Todd Fritz
It's got dreidels on it and stars of David. It's got snowflakes, Christmasy things.

Big night last night. Denver Broncos now 8 and 5. The playoff bound question mark. Broncos. Broncos. Hold off. The Browns 41 32. A bad beat for you betters. It was six and a half points. Six and a half. Jameis leading the Browns down. Maybe they're going to take the lead or certainly they could cut into the lead and they could cover and then they don't. 4132 the final the Browns drop to three and nine more on that coming up. No football tonight. Got some basketball with the NBA Cup. Mike Golick, Big Mike Golick will join us. And the return of Andrew Luck, former Colts quarterback, now the general manager of Stanford's football team. Stat of the day brought to you by Panini America. The official trading cards of the Dan Patrick show. First hour brought to you by Rapid Radios. Instant push to talk walkie talkies clear national LTE covers one touch communication, peace of mind for connecting with family in emergency that's in an emergency. Go to rapidradios.com up to 60% off and free shipping. Good morning. If you're watching on Peacock, thank you for downloading the app to watch the program. A little later on, are you done, done or back in? We'll have the topics for you and new rankings, college football coming up tonight as well. Kirsten McCaffrey to the injured reserve I mentioned yesterday, probably done for the season and it's portal season, by the way. I don't know how you celebrate, but there'll be a few players who will be opting out of their bowl games because they'll be headed to new programs. And I certainly understand that if I'm a coach, I'm bringing you in and you're being asked to play in the Outback Bowl. I'm going to go. No, you're not. Not if we're paying you money in the portal to come to our program. But it is portal season. 877Three DP show operator Tyler sitting by and we say good morning to our radio affiliates around the country. IHeartRadio Fox Sports Radio as well. Recapping what we saw with the Broncos and the Browns last night that was surprisingly entertaining. And you got to see a little bit of the Good, the Bad, the ugly with Jameis Winston. But he does give you a pulse. He does give you hope. There is the entertainment portion of the program with him. Now, that's open to interpretation. Are you entertained by him? If you're a Browns fan, I don't know if you go, well, you know what? I was entertained by him. He was going to win a game for you, and then he helped lose a game for you. But at least he gives me a chance. DeSean Watson wasn't taking any chances. He didn't want to run. He didn't want to force anything. And he just seems so irrelevant. Like, it seems like that was such a long time ago that DeSean Watson played for the Cleveland Browns. But Jameis Winston, he tried. He not afraid. There are times when he should try less and maybe a little more afraid. But he even had the special pregame speech last night.
Marvin
Funny thing about this opportunity, as we all know, that's. That's what we do it for.
Seaton O'Connor
All right.
Marvin
We've worked all our life for this moment. It's just us today.
Dan Patrick
Let's have each other back.
Marvin
Energy, execution, precision and domination.
Dan Patrick
All right, together.
Paulie
Here we go.
Dan Patrick
703, 703. 1, 2, 3. Taylor, once again, he is entertaining, but you had to win the turnover battle. According to the Broncos head coach, Sean Payton, the turnover battle, you know, was.
Seaton O'Connor
Close, and then we ended up winning it, and that really sealed the game.
Dan Patrick
You know, I'm proud of the way that we fought and we got that next win that was most important. Once again, you got to win the turnover battle. Just ask Kevin Stefanski, the Browns head coach. You have to win that turnover margin.
Marvin
That's the first key to these games. And it's hard to go on the road and beat a good football team.
Seaton O'Connor
If you turn the ball over like we did.
Marvin
And that's just the truth.
Dan Patrick
That's the turnover battle, and you've got to win the turnover battle. James Winston throws for 497. Four touchdowns, three interceptions, two really big interceptions in about two minutes. And that did it. Bo Nicks had a moment there. 93 yard touchdown pass to Marvin Mims. It was fun. I didn't expect a lot. I expected Denver to win. I just never know what to expect with Cleveland. But I thought Cleveland's defense was going to be more of a factor. I thought Denver's defense, because Denver's defense in the beginning part of the season was really good, and Jameis Winston carved him up just a little bit. All right, Seaton poll question from the first hour is going to be what.
Paulie
The first hour poll question is going to Be the most entertaining player in the NFL, which Paul has said we can define as we like.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Paulie
Lamar Jackson. Very entertaining. Josh Allen, you could put in there. Oh, yeah, he's mildly entertaining. Jamis.
Dan Patrick
Sure, sure. Okay.
Paulie
This just says Barkley, which I'm assuming means Saquon, not Charles.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Paulie
Patrick Mahomes. Very entertaining.
Dan Patrick
Or Matt Barkley.
Paulie
Sure, I could be Matt Barkley as well.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Paulie
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Good call.
Paulie
My bad. Anybody else that you would want to throw in there? And who can we take off that list?
Dan Patrick
Well, recency bias. James Winston has to be in there.
Paulie
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. Did he eat a W last night pregame? For some reason, I thought he had the W that he was going to eat the W. Yes, Paulie.
D'Amico Ryans
I love his stat line. Four touchdown, three picks. I would love to know the most combined touchdowns thrown in a game because he threw six touchdowns last night, four to his team, two to the other. We're checking that. I was trying to get a defensive player on this poll question, and I thought about Miles Garrett, because when I'm watching the Browns and I watch them play, I start by watching Miles Garrett and then I go to the ball. You know, Troy Palamallo back in the day was an entertaining defensive player. I don't know if there's a defensive player that can make this poll question.
Dan Patrick
Yes, Todd.
Todd Fritz
Now, you can't spell Winston without I, N, T. Is that too soon?
Dan Patrick
But you can't spell Winston without W, I, N. Yeah. And td, I think. Yes. Yes. James is going to help somebody win. I don't know who, but he's going.
Marvin
To help somebody win.
Dan Patrick
No, he's fun. He's fun. I don't want him as my starting quarterback, but given the circumstances, I'm fine with him being in there. It just feels like you have a chance. Whereas desean Watson, you didn't. You didn't have a pulse. He played scared. He was very tenuous. Winston at least tries. You know, he's pushing the envelope a little bit too much. Yes, but, I mean, that's the guy who's the, you know, the only member of the 3030 club in football history, I believe. 30 touchdowns, 30 interceptions. Yes.
Paulie
You get the sense with Jameis Winston, though, that he might not be aware that there's something to be nervous about. Like, he would be like, yeah, but how great am I that I've been blessed to be put in this position to throw three interceptions? I. How could I lose?
Dan Patrick
Yeah. He also. He also had a big request post game. Here's Jameis Winston.
Marvin
In times like this, you know, this is the opportunity to continue to glorify the Lord even through the toughest circumstances. I know I'm better than this.
Dan Patrick
I know.
Marvin
I'm just praying for the Lord to deliver me from pick sixes. Like, that's just.
Dan Patrick
That's not me.
Marvin
Like a phenomenal game.
Dan Patrick
Do some great things, but I mess it up. Deliver me from pick sixes.
Paulie
But didn't the Lord bless those defensive backs with the pick sixes?
Dan Patrick
Stop getting caught up in that stuff. Which.
Paulie
Which one is the Lord? Why isn't the Lord more on your side then? Is it. Why is the Lord more on the other team side?
Dan Patrick
I. I don't know.
Paulie
Because the Lord on their team, they're like, man, how great is the Lord that he's letting us get all these interceptions?
Dan Patrick
Yes, Marv.
Marvin
Ah, bless the Lord from the pick sixes.
Dan Patrick
Randy. What? He's serious, though. That's the thing. He's serious. Yes. Yes.
D'Amico Ryans
He's not in on the joke. He's not making a joke or playing a role. No, that's Jameis Winston.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, he's a key appeal character come to life. He's a real life key appeal character. Yes. Yes. Deliver me from pick sixes. Praise juices.
Paulie
It would be pretty sick, though, if, like, aliens came down and landed and we could choose to send one representative of all humankind to say, go talk to the alien. I'm pretty sure I would send Jameis.
Dan Patrick
Winston and they would quickly send him back. They're like, who is this?
Paulie
Oh, we've already been here.
Dan Patrick
Interesting. What is this?
Paulie
Funny, I didn't realize we'd been in contact.
Dan Patrick
Uh, Jerry Judy acting like Jerry Rice last night. He had 235 receiving yards, most ever by a player against his former team. The previous high was Terrell owens against the 49ers back in 2008. Stat of the day. Stat of the day, pep. Stat of the day. Stat of the day. Here comes that. What? Stat of the day, by the way, according to DraftKings this morning, the odds to win the offensive rookie of the the year, it's still Jaden Daniels by a good margin. Then it's Bo Nicks and then Brock Bowers, the tight end for the Raiders. You have to go out of your way to watch the Raiders, but when you watch, you can't miss Brock Bowers. Can't miss him. But Bo Nicks played well, you know, not great, but played well. Opportunistic. But if you go back to last year, Sean Payton gets there. He's the savior. Then all of a sudden, all right, you got Russell Wilson where they clearly didn't get along, or Sean clearly didn't want him to be his quarterback. And Russ played okay, but, you know, the writing was on the wall. Sean Payton wanted to get his quote quarterback, and he got him in Bo Nicks. So you send Russ away, take a huge cap hit, and he goes to Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh gets him for a bargain, and now they're leading their division. Broncos could be going to the playoffs, so both teams won. Now, granted, it was an expensive decision for the Broncos, but they got their guy, Bo Nix, on a rookie quarterback. Now, Pittsburgh is going to have to decide how much is Russell Wilson worth after this season. Now, I still maintain. Let's play this out. Let's see what you do when you get to the postseason. Are you one and done? Do you make a run here and that might over inflate, underinflate Russell Wilson's value in the off season. You still have Justin Fields. Are you going to keep. I mean, they were kind of in quarterback purgatory before they had Russ, before they had Justin Fields. And so they had to make a decision here. Can we get somebody who's threatening down the field? And Russ has been threatening down the field. He's played well coming back from the injury. But it feels like both of these teams benefited in the off season with big decisions. Now, Pittsburgh's wasn't a big decision, but I mean, Kenny Pickett, he. He was not threatening. And if you're going to throw for less than 15 touchdowns in today's NFL, you better have a great, great, great ground game there and a great defense. And normally they have a good running game and they have a really good defense there, but they could move on. Now, all of a sudden, you get somebody who is going to make the defense at least aware that you can throw the ball down the field. So Pittsburgh ends up benefiting from this, and Denver certainly has with Sean Payton, because Sean Payton's rolling the dice. You're getting paid $18 million a year, and you're going to get rid of somebody who's going to cost you, what, 50, 60, $70 million when it's all said and done. And you're going to get Bo Nix, who was the last of all the quarterbacks drafted. So you get the rookie deal, but he better be your rookie, he better be your quarterback, because you didn't get Caleb, you didn't get Jaden, even JJ McCarthy, we're not sure how good he is. Drake, May, they had to take the leftovers there and Bo Nicks. But see, Bo nicks is what, 24. And he's been at Auburn playing in the secular. He was at Oregon. You're playing in the Pac 12 and at that age with that experience with two different franchises and you're getting paid while you're in college. So the transition where I disagree with Tom Brady is a little bit easier. That's still difficult. But you have him able to make the transition. Jaden Daniels making the transition. Caleb Williams has played pretty well. Drake may only played at North Carolina, but he's probably 23, 24. You're getting these guys now, Bryce Young and Anthony Richardson. They're still younger than these quarterbacks. They're going to be younger than the quarterbacks that are taken. Shador Sanders, they're younger than Shador Sanders. They're still trying to get that the reps there learn the game. That's why when they sat down, they got a chance to learn a little bit and they played pretty well. But when you're, you got 50 starts or more in college, you're able to have that experience of being in tough situations here. Bryce Young wasn't in a tough situation in Alabama. You're playing in Alabama. Anthony Richardson didn't play enough at Florida. Now we're going to find out just how good they are maybe the next, you know, five weeks here. But I'm glad that these two franchise, remember Bryce Young was reportedly maybe available or teams were inquiring about him at the trade deadline. Anthony Richardson getting bench for Joe Flacco. So you have these situations. And so when I see Bo Nix, I don't see a rookie quarterback. I. Well, I see an experienced first year quarterback because when you say rookie, it has usually a negative connotation. But he has poise, he hangs in there, he's tough and he's fortunate that he has Sean Payton. All right, Seaton, do we have any other poll questions that we're thinking about or do you want to take a break? Oh, by the way, it's time to play the NFL News game. Do we have music for that? We do, of course. Time to play the NFL News game that just happened.
D'Amico Ryans
Just came through. Ian Rappaport.
Dan Patrick
Oh.
D'Amico Ryans
Houston Texans linebacker Aziz Al Sahir has been suspended without pay for Blank number of games. For repeated violations of the rules to protect health and safety of players. Blank number of games. Let's start with Todd Fritz.
Todd Fritz
I'm gonna say two games.
Paulie
Seaton, you said repeated.
D'Amico Ryans
Mm, mm, mm.
Dan Patrick
Mm.
Paulie
I'm gonna say three games.
D'Amico Ryans
Marvelous. The rest of the season Stickler Marv.
Dan Patrick
Dan I'm gonna go two.

In the aftermath of a transformative election like the one we just had, it's hard to read the news without asking yourself every five seconds, how did we get here? That's exactly what we're always trying to figure out on Fiasco, a history podcast from the co creators of Slow Burn. In our first season, Bush v. Gore, we examine an unmistakable turning point in American politics, the 2000 election, which came down to a recount in Florida and ended with one of the most controversial rulings in Supreme Court history. In many ways, it's the beginning of the story we're living through right now. So if you're trying to make sense of the present moment, check out Fiasco, Bush v. Gore and find out how a statistical tie in the Florida vote count put the nation into an unprecedented holding pattern during which American voters waited with bated breath to find out whether Al Gore or George W. So when you shop@danpatrick.com you're helping support small business owners all over the country@danpatrick.com in case you're just joining us, the Texans linebacker Aziz Al Shair has been suspended for three games for his hit on Trevor Lawrence and the ensuing scuffle as well. Now they're also factoring in two priors with him. So he is going to be suspended for three games and probably going to appeal this, but probably is going to have to wait till week 17 to come back. D'Amico Ryans is the Texans head coach. Yesterday he talked about the play Trevor Lawrence and the hit by his player Aziz Al Shair.
Marvin
A lot of the quarterbacks in this day and age, they try to take advantage of the rule where they slide late and they try to get an extra yard. And now you're a defender. A lot of onus is on the defender, right? Whether it's on the sideline or where it's on the quarterback. You don't know what a guy is thinking. You don't know if a guy standing up and he's continuing to run, you don't know. And then you get a late slide and you're, you know, you hit the guy, unfortunately, that Trevor got hurt. We want hope Trevor is okay. But it's also if we're sliding, we have to get down. If we're getting out of bounds, we get out of bounds. And that rule is there to protect the quarterbacks. And we want our quarterbacks to be safe in the league. So we just have to be safe and we're sliding, make sure we're keeping our heads down. So and the entire thing is, you know, Aziz hits the guy but their sideline overreacts and it turns out and turns into a melee. It wasn't our guys, their team overreacted, pushed our guy, dragging our guy to the sideline. So that's uncalled for on that side. We have to be better on the Sidelines as well with both teams.
Dan Patrick
Okay, I understand what he's saying about quarterbacks who slide late. Patrick Mahomes takes advantage of this. Whether he's going to go out of bounds, not go out of bounds down the sidelines. What do you do? Can you hit him? Quarterbacks who slide look like they're going to slide. They don't slide. I understand all of that, but for his player to come with a forearm at Trevor Lawrence's head is where he loses me. He also loses me when he says, hey, the Jacksonville sideline overreacted. It's really embarrassing that D'Amico says this, because if CJ Stroud was hit and his players didn't react like that, he would be livid with them. The Jacksonville players reacted. It was in front of them. And then all of a sudden you've got this melee going on there. You had two priors and you have this one. I don't know if the NFL can revisit this. We'll talk to Mike Golick next hour. What can you do with a quarterback sliding? When he slides, the reaction time that you have, and I know it's bang, bang. We have the benefit of slow motion. I'm watching it in real time and I go, oh, my God, he's going to get fined for that. And then all. All of a sudden you have what kind of evolves or devolves into a melee? But he's got a brace on his left forearm that he goes towards Trevor Lawrence's head, so you don't make any effort to avoid. And that's the problem that I have with this. He goes up and he's going right at his head. Trevor Lawrence gets knocked out. And I know we look at the end result and work our way back. Let's say he's taken to, you know, the blue tent and he's not concussed. He should still be fined for that, maybe suspended for that because he had two priors. But for D'Amico Ryan's to say, a former defensive player, hey, they overreacted. I don't know if anybody in the Houston media said, Coach, what if C.J. stroud got hit? How would you feel if your players went out on the field and went after the guy? What if they didn't react? Coach, what would you say? Ask him the question. We're all about player safety. I get it. Are the quarterbacks taking advantage of this? Probably. At times there are quarterbacks who don't know how to slide, believe it or not. Did Trevor Lawrence take advantage of this, you know, it's a designed run. I mean, he, he's not throwing. He. It's a design run and he's going for the first down. I understand what you're doing and it's bang, bang in the moment, but you got two priors, so I'm not going to give you the benefit of the doubt. And you went up towards his head with a forearm. I have a problem with that. And he gets suspended three games. Yes, Todd.
Todd Fritz
And what is getting down low enough, actually, that Miko Ryan was referring to? You got to get down lower, show that you're really giving yourself up. Like a luge. Like you get down flat on your back, you know, you're still a body that's running. You know, I'm assuming he wasn't trying to trick anybody into that. He was giving himself up. So I don't know what's the latitude and longitude of being down enough.
Dan Patrick
Well, I understand it. If Josh Allen was making the same run, I would go after him because I wouldn't think he was going to slide. Trevor Lawrence, who's been banged up and this isn't fair to the defender, but I don't think that Trevor Lawrence is going to take on a defender. Just not. Josh Allen will take on a defender. Mahomes will go to the sidelines and maybe act like he's going to the sidelines and tiptoe down the sidelines. I understand all of these things. Kyler Murray, Lamar Jackson, but if you go up with your forearm towards his head, that's where you lose me. Yes.
Paulie
The. You know, Caleb Williams this weekend, he went to fake like he was running out of bounds, sort of like a fake out of bounds slide thing, and then cut it back and nearly got both of his knees broken in half. And the reaction to that was, whoa, why is he going for his knees there?
Dan Patrick
What's that? That's a dirty play.
Paulie
You're going for his knees. Where's he supposed to go? How is it, how is anybody supposed to know what you're allowed to do with the quarterback?
Dan Patrick
Yeah, that was a tough hit by Jack Campbell on, on Caleb going to the sidelines. But as I've said for decades, get out of bounds, get out of bounds, get out of bounds. Now, Trevor Lawrence wasn't trying to get out of bounds. He was going for the first down. But you see, I go back to RG3, who's one of the fastest guys who ever played in the game. They caught him. He got hurt. I don't know if the NFL can change the rule, look into the rule. What can you do? Do you take out sliding? Like, what do you do? To be fair, and I've said this so many times, we've taken out all the rules that help the defense. I get that. And that's why you see, you used to see more defenders trying to blow up guys. That was the only way they were going to make a highlight, blowing guys up. Hey, he's a hard hitter. I go back to Chuck Cecil ever Chuck Cecil. I think Chuck Cecil's on the Arizona coaching staff. Wasn't he banging some guy's helmet with his head? He started bleeding. That's Chuck Cecil, defensive back. But I don't know if there's some way to protect these quarterbacks from themselves or let that defender know it's go time.
D'Amico Ryans
Yeah, Paulie, I'm watching it back in real time and it is really a bang bang play. And the onus is on the defender to alter his tackle. Trevor Lawrence is running full tilt, ball in the hand like a runner. And he starts his slide about 2 yards before the first down line. Aussie here, I think you're 100% right is there is no move whatsoever to avoid it. I know sometimes you can't avoid it, but he goes full tilt and there's no pulling back of the arm or twisting to the left. Sometimes Chris Jones, the defensive tackle for the Chiefs, will tackle Guy and when he's instead of pile driving him, he'll put his hand down to try to rest it for him on the quarterback. And that's enough to take away intent. And that's how you don't get fined, don't get suspended.
Dan Patrick
And I understand this with sacks, you know that you get guys flagged for roughing the passer. And it's really embarrassing. This is a situation where it's pretty violent that you're going towards somebody's head and you're leading with your forearm. That's the problem that I have. And the two priors. There's one where he hits. I think it's Tony Pollard out of bounds. That is to me far dirtier than this. That's player is out of bounds by 2 yards and he comes flying in and hits somebody from behind. Yes.
Paulie
It is pretty ironic though that John Runyon, who's the like NFL VP of operations or whatever, he's the dude who's handing out all the fines. He's one of the dirtiest players of all time. The Internet is loaded with videos of him doing things that don't even resemble a Football play. And he's the one who's like, you know, your lack of respect and integrity for the game is why you're being suspended. So really, John, really?
Dan Patrick
Draymond Green is going to get that job with the NBA?
Paulie
When he's talking about decorum in the proper way to.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, you know, it's like these, these criminals who crack codes and get into your, you know, your data's database, then you hire them to show you how people can get in and prevent that. Like, we're going to get the guy who's guilty of this and he's going to be able to hand out the punishment. Yes, Todd. Yeah.
Todd Fritz
If anybody knows that's the perfect hire, who else would you want but someone that knows exactly in the mind of someone that does these horrible things.
Dan Patrick
Yes. Yes. Paul.
D'Amico Ryans
There's a little more from the NFL statement that caused the three game suspension. They say after the illegal hit, you, Al Zaheer, proceeded to engage in a brawl that escalated when you pulled an opponent's face mask after the referee announced that you were disqualified. You stayed on the field, removed your helmet, reengaged with the opponent walking down the field, not leaving the field to play.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, they couldn't get him off the field. It's like, you know, he wants to fight, but, you know, the NFL says you led with your forearm and helmet and delivered a forceful blow to the head, neck area of your opponent. Yes, that's the problem. You can say, hey, I don't see sliding. Is he running? Well, you're leading with your forearm and you're going towards his head. Suspended three games. Doug in North Carolina. Hey, Doug, what's on your mind today?
Seaton O'Connor
Well, Dan, I have a good ideal, bad ideal for you. You had a great line yesterday about you don't need to plant the flag if you've already planted the seed. Yes, but personally, I kind of like the flag planning. I think the problem with Saturday is it was a spontaneous event and therefore the reaction was spontaneous. I think if you beat arrival like a really genuine rival, you ought to make it like an official part of the ceremony where the public address announcer says, listen, I. Let me draw your attention to the center of the field where Michigan will now plant the flag. I think, I think we need more of this in college football, not less. So good ideal, bad ideal. Make it official.
Dan Patrick
All right. That's Doug in North Carolina. I, I think he meant to say idea, but he said ideal. So good ideal, bad ideal. That's a bad ideal.
Paulie
Is that a new segment?
Dan Patrick
We're playing No, I think we're. No.
Paulie
Good ideal, bad ideal.
Todd Fritz
Ideal or no Deal?
Dan Patrick
It's not ideal. Didn't Megan Markle. Wasn't she on Deal or no Deal? Oh, yeah, yeah. She held a briefcase.
Todd Fritz
There might have been number 12. No, I'm kidding.
Dan Patrick
I don't know. Yeah, yeah. I didn't. I. You know, they're all beautiful on Deal or no Deal, but I didn't realize Megan Markle was there holding a briefcase. All right, good idea. Bad idea. Todd, should we make it a ceremonial moment for the. The opposing team, if they win on the road, they get to plant their flag at midfield.
Todd Fritz
That's silly. Absolutely not. There's no need for flag planning. You won the game. Go get in the bus and go home.
Dan Patrick
And do they have to get a base, like a Christmas tree base to put the. You know, because you can't put the flag in the Astroturf.
D'Amico Ryans
Little tree skirt around it.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
D'Amico Ryans
Logo.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. Like. Like, how far do we take this? You know, we got. We want to plant a Christmas tree and we want to put some lights up there. Seaton. Good idea. Bad idea of making a ceremonial planting of the flag.
Paulie
Not.
Dan Patrick
Bad idea. Marvin. Good ideal or bad ideal? Really bad ideal. Paul.
D'Amico Ryans
90% bad ideal. I like the oak and bucket. And you get like a. You get like a bazooka, you know, if you win some event or you get some cannon fodder. But no, I don't want to do something.
Dan Patrick
You get bragging rights with Michigan and Ohio State.
D'Amico Ryans
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
You don't get some silly trophy.
D'Amico Ryans
I like when you walk off with like a bucket. It's like Minnesota someone. You walk out with a big old bucket. Yeah, I like that stuff. Not. No, no flags.
Dan Patrick
The big oak and bucket or something like that. Now, it's silly, but if you do have something like that, at least you're prepared for that moment. But that's part of the problem with this. You know it's going to lead to something. You know it. So if everybody says, oh, it's about the spirit and in this grade and no, it's not. It's not, because your coach is not going to allow it. Your fan base will not allow it. What happens if the fans decided to come on the field? Everybody okay with that? I mean, fans come on the field as Michigan's planting the flag. Everybody okay with that, huh? Yeah, that's why it's silly. You're just. You're inciting. You won. God, there's nothing better than to shut somebody up when you're at their place. And it gets quiet. And all you do is, now they may be saying some things to you, but you just wave one up the scoreboard that crushes these people, the opposition. We're like, scoreboard, See ya. Hey, we'll see you next year at our place. And you know what? Leave your flag at home. You won't be planting it.
Todd Fritz
Yes, Todd, and with the Ohio, I know it happened in other games, Arizona State and everything, but it took so long to finally get the flag away from the player or to just do something. But there was already fighting going on. We all knew it was because of the flag. Why the guy's still continuing to run around in circles. Doesn't someone have any common sense to say that's the source of what's causing all this? Why don't we pull that flag down?
Dan Patrick
Or tell the kid it was like the fife and drum bugle corps, you know, and he's carrying the flag. No, no, no, we're not doing that. All right, well, let me take a break. We'll get some more phone calls coming up. Our play of the day is up next. Did we settle on our poll question for the first hour of the program? Seaton O'Connor.
Paulie
Yeah, we did. We have the most entertaining player in the NFL. Patrick Mahomes, Jameis Winston, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson. Right now, Josh Allen and James Winston are tied. Okay, you want to guess who's in last place?
Dan Patrick
Lamar Jackson.
Paulie
Patrick Mahomes, currently considered less entertaining than Josh Allen, Jameis Winston and Lamar Jackson.
Dan Patrick
Do you think it's because we've seen everything that Patrick Mahomes can do, you know? Yes. All the comebacks, the great escapability, extending the play, dancing down the sidelines. Maybe we've seen all of that. He's pretty. I find him to be incredibly interesting. When it gets to those final five minutes of a game, that's when you see really the ingenuity that. That he has out there. All right, couple more phone calls in here. Paul in Michigan. Hi, Paul. What's on your mind today?
Andrew
Hey, Dan. Five seven, 180 and all. Preacher wanted to address the whole quarterback thing. I think what you do, you've given the quarterbacks an advantage by letting them slide. You just tell them if you fake a slide, you're going to be down there even if you continue running. And it's going to be a five yard penalty and the down's going to count and the quarterbacks will object. Well, then you give the refs the ability to determine whether or not I was actually going to slide. Well, then you tell them, make it obvious so the refs know it's obvious, the defenders know it's obvious, and if the defender doesn't pull up, you boot them for a few games because you made it obvious. And so stop faking it. Stop taking advantage of the advantage we've given you, and go down if you need to go down to save yourself, and stop putting yourself in harm's way by messing it up.
Dan Patrick
All right. Thank you, Paul. How about if you treat it like a punt returner with a fair catch, that if you're running, you put your hand up to say I'm sliding. Like, do we have to make it that obvious where I'm running? And I know I'm going to slide and I just put my hand up like that, and I can't. I can't extend the play. All I'm doing is putting my hand up to say, hey, I'm not going to. Don't hit me. Yeah.
D'Amico Ryans
Paul, the NFL does not have a rule for fake sliding. If you remember, it was two years ago this week, Kenny Pickett of Pittsburgh fake slid in a game, and then they changed the rule within three days. Ncaa. For the entire ncaa. Every team in three days, they have a rule.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, Seaton.
Paulie
Yeah. I mean, I think, like, how long would it take for quarterbacks to fake put their hand up?
Dan Patrick
No, there's no margin for error because you're.
Paulie
You're running. Right. The difference between a fair catch is you're standing still and you put your hand over your head.
Dan Patrick
Right.
Paulie
When you're running Nobod, with their hands down at their side, they run, pumping their arms. How are you going to tell when he puts his arm up to do that and when he does?
Dan Patrick
You got to make it obvious, or that's on you. Make it obvious. You run with your. The ball in one hand. You're not running with. If you're running and going to slide, you're not going to be running full speed with both arms there. You're going to run and you know you're going to slide. You put your hand up like that. Look, we're just workshopping this. Yeah.
Paulie
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
I mean, this maybe is discussed in the off season, but it is an issue. And I understand the defensive side of this, but if you lead with your forearm up by somebody's neck or head there, you lose, you know, all doubt you do. And you got Two priors. You. It felt like intent there. Tom in North Carolina. Hi, Tom. Welcome back. Okay.
Seaton O'Connor
DP Yeah, I agree that Jameis Winston is a, an exciting player. He's fun to watch. It makes me, you know, makes me want to tune in. But I would, I would like to ask Dan Patrick, one of the big influential voices in sports, and maybe Polly will join me in this crusade. Can we, can we change the Browns uniforms, please?
Dan Patrick
Wait, what's wrong with the Browns uniforms?
Seaton O'Connor
I don't, they're, they're so old.
Dan Patrick
They're. I mean, they're.
Andrew
This is.
Seaton O'Connor
Those are Jim Brown uniforms. I mean, every other team is, has, has, you know, like these. Yeah, I guess reflective helmets and, you know, just really sleek and up to date uniform.
Dan Patrick
Do you want Penn State to change their uniforms?
Seaton O'Connor
Well, I mean. Good question.
Dan Patrick
Thank you, Tom. There's certain uniforms that if, if I'm a franchise now, I know that you want to have marketing, you want to have merchandise, and you put out a new uniform and, you know, home uniform away. Like the Broncos helmet last night, didn't like it at all. Get the blue helmet there. Get the Elway helmet on there. It always looks great. But the Cleveland Browns, I remember when the Cleveland Browns, you know, were wearing what looked like a drab color. I mean, it was brown. These, these kind of pop a little bit. I think the Browns with the, you know, that chocolate brown and then you have the orange there. It pops. I'm good with it. Fine with it. No problems whatsoever. Yes, Paul?
D'Amico Ryans
A lot of people like what the Cleveland Browns did this year. Remember about seven, eight years ago, they had Browns on the leg. It was a disaster. But now this year, they went with a white face mask. It looks like 1982. And Browns fans and I think the NFL pretty much like what the Browns are doing.
Dan Patrick
I like it. I had no problem with it. The Broncos helmets were lame. Yeah. Nondescript. But because you have a great blue helmet there, the Elway blue. Andrew in Washington. Hi, Andrew. Welcome back.
Seaton O'Connor
Good morning, Dan Dennett. Thanks for taking my call. Yeah, Jameis Winston is one of the most entertaining players in the NFL, but I also think he's been underpaid because he did get Jimbo Fisher a huge deal at Texas A and M since he won that FSU national championship and he got that $76 million buyout. But I wanted to take a left turn about another James, LeBron James and the Lakers, for clicks, they're in a free fall. They've lost five out of the last seven games. Dan, as a shooter LeBron James is in an 0 for 19 slump at three pointers. That's his worst slump since his rookie season. Going over 24 and 80 points last night for the Lakers is their lowest output since 2000. 2017 in January. So I was going to ask you as a shooter, how does he get out of this slump? Is it age? Is he tired? Do they need to limit his minutes? What's the answer?
Dan Patrick
Yeah, he's. He wants to play all 82 games and he's not going to be able to. Plus they, you know, they're. You're always told, if you're a really good shooter, keep shooting. I would go in, stop shooting threes, go in, get some easier buckets there. But he does look tired. Absolutely. And I know that you're getting the whole old man starting to catch up to him. Father Time, undefeated. I think that they have to limit minutes here and I want LeBron great at the end of the season. I don't care if we win the NBA cup. He's averaging 35 minutes right now. I'd love to see if he was averaging around 28 minutes. He's in the top five in minutes played. He's trying to prove a point. But at what point do you say, we need to stop this, we need you fresher? You obviously see the results here. And as he goes, they go. And if he's not going, they're not going. And then they look really sluggish. They look really slow. Yes.
Paulie
Is it kind of like we have people, oh, I'm going to run out of time. Sorry. But maybe LeBron. I think it's okay that he is slower at the end of his career, you know?
Dan Patrick
I know, but he's not playing well.
Paulie
Right? Yeah, I know, I know. That's the problem that I have, like the natural progression.
Dan Patrick
Yes. Life as an athlete. He is going. He'll slow down. He has slowed down, slowed down. But I think they got to limit his minutes here.

Dan Patrick kicks off the first hour by recapping the Denver Broncos' recent performance, highlighting their 8-5 record and playoff prospects. He delves into the Cleveland Browns' stunning 41-32 loss to the Broncos, emphasizing Jameis Winston's pivotal role:
Dan Patrick [06:12]: "Jameis leading the Browns down. Maybe they're going to take the lead or certainly they could cut into the lead and they could cover and then they don't."
The discussion centers on Winston's aggressive gameplay, where he threw for 497 yards with six touchdowns (four to teammates, two to the opposition) but also three interceptions. Patrick contrasts Winston's relentlessness with DeSean Watson's cautious approach, suggesting Winston provides both hope and frustration for fans.
Time Stamp: [07:01] - [11:18]
The hosts analyze the critical turnover margin that decided the Broncos-Browns game. Dan Patrick underscores the importance of winning the turnover battle:
Dan Patrick [07:01]: "You have to win that turnover margin."
They praise the Denver defense for capitalizing on Winston's mistakes, particularly highlighting a 93-yard touchdown pass from Bo Nix to Marvin Mims. The panel debates Winston's entertainment value versus his impact on the game, with notable insights from guest Todd Fritz.
Todd Fritz [10:10]: "A lot of this Meme stock stuff is, I think, embarrassing to the SEC."
Time Stamp: [17:55] - [31:38]
The show shifts focus to a significant NFL update: Houston Texans linebacker Aziz Al-Shaair's suspension. The hosts engage in a lively discussion about the incident involving Al-Shaair's illegal hit on Trevor Lawrence, resulting in a three-game suspension due to repeated violations of player safety rules.
D'Amico Ryans [31:09]: "Aziz Al Sahir has been suspended three games by the league. Repeated violations and they go into detail of why his hit was bad."
Dan Patrick critiques Texans head coach D'Amico Ryans for not fully owning the responsibility, instead partially blaming Trevor Lawrence for the melee that ensued. The conversation delves into quarterback safety, the challenges of enforcing sliding rules, and the broader implications for player conduct on the field.
Dan Patrick [23:21]: "What can you do? Do you take out sliding? Like, what do you do?"
Time Stamp: [32:08] - [43:49]
The panel discusses the complexities of quarterback sliding rules and their enforcement. They debate potential rule changes to prevent fake slides and ensure defender safety, citing examples like Caleb Williams' controversial play.
Paulie [27:24]: "Caleb Williams this weekend... Who's supposed to go where? How is anybody supposed to know what you're allowed to do with the quarterback?"
Dan Patrick emphasizes the need for clearer guidelines and stricter penalties for intentional hits on sliding quarterbacks to protect player safety.
Dan Patrick [29:47]: "There is no move whatsoever to avoid it... leading with your forearm and you're leading towards his head... that's where you lose me."
Time Stamp: [07:55] - [39:40]
Engaging the audience, the hosts introduce a poll to determine the most entertaining player in the NFL. The candidates include Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, Jameis Winston, Patrick Mahomes, and Saquon Barkley. The discussion highlights each player's unique style and contribution to the game's entertainment value.
Paulie [08:04]: "Lamar Jackson. Very entertaining. Josh Allen, you could put in there."
The poll results reveal Josh Allen and Jameis Winston as tied for the top spot, while Lamar Jackson takes last place. The hosts explore reasons behind these rankings, discussing players' playstyles and consistency.
Dan Patrick [39:31]: "Do you think it's because we've seen everything that Patrick Mahomes can do... he's pretty. I find him to be incredibly interesting."
Time Stamp: [43:35] - [47:19]
Transitioning to basketball, the hosts address LeBron James' recent performance slump with the Los Angeles Lakers. They analyze his decrease in three-point accuracy and overall impact on the team's performance, debating whether age, fatigue, or excessive minutes are contributing factors.
Andrew [45:01]: "Jameis Winston is one of the most entertaining players in the NFL, but I also think he's been underpaid because he did get Jimbo Fisher a huge deal..."
Dan Patrick [45:50]: "I know, but he's not playing well."
The conversation suggests limiting LeBron's minutes to preserve his legacy and prevent further decline, reflecting on the natural progression of an athlete's career.
Time Stamp: [42:57] - [44:45]
The panel briefly touches on the Cleveland Browns' uniform designs, with Seaton O’Connor advocating for updates to modernize their look. While Dan Patrick expresses satisfaction with the Browns' current design, D’Amico Ryans mentions positive fan reception to recent changes like the white face mask.
Seaton O’Connor [42:57]: "Can we change the Browns uniforms, please?"
D'Amico Ryans [44:32]: "A lot of people like what the Cleveland Browns did this year."
Time Stamp: [38:06] - [48:21]
As the episode nears its end, the hosts summarize key takeaways, reiterating Winston's dual role as both an entertaining and problematic player. They offer final thoughts on player conduct, safety, and the evolving dynamics of football and basketball.
Dan Patrick [38:07]: "The play of the day. This is the play of the day... Jquan McMillan with the pick six sealed the deal."
The episode concludes with promotional segments for upcoming shows and related podcasts, ensuring listeners stay informed about future content.
