I'm Jake Hofer and this is back 40, a limited series show on Wire to Hunt, part of Meat Eaters Podcast Network. Each episode, I'll be asking eight whitetail hunting pros a focused, thought provoking question about hunting and land management. How do I hunt the best part of the farm with less than ideal access?
Devin
Should you?

That's what the real question is.

You are listening to the Dan Patrick show on Fox Sports Radio. What up? Good morning to you, Dan Patrick show, fox sports radio iHeartradio app. You got the Doug Outli show crew in the house for the next. Is this a three or four hour show?
Devin
Three. We're doing three.
Jake Hofer
Just. Just want to make sure it's three hour show. Some reason I had my head. I can do four hours today.
Devin
Bonus hour. Why not? It's a Thursday.
Jake Hofer
Yeah, I just. I don't know. I. I don't know why I had that in my head. Dan, good morning to you.
Devin
Good morning to you, Doug.
Jake Hofer
By the way, we're broadcasting live from sunny Southern California, which is. Was my home, not my home. So it's good to be back with the boys profit on the ones and twos, and our esteemed producer hiker extraordinaire, Jason Stewart, who's at Dodgers, my Angels, my Brewers. Hey, can we talk about something for a second? We're going to get into the Taylor Swift on the. On the podcast, right? He joined the Kelsey's. I think that's a. I think it's. It's. I mean, great sports talk morning radio fodder. It's awesome. But this George Webb place. Okay, so here's why it's. We have a lot of people talking about things that they don't know. It's something that frustrates me a great deal, but I actually live in the state of Wisconsin, and I didn't know about George Webb. I am very fluent in several other burger places that are Wisconsin. You know Culver's. I know the Culver's is also national. Freddy's, which is also national, but amazing burgers. I didn't know about this George Webb place, but I have a bunch of questions, Dan.
Devin
Well, Doug, I'm going to tell you, I'm not sure I can answer them because it is more of a Milwaukee thing than Wisconsin thing.
Jake Hofer
So just a Milwaukee place.
Devin
Yeah. Yeah. Yes. And so when we talk about. I know a little of the history tied in with the brewers winning streaks and what they've done, but I can't say I've ever been to a George Webb restaurant.
Jake Hofer
Okay, but. But here's the question. So you get a. You get free what? Burger. You get a free burger.
Devin
Free burger. If the brewers win 12 in a.
Jake Hofer
Row, and they won 12 in a row with a dominating win yesterday over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Right?
Devin
Yes. And this is something that isn't just if USC wins on Saturday, you get a free donut and then it goes away the next year. This has been a thing with George Webb for decades. Even going back to when the Braves were in Milwaukee, there was a tie in to it. But it's happened so infrequently that it becomes such a huge story. But Brewer fans know about it because of the history of 1987. It did happen in 2018. But yes, the free hamburger on the 12th straight win has been the talk of the town.
Jake Hofer
Okay, so you have to have a ticket in order to get the burger. Anybody gets a burger.
Devin
You could show up to a George Webb on a specific day and anybody can get a hamburger.
Jake Hofer
Okay, this is how you know you're low budget, right? If you're going to get a free burger, do you get the fries and a drink and pay for it or do you just go, no, I'll just take some water. I just want some water. I'm going to have a burger.
Devin
Listen, you're talking to a guy. Chick Fil A used to run a promo during the college football season where if you wear a team T shirt you'll get a free chicken sandwich. I went to a couple different ones here in Southern California.
Jake Hofer
I get it. You're talking to a guy. Who in college do they. Does the Italian fast food chain Fazoli still exist? Don't know. Do we, can we, can we use the Google machine? I think it still does, but it is far, far diminished. Yeah, I mean like, who would have thought that Drive thru Spaghetti probably not the best idea, but in Stillwater, Oklahoma they closed at 10 o' clock. And when you're low budget, you pull up and you order like the most. I just want like spaghetti and marinara. And then you pull up, you're like, hey man, you guys gonna throw away all those breadsticks? Like, how about you throw some breadsticks in? You know, get chicken in there. How about you throw some chicken in there? We used to do that with KFC as well. Like you pull up like, hey, it's 9:56. Guess you can throw all that chicken away, right? Just throw it out in the bucket. Sir, you only ordered a two piece. How about 15 biscuits as well?
Devin
I used to work in a mall in college, so. Same thing. What are the Cinnabon? What's the Cinnabon gonna do with these cinnamon rolls that have sat in the window for the last four hours?
Jake Hofer
I think Jimmy John's has a system in place now. At least it was when I still live Near a Jimmy John's where it's like all their bread that's about to go a day old. I think you get a bunch of it for like a buck. Yeah, I think that, I mean, you know, obviously give it away to homeless and to other. Other places and. But. But I mean, if removing the. The chance to have to transport it. That was the first thing that came to my mind is how many of my friends would go to, like, Dan. Multiple George Webb's. Like, they went to all five. George Webb's got five burgers. And then, you know, you're low budget if you just go, no, no, I just have the burger. You don't have fries? You know, a drink? Nope, just the burger. Just the burger.
Devin
The.
Jake Hofer
Gosh.
Devin
I think it was in 1987. Well, 1987, the brewers opened the season with 13 straight wins. It's one of the most storied pieces of Milwaukee Brewer history. But I saw a clip from a newscast from that year where they thought they were going to have to give away 110,000 hamburgers because of that streak. And I would assume that this would be a lot more.
Jake Hofer
And it's been a crazy, like, couple of days in Milwaukee for people who don't know. Was it Saturday night? Yeah, Saturday night. Massive flooding that. That went into Sunday and. And a little bit Monday as well. And then you factor in this unbelievable season that they're having where they've won 28 of their last 32 baseball games. 28 of last 32 baseball. And the juxtaposition of a small market franchise versus, for example, the Dodgers. Sorry to do this to you there, J. Stu, but. And the Dodgers, they're not terrible, but, man, you get swept by the Angels and now you get the Padres next, and they spent a bajillion dollars on their baseball team. It. It's one of those. That's. That's baseball, right?
Devin
Yes, it is. But there is something in the water. There's something that's going on.
Jake Hofer
Milwaukee.
Devin
Yes, it's great. Yes, it truly is. And it is. It's one of those stories like I. For most recent history, I think kind of how the Royals kind of captured Kansas City. It feels that way from afar in just talking to my friends back in Milwaukee. But, Doug, remember Bob Uecker passes away in January. So now there's this whole thinking of they're having some help from above. And everybody that has left, whether it be Craig Counsel, Corbin Burns suffers the injury. It was a couple of years ago, but still, he was a Brewer. That you thought could be a Brewer for a long time. Devin Williams goes to New York. All the guys that left are kind of crapping out right now. Maybe not council as much, but still, brewers now have a seven and a half game lead on the Cubs in the Central. Where all of these then new guys that come in, Andrew Vaughn, Quinn Priester, all these guys who are having resurgence sort of years, like, where did that come from? Yeah, there's, there's something going on and I think that's, that's going to be a story you're probably going to start to hear a lot of over the, over September and hopefully brewers fan for brewers fans into October and maybe even longer. But it's been a crazy, crazy season with all these things intertwining.
Jake Hofer
He's Dan Byron, Doug Gottlieb, Jason Stewart and the crew, and Chris Perfett here. Dan Patrick Show, Fox Sports Radio, iheartradio Apple. Yeah, I'm going to go to the doubleheader Monday at Wrigley because they play, I think they play five against the Cubs. Yeah, right. Play five against the Cubs. So as much as it feels like it's either going to be, it's, it's going to be, you know, a runaway or it, it could be close in a, in a week.
Devin
Well, you tell me. You've been down there. You were down there recently. Yeah, at American Family Field.
Jake Hofer
Time I go is the time the Cubs beat them. I went to the day game, sure.
Devin
But there's, there's a vibe.
Jake Hofer
I mean, they've.
Devin
Yes, they've.
Jake Hofer
Well, they're selling out. It's. The atmosphere is awesome. If you haven't been to that place, I think that place is super cool. Super cool. Kind of a weird. I mean, it's not a weird location, but it's not the, in the most new age stadiums built in downtown. It's not, it's, you know, 10 minutes outside of downtown or whatever. But first, I love that place. I think it's really cool. And, and, you know, the windows get all fogged up when they close it. There's no air conditioning in the summer when they open it. It's spectacular. But yeah, I mean, Matt Arnold's built a team that's really athletic and they make plays. And part of this recent streak has been done without Misarowski, the young pitcher that everybody said is the best young arm in baseball outside of Paul Skeens, is, Has not been pitching in the rotation. Yeah, I think we think he's missed two or two starts or so.
Devin
And you you mentioned Matt Arnold. I left out another name. And talking about the GU elsewhere, David Stearns, for years when he was in charge of the brewers front office, was rumored to be the apple of the eye of so many different teams. Kind of steps aside, lets Matt Arnold take over, and then ultimately Stearns leaves and goes and takes over the Mets. And the Mets right now are having their own issues to deal with. So there's another name to add to the list of everybody that is the people that have left Milwaukee that are finding tougher times than what the brewers have right now. Their run differential is plus 159. It's.
Jake Hofer
It's, it's a real thing. It's a real thing. It's. It's not. They're not winning one run. Just. Just one run games. Okay, here's what I want to do. Let's. Let's talk the Kelsey podcast. Okay, so the first thing is it's like a competition with Rogan and Trump, right? For how many what live views and then overall views. J. Stu, is that. Is that right? We had this discussion, I think, two days ago. Is Rogan having Trump on, I believe is the most downloaded podcast in American podcast or audio history. Right. So, like, do we care about that level of competition? Dan, you listen to it in its entirety.
Devin
I watched most of it. Yeah. I put it on the TV last night.
Jake Hofer
What do you think?
Devin
It was a lot longer than I thought. I thought it was going to be like 50 minutes and it ended up being a two hour podcast. I thought that at the end of it, I was curious on what. What was the goal of it? Was it for football fans to learn about Taylor Swift or for Taylor Swift fans to be brought into the Kelsey world? And I think that there was a bit of both happening there. I still am wondering, ultimately, I think it was the better opportunity for Taylor Swift and her fans to hear her stuff on a platform that was safe for her in a way where, and I don't mean this in a negative way, but to form an image that she wanted to portray because she could feel more natural and not necessarily feel like she was going to get blindsided by anything. So I thought it was a very comfortable situation. The most uncomfortable person I thought was Travis because I thought Jason did a great job in it, but he almost played the part of the third wheel because it was so much about Taylor and her learning football and talking about the new album.
Jake Hofer
You know, here's the first thing I think we need to get to. There was for a long time, there was this is a sham, right? This is a sham. This is. Travis is really smart. You know, he did the reality show dating 32 women, you know, back in the day. You know, Travis has done a lot of things that have brought a lot of publicity outside of being a great football player. There was a thought for a good amount of time that this was just kind of a publicity stunt. Right. Are we okay putting that to bed?
Devin
Yes.
Jake Hofer
Okay. J. Stu, you were for a long time, and I know you changed probably six months ago, nine months ago, whatever. Were you okay completely putting that to bed?
Doug Gottlieb
Yeah. No, I love love and I could see love. And I think that was one of the takeaways that I got watching this thing is that these two 30 somethings are giddy in love, which goes against my initial instinct that this was a sham for publicity. I fully apologized about six months into that, by the way, and that was my takeaway last night. These are like two teenagers in love. And who doesn't like seeing that?
Jake Hofer
Nobody. Nobody. And to answer your question, Dan, I think those are all ancillary benefits. I mean, this, I. Here's, here's my. Just a guess. Okay, It's a guess. It's. They do this podcast and there's always been a. You should come on the podcast. I don't know, you know, do I think that, that it brings Taylor Swift's fans to a safe platform where you learn about her this, this side of her? Yes. Do I think it blows up the podcast to where now, like, that's a, that's a staple. You know, people put in their queue that never put in a queue before. And the download numbers from here, historically, no matter who they have on, will be. Yes. But I, I gotta tell you, these are all really rich people. They were going to be successful anyway. And I just think it's probably fun to, To. To do something that you've never done before with somebody who's your boyfriend, who you trust with his brother, and they're all, they're funny. And she probably always wanted to do it. And they're like, you know what? Let's just do it right before football season, you know, when you got, you got a little space. Let's just have fun and see how it goes. I honestly think that's the. It's like we, we all think everybody's calculated. And maybe they are, maybe they are, but there's also the. In my mind, I don't think it was a calculated move. I think it was. Taylor's always want to do it. She's Got time to do it. It'd be fun to do. Let's just do it.
Devin
I think it was calculated in the fact that the album was going to be announced. I don't think that there was a grand scheme to try to pull the wool over anyone's eyes. But Jason Kelsey did start the podcast by saying, I'm sorry we lied. We said we were going to come back on August 27, but things change, plans change, and this is the reason why. And so they do the podcast two weeks prior to when they said they were going to resume the podcast, and then it's the two hour conversation with Taylor Swift. So I agree with much of what you said. I know we've got a little of what the podcast sounded last night, and I don't know if you. I thought Jason did a really good job in talking about and asking her about the music portion of it. At one point, he kind of told Travis to shut up. But it was also interesting to hear Taylor Swift actually talk about her football learning experience and what she didn't know and now what she does know.
Jake Hofer

I became like a person who was running through the halls of my house screaming, we drafted Xavier Worthy. And my friends are like, what is. Who body snatched you? This is. This is. What do you mean? We drafted Savior Worthy.
Noah
I forget where I was, but you were the first person to tell me that. Screeching in the draft. No, I was screeching.
Jake Hofer
I couldn't believe it. I was freaking out.

Devin
I mean, that's how you played it on the, on the playground growing up. So I understand if you hadn't like.
Jake Hofer
No, you don't understand. I thought it was like, Jared Goff is here and Josh Allen's here and they're going to be like, they blow a whistle and then they, they go at each other and they're like, I mean, who's going to win?
Noah
That's actually, I would love to see.
Devin
Jared Goff play some defense. Let's see Jared Goff on defense.
Noah
Got some ideas.
Jake Hofer

Columbia Morning Kia Dan Patrick Show, Fox Sports Radio. Dan Byer in the house. J Stew in the house, Chris Perfett, the ones and twos. Beautiful morning in sunny Southern California. Can't beat it. Cannot beat it. Mark Dominic's going to join us in a second and I know, Dan, we want to talk about Shador moving, moving forward. I do. I just think this is such a fascinating social experiment because people want to make it about all these things that it's not about, you know, and we have a tendency to latch on to a story a year and it becomes some, some sense of like the man trying to keep somebody down. And yeah, I, you know, you want to talk about whether he's a victim or not. And that's really what. What we do. It's like, yeah, I. Why is, why are we this way? I think as sports fans, is it politics creeping in? Is it a societal problem? But we make it into being about something it's not about, you know, all this social stuff and whatever. I mean, I'm just wondering why you think that we have this pattern as Americans that we pick like one guy per year and we make it about something it's not about.
Devin
Yeah, it's it. I'll tell you what, it's been a bit of a whirlwind this week and I don't think that Shador has really had a part of it. It's everything that's around Shador.
Jake Hofer
Let's welcome in Mark Dominic. He joins us on the Doug Gottlieb show on a weekly basis. So we thought let's bring him on the Dan Patrick show because he's awesome. He's a former General Manager, Tempe Buccaneers, 20 plus years, the National Football League. You name the job, he's had it and still works it, still covers it, still knows it. Mark, let me just ask you first in terms of watching the All 22, what do you think of how Shador played in their opening exhibition game?
Noah
Well, thanks for having me on, guys. I think he played well. I mean, when you go back and you look where some of the ball placements were. Yeah. Were there some throws he'd like to have back? Of course, every quarterback, especially their first time. But just in terms of the arm movement, the ball velocity, the little pieces, it was like, okay, that's encouraging. That's what I kind of envisioned Shador to try to look like to be when you're playing out there for the Cleveland Browns. And so I was, I took it away as game. You know what? I think he'll be a starter for the Cleveland Browns. It won't be week one, but I do think he'll start this year for Cleveland.
Devin
What does it mean for Dylan Gabriel? Because he's the third round pick and seems to be in this quarterback sandwich, if you will, between everybody else. But what does it mean for the third rounder?
Noah
Well, I mean, I know there's whatever. There's some type of rumor that they're possibly going to trade Dylan Gabriel. You know, he's got his give to the football field. He's, you know, hopefully getting healthy now get back out there. Look, they're going to keep three quarterbacks. I think they'll keep Joe Flacco, they'll keep the two rookies and they'll let this thing play out over time. There's no rush here for Cleveland. They're wanting to see both guys kind of progress and see what they can do. But for whatever reason, Cleveland has the injury at quarterback and it just can't get away from it. We've seen this before, right, with the Ravens again at that corner but the Ravens have had that kind of an injury situation where you've seen the Ravens and the running backs all went down or the, you know, now the DBs are going down for the Ravens, you know, for whatever horrible event for the Cleveland Browns, it's now their quarterback position can't stay healthy.
Jake Hofer
So, I mean, we haven't mentioned Deshaun Watson, who's like training, coming back from an Achilles tear that he tore and then re injured as. As he was rehabbing. Everyone who's a Cleveland Brown quarterback seems to be injured. Okay, let's, let's scatter around the league a little bit. There's growing concern, at least when you read, when you watch about Caleb Williams. What have you heard in regards to how they feel like he's doing with the new system in Chicago?
Noah
Well, they're going to. There's not much they can say, but they're hopeful, like they think that things are going to go well. Obviously, it sounds like the starters are playing again, this and that. Caleb's going to get out there and show what he can do. You know, we'll. We'll know. Doug, I know it's hard, you know, watching your practice, you know, you know, saying things it hasn't been the best of press conferences. You haven't heard the Jaden Daniels like, wow, look at how hard he's worked and he's put all this effort in. It's just kind of like, okay, you know, we got to figure out what we can do with this guy. You know, this is a make or break year. He's been out there on the field last year, he's now on the field this year. You know, I've always said, I've always worried if he's going to put enough time into it. I'm sure he's put good time into it. I really, as a former GM and anything, I just, I want to see him in the regular season. I want to see how he reacts, how much is he growing? Because you, as we all know, like, year one to year two is the leap for players. It just is because the fact is they're not worried about vertical jumps. They're not worried about 40 times. They're not on these visits or to all these different, you know, of, you know, pro teams trying to figure out who likes him. They're focused on the playbook and how to learn it and how to grow. And so if Caleb Williams comes out and starts slow, it's a huge concern that they've got this quarterback picked wrong. But if he comes out and he plays consistent because again, he played good comparatively to Trevor Lawrence is for sure. Caleb Williams played well. It's just that we've got him on a pedestal and there's so much potential there in the tough division. We'll see if he can take the next step. I'm concerned because I never felt like he could in the first place.
Devin
I don't disagree with you, but the one thing that rubs me the wrong way, Mark, about this is Ben Johnson's got his new deal his first year, you know, five year contract. Ryan Polls now gets an extension to line up with that. Why so quick to move off of Caleb considering how much of a disaster last year was? Like, how can we really take last year and count it against him considering Shane Waldron was dismissed midseason? Eber Fluss is gone, you know, in his first year. Like how much can we really hold last year against Caleb Williams?
Noah
A little bit. And that's what I said. And I agree with you, Dan. I think that when you watch last year's overall production, I think because Jaden Daniels played so well, we kind of like Caleb really struggled. Caleb actually played pretty good as a rookie. You know, as with everything that you're talking about and how he performed. Just like I said, the trick is does he take a step in a Ben Johnson offense? It's just that it hasn't felt warm and fuzzy, right? It hasn't felt like everyone's kind of wrapped their arms around Caleb. Like this has been amazing and we're really excited. It's been more a little bit hands off, like we're work in progress. You know, we're trying to get more consistent, you know, those kind of things. So you just read the tea leaves and say, okay, let's see. I mean Caleb Williams was starting quarterback for this year and probably next year no matter what, because you take a guy number one overall, you're going to give him every shot. I mean, I remember as a GM I drafted a corner in the third round and he got four years to try to become starting cornerback. If he'd have been drafted in the sixth round, I probably would have cut him after the first year. Try to put him on the practice squad. So where you're taken gives you that opportunity to stay longer. And even if it's frustrating for fans to sit there and go eyes a bum, well, you know what, Ryan Poles can get fired too. Just like players get cut after one year of an extension, GM doesn't mean that they're going to stay just because they had an extension. Owners can afford to, you know, eat these contracts like never before. You know, 10 years ago, it was hard to, you know, if you did an extension for a player to move away from that player. Now you can easily manipulate it through this hour cap and where the numbers are.
Jake Hofer
J.J. mcCarthy, what's the, what's the reaction up there?
Noah
Yeah, you know, it's, it feels like it's been good. You know, it didn't. If everything feels like it's like, okay, you know, he's going to be able to do it. The little bit I've watched practice throws, you know, I've been very encouraged by where he's putting the ball in the way he's, you know, decisions he's making. I think it's good, you know, do I do. I think it's like, wow, you know, we have another Jayden Daniels. I don't know about that, but I certainly feel like just like Chicago should have hope. I think they have hope in Minnesota. It hasn't been, you know, all this doom and gloom or like, what's wrong with J.J. mcCarthy? It's more of like, we just want to see it. But I from what it feels like, I think they're in a good spot.
Devin
To kind of take a bird's eye view. Mark Dominic joining us here on the Dan Patrick show on Fox Sports Radio. If you look at that whole division, so you got Detroit now with two new coordinators. We just talked Vikings and Bears. Now Jordan Love's got a thumb deal with the packers. As you see it right now. Where do you stand with the four teams in placing as we're a couple of weeks away from the start of the regular season?
Noah
It's an amazing division. You know, it feels like Minnesota and Chicago are, you know, are battling for who's going to end up third or fourth. And it feels to me like Green Bay and Detroit, as good as Minnesota was last year, I just, it feels like Detroit, depending on, you know, the health of that defensive line and if it can come back, is the key to the difference. Right. And so I like the packers, though. I like Jeff Halfley. What he's done on defense. You talk about a coordinator has been able to stay there and now the guys understand what he's asking to do. You've got consistency. It's a quarterback spot. You've got all these young guys growing up together. I like where the packers are. I think they're a nod above Detroit, as good as Detroit is. And either one of those two teams can represent, represent the NFC in the super bowl, in my opinion. But I'm going to lean towards the packers because I just love the way that they've built this roster and how it's all growing up together at the same time. And it feels like a team that's going to be relevant for the next four or five years, for sure. And I believe in Jordan Love, and I think that he's got a chance to take his game to another level. And so with Luke Musgrave back now with Matthew Golden, I just think that the points are going to be very hard to overcome for the packers. Because they're going to score enough, opponents are going to have a hard time putting up the amount of points that I think the packers can.
Jake Hofer
Okay, Matt Stafford, what's your read on on the Rams quarterback?
Noah
I think they're just being very cautious, Right. They got to get him to Week one, so they're just going to, like, you know, say what we need to hear, you know, everything. But Matt Stafford, to me, will walk out the tunnel week one and play quarterback for the Rams. He won't play in the preseason. This is Stenson Bennett's opportunity to show that he's walking worthy of the fourth round pick and can be the number two. But Stafford, I think, will be fine. I don't think this is something that's going to continue to linger out. I think it's just one of those things that they're being overly cautious with them because they understand the whole season is relying on him.
Devin
What is their view of this year? Because this has been my thing with the Rams. Doug's heard me say it, Jason's heard me say it. I think they were close last year on the scoreboard in beating Philadelphia. I don't know how close they were, but now in the NFL, it seems like if you have a shot, do it. It's why I thought they brought Stafford back. How close are they? And for a team that less need has been a mover and Shaker, they got two number ones in 20, 26. Would there ever be a point where they would be like, all right, Stafford's not healthy.
Noah
Maybe.
Devin
Maybe we look in another way at the Rams kind of their big picture.
Noah
Yeah, I think. I think they've got to. They're trying to stay in that window with the most difficult position at all. Right. We see teams a lot of times like Josh Allen's going through it now. Right. The Bills have since spent a fortune of money trying to keep the crew together. And then what's going to happen is those guys are going to come out now. They're going to try to do it again. Patrick Mahomes is on the second wave of that right now. Right. In terms of like he's coming to league. They had a shot to go get Super Bowls and then they had to like readjust the roster and now they're doing that right now in Kansas City. And they're still relevant. They're. Rams are kind of, they've readjusted the roster except the quarterback is the aged one instead of a younger guy like Mahomes or Josh Allen or Lamar Jackson. And so I think the reason why they have two number ones is that they know that next year's draft they've got to do something and they know they have to do it at that position. And so they got the extra ammunition to be able to do that. I think they planned on that. This is Stafford's last season and that's why I think they're being safe with him. But I think the building blocks are there. This team does have a very young, explosive defense. It's very exciting, you know, getting the running back taken care of at a club friendly deal. Huge for them. So I think that you'll see them change that position out through the draft. I don't think they'll go for the veteran like take the picks and go get a veteran or something that's been somewhere else. I think they'll pick their own guy in the 2026 draft to be the next starter for the Rams.
Jake Hofer
James Cook signs a four year extension and this is a, it's a weird one. Right. Because he's only in, he's only in year four of a five year rookie contract. And I thought the is very telling that the agent's name were in the tweet and Chef's tweet. Right. So hey this, we went out there, we did this. It's, it says $30 million guaranteed when you have that fifth year option out there. Right. So he was going to get paid more money next year anyway. What do you think the details actually look like in terms of this extension for a guy who has back to back thousand yard seasons?
Noah
Yeah. So you know, James actually honors the rookie deal. It's a four year deal. That's what it is. The next year would be the franchise tag for him. You know, first rounders obviously get the fifth year option for them. So James was, you know, he's going into his last season and the, what's, what's in front of him is that franchise tag which is a significant Number to me, the Holden was pointless. If you're going to sign four years, 40 million, I think that was on the table the whole time. I don't think there's any way that wasn't on the table. I think the Bills just put their heels in and say, hey, look, take it or leave it. And I think what really happened behind the scenes was James Cooks was trying to get 16 to 18 a year and the Bills were laughing, going, we're not giving you that. We're just not going to happen. I mean, think of it this way. Zach Hiller, who's the agent for, you know, James Cook, was Dalvin Cook. So Dalvin Cook's agent. Right. When Dalvin Cook did his deal with the Minnesota Vikings five years ago, Dalvin Cook got more money than James Cook got today when the salary caps jumped 60, 70 million. So this is not a great deal. This is nothing to beat your chest on. You know, he's the agent's trying to say, hey, well, James always envisioned himself as a Buffalo Bill. That's why we had to do it. Neil Baloney. He took the deal that they put in front of you. You were scared to play it out, which I understand. I'm not going to be mad at James Cook. It's 48 million potential dollars. But the reality is he left 3 to 4 million dollars on the field if he goes to free agency next year, because I think somebody pays him 15, 16 million. But good, good for Buffalo Bills, good for James Cook. But it's not one where the agent should be beaten his chest saying, I did a good job because it's just, it's just kind of a meh deal at the running back spot where it's good money. Again, to the average American, it's like huge money, but to the running back market. But these last two extensions, you know, Kyron Williams obviously in the Rams, and now James Cook, they continue to push that markets going down. It's like 11, 12 million a year. That's kind of what the market is, I guess.
Jake Hofer
Yeah, no, that was more. My point Mark is that I think because of the success of Saquon Barkley and Josh Jacobs and, and guys that had come to contract impasses. Derrick Henry, there's this thought, oh, it's going to change the running back market. Then Saquon gets, you know, they tear up his deal and re up it. Like, no, it's pretty much the same. Their valuation is the same and if anything it's actually lower because as you point out, the salary cap has jumped substantially.
Noah
You just have to, Doug, you just have. As a running back, I know it's hard. As an agent, it's easy for us to sit here and talk about it. You have to get to free agency, have 31 other clubs bid on you or you're going to take the 11 to $12 million deal because that's what clubs are going to offer. So you've got to just decide what do you want to do? Do you want to get paid or do you want to to see what your value is? Two different things. Running backs, if they really want to get paid, they've got to get to free agency at a young age. Like they are. Like James Cooker Williams would be, would have been no again, no. They got to secure their bag. They want to get their money. I get it. No big deal. But we're not going to see a market change until somebody pushes the envelope and says I'm going to free agency.
Jake Hofer
That's Mark Dominick, former general manager at Tempe Buccaneers. You can hear him weekly in the Doug Gottlieb Show. Mark, you're the best man. Appreciate you getting up for us.

Good morning to you, Dan Patrick show, Fox Sports Radio. Did did you guys know what yesterday was on Comedy Central? Anybody? It was South Park Day. Yeah, it was South Park Day. Apparently south park and it was pre planned, they say took the week off even though it should have been the second week of. Of their 13th season. Right. And that's after record ratings because of, you know, the week one was took shots at the president at a bunch of political, political stories or whatever. And it was hysterical. And so of course you like, don't you want to follow up on this momentum? And apparently they just instead ran South Park Day all the south park, that's where we are in 2000, in 2010 or 20 in 2025. That's where we are as a country, as a people. Right. Where political Commentary or political comedy is on South Park. That's where we do realize, like, we need to take a snapshot. How did we get to this place? Simpsons projects the future. South park is the. A snapshot of the now in terms of political commentary. That's kind of a fascinating thing, isn't it? All right, so we do that. So now something we do on the Doug Gottlieb show on a weekly basis on Thursdays is we look back. Don't call it a throwback. Throwback Thursday. This is Dan Byers mind, Jason Stewart's creation. J. Stu, take it away.
Doug Gottlieb
I want all of.
Jake Hofer
No, no, you're supposed to do the J. Stu thing.
Doug Gottlieb
Go ahead, throw it to me.
Jake Hofer
Jason Stewart. Thank you, Doug.
Doug Gottlieb
I'll take it from here. I want everybody listening to this right now to go back to 2010. All the members of this show working on the show right now, and I want all the listeners to go back to 2010. We're going to. Don't call it a throwback Thursday.
Jake Hofer
Byer, where were you 2010?
Doug Gottlieb
In 2010, Here Hard Knocks aired the famous jets season. I think that was peak Hard Knocks. I think we haven't seen anything since. It's certainly awful this season.
Jake Hofer
Let's go get a GD snack, right? Wasn't that.
Doug Gottlieb
Was that exactly what it is? Let's get a bleeping snack. Was the main takeaway. And then Antonio Cromartie struggling to name.
Jake Hofer
All of his kids names. That's eight kids.
Doug Gottlieb
Was maybe the most humorous takeaway of the whole thing. But Hard Knocks, peak hard knocks, 2010. Dan Byer, what do you remember most about that sports year?
Noah
2010.
Devin
2010. Doug, I'm sorry to steal your territory, but whenever I think of 2010, I think of the 2010 final thing. 4 and what could have been with Duke and Butler and Gordon Hayward's half wood, half court shot that did not fall. But when I think of 2010, I think of how Cinderella almost shocked the world in college basketball.
Jake Hofer
Yeah. And it's amazing, the narrative of that final four. Right. It's the Cinderella who is actually a preseason, like top 10 team and they're right down the street from. I'm not, you know, 20 minutes away from their campus. But and, and, and we talk about that shot not going in more than we talk about, you know, what, what Duke did, by the way, dude intentionally missed the second free throw. That would have made it a three point game. It was a mistake by Mike Krzyzewski. Like it was a huge mistake. Which he's sort of owned afterwards. Well, I do it again. Okay. Cause remember Brian Zubeck was at the free throw line and he makes the first, they're up two points, he intentionally misses the second. And the narrative was, well, it missed a second because you know, Brad Stevens got all these plays like yeah. But all of a sudden now you put losing on the table. That shot goes in, you lose as opposed. If you make the free throw and the shot goes in, it goes to overtime.
Devin
What are the odds Gordon Ayward's going to make a half court shot? Right, that's one of the odds.
Jake Hofer
Oh, so there's a, there's a lot to it. But yes, that was, that was probably peak Cinderella. It was Butler.
Devin
It's crazy because I think of that before. I think of Celtics, Lakers seven game series and kind of what a clunker game seven was. But when we talk about basketball in that world, I think more of the final four than the NBA Finals.
Doug Gottlieb
Well, of course the, the NBA Finals as the Lakers just beat the Celtics was overshadowed by something called the decision. July 8, 2010. LeBron James sits down with what's his face and announces that he's going to take his talents to Miami, piss off all of Cleveland and most of the sports world.
Jake Hofer
Okay, so do you know where we've, we've, we have talked about this, but the audience doesn't know that. I was guest hosting for Jim Rome on Rome is Burning when the announcement came down. And here's what's interesting about it. Two days before, I was on ESPN's campus and I was walking with Scott Van Pelt and Chris Carter is walking the other way. We're like on a sidewalk, right? We're walking from the cafeteria, I think it was called Building 4. And we're like, what up, CC? He's like, hey, the King's going to Miami. And at the time, no one had mentioned Miami had not been discussed. Right. There was lots of discussion about what he was going to do. Miami was not one of the teams listed as a possible destination. And, and, and by the way, Dwyane Wade, whatever he was, was it up and smoke the podcast he was on where he was talking about he was planning on going to Chicago anyway, he was getting out of Miami too. But Chris Carter was, was tied in the, the former, former colleague here at Fox. So that was an amazing one.
Doug Gottlieb
So this is when Dan Beyer does something very impressive on our show each week. I'm telling you right now, believe me, for the listeners, there's no script in front of him. There's no Google, there's no phone. He's about to tell you what happened.
Jake Hofer
In golf in 2010.
Devin
I was at three of the four. Four majors that year, seeing Phil Mickelson win his third green jacket. Then Graham McDowell went to Pebble beach and won the US Open. Missed out on Louis and winning the Open Championship at St. Andrews. But then it was Martin Kimer over Bubba Watson at Whistling Straits to win the PGA Championship Was also a Rider cup year where Team Europe on a Monday finish beat Team USA at Celtic Manor and Wales.
Jake Hofer
Avatar was the big movie. Avatar. The Metro Dome collapsed. Ah.
Devin
Wow.
Jake Hofer
Yeah, that was. Remember, remember Brett? Brett Favre? It was like all in epic kind of fashion, right? Brett Favre. They brought him out of retirement.
Doug Gottlieb
He almost got killed. Yeah.
Jake Hofer
Yeah. He looked like he had worn the same hat he was mowing the lawn with when Chili went down there and brought him back. That was all 2010, by the way. That was the beginning of baseball kind.
Devin
Of being good five impression, too, with Chili.
Jake Hofer
Good chile chili. Those are the days. Those are the days. All right, coming up next, Dan Byer. Doug Gottlieb in for Dan the Danettes. Is Shador Sanders a victim? We'll discuss next the Dan Patrick Show.

The Dan Patrick Show: Hour 1 – Burgers, Brewers, and Taylor Swift with Mark Dominik
Release Date: August 14, 2025
In this engaging episode of The Dan Patrick Show, hosted by Dan Patrick alongside co-hosts Jake Hofer, Devin, and Noah, a variety of topics spanning sports, pop culture, and local Milwaukee happenings are thoroughly explored. The episode features insightful discussions, expert analysis from former NFL General Manager Mark Dominik, and a deep dive into the intersection of sports and entertainment.
The show kicks off with an enthusiastic discussion about the Milwaukee Brewers’ impressive performance. The Brewers have secured a 12-game winning streak, prompting local restaurant George Webb to offer free hamburgers to celebrate each victory. This tradition, rooted in Milwaukee’s baseball history, dates back to the 1987 season when a similar streak captivated the city.
Jake Hofer highlights the rarity and excitement of the event:
“Free hamburger on the 12th straight win has been the talk of the town.” [04:58]
Devin adds context by reminiscing about past instances:
“In 1987, the brewers opened the season with 13 straight wins. It’s one of the most storied pieces of Milwaukee Brewer history.” [08:01]
The hosts discuss the economic and social impact of such promotions, debating whether patrons opt for just the burger or take advantage of additional freebies like fries and drinks, reflecting on similar promos from other national chains.
Transitioning from sports to pop culture, the conversation shifts to Taylor Swift’s recent appearance on the Kelsey Podcast, where she discusses her foray into football and her latest album. The hosts dissect the dynamics of the interview, particularly focusing on Travis (presumably a sports figure) and his role alongside Swift.
Doug Gottlieb shares his initial skepticism, later acknowledging his changed perspective:
“These are like two teenagers in love, and who doesn't like seeing that?” [15:15]
Jake Hofer speculates on the authenticity of the interaction:
“I honestly think that's the... it's fun to do something that you've never done before with somebody who's your boyfriend.” [16:34]
The segment underscores the blend of sports and celebrity culture, pondering whether such appearances are strategic moves or genuine expressions of interest.
Former Tampa Buccaneers General Manager Mark Dominik joins the show to provide expert analysis on current NFL scenarios, focusing on the Cleveland Browns and other league developments.
The discussion delves into the performance of Shador Sanders during the Browns' opening exhibition game. Dominik expresses optimism about Sanders’ potential as a starter, despite ongoing injuries within the quarterback lineup.
Mark Dominik states:
“I took it away as game. I think he'll be a starter for the Cleveland Browns. It won't be week one, but I do think he'll start this year for Cleveland.” [28:24]
Caleb Williams’ integration into the Chicago Bears’ system is another focal point. Dominik evaluates Williams’ rookie performance and anticipates his development within the team’s offensive strategy.
Mark Dominik remarks:
“If Caleb Williams comes out and starts consistent, because again, he played good comparatively to Trevor Lawrence is for sure.” [30:17]
The conversation shifts to Matt Stafford’s role with the Los Angeles Rams, addressing concerns about his health and the team's future quarterback plans.
Mark Dominik comments:
“Matt Stafford, to me, will walk out the tunnel week one and play quarterback for the Rams. He won't play in the preseason.” [35:32]
The segment concludes with an analysis of James Cook’s four-year extension with the Buffalo Bills. Dominik critiques the deal, highlighting its modest financial terms relative to Cook’s performance.
Mark Dominik critiques:
“This is not a great deal. This is nothing to beat your chest on.” [40:33]
He elaborates on the broader NFL running back market trends, suggesting that significant changes await as players like Saquon Barkley and Josh Jacobs renegotiate their contracts.
In a nostalgic segment, the hosts reminisce about pivotal sports moments from 2010. Key highlights include the Cinderella run of Butler in the NCAA Final Four, LeBron James’ controversial decision to join Miami, and memorable moments from the NFL and NBA.
Doug Gottlieb nostalgically recalls:
“In 2010, Here Hard Knocks aired the famous Jets season. I think that was peak Hard Knocks.” [49:17]
Jake Hofer adds excitement about iconic basketball moments:
“Whenever I think of 2010, I think of how Cinderella almost shocked the world in college basketball.” [49:19]
The segment provides a lively retrospective, celebrating unforgettable sports achievements and their lasting impact on fans.
As the episode wraps up, Dan Patrick teases the next show's focus on Shador Sanders and broader NFL discussions. The hosts invite listeners to tune in daily for more in-depth analysis and entertaining conversations.
Dan Patrick concludes:
“We have a fascinating social experiment because people want to make it about all these things that it's not about.” [27:18]
