Listen to Energy Line with Nate and jsb on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. You are listening to the Dan Patrick show on Fox Sports Radio. It's hour one on this Tuesday. Dan and the Dan Etch Dan Patrick show live from New Orleans. The gang's all here, ready to go. The minister of humor, Todd Fritz, Marvin, the Prince Seaton, Paulie, yours truly, the backroom guys and the great folks here at the exchange in New Orleans. All right, we have poll questions. We got our play of the day stat of the day. We've got some great guests. Charles Barkley will join us a little bit later on. Cooper Manning of the Manning family, the father of Arch Manning will stop by. Brady Quinn from Fox Sports and Albert Brear, the Monday morning quarterback as we get an update on Miles Garrett Cooper cup where he could be headed. And do the New Orleans Saints have their head coach? He's in New Orleans. He's just not with the New Orleans Saints. So we'll talk to Albert coming up in a little bit. Your phone call is always welcome operator Tyler sitting by. 877-3-DP Show Stat of the day is always brought to you by Panini America. The official trading cards of this program. First hour brought to you by Keeper's Heart, a new and unique style of whiskey that combines the best of Irish and American whiskey, creating a smooth character of Irish whiskey and the bold flavors of American whiskeys. If you're a whiskey fan, try it. And of course, drink responsibly. I had a few items here yesterday. We spent a lot of time, first couple of hours talking about the fallout from the Luca AD trade and then all of a sudden we're hit with a football bomb. Not as I guess explosive is what happened with Luka and ad. But Miles Garrett wants out of Cleveland. Now here's the preeminent defensive line defensive player, former defensive player of the year, and he wants out of Cleveland. Now you can add some intrigue or mystery to this because there's a report that Deion Sanders doesn't want his son Shador Sanders to go to the Cleveland Browns. We certainly doesn't want them to go to the Cleveland Browns. If you're going to have Miles Garrett exit stage left. Now this is what I would suggest. If the Cleveland Browns on the clock at with the second pick overall and you are thinking about taking a quarterback or maybe you're not, then maybe you say to the LA Raiders or the Las Vegas Raiders. You can have our draft pick and you can take Shador Sanders, which is where Shador. Either the Giants or the Raiders, he probably would like to end up. But a lot of time before we have the draft and, you know, all the gamesmanship that goes on there. But that possibility. But Miles Garrett, the Browns say they're not trading him, but that certainly is a big deal. And you have, you know, GMs down here, you have team members down here, so you're going to get a lot of people talking to a lot of people during super bowl week. All right, Seaton, what's the poll question for the first hour of the program? Well, we got a bunch of options. We might as well start with the Browns. Paul just sent this one over. The Browns are the a total mess or in a great position for the future? Okay. Both, I think.
Paul Pabst
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. I mean, if you get rid of desean Watson's contract, maybe you eat it for that last year you got some draft picks and maybe you say, all right, let's start over, we trade Miles Garrett. It's just I don't trust the organization to do things right. That's the problem is if this was in the hands of another organization, you might go, all right, get. They'll figure this out. There's a reason why these teams are usually bad teams. You know, it's systemic that you can trade, you can have different people, but you still have sort of the front office, same ownership there. That's what would worry me with the Cleveland Browns. You still have the same ownership group there. I go back to when the Browns had all those draft picks, first round draft picks, and everybody's like, all the Browns, man, they're reloading. They're going to be great. Well, they had all those draft picks. They just weren't any good with their drafting. And they never got any better. You know, Brady Quinn was part of that draft where I think they got Joe Thomas, who became a Hall of Famer. But, you know, you're drafting Brandon Whedon, you know, a defensive back out of Oklahoma State. What was his name? He went ninth overall.
Paul Pabst
Justin Gilbert.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. Yeah. That didn't go well. Yes. Yeah. There have been so many drafts for that team that they had, say, two picks in the first round. You're like, man, they are all set up. They just got their quarterback and their star wide receiver. They just got their quarterback and their star whoever. And yeah, crazy. None of those has worked out. Yeah, Johnny Manziel, I mean, you can run down the list here. Yeah.
Paul Pabst
Paulie, if you go back to 2012, what Seton was saying, Trent Richardson, round one. Brandon Weeden, round, round one. Didn't work out. Barcavis Mingo, 2013, 2014. Justin Gilbert, Johnny Manziel, round one. Danny Shelton, 2015. Corey Coleman, wide receiver, 2016, no dice. And then they stumbled into miles Garrett in 2017. They couldn't screw that one up.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. Although there was a knock on Miles Garrett that, like, he was too much of a Renaissance man or something. And like, he. He quoted poetry or something, you know, it was like, I don't know, you're going to trust this guy to be a tough guy. And I'm like, that's the last I'm worried. This guy reads. Oh, my God. I'm not drafting him. He can't be tough.
Paul Pabst
Socially conscious.
Dan Patrick
He knows who, Keats and, you know, Throw Long, Longfellow or any of these other people. He just said the word prose. Oh, my God. And not like talking about athletes, but, like, talking about text.
Paul Pabst
Look at his spelling.
Dan Patrick
It was media night last night, and the local fans, and they had a band in there, you know, it was great, you know, but these are savvy teams when it comes to these questions. Patrick Mahomes is ready for it, whatever question you have. He's good. Yes, he. You know, it's funny. I was in the van today on the way over, and it's like, it's crazy how things change, you know? But I was looking around the van and I was like, oh, my gosh. There's not a single person in here that's hung over today. How did that. Wait, are we growing up? Yeah, hold on a second, fellas. What's going on here? Well, I got some back room guys that I can introduce you to. I think we've passed the baton to those fellas. Yes, I know. Look, they jumped in the pool in their underwear first night. So I'm like, all right. Like, I'm okay with it. We didn't cause a disturbance and nobody complained. But they went out last night again. Went gambling, lost again. And I can hear it in Dylan's voice that they had some beverages as well. Yes, Paul, I did go to media night last night.
Paul Pabst
Did not live it up, but went to media night.
Dan Patrick
And Patrick Mahomes.
Paul Pabst
Dan gets asked some variant of the Tom Brady legacy question, like, every fourth question. And then they mix in a baseball question, they mix in a basketball question. But he was totally prepared for every Brady question.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, here's a couple of the. Patrick, I like this one, though, he. He was asked about Luka Doncic and the trade from the Dallas Mavericks. Yeah, man, it's. It's tough, you know, because I feel like I've watched Luka since. I've watched him since he was 18 years old. I remember going to a practice and it was Dirk and Luka and seeing his maturation and how great of a basketball player he's became. It's been fun to watch. And as a Dallas fan, it hurts me, but I'm happy for him that he's gonna be able to go out there and be in LA and get to try to achieve his dream of winning a championship. He did so much not only for the basketball team, but for the city of Dallas. So I'll always be appreciative of those years, but I'm excited for the Mavericks moving forward and the guys they brought in. He loves being asked about this. He was asked about his baseball career. You know, he'll wax poetic about that and be like, oh, good, I don't have to talk about Brady. Or Yes. All of a sudden you allow a superstar athlete to also be a sports fan. They're like, whoa, this, you're right, I do watch basketball too. Thank you. Yeah, he's got opinions on things that we do too. And Todd always leans into the Patrick Mahomes impersonation. I just don't know how the chemistry is going to work between Luke and LeBron. I'm very curious. Pretty good.
Paul Pabst
I guess they'll be all right.
Dan Patrick
Yes. Paul.
Paul Pabst
So if you listen to Mahomes, last night he again got asked about Brady a few times and he has a three step process for answering the question. He compliments Tom Brady. He says he has no control over his legacy. And then he says he's just focused on this weekend's game. It was 1, 2, 3, out. Every time he was asked about Brady.
Dan Patrick
Is it a stretch to say the Kansas City Chiefs are Drake.
Paul Pabst
Current Drake.
Dan Patrick
Drake May Drake. Drake the musician, the artist that all of a sudden everybody turned on Drake here. I don't know if that makes the Eagles Kendrick Lamar, but you know, when you think about it, the Chiefs came along and got rid of the Patriots. That's what people wanted. Like, can somebody get rid of them? Thank God. Oh, Mahomes, he's awesome. And Tyreek Hill and Kelsey, this is great. Andy Reid won a Super Bowl. Now all of a sudden it's like, can somebody knock these guys off? And it feels like, wasn't Drake at the top of his game? He came from nowhere Rapper from Canada. And we're like, oh, this guy, man, this is great. And then all of a sudden, the world turned on him. And it's funny. Yeah, because Drake is still, like, the most streamed artist every year, you know, so people are listening to his songs a ton, and at the same time, people kind of hate him. Well, the Grammy reaction to Kendrick Lamar winning and everybody singing that song that has to do with Drake is really kind of mind blowing. I can't imagine if Drake is watching that. Was he there at the Grammys? He better not. I highly doubt he was gonna. Not when the whole crowd's singing a minor. Oh, no, thank you. My God. I know, but imagine he's. He's watching, and all of a sudden that comes on and everybody stands up, everybody's singing. It just feels like the Kansas City Chiefs, that's where we are with them. Like, we're. We're tired of the Chiefs. And, you know, even Travis Kelsey was talking about that. Do we have Kelsey? He kind of addressed the, like, what's the deal? Like, why does everybody not like the Kansas City Chiefs? Where will I be in three years?
Paul Pabst
Oh, man, I don't know. Hopefully still playing football. I. I love. I love doing this. I love coming into work every day, and, you know, I still. I feel like I still got a lot of good football left in me. But we'll see. We'll see what happens. I. I know I've been setting myself up for other opportunities in my life, and that's always been the goal. Knowing that football only lasts for so long. You got to find a way to get into another career, into another, you know, profession. And I've been doing that in my off seasons, but for the most part, I plan on being a Kansas City chief and playing football.
Dan Patrick
Where will I. All right. I don't see him playing three years, but he did joke about, like, why does everybody hate the Kansas City Chiefs? I think this. You know, could I see a scenario where he retires after this? I could. You know, he's got his podcast with his brother, and he's going to have a lot of offers to do media, his relationship with Taylor Swift. I don't know if he wants to go out this way. See, it's hard to walk away from this. We always talk about what's the perfect scenario. Well, if you win, you walk away. Well, if you win, then you go, God, we could do it again. John Elway had to retire. They won, and they were like, what a perfect way to go out. Well, John couldn't play anymore. Physically wasn't able to. Travis Kelsey can still play. He could be used like Gronk was late in his career with the Patriots, where it was, hey, you don't do anything during the regular season. Just be great during the postseason. And maybe that's what Kelsey is or will be here. But I, I don't know if you know how long he wants to play and if you're looking at numbers, he's not going to catch Tony Gonzalez. But I think Travis is probably going to be recognized as the best tight end of all time. Yeah, Paulie, I was with you.
Paul Pabst
I thought if Travis Kelce and the Chiefs won, he would retire quickly because he's got so many opportunities. But he's making so much money off the field, he could give the Chiefs like a two year discount, whatever the veterans minimum is, or a couple million bucks to play. I don't think Gronk made that much, but it propelled his brand for two more years. And like you said, it's a 50, 50 shot where he gets another ring after this year.
Dan Patrick
What other poll questions are we considering? First hour seed.
Paul Pabst
I think we're going to put up.
Dan Patrick
A Travis Kelsey one too. If the, if you were Travis Kelsey and the Chiefs win the super bowl this year, would you retire or keep it rolling. Okay. All right. 877-3DP Show Email Address DP dan patrick.com Twitter Handle @DP Show still not a lot of information about the why Luca was traded. What I hate to see is people in the Mavericks organization are covering the Mavericks leaking information about Luca. Luca was this problem, his weight, was it drinking? You know, he didn't fit in with the culture. Do you want to spend that kind of money on him? Well, the Lakers did. So, you know, this is one of those, one of these franchises to say they won this deal has to win a championship here probably in the next three to five years. If you're Dallas the next two years, you have to win a championship. And even then your GM could still get fired in three or four years from now, even if you want a championship this year. And then all of a sudden things went south because Anthony Davis couldn't play or Kyrie wanted out. I mean, you're going to be looking at what's going to happen with this gm, his future there. But with what the Lakers did, the Lakers were able to, you know, they hit the reset button. And I thought because of that, you have the money, you got star power, and that's what Los Angeles is all about. You got star power. And it allows LeBron to defer to, you know, Luca. And Luca can learn from LeBron. I think that's the most important part of this is now Luca can see that's how you become a professional, and that's how you can play for 20 years, conditioning and wanting, you know. But people, I think, misinterpreted the off season for Luca. He did play basketball in the off season. He played Olympic basketball. It's not like, you know, he was on the beach just pounding beers. Now, he might have been at some point, but he was still playing basketball. Yes. And then they make his weight out to be 275. When he got off the plane, he didn't look 275.
Paul Pabst
Well, I saw that video after Marvin referenced it. He was wearing all black hoodie sweatshirts, head to toe. It was a little Manny Ramirez. Ish. Remember when Manny would go baggy and you couldn't tell what was under there?
Dan Patrick
I couldn't tell what was under. I think it's more like Denzel in Equalizer. Yes. Yeah.
Paul Pabst
You can't tell what's going on.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, Like Denzel looks out of shape, you know, with all black there.
Paul Pabst
Still lighting people up, though.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, he is. And so. So is Lucas. Yeah. 1.5 seconds. He's broken your arm and stolen the gun. You're like, whoa, how did that guy do that? Wasn't it always, like 10 seconds? They had 10 seconds with Denzel. 30. Yeah. Oh, 30. Yeah. Oh. It's like, all right, click. Yeah. You see the watch?
Paul Pabst
Yeah. If you're from eastern Europe and you see Denzel, check his watch. I'd run for my life.
Dan Patrick
All right, we'll take a break. We'll come up with our poll question. Your phone calls are always welcome. We'll get to those. Podcasts and the National Hockey League, and.
Dan Patrick
I'm paired up with one of my favorite, the always quotable Nate Thompson.
Paul Pabst
I wore nine NHL sweaters, and I have story after story to share. And believe it or not, I have plenty to say, and not just about hockey.
Dan Patrick
Believe me, he does. Energy Line with Nate and JSB is the name of the podcast, and it's going to be. Well, it's going to be quite the ride. We're officially linemates, Nate. We're the energy line.
Paul Pabst
We'll have plenty of folks join us. Current players, some of my former teammates, hall of Famers, and wait till you see some of the connections that Julie has. She has quite the Rolodex.
Dan Patrick
Okay. We'll lean into Nate's playing experience and tap into our interests away from hockey and try to do what energy lines are supposed to do, provide an emotional boost. How do you feel about all that, Nate?
Paul Pabst
I'm vibing, Julie. I'm ready to roll.
Dan Patrick
Listen to Energy Line with Nate and JSB on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. We weren't able to bring a studio audience in to watch the show, and a lot of people have asked about that. We're at a great place for pickleball, the exchange in New Orleans. And the Danettes, they decided that they wanted to have a match coming up, and it's going to be front row, back row. So it's. It's Marvin and Paulie versus Fritzi and Seton, and they're going to play later on today. And I had the odds to win the match here, so Seaton and Todd right now are favored. Seaton and Todd are favored. Todd, yesterday, banging around a little bit, and you. You had some. You had some skill, but I enjoyed it.
Paul Pabst
You could.
Dan Patrick
You, of course, played tennis in high school.
Paul Pabst
I was back up to the second doubles. So if the last player on second doubles was hurt or sick or whatever, they might give me the chance to get out there.
Dan Patrick
That would make you the third.
Paul Pabst
I don't think there was third doubles. It was like, you sit there and we'll let you know if everybody else can't play, you know, and then they're actually.
Dan Patrick
I'm not even joking. Some kid pulled up, like, in a.
Paul Pabst
Wheelchair from one of the other high schools, and he's like, you know, and they didn't even guarantee me I was going to play in that match. I was like, we may go to you here, so warm up, because you got. You got Fred. Fred over there from Lafayette High School.
Dan Patrick
In the wheelchair areas. Oh, that. Okay. All right. You know what's funny is that for, like, the last almost 20 years, we've done nothing but make fun of Todd's alleged tennis career until today, where it's like, well, yeah, but Todd played tennis, so of course he's going to be good. Yeah. Wow. All of a sudden, Todd's a tennis player. Before that, he's a guy who never played sports at all.
Paul Pabst
After I shared the story.
Dan Patrick
It might be a pickup now. Yeah. No, no, no. You're favored. Well, Todd is a tennis player, but I explained him.
Paul Pabst
I was on the tennis team, and I got a couple of trophies based on what everyone else accomplished.
Dan Patrick
I watched the athleticism of the other guys. I think you're ahead of the game.
Paul Pabst
I am battling some plantar fasciitis. I don't want to make excuses, but both my heels hurt a lot.
Dan Patrick
What injury will be sustained first? I got. The odds are knee, Achilles, or ankle, hamstring, hip, arm, slash, elbow. I don't really care for this one. Gotta admit, odds to score. First point, Seaton, you're the. The big winner there. I'll take that player to miss the ball or hit the ball out of play or into the net the most. Congratulations, Paulie.
Paul Pabst
Yeah, I'm going to call that one.
Dan Patrick
Over. Under, excuses, complaints in the match. Four and a half. Oh, I'm going over with that. But these are the odds. The backroom guys came up with the odds. We've already had that in just this segment. We're not even playing yet. We're at at least five. Yes. Todd. Their chair, ump or rep.
Paul Pabst
I didn't notice that. I was watching other people play. They were very into their pickleball, and.
Dan Patrick
I guess it's just kind of gentlemen's.
Paul Pabst
Rules, as far as, you know, if there's an argument about a call. Yeah, they just kind of work it out amongst themselves.
Dan Patrick
I'm going to be the headlinesman. Yes. Yes. There was a moment yesterday where we were practicing a little bit, and it took, like, 30 seconds, and I was like, oh, we got this. This is easy, you know, and we're playing. And then the coach here, the pro, was like, okay, but you're supposed to do it, like, 10ft apart from each other. We were playing the game like it was tennis, you know, like spread out all the way with a huge spade. And they're like, okay, but you're supposed to be, like, right up on the net doing it like, o.
Paul Pabst
Which I still plan to play exactly like it's tennis and take my chances. And if someone says, you were in.
Dan Patrick
The kitchen, you were in the bedroom.
Paul Pabst
Why were you doing that in the den?
Dan Patrick
No, no, it's. Oh, in the Living room.
Paul Pabst
You got to let it balance. You can't go to the dining room.
Dan Patrick
It's the kitchen. That's it.
Paul Pabst
A woman. I think her name was Muriel. She came over to me.
Dan Patrick
Go.
Paul Pabst
You've never played before, have you?
Dan Patrick
You were dinking in the laundry room. Oh, what?
Paul Pabst
You guys don't understand the rules, do you?
Dan Patrick
Okay, Muriel, two bounces. Muriel. I don't remember seeing Muriel, but she.
Paul Pabst
Was there with Gloria. And they would. Sadie, they were all there. They were looking. They're like, they came in from Palm beach to play some pickleball with us.
Dan Patrick
I know what's going on. Yes.
Paul Pabst
I, like, Todd's doing every old pickleball stereotype, if that's a thing. Everyone here that we've seen playing is, like 23 years old. Every guy looks like Anquan Bolden. There's some tough football player.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. James Winston plays here. Cam Jordan plays here.
Paul Pabst
Mike Dunleavy came by to chat with you.
Dan Patrick
How about that? Mike Dunleavy, senior. Mike Dunleavy, senior came in. He plays pickleball five days a week. A little bit of a social scene around here. It was, yeah, like, if I'm single, yep, I'm picking up a rock. That's why I started to figure it out a little bit this way. I was like, oh, wait a minute. I think I know what's going on here. They got a bar here? Yeah, they got two, as a matter of fact. Oh, I see. That's why this place is so crowded. Yeah, hon, I'm gonna go play pickleball. Yeah. Oh. Be back in a while. Getting innocent or, you know, let's just go grab a drink. Oh, okay. Yes. But they're right, Paul.
Paul Pabst
I got the stereotypes all wrong. I thought pickleball was one type of group where like, you know, the 70 to 90 crowd or something like that. Oy, my back.
Dan Patrick
I can blast. Next point wins.
Paul Pabst
I can't. I got 4:00 dinner.
Dan Patrick
It's not like that. Who says oi a lot here? Oh, so human.
Paul Pabst
Maybe not here, but that's what I pictured. Pickleball to me. I can't.
Dan Patrick
My hip. You think it's like, you know, shuffleboard or something where it's 70.
Paul Pabst
It's the only activity you can do. It's the last thing you do before you're bedridden. That's what I thought it was, but.
Dan Patrick
It'S not that way. All right, so we'll have that for you a little bit later on today. The match. It's Todd and Seaton versus Marv and Paulie. Oh, yeah, yeah, it's on.
Paul Pabst
Is it a point system, by the way?
Dan Patrick
All right.
Paul Pabst
No, I'm curious, like, how do you were favored by. Is it two and a half points? Is it, what is the number? How does, how do they say Pickleball points?
Dan Patrick
How about we worry about that later? All right. We got a show to do. You know him as the top NFL reporter for the Monday morning quarterback. He's borderline a member of this show at this point. He is the Monday morning quarterback. He's Albert Brer, who joins us on the program. Yeah. All righty. Man. What? Like, are you going surfing or like you got, you got camo shorts on. You got Birkenstocks.
Paul Pabst
It's my, my casual look this morning.
Dan Patrick
It's like you're, you're picking up the baton from Peter King. The way he used to dress. Peter would wear the shortest of shorts.
Paul Pabst
I'm constantly in his shadow, I guess.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, yeah.
Paul Pabst
I, I, I, I messed up the time zone and so like that, that, that has, that, that contributed to my, to the, the state I'm in right now.
Dan Patrick
Okay, Central time, you got speed up a little bit.
Paul Pabst
Still adjusted.
Dan Patrick
Oh, so you would have had something.
Paul Pabst
Well, no, I messed up, I messed up some of the timing as, as Todd knows. And yeah, it was. I'm here, though. I'm here.
Dan Patrick
All right. So how surprised were you with the Miles Garrett trade request?
Paul Pabst
I not shocked because these things like, have happened over the last 10 years, and I think the dynamic in the NFL has changed. You know, what's really interesting about it to me is like, that he went public the way that he did, which sort of tells you the truth, which, the truth is that the request has been in and the idea of going public is that he's frustrated that they're not accommodating him. And so, you know, I think what going public does for him now is it puts him in a position to put. Or it puts the Browns in a position where they don't have to pick.
Dan Patrick
Up the phone at all.
Paul Pabst
They can say, we're not, we're not changing our position. We are where we are. But calls are going to come in. You know, obviously he is what he is, which is probably, I don't know, one of the top five or so defensive players of the last decade.
Dan Patrick
So what's he worth?
Paul Pabst
I, I think the baseline's is two first round picks, so I think you guys started that number and then go from there. It's what Jalen Ramsey got. It's what Laramie Tunsil got now I think, you know, you gotta do something to get the Browns attention. So maybe it winds up being more than that. The other thing you have to remember, I mean like two first round picks sounds like this eye popping haul. The reality is the team, most of the teams that are going to want Miles Garrett are going to be teams that are in a window spot and their picks are going to be down in the 20s or even the 30s, you know. So yeah, I mean I expect there to be a lot of interest and you know, I mean the Browns position is what it should be right now, which is like we're not trading a generational player. We in the playoffs two years ago. So you know, I think for another team coming in, it's like you really have to do something to get their attention.
Dan Patrick
We've talked about this before. Deion Sanders impact on the draft with his son. And there was a report that Dion would not want his son to go to the Cleveland Browns if they were to take him. Would that scare off the Cleveland Browns in your opinion?
Paul Pabst
I don't know. He's going that high anyway. But I think it's something they'd have to consider. And you know, I, I think we saw it 20 years ago. When a guy has an NFL dad, generally those guys are more business minded. I think you can even see it with like the way like a Patrick Sutan carries himself. You know, it's when, when a guy's got a dad who's, who's been through it and went through it, they generally have like a, they naturally have a really good feel for the way the business works. And you know, I don't blame Dion for looking at it and saying, I just want my kid in a good situation. I want my kid in a situation that's going to, given the best chance to have a 10, 15 year career as a starter in the NFL. And I think Dion's smart enough to know that like you look at the best quarterbacks in the league, how many went into bad circumstances? Like we always talk about how they go to bad teams. Josh Allen was drafted by a playoff team. Lamar Jackson was drafted by a playoff team. Patrick Mahomes was drafted by a playoff team. Like all of those teams were in the playoffs the year before. So they weren't going to broken situations. Not to say they wouldn't have made it anyway, but like they went to situations that weren't just complete train wrecks. So you know, I, I think Dion obviously has been around long enough to, to know it and see it and see the difference between one thing and another. And obviously wants what's best for his son.
Dan Patrick
But you look at Cleveland, it's almost like that is the epicenter of the NFL because you got DeSean Watson, they have the number two pick, and then you have the Miles Garrett situation. You play in a very competitive division as well. I. I don't know. Are they closer to being good or closer to being really bad?
Paul Pabst
I. So I, I think they're in an interesting spot in that the core that they have only has so many more shots. You know what I mean? Like, so you got Miles Garrett going into year nine. You have Denzel Ward going into year eight. You've got some really good linemen. Joel Batonio has been there forever who are starting to age. So, like, I think it's a. I still think it's a good operation. Like, if you look at what they've done, you know, over the last five years versus where they were before that, they made the playoffs twice. And the second time they made the playoffs, it was amid the desean Watson thing completely falling apart on them. So I think it's a good operation that made a really big mistake in trading for desean Watson, you know, and they got to live with that, and they got to wear that. But I, I still think.
Dan Patrick
How long do you live with it?
Paul Pabst
Well, I think now is where. You don't live with it now. Now this is where. And I, I've said this since November, like, this plan is not new. It is not directly related to the second Achilles tear when deshaun Watson went down. Based on where they were, they had made the decision. We are no longer going to. To coddle him or protect him. Because last year, one of the reasons they didn't bring Joe Flacco back was because that wouldn't. That may not have been healthy for desean. Because having Joe, the team could look at him and say, like DeShawn, the team could look and say, we've got a better option in the room with him, Joe Flacco. And that wouldn't have been. Wouldn't have been great for desean coming off of that injury after what they went through this year. They made the conscious decision, and this was in season, they made the decision. We're at the very least going to add competition to the room. So rather than trying to build a quarterback room to support him, we're going to. We're going to put somebody in there who could take his job. And so that was a baseline before he had the Second Achilles tear and then he has the second Achilles tear and now, you know, again, like, it's just like, how. To me, it's like when you're looking at guys like Garrett and you're looking at guys like Garrett and Ward on that roster, it's, it's timelines. It's like, can we fix the quarterback position fast enough to get good enough to compete at a high enough level to contend for a championship while Garrett and Ward and some of those other guys still have something left?
Dan Patrick
He's Albert Brear, the Monday morning quarterback. Cooper cup on the market. What does he bring in return?
Paul Pabst
I mean, it's a different kettle of fish than Garrett. You know, we talk about the two.
Dan Patrick
Of them because this is a playoff team now. I know there's a big number with Cooper cup salary.
Paul Pabst
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Is that what they're moving off of?
Paul Pabst
I think it's just sort of run its course. They also have a big, like, no one's talking about the Matthew Stafford thing. I don't understand it. Like, I, I don't understand why nobody's talking about the idea that Stafford could be available. And then if you're another team, you're probably calling the Rams. That contract negotiation last year was tough.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, but you're seven points away from the NFC title game.
Paul Pabst
I know, I know. But here's the thing. Like, so they went through like a. I mean, like a legitimate, like four or five month negotiation. They wind up band aiding it. Right. Like in the summer. So you get to July and they do. They pushed $5 million forward from 25 and 26 into 24, guarantee all of it, and then remove all of his guarantees, like post 24. So now we're into a part of his contract where there's no guaranteed money left. He's making less money than he was on the books to make this year because they borrowed from that to give him the money this past year. And they had had an agreement when they, when they, when they did the reworked deal. We're going to revisit it at the end of the year. Well, now we're at the point where they're going to revisit it. So what if Matthew Stafford wants a market correction and says, what is it? Seven or eight guys are making over 50 million? I want 50 million. There's just a lot of stuff there where. Okay, but if I'm another team, I make that call, you know?
Dan Patrick
But there's only a couple of teams that are going to make that call.
Paul Pabst
Steelers.
Dan Patrick
Okay. Does his wife want to move out of Los Angeles.
Paul Pabst
I mean. And that's a fair question. Yeah, I mean, that's a fair question. But I do think. I mean, Matthew said he wants to keep playing, you know, so I think the coaches would love to have him back in Los Angeles. I think there's just. There's a lot there that they've got to work through over the next few weeks, and maybe it winds up being fine. But I know this, like, if I'm one of those teams that if I feel like I'm a quarterback away and I look at the market and I see Sam Darnold, Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, that Stafford's the guy who could put you over the top. I mean, we saw it. We saw it four years ago, you know, when he was available in the Rams. You know, we put the Rams over the top. And the Steelers is another one where I'm thinking of those timelines, you know what I mean? T.J. watt turns 31, I believe, this year, 32. Minka Fitzpatrick, I believe, is turning 29 this year. So the Steelers are, like, in that same position I talked about with Cleveland where it's like they. They don't have their answer, a quarterback. They don't have a quarterback who can put them in a position to compete with Mahomes, Allen, Burrow, Lamar in the AFC right now. So, like, they're sort of in this no man's land with those star players where it's like, can we fix this position fast enough so we can compete with TJ And Minka still at the height of their powers, or do we have to look at resetting completely? You know, I. I think that the Steelers are the one where I look at them, it's like, if there's a team that could take a swing at quarterback, there would be them. And I'd say, like, just looking at where they're at, like, if I'm them, I'm on the phone with the Rams, I'm saying, look, like.
Dan Patrick
Well, then I. I would say we want Cooper cup and Matthew Stafford if you're the Steelers, and they would.
Paul Pabst
The Rams would probably do that. You know, like, if I'm not. They wouldn't. I'm not saying they do Stafford now, but if they had gotten to the point where we're trading Stafford, I think that, you know, you could do some.
Dan Patrick
Sort of package deal there. Sam Darnold.
Paul Pabst
Yeah. So, like, the Vikings are in the. The Vikings are, I would say, comfortable with the idea now of going to JJ McCarthy in 2025, if that's the Way things shake out, you know, he lost four months of development time that he would have gotten had he not gotten hurt. But the second surgery was just a cleanup and he was very engaged. And if you want to go back to August, like, he had done enough to at least create some intrigue in that building, like, is he a better option? And Sam had a great year, but it got them to kind of look at their plan and say, is there going to come a point when we. When we want to put JJ out there this year? So he had made that much progress, even though they planned on redshirting him, then he gets hurt and he stayed engaged. Like, my understanding is, like, when the team was out on the practice field, he would go and do his rehab. But other than that, he was involved in the quarterback room and all the meetings and all that. And then he started traveling with the team in October so he could be part of the game day operation, so he could be on the headsets, all that different stuff. They feel really good about where JJ is. And I think what it does, it doesn't mean Sam's gone, but it does give them some flexibility where they can draw lines now. And maybe the answer is to franchise him. That's $40 million, a lot of money. Or maybe they can let him go to the market and say, come back to us and like, you know, we don't want to.
Dan Patrick
We don't. We.
Paul Pabst
We may not want to reset the market. We understand as a risk, we lose you if you do this. But we love you. Go to the market, see what's up. You know, it's. And it's interesting too, because to me, you won 14 games. You want to give the veterans on your team, you know, guys like Harrison Smith's back, you know, Jonathan Granard, you know, obviously Justin Jefferson, Christian Darris, all these guys who are part of this 14 win team, like, you want to give them the best chance, the most important position. So you do want to be stocked there. But I do think they feel comfortable if the guy is JJ.
Dan Patrick
All right, final 30 seconds. We're going to play the Miles Garrett game. Okay. Later on, where will he go? I'll let you have your.
Paul Pabst
My favorite destination will be Detroit. Oh, I like, I just think about that. Like, I'm like, they're. They're in a spot now where they don't need their first round. They're. They. They don't really need to keep stalking. Like, they, like they, they may be in a position where if you're them, you can almost say like, we may only have five or six rookies make our team. You know what I mean? Like, so are they in a position now where it's like we can spend, we can start to flip picks if you're them and you lost all of these coaches and you want to flip the momentum and kind of keep things going in the right direction? I mean, God, the idea of Miles Garrett opposite Aiden Hutcheson, I mean, like, that to me is really intriguing. And so, I mean, I, I think Detroit is just, Detroit's in this championship window and like after, I mean, they, they had so much momentum and then they, the ugly loss to Washington and they lose six or seven coaches and it's like, looks like, oh, God, are they missing their window? What's the easiest way to flip that?
Dan Patrick
That's interesting. I like that. Albert Breer, the Monday morning quarterback, senior NFL reporter. Thanks.
Paul Pabst
And by the way, they did call at the trade deadline on Miles.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Paul Pabst
He was not, he was not available, but they at least inquired when they traded for Zadarius Smith.
Dan Patrick
So thanks again. You got it all season long. We'll come back our play of the day. Up next, Charles Barkley at the top of the hour. Be sure to catch the live edition of the Dan Patrick show, weekdays at 9am Eastern, 6am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio in the iHeartRadio radio app. Oh, my God. The play of the day. This is the play of the day. Check this out. Tied at 130. Trey. Oh, boy, that clock is really a factor. Now Beasley with the airtight defense. Step back.
Paul Pabst
Fire. Got it. A three pointer for Trey. Timeout, Detroit. How in the world did he get that shot off?
Dan Patrick
And how in the world did he hit it? Ice. Trey scored 17 of his 34 in the fourth quarter. That's courtesy of FanDuel Sports Network Southeast play of the day brought to you by tire rack.com official tire expert of the Dan Patrick Show. Go to tirec.com dan. You'll see the tire decision guide. Full lineup of Bridgestone tires. Special offers, free road hazard protection, mobile tire installation. Tire rack.com the way tire buying should be. That was a good visit from Albert Greer. I did not think of. I knew the Lions inquired about Miles Garrett or at least there was a report that they were going to and the Browns denied them that. But now here, Miles Garrett wanting out. And if you're Detroit, your window of opportunity, as we've seen before, just ask San Francisco. It closes quickly. I also have the draftkings odds Miles Garrett will play his next snap Four. Marvin, I'll start with you.
Paul Pabst
The Chicago Bears.
Dan Patrick
The Bears not in the top five. Todd, The Green Bay packers, they're not in the top five. Paul, The Atlanta Falcons, they're not in the top five. Wow. Seon, the Commanders, they're second on the line. Let's go. The Browns are the favorites. Not going anywhere. Then it's the Raiders, which I wondered about that. Max Crosby, Miles Garrett. Okay, got something going on there. Then it's the Lions. Not really helping his case if he wants to go to a winner though. That is true. But Tom Brady's a winner and he'll be there. So he might not think that he's playing quarterback though. So nobody. He would just hang around. Tom. He would hang around a winner, not necessarily his teammates. The Patriots also in there as well. But I think that's interesting with the Cleveland Browns. The Browns, of course they're going to say not going anywhere. They want to see how much they can get for Miles Garrett. But if you look back on the Khalil Mack trade, when Khalil Mack went to the Bears a few years ago, he was kind of in the same position here. The Bears gave up first round picks in 20, 19, 2020. A third round pick, a sixth round pick, and they got Mac. And then the Bears also received a second round pick in the fifth round pick. All right, so that's a lot. So it's more than just two first round picks. But that's where you're starting. That's the conversation gets started with two first round picks. Yes. Marvin, if you're the Lions, should you.
Paul Pabst
Pull LA Rams and just go all in?
Dan Patrick
You know what, we don't need all these draft picks. We're trying to win right now. That city. Yes, yes. And you know, having depth and they've really tested that because they did as best they could with their defense. They just kept, you know, there were too many holes to fill. The Cooper Cup. How about this Cooper cup odds of where he'll end up next season. Seaton, start with you. The Dallas Cowboys, they're not part of the top five. What? Todd, the Miami Dolphins, they're not part of the top five.
Paul Pabst
Paul, the New England Patriots.
Dan Patrick
They are fourth on the list. Marvin, the Kansas City Chiefs, they are not. No, but that would be typical of the Chiefs.
Paul Pabst
I mean, they just got DeAndre Hopkins.
Dan Patrick
It's not out of the realm of possibility. No, that'd be one of those where they go, wait, they get Cooper Cup. Yeah, they gave up a fourth round pick. Yeah, right. Yeah. What the Heck. What? The Steelers and the Bengals are tied for the best odds to land Cooper Cup. There's a report the Rams want to trade him if they do out out of the nfc. So the, the teams on here, Steelers, Bengals, Patriots, Chargers. The commander is also in there as well. Yes. So would you rather play for the Steelers or the Bengals? Probably rather go to the Bengals. Right. Oh, I, well, I'm going to play with Joe Burrow. Yeah. And I don't have to be the number one option with Jamar Chase. Their season this year is still one of the more puzzling things that's ever happened. How do you have the wide receiver wins the triple crown? You have a quarterback who would have been an MVP if they were actually a playoff team and you have the sack leader as well. I don't know if that's happened before, but you know, Burrow had an unbelievable year. Jamar Chase did. And like Hendrickson, you like drastically underperformed. Yes. And no one got fired or anything. Right? I don't think like nothing happened. It was just like, ah, just a fluke season. See you next year. One hour in the books on this Tuesday. Charles Barkley will join us. Coming up, top of the hour, Brady Quinn from Fox Sports will stop by and he's the dad of Arch Manning, Cooper Manning. The Manning family will stop by as well. One hour in the books. Two more to go. Minister of Humor, Fritzi, Marv Seton, Paulie, yours truly. We're back after this.
The Dan Patrick Show – Hour 1 with Albert Breer
Release Date: February 4, 2025
Guest: Albert Breer
In the debut hour of The Dan Patrick Show on February 4, 2025, host Dan Patrick, alongside co-host Paul Pabst, delved into pressing NFL topics, particularly focusing on the Cleveland Browns' ongoing struggles and trade dynamics involving key players. The episode was enriched with insights from Albert Breer, the renowned Monday Morning Quarterback and senior NFL reporter, setting the stage for a comprehensive discussion on the current state and future prospects of the Browns.
Poll Discussion: Mess or Future?
The hour kicked off with a poll question examining whether the Cleveland Browns are a "total mess" or in a "great position for the future." Both Dan and Paul expressed a dual perspective:
Dan Patrick (05:35): "I think if you get rid of DeSean Watson's contract, maybe eat it for that last year, you got some draft picks, and maybe you say, all right, let's start over. It's just I don't trust the organization to do things right."
Historical Drafting Failures
The Browns' drafting history was scrutinized, highlighting a series of first-round selections that failed to deliver expected performances:
Paul Pabst (07:02): "Trent Richardson, round one. Brandon Weeden, round one. Didn't work out. Barcavis Mingo, 2013, 2014. Justin Gilbert, Johnny Manziel, round one..."
Despite accumulating numerous first-round picks, the Browns struggled to build a competitive roster, leading to persistent underperformance and organizational distrust.
Trade Dynamics and Team Strategy
A significant portion of the discussion centered on defensive powerhouse Miles Garrett's desire to exit Cleveland. Albert Breer provided expert analysis on the situation:
Albert Breer (31:05): "He's probably, I don't know, one of the top five or so defensive players of the last decade."
Breer emphasized the potential trade value of Garrett, suggesting a baseline of two first-round picks due to his elite status. However, he noted that teams in a rebuilding phase with lower draft picks might find acquiring Garrett a viable option:
Albert Breer (31:19): "I think the baseline's is two first-round picks..."
Deion Sanders' Influence
The possibility of Deion Sanders opposing the Cleveland Browns acquiring his son, Shador Sanders, was discussed as a complicating factor that could deter potential suitors:
Albert Breer (32:28): "I think Dion obviously has been around long enough to know it and see it and see the difference between one thing and another."
Despite this, Breer maintained that the Browns’ position remains strong, albeit with aging key players like Garrett and Denzel Ward, questioning the longevity of their core lineup.
Preparedness and Media Handling
Patrick Mahomes' recent appearance at media night was highlighted, particularly his adept handling of recurring questions about Tom Brady's legacy:
Paul Pabst (10:25): "Patrick has a three-step process: he compliments Tom Brady, says he has no control over his legacy, and focuses on the upcoming game."
This strategic approach not only showcased Mahomes' media savviness but also reinforced his focus on present performance over past legacies.
Kelsey's Career Prospects
The conversation shifted to tight end Travis Kelsey's future with the Kansas City Chiefs, contemplating whether he might retire after a potential Super Bowl win:
Dan Patrick (14:17): "I was going to say we want Cooper Kupp and Matthew Stafford if you're the Steelers."
There was contemplation whether Chiefs' success might prompt Kelsey to consider early retirement, capitalizing on his established brand and accomplishments.
Chiefs' Popularity vs. Drake
A side discussion compared the Kansas City Chiefs' popularity surge to that of rapper Drake, observing the fluctuating public sentiments:
Dan Patrick (10:51): "When you think about it, the Chiefs came along and got rid of the Patriots. That's what people wanted."
Pickleball Banter
Amidst the heavy sports analysis, light-hearted banter emerged about pickleball, challenging preconceptions about the sport's demographics and competitiveness.
As the first hour drew to a close, anticipation built for upcoming segments featuring notable guests such as Albert Breer, Charles Barkley, and members of the Manning family. The hosts reiterated the Browns' persistent issues while setting the stage for deeper dives into NFL strategies and player movements in subsequent hours.
Cleveland Browns' Dilemma: Persistent drafting failures have left the Browns in a precarious position, struggling to build a competitive team despite multiple first-round picks.
Miles Garrett's Trade Saga: Garrett's desire to leave Cleveland adds complexity to the Browns' roster management, with potential high-value trades impacting the team's draft strategy.
Patrick Mahomes' Media Prowess: Mahomes continues to demonstrate exceptional media handling skills, effectively steering conversations away from legacy comparisons.
Travis Kelsey's Impact: Kelsey remains a pivotal figure for the Chiefs, with discussions hinting at his potential retirement following future successes.
The episode provided a thorough analysis of the Browns' organizational challenges, the implications of key player trades, and insights into the strategies of prominent NFL figures, setting a high bar for future episodes in the series.
