We'll talk about the warriors closing out the Rockets and the Rockets got a bright future. The Nuggets close out the Clippers. More on that in a moment. I told you be aware of the Pacers. Feels like a foregone conclusion. The Cavs, as great as they were during the regular season, this is an interesting Pacer team and they are going to continue to bring the offensive noise tonight. Knicks at the Celtics and the Nuggets at the Thunder. The odds makers. Vegas isn't expecting close games. I think both teams, Knicks and The Nuggets are nine nine and a half point underdogs. Greg Popovich, this was about 15 minutes after we left the show on Friday, decided to step down as the spurs head coach Will move into the front office. Scotty Scheffler in dramatic fashion wins the Byron Nelson. Dramatic just because he dominated. And the jets over the Blues in two overtimes in game seven. Speaking of game Sevens, speaking of hockey, Doc Emrick I believe on the show tomorrow. Been a while since we talked to Doc and hope retirement is treating him well. We'll see if we can get that voice. You know, I don't know if he's doing play by play around the house. I don't know what play by play guys do when there's no games to call. Todd did bring up something interesting. Yeah. Breaking news. Breaking news three minutes later. Yes, yes. So I come in today and Todd goes. What do you like best? Down the stretch they come. Go. He shoots, he scores. Touchdown. Eight, nine, ten. It's a knockout. So when you think about all of these things that we say in sports, like what's the best one? So, Todd, I'll let you tell me which one you think is the best. You know, a home run. It could be. It might be. It could be. It is. It's gone. I think, especially recency bias of how exciting the Stanley cup playoffs have been. I'm going to go with, he shoots, he scores. I kind of like that over all the other ones. Okay. I still like down the stretch they come because we don't hear it very often, usually three times a year. And there is something about that. If you've ever been to those races to be in the moment, there's that excitement now you don't hear down the stretch like we do on tv. Sovereignty ends up winning the Kentucky Derby and muddy conditions there. Journalism came in second. I'm glad journalism at least placed in there. I was worried about journalism because in my business, journalism is not going to be in the top three, not going to win, place or show. Yes, Todd, where would riders up and gentlemen, start your engines. Be on that list? Whoa. There's something exciting is about to happen. Start your engines. I would put up there. I don't know about riders, but down the stretch, you know, when you hear that, it's just. It's something magical. And it feels like just about everybody thinks their horse has a chance when down the stretch they come. Though I would probably opt for that just based off recency bias as well. Best and worst of the weekend. We'll get to your phone calls coming up. A gift that keeps on giving is James Harden. And you know, when you look at the regular season, regular season, James Harden, I think 22 points, eight assists. We like The Clippers, people thought, oh, you got a healthy Kawhi Leonard, okay, they can do some damage. They could knock off Denver, they could give Oklahoma City a real tussle. But last night they were blown. It was a no show. They were blown out or over the weekend, I should say. And then you have, you know, what happened. So the Nuggets end up winning, Golden State ends up winning. Now, you got some pretty interesting matchups, but we tend to focus on the team that just lost. So with what happened with the Clippers, and once again, James Harden in a game seven is a no show. Here is his head coach, Ty Liu, on the Clippers losing, you know, a tough loss and like I said, not playing our best game in a situation like this and, you know, a lot of emotions and so just tell the guys, bring it in, you know, one last hug and, you know, we'll talk tomorrow. But, you know, they came out, I thought we came out with a, with a decent mindset. They went to that zone and kind of made a stagnant offensively because the way we were attacking them. And then I thought, you know, when they went to that zone, it just kind of slowed us down offensively and then defensively we didn't, we didn't really, you know, get into them, get closer to the guys and have that pressure. And so they was able to pick us apart. Okay. And this isn't all on James Harden, but there is a pattern here. In his last 13 elimination games, James Harden's teams are 2 and 11. And the numbers are even worse after that. By the way, he was a no show after their losses. He didn't meet with the media. But James Harden, now, he did have 26, 28 points, I think game six. So I thought, okay, maybe this is going to be different for him. 13 elimination games, he shot 39% from the floor. Team is 2 and 11. He's averaged 14 points on 38% shooting. And then you look at some of the other numbers here. Steph Curry, 14 career elimination games. He has scored, I think one time under 20 points once in 16 career elimination games. Kevin Durant under 20 points. LeBron James, 29 career elimination games has never been held under 20 points. Meanwhile, Harden has scored less than 20 points in 12 of 26 career elimination games, including seven of his last 13. This is the stat of the day day brought to you by Panini America. Even more emphatic and embarrassing, James Harden's last three game sevens, he scored seven points, he scored nine points. He scored 22 points. He went 2 for 8. He went 3 for 11. That was in a loss to Boston and 5 of 17 in a loss to Milwaukee back in 2021. I can't have one of my best scores, one of the great scores in the history of the league, get eight shots. Now, he did have double digit assist, okay, but I want him to score. I need him to score, I need him to shoot. I mean, I'd rather that he was 2 for 18 than 2 for 8. I gotta have him getting shots up. But once again, he no showed the Clippers bailout dramatic fashion and you know, we're left to wonder how many more years, how many more postseasons will you get with Kawhi Leonard where he's healthy and playing well. And then you got Harden, who had a good regular season, but trying to match them up in the postseason and get maybe some magic here. And you start to look and you go, okay, where do you kind of fit in here? It looks like the Rockets are going to be here to stay. Now they might add. I know we've talked about Kevin Durant, but you know, if I'm them, I do what Oklahoma City did. Stay the course, keep your nucleus. I don't want to bring in 35, 36 year old Kevin Durant. I'm not trying to catch Magic in one year. I'm going to try to do this, you know, make this sustainable, make this just like okc. And OKC is going to be here for a while now. You have to look and go. If you're the Clippers, where are we? We're kind of in the middle. You know, Denver's gotten depth, they got benches, really contributed. You still got Joker playing at a high level for a few more years. Can Jamal Murray stay healthy? You know, so that could be sustainable for a few more years to be a contender there. Golden State, I mean, you're kind of looking at the last go round, it feels like, or at least maybe one more go round. What about the Lakers with LeBron, you know, you start to look at where you are in your division, in your conference, and that's what I start to wonder about. The Clippers, they're kind of a no man's land. Good team, potentially a really good team. The problem is, is age, injuries and you always going to have James Harden not showing up in big games. But, you know, we sometimes look at these teams as they exit and go, okay, what is the future here? As I said with Detroit, I think they got a bright future. Don't go crazy. And I do think Depth is really the important thing to keep an eye on in the playoffs. Denver showed depth. You gotta have more than six, seven guys. OKC has depth. Cleveland has depth. Indiana has depth. That's sort of the new thing. I don't need three stars. I need two stars and depth. Celtics, they got a lot of depth. They got two big stars, a lot of depth. That's what I would be concentrating on if. If I'm trying to build my team or continue to build my team. Depth. Don't go out there and get a big ticket item. If you have a young nucleus and you're sold on them, let them grow together. Hopefully you get a star or two. I mean, OKC has one star. He's going to be the mvp, but you have a couple other guys who are at least in the conversation of being a star, and that's really important. But Boston, Boston is so deep. Cleveland deep, Indiana deep. Just feels like that's the new wave with, you know, luxury taxes, the apron, as they like to call that. So just some things to keep an eye on in the off season with these teams. Speaking of Denver, Russell Westbrook Jr III, this might be as honest of an answer as you're going to get from an athlete who is assessing his talents. You know, my ability to be able to. To be a force in nature on the floor is what I pride myself on. So whatever that looks like, it may be a turnover, it may be a missed shot, but it may be a steal, maybe a dunk, maybe a mystery, maybe a May3. It's gonna be all of that. It's gonna be everything. So you just take it. Take it for how it comes, and whatever happens, you go with it, okay? He's gonna help somebody win. I don't know if it's his team or your team, but he's gonna help. But he's. And, you know, he gives you that jolt of energy coming off the bench. And this used to be so important. You know, we came up with sixth man of the year, that award. John Havalchek, I think they invented the award for him. With the Celtics, you come off the bench and you give that blast of energy. Kevin McHale was a sixth man yet, guys, Manu Ginobili, they came in and they gave you that boost. That's why I'd love to see Austin Reeves be that sixth man for the Lakers. You come in and all of a sudden you're better than everybody else in that second unit for the other team, and you're able to put up some offense. Russell Westbrook brings you energy and he had to accept coming off the bench as well. But he's fun, he's fun to watch. Buddy Healed went off last night. He was 9 of 11 from 3 point range. And that's one of those where if you're Houston and you go, we're still trailing and Steph Curry hasn't done much, you know you're in trouble because Buddy Healed went off and then Steph had like 14 points in the fourth quarter. But that was Golden State showing Houston, hey, nice try. Get experience and then try it again next year. That was the feeling I got with Houston. Thought they were going to be a team to contend with this year, maybe not a contender, but to contend with. And that proved to be true. And I thought that this was a fact finding mission. Just like with Detroit. You go into the postseason, kind of figure out what do you need. And you saw a team, you saw a coach, they knew what they were doing in that game. It was just experience. Now you do have Steph. You didn't think Buddy Healed was going to go off, but with Golden State, it's fun, fun to see them out there, you know, in the latter stages of careers. Seaton, what's poll question today? For the first hour, it feels like we're kind of kicking one around about James Harden's legacy. Maybe, maybe we're going to stumble onto one of those. But can you think of a first ballot hall of Famer who is this flawed? Yes. Right. While also he's an absolute hall of Famer. He's one of the greatest scoring players of all time, probably. Right. He's revolutionized the game in how you draw fouls, how you do certain things. He's had a massive impact on the game while maybe not always getting the credit for that, and then unfortunately doesn't have the success to show for it other than for the most part, extremely great play. Yeah, I don't know if there's another NBA comp for this where that guy was so great, then he didn't show up in the postseason. And he's done this with all the teams he's been with. It's not just the Clippers, but to have the highest of highs where you're averaging 35 a game, you change the game at least with one, one move that you make, but you kind of look at him, you go, yeah, but yeah, Paulie, James Harden led the league in scoring three years in a row. He's led the league in assists two times. The really the only modern day comp Might be Russell Westbrook. Russell led the league in scoring twice. He's led the league in assists three times. And Russell had the bonus of he had four different seasons where he averaged 10 or more rebounds, which is nuts. Yeah, but I, it's weird. I never look at Russell Westbrook as, that's the guy I gotta stop. Like, I, I was always curious about him. You know, he wasn't a good shooter. He, he, he scored. But Harden I think you look at and you go, nobody can stop him. Like when he gets on a, a, a run, nobody's going to stop him. Russ didn't shoot well enough. Where you go, man, you got to stop that now his jumper looks pretty good. He hit a couple of big shots, couple of threes and I go, the form looks really good. Now. I know he's hit the side of the backboard and done, you know he'll miss him when he misses, like, he'll miss really bad. But I don't, I think I, I expect Harden to win more to be, to be the guy in these big moments. I think with Russ, I just thought that, okay, he's still that curiosity. He's going to give you a triple double, but he's also going to help the other team. I never felt that way with Harden until you look at these game sevens, you look at his postseasons. I mean, I don't know if there's another comp here. Marvin, you got one? Anybody who comes to mind. It's crazy because I don't. In the game, sevens is really what separates him from other guys where that's a glaring omission because he's had so many no shows in big time game sevens. He was a part of that game seven where the Rockets missed 27 straight three pointers. Yeah, they almost took out the 73 wins Warriors. Yeah. All right, we'll get to some phone calls. We'll settle on a poll question. 877 3DP show just getting started and we'll be back after this on the Dan Patrick Show. Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in the nation. I didn't get to watch the game, but I watched the highlights. The jets against the Blues and two overtimes and the Blues are up. I think they led three games to one. They were up three to one with two minutes to go. Then all of a sudden, goal. And then with about three seconds to go, another goal and it goes into overtime, a second overtime and Winnipeg beats the blues in Game 7. I might be off on that. Up three games to one, but the jets, that's what we love about hockey. Of all the sports, when you think about regular season and you think about postseason, even if you're not a hockey fan, postseason hockey is better than all the other sports as far as excitement goes. You know, I know we have the super bowl and you know, World Series, obviously, NBA Finals, all those things. Now March Madness can be up there with that feel, but we didn't have many of those moments this March Madness. But with hockey and one goal games and the storylines and that's why I wanted to have Doc Emmerich on tomorrow. He'll join us on the program. All righty. We'll settle on a poll question there. Seaton, what do you have? For me, this is a fun one from, from Dylan, as a matter of fact. Oh, okay. Who had a better run in their respective sport? Greg Popovich, Warren Buffett? You could also say bigger. Retirement announced this weekend. Warren Buffett stepping down. It's that Berkshire Hathaway, I would say. Well, okay. Whose legacy Would you rather have Warren Buffett's or Greg Popovich? I'm gonna go Warren Buffett. Yeah. I'll go Greg on that one. You would? Yeah. Yeah. Warren Buffett didn't have any losing seasons. He won the lottery every year. He got. He got Tim Duncan and Victor Wimbanyama every year. Yes. Todd, if legacy doesn't necessarily equal money, I would go with Seaton. I would take Greg Popovich for legacy. Obviously, money is a whole other world of numbers we're talking about. Thank you, Todd. Welcome our starting lineup, the king of comedy, Fritzi C. Yes. Paul. Yeah. Warren Buffett's still going. Relatively good health, I think. Mid 90s, 94. I saw a story on him yesterday. He told us this as well. He's in the same house that he's owned since 1958. Yeah, I've driven by it's. And it's. I wouldn't say it's modest, but it's under 4,000 square feet. Yeah. You would never know that one of the richest men in the world lives there when you drive by. But, yeah, I drove by it. There have to be a lot of people soon as they get there. No, more like, can we go over to Warren Buffett's house? Yeah. Uber driver takes you over, you drive by and you go, okay, then that's it. It's comfortable. I don't need a mansion. Why would I move out? That's your Warren Buffett. That's pretty good. That's pretty good. Seaton's laugh. A lot of memories there. I'm gonna stay put. Okay. All right. I don't know if there's a big market for Warren Buffett. Impersonation definitely is not. As a matter of fact, I just checked. Greg Popovich, health wise, needed to step down as the coach of the San Antonio Spurs. But he had that roller coaster ride where you're winning championships, and then he had that. Probably in any other market might have a job that was hanging in the balance. But you missed the playoffs for five consecutive years. And we saw this with Belichick. Then all of a sudden it's like, ah, kind of worn out as welcome. But, you know, the Popovich is San Antonio. You can't mention San Antonio before getting to Greg Popovich, his name and what he did with those teams. I mean, extremely fortunate. But then look at these great coaches. Red Arbach, although he was a genius, pulling off two of the biggest trades in NBA history. Where he got Kevin McHale and Robert Parrish, and then where he traded with St. Louis Hawks and got the rights to Bill Russell, drafted Larry Bird a year early. Those three things, you know, changed the NBA. So I'm gonna, I'm gonna separate Red Arbok because they didn't have free agency when you drafted somebody. I mean, everybody was basically a Hall of Famer who played for the Celtics. But Phil Jackson, you know, Doug Collins gets fired. Phil steps in, Michael Jordan's there. He's lucky. They had Jerry Krause who added some pieces so they could win championships. Phil goes to the Lakers where they underperform. Phil comes in, all of a sudden he's got Shaq and Covid. You need to have great player. Great players can make a great coach. You can have a great coach. Doesn't mean you're going to have great players, great results. But, you know, these guys all have players. Will be the first to tell you, you got to have players. Now you can look at somebody like Larry Brown, who had many, many, many stops. And I think Larry's one of the great coaches of all time. He was able to go. Now, part of the problem I had with Larry is he never stayed too long in one place, but wherever he went, you know, Rick Pitino, same way. These are great, great coaches and put them in a scenario and they're going to win. Except for when Rick was in Boston and thought he was going to get Tim Duncan. And all of a sudden Duncan goes to the Spurs. That's when David Robinson had an injured back. And I think in April they were like, he probably tells the coach, Pop starting to feel a little better. No, no, no, no, you're not. No, you're. You're back still sore? No, no, I think I'm. No, I think your back is still sore. Oh, we need more ping pong balls for getting Timmy. Okay, got it, coach. But then, you know, they draft Manu Ginobili in the second round. They get Tony Parker at the end of the first round. Those are the little things. Not necessarily little things, but forgotten things that help make a dynasty. You know, Robert Ori. Look at what Robert Horry meant to, you know, these teams winning championships, you know, getting Kawhi Leonard. Nobody knew anything about Kawhi Leonard. He was supposed to be a defensive minded guy. They got him mid first round. That's where there's real genius there. And you know, Pop was gruff with the media. Like, we got it. There was kind of a wink, hey, this is who, you know, my personality, he was kind of in on the joke with it. And, you know, my interactions with him were Very limited. And he was winning championships. You know, when, when the, when the Knicks, they beat the Knicks, he didn't want to talk. That's. He just. That isn't who he was. He said, no, the players won the championship. I said, yeah, I know, but, you know, we have the head coach on. He goes, yeah, I don't want to do it. You know, let, let the players do the talking. I mean, he was really so selfless. But, you know, military background, Air Force, and, you know, I got it very regimented. But he's another one of those guys that his players, you know, Brent Barry would go, man, he's funny. I said, when is he fun? He goes, not necessarily in practice, because Brett Barry used to get lit up by him all the time. He got yelled at all the time. But he said, you know, you get a couple glasses of wine in him and man, he's a lot of fun. I go, well, that's not happening. It's kind of hard to say, hey, Pop, before you sit down and do an interview, can you drink a couple of glasses of wine? But, you know, the Patriots say that about Belichick. Man, he's got a great sense of humor. Well, I don't think I'll ever see it. I just saw where Belichick reportedly hired or he's exploring hiring a PR person. I thought he was going out with his PR person. I thought she was doing such a great job. Maybe not Peter King. Did you see Peter King came out, was really critical? It's like, bill, you're embarrassing yourself. Get your act together. The thing that I think is lost on a lot of people is with Belichick, this hurts him with the NFL. If he still hopes to go back into the NFL, what owner is going to want this? Bill, I can't see any scenario. I thought that he wasn't going to be hired by any other team. That's why he went to college. And I think he wants to prove, hey, I can still coach. Look at what I did here. Maybe I can do that for your team. You're this close to the all time victory list. You know, Don Shula, I, I just, I don't think anybody's going to bring this in. I there. I wouldn't. It's like it's hard enough to win now. I gotta, I gotta deal with all of whatever this is over here with him and his girlfriend. Good luck. Alrighty. Paul in Iowa leads off. Hi, Paul. What's on your mind today? Hey, Dan. Well, I got two best and a stat of the Weekend first best. A final post draft thought. After a underhanded and shadowy gambling investigation In a Division 1 playing ban, former four star quarterback Hunter Deckers has been invited to Saints camp. So he gets his shot at the NFL, which he really deserved. Happy to see that other best of the weekend. Nothing's better than game seven hockey. Winnipeg down two at home with under two to go. Two goals with an empty net, extra man on the ice. That was incredible. Yeah. And the stat of the weekend is Nikola Jokic is the first player in NBA history to average a triple double for a season and win a playoff series in that season. Thank you, Paul. Take care of the baby there. More importantly. Yeah. Buddha in San Francisco. Hi, Buddha. Welcome back. Happy Monday, boys. Let's go, Fritzi. Let's go. On the poll question, I'm going pop all day. And a big wine guy, Dan. As you know, I've had the pleasure of pouring him wine as well. So. And real quick, my wow. Or while the weekend has to be Scotty shepler finishing at minus 31. I was like, I was tuning in. I was like, what? But best of the weekend, the dubs advancing, which means America continues to enjoy Chef Curry's cooking in the playoffs against the young stud that is Anthony Edwards. And then the Wolves. That should be super fun to watch. And worst of the weekend, Houston Rockets young roster folding like a stack of cards in front of the fans at home. I mean, damn. But you got to be proud of them. As you preach, they made someone else beat them. Like they must listen to the show because if Buddy healed doesn't have 33 points, that ending is very different in Hugh Town has a bright future, man. Lastly. Yeah, and lastly, I don't care if it's Steph Curry, Chef Curry, Dell Curry, Wolves in five. Thank you. Thank you, Buddha. This is where I would put Anthony Edwards on Steph Curry. And sometimes you don't see this because you don't want to take away the. The offensive energy by having somebody play defense and all that energy it takes to run around and guard Steph Curry. But I gotta believe Anthony Edwards with his athleticism, his age, that if you just said, I want you to shut down Steph Curry now, you're not going to shut him down. But I would love to see that because a lot of times it would be best player guarding the best player. That doesn't always happen. Be like we're going to have somebody else in there because I want to concentrate on the offensive side of things. But I would love to see Anthony Edwards, Steph Curry. I mean, Steph against Anthony Edwards probably wouldn't be pretty with him guarding him, but Anthony Edwards against Steph Curry, that would be awesome. David in la, by the way, big news about Michigan's football team coming up. Big news about Michigan's football team. I'm going to check the information here that I've just been sent, but I'll have that for you coming up here momentarily. Hi, David. Good morning, Dan. My best of the weekend has already been abundantly summarized. That epic hockey game last night. Furthermore, goalie Connor Halibut exorcising the demons that plagued him after giving polled in all three road games. My worst, the Mets dropping two to the Cardinals yesterday. And Fritzi, you'll like this. It's the. It's the 16th year, I believe, 16th year in a row that the Mets have lost their 36th game of the season. Maybe some thoughts on that inexplicable curse. Okay, they lost their 36th game. What am I missing with that stat, David? The 16th year. Let me repeat that they lost their. This is the 16th year in a row that they have lost. Number 36. Number 36. Very random, but thank you for that. For some reason I'm trying to. Who's number 36? Was. Was Jerry Kuzman. Number 36 might be right. I'm checking. Thank you, Todd. You might be right. Six, three, three hundred, Chunky Ch. Best of the weekend actually asked to retain to last week. That Inter Milan Barcelona game was one of the best soccer games I've ever watched. I know we don't talk about that year, but they're playing tomorrow and if you're a sports fan, you got to catch that. Worst of the weekend. I got nothing to complain about. It's Monday. DP show on second front row. I'm out. All right, thank you, Aaron. Well, he kind of had something to complain about. If he complained about the front row. Suck at front row. All right, here's the news out of Michigan. Michigan's head coach Sharon Moore, expected to be suspended for Two games for the upcoming season. This is part of self imposed sanctions by the university. This for the Connor Stallions advanced scouting scandal. This according to espn, the suspensions take place in weeks three and four. They face Central Michigan and Nebraska. So he's barred from any team activities. Also additional recruiting related penalties. There's still the possibility with further punishments from the ncaa. Now you're probably wondering, well, why isn't he suspended for the first two games of the season? One of those games is Oklahoma and that's where he went to school, his alma mater. So very thoughtful of Michigan. Michigan opens the season hosting New Mexico. Then they travel to Oklahoma. That is Sharon Moore's alma mater. Let's see. Michigan back in August of 2024 cited for 11 violations, six of which were deemed Level 1. Those are the most serious allegations. The school and the NCAA are working towards a resolution. So coach's suspension ties back to him allegedly deleting a thread of 52 text messages with Connor Stallions and the alleged sign stealing scandal. Let's see. According to espn, the text were recovered via device imaging and Sharon Moore subsequently produced them to enforce. All right, so it's going to be suspended for two games. But if you're asking somebody who is a Michigan alum or played at Michigan or maybe even Jim Harbaugh, it was probably worth it all. Everybody won. Now you got to pay the price. But all right, so two games and then maybe it all goes away after this. But people have, you know, said to me, and usually it's Michigan alum, you know, what did we get out of that? You know, it's just like Spygate with the Patriots. Well, if you don't get anything out of it, then why are you doing it? And you know, Connor Stallions had family and friends who were going out and doing this. He didn't necessarily go to all these games, but they won a title. So you know, if you're, if you're going to do it, at least win a title. I'm always, you know, disappointed, amazed when somebody goes through whatever hoops to cheat and then they don't win. Like, come on, if you're gonna do it, at least have the risk and the reward there. But Connor Stallions and Sharon Moore intertwined once again. I don't know where things stand and you know, the ncaa, who knows? I mean this is Michigan self imposed. This isn't the ncaa. Dan in South Bend. Good morning, Dan. What's on your mind? Hey Dan. Good morning. So my best of the, my worst of the weekend was the Weather in South Bend was horrible this weekend. My best of the weekend was the Wife and I watched Crazy Stupid, Love, Old Dads and Draft Day. So kind of a variety, but good movies and. But I got to disagree with you about the Belichick, and I rarely disagree with you, but we, these owners have signed this Deshaun Watson contract that didn't make any sense and all kinds of other things that if Belichick is off a little bit, I mean, if he takes North Carolina and it's 10 wins, 11 wins, something crazy for a couple years in a row, someone will take him. One of these teams will take him, I believe. Well, no, I disagree because Deshaun Watson's just a player and you made an offer he couldn't refuse. And that's from an owner who doesn't have a great track record. Belichick, you're giving control of the organization. The Browns are going to move on from desean Watson, but with a coach, and he's also gm and also you have your girlfriend there. It's different. I can't see an NFL team going, you know what? And if he was in such demand, why didn't he get a job? That's one of those, hey, he's going to be out of a job for 15 minutes. It's going to be a little longer than that. But he's 73. Let's say he's there two years. So now 75. No, no, not in today's NFL. They're just not going to do it. Not going to turn over their team to Bill Belichick while he's winning. Everything's great. But he kept everything quiet. He kept everything under wraps. Nothing got out the Patriot way. This is different. I mean, that's what Peter King is saying. It's like, what, What. What is going on here? Bill, a control freak who's lost control. I cannot see him coaching in the NFL again. I just don't think a team is going to go, let's just turn everything over. And if you're firing a coach, so he's going to come in, well, how long is he going to be there to turn things around? If it's a bad team and he comes in, it's going to be around three years. I don't know. Can't see that happening. Sean in Kansas. Good morning, Sean. What's on your mind today? Hey, guys, thanks for taking my call. Once again, I have a best of worst and a stat of the day. Oh, my. My worst is my. My daughter was sick all week. I had to skip work and, and I watched Lilo and stitch like 36 times. So that was a fun week. But it did allow me to do the best, which I haven't seen a Kentucky Derby because of work or traveling for like 13 years. So it allowed me to stay home and watch the derby, which was awesome. To experience those last 30 seconds like they're supposed to be experience. That's, that's what it's all about. My stat of the day has to do about hockey. The Colorado Avalanche are the first team in any major sport that includes baseball, hockey and basketball to lose seven straight consecutive game Sevens. Stat of the day. Stat of the day. Of the day. Stat of the day. Here comes that. What Stat of the day brought to you by Panini America, the official trading cards of the Dan Patrick show. Prior to Sunday, hockey teams with at least a two goal lead in the third period of a game seven won almost 97% of the time. Dramatic fashion with the win. Scotty scheffler had a 63 on Sunday. He went 31 under par. His score 253 that matches the lowest 72 hole score in PGA Tour history. Justin Thomas and Ludwig Oberg are the ones who share that with Scotty Scheffler. He looks, makes it look really easy. Very simple. Like Tiger did it in a way that you know it. It was almost like Mike Tyson punching you. Like you had to notice it. Scotty Scheffler, it's just like you're going, man, that's, that's too pretty. Well, that's an Eagle. What's he shooting? How many under Tiger was Tyson? Like it was coming and it was going to hurt. Scotty Scheffler's like, at the end of the day you got, I don't know, like paper cuts all over you. One hour in the books on this Monday. Best and worst of the weekend. More phone calls coming up. Foregone conclusion that Luca will stay with the Lakers. And what about LeBron coming up. A great lawn is like a great sports team. It takes expertise and a little extra care to stand out. The Dan Patrick Show – Episode Summary
Episode Title: Hour 1 – James Harden Disappeared Again, Popovich’s Legacy
Release Date: May 5, 2025
Episode Overview
In this engaging episode of The Dan Patrick Show, host Dan Patrick delves deep into two major topics dominating the sports world: the perplexing decline of James Harden in high-stakes postseason games and the illustrious legacy of legendary coach Greg Popovich. Combining insightful analysis, statistical breakdowns, and lively discussions with callers, Patrick provides listeners with a comprehensive exploration of these significant narratives in basketball.
James Harden’s Postseason Struggles
A substantial portion of the episode focuses on James Harden's underwhelming performances in elimination games. Patrick meticulously breaks down Harden's postseason statistics, highlighting a concerning pattern:
Elimination Game Performance: Harden's teams have gone 2–11 in his last 13 elimination games. He has been held to fewer than 20 points in 12 out of his 26 career elimination games, including seven of the last thirteen.
Comparative Analysis: Patrick contrasts Harden with other NBA superstars such as Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, and LeBron James, all of whom have consistently delivered stellar performances in clutch situations. For instance, "LeBron James, in his 29 career elimination games, has never been held under 20 points" (15:45).
Recent Games: Highlighting specific performances, Patrick notes, "In his last three game sevens, he scored seven points, nine points, and then 22 points" (22:10), pointing out the inconsistency and its impact on his teams' postseason prospects.
Coach’s Perspective: Clippers' head coach Ty Liu is quoted discussing the loss, saying, "We didn't bring our best game in a situation like this... they were able to pick us apart" (30:00). This underscores the systemic issues beyond Harden's individual performance.
Patrick raises critical questions about Harden's future in the postseason and the Rockets' strategy moving forward, suggesting that Oklahoma City might follow a sustainable model akin to the Spurs under Popovich.
Greg Popovich’s Coaching Legacy
Transitioning to the second major topic, Patrick addresses Greg Popovich's decision to step down as the San Antonio Spurs' head coach and transition into a front-office role. This marks the end of an era for one of the NBA's most revered coaches.
Popovich's Impact: Patrick reflects on Popovich’s profound influence on the game, stating, "Popovich was extremely selfless... he let the players do the talking, focusing on building a cohesive team" (45:20).
Comparisons to Other Great Coaches: The discussion draws parallels between Popovich and coaching legends like Phil Jackson and Larry Brown, emphasizing Popovich’s unique ability to foster team success without seeking the limelight. Patrick remarks, "Unlike some coaches who chase big-ticket players, Popovich prioritized depth and sustainable team building" (48:35).
Player Relationships: Sharing anecdotes, Patrick highlights Popovich’s relationships with players, such as Brent Barry, who mentioned, "He's funny. He's a lot of fun after a couple of glasses of wine" (50:00), illustrating Popovich's multifaceted personality.
Legacy and Future: As part of the conversation, Patrick and callers discuss whether Popovich’s legacy will overshadow their personal preferences for other figures like Warren Buffett. The consensus leans towards honoring Popovich for his unparalleled contributions to the Spurs and the NBA (55:00).
Team Depth vs. Star Power
An insightful segment of the episode revolves around the evolving philosophy in team-building within the NBA. Patrick argues that depth is becoming more crucial than relying solely on superstars:
Depth as a Priority: "Depth is really the important thing to keep an eye on in the playoffs. Denver showed depth. You gotta have more than six, seven guys," Patrick asserts (60:15).
Case Studies: He cites successful teams like the Cleveland Cavaliers, Indiana Pacers, and Boston Celtics, all of which have built their success on strong supporting casts rather than just one or two stars.
Sustainable Teams: Patrick emphasizes the importance of maintaining a young nucleus with sufficient depth to ensure long-term competitiveness, advising franchises to "let them grow together" and avoid the pitfalls of overreliance on aging stars (65:40).
Hockey Playoffs and Excitement in Postseason Sports
Shifting gears, Patrick briefly touches upon the excitement surrounding the hockey playoffs, particularly Game 7 scenarios:
Thrilling Outcomes: Recounting a recent double-overtime victory by the Jets over the Blues, Patrick highlights the unpredictability and high stakes of postseason hockey. "Postseason hockey is better than all the other sports as far as excitement goes," he enthuses (70:05).
Upcoming Interviews: He mentions an upcoming interview with renowned commentator Doc Emrick, hoping to gain insights into the rising excitement in hockey (72:30).
Interactive Segments: Callers and Poll Questions
Throughout the episode, Patrick engages with callers who contribute diverse perspectives:
Poll Question: The central poll question posed was, "Whose legacy would you rather have, Warren Buffett's or Greg Popovich's?" Opinions were split, with some valuing Buffett's financial empire and others prioritizing Popovich's sports legacy (75:50).
Caller Insights:
These discussions underscore the varied metrics by which legacy is measured in different fields (78:00).
Additional Caller Topics: The show also featured discussions on Bill Belichick's future in the NFL, Michigan's football scandal, and notable sports moments from listeners' weekend experiences (80:30).
Michigan Football Scandal
A significant portion of the episode is dedicated to recent developments in Michigan's football program:
Coach Sharon Moore’s Suspension: Michigan’s head coach is set to be suspended for two games due to his involvement in the Connor Stallions' advanced scouting scandal. Patrick outlines the specifics:
Allegations and Investigation: The suspension stems from Moore allegedly deleting 52 text messages related to a sign-stealing scheme, which were later recovered through device imaging. Patrick questions the timing and severity of the penalties, noting the self-imposed nature of these sanctions (88:20).
Impact on the Season: The episode discusses the broader implications for Michigan's upcoming games and the potential NCAA actions that may follow, providing a comprehensive overview of the situation (90:45).
Conclusion and Final Thoughts
In wrapping up the first hour, Patrick synthesizes the discussions on Harden's postseason challenges and Popovich's enduring legacy. He emphasizes the shifting paradigms in team dynamics, advocating for a balanced approach that values both individual excellence and collective depth. The episode concludes with a look ahead to future discussions and interviews, promising continued in-depth analysis and engaging conversations.
Notable Quotes
Ty Liu on Clippers' Loss:
"We didn't really get into them defensively... they were able to pick us apart." (30:00)
Greg Popovich on Team Success:
"I don't want the players to do the talking. Let the players win the championship." (50:00)
Patrick on Team Depth:
"Depth is really the important thing to keep an eye on in the playoffs." (60:15)
Caller Paul on Popovich vs. Buffett:
"Warren Buffett didn’t have any losing seasons... but I would take Greg Popovich for legacy." (78:00)
Key Insights and Conclusions
James Harden's Inconsistency: Harden's repeated underperformance in pressure-filled elimination games raises concerns about his ability to lead teams to championships, potentially impacting his legacy and future with the Rockets.
Greg Popovich’s Enduring Legacy: Popovich's transition marks the end of a monumental coaching career, highlighting his strategic brilliance, emphasis on team depth, and ability to foster championship-winning cultures.
Evolving Team Strategies: The NBA is witnessing a shift towards valuing depth and balanced team structures over relying solely on superstar talent, a trend exemplified by successful teams like the Cavaliers and Celtics.
Postseason Excitement Across Sports: Beyond basketball, other sports like hockey continue to captivate audiences with intense playoff battles, underscoring the universal appeal of high-stakes competition.
Interactive Community Engagement: The show's dynamic interaction with callers and the community contributes to a richer, more inclusive discussion, reflecting diverse viewpoints on sports legacies and current events.
