they do start to understand. And I think that's what we all wait and hope for when they. When they have that epiphany and they realize, you know, when we were at the All Star break in Atlanta just last week, we had a blast, by the way, filling in for the Dan Patrick show and just having so much fun there. We ran into a guy. We're broadcasting live. We ran into a guy. And he goes, yeah, man. My dad was a big leaguer. Like, who's your dad? He's like, I. I don't know if you know him. I think he was assuming we were a lot younger, Rich. He goes, yeah, man. Chet Lemon. Chet Lemmon of the Tigers. He's like, yeah, man, I'm Chet Lemon Jr. Like, we had a whole plastic.

[Producer]

Sheet of his baseball cards.

[Covino]

Yeah, exactly. I had, like, so many cards of his dad growing up, Chet Lemon. And he went on to tell us. He goes, yeah, man. Like, I come here, you know, to these All Star events because I. You know, people tell me about my dad and, you know, I'm a big baseball fan. He goes. Growing up, though, he was just dad. And it took years and years and years for me to realize the impact he had in the MLB and with the Tigers and Detroit and, you know, amongst the fans. So sometimes the kids and the people closest to you are the last to really see it.

[Danny G]

They, they may see your greatness, but it's odd.

[Covino]

They know, but they don't understand because you're just the family member to them.

[Danny G]

Yeah, like an up and coming artist might be doing a showcase or like, hey, guys, we're, we're doing a small concert. Meanwhile, like their, their friends and family are not the ones that are going. And it is wild to see that. It even extends to the NFL, where Justin Jefferson has the heart of Tyreek Hill's kids.

[Producer]

You know where this was pointed out recently, Quarterback on Netflix where Kirk Cousins said he just wanted to hang on. He wants to hang on long enough to. Where his boys really understand what he does for a living because they still, when he got benched behind Penix Jr. They still didn't understand what was going on.

[Covino]

They thought he wasn't on the team.

[Producer]

Yeah, exactly.

[Covino]

Which proved to Cousins that he still has a few more years left to play because they quite, they don't quite understand it.

[Danny G]

Well, well, think about it. Who was the. Was it AJ McCarron that decided to play in the XFL?

[Producer]

I think you're right.

[Covino]

Yeah, I think you're right.

[Producer]

Because he took a pay cut.

[Danny G]

Yeah. He had the chance to be on a practice squad or be a backup in the NFL, but he said, I rather be a starter, play in the XFL so my kids could see what dad does.

[Covino]

Yep. That was a big part of the story. Absolutely.

[Danny G]

So even, even Tyree Kill, if you think your kids are unimpressed with you. Tyree Kill, the fastest receiver in the world. His kids are like, yeah, I'm more of a Justin Jefferson guy.

[Covino]

That's really the point of the conversation, guys. Like, we're growing up as young men and dads in a world where dads don't get the same respect that they did in previous generations. Like, think of, we always reference Dan Lauria in the wonder years. Like that 1960s dad when he came home. Everyone's like, oh, Dad's home. Let me get your shoes. Dad, is dinner ready for dad? And dad. And dad came home all grumpy with his lunchbox, didn't talk to anybody. Everyone, like, worshiped the guy. Right. Even when that guy passed away, he was probably an a hole, but everyone's like, oh, we praised this guy. Oh, right. Now today's dad is viewed as this dopey guy on tv and in commercials, there's comedy routines about how dads don't even know where his own socks are and he has to ask his wife because he's an incompetent ninny.

[Danny G]

Dopey.

[Covino]

Dad's dopey. Oh, sorry, honey. Dad gets no respect from his kids and everything. So it's nice to know that even a Tyreek Hill doesn't get the respect you would think he gets from his own children.

[Danny G]

Could we meet somewhere in between? Do we need to be grumpy terrible dads like a, like a wonder years dad or like a Putz 2025 dad?

[Covino]

I'm the guy. If you're a dopey dad wearing sandals and socks, you deserve to be disrespected in my opinion. But there are a lot of middle ground guys like you and I, Rich, I think, and Danny G that deserve and have garnered a little bit of respect. Right? But if you're a total dope wearing a fanny pack, I'm not going to respect you anyway.

With that said, let's go to a guy that would never wear sandals in a fanny pack. Isaac, my pet peeves. My lunch is almost making a repeat showing. I mean, how can people wear socks with their sandals under any circumstances?

Earlier today, the Baltimore Orioles won at Cleveland 43 despite two home runs by Stephen Kwan. And getting it away just moments from now, the Detroit Tigers playing host to the Toronto Blue Jays. I don't think they get enough credit for being like really good announcers and.

Think about it. If there were weak ass announcers we criticize, NFL and NBA and baseball announcers we don't like, we give big props to the ones that are great. Imagine if wrestling didn't have the Jim Ross's and the Jesse the bodies and Vince McMahon's back then. Would have been different.

And this ties into something that's going on in the world of sports.

Yeah, they're saying Tampa Bay Rays, if.

They make the playoffs.

[Danny G]

If they make the playoffs. And right now, I mean we're going into the, we're going into the All Star break and they're, they're in. Well, we're coming out of the All Star break, should I say, and they're in the mix. They're, they're there in the mix. They're there. Any team that's over. 500, as you know, is always a little win streak away from being in that wild card mix. As of right now, they are one and a half games out of the wild card, which means you win 8 out of 10 here in the playoffs. So the Rays are very possible to make the postseason and they're saying that they would play.

[Covino]

Yes, the Rays would host games of Steinbrenner Field if they make the playoffs.

[Danny G]

MLB is going to lose a lot of money off of the.

[Covino]

If they have potential games, they're going to have Matt George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, which is a minor league stadium that only holds 10,000 people. 10,046 to be exact. So again, that's sort of the big artist, small venue sort of experience. Dude, we went to big game, major league team at a minor league ballpark.

[Danny G]

You and I caught a game up in Sacramento this year and I think it was one of the cooler experiences in sports that I've seen. We saw Mets A's. Our buddy invited us up to Sacramento, Jaime, and he said, guys, I got tickets right behind home plate because they're inexpensive. It's Sacramento, it's the A's. We went up there and Danny, it was like an experience. Like, no, no other.

[Producer]

There's people in folding chairs on the lawn.

[Danny G]

Dude, in the outfield, we were sitting so close to the field because even the distance between like home plate and the netting was closer. And it's almost like seeing an artist at a bar.

[Covino]

Yeah, yeah.

[Producer]

Like a small Burbank theater. Remember that time I got you guys tickets to go with me to see Jelly roll in 2023 before he had blown up all the way?

[Danny G]

Yes.

[Producer]

Yeah. You guys didn't go.

[Danny G]

We didn't go.

[Covino]

But you did.

[Danny G]

You did. It was awesome.

[Producer]

It was. Yeah. When you get to see an artist play for a couple hundred people and then all of a sudden they're in big arenas and stadiums, it's such a cool feeling.

[Covino]

But yeah, if you could them in an intimate setting, it's a whole different experience. And that's what this playoff experience could be. We saw a regular season game, Rich, at that Sacramento stadium. This would be a playoff atmosphere for only 10,000 people. A big league in playoff atmosphere in Tampa. So that would be really cool. It would be a different experience, next level experience. And it just forces the question to everybody listening. What was that experience for you where you got to see a big time artist at a small venue? Not everyone gets that opportunity, but you've seen him and you heard about him. How was that Zach Brown one?

[Danny G]

Man, I saw Zach Brown with like literally 50 other people.

[Covino]

He did like a pop up show out of nowhere here in Los Angeles. And Rich got to go because we just interviewed.

[Danny G]

I posted just a quick little clip on my Instagram at Rich Davis, I will say if you got Sirius xm, they do those small stage concerts. Yeah, I heart does the Iheart Theater, which is always a small venue. If any radio, if any radio company, Burbank Theater, any, any radio company, whether it's I Heart, Sirius, xm, Odyssey, NPR.

[Producer]

With a tiny desk.

[Danny G]

Dude, if you have the ability to see an artist in that venue, you know, put your name in the mix for those contests because there's nothing, nothing like it.

[Covino]

No, it's a great experience for sure.

[Danny G]

It's hard to want to see an artist in a big venue after you've seen them with like 100 lucky people. So that would be interesting though, if the playoffs. Now I'm rooting for Tampa just to see what would happen because baseball doesn't really want to. That's. You're losing $40,000, 40,000 tickets. All that shared revenue. All that shared revenue.

We should root for Sacramento as well.

[Danny G]

Yeah, the age just got to win like 40 in a row. We'll see what happens. But what would you say, cove they got a chance? You're an AL east guy.

[Covino]

Yeah, of course they got a chance. That's anyone's division. The way the Yankees are playing, they're stinking like Abe Lincoln. Their defense is horrible. Dude, they made four errors against division rival yesterday Blue Jays making them look terrible. So yeah, it's, it's anyone's. And you know, it could be pretty cool to be a part of if you're able to get a ticket to that. That's the best way to experience anything, the greatest way to experience one of your favorite artists for sure. I'm just thinking of all the random shows I was able to see in my. I saw like not even a big huge fan, but I saw Radiohead at Electric Lady Studios in New York City, like right there, up close and personal, very intimate. If you ever seen a band perform at a record store or something just because they did it for fun. Yeah, there's nothing like it. And that will be the sports equivalent if they make the playoffs.
