This could be a long buildup for a disappointing drop.

And be honest, a disappointing drop would be staying with the Yankees. For you, that would be great news. But for everyone else we're like, well then why didn't he just say you were going to stay?

[Covino]

And that's a random social media reference of the guy that has that song. I like long build ups and disappointing drops. I like long buildups and disappointing drops. And he goes, that's the drop. It's like a club remix sort of thing. And it's sort of like Grand Theft Auto 6. It's like we've been waiting forever and they keep pushing it back. It's like, are you ever gonna get the announcement? Is it ever coming out?

I finally finished it, but you know how long it took me to really gain interest again in that last season of Stranger Things?

[Covino]

I still haven't finished it. They waited too long. And Cody Bellinger, you could say, hey, good for him, but he's waiting a really long time. But he has the MLB by the cojones right now and that's really what we're getting at because he is the difference maker. We established yesterday that whatever team he ends up on is the team that's proving they're in it to compete. If the Dodgers are the team to beat, and everybody knows that they are, they just keep getting better. All these other teams with big time budgets and big time players need Cody Bellinger at this point. That would be the Mets, the Yankees, the Phillies. The Phillies.

[Rich]

The Phillies lost out in like the, as they say, the 11th hour to the Mets on Boba Shet. They thought they had Boba Shet.

[Covino]

So it's a good place to be. He's in a great, great situation right now.

[Rich]

Cody Bellinger just knows there's a bunch of thirsty teams that are all openly saying we need one other big all star potential piece to compete with the Dodgers because the Dodgers are just so stacked compared to the rest of Major League Baseball that the Padres, Phillies, Mets, Blue Jays, Yankees, all these teams, they, they all are thinking, well, we need like one more piece or at least one more piece. So Cody Bellinger just sitting around chilling And Danny talk about things that we just wait so long for that you. Eventually you're going to be like, I lose interest, like, I think on Weekend Hobnob. And you said there's a sequel or prequel to Game of Thrones.

Yeah.

Don't you feel like you watch Game of Thrones a decade ago? I'm done with the Lannisters.

I get it.

They pay their debts. Good job.

In case you're wondering, a lot of people remember when Guns N Roses kept teasing new music, and it was like 10 years that had gone by before I think it was Chinese democracy came out. And, like, you know, by the time it came out, you're not even excited anymore. So if there's other examples of. Of just long buildups and disappointing drops, things that you were waiting for for just way too long, you could let us know at 87799 on Fox. But we're starting to feel that way about Cody Bellinger. Like, all right, Dud, what's the deal here? We need to know who's competing.

Yes, he is. We're waiting and waiting for the Rock fans. It's the new Incubus, if you're a rock fan. Because they've been talking about this new album for a long time. I know not everybody is into Incubus, but I am. And he is the difference maker. He's the game changer in this situation, in this scenario, he is that missing piece that so many competitive teams need to be a legitimate competitor in the mlb.

[Rich]

As we said, the Mets get him now all of a sudden, while the Mets did lose Polar Bear Pete Alonso and they traded Nimmo and McNeil, you know, the Mets would now have Boba Shet and they would have Bellinger and they have Polanco and Marcus Simeon. So I got. And then the Yankees lose.

[Covino]

Just.

[Rich]

The Yankees can't afford to Lose that bat that was already in their lineup.

[Covino]

I got one for you that expired, expired, expired, expired. That's the way to put it. Conor McGregor's coming. Expired, expired, expired. I got an ant problem. Conor McGregor talking about coming back. It's like, do you really give a diddly squat at this point? That dude, in our minds, you know, hey, he could prove us wrong and I would love that. But he's washed. I say that respectfully because I don't want to ever have a confrontation waiting.

[Rich]

For Floyd Mayweather Jr. To fight Manny Pacquiao. And it was like 10 years too late.

[Covino]

It was, it was past his prime. The only thing that kept it competitive is they were both kind of old, right? But it was as far as excitement level. You were past it. Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury kind of passed the point of excitement. Cody Bellinger, you got to make the announcement soon because we're all like sitting here on the edge of our seat wondering what team you're going to make that difference on. Any other examples? If you're Cody Bellinger, what do you do?

[Covino]

If I'm Cody Bellinger, I stay on the Yankees. Not just because I'm a Yankees fan. He's already proven he could deliver there on a big stage. The dude put up big numbers. If you're Cody, that right porch, that short porch right there, tailor made for his swing. And they all love him there. They really loved him. He was, he was a difference in the clubhouse.

[Rich]

You know, the protection you get in the lineup when you're batting, you're going to get pitched to when you're batting next to Aaron Judge.

[Covino]

Aaron Judge, and you know, he's got that family lineage. His dad played for the Yanks. So I really, not only did I, but it seemed like the fans really embraced that and they loved him for it. And I think he belongs there and he keeps the Yankees competitive.

[Rich]

If you, if you're Cody Bellinger, but.

[Covino]

I also think he'd be a huge plus for your Mets.

[Rich]

If you're Cody Bellinger and the Yankees say, hey, listen, no, no games. I'm not playing silly games with you again.

[Covino]

The controversy is he wants seven years and they, most teams want to give him about five.

[Rich]

I was going to say that if you're, if you're Cody Bellinger and the Yankees, like, yeah, five years, 30 something million dollars a year, 150 plus. If a team like the Mets who are in the same city or Philadelphia, which is an hour and a half, away. Did the Phillies or the Mets, who are both competitive teams that will compete for the playoffs, if you're Cody Bellinger, is a sixth or seventh year enough leaving the pinstripes.

[Covino]

A sixth or seventh year? Yeah, because that's what him and his agent want. They want the longevity, they want the security. They want that sixth or seventh year that the Yankees aren't willing to budge on about.

[Rich]

Let me, let me ask you one last question.

[Covino]

Because the Yanks overpaid for Grisham. That's really the backstory.

[Rich]

One last question and then we'll move off of baseball. But this has to do with any sport, not just baseball. How do you feel about when you hear in all sports where an agent's like, give me your final offer and then we're not coming back to you. Do you like that tactic? Or is it like, is that good or bad business? Where with Kyle Tucker, from what I understand, the Mets offered a significant amount of money, a bigger bonus, but the fact that he has an opt out after two for any team he was offered, the Mets actually offered him the most money. But that's why Steve Cohen thought Kyle Tucker was going to be a method. He goes to the Dodgers, gets glamored a little bit and he's like, I'm gonna be a Dodger. Do you like the idea of not going back to let the other team counter or do you like the whole like, I guess almost like you're on a game show, like, give me your final offer.

[Covino]

I'm always torn on those type of situations. That's why you have an agent, so that you could keep your reputation as a nice guy on whatever team you end up on. They're supposed to be fighting for you. So I'm always torn on that because there's a part of me that's like Bellinger has to want to make a decision that's keeping him holding off.

[Rich]

You heard that Danny, about Edwin Diaz? Timmy Trumpets who will now be played at Dodger Stadium. Break out the trumpets. That the Mets, who had had him since he, you know, got. He came over here years ago, was an all star for the Mets year after year. Edwin Diaz. The Dodgers gave an offer and his agent didn't even let the Mets get a chance to counter offer. It was like, all right, we're going with the Dodgers. I think the counteroffer is important.

[Covino]

Manny Munoz says across the spider verse part three crickets. Anyone? Anyone? Please let Cody stay as a Yankee. That's also from Manny 6475. Vince Garcia says it doesn't matter who the Yankees sign. The Dodgers own this S. Yeah, but that's the piece that's waiting to be dropped. Steve Lopez says Cody Bellinger. Come on. Been there, done that.

[Rich]

Well, big baseball, that's the final piece, the big baseball piece.

That's the biggest name out there left on the board.

[Rich]

And then, you know, you hear the bat, then all those big teams that we just mentioned have a backup plan. And that backup plan's name is Austin Hayes or Harrison Bader.

[Covino]

Yeah, Bader's.

Those are like the backup plan. So, hey, if you're a big baseball fan, we all just patiently wait for Cody Bellinger to decide. Probably just sitting around, sipping a cold brew from Starbucks, just sitting back, being like, today, the day at the side.

Know, just to, you know, give himself.

Yeah. And what does that mean exactly? And how do you feel about that? Players only meeting? Is that good or concerning? Does that work or not work? I find that to be concerning, to be honest. It's like all right, this is how desperate things are getting that there has to be a players only meeting. It also says that there's something else going on.

Well, is it. Is it saying that there's something the coach can't convey or is it more of a. Not a dis on the coach or manager, depending on the sport. Is it more of a.

[Covino]

Like, I like that they're doing something, but the fact that there's something that's causing this is concerning a bit.

It's like a couple who's arguing, who finally says, like art, we need to sit down with a therapist. Like, the players only meeting is like next step. Like.

You know, we try to rally.

That's all good, but it also implies that, yeah, that, yeah, there's. There's some heavy stuff going on.

So when you hear players only meeting, what does that mean to you? I find that to be both as. Because both could be true. That's. That's our go to. Because it is fact. It's good because you're trying to nip it in the bud. But it is also very concerning because it proves that there's something bigger going on.

I feel like the truth lies in what I'm about to say.

Much like the therapy example, like players only meeting is just. It's nothing. You know how many times a team I rooted for? You hear there's gonna be a players only meeting. You know what happens that players only meeting? You think like, oh, they must have got through to them and then they continue their losing weights. You have any players only meetings the Mets had this past year? I know that's my example because it's.

My team, but that doesn't mean it's going to work. But it's addressing it. Right. So that's the start of fixing the problem. You need to address the problem. There's no guarantee that it's going to be fixed or that it's going to work, but you have to address it.

On a station where the hall of Very Good is often talked about? Not one of the dudes hit the.500 home run mark. Not one of the dudes have 3,000 hits or more. And not one of the dudes have batted over.280 career. Like, are you kidding me? I think they're generational talents, but hall of Famers, I'm really not sure about.

Can'T say generational talent and then not say hall of Fame. So make up your mind. You think they're very good.

I think they're very great. But are they hall of Famers? I feel like we've lowered the criteria to get two really great players in. And I say that respectfully because I wish I had an ounce of their talent. And I love both players. They're both former Yankees as well. But, I mean, I don't know about this.

[Rich]

Well, go to Vegas. Robert shares that sentiment. What's up, Rob?

You said it perfect. Those two weren't perennial All Stars. They sure as heck aren't hall of Famers. You know what they did give, and I'll never take it away from them. Lots of great years. Carlos Beltran played 20 years. Andrew Jones played 17 years. They were both incredible. Like, we all wanted them on our team. There's no doubt about that. But if we have this standard, you know, that we're so strict on, and that's why Donnie, Baseball's not in. Can these guys get in?

[Rich]

Going to be Keanu or Al Pacino?

[Covino]

Be Keanu, I don't care. Now be Al Pacino because I was Keanu last time.

Have you guys ever thought about. Maybe you're neglecting to think about defense because both of those guys were gold gloves.

[Covino]

And why does Omar Viscale get no knots?

You sounded like John Harbaugh at his press conference.

[Rich]

But no, I think that Beltran would glide through the outfield like a gazelle. Andrew Jones was a gold Glover many a times. I just think you. If you tell the story of that 90s domination of the Atlanta Braves, Andrew Jones was just such a part of that. I agree with you that I wouldn't be crying if they weren't in. I think it's generous that they're in.

[Covino]

But you know, very generous, dude. And you mentioned defense, right?

[Rich]

Yeah.

[Covino]

And of course that's a major part of the game. There was no slicker fielder at short than Omar Vasquel as an infielder. Yeah. And this dude got what percentage he got 18% of the fall. So I mean, are they really counting defense that much? Because those numbers don't really add up to hall of Fame for me. And I know, I know how Rob Parker feels about it too.

He's not holding back any punches. He actually has a vote.

The next, the next two guys that didn't get in, that were just shy were Chase Utley and Andy Pettit.

[Covino]

Now here's the other thing, right? Stats that matter. I understand that Andy Pettit pitched for the. One of the best teams of the 90s in that era, right. He's era and he had steroids conflict that he says he used to recover quicker. The HGH. He had the most wins of the 90s. They always say if you can't tell the story of that decade or that generation without that player, you know, that's how you know if they're a Hall of Famer or not. Who had more wins than Andy pettit in the 90s?

[Rich]

Can you do me a quick?

[Covino]

Nobody.

[Rich]

Can you do me a quick. What's Pettit's career era? Because I look at it as a big game pitcher. Yeah. High threes. I think Felix Hernandez, multi time Cy Young Award winner. I believe King Felix won two.

[Covino]

And by the way, dude, I don't want to be a hater. I'm not hating. I'm just stating that these are my instincts here and I do congratulate them and their families. It's quite the honor. But we grew up with a standard. They didn't meet any of those standards offensively. Offensively, if you're. If it's the defense. 385 is Pettit's lifetime.

[Rich]

It's almost a 4 era, dude.

[Covino]

Yeah, but his postseason, his World Series.

[Rich]

Felix won one one Cy Young, but he's shy as well. I have to give a shout out to a lot of people aren't whole. We can get to Russell and Russell hit us up with a great idea. Remember he said the A's? He said he was listening to one of our old episodes on the pod.
