You are listening to the Dan Patrick show on Fox Sports Radio Hour 1 on this Wednesday. Dan and the Dan Edge Dan Patrick Show. Oh, we got a busy show coming up. Mike Greenberg Greeny is going to join us. He's got a book out. He'll stop by. Jimmy Rollins, former baseball mvp, three time all star and a TBS baseball analyst. We'll recap what we saw yesterday. And we got four games today. You got the M's and Tigers. That's 308 Eastern. Then it's Brewers, Cubs 508 Eastern. Then you have the Jays in New York again, 708 and the Phillies trying to hold off elimination in Los Angeles at 9:08. Stat of the day is always brought to you by Panini America, the official trading cards of this program. First hour brought to you by Rapid Radios, the official walkie talkie of the DP show. Push to talk nationwide LTE coverage. That means no subscriptions ever. Business owners stay connected with your employees anywhere. Visit rapidradios.com to get 60% off and free shipping. 8773 DP show operator Tyler sitting by. He'll take your phone calls. Seaton will come up with a poll question. Got a play of the all of that forthcoming. The Yankees on the brink. They were down five. They come back and win it. And Aaron Judge goes 3 for 4. Game tying home run and four runs batted in so far he's 7 for 11 in the series. The home run that he hit, I won't say it's impossible, but it's nearly impossible to turn on that pitch that is so inside it's out of the strike zone. And I like that you had people who were second guessing like why would you pitch to him? They didn't. He was down oh 2. They threw a great pitch inside that most mortals will strike out on and he turned on a 99 mile an hour fastball. That was the only other person I've ever seen that was Barry Bonds where it's inside. So inside. But he turned on it and kept it fair and hit a home run. Magical. Magical. It's going to be. So I know the votes are already in, but I don't think there's a wrong choice in mvp. And Cal Raleigh hit a home run last night, his 61st on the year. And I just, I think this is going to be one of those really, really close votes and it'd be a shame Yeah, I don't know if Cal Raleigh ever gets this chance again. Aaron Judge feels like we'll get this chance again. But this is one of those. Almost like Mike Greenwell, do you remember him with the Red Sox? And he lost out, I think, to Jose Canseco and then all the steroid stuff came out. And Mike Greenwell was a really good player, but he was never going to get a chance again. It's a magical season, a magical season for the team as well. And I had a baseball analyst who said, how's baseball and baseball fans going to react if you have the Blue Jays and the Mariners playing or you know that are we going to be like, oh, what are we doing with our small market teams here? And I'm like, I don't know why we get, we always come to this conclusion, like, oh, who's going to watch? Like, I don't care. You know, it's, you're getting to see some good baseball. You're getting to see some big stars. And if it's Seattle, it's a great story. Toronto is a great story as well. I know we love the big markets, but Mariners are up to one on Detroit and, you know, the Yankees down two one. You got the Dodgers, who might be able to sweep the Phillies coming up later on tonight, and then the brewers and the Cubs, kind of an oh, by the way, series. But the brewers favored in that series. Yes, Marvin, that's all.
Marvin
That always kind of boggles me when people talk about the small markets. Isn't it about big, big time stars? Because you have Cal Raleigh on one side and if it's the Blue Jays, you have George Springer And Vlad Guerrero Jr. Isn't that what you want? You want big stars so people can see them instead of just relying just on Dodgers and Yankees.
Dan Patrick
We don't do that in the NFL. Like, Green Bay is the smallest market. If Green Bay goes to the super bowl, nobody's going to complain. They're just not. And I think we get caught up in who's going to watch. I, you know, baseball struck gold last year with the Yankees and Dodgers, even though it wasn't a competitive World Series. You had the big markets, the big teams, but I, all I want to see is great, you know, we get to March Madness. I don't know, do you really care if Butler goes to a championship game or George Mason goes to the Final Four? I think if you get good matchups, that's all we're asking for. And a lot of times you can even have the big markets like we did last year and LA won four out of the five games.
Paulie
Yeah, Paulie, but I think the issue is, and I love. I don't care who's in the World Series, I'm going to watch. But when you have a World Series where it's like the Diamondbacks, it's almost like work for the casual fan. You have to learn the players, you have to learn the manager. When you have Yankees versus the Dodgers in the World Series, you know the stars already and you know the history of these franchises. It's like going into a movie where you know the entire cast as opposed to like an independent film. It's more work when there's a team like Toronto where you just know a few players.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, but if I go back to Arizona when they had Schilling and Randy Johnson, Luis Gonzalez and Mark Grace, we knew that team. We knew those stars. I think sometimes you'll get a smaller market or a less covered team. You know, Rangers, what, two years ago. And people probably didn't know much about the Rangers, but I, I don't get caught up in, you know, the ratings. The Blue Jays and Mariners both came into the American League in 1977 as expansion teams, and here they are on the cusp of moving on to the championship series. All right, Seaton poll question today, at least for the first hour.
Seaton
Let's see. You want to start? How about we start football wise? This one's from Marvin. After the Joe Flacco trade, what should the realistic expectations for the Bengals be? Division title, wild card, AFC championship game, or no playoffs?
Dan Patrick
Well, they have two wins. I would say, you know, playoff appearance, that, that, you know, Flacco obviously is nowhere near Joe Burrow, but you still have these offensive weapons and he will at least be able to take advantage of them far more than Jake Browning did. I would say wild card, because I don't know what the Ravens are going to do. We know what the Browns are going to do. And the Steelers are going to be a playoff team. I don't know if they're a great team. So if I'm a Bengal fan, I have to be realistic and say, can we get nine wins? Can we get 10 wins? And I'd say, yeah, I'd say that's realistic. By the way, we want to be fair to Dave Sims, the Yankee play by play voice. He was with us yesterday. And Fritzi, of course, had issues with Dave and his lack of enthusiasm on a Vlad Guerrero grand slam. Here is Dave Sims on the Aaron Judge home run last night. Here's the pitch.
Todd
High fly ball deep left field down the left field line.
Dan Patrick
It is off the fair pole.
Todd
Hey now, hey now. Pay now. Three run homer. Aaron Judge, this game is tied at six. Six.
Dan Patrick
Did you want him to sound like that for Vlad Guerrero?
Todd
That's what the fans wanted to hear. That was a huge moment for the Yankees.
Dan Patrick
Okay, but you wanted enthusiasm for Vlad Guerrero, the visiting.
Todd
I would understand if he didn't have quite that much enthusiasm for the other two. I could appreciate that for the Yankee listeners.
Dan Patrick
Nice call. That was tough to see though. It's down the line and that's where Judge isn't even leaving the batter's box. He's like, well, it's either a home run or it's foul. So I don't have to worry about. I gotta hustle into second base with a stand up double. But. All right, Seaton, back to our regularly scheduled programming. The poll question.
Seaton
Yeah, the other poll question is we haven't had one of these in a while. From Paul A bathroom can wait. Most poll BCW in sports right now or just in baseball? Maybe Judge otani Raleigh Other.
Dan Patrick
So bathroom can wait when they're at the plate.
Seaton
Yeah, they're at the plate and you really got to go to the bathroom. Like, you know what, I'm going to wait until after this at bat.
Dan Patrick
Well, Judge definitely. Judge, I don't know if Cal Raleigh is entered that picture. Maybe, maybe it's a, a temporary bathroom can wait for him. But Aaron Judge definitely, it just, I think just seeing him at the plate, somebody that big and I, I don't know who we had on this is years ago and Paulie was bringing this up that we were talking about tall guys who have long swings and you know, you're not going to be able to get around on that fastball. You know, that's big looping swing and But Aaron Judge has been so good at being selective and he doesn't, you know, there's pitches that he used to go for. Now he knows exactly what the strike zone is and that is the, I mean a credit to him because yes, as you get older, your swing is going to slow down, but you, you have to be able to somehow compromise what you're going to do at the plate. And I thought that you can't help, you can't help the pitcher by widening your strike zone. And that's what I think he did earlier in his career. Yeah, Paulie.
Paulie
Yeah. If you look at Aaron Judge after the age of 30, every year his strikeouts are going down and his Walks are going up. His eye is getting better. His stats after age 30 are better than his stats before age 30.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, it's impressive, though, when he comes to the plate and he's played a great series here. This is. This is what we wanted. This is what you want out of your MVP candidates. What else do we have, Seton?
Seaton
Yeah, we're throwing those two up right now as we speak. The Joe Flacco Flocko. And is it Flacco or Flacco?
Dan Patrick
I think it's Flacco.
Seaton
I think it's Flacco.
Paulie
Oh, I was gonna say you might have been right. Yeah, I like Flock.
Dan Patrick
I don't.
Seaton
He says Flaco.
Paulie
He does.
Dan Patrick
It's Joe Flacco. Yeah.
Seaton
Joe Flacco.
Dan Patrick
By the way, I think Paulie called this when the Browns were going to go to Dylan Gabriel and we wondered what. What was going to happen. I think it's more than giving too much credit.
Paulie
No, probably too much credit. I just remember talking about it. We were discussing why didn't the Bengals go after Russ Wilson when he got benched? And then we said as soon as Dylan Gabriel got to start, they should just ship Joe Flacco across the state.
Dan Patrick
Hmm. Yeah, I mean, it's interesting. You know, I'm sure. I'm probably sure that he would just drive down to Cincinnati, take, you know, three and a half hours or so and, you know, it's an upgrade going to Cincinnati over Cleveland, of course, my hometown. Yeah.
Paulie
Paul, now, if you're the Browns, you lived in the state. Dan, any chance you're helping out your cross state rival here? Or is it no danger, no, you.
Dan Patrick
No, you are helping them.
Paulie
Shouldn't do that.
Dan Patrick
Well, I think it also, this is what the Browns should have done to begin with. If you're going to have these young quarterbacks, let these quarterbacks have a chance to prove if they can play or not. In, you know, you got Flacco and maybe he did help these guys prepare. Now they've gotten to the point I just want to see if they can play because I don't want this to be a situation where at the end of the season, the Browns are going to go into the draft and take a quarterback and these kids didn't get a chance to really play. And Dylan Gabriel played pretty well in London. Maybe Shador Sanders gets a chance to play as well. And by the way, for everybody who said, oh, boy, there's a quarterback rich draft coming up, I don't know about that. Feels like every year it's that next year that quarterback draft. Oh, it's deep. I don't know if a quarterback's going number one overall this year. I get the feeling it'll be an edge rusher, but I don't know if these quarterbacks are great. Maybe we're still trying to figure out who's the Heisman Trophy candidate, the leading one. Yeah, Paul.
Paulie
It happens every couple years or maybe more than that. 2022, the first pick of the draft that was a quarterback was the 20th pick. Can he pick it out of Pittsburgh? And it was like Desmond Ritter, Malik Willis, and a couple years before that, I think it was, you know, like, it happens once in a while where there's just nobody goes early.
Todd
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
But it feels like every year we always talk about the next year. Like, oh, my gosh, there's a lot of quarterbacks there. I'm like, I don't know, because you have the Rams with two first round picks and the Browns with two first round picks. And, you know, Stafford's probably not going to play after this season. And the Brown situation, I mean, maybe they got a starting quarterback there, but now is when you find out instead of playing Joe Flacco.
Marvin
Yeah, Morv, There's a mock draft I'm looking at right now on CBS Sports. Mike Renner has a quarterback going number one overall. Do we want to guess who the quarterback is?
Dan Patrick
Does he play at Oregon?
Marvin
He does not.
Dan Patrick
Okay. Does he play at Indiana?
Marvin
He does.
Dan Patrick
Okay, quickly, Fernando Mendoza.
Marvin
Three hot weeks.
Dan Patrick
I still go back to Kirk Herbstream talking about Fernando Mendoza starting the season. Keep an eye on him, Fernando. And Indiana's played well. Yes, Paulie.
Paulie
Just remember, though, these mock drafts, the editors encourage you to put quarterbacks in the top 10. All over the place.
Todd
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. Nobody wants to, you know, click on a mock draft that's got an edge rusher out of Georgia. Sorry, I just don't. It's like, where. When's the first quarterback. It used to be running backs. Oh, I have. Let me see if I can find it. Yes, Marvin.
Marvin
I was gonna say, for the Mendoza family, don't get too excited because I'm sure, sure Doris Sanders was the number one pick in somebody's mock draft a year ago. Also.
Dan Patrick
I remember when we had Dion, he joined us at the super bowl and we were talking about, you know, where his son would and wouldn't go. And it almost felt like Dion thought that his son was going to go top five, not top five rounds, top five. And that, hey, there's certain teams we're going to steer clear of and then all of a sudden, what unfolded? I do have the NFL offensive Rookie of the Year odds. Updated by DraftKings I'm going to wait after the break. We'll take a break here. Hey sis, what if I could promise you you never had to listen to a condescending finance bro tell you how to manage your money again? Welcome to brand Ambition. This is the hard part when you pay down those credit cards. If you haven't gotten to the bottom of why you were racking up credit or turning to credit cards, you may just recreate the same problem. A year from now when you do feel like you are bleeding from these high interest rates, I would start shopping for a debt consolidation loan starting with your local credit union. Shopping around online looking for some online lenders because they tend to have fees and be more affordable. Listen, I am not here to judge. It is so expensive in these streets. I 100% can see how in just a few months you can have this much credit card debt and it weighs on you. It's really easy to just like stick your head in the sand. It's nice and dark in the sand. Even if it's scary, it's not going to go away just because you're avoiding it. And in fact, it may get even worse. We talked about this yesterday. The Arizona Cardinals head coach, Jonathan Gannon, and he had an altercation on the sidelines. And, you know, you can yell at your players, but if you put your hands on players, because players can't do that back to you. And the NFL fined him $100,000. Now, I don't know if it was the Cardinals or the NFL. It seems like that would be in house, but there were varying reports on who was fining him. But it was $100,000 for the incident that he had on the sidelines. Now, he did come out and apologize, and I think that's one of those. Hey, you might want to get ahead of this and apologize before people start to really look at this and you put your hands on one of your players. But $100,000. Jerry Jones. Jerry Jones got fined, and he apparently was thinking he was giving the thumbs up to Cowboy fans, but he ended up flipping off somebody. He gave the finger. Yes, Paul.
Paulie
Okay, let's play the game. Which fine is more proper? Because you would think putting your hands on a player and pushing them would be the $250,000 fine, and flipping the bird, which is just a gesture, no one's actually getting touched, would be the $100,000 fine.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, but it is an owner who's doing this.
Paulie
Yeah, but the act. And it shouldn't be the pockets of the person.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, well, you won the game, and you're the owner, as opposed to Jonathan Gannon lost a terrible. I mean, an unbelievable loss. And in the moment, and he was way too amped and should have been fine. But Jerry. Jerry's one of the faces of the NFL.
Seaton
But he's been given. He's been giving Cowboys fans the middle finger for years with that team. So what's the. I'm surprised this is the one that figuratively figured out.
Paulie
Figurative.
Dan Patrick
Okay. Yeah. But he. He was. He thought he was giving the thumbs up. And, I mean, it happens to me all the time. You know when my wife says, hey, you got that? And I go, yeah. And then. Oh, darn it. I flipped you off again, hon. Yeah. Yeah.
Paulie
Now, has precedent been set? If Jerry Jones goes double bird, is it half a million or Is it? The act is 250,000.
Dan Patrick
I think it's just the now. I don't know. Defender. Yeah, I don't know. But. But Jerry flip. I mean, you won the game too. You're flipping people off.
Paulie
He did address it. Jerry Jones, Dan. He actually talked about it yesterday. He said he was flipping off his own fans, not the opposing fans. There was a swarm of Cowboys fans, not jets fans. The entire statement was brimming. And he was trying to give them. He said like a thumbs up. How you doing? And he actually went. Instead of thumb, he went middle finger. That was his explanation.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Paulie
Your thoughts?
Dan Patrick
Yes, Todd.
Todd
Unless you have a carpal tunnel or some kind of problem where you need to see a doctor, where you can't control the digits in your hand. I don't know how you confuse the middle finger with the thumb. I just don't know how that happened ever.
Dan Patrick
Well, he is a 80 year old man, so maybe, maybe he has some problems with that, you know, some inflammation. Yes.
Seaton
Have you ever been in a situation where you're out in public or something and someone says, hey, what's up? And you say, good.
Marvin
You.
Seaton
You're like, wait, that didn't match at all. They didn't ask me how I'm doing. They asked, what's up? I should have said, nothing. What about you? But instead I said, good. It's the same thing. Just with your hands. It's the exact same thing. I kind of. I meant to give him. I went to give a thumbs up, but I gave a middle finger instead. It was weird.
Brown Ambition Host
I.
Seaton
Should I do a peace sign or a hang loose. Like I just messed that up. My bad. Hold on, let me recalibrate here.
Paulie
Yes, Paul, I'm with Seaton on this one. I think it could have been an accident because Jerry hasn't done this before. And the other day I was at the airport and the person at the gate said, have a good flight. And I said, you too.
Dan Patrick
You too.
Paulie
She wasn't flying anywhere. She was just standing.
Dan Patrick
Right?
Seaton
Exactly, exactly.
Paulie
And I went back, I was like. And I just had to go, you too.
Dan Patrick
Yes, Todd.
Todd
I've done that with good to see you versus good to meet you. Sometimes you meet someone for the first time. It's good to see you. You've never met them before and vice versa. That's kind of awkward as well.
Dan Patrick
I've done that. I've done that because I'll meet people. You know, I've been doing this for such a long time that you think you've seen somebody before, and then you go, hey, great to see you again. This first time we've met. Oh, okay. You look like somebody you know. Then you're like, scrambling. But no, I don't believe that. Jerry thought he was given the thumbs up and then he flipped off the Cowboy fans. Yes.
Todd
Todd, why can't that other person play along in that awkward situation? Why does that person have to say, it's the first time we met? I have a problem with that person, too. Why do they. Why do you have to bring it up to that person? It's the first time we met, so just play along. Good to meet you.
Dan Patrick
Good to see you.
Todd
It's close enough.
Dan Patrick
Okay. I don't want to. I don't want to go down this.
Todd
Road, make someone feel uncomfortable.
Dan Patrick
I've had people come up and say, do you remember me? I hate that because, hey, we met in 94. Where, like, I have no idea. And I, I'm sorry. You sure you don't remember? I. I don't. I don't think I do. I don't think I do. Okay, here. DraftKings has the offensive rookie of the year odds. Ameca Abuka of Tampa Bay. He is your clubhouse leader. Then it's Ashton Genty, Jackson dart, Tyler Warren. Those are your top four. And Abuka has been, you know, when you're, you got bragging rights that you're the best Ohio State receiver in the NFL. I mean, that's saying an awful lot. And what an incredible pickup for them with Tampa Bay to get him. Because these aren't those little dump off passes when Baker throws to a Buca. These are, these are big boy passes and catches. And he's been wonderful. So he is your NFL offensive rookie of the year right now, according to DraftKings. Yes, Paul.
Paulie
Yeah. Buka is fourth in the NFL and yardage this season and first in yards per catch.
Dan Patrick
And they're big plays too, you know, and you don't normally go to your rookie, you know, wide receiver that, you know, they got some injuries with their wide receivers, but still that's. It feels like when they're doing these fourth quarter comes comebacks. He is not afraid to go to him. Yeah.
Paulie
Paul, another bonus for a Buka is looking at his stats. I don't have any drops so far. He's also leading the league in catch percentage, like catches per target. I mean, that's, that's serious stuff.
Dan Patrick
Well, I think that Baker went to him seven times in Seattle and he had seven catches in Seattle. I, I think I, I have that right. I had a few phone calls here, Tim in Utah. Good morning. Tim, lead us off. What's mind.
Caller
Hey, good morning. 58185. I just wanted to point out, yesterday Fritzi was demanding that Patrick Mahomes tackle a monster of a man, Devin Lloyd running down the field. And then in the very next breath couldn't take a self tanning bet because he had to consult with his dermatologist first.
Todd
I'm just a dead end. I'm not a professional football player. They're really kind of apples and oranges. If I'm a football player, I got to do football things no matter what the situation is.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, Fritz, he's soft.
Todd
I don't have to get a tanning thing.
Dan Patrick
He doesn't want Patrick Mahomes to be soft. Is that right, Todd?
Todd
Yeah. I don't like what people say. Well, there's been other quarterbacks have gotten hurt doing that. You know, you can get hurt doing anything. You can get hurt driving your car. At any given time, any given play, you can get hurt. If you're constantly afraid of getting hurt, then you shouldn't be playing football.
Seaton
He's just as likely to get hurt playing Wiffle ball. You don't know.
Dan Patrick
We don't know. Pickleball. Yeah.
Seaton
What if he twists his ankle playing pickleball? We don't know.
Todd
It's a violent sport. Wiffle ball and the NFL, you got to suck it up. Don't play. Sit on your couch if you're worried about getting hurt.
Dan Patrick
David in Ohio. Hi, David. What's on your mind today?
Caller
Hey, Dan, I got a theory as to why Jerry Jones gave that. Gave the fans the finger. He was waving the fans up there in his ivory tower. And then one of the jets fans whipped out a Cowboys super bowl on VHS and flapped it in his face. He gave him the finger. I think that's what happened there. So thank you.
Dan Patrick
Oh, I see. Yeah. It has been a while since they've won a Super Bowl. Yeah.
Paulie
Paul, I am breaking down the video. Dan. We have it in context. He's waving to the fans. He's doing kind of a wave. And then he goes thumbs up to one group of fans. Then he points and does a quick middle finger to another group of fans. It does appear he's confused about what's going on.
Dan Patrick
Ah, I'm gonna guess. One group of fans said one thing that was complimentary, and maybe another group of fans didn't say something so complimentary. That's why it was a thumbs up. And then it was, hey, I'M gonna flip you off. Yes.
Todd
Todd, hold up your wallet instead of the middle finger if you want to stick it to anybody. It's like, I got billions of dollars. Nothing you can show me or an old VHS cover isn't going to do anything to me. But. So sit down, have your drink and take care of.
Dan Patrick
Thank you, Todd. Chad and Salt Lake. Hi, Chad. What's on your mind today?
Caller
Yeah, good morning, guys. Good to see you. Wanted to talk about the Mariners. As a lifelong fan and being a small market team, even though there's a 14th market in the country, there's some great storylines that they make it through. Just like you mentioned, Dan, there's Toronto and Seattle. If we get a Brewers Mariners series, that's huge because it's the Seattle Pilots versus the Seattle Mariners. If we get the Dodgers, it's an i5 series. New York, we've got the fact that Dave Simms spent the last 14 years as the Mariners play by play guy before going back home to New York. The only one I can't figure out a real tie in so far is Philly, and maybe it's the Philly fanatic versus the bear in the Moose, who knows? But I think there's some good, compelling stories if people get them out there. There's some great stories at the end happen to be lucky enough to make it onto the ALCs and the world Series, so.
Dan Patrick
All right. Well, thank you, Chad. Yeah. I don't know if those are storylines that you can sell nationally, but the people who get caught up and when I worked at the mothership, I remember, oh, we always thought about the ratings and covering something and how big's it going to be? When I worked at NBC, how many people are going to watch the Super Bowl? How many are going to watch the Olympics? Sunday Night Football? What are the ratings? It's just tv people. Because the fans, you either watch it or you don't. I don't know if you go, okay, sit down. Let me, let me explain to you why you got to watch the World Series with these two teams. Either do you don't either a sports fan or you're not. And I think that we do. We're very. We're more selective than we used to be, but we have the opportunity to be selective now. You know, back when I was growing up, you had three channels. What are you watching? I guess I'm gonna watch, you know, that playoff game or that, that, you know, World Series or that's. I mean, of course you were watching it. Now it's you know, take a peek. I'll watch a little bit of it. I'll see if it's any good.
Marvin
Yes, Marvin, that happened in NBA Finals this past season with Indiana and Oklahoma City. Like, oh, who's going to watch it? You're like me, like either you're a fan or you're not.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, I mean that was my approach. It's like, are you. Nobody's going to watch this. I am. Like, I don't care. Yeah.
Paulie
Paulie, if you were Rob Manfred in Major League Baseball, would you rather have the teams you want or seven games? Because like last year was Dodgers, Yankees, but it went five couple. Last time it was a seven game series was 2019 Nationals versus Astros and went seven. I think I'd prefer seven with lackluster teams financially.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. And I don't know the math on that, but it, you know, can you get more money advertising with five games with New York and LA than you can if it's, you know, a smaller market team? If it's the. The brewers against the Blue Jays. I got it. I don't know. I was there for the Phillies when they played Toronto. In Toronto it's spectacular series when the Blue Jays won it. Joe Carter. Yes, Todd.
Todd
But if it's, if you're looking at ratings on any way, shape or form, if it's major markets, a lot of people are more likely to maybe watch all the games. If it's smaller markets and maybe you're tuning into a game six or a game seven. So I don't know how the math works on that. But you may only be tuning in to game seven in smaller market as opposed to every game of the big market.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, because this was a five game series last year with the Yankees and the Dodgers. It wasn't competitive, but you did have big stars that people were probably tuning in for. But once again, I never get caught up in is anybody going to watch this? Does anybody care?
Paulie
Yeah, Paulie, I'm looking at Sports Business Journal from last year and right before they thought there might be a sweep with Dodgers, Yankees. Fox would have lost $140 million if it was a sweep every game on Fox. Fox's profit was a little over $40 million, $44 million per game in ad sales revenue. So by not having games six and seven, Fox lost $98 million. It's all prepaid. The ratings are about next year's rates, not this year's profit.
Dan Patrick
Let's see Harry in Chicago. Hi, Harry. What's on your mind?
Caller
Hello again, everybody.
Dan Patrick
Hey, Dan.
Caller
I love listening to your program. It's way more than about sports. I'm curious, did you have a favorite broadcaster for baseball growing up?
Dan Patrick
Of course. Harry Carey was my favorite broadcaster growing up.
Caller
Oh, but, Dan, there's something about baseball where you. You just break open a beer and watch the game. And as I say, from one broadcaster to another, I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy.
Dan Patrick
Thank you, Harry.
Caller
I want to thank you and the Danettes for what you've done to your bodies. Yeah. Hey, take it easy, Harry. You guys have. It's real, man. It's real. I love the program. Keep it going. Holy cow.
Dan Patrick
Thank you, Harry. I don't want to go to another one of these. I remember meeting Harry Carey, and I went to a Cubs game, and I was down on the field, and I asked PR person with the Cubs, I said, you know, I'd love to say hello to Harry. And he said, okay. And I was still on the field. Harry comes down out of the broadcast booth. This is. They're taking batting practice. And I was so honored. He came down and I said I was going to come up and see you. And he was very complimentary. He said, you got to come up. So came up during the game, got to watch him do a little bit of, you know, the Cubs game. And it's one of those where you go, that's pretty cool. You know, honored that Harry would come down and say, hello.
Todd
Yes, Todd, I did not have a great experience with Harry Carey. Real quick story. Many years ago, I called. I played a little hotel bingo, as we like to call back in the day before, there were aliases, and they'll ring hotel rooms. So I was in.
Dan Patrick
Explain that I was in la.
Nicole Garcia
Yeah.
Todd
You call. You're trying to get a guest on the show, on the radio, and you'll find out what hotel they're staying at, and you'll ask for the players and managers. And for some reason back then, the front desk would put you through without asking. There's no. They're not listed under an alias name. So I asked for Harry. It just wasn't set up in advance. I called the room, and Harry Carey answered, and he's like, call me back in an hour. I'm having breakfast. This was at a. In la. The Cubs were playing the Dodge in la. So I called him back, and exactly. Now, I was just getting started in the business, and he's like, are you the guy that called? And I was having breakfast and I told you to call me Back and you never called me.
Marvin
I.
Todd
Well, you told me to call you back in an hour. You're having breakfast. It's exactly 60 minutes later. Hell with you. And he slammed the phone down. That's my only experience ever with Harry Carey.
Dan Patrick
It was the problem. You were him.
Todd
Well, I shouldn't be calling randomly the hotels. I should have set it up with TPR number one. But he said, call me back in an hour. I called him back in exact an hour that he would do the show, and we were promoting him. Are you the guy?
Dan Patrick
I'm sitting here waiting for your call. You didn't call me, but I. Hell with you.
Todd
Like, what was that?
Dan Patrick
Kenny in North Carolina. Hi, Kenny.
Caller
What's up, dp?
Dan Patrick
Hey, Ken, man.
Caller
I wanted to first just give a shout out to Seaton. Saw your post last night. Just stoked for you and your family on your son's opportunity, and I'll be following along, but I had to just call. And I want to give a comment on Todd's take when it comes to who should be tackling and who should not be. I recall a Eddie Bauer photo shoot some time ago when he graciously, like, fell to the ground and then was out for 48 days. Rib injury. So I feel he's the last person that should be giving takes on tackling in the NFL.
Dan Patrick
All right, Kenny. Yes, Todd.
Todd
I would look at it the other way. I was brave enough to in a meaningless game, and I, you know, I didn't damage my ribs, but I severely bruised some ribs. And then we had to fly all the way home across the country a couple of days later. Might have even been the next day that we were flying home. And, you know, I didn't sit out. I played. I wasn't wearing any equipment or shoulder pads or rib pads. So I think that's actually something in my favor, what he just said.
Dan Patrick
No, it's incredibly heroic. Incredibly. Yes, Paul.
Paulie
We were throwing the ball around at 1/4 speed of actual gameplay, and Fritzi tried to tackle Seaton casually. He went down, and Fritzi, not going to the hospital, just diagnosed himself with severely bruised ribs.
Todd
I had trouble breathing in my seat. 36D or whatever I was in. It was really, really hurting, so I might say I broke ribs, but I definitely hurt myself, but I went out that I played, and this is what happens. You got to play, though. Football.
Dan Patrick
Once again, heroic.
Todd
It's football. Get out there and do. Do your job.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Let's take a break. More phone calls coming up. Mike Greenberg on his new book coming up next hour. Also, Jimmy Rollins, the former All Star. He will join us as well. Hey sis, what if I could promise you you never had to listen to a condescending finance bro tell you how to manage your money again? Welcome to Brown Ambition. Shopping around online looking for some online lenders because they tend to have fewer fees and be more affordable. Listen, I am not here to judge. It is so expensive in these streets I 100% can see how in just a few months you can have this much credit card debt. When it weighs on you, it's really easy to just like stick your head in the sand. It's nice and dark in the sand. Even if it's scary, it's not going to go away just because you're avoiding it. And in fact it may get even worse. Yo mi tio de ultra madre mis hermano des are the table just getting y' all ready for that bad buddy real quick. So I had a question. DP between the Heisman race being so bad, no standout plays in NC2A and the MVP going back and forth. Josh Allen, Jared Goff, Danny Dimes, maybe harder. Race to call. And another question. I'm headed to Scottsdale old man birthday trip. Allow myself to eat meat once every year on my birthday. Any suggestions for a great stake in the Scottsdale area and best golf course out there?
Dan Patrick
Well, the best golf course I don't. Because you won't be able to get on a couple of these golf courses because they're private. I, I don't. I don't have any recommend recommendations for either one. With that.
Todd
Yes, Todd, Isn't everything called Camelback something just like peach trees to Atlanta. Scott scales very big on camelback things. Maybe there's a Camelback resorts golf course.
Paulie
Yes, Paulie, there's one called Greyhawk. I think it's public, not cheap, but it's high end.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. Yeah. There. There's so many golf courses out there. As far as steakhouses. I don't know that.
Paulie
Yeah, Paulie, of course there's a Ruth Chris in Scottsdale. Always hard to say.
Dan Patrick
Well, well, you. You combine the. Of course.

MJ in Florida. Hi mj. What's on your mind?
Caller
What's up DP and Dan. That's how you guys doing today?
Dan Patrick
We're great.
Caller
So I'm not a Jerry Jones fans by no means. I'm sure he's got plenty of haters out there. But Deaton said something that sparked me on my thought on when you see somebody or meet somebody, whether it's whatever and you go in for the handshake, but they go fist pump or they go hug and then you know what, what's the. What's the. What's the 1, 2, 3. Is it you first try the handshake, then go to fist pump or the hug.
Dan Patrick
I become more of a fist pumper. Like I'll just give you knocks. I just have my hand out so you see it right away. And, and Now, I've had people where they kind of swallow up your fist in there and. And then it gets like, weird. But I, I try to come at you, you know, not like it's a Tyson punch, but yeah, right there. How about some knocks there, man? Especially if I'm at an event where I'm going to be shaking a lot of guys hands, I'd rather just do a preemptive strike and just go, how about some, some knocks there? Yes, Marvin.
Marvin
I think for knucks for me is every time I see somebody daily, like, if I see you guys, you give somebody dab. Now if I haven't seen you in a while, say if it's the people from Iheart or whatever, see somebody you see at the super bowl once a year, I'm not going to dap you up because somebody's going to be like, oh, so you just gave me nux. I haven't seen you in 360 days. Yeah, so you just give them, right?
Dan Patrick
Yeah, there, there's a time, but there's also. It's you. You go in, you shake their hand, bro hug, tap, tap, tap on the back. Correct. It's three taps. Sometimes it's weird, though, if you're meeting somebody and you don't really know them, but they, they want adapt, you know, they want to bring you in and then tap, tap, tap.
Todd
Yes, Todd, can you dap up a woman? And aren't you concerned at all about being, like, coming across as a germaphobe, regardless of the gender that you're dapping them up? I know you kind of alluded to that.
Dan Patrick
Like, I'm gonna much rather dap up female than over hug.
Paulie
Over hug.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Todd
Well, that's how I avoid the whole awkwardness. If you hug everybody, I gotta worry, is it a dap? Is it a handshake? Is it a high five? If you're hugging everybody and they're expecting.
Dan Patrick
That, then you go, yes, Paul.
Paulie
I like the crisp handshake shoulder pattern because it's kind of almost like a business setting. You're not hugging a person that you work with. Crisp handshake and then the nice little.
Dan Patrick
Shoulder pad, like your friend Mike in Tennessee. Hi, Mike. What's on your mind today?
Caller
Hey, guys. How's it going?
Dan Patrick
Great.
Caller
You guys hear me okay?
Dan Patrick
Yeah. Got you, Mike. All right.
Caller
Okay, just in reference to the Jerry Jones mishap, and the last caller kind of was talking about the same thing. So, you know, and I, I'll give the guy the benefit of the doubt. He may have been, you Know, meaning to wave instead of flipping people off or. Or however it was. And I like Seaton's take on it. His theory about things we repeatedly say, like in. In return to a, you know, a superficial salutation like, hey, how you doing? Have a nice day, and you accidentally say, good, how are you?
Dan Patrick
I.
Caller
That makes sense. And those responses, we say a ton, a lot. Like, there's a couple of them we use a lot. Just like the fist pump. The guys last guy was saying, you either shake or fist pump or dap.
Dan Patrick
Hold on, hold on, Mike. There's a big difference in thumbs up or I'm gonna give you the bird. It's not one of those awkward, hey, how are. How are you? Like, hey, you know, where are you going? Have a great day. It just. Jerry probably saw somebody group said something nice, and then there was another group that probably didn't say something nice, and he flipped him off. Yes. Todd.
Todd
The great comedian George Carlin once said, if you're saying goodbye to a bunch of people at a party and there's a certain standard thing that you say, it gets very angry. Okay, take it easy. Okay, take it easy. Okay, take it easy. Okay, take it easy. Okay, take it easy.
Dan Patrick
It's like the flight attendant, you know, when you're all departing, you know, don't they always say the same thing? You know, have a great day. Have a great day. Have a great day. Great day. Great day. Great day. I don't think for a moment that Jerry was like, man, I got confused, you know, because I love to, you know, give the thumbs up to everybody. Yes, Paulie.
Paulie
It would be funny if he just admit what he did. He's getting the 250 either way. He's losing 250 either way. Just say, hey, jets fans are yelling, me, I gave him the bird.
Dan Patrick
Well, is he going to appeal this? Because if he is, then I'll believe that it was a mistake. If he's just going to swallow 250, I'm like, okay. Because if I did something accidentally and I say, the commissioner, hey, man, I do this a lot, and I'm, you know, I'm sorry, but I didn't mean to flip anybody off. I was going to give them thumbs up. Mike Greenberg, get up. Thumbs up. He'll join us. Coming up in about 25 minutes from now. Hour two on this Wednesday, right after this. THE DAN PATRICK SHOW
Hour 1 – "Aaron Judge HR Was Magical, Jerry’s Bird"
October 8, 2025 | iHeartPodcasts and Dan Patrick Podcast Network
This episode of The Dan Patrick Show focuses on two primary topics: the stunning performance of Aaron Judge and the Yankees’ dramatic playoff comeback, and the humorous saga of Jerry Jones’ accidental (or not) middle finger gesture to fans. Dan and the Danettes blend insider sports analysis with their signature humor, touching on MLB playoff narratives, quarterback trades, the MVP race, and the difference between "small market" and "big market" excitement. The segment also includes lively banter about the nuances of sports etiquette, fines in professional sports, and good old-fashioned awkward social interactions.
The episode is classic Dan Patrick Show: irreverent and insightful. The Danettes’ camaraderie shines through, with plenty of off-the-cuff jokes and digressions into social etiquette, sports broadcasting, and awkward fan moments. Dan continually ties the laughter back to smart, informed sports commentary, making the episode accessible for both die-hard and casual sports fans.
The hour is a balance of serious baseball talk—especially Aaron Judge’s extraordinary postseason form—and the lighter side of sports, from owners’ PR gaffes to ongoing ribbing between Dan and his crew. The Danettes prove that sports radio can be both analytical and laugh-out-loud funny, while always keeping the big moments and bigger storylines front and center.
