The big news is North Carolina has hired Bill Belichick after winning six Super Bowls in the NFL. Belichick is on to his next challenge and that's coaching in college, which is something he's never done before. And I think that the surprise is, well, he was going to be the NFL's all time victory holder. He would surpass Don Shula. But over the last year and a half, the league's interest in Belichick hasn't has been as robust as he he probably thought and certainly we thought as well. So he turned his attention to college or maybe college turned its attention to him. But as I said for the last couple of days I think he realized he was not going to get a job in the NFL. Plenty of other NFL head coaches have found success going to college. Jim Harbaugh with Michigan, Pete Carroll, usc. Nick Saban, who didn't coach well with the Dolphins, went to Alabama although he did well at lsu. So the transition from Belichick NFL to college football, ACC football, a football program at a basketball school. And there are a lot of people, I think there's a surprising amount of people, maybe more people who have a negative reaction to Bill succeeding than a positive reaction because we hear the same things, his age, relatability with an 18 or 19 year old nil transfer portal. What's he know about the college game. So these are all the things that. And it's fair to question this or at least observe this and give a, you know, reasonable answer of yes or no. He's going to be able to do this. He's the most prepared coach of all time. The fact that he had a 400 page dossier, he went in there and said, hey, here, I'll give you everything about your program. What I want, what I need. Assessing the acc. So he's going in prepared. It's not like he's going to go in and go, hey, what's this? Nil. That's name, image and likeness. Oh, now the transfer portal. Where is that? On campus? Where do, where do the kids come in from on the portal? No, no, it's just kind of a name. It's the transfer portal. Wait, they're getting paid. He's going to be prepared when he goes in. And plus, what is success for Bill Belichick in college? Nine wins, 10 wins. And you're also buying into Bill Belichick. You're buying into Carolina. You're buying into. Yes, they are a basketball school. You got the Jordan brand there as well. It's still powerful with Bill Belichick on the sidelines. He still knows how it's coaching football, whether it's high school, college, pro, you're coaching football. Nobody is better at adapting quarter to quarter, half to half, game to game than Bill Belichick. In the history of the sport, I have to believe you're going to take this job. He'll be all in on this job and he knows his son is going to be there with him. He's probably going to bring in a lot of his coaches he had in New England. You're getting Mike Lombardi, who's been around the NFL for decades. He'll be his gm. He's going to bring in experienced people just like Dion did. Remember when Deion got to Colorado, I said, dion will be successful if he brings in really good coaches because he'll be the CEO. And what do you have after one and a half years, two years, Deion has his team at least knocking on the door to be a playoff team next year, and they certainly were this year. Now, do I think that is what Bill's going to do? Well, he's not going to bring in his son, doesn't play quarterback. Is he going to be able to bring in a player like Travis Hunter, who everybody wanted and was going to go to Florida State? I think the key will be, does he get his quarterback just like he had in New England and they kept Tom there. You can't keep your quarterback in college. They'll stay, but maybe they'll stay for four years. Can you get a franchise type quarterback? Because if you go back and listen to what Bill Belichick said on the Pat McAfee show on Monday, he's looking at college football the way he did the NFL. It seems like college football is more like pro football. I've talked to a lot of college coaches about things like the salary cap and putting value on players and negotiating, kind of mixing all that together. So I think there are some similarities. From what I've heard, I haven't experienced it firsthand. Okay, what's the downside? He fails. If you're Caroline, you took a shot. Can you imagine that conversation with Mack Brown? Hey, Mack, we're going to go with somebody younger. He's a year younger than you. So you bring in Belichick. The relatability. I don't know how much he has to relate. Oh, is he going to go on the road and recruit? No, he's not. They have something called Zoom all of a sudden. Mom and dad, hey, Coach Belichick is on the Zoom wants to talk to you. I think that's probably pretty powerful. How many other college coaches. Dion Belichick, who else would you put in there? And you go, hey, stop everything. Coaches on the phone with me or on a Zoom. It's still a powerful brand there. Now, is he going to want to put up with all the smaller things? I don't think he's going to be dealing with the smaller things. He doesn't deal with Nil. He probably won't deal with transfer portal. Now everything is going to be run by him. There's no salary cap. You're playing in the ACC feels like it's up for grabs. If Carolina is getting money together, they're collective. Okay, if I just say to Bill Belichick, just coach, we have everybody else who would take care of other things. Dion doesn't do everything. Deon is a CEO. That's what Bill will be. But Bill is obviously a better coach than Dion. He's not as good a CEO, but he'll be a better coach. Now, the people you put around you, who do you recruit? And does this matter to these kids who are 18 or 19? Because if I'm 18 or 19, I may not really care about Bill Belichick. My dad or mom may care. My high school coach may care. I want to get ready to go to the NFL. That's what this is about. And I think Bill going there, Bill is, Bill's got a chip on his shoulder. I truly believe that, hey, Tom did this. And Tom went to Tampa. And meanwhile, I held on for four more years and we were terrible. And yeah, I did make the playoffs with Mac Jones, but it didn't end well. Tom, it feels weird though. Just like Tom had something to prove, at least he felt, hey, I can do this without Bill. Bill wants to prove that he can still be a great coach no matter where he's going. I thought he was going to stay in the NFL if he was going to coach again, but I didn't think he was going and said this. I didn't think he was coaching in the NFL again. I just didn't think he was coaching in college because I didn't know if he, like, I just want to coach and that's what it feels like. And you set your son up. He obviously wants to kind of put in place a system that his son will then inherit in, let's say three years. And it'll be successful and I'm sure Bill will stay on with the program, but I see, you know, far more positives than I do negative. But this whole out of touch thing, I don't know if Bill was ever in touch with the Patriots. You know, it's not like they were like, man, I really know him and yeah, he's got a great sense of humor. Okay. Relatability. An 18, 19 year old. I don't know what they're going to be asking from Bill. I don't know what Bill is going to be giving them other than, hey, I want to make you a player ready to play in the NFL. That's what they want to hear. How much do I get paid and am I going to play and hopefully I get a chance to play in the NFL. Yes.

[Marvin]

I'm curious what kind of player positionally is most interested in going to North Carolina now? Because if I was a player like, say like a Jaden Daniels type or something, be like, I don't know if that's the way I want to go, but if I'm a, you know, defensive lineman or offensive lineman, even, you know, linebackers, I'm be like, hell, yeah, this is exactly what's going to get me to the NFL. So I'm curious how the team will take shape based on that.

[Savannah Guthrie]

Yeah. And I, you know, Bill's whole thing is next guy up. Let's say you have somebody who wants $8 million and bill might say, no. We'll find somebody else. I don't think he'll have the patience for that, that he always was. Next man up with the Patriots and will probably be that way with North Carolina, but who cared about North Carolina prior to this? You know, the last time we talked about him is when they lost to a school named after a founding father. They lost. They gave up 70 points to Jimmy Madison. What do you. That's when we go, oh, my God, they could have scored 100 on North Carolina. Mack Brown's gotta go like, that's it. Nobody else cares. He put him on. He at least put him on the football map. Yes, it's a basketball school, just like Kentucky football. You know, Georgia basketball. Arkansas used to be a football school. Now it feels like it's a basketball school. It does happen. It does. But is it going to change there in North Carolina? It won't. If they win, people are still going to, you know, ask, you know, Hubert Davis, how's the team going to be now? Do you introduce Bill Belichick at a North Carolina basketball game? Right. You got to bring him out. Just don't have him do the Brian Kelly. Haven't even won all my game. If he comes up with a Southern accent, I'm going to call BS on Belichick.

And what he says is, and he's going to pull a trestle. And when we play Duke on October 12, we're winning.

He gets the rivalry. He gets us. He gets us.

He knows who we are and what matters.

It's just when he says, you know, I saw an article. It's like, hey, he's going to win the press conference. Really? When is Bill won a press conference? I get it. Maybe Pat McAfee unlocked the personality chest that he has the cabinet there. It's like, hey, man, he. That dude is ape. He's a talking hairdo there. No, Bill will talk to football people. He doesn't want to talk to us. He doesn't want to talk to, you know, the media. But I think, Bill, we're talking about North Carolina football. That's a win, dog. That's a win. Yes, Marvin.

The most important thing regarding this entire situation is what color sweatshirt is Belichick going to wear? Because I'm not sure if he's going to rock the powder blue.

You know what's interesting about that is that my. You know how your eyes are like, your brain can play tricks on you. I read that it's wildly successful, and it's actually widely. All right. Anywho, Todd has. Do you want Bill Belichick to be successful? Will Bill Belichick ever coach an NFL game? We have more likely to happen over the next four years. Bill Belichick will be out of college football or in the College Football Playoff.

Oh, I don't think people look at Don Shula as the greatest coach of all time because he has the most wins. That. It's all about super bowl rings. You know, Shula's place in history is secure, but I think it's about how many super bowl rings you have.

Yes, but if there's one fella right now who does care about Don Shula's numbers, it's got to be Bill Belichick, right?

[Savannah Guthrie]

Are you saying that he couldn't get a job in the NFL if it was that important? Don't you hold out hope that you can get a job in the NFL? And I've been saying all along, I just. I think that these teams don't want to turn their team, franchise over to Bill Belichick. They just don't. But I can't look at this and go, how long is he going to be there? What's the. What's the career expectancy of coaches in the NFL now? Three years. Can Bill survive three years? Can he turn the team around in three years? I believe so, but I just don't think these general managers, presidents, owners wanted to turn it over to Bill Belichick, and that's why he took the North Carolina job. The bigger surprise is, was there another college coach or college program that reached out to him and said, oh, my God, Belichick wants to coach college. By then he was all in with Carolina, and his dad coached there, an assistant coach back, I think, in the 50s. I don't know what Bill remembers from that or his father told him about that experience. College football certainly changed an awful lot since the 50s. But how did it start? Does Bill reach out? Does Carolina reach out now? We're going to find out kind of the embryonic stages of this over the next week or so. Maybe when he's on McAfee, that he can say, can we get specific here who reached out to whom? But I got the over under for wins from DraftKings this morning. North Carolina wins in 2025. Paulie, I'm going to start with you.

I was going to say one of those other two numbers, but they were taken. So I figured it's got to be six and a half. Then if it's not those two, it.

Is six and a half. Six and a half wins. That'll be a win for the critics, where they go. Yeah. See, I don't expect miracles right away. Just like with Dion. They won one game, they won four. Now you know, what are they going to win this year? 12 games, 11 games. It'll take him a little while. And Dion was a great salesman. But Deion had the advantage of having his son, who is going to be the number one quarterback, taken and the number one player taken, Travis Hunter. You start with those two guys anywhere. If you said Belichick got those two guys, you would pencil them in for 10 wins this year. Can he get a couple of those impact players? Can he get those guys who normally would go to Clemson or Florida State in the acc? That'll be the key, yes.

I don't think he does the big smile thing. I think he plays a little, like, you know, I'm still Bill Belichick. I don't need this attention. It's great that you put me on the big screen, but I got work to do.

That's what's going to be weird for me, is we just had a year of seeing, like, wow, Bill Belichick can smile. Bill Belichick tells stories. Bill Belichick laughs. Bill Belichick has jokes. This is amazing. Look at this personality. And now what he's going to go back to. Now I'm standing behind the podium, so I'm just going to be this guy, really.

Seton brought up a great point this morning. We were talking about this, and Seton goes, yeah, breaking news. Can we get breaking news there? Seaton brought up a great point. There you go. Seaton's got to provide the sound effects, too. But Seaton was saying that. Here's what. You go ahead and tell him. Your great, great idea or your great observation with Bill Belichick.

You're going to have to be more.

Specific that he likes talking to football people.

Oh, yeah, yeah, right. Part of the reason that we're seeing his personality so much is because when he's on with Pat McAfee. Pat McAfee is a football guy. When he's on with the Mannings, Eli and Peyton are football guys. He likes talking football with football people. And if you're somebody holding a notepad taking down quotes, he doesn't. Why am I going to talk to you?

[Savannah Guthrie]

Yes, he does talk down to us.

[Marvin]

What am I going to talk to you for? Like, you're the dude on that side. Yeah, I like talking to the people on this side.

[Savannah Guthrie]

The great unwashed that's us. Doesn't have time for us.

[Marvin]

Yeah, I mean, I kind of get it sometimes. I really, really do. Just based on the wave, watching, the way media behaves as a hive, you know, I definitely get it.

And that's why when we would try to get interviews with Belichick at the Mothership, you would normally send somebody who played the game, although he had great respect for Chris Berman. But you send somebody that Bill will talk to because he feels like, all right, you're kind of, you're not on my level, but you're in the room, you're in the neighborhood with me. And I think he really respected McAfee. Probably, you know, the check that he wrote as well, but still.

[Marvin]

Correct.

[Savannah Guthrie]

McAfee is a very bright guy. The Manning cast with the Manning brothers. He feels like he can talk to them, not explain things or, you know, have to talk down to somebody. But Bill's going to go back to being Bill Belichick. I don't think that all of a sudden his 23 year old girlfriend or being on TV with McAfee or the Mannings all of a sudden unlock that personality. It's like, I'm free at last. I can be myself. I love musicals. You know what else I love? I don't think that's going to happen. I'm a devastating cook. I love to cook. I don't think that's going to happen with Bill. He's going to go back to being a curmudgeon. That's. That's going to be his Persona. So when somebody says he's going to win the press conferences, I don't think so. Don't think so. All right, so what's the wording on the Belichick poll question for hour one?

Well, we're going to put up a few of them there because we got a lot of good options.

I think we'll just start off with something basic like it'll be successful or a disaster.

Okay, that's fine. So widely or wildly successful or a complete disaster. Correct. All right, fair enough. Paulie also brought this up. He had a good idea before the start of the show. Yeah. Yes. Unbelievable this morning. Good ideas. Does Bill Belichick continue to do the Pat McAfee show next year? Wood McAfee would Belichick, because that's free advertising. Bill shows up once a week talking football.

Paul, historically, Bill Belichick is on absolute lockdown during a football season. Complete lockdown with immediate. Just the bare minimum. But like you said, this is. He'll be in his UNC office in UNC gear. Do a little NFL, keep your toe in it, talk about a little bit, and then say, what's up? You know, Pat's. Pat's going to play to the crowd, play to Bill, and you put them on demanding cast, what, six times, seven times you get paid. And free advertising. There's no downside to it for Bill. Younger crowd.

[Savannah Guthrie]

I don't find him interesting on McAfee if he's at Carolina because he famously says he didn't watch college football. Now all of a sudden, like his. The one game he watched was Army, Navy. He never watched college football. Now, when you're totally immersed in college football, is he going to be watching the NFL? I can't imagine there'd be no reason for him to be watching the NFL. And if you're on McAfee, you want him talking NFL, not. Let me tell you about the game coming up with Clemson. Yes, Todd.

He doesn't need the money, but I agree with Paul. It's easy cash. It's great publicity for the school. And coaches in college especially do all kinds of radio and TV shows. So it's not any groundbreaking thing. I'd be surprised if he wouldn't make time to still do that on some level.

I can't wait for. If I told you three years ago there's going to be a college game day next year with Nick Saban interviewing Bill Belichick at North Carolina.

You would have said what?

Yeah, yeah. You know, it's one of those where I go, I think I've seen everything. I've been doing this for over 40 years. And then all of a sudden, yesterday happens. I never say never. I never say something doesn't have a chance. But when this first started, I thought, wow, this is Bill. Bill is doing a solid for North Carolina. And then all of a sudden, I'm thinking maybe it's a negotiating ploy with, hey, Jacksonville, you better pony up. Bill's getting $10 million at North Carolina for five years. He would have gotten a lot more than he would have gotten 20 million, you know, if he was going to coach in the NFL. But this isn't about money. From the standpoint of now, he has opened the door and set the stage for his son, who's a defensive coordinator at Washington, to be able to come in and be a head coach in the NFL or college. I don't think Bill coaches in the NFL again. I think if he coaches again, it'll be lacrosse assistant Yes. I just, I don't, I just don't see. I don't think the NFL is going to reach out to him, that's all.

Yeah, Pauline, going back to before Bill took this job the past three or four days, I thought heard a lot of people, NFL type people say, oh, he won't go to college, he has unfinished business. He has to get Shula's record. I think that's so overblown. That record does nothing for him. The rings do it all. Everyone says he's the greatest coach in history. This North Carolina does way more for his legacy if it works out well than Don Shula's record. Way more.

[Savannah Guthrie]

Stuart Mandel, the athletic who will join us coming up a little bit later on, he opens up his column by saying, congratulations North Carolina, you managed to hire someone completely unqualified to be your next football coach. You did that thing so many schools do when they try to win the press conference instead of win football games. It rarely works. Hill, Jonas, coming up a little bit later on, the column doesn't get any nicer. Just letting you know. I was surprised because we've known Stuart Mandel for a long time. He's not a hot take guy.

[Marvin]

Completely unqualified as a statement.

[Savannah Guthrie]

Yeah. He also said, I realize I may get excommunicated from the football world for daring to question the merits of a six time super bowl champion coach, but let's remove the name Bill Belichick and replace it with Coach X. Here is who North Carolina just hired. And then he goes into all of these things that he's never dealt with, the transfer portal. Is he going to be recruiting? He's never recruited, all of these things. I mean, I'm surprised that Stewart would go in and, you know, not give Belichick the credit of attention to detail. No, he is not recruited. No nil transfer portal, all of those things. Do you think that he'll be up to speed pretty soon on that? I do. He's, he's as buttoned up as any coach in the history of coaches being buttoned up. And he has something to prove. He has to prove that he can coach again, which is amazing. The greatest football coach of all time. Probably feels like I have to prove that I can coach again and I'm going to do it at a basketball school. I think it's pretty amazing. Jake in Buffalo. Hi, Jake. What's on your mind? Hey, D.P. i just wanted your thoughts given that North Carolina isn't just a football school. They also have that top tier basketball team how do you think it's going to work when the NIL fund has to be split across both those programs? Do you think Belichick and this pro style program he's talked about are going to be enticing enough for the younger kids to maybe have them take less money than other schools who are solely focused on football might offer? I don't know. I don't know what the collective is going to be. Is it going to be Ohio State money, $20 million? Probably not, but he needs to find his quarterback. You find your quarterback. Now all of a sudden Bill can say, I'm going to take care of the defense. Maybe brings in Josh McDaniels and says, Josh, you take care of the offense. Mike Lombardi, longtime football guy, hey, Mike, you take care of the nil. You take care of transfer. Portal. Like this is how it's all delegated. He's not going to do everything. He's not the GM where he was in New England. They're going to take some things off his plate. I would just say, Bill, coach. You coach. Because we will have an advantage every single game that we go into. Why? Because we have that guy as our head coach. Edwin in North Carolina. Hi, Edwin.

So I think the window for him to go back to the NFL is closed because of his age. But, you know, like you said, I think bringing in Josh McDaniels maybe and his son as defensive coordinator, I don't know. I just want to hear more about your thoughts on that. I'll hang up.

All right, thank you. Thank you, Edwin. And I just heard from a great college, college source, and he just sent an email. He said that Belichick was pursued by the chair of the board of trustees. So you're going all the way up now. Everybody's going to be in with you. This isn't just the athletic director. And my source goes on to say, overall, North Carolina is comfortable taking these steps as part of a broader strategy to build and retrofit itself to be ready as a. Get ready for this. A prospective SEC or Big Ten member. So this is. This is a bigger picture here, but I think the biggest thing is going to be the financial commitment. So you have that. My source goes on to say in addition to staffing, it will become clear that the school is increasing its nil commitment more than get ready for this 500%. I'd say they're all in. Now you have the financial backing. You can staff however you want to. Most of the guys he's bringing in probably are not working right now. Now you say Bill, you coach. These things are set up like corporations. They're businesses. This is about money making and a bigger picture. According to my source of can we be worthy for the SEC or the Big Ten down the road here? So bigger play. All right, just getting started. We're back after this. It's not like you go, that guy's really figured it out. The transfer portal, nil. He's going to be fine. If they have money in place, his staff in place, and he'll. They're going to ask him to coach. And once again, he shows up, he will have an advantage over every coach in America because he's Bill Belichick. Now. Is he going to get the players? Not the first year, but just like I said with Dion, if you didn't get him the first year, you weren't going to get him the second year, and that's what happened. And great time to hire him mid December. He's got the transfer portal. Like all of this is unfolding right in front of him. Timing is great, but I really think you embarrass yourself when you question if Belichick is going to be able to figure out the transfer portal or Nil. First of all, he doesn't have to deal with Nil. They have people who do that transfer portal. They have people who do that recruiting. Put him on a zoom call. You don't think that's impactful? The Patriots were left in a shambles. And when in college football, you got to find your quarterback every couple of years, this is what's going to happen.

But there's no draft. There's no rules, Sean.

You know, there's a lot of competition out there.

[Savannah Guthrie]

Yeah, I know, but you're still Bill Belichick. You have to adhere to a draft order trying to find your guy. And he's not alone at not finding quarterbacks. There's a lot of teams that have not found quarterbacks. But now you don't have any restrictions. You can poach somebody if you want to. You can have somebody already made, just like, you know, Brian Kelly did with Jaden Daniels. Just bring him in, pay him money, let him go out there and win for you.

Now, you know what? Alabama, Georgia, Oregon, all have more players going to the NFL than North Carolina will.

[Savannah Guthrie]

Yes, yes. They've. They've been doing this a long time, Sean. That. That. I mean, do you really think that's the downside, that he's not going to get a quarterback? He couldn't get a quarterback.

Well, maybe Michael Lombardi can help him and maybe his cousin Jimmy Jimerson, because I think Jimmy Jimmer is somehow related to Michael Lombardi.

All right, well, thank you, Sean. Mack Brown got Drake. May I just believe Belichick can get a couple of quarterbacks. You can't do that in the NFL. In college you can. He'll find. I don't know. And look, I'm not trying to convince you. I'm just telling you why I'm convinced. Just because I don't doubt him. Now, did he lose touch? Was there ego in play with the. Yes, all of those things. Do I think this was, you know, about Belichick and then Tom or Tom, then Belichick. I don't get caught up in it. You have to have one to have the other. If you don't have both, like this is Kansas City, you got Andy and you got Patrick, then you can have success. You can't have an average coach and, you know, a Hall of Fame quarterback or vice versa. Yes, yes.

I feel like it's pretty well documented at this point, too, that the Patriots started losing the more the crafts got involved in player decisions or in running the team and not just the business. Yeah, and that's. That's pretty well documented at this point, that the more, you know, the Crafts were sort of forcing themselves into the locker room. The less games the Patriots won.

[Savannah Guthrie]

But you know, people have pointed out, oh, do you want this guy who is grumpy and introverted? How many other coaches do you assess their personality? Like, when's the last time somebody said, you know, Dabo's personality? How did Nick Saban do with his personality? It's the same as Belichick's. Belichick knows what he's walking into. This is what Saban walked away from because he wasn't prepared for this.
