Hope you had a great weekend everybody. Back in the home man cave gave Minister of Humor. Fritzi is here. Dylan is here. Marv Polyure is truly in the back room guys as well. Time to overreact. Following the draft, the fallout Chris Sims from Football Night in America will stop by. We'll go, I guess, in the wayback machine and look back on just some of the picks, teams, things that stood out, good and bad. NBA Cavs, Raptors tied at two a piece. Spurs up three one on the Blazers. Wemby came back and made a big difference. Celtics up 3:1 on the 76ers. The Lakers up 3:1 on the Rockets tonight. Pistons, Magic, who, Detroit. All that goodwill in the regular season and you're putting it on the line. Thunder should put away the Suns. Timberwolves banged up, facing the Nuggets. 8773 DP show as we always do every Monday, best and worst of the weekend. What you saw that you liked, you didn't like. Stat of the day, always brought to you by Panini America, the official trading cards of the program and the first hour brought to you by the folks who have been bringing you the right tires for how and what and where you drive for over 40 years. Tirerack.com ship fast and free, backed by free road hazard protection. Convenient installation options like mobile tire installation. Tirerack.com the way tire buying should be. Good morning. If you're watching on Peacock, our streaming partner or the NBC Sports Network or our radio affiliates around the country, 877-3DP show operator Tyler sitting by. He'll take your phone calls. There's a lot of things that happen over the weekend, by the way. Pittsburgh, take a bow. You did a wonderful job. I think there's over 300,000 people who live in proper Pittsburgh proper or in the surrounding area. They had over 700,000 for the draft all three days now. The weather certainly helped out, but that's a football crazy town. The weather was great, the atmosphere was Wonderful. And Washington, D.C. you're now on the clock for next year's draft. We focus on quarterbacks and it's the most important position in all the sports. And then you start to think about it's one thing to be a starter in the NFL, but it's another thing to be a backup quarterback. And we've talked about this before, there are certain backup quarterbacks that you say not worth it. You know, I go back to Colin Kaepernick, if he was going to be a backup quarterback, wasn't worth it. Tim Tebow, not worth it as a backup quarterback. Too much coverage for my backup quarterback. Even Cam Newton, if he was going to come back and he was going to be a backup quarterback. Johnny Manziel, you gotta have a backup quarterback who you probably don't see very much. And that's a Good thing if you're one of the McCown brothers and you're just there for 15 years. Chase Daniel, you know, nice college career. You just want to make sure that guy is just there in case. Colt McCoy. Diego Pavia was a Heisman Trophy finalist. He did not get drafted. Now, there's a few reasons why he was very, very good in the sec. That should stand out and that should make, that should make you draft eligible. You should get drafted just based off what you did. You did it for Vandy in the sec. You know, you can have personality at other positions. It can be absorbed, it can be embraced. But not a backup quarterback, because quarterback is evaluated differently. You can be an elite talent, get away with that. Wide receiver. You can be an elite talent and
Show Announcer
get away with that.
Dan Patrick
Or a great defensive, you know, alignment, edge rusher. The message from the NFL is really clear. If you're not a can't miss prospect, professionalism is not just valued, it's required. And that hurt Diego Pavia also that he's not a tall guy. Most of your backup quarterbacks, if you check, are not short quarterbacks. Diego Pavia might be 5, 10, but you start to look at what you did in your pre draft meetings with team. Sure, Sanders fell to the fifth round. It wasn't anything that he was doing on the football field. It was just personality. Fifth round, Pavia goes undrafted. He didn't have an agent, but you have Tebow, Cam Newton, Kaepernick. Other examples of your backup quarterback being too much of a headline or potential for a headline. Pavia is being invited a tryout with the Ravens. He wasn't signed as an undrafted free agent. He gets to try out now. He's also friends with Johnny Manziel. That doesn't help. And you start to belittle Indiana football. Fernando Mendoza, Heisman Night Football moves on quickly. Yeah, you can be. Just ask Johnny Manzel. It moves quickly. It's like, oh, yeah, what are you doing now? Nothing. Okay. Check back in five years from now. Probably not doing nothing again. But Diego Pavia has a personality, but he does not have a personality that I want as my backup quarterback. I don't think he's good enough to be a starter in the NFL. You know, he's not Doug Flutie like Doug Flutie was 5, 9, Heisman Trophy trophy winner. But he was the ideal personality to be a backup quarterback and ready to come in when need be. In fact, Flutie was ahead of his time. Fluty. Now Fluty would be able to play and play at a Pretty high level. But Diego Pavia, the personality, that's who you are. You're selling that personality, but I'm not buying that. Teams are not buying that. Teams didn't buy Shador Sanders. He came in, he didn't interview well. He. He seemed entitled. And teams were like, you're not a can't miss prospect. If you are, we can, we can absorb that, we can try to smooth that over or we can sell that as, hey, come out and see this guy. He's a lot of fun. Like Manziel in college was wonderful. And then I realized just how great Mike Evans was. And that's where you go. He certainly helped out Johnny Manziel. Be Johnny Manziel. But that personality, then your commitment is questioned. You want to party. You want to be a star. I have no interest in that. It's a tough enough POS position to play. It's tough enough as a coach to try to survive, to try to win. You're going to bring him into Baltimore. You do have Lamar Jackson and you have a new head coach in Todd Monken. I don't want that. You know, maybe if it's Andy Reid with Patrick Mahomes, maybe, but you got to be really good. Are you going to be able to break down defenses? Are you going to put in the extra time to make the starter look better? Well, these guys have been catered to, pampered all their life because they've been the star. Now you're going to be a backup. I don't get to play. That's the life of a backup quarterback. You don't, you don't want to see me. You don't want to hear from me. You just want me to help the starting quarterback. And that was the brutal reality that Diego Pavia was handed over the weekend. He did not get drafted.
Paulie
Yeah, Paul, he's one of those guys who probably should have stayed in college another year if he could have scammed some eligibility. He had two years in New Mexico State, two years at Vandy. If he could have somehow bought another year, no pun, he could have got paid on Al money. He'd be attractive.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, but still, if. If this is who he is, I mean, you gotta be really, really good if I'm gonna take this on. And Kaepernick was a great starter, but I don't want what comes with that. Cam Newton, great. I don't want him as a backup. Tim Tebow. You want your daughter to marry him. I don't want him as my backup quarterback because now I get all that attention, and I don't want that kind of attention. Yes, Dylan.
Dylan
It is surprising, though, that a team didn't take a flyer on him in the later rounds. When you see some of the other quarterbacks who got taken late, like Nussmeier obviously went at the very end. He's got health concerns. And if you look at the tape last year, I mean, hard to argue with that season.
Dan Patrick
No, I know he's really talented, but you got to be great. How much baggage do you have that, you know, whenever I see somebody falling and all you want to do, it's like, wide receivers, like Antonio Brown was unbelievable for five years. Then all of a sudden, Antonio Brown's baggage didn't fit in the overhead bin. Now we have an issue here. A lot of these wide receivers, they be like, all, okay, he's a personality, your quarterback. That's the face of your franchise. But maybe he gets an opportunity somewhere. Kind of feels like he's going to be a Arena League or UFL or whatever it's called now. Maybe gets an opportunity there. Maybe cfl. Yeah, Paul.
Paulie
Yeah, the UFL is going on currently. If they could snag him, they get some people tuning in.
Dan Patrick
Me? Yeah. Yeah, I guess. Actually, I tuned in this weekend accidentally. I think Columbus was playing.
Paulie
You're Columbus Aviators?
Dan Patrick
Yeah. I'm going, what am I doing? I mean, I'm not jonesing for football after the weekend with the draft. Like, I'm okay, I'm okay. And you know what was interesting? If you have kids Christmas morning and they just start opening up gifts, and you're like, wait, wait, wait, hold on, hold on, hold on. Let. Let's have some order here. That was round one of the NFL draft. It was. Your kids are just opening up gifts. You're like, wait, wait, hold on. And the pick is in. And here's the commissioner and the Brown select. And then all of a sudden, it's like, and the pick is in. It was quick. Might have been a little too quick for me. And that sounds hypocritical because I probably was like, man, it takes forever in the first round. Roger Goodell's first year as commissioner, first round was six hours. I think we were just under three hours this first round. It moved quick. I like it. Everything nowadays with sports, it's. It's gotta move, gotta move, gotta move. You're competing with somebody's phone. It just felt like it was a little too fast that everybody was opening up their Christmas gifts and you weren't able to follow what was going on, like. All right. Okay, wait, hold on, hold on. It's your sister's turn. But the hugs were really powerful and passionate. Do you think Roger Goodell's wife says, why don't you hug me like that?
Paulie
She'd get hurt. He goes in for the big guy.
Dan Patrick
Oh, I know. Yes, Marvin.
Stugatz
But was it Roger Goodell's wife's dream to hug him? These kids that get drafted, their dream is to get their name called in the hug. Roger Goodell. I'm not sure if that's his wife's dream. Okay, so their dreams being realized by hugging this man.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. All right. I'm just saying, you know? Yes. Paul.
Paulie
Did you guys find the first round on TV almost too fast where you didn't get enough breakdown of the last draft pick?
Dan Patrick
Yeah, a touch. Yeah. It was just a little bit, but I'd rather it be faster than slower. And I know Mike Greenberg, who hosted for the Mothership, said, you know, maybe we should let the host call a timeout. And there's other draft picks that you want to talk a little bit more about. Well, the problem with that is ESPN's not the only game in town. There's other networks, other shows that are carrying the draft. So if Greenie goes, hey, I'd like to call a timeout. I want to explore a little bit more about why this happened. Well, then all the other shows got to go. Wait, what? Greeny called a timeout? Can't do that. Yes, Todd, that seems more like that
Todd
a team website should offer. Like, if you want more extended information about picks in the later rounds, go to our website, and there's an analyst there live chatting about it. Nothing more than that.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, I think that there should be something adjacent to the draft picks if you want to explore a little bit more with your team, and maybe you have somebody who will be there to give you maybe a little bit more of a synopsis on. On. Your player still feels like Sean McVeigh is answering questions about Ty Simpson, and he's tired of answering questions about Ty Simpson. But, Sean, you can't convince me that you were grumpy about something else that was going on in your life. If it is, tell me what it was because you want to win. Now, you can't be excited because Ty Simpson's coming in, and you, of course, have Matthew Stafford. I can't be excited. We got this quarterback because I got a quarterback who's a Hall of Famer, and you might have been the best team in football last year. And if you're Going to convince me, Ty Simpson, that's a good pick.
Chris Sims
I.
Dan Patrick
He might be the right guy, but at the wrong time, he's not going to help you this year. And if he does, that means Matthew Stafford's hurt. But if you are going to tell me that Kenyon Siddiq or Makai Lemon couldn't have helped you more if you're Sean McVeigh, maybe there's a defender there. But if I can add a tight end who runs a 4, 3, 40. Or I got Lemon, who's a USC kid who was a tough runner after the catch, that, to me felt like that would have made Sha McVey a little happier. But he kept saying, no, no, no, no, no. You know, we're lock step, me and Les Sneed the gm. I go, okay, I'm not buying it. Because I would have been like, you got to be kidding me. And we're going to take. We're going to use the 13th pick. Can't we trade down? Can't we get. If we trade down, it sounds better. Like, if we got him at the 26th pick, and then you go, okay. Which is what I thought they were going to do. I thought that they would go at the very end of the first round and they would try to get Ty Simpson. But I would not be happy if I'm Sean McVeigh now, I would have been probably better at showing that I'm a team guy. But the fact that he was noticeably upset, angry, I liked it because I. It was an honest moment there. Yeah. So that. That seemed to just hang over the draft, and it still is going to. And even in the off season. And then I hear the Rams aren't out on Jimmy Garoppolo yet. Like, I think they're trying to get Jimmy Grop Low to still want to be with the team as a backup. So it was fun. But once again, Pittsburgh, you did a wonderful job. The audiences that came out all three days spirited into it, and I would think, per capita, I don't think anybody, maybe Green Bay buys more gear than those fans in Pittsburgh. Wow. All right, so we'll talk to Chris Sims. Uh, you can see him every morning Pro Football Talk Live. Also, his unbuttoned podcast as well. So he'll join us. Coming up, your phone calls, best and worst of the weekend. We're back after this Dan Patrick Show.

Detroit had 775,000 over three days. Green Bay had 600,000. Pittsburgh the final tabulation 805,000 fans. It's in Washington D.C. coming up next year, let's bring in Chris Sims, Pro Football Talk Live co host. You can also listen to his podcast Unbuttoned Former NFL and Texas quarterback. Why wasn't Diego Pavia drafted?
Chris Sims
Well, there's a lot of reasons to that one, you know, smaller quarterback. I think the league is a little down on smaller quarterbacks right now to when he had to play within the pocket. It's underwhelming to watch him in those, those scenarios. He's not a high level thrower of the football. You know, he plays a style and is most successful when it's backyard type football. But yet he's not very fast either. And then he plays small. And then also on top of that, Dan, nobody wants to bring in their practice squad. Third string quarterback who likes to make headlines for the wrong reasons at times. And I think all those situations or why, you know, he wasn't drafted. Yes. Or this weekend.
Dan Patrick
I know I spent a lot of time Thursday and Friday on this story and that's Ty Simpson going to the Rams. Yeah. And I'm trying to understand the strategy of taking a guy for a team that might be the best team in football. With apologies to Seattle, but you're taking a guy who best case scenario doesn't help you this year and maybe not next year. So why take him that high? Given that I had a couple of offensive weapons. Sadiq was there, Lemon there. Devonte Adams is 34.
Chris Sims
Exactly.
Dan Patrick
So help me understand the, the philosophy there.
Chris Sims
Well, I don't think I'm gonna. Because I can't understand it either. I mean, I certainly wouldn't have done it. That was not what I was for. I mean, again, I listen. You can still hear.
Dan Patrick
You hear it.
Chris Sims
Those are the seahawks and the 49ers. They're still cheering that they did. The Rams took Ty Simpson. I mean, yes. I mean, because you said it, they're the second best team in football last year by all due accounts. If they go to the super bowl, they're going to beat the Patriots. They were a better football team, you know, so yeah, you looked at that pick 13 and I know the whole league in the NFC west especially was like, oh my gosh, the rams got pick 13. I think there was some thoughts there that they were like, oh gosh, I'm scared they're going to trade into the top 10 and really get some splash type player to add to their, their awesome football team on top of that. So yeah, I listen, I know it was a, an extra pick they had from the Atlanta Falcons trade and they probably feel like they're playing with house money. But man, you're in a Super bowl window right now. Matthew Stafford's playing phenomenal football. Like you said, Ty Simpson's a guy again, smaller. I don't think he was as any anybody viewed him as a top 20 pick in the NFL draft. And the league's a little down on those type of guys like I'm telling you about. And he hasn't played a lot of football to where now he's going to sit on the bench and not play football for a little bit while longer. That's, to me, the part that doesn't quite make sense. And I'll throw this out there too, Dan. I mean, for a guy like Matthew Stafford, this is only going to motivate him to play one more year extra. Oh, you think you're going to tell me when I'm going to retire and oh, damn, you didn't want to waste a. A pick like you said. Makai Lemon. I mean, Devonte Adams is not what he used to be and he's 34 and he gets injured. So, yeah, that was not my favorite pick and certainly is still a head scratcher to me. And, and by all due accounts, Sean McVeigh's reaction on Thursday night as well.
Dan Patrick
I'm trying to understand the Cardinals philosophy with Jeremiah. Love that. I get it. You got to have a face for the franchise. McBride is great. We're still waiting for Harrison to be something. You don't have a quarterback. He, he's too talented to pass up. I just don't know if that's the right team for him at the right time. And then you go out and you get Carson back later, who is probably going to see the field. Aside from Mendoza, Carson Beck is probably the next quarterback who's going to be playing this season.
Chris Sims
It wouldn't, it wouldn't shock me. Jacoby Brissette, you know, I expect him to be there, be the quarterback. I think Arizona went like the route of like, we're not going to make this all about the quarterback. Just because we need one doesn't mean we're just going to pick one and one that we don't necessarily like high in the draft like a Ty Simpson. I never got the sense they would do that again. They were a team that was kind of burned by the smaller type quarterback. I worked in New England with Monte Austin for it. I mean, the philosophical thought at the quarterback position in New England, and I believe Monty believes in that, is that bigger quarterbacks, that's traditionally what they had. I think that's what he believes in now, where it's good, Dan, is this, this is Mike LaFleur. He's a run game expert and he, he knows how to use the running back. Being from Shanahan being from McVeigh, his brother up in Green Bay, trading for Josh Jacobs, adding him to the offense, they're going to know how to use him, not only in the run game and the pass game, and then they got a decent O line. They got something forming here. So I think what they're kind of doing is just building the team and then hopefully next year they can strike while the iron's hot and finally get their quarterback of the future. But for now, that wasn't there and they went with the best offensive player on the board and a guy that has a chance to be Marshall Falk if they can support him the right way with the team around him.
Dan Patrick
Chris Sims, Pro Football Talk Live co host and his podcast entitled Unbuttoned. It's rare when we say this, but the jets seemed to have a good draft, but who had a better draft, the Giants or the Jets?
Chris Sims
Oh, I mean, they both, to me, were. Are at the top. Okay, they're at the top. Like, if you gave me stars, and I'm going to do this on my podcast a little bit later, I'm going to tell you the New York Giants and the New York jets were two of the best drafts there is. Now, let me just say this right off the bat, because the jets was phenomenal. Three first round picks. I like them all. I really. And they're going to help their football team and it stays consistent with what the jets have done all offseason, which was signing veteran players that can make them good right now. Because if they're not good right now, their butts are hot on the hot seat there. They got to make it work. And I think the guys they drafted can help them out right away. Now, the Giants, of course, I love that draft. And this is where people are missing out on this Arvell Reese conversation. Okay, so Arvell Reese, yes, he has a chance to be Micah Parsons. But as we know, Micah Parsons played a lot of middle linebackers first year with the Dallas Cowboys. I know everybody's looking at it right now going, wait, they have pass rushers. I get it. Okay, well, here's the first thing. The best. Everybody talks about Sonny Styles. And I tried to emphasize this on my Chris Sims on button podcast. The best middle linebacker in the draft was Arval Reese. All right, so as freaky as everybody told you about Sonny Styles, he was the second best linebacker on his football team. Arvel Reese is the best middle linebacker to come out in football in quite some time. So you have that right off the bat. And that's where I think some Giant fans are missing. So he's there, he's starting. He's going to be phenomenal there, and then they can slowly work him in. Kayvon Thibodeau has one year left playing there, so he'll be the third rotational guy. It'll be Abdul Carter, it'll be Brian Burns, Arvell Reese in the middle, Kayvon Thibodeau subbing in for the guys on the edge. Next year, Arval Reese will play a little bit more edge, and they'll continue to infuse that to where two or three years from now, it'll be Arvo Reese and Abdul Carter on the Edge, and we'll see where Brian Burns is. As you know, two or three years for a guy like that, it's a long time. So I love the Giants draft, but I love the jets, too, and I'd probably give the Giants the edge, honestly.
Dan Patrick
Dan. Yeah, I think the jets did a great job in drafting for next year that they didn't reach for anybody.
Chris Sims
Exactly.
Dan Patrick
They're like, right, we'll figure out the quarterbacking situation. Let's just make the team better. And I go back to Bill Cowers, quote, when he was with me last week in Pittsburgh, he said, when we were getting ready to draft Ben Roethlisberger, we had already made ourselves a really good team. So the quarterback came into a good team. Instead of, let's build around the quarterback and have him try to make like Fernando Mendoza. Yeah. I mean, hopefully they're building the team. It's a good enough team that he comes in instead of saying, hey, you're the number one pick. Go out there and be a savior.
Chris Sims
Yeah. And that's the way it should be. And see, that's the way I was trying to kind of explain to Arizona. And you said it a better way there. I don't think they weren't going to. The jets weren't going to be, oh, we're going to reach and take a quarterback we don't like just because everybody says we need a quarterback. No, they're going, wait, we got Gino. He Geno's damn good if you can help him out a little bit. Same with the Cardinals and Jacoby Brissette. Let's build the team. And then if Arch Manning's there next year, boom, he's ours. And he could come in and be really good right away because we got the support around him. And, you know, we've had too many times in history where you, you just said it like, we get the quarterback and you go, okay, but the rest of the team stinks. What the. It doesn't matter if it's Superman or whoever, John Elway, they're not going to be very good with this team. And I think we've seen this. Detroit. Detroit took the. Let's build the team and we'll grow. Jared Goff. Behind that, the Seattle Seahawks. What did they do?
Dan Patrick
They.
Chris Sims
It wasn't like, oh, Sam, save us, Sammy. It was like, our team's good. Let's bring in Sam. He'll help us out. All right. The Philadelphia Eagles, they never made it. Like, oh, it's Jalen hurts. And then we're going to figure it out. They were like, damn, our team's good. And now we got Jalen hurts, and he'll fit into it. So I think that's the right approach. And I think too many organizations do quarterback before the team. And you're seeing one here where it's team first, like you're pointing out, and
Dan Patrick
I keep mentioning this, probably ad nauseam, that is, these are the kind of drafts that you look back in two or three years and you say, how did that team get so good? It's because you're drafting players that aren't making headlines. They're not, you know. Sexy names.
Chris Sims
Exactly.
Dan Patrick
You know, you're just like. All of a sudden, you know, it's a pukinakua in the fifth round and you're like, man, was he a first round pick? Like, these are the things that I try to tell people. You can win later with drafts like this. Totally, totally. You know that. That's what I think the value of this is. Like. Like, the Chiefs quietly went out and I think had a good draft. They got defensive play. Like, they revamped their defense in one draft. Now you can say, did they go up maybe too high to get the defensive back Monster Delaney? Yeah, right. Yeah. But, you know, if I'm Steve Spagnolo, I'm like, man, thank you. Christmas. Yeah, Christmas in April here that we got. So those are the little things that happen with some of these teams where you go quietly, they tapped you on the shoulder and they go, keep an eye on us this year, next year.
Chris Sims
That's right. You build, you know, I mean, you build teams.
Dan Patrick
Really.
Chris Sims
Again, the success rate of the second and third round picks is greater than the success rate of the first round picks. And with your Chiefs thing, that was a calculated chance. And Dan, I'll sit here and tell you they were. I don't. You got. Somebody's got to prove me Wrong. I don't think they were trading up for Monsoon Delaine. They didn't think the Giants were going to take Arvl Reese, so they were going, oh my gosh, we're going to get Arvell Reese at number six. The Giants aren't going to do that. They have enough pass rushers.
Dan Patrick
Right.
Chris Sims
But yet they knew if the Giants took him, wait, there's another guy we really love there that we need. So that's that smart team building and they made a move that a calculated chance and risk there. Right. So. But yeah, the success rate of the second and third round picks is greater than the first round picks. We've seen the Rams with F them picks, but yet still build their team with great 3rd and 4th and 5th round picks. To your point there and the other thing we're seeing, and you kind of hit on this just a little, the first round has become less about, oh, this guy is awesome at this one thing. But he got some other questions. We're not sure. We're seeing guys like, I will say, like guys like Makai Lemon and Omar Cooper, I think 10 years ago. They're not first round picks. They're not, they're not really explosive or sexy that way, but they're good. They make you feel warm and cozy because they came from a good school with a good emblem and they played in some big games and you just go, wait, the floor's high. The ceiling might not that be high, but there's not a bust factor. And GMs have realized like, if I draft bust, I get fired. If I draft guys that nobody can call or bust, I might be able to stick around a little longer. And I think the NFL's taking that approach in the first round more here now.
Dan Patrick
What's next on the football schedule here?
Chris Sims
Well, for me personally, I mean, I'm just happy I don't have to watch film and make lists and do, you know, rank this position and watch the 27th ranked defense, a tackle in the draft. But now I just get to sit back, enjoy the news and kind of just react. So it's just OTAs and minicamps from here now.
Dan Patrick
Dan and Aaron Rodgers.
Chris Sims
What's that?
Dan Patrick
And Aaron Rodgers.
Chris Sims
Well, and Aaron Rodgers. That, that's the story that never dies. It just, it's, it's been going on for eight years now. It never dies. I've hit my life litmus limit with talking with Aaron Rodgers.
Dan Patrick
All right. Thank you, Chris.
Chris Sims
All right, man. Good seeing you, Dan. Tell those jerks I said hi.
Dan Patrick
All right. Hey, jerks. Chris says hi. Chris Simms, Pro Football Talk Live co host and his podcast unbuttoned and we're still waiting for the Aaron Rodgers announcement. Mike Tomlin was introduced on the NBC basketball coverage and Maria Taylor asked him about Aaron Rodgers and he said, gun to my head, I think he's coming back. Which I think he's coming back. Now, they did draft Drew Aller from Penn State, who last year was probably looked at as a first round draft pick and does show signs of being a quality quarterback. The potential for being that. Yes, Dylan, I feel like we would
Dylan
absolutely know that he was not coming back at this juncture. The fact that it's still like up in the air means like, yeah, he's, of course he's going to be there.
Dan Patrick
I don't, I don't lose any sleep over it.
Dylan
Me neither.
Dan Patrick
I mean, I'm, I'm required, it feels like, to ask when we have analysts on, but it feels like everybody says the same thing. Yeah, yeah, I think he's coming back, like, okay, and then he'll come back and then we'll go, okay. And then he'll throw 25 touchdowns and 10 interceptions and Pittsburgh goes nine and eight and we'll go, okay, we'll wait till next year. Yes.
Paulie
Paul, I was in a bar when Drew Aller got drafted by the Steelers. The Steelers fans were all charged up and yelling. And then round seven, they get the kid from Navy that you love, Eli Heidenreich. Yeah, the hometown kid.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, he's a talented player. He'll make the roster. And you know, we were looking at his combine number. His, his numbers are very, very similar to Christian McCaffrey. Now, I'm not saying he is Christian McCaffrey, but he was used that way in college. But that was, that was a big deal. You know, they, they treated him like he, they treated him better than first round draft pick. It's like they paraded him around and put him on a podium. All right. Yeah.
Paulie
Paul, it does seem like army and Navy are loosening things up the past decade with their guys going pro.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, well, he still has his military commitment, no matter when you take it, I guess, but I don't know if, you know, it's one of those things where that'll be an issue. I remember Chad Hennings, he was Air
Paulie
Force, Air Force D lineman, Cowboys.
Dan Patrick
And I remember they drafted him and then they said, yeah, but he's got a, he's got a six year military commitment. But then they navigated that like David Robinson. I don't know. What was his military commitment after he graduated? Maybe he was just ambassador. Maybe. Hey, we want you to be an ambassador for the Naval Academy. Yes.
Dylan
Dylan, if your age wasn't a factor, would you rather do your military service first and then it's like, all right, that's done. I'm gonna play football now. Or have your NFL career come back, do military service?
Dan Patrick
I'd rather try the football out the gates. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Because I think. I mean, Roger Staubach came back after his military commit. I think he made his debut when he was 29. Has anybody ever made a later debut and became a Hall of Famer now? Maybe Satchel Page, but that was just because of, you know, the. The color barrier.
Paulie
Yes, Paulie, we discussed this a while back. The latest start to become a Hall of Famer. I think Warren Moon is up there because he was in the CFL for
Dan Patrick
a long time for some reason. Well, he was a black quarterback because he threw one of the best deep. It's not one of those where he's just a runner. He. He was a runner, but that's not what he led with. He was such a great passer. He made his debut coming. I think he won five CFL titles with Edmonton. And they're like, yeah, maybe he can play. Like, did you see him in Washington when he was in college? Let's take a break. Phone calls coming up. And our play of the day next.

Something.
Dan Patrick
Six seconds to go. It's in the right hands. Pritchard half court. Pritchard moving to his left. Pritchard dribbles around. MB launches off the wrong foot and he hit it at the buzzer.
Chris Sims
And with the nation watching, Peyton Pritchard
Dan Patrick
is putting on a game four show courtesy of the Celtics radio network. Pritchard ended up with 32, Celtics had 24 three pointers, Boston up three one. Going back to Boston for game five. That's your play of the day. Play of the day. Brought to you by Dude. Dude Wipes. I like that Fritzi had a couple of packs, large packs of dude wipes that he was putting in his luggage there. Did you have to take stuff out of your luggage so you could make way for the dude wipes that you brought to Pittsburgh?
Todd
I did have to wear an extra sweatshirt even though it was like 81 degrees in Pittsburgh, just to make room.
Dan Patrick
Available at Amazon and major retailers nationwide. Dude wipes. Best clean. Pants down. Fritzi wants to make sure that everybody pronounces Diego Pavia correctly. A lot of people say Pavia, but it's Pavia. But as Paulie said, you don't have to worry about that much.
Stugots
Come on.
Dan Patrick
And I was like, wait a minute.
Paulie
That means spiritedness was off the air.
Dan Patrick
Oh, it was. I never know.
Paulie
Pavia.
Dan Patrick
Pavia. Diego Pavia. Hey, if he gets to play, great personality, great. But I don't know how much playing time you're going to get in Baltimore. But he gets a tryout. Not signed, but a tryout to get signed. Yes, Paul.
Paulie
It's kind of a bummer because he had this great story going all year. Goes to the Heisman. Has a couple social media hiccups that really turn the tide against him and you know, self inflicted wounds, man.
Dan Patrick
All right, let's see. Chris in Syracuse leads us off, by the way. We'll update our poll results. Settle on one and get to your phone calls here. Hi, Chris.
Chris (Caller)
Hey, thanks, Dan. Hey. I got a best and worse and a personal best. My personal best, my Cincinnati Reds, who are currently riding a nine game World series win streak that may be up to 13 in six months, playing great baseball. And I saw it was interesting when they were playing the Marlins a couple weeks ago. The Marlins are breaking 150-year-old tradition of catchers calling pitches. Their manager is doing it from the dugout. They say with all the data he has at his disposal, it may catch on with other teams. And man, for a sport that resisted change forever, last couple of years they've really come to embrace it. And my best to Jeremiah love. Getting what, 53 million guaranteed from the Cardinals? Something like that. The Cards paid that to a running back who's walking into a less than ideal situation to succeed. It'll be interesting to see in three years or so how his career goes compared to his running mate at Notre Dame, Jadarian Price, who goes to a great situation. Seattle will share the workload and also a first round pick and as far as value value goes, Seattle in the long run may be better off with their first round pick than Arizona. And my worst Houston Rockets head coach Friday night at his post game press conference he got way too caught up in the moment. I'm sure used to management as players and Rocket fans can't be happy with this rant and blow by blow blame game.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, good. I know. Talk about growing up, you know, KD not playing, not a good situation. But they ended up winning last night. Cheryl in Florida. Hi Cheryl. Best and Worst of the Weekend hey dan.
Cheryl (Caller)
Hey guys. First time, long time, five six and athletic 150. Thank you for that. I am a retired high school athletic director and truly love your show and the insight that all you guys bring to the sports world. Thank you for that. Worst of the weekend of course, the Diana Rossini My Grable story. It's grown into something just huge. What a catastrophe. Just awful. But I did want to get to the best of the weekend was this. Chris Collinsworth was a student at the high school where I was the athletic director and he graduated from here, the school on the east coast of Florida. And Chris, I'm still involved in our hall of Fame induction and ceremonies and such and we do it every two years and Chris is in our Sports hall of Fame and his dad, who used to be our principal is in the hall of Fame. And last weekend we inducted Chris's brother Greg into the Sports hall of Fame and Chris came and accepted on his brother's behalf who sadly passed away from cancer. And Greg was being inducted for being a standout player in basketball way before the three point line was ever recognized. Greg was just truly amazing and Chris was just so humbled and touched and so proud to accept this award for his brother Greg.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, yeah. Chris had a great career certainly at Florida. Started out as a quarterback there. That. Thank you, Cheryl. Thank you for sharing. I'll get to some of these other phone calls here. Beginning of next hour. We'll give you our best and worst of the weekend as well. Dylan, do we have a poll question for the first hour?
Dylan
We do, Dan. This was actually from my friend Todd back here. Diego Pavia went undrafted because he just isn't good enough for the pros. Comes off a bit too arrogant, makes questionable off field comments and decisions. And I added, it's just misunderstood.
Dan Patrick
How about short and short and short only fit 4.
Todd
You can't misunderstand someone's height. I guess your height's your height unless you get one of those spine things I was telling you about where you
Dan Patrick
can make no, no, no, we're not doing that.
Dylan
Talk to Tom Cruise about that.
Dan Patrick
No, we're not doing that. Well, he's got lifts in his shoes. Hour 2 On this Monday, right after this, on draft day.
