You are listening to the Dan Patrick show on FOX Sports Radio. Well, we made it to a Wednesday. I thought it was going to be a quiet Tuesday. And then all of a sudden it wasn't. Talk about that with Bill Belichick, had Mike McCarthy sworn in as the Steelers head coach. Joe Brady gets elevated to the Buffalo Bills head coach. We'll talk about those coaching hires as well. 8773-DP-SHoVE Email address dpdanpatrick.com Twitter handle @dpshow Good morning if you're watching on Peacock or the NBC Sports Network. And we say good morning to our radio affiliates around the country, including iHeartRadio, Fox Sports Radio as well. Sao Palantonio, hall of Fame voter will join us a little bit later on. Former NFL defensive back Dominic Foxworth from the Mothership will stop by as well. Got a Play of the Day poll question, a stat of the day or two? Stat of the Day brought to you by Panini America, the official trading cards of the program. First hour brought to you by Liberty Mutual Insurance. Why pay full price when you can customize and save? Switch to Liberty Mutual. They'll customize your auto and home insurance so you only pay for what you need. All righty. Bill Belichick, not a Hall of Famer at least this year. And got a call yesterday afternoon. Somebody gave me a heads up and he said, hey, I don't know if it's official yet, but Bill's not going to get in. And I, you know, it's one of those where you go, oh, that's right, for the hall of Fame. Coaches don't have to wait five years. It's one year. Mike Tomlin's eligible next year for the hall of Fame. Didn't even think anything of it. And then all of a sudden it came out that it was true. Bill Belichick didn't get 80% of the votes. Now there's 50 voters, have to have at least 40 who say yay or nay. And apparently you had at least 11 voters who decided that Bill Belichick was going to have to wait. Now they factored in Spygate, they factored in Deflategate. Even though Bill wasn't involved In Deflategate, except for defending Tom Brady. Spygate. We've talked about that ad nauseam about what they did. You know, Belichick and the Patriots have been on the receiving end of two of the highest punishments in NFL history as far as draft picks and fines. But for Bill Belichick, six Super Bowls as a coach, two as a defensive coordinator, eight, and he's on the outside looking in. Now we can talk about how egregious this is in voters and what they factor in. And. And you are supposed to factor in football stuff, not ancillary stuff, like off the field. You know, they probably did that with Michael Irvin. They probably did that with Terrell Owens to a certain degree. I don't know if they factored in that with Lawrence Taylor. But this also pushes back the other coaches who were up for hall of Fame consideration. Does Belichick get in next year? These are the other coaches who were semifinalists. Tom Coughlin, Mike Holmgren, Chuck Knox, Buddy Parker, Dan Reeves, Marty Schottenheimer, George Seifert, Mike Shanahan. Which means they go into the pool next year because Belichick did not get in. Talking to a voter yesterday who did talk about the whole process, the 10am until 6pm Zoom call, you kind of speak up for somebody. There were a couple people who spoke up against people I've been lobbying for transparency. Like, make this C span. Make it, you know, pbs. Let us, let us see what goes on, like one day. Let us understand the importance of this. It's the hall of Fame, the importance for these other players. But if you get five finalists and you have to vote for three of the five to get into the hall of Fame, and it's got to be 80%. Well, as I was told by one of the voters, you end up splitting your votes and then nobody gets in. So Ken Anderson doesn't get in, or Roger Craig or LC Greenwood. These are all hall of Famers. But it should just be 5. If you get it to 5, celebrate 5 instead of not celebrating anybody. And it. There's such a backlog. This is a big problem for the hall of Fame moving forward because, like, Luke Keakley is a Hall of Famer. He should be in the hall of Fame. Adam Vinateri should be in the hall of Fame. You get this backlog and then you get more players who are going to come in. Larry Fitzgerald will probably get in this year, Drew Brees getting in this year. But this is separate from this, you know, the, the senior committee voting on these players, you know, it's their last go round. Many of you didn't see LC Greenwood or Kenny Anderson. I did. I have no problem with them being hall of Famers. Roger Craig was that first back that could run and catch. I have no problem. He played for great teams. Hall of Famer, but we get nothing out of it except for, hey, we showed Bill Belichick because that's what it felt like. You use this referendum, this platform, to say, hey, Bill, you're not bigger than the game. Bill Polian in the hall of Fame said he's not even sure if he voted for Bill Belichick. He thought he did. Wait a minute. Former Colts gm and you don't remember if you voted for Bill Belichick? I mean, it wasn't that long ago, Bill. And then there are reports that maybe you had some subterfuge, something was orchestrated behind the scenes, people trying to gather enough votes. We need 11 votes. Bill won't get in. We'll teach him. Now, whether that happened or not, there's certainly been speculation reporting on that. But when Bill Polian said that Belichick should be in, but he's not sure if he, he's not 100% sure if he voted for Bill Belichick. There weren't that many candidates to remember if you voted yay or nay. So that's part of it as well. You're going to get, you know, people who probably have a grudge against Bill, people who lost a Bill, people who thought Bill cheated. I mean, Robert Kraft should be in the hall of Fame. When you think about what he's done, he's not in now. He might get in this year. We don't know what the results are. All we're hearing is that Bill Belichick's not getting in. But it just makes the hall of Fame look bad, that's all. Because this is, it's obvious. Even, you know, with his foibles, even with every, you know, all the blemishes here, he's still first ballot hall of Famer. And if you don't think he's the greatest coach in NFL history, it doesn't take long to take role, to find out where he is on that list. He did it. He did it at a very high level. Now does. First thing I thought of when I was told this and even said this back to the voter, I go, well, what's this mean for Tom Brady? And he goes, I didn't even think of that. I said, well, be consistent. If, if that, if, if this is what you're going to do now, Are you going to vote for Belichick next year if you didn't vote for him this year? So you're going to say, yes, I did this. Yes, I. I'm holding him accountable. Don't vote. Vote for him ever again if that's how you feel. Did he cheat? He kind of cheated. So you're not going to vote for him? Tom Brady, he was part of. I mean, he benefited from Spygate. Deflategate was silly to begin with, but still, you lie to the commissioner, you get suspended, your team, you know, gets punished. Then don't put Tom Brady in next year, you know, or when he's eligible. Eligible. If you're not, if you're going to hold Belichick to a higher standard, then hold Brady to a higher standard as well. Brady, though, I know, had a letter that was read that he spoke up on Bill Belichick's behalf, but he wasn't involved in the zoom call from what I'm told. But it just felt like there was an agenda here with Bill Belichick. I just hate the fact that these other players, former players, aren't going to get their day because it's going to be all about Bill Belichick. And that's unfortunate because the hall of Fame, it's a museum. Do you qualify? Yes, you qualify. Did you do something incredible? Yes. Then we should celebrate that. Did Belichick cheat? Yes. In accordance to, you know, the commissioner, he cheated. Okay. He paid a price. Julius Peppers got popped, I think his rookie year, second year in the league for PEDs. Now, granted, it might have been a Fedron. He's first ballot hall of Famer. Do you hold him accountable? He gets a Hall pass. Like, I. I just hate when we pick and choose justice here when it comes to sports, you know, did the Astros cheat? They did cheat. Or Barry Bonds, did he cheat? Yes, he cheated. Okay. Should you have put an asterisk by Bill Belichick's name like they did Pete Rose? If he did something and you're going to hold him accountable, then just let us know. We're not going to let you win. We're not going to let you, you know, first year, whatever it is, but to come out and be the morality police here, and it feels like those who might have been on the receiving end of a Patriot win had a problem with Bill Belichick, including those with the Colts. Yeah, Paulie.
Paulie
The initial report by Don Van Natt and ESPN accused Bill Poling of telling his fellow voters at Belichick should Serve a one year penance for Spygate. I really agree with what you said earlier. If you're not going to vote him in this year, be consistent. Don't vote him in next year if you're one of the 11 voters who didn't stick with whatever you thought.
Dan Patrick
And I don't know if, you know, Robert Kraft is going to be held accountable as the owner of the Patriots. Robert Kraft's 84 years of age, and he was a Hall of fame finalist after 14 years, and it's unknown if he or any other finalist received the necessary votes for induction. So you're punishing Robert Kraft, you put Jerry Jones in, but you're going to punish Robert Kraft. Okay. It's just picking and choosing, and it kind of puts yourself in a really delicate predicament here when it comes to who cheated, didn't cheat, kind of cheated. You know, all of this, you're your, your voters celebrate the game. If you want to say, hey, you know, I voted for Bill. I have a problem with what happened with Spygate, but I voted for Bill. His resume is too good. You know, incredible coach, greatest coach ever. One of the greatest coaches ever. It's just, it's unfortunate. It's unfortunate. But, oh, by the way, a couple of coaching hires yesterday, and sure, Sanders is going to be a Pro bowl quarterback. That's what I thought the day was going to be. Then all of a sudden it's like, wait a minute, wow. And then even hearing from a source this morning who followed up with me and gave me a little bit more background information on it. And also, you know, they, they're going to change, they're going to change the format next year, from what I'm told. And maybe you have five. I mean, you're narrowing it down to five. Shouldn't that be good enough? Because I don't want this backlog and I don't want this to affect other players. Coaches who may not be alive when they get into the Pro Football hall of Fame, celebrate, you know, L.C. greenwood passed away, his widow still alive, not going to get that moment to celebrate. Or Kenny Anderson, the former Bengal quarterback, or Roger Craig, you know, you can't say, well, next year, next year, it's like, Larry Fitzgerald will get in probably first battle the hall of Famer, which means Reggie Wayne and Tori Holt, they won't get in or they're going to get pushed back. Because every year it's somebody where you go, well, hall of Famer, and that's the way it's going to be. But this backlog here, they got to change that because you got so many people. Then they're waiting for that knock on the door. They're waiting for that phone call. And they deserve that. But the way it is now, if you pare it down to five, and then you have to vote for three, and not everybody's going to be voting 80% for somebody. And that's a shame. If you get to the final five, you should get in. You should. All right, we'll come up with a poll question. We will play the Mike McCarthy cliche game. What was going to be the first cliche that he would say at his press conference? Man, he looked like me when he got up in front of the media crying. I'm like, mike, keep it together. Immediately, I thought, I'm going to be like at my daughter's wedding later this summer, just going to get up there and be like Mike McCarthy. Joe Brady got promoted. He was the offensive coordinator in Buffalo. So the Browns might be zeroing in on a head coach. Might be Arizona and Vegas. I still think Vegas is holding out for somebody who is coaching in the Super Bowl. At least that's my gut feeling. I don't know what Arizona is doing. And Cleveland might just hire Jim Schwartzer. Promote Jim Schwartz. Somebody's gotta want to take that job, right? Someone. All right, we'll take a break. Just getting started on this Wednesday. Gang's all here. Fritzy Seaton, Marv Poly, yours truly, the backroom guys. And we'll get to your phone calls as well right after this Dan Patrick Show. We'll settle on a poll question. Your phone call's always welcome. Peter King, frequent guest on the show and a Hall of Fame voter for over 30 years, said whoever it was that couldn't set aside Belichick being a jerk to them or who have sneered at how he's conducted himself over the past year or got their way, proving yet again that no amount of power gets abused like hardly any at all. So congratulations to those who didn't want him in. You got your pound of flesh at the expense of the integrity of the Pro Football hall of Fame. Paula, you have some questions that you believe the audience would like answers to?
Paulie
Yeah, I've seen these out there. And this one goes right to what Peter King just said. Do you think that the 11 voters who didn't vote for Belichick used Spygate as the rationale. Well, is really about how Bill treated their media brethren the past two decades?
Dan Patrick
Well, I'm going to guess that Bill Polian didn't vote for Bill Belichick. That's just my thought of reading everything that I've read and the reporting attached to this. So it's not just members of the media. But I hope that that's not the case. I, I, from what I was told last night and reiterated this morning, Spygate was brought up. Bill wasn't involved in Deflategate, but Spygate, Spygate 1, Spygate 2 brought up. I'm hoping if that's what they held this against Bill, they, they did that instead of, hey, you were a jerk if you got in. If you're a jerk or not a jerk, boy, there's a lot of people wouldn't get into halls of fame.
Paulie
All right, what else, Pauling, should Bill Belichick respond today?
Dan Patrick
No.
Paulie
In any way?
Dan Patrick
No. No. Let everybody carry his water for him. Let everybody fight the battle for him. You know, if Bill wants to come out and say disappointed but want to congratulate Those who are going to go into the hall of Fame, that's fine. And if he announces it just like that, then I'll be fine with that.
Paulie
Okay, a follow up question. This is mine.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Paulie
Weirdly, did Bill Belichick have a good day yesterday? Because the past two years his reputation as legacy has taken a beating. And after this came down yesterday, everybody, football people, non football people, all reminded the world of that he's the greatest football coach ever.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, but there's that. And I don't know if he's embarrassed or humiliated or whatever that is because it shouldn't be on Bill. It's really the hall of Fame voters and anytime I voted for an award, I let people know who I voted for or if I didn't vote for somebody. I believe in transparency because the importance of this, this is, I mean, it's the culmination and we should know why you don't like somebody or why you do. What was the big, you know, hold up, you know, why didn't this guy get in? But this guy got in. Like we want to understand this, we want to understand numbers. We, when it comes to stats, a wide receiver, quarterback in the 60s as opposed to one, you know, now you're all going into the hall of Fame and trying to come up with con, you know, context of this is why you got in or this is why you didn't, I guess. Tom Coughlin, a Hall of Famer, well, now it's going to be the. Well, Belichick is it, Is Mike Holmgren a Hall of Famer? Mike Shanahan, I mean, Don Coriel is in the hall of Fame now. He's in because he's an innovator. He wasn't a, you know, they won three playoff games. I think he won just over a hundred games. But he changed the passing attack. Air Coryell. Tom Flores won a couple of Super Bowls, but I don't know if people considered him one of the great coaches of all time. And this is what you hate to do because now you go, well, wait a minute, that guy got in or that guy got in or that guy didn't get in. And that's unfortunate. That shouldn't be the case here with Bill Belichick. If he didn't get in unanimously, okay, I mean, that happens. But then you would, I'd be curious why you didn't vote for him. And if five voters said I couldn't get past Spygate, yeah, he cheated the game, I can't get past that. And I, I, I can't give him the distinction of going in on the first ballot. My ballot. Okay. All right. You build up the cachet to be able to vote on the Pro Football hall of Fame. You've been around the league. Have you done this for other players or coaches, things that you hold them accountable for? Yeah.
Paulie
Paulie, this is another one. You went over the rules to get in, and it, you know, it had to be 11, 10 or more people to not vote for Belichick for him not to get in. Correct. If it was eight, he's in it.
Dan Patrick
They had to get 11.
Paulie
Okay. Based off that, it's a coincidence. It's not a coincidence. That's at 11. My theory is this. Whomever stirred the pot for this stirred the pot before they walked into the room and made sure they had the 11 votes to not get him in.
Dan Patrick
Yes. I don't know if you went in and you could be convinced once you went in and how much, you know, time you were spending on Spygate. It feels like this is probably premeditated that people knew or discussed that Bill shouldn't go in on the first ballot. Yeah.
Paulie
Pauline, last one. If you were a Hall of Fame voter that didn't vote for Belichick, would you admit it today and be open to talking about it today?
Dan Patrick
I would, but I can only speak if I was voting. I mean, now this is apples to bananas, not even apples to apples or oranges. But when I voted on the MVP and I didn't vote for Carl Malone one year, and I didn't vote for Charles Barkley one year, and I said, because Michael Jordan is the most valuable player and he'll win the championship. But I had to answer to a newspaper in Salt Lake City and a newspaper in Phoenix, Arizona. But I. Okay, Charles was wonderful that year. Carl Malone was wonderful that year. But I'm not ashamed that I didn't vote for them. I voted for Jordan. Not a big stretch there, but still you. I put my name in front of that. I think I, I, I got the Heisman Trophy. I tell you who I voted for. So the, but the hall of Fame, it, you know, there's. I mean, that's forever. You know, that's the culmination of a career, and there's so much attached to that. Imagine these, these candidates, and you're just waiting. Imagine being a finalist for nine years. I think Reggie Wayne has been a finalist. Tory Holt, they're just waiting, waiting. And you can't add to your stats. You can't go out and play, and you just wait and Those who get, you know, you get. You're in a hotel room in Canton, Ohio, and they're going to be. Are they going to knock on my door? Just if they do, I'm getting in. Just imagine you're waiting. Waiting. I. I talked to a candidate, this is years ago, and he. He was told he was getting it. Told he was getting it. He just waited and waited. And then you realize that knock is not coming for that year. That build up, that letdown. He eventually got in. He eventually got in. He even joked, he said, knock down the door. Don't knock on it, knock it down. Yes.
Marvin
Todd, is there an exact cutoff time so you could be put out of your misery?
Dan Patrick
It's like, if I don't get the.
Marvin
Knock by 2:30 Eastern Time, it's not happening. As opposed to waiting all hours of the afternoon into the evening still hoping.
Dan Patrick
They'Re going to come. Well, no, there's a time element and.
Marvin
They know exactly once that time hits you.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. Yes. Marvin.
Marvin
Imagine if you're somebody like Chris Carter, who for. I thought was a. For sure First Battle hall of Famer, and you wait six years.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Marvin
Like. Or to. To waited. Wait two, two or three years.
Dan Patrick
I know, I know. It's. It. There's so much attached to it, so much emotion. Like, I hope Kenny Anderson gets into the hall of Fame. I hope Roger Craig gets in, or Elsie Greenwood. But, you know, there's this backlog that's part of the problem if you have five, but then with your voting, nobody gets in. Did you do your job? I think that's. That's where it's flawed. I think it'll change next year. Yeah.
Paulie
Paulie, What I found interesting about the reaction on social media, people who don't like Bill Belichick or teams, fans of teams that he beat were like, well, you know, I can't stand the guy. He was not nice to the media. But him not being first ballot is inexcusable.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. I, I don't even know Bill Belichick. I've had very, very little interaction with him. But it's not like there were guys that I didn't like. But I have to be honest and say they were hall of Fame players or I might have had a run in with somebody. It doesn't matter. You know, And I think that's the unfortunate part is you sometimes look at those voters and you go, we're the gatekeepers here. Yeah.
Todd
See, Bill Belichick has won like 10%.
Dan Patrick
Of all Super Bowls. Well, he's been a part of 8 out of 59. If you look at him as a coordinator with the.
Todd
All the ones that were ever played, of all the ones that there have ever been.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. And so he's won six as a head coach out of the 59 that have been. So a little better than 10%.
Todd
Not that great.
Dan Patrick
Sorry. I'm sorry. It's my opinion. Okay.
Todd
I'm sorry.
Dan Patrick
Sorry. Yeah.
Paulie
Paulie, I know this is before your time, but I've read stories about Ted Williams, the great hall of Fame baseball player, that he was not very cooperative or friendly with the media and was disliked by some of the media. I looked it up. He was not. He got 93% of the vote. That means that 20 people didn't vote for Ted Williams on the first ballot. A war hero, which shouldn't even count, but should.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, but Ted wasn't nice to anybody.
Paulie
Right.
Dan Patrick
And the writers in Boston, I think the year he batted.406, they voted Joe DiMaggio. Now DiMaggio, the 56 game hitting streak. But even the local writers, and normally the local writers, you know, that's a home field advantage, you know, but Teddy Ball Game was. He didn't care. He. He didn't care. He was playing. And. And you. If you liked him, great. If you didn't, he was not trying to curry favor. And there are, there are players who are in, you know, modern day who are very media friendly and it's helped them get into the hall of Fame. I really believe that. Let's see a couple of phone calls here. Once again, Joe Brady elevated as the head coach of the Bills. I don't like this, but I don't like it. Because if you're going to change something and get rid of Sean McDermott, you're going to promote your offensive coordinator and you're going to keep your gm. So have you changed anything here? And Josh Allen reportedly was involved in this and Joe Brady, you know, he's number one fan, the Josh Allen fan club. But I don't know what changes here because you were running Joe Brady's offense. Correct. And the players you brought in were brought in by Brandon Bean. What's changing, except for you're moving into a new stadium? So I didn't. I thought the hiring was like, okay. And then Mike McCarthy going to Pittsburgh, it was emotional for him because he was coming back home and he talked about, well, being the Steelers head coach and he got very emotional.
Mike McCarthy
You know, oftentimes coaches and players, you know, you put on new team colors and it takes, it takes A minute to feel comfortable in those new colors, but to be blessed beyond any measure. One day to put on the colors you wore since you brought home. I apologize. When you come home from Mercy Hospital, I do want to thank. Want to thank Art Rooney, Omar Khan, Dan Rooney and the entire Steelers organization for the trust they placed in, in me to represent one of the most storied franchise in all sports. I understand and embrace the responsibility, the privilege and the weight that comes with the stewardship. This city, this franchise, this fan base means the world to me because Pittsburgh's my world and it's just awesome to be back here.
Dan Patrick
And then he talked about his goal as the Steeler head coach.
Mike McCarthy
I do want to thank two men I'm very fortunate to call friends, Mike Tomlin and Bill Cower. They represented this organization with such class and I'm honored, honored to follow in their footsteps. They left the proverbial cupboard full for sure. My focus is singular and it's time to bring another championship back to this great city. With that, I just want to make sure that when we do get that trophy that, you know, the seventh trophy in a case will, will start that victory parade at 1137 Greenfield Avenue.
Dan Patrick
All right. We did the Mike McCarthy cliche game prior to the press conference. Seaton gave us a rich tradition of football history in Pittsburgh. I feel like I was close on that, Marvin. Upholding the standard. Todd talked about chasing Super Bowl 7. Paul talked about building a football culture. I gave you two of them. This a hard working city and we're just going to be playing football. We're a hard working football team and that's what we're going to be doing. And then I brought up that he would. I modified mine by saying, he's going to say that I'm back home now or I'm coming back home now. Here is your winner in the Mike McCarthy cliche game yesterday.
Marvin
I am well aware that anything short of bringing a Super bowl title back to this great city and its fans is unacceptable. And I can assure you that I will do everything in my power to do just that. If my math is correct, the Steelers organization has won six championships. That being said, my new favorite number is lucky 7. Hold on tight to your terrible towels because I can assure you we're about to go on a wild, exciting ride.
Dan Patrick
Okay, that's a speech. I'm. I was looking for a cliche.
Marvin
Lucky seven.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Marvin
He's all about lucky number seven.
Dan Patrick
Seventh title. All right, so Todd won.
Paulie
There's a debate in the back room. Todd's thing was not a cliche, but he nailed what Mike McCarthy eventually said.
Dan Patrick
Okay, okay. I mean, I'll give it to you on a technicality. I think he got it. Okay, all right. I think he got. I mean, it's pretty cliche to go up there and say, oh, well, we're trying to win. I mean, I came here to win day one. How long will it take to turn this around?
Todd
I came to win day one. Nobody can win the super bowl on day one.
Dan Patrick
But football coaches want to win this. No. I don't know. I thought we're a hard working city and we're just gonna be a hard working football team is what we're gonna do. I'm back home.
Marvin
Yes, Marvin, Stewardship was on my. That was my next guess.
Dan Patrick
Yes.
Paulie
I am so mad I didn't go with the old faithful of privilege and stewardship. That was so obvious.
Dan Patrick
Chris in Syracuse. Hi, Chris. What's on your mind today?
Caller
Hey, thanks as always, Dan. Yeah, a couple things for you and a possible poll question off of yesterday's presser in Pittsburgh. The possibility of Aaron Rodgers and Mike McCarthy being reunited next season. Viking coach Kevin McConnell has stated. Kevin O' Connell has stated not. Not that he's looking for a capable backup for JJ McCarthy, but competition for him. And Dan, you mentioned last week tying maybe Aaron Rodgers to the bikes. And it makes sense. Rodgers wanted to play in Minnesota last year and will have a ton of weapons, good offensive line, very good defense. So unlike his last few years in Green Bay and with the jets and the Steelers, he won't be expected to carry the team. Plus he'll play a majority of his games indoors, which never had that luxury. So, yeah, if he has anything left in the tank, he could put the Vikes over the top. And the Pro Football hall of Fame has always said, unlike baseball, they never take anything off the field into account. So you wonder if Bill Polian's influence is behind the snub. And I think Tony Dungy is a voter and has a relationship with Bill Polian. I wonder what his thoughts are.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, but this was on the field. Spygate was on the field. That's a football crime. Deflategate. Bill wasn't involved in that other than trying to defend Tom brady. But spygate. Spygate1 spygate2 that's a football crime. Mark in Vermont. Hi, Mark, what's on your mind?
Caller
Hi, Dan, longtime caller. Well, I've actually been listening since gay. That's when I started listening to talk radio, sports talk radio. And anyway, 5 11, 185. I have a comment and a couple and a question. My question was, was Bill in the hotel in Canton waiting for his knock?
Dan Patrick
No, no, no. My comment, no, those. Those are the players in Canton who wait for the knock. This is the senior committee. So, no, that he. He's not in Canton now or wasn't. Good.
Caller
I'm glad for that because he doesn't deserve that. And I also, I had heard that Bill Parcells also didn't get in on the first ballot because the thinking was he might come back and coach. And I would love to see Bill come back and get Shula's record. And then my other comment, Dan, was that one thing that I've loved and missed in recent years is your Bill impersonations. And I hope that out of this, we start to hear a little bit more of you impersonating Bill Belichick at his pressers.
Dan Patrick
Thank you, Mark. I remember talking to Bill Parcells. We were in Tampa, and he announced that he was coming back to coach. And I remember asking him about putting aside going into the hall of Fame or being hall of Fame eligible, and he couldn't care less. Like we thought, boy, you're gonna reset the clock there. But coaches only have to wait a year. Mike Tomlin is eligible next year for the Pro Football hall of Fame. I don't know why they do that, but Tomlin will be up for the hall of Fame next year. All right, we'll take a break. More phone calls coming up. And we're gonna. We're gonna bring back something Reggie Miller said yesterday that apparently set the Internet on fire. That over a million views of what Reggie Miller had to say about Derrick Rose and LeBron James. We'll have that for you coming up as well. But next, our play of the day. Gain ground with Penske Reggie Miller was on yesterday and we were talking about Derrick Rose got his jersey retired by the Chicago Bulls. And then Reggie had this to say. Derrick Rose got his jersey retired. Is he going to the hall of Fame?
Marvin
I would be surprised if he doesn't. He would be the only MVP not to be in the hall of Fame.
Dan Patrick
Man, if he didn't get hurt first.
Marvin
Ballot I doubt he'll be first ballot but he'll get in at some point.
Dan Patrick
But for for a six to eight.
Marvin
Year stretch he was. Him and LeBron were battling for who was the best player in the game and the youngest mvp. I would be Surprised that at some point he's going to get in all MVPs. Get in.
Dan Patrick
Okay. Was Reggie wrong with the time element there? Yes, six to eight years because Derrick Rose wasn't healthy. But I think off the top of his head, he didn't know that was going to be something I brought up. But there was a three year window where you could say that Derrick Rose was equal with LeBron James. He was an MVP, the youngest MVP, and then he got hurt. But six to eight years, he wasn't battling LeBron James. So reg misspoke there. Reg is my guy. But I think if you look at Derrick Rose's career, he was a comet. He was, you know, burst onto the scene and you know, those first three years, he elevated himself to one of the best players in the game. Yes. It definitely felt like there was a moment there where was like, man, this might be his league now or this is certainly the next guy for sure, you know, but there were over a million views of that yesterday. Probably more than that. You, you know, you put LeBron into the equation with Derek Rose. But if I had Reggie on now, he's traveling, you know, I would say you don't mean six to eight years because that's not true. But there was a three year window there where Derrick Rose was a forced to be reckoned with and one of the best players in the game. Yeah, Paul.
Paulie
And to back that argument, Derrick Rose won the MVP in his third season. LeBron won in his sixth. When LeBron went on his run from 08 to 2013, he won four of five MVPs. The only year he didn't win it was the year Derrick Rose did. Derrick Rose was given $100 million deal by Adidas. Like Seaton said, he was the next guy.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, yeah. Then he got hurt. But no, he didn't have longevity there. But I know people are roughing up Reggie because Reggie has him doing something great six to eight years and that wasn't the case. But Reg is my guy. He made a mistake here. I would say it to him if, if he joined us. Let's see Greg in Tampa. Good morning, Greg. What's on your mind today?
Caller
Hey, good morning, dp. I wanted to get your thoughts on what you think about what Ryan Lee said. I don't know if you heard or not. Apparently he's one of the hall of Fame voters and on his Twitter he said he didn't vote for Belichick. It's come time that if you are able to penetrate the walls of voting, yours or anyone's resentments can be fueled with revenge. Tom ain't getting in either. Lost the foals, no way, no how.
Dan Patrick
Okay. Ryan Leaf is not a Hall of Fame voter. He was. He was kidding, but he's not a Hall of Fame voter. But thank you for the phone call, Greg. Jamie in Virginia Beach. Hi, Jamie.
Caller
Hey, good morning, Dan. I just got a prediction to make about Bill Belichick, Snub of all time. I really think as prideful of a person as he is, you're probably going to see one of his better coaching performances this year in college football. I mean, I just think he's going to be waiting and waiting for this college football season to start, and it's just going to be an impressive thing to watch this year.
Dan Patrick
I don't think that this is going to be motivation for him. I don't know if he's now going to try harder than he did when he first got there to North Carolina. No, I don't see that at all. Yes.
Marvin
Marv, do you also see this omission being a distraction? Maybe the Patriots are going to get way too many questions about this during super bowl week. Like, Vrabel might get a bunch of, like he's not in the Hall.
Dan Patrick
Like, yeah, you know, people are going to ask Robert Kraft if he makes himself available, are going to ask, you know, Robert Kraft should be in the hall of Fame. I mean, I know that we're looking at Bill Belichick. Robert Kraft has been eligible for quite some time and now he is back in the super bowl again. Hopefully he gets in. You know, I always look at this and I know it's morbid, but you start to look at this posthumously. And having watched these players, you know, they get up there in age, you know, Steve McMichael of the Bears, health wise, you know, you have CTE, you know, you have all of this, certainly with football is to be able to celebrate and actually truly be able to celebrate with your family, teammates. But Robert Kraft deserves to be in the hall of Fame. Belichick will get into the hall of Fame. We'll talk to a Hall of Fame voter. He'll join us coming up here in 10 minutes from now. Also, Sal Palantonio, another Hall of Fame voter. We'll get their thoughts and should we know who didn't vote for or who did vote for a candidate, we'll talk about that as well. One hour in the books. Two more to go on this Wednesday. Fritzie Seaton, Marv, Polly, yours truly, Dan Patrick Show. If you grew up in my household, then you probably went, oh, is that bacon? Date: January 28, 2026
Host: Dan Patrick & The Dan Patrick Show Team
Episode Focus: The Pro Football Hall of Fame’s exclusion of Bill Belichick from immediate induction, the process and ramifications of Hall of Fame voting, Mike McCarthy’s emotional introduction as Pittsburgh Steelers head coach, and reactions around NFL coaching hires.
The episode is dominated by the stunning news that Bill Belichick, widely regarded as one of the greatest NFL coaches, did not get inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this year—a decision that sparked debate over the integrity and consistency of the Hall's voting process. Dan and the team dissect the vote’s causes and consequences, speculate about the motivations of Hall voters, and discuss fallout for other would-be inductees. The show also covers Mike McCarthy’s tearful first press conference as Steelers coach, quick takes on other coaching hires, and listener reactions.
Tone: Engaged, incredulous, conversational, at times light-hearted (especially with McCarthy), but serious when addressing the Hall of Fame’s process.
Breaking News: Bill Belichick is not a Hall of Famer—at least not this year. Despite being a six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach and two-time winner as a DC, he did not receive the requisite 80% of votes for immediate induction.
(Dan Patrick, 03:04)
“Bill Belichick, not a Hall of Famer at least this year... Bill Belichick didn’t get 80% of the votes. Now there’s 50 voters, have to have at least 40 who say yay or nay. And apparently you had at least 11 voters who decided that Bill Belichick was going to have to wait.”
Voter Process Criticized: The Hall of Fame voting system is revealed to be opaque, leading to speculation about personal vendettas and inconsistency in justice for figures tainted by scandal.
(Dan Patrick, 05:40)
“Make this C-SPAN, make it, you know, PBS. Let us see what goes on, like one day—let us understand the importance of this… I’ve been lobbying for transparency.”
Grievances & Agenda? Multiple times, Dan speculates that “somebody had an agenda” due to deflategate & spygate legacies, and that perhaps the 11 voters were organized in advance to block Belichick, echoing reporting by Don Van Natta and ESPN. (Dan Patrick, 11:54)
“...maybe you had some subterfuge, something was orchestrated behind the scenes, people trying to gather enough votes. ‘We need 11 votes. Bill won’t get in. We’ll teach him.’ Now, whether that happened or not, there’s certainly been speculation reporting on that.”
Double Standards and Consistency: Dan challenges the logic of punishing Belichick for “football crimes” and notes that some players/coaches (e.g. Julius Peppers, who failed PED tests, or Ted Williams, who was standoffish with media) did not face the same penalty. (Dan Patrick, 16:52)
“Did Belichick cheat? Yes. In accordance to, you know, the commissioner, he cheated. Okay. He paid a price... I just hate when we pick and choose justice here when it comes to sports.”
Collateral Damage / Backlog: Other coaches and players will now have to wait yet another year, which may affect their ability to celebrate their induction while alive. (Dan Patrick, 13:20)
“But this also pushes back the other coaches who were up for Hall of Fame consideration. Does Belichick get in next year?.. you get this backlog and then you get more players who are going to come in.”
Need for Reform:
(Dan Patrick, 14:43)
“Because every year it’s somebody where you go, ‘well, Hall of Famer,’ and that’s the way it’s going to be. But this backlog here, they got to change that, because you got so many people, then they’re waiting for that knock on the door... And they deserve that.”
Was It Spygate or Attitude? Dan, Paulie, and Peter King (cited) discuss whether Belichick’s treatment of media was really at the root of his exclusion. (Paulie, 22:30)
“Do you think that the 11 voters who didn’t vote for Belichick used Spygate as the rationale, while it was really about how Bill treated their media brethren the past two decades?”
Peter King (via Dan):
(Dan Patrick, 21:49)
“Peter King...said whoever it was that couldn’t set aside Belichick being a jerk to them or who have sneered at how he’s conducted himself...got their way, proving yet again that no amount of power gets abused like hardly any at all. So congratulations to those who didn’t want him in. You got your pound of flesh.”
Consistency For Brady?
(Dan Patrick, 12:24)
“If you’re going to hold Belichick to a higher standard, then hold Brady to a higher standard as well.”
Votes Should be Public:
(Dan Patrick, 24:14)
“Anytime I voted for an award, I let people know who I voted for or if I didn’t vote for somebody. I believe in transparency because...this is the culmination and we should know why you don’t like somebody or why you do.”
On flawed voting (“knock at the door”):
On Belichick’s coaching greatness:
Emotional Return: McCarthy is visibly emotional at the start, referencing his Pittsburgh roots and the significance of “coming home” as head coach. (Mike McCarthy, 34:07)
“One day to put on the colors you wore since you brought home. I apologize...this city, this franchise, this fan base means the world to me because Pittsburgh’s my world and it’s just awesome to be back here.”
Emphasizing Tradition: Forecasts a continuation of the winning legacy. (Mike McCarthy, 35:05)
“My focus is singular and it’s time to bring another championship back to this great city. With that, I just want to make sure that when we do get that trophy...the seventh trophy in a case will start that victory parade at 1137 Greenfield Avenue.”
Cliché Game, Team Banter: The show’s panel had played a “McCarthy cliché game”—guessing which phrase he’d use (references to “hard working city”, “winning culture”, “lucky #7,” etc.)
(Marvin, 36:23-36:41)
“My new favorite number is lucky 7. Hold on tight to your terrible towels because I can assure you we’re about to go on a wild, exciting ride.”
Other Notable “Difficult” Inductees: Ted Williams, Julius Peppers, and noted cases where media relations didn’t affect voting as drastically. (Dan Patrick, 32:21-32:24)
“Ted wasn’t nice to anybody… He didn’t care. He was playing. If you liked him, great. If you didn’t, he was not trying to curry favor.”
Call-in Segment: Listeners reference possible biases (Bill Polian-Tony Dungy connection) and bring up the precedent of Bill Parcells being made to wait (39:42).
“For a six to eight-year stretch…him and LeBron were battling for who was the best player in the game and the youngest MVP. I would be surprised if at some point he doesn’t get in [the Hall of Fame].” (Dan Patrick, 47:39) “There was a three-year window where you could say that Derrick Rose was equal with LeBron James. He was an MVP, the youngest MVP, and then he got hurt… Reg is my guy. He made a mistake here.”
Dan’s Core Message:
The Hall of Fame voting process lacks transparency and consistency, with Belichick’s snub exposing personal biases and procedural flaws. The effect is a deepening backlog pushing deserving candidates—players and coaches—away from timely celebration. The solution, Dan suggests, is greater transparency and fairness in the process and recognition for those who’ve decisively shaped the game.
On McCarthy:
A well-covered, emotional homecoming that hits all the expected (and cliché-filled) notes; a nice palate cleanser to the controversy.
This summary captures the essential discussion, tone, notable arguments, and memorable moments from Hour 1 of The Dan Patrick Show (Jan 28, 2026), letting those who missed it follow every thread—from Belichick’s controversial snub to McCarthy’s teary-eyed homecoming.
