Not official yet, but it looks like John Harbaugh will be the next head coach of the New York Football Giants. Come on in. Stay a while, Fritz. He's here. When I count my blessings, I count my blessings with Todd twice. Wow. Seaton's here, Marv's here, Paulie, yours truly and of course the back room. And my source told me when all of these firings happen, it was one guy is going to take the Giants job, one guy is going to take the Falcons job and the other guy was Kevin Stefanski. Now we've had a lot more turnover since then. You obviously have the Steelers situation, but Kevin Stefanski might end up with the Falcons, but John Harbaugh is going to the New York Football Giants. There's eight openings right now in the NFL. Other news, the Oregon quarterback Dante Moore is going to stay for another year. And I agree with this decision. I think this is a very smart, astute decision by him. Now you're probably saying, well, wait a minute, he could get $40 million going to the Jets. He could. And then be a backup quarterback in three years. He's only 20 years of age, he needs more starts. As I've told you, only because, you know, an NFL scout told me I gotta have at least 30 starts for quarterbacks. And look at all the decisions that have been made recently in drafts where you're drafting somebody who had a really good year and that's all they played. You got to get at least 30 starts. Dante Moore goes back to Oregon and he'll get paid well, get compensated and yes. Is he passing up being the number two quarterback in the draft? Probably so. And when he comes out the following year, maybe he's a late first round pick, but he might be going to a better team and having more reps in college. I, I think it's, it's not being short sighted. And being short sighted would be I'm just going to go into the NFL at age 20 and go to the Jets. That's a recipe for disaster. And in my opinion, him going back to Oregon, play another year, yet a terrible playoff game and go back there and clean those things up. And I think it's very smart decision on his part. Dylan Raiola was leaving Nebraska, go to Oregon, which really made things a lot more interesting because he's probably thinking, all right, let me get out of here, I'll go to Oregon, make some coin and then I'll go to the NFL. Now all of a sudden it's wait a, wait a minute, what happened? What did he know and when did he know it? Because this was a highly thought of quarterback coming out of high school, never lived up to the billing. He was the second coming of Patrick Mahomes, only in how he presented himself. But now you go to Oregon and you're going to be a backup quarterback to Dante Moore. Yes, we do. An early poll question. Would you rather be a starter at Nebraska or a backup at Oregon? Wow, that is five minutes in. Means spirited. Hey, it's not Me, I'm just, those are facts. That's verbatim what just happened. That's literally what. Yeah, but he just chose. The guy who's going to benefit is Alabama's quarterback, Ty Simpson. He's going to be the one that probably is going to be a top 15 pick now. And I don't know if he's a first round draft pick. He showed signs. There were, I thought, man, this guy is smooth. I, I, I need to see more reps, man. What did he have one season at Alabama where he started? I think he played in some games the previous year, but you know, that's where you go. Would Pittsburgh start their search for a new quarterback? What do they have the 13th pick in the draft. They would take Ty Simpson. Yeah. See, this is great news for Ty Simpson. It's terrible news for an NFL coach who doesn't know he's about to be fired next year. Wow. Yeah. Paul, the Steelers had the 21st pick of the draft and the situation with Dante Moore. According to CBS Sports, Dylan Riola offered to Red Shirt if he came back. So he was aware there was a possibility that Moore would come back when he committed to Oregon. Okay. Yeah, I think I'd rather go where I'm going to start, not where I'm going to Red shirt or be a backup. But Oregon's a great landing spot. He's going to get paid there. But now you sit. Yeah. Paul, I think Raiola may be making a great long term play if he sits this year, gets his, you know what Together has one great year at Oregon. Bo Nix parlayed that into a first round draft pick when he left Auburn. It was not going well and Dante Moore, he's could have been the number two pick. So I think long term, great move. All right, we'll come up with a poll question here. 8-77-3, DP show email address dp danpatrick.com Twitter handle DP Show Ian O' Connor of the Athletic said in a meeting with John Harbaugh's camp, not in person. John Mara, Chris Mara, Tim McDonald. This is the Giants front office. Money would not be an issue. The Giants obviously knew Harbaugh was around 18 million in Baltimore and expecting this final number with the Giants to be around $20 million for five years. Yeah, I'm not surprised at that. That would be the going rate. I think that those numbers were out there, that he wanted 20 million, he wanted 10 million for his staff. He wanted total control. But the reports I'm seeing, they're going to Keep Joe Shane, the general manager that John Harbaugh met with Shane and had a nice meeting with him as his general manager. All right, so we'll get to your phone calls. Coming up, the Steelers owner addressed the Mike Tomlin departure. Art Rooney II talked about Mike Tomlin and was it his choice to step down? Well, it was his decision. And, you know, I, I will say that I wasn't shocked, but I wasn't expecting that conversation yesterday either. So, you know, there were, you know, when you get to this stage of a career, obviously he even mentioned it himself that he was nearer to the end than the beginning. And so, as I said, I can't say that I was shocked. Yeah. But he also framed this in a way that. Was he surprised at this? Yes, he was. So that's why I don't think that he was forced out. I think Mike Tomlin realized that maybe he had taken this team as far as he could take them. John Harbaugh didn't realize that ownership told him to realize that he had taken the team as far as he could take them. Then there's this question to Art Rooney II about was there a possibility of Tomlin coming back? Would you have been willing to give Mike the extension on his contract for 2027 in March and did he ask for that? No, I'm not going to get into his contract at this point. We certainly. I was certainly willing to, you know, take another run at it next year with Mike and. And, you know, that's what I was expecting to talk about yesterday, but obviously went in a different direction. Yeah, I truly believe Mike Tomlin realized that it was time to go and him and John Harbaugh about the same timeline. The, you know, Baltimore Ravens approach was far different. They were firing John Harbaugh. The Steelers now have to replace Mike Tomlin because Mike Tomlin decided that he didn't want to coach there anymore. The betting lines for this weekend, the bills are getting one and a half at Denver. The 49ers yesterday they were getting seven and a half. Now they're getting seven in Seattle, Texans getting three in New England, and the Rams are giving three and a half against the Bears. National title game hasn't changed. Did change yesterday from 7 and a half to 8 and a half for Miami against Indiana and over under 47 and a half. This according to DraftKings. I also had the number one pick odds for the NFL. Fernando Mendoza is minus 8,000. Trinidad Shamlis is second at plus 3,000 and then Reuben Bain Jr III at plus 6,000. Fernando Mendoza and the Raiders are on the clock for the NFL draft that will be in Pittsburgh. We will be there for that as well. Yeah. These other openings, I do credit the Giants. They knew who they wanted. My source said when he was fired, immediately sent me a note saying he'll be number one on the Giants list. Now, the Giants interviewed him and then he went to Atlanta and then came back and interviewed again. And I think the Giants realized we're not going to let him out of the building, not without, you know, cementing him as our next head coach. Now, I'll go back to what I said to you. My source said it's either the Falcons or the Giants for John Harbaugh. He liked what he saw with the Falcons from what I'm told. But was he using the Falcons as maybe a negotiating ploy to get a better deal with the Giants? I don't know that, but I did. I was told it was either going to be Atlanta or is going to be the New York Giants. Now, you got Kevin Stefanski out there. I have not heard anything after that press conference yesterday about Mike Tomlin maybe interested in any of these other coaching jobs. Obviously, the Ravens job is a great job because that's where you go in and you have to win right now. You're expected to win right now. The Steelers, I know they don't like saying rebuilding, but they're not reloading. It certainly feels like a rebuild. And I would think anything would be on the table. And that is, you're going to T.J. watt, Jalen Ramsey. Well, they just got D.K. metcalf, calf. They. They were aggressive. And, you know, I thought at the beginning of the year that this would be the last year for Tomlin and the last year for Aaron Rodgers. It may not be the last year for Rogers playing, but it's the last year for him in Pittsburgh. The question is, does somebody want to sign him? And even ownership yesterday said that Aaron Rodgers, that was Mike Tomlin's decision to bring him in. So that sounds like whoever is coming in moving on from Aaron Rodgers and they need to, because you can't stay in that 9 and 8 area. Maybe 10 and 7. I mean, it's nice to be there, but you're just kind of. You're in it, but you're not. It's like you're in the pool, but you're not in the deep end. You're not threatening. And that can be no man's land. Hey, we got in the playoffs. How'd you do? Oh, we lost in the first round again, it's can we get bad enough to get better than just we got into the playoffs? Now we're threatening. And that'll be the key for the Steelers moving forward. And I wonder, yes, they've gone defense as their head coaches with Chuck Noel, Bill Cower, Mike Tomlin. Do they evolve into today's NFL because Mike Tomlin's 19 years ago. The league has changed. You got to have an offensive mind. There's now maybe you get a great offensive coordinator, but if your head coach is offensive leaning, that's sort of the trend that's going on now. And the question is, and, and from what I was told, the Steelers were monitoring what was going on in Green bay with Matt LaFleur. If Matt LaFleur was let go or they're not going to, you know, keep him in the building, give him a contract extension. The Steelers thought that they would be in the mix with Matt LaFleur. Ravens may have thought the same thing as well. So these coaches are in were in positions where people would covet those jobs. And then you pack up two guys who are hall of Famers and they. Now you have coaching vacancies, especially with Baltimore. But that one's tricky because you got to walk in. You got to embrace Lamar Jackson. You got to figure that out. And you got a roster that's ready to win in a division that is suspect right now. Any other poll questions there, Seaton? Yeah, yeah, we got a couple poll questions here. I'll give you early results. I would rather be a starter at Nebraska or backup at Oregon. 75 would rather start at Nebraska. Let's go Nebraska. Yes, of course you would. Dealing with this disrespect. Yes, yes. Not dealing with that crap. We also put up one here from Paul. Is John Harbaugh in a better football situation now than he was a month ago? All right, yes or no are your options there? I'll save my answer until after the break. Anything else you got? Those are the two we're going with right now. Okay, fair enough. I got an incredible stat of a player who will not be playing in a playoff game this weekend because he's injured. An incredible, incredible stat. I'll have that for you coming up. All right, we'll take a break. Just getting started. Hour one on this Thursday, Dan and the Danettes. Dan Patrick Show. College Football Transfer Portal closes Tomorrow NCAA announced that the transfer portal for college basketball will start after the national title game. These are just obvious things, just common sense and, and granted they have to do it in piecemeal, like just little things. There's no complete makeover with college athletics there and I don't want it to be. I want them to kind of go, okay, there's a fire over there. Let's put that out. There's a fire over there. Put that out. They can't solve everything at the same time. But the transfer portal, you know, it was Danny Hurley was telling us during the tournament. He now you're navigating the transfer portal. Who's coming in and who's leaving from your team and you're in the postseason. Didn't anybody think that that might be kind of conflicting? You know, even with when coaches can leave and the transfer portal. With college football and the playoffs, can we do 16 teams? No, we're going to do 24. No, we're not going to do 24. Let's do 12. All right, like once Again, you're just trying to get little victories here. That's what you want. Common sense. After the national title game, then you can go in the transfer portal. How about you can only transfer once without penalty? How about that? I love the fact that you have players who can go, I'm not going to play here. I can go and transfer and play there right away. Keep in mind, you used to have to sit out a year and if you transferred within your conference, you had to sit out two years. Now you have too much freedom with it. In. In my opinion, nil. Pay them whatever you want to pay them. You know you have a value and you know it's an open marketplace. But as far as transferring, there's a quarterback who I think is on going to be on his sixth team in six years. You, you shouldn't have that. Like you have to have some kind of regulations, rules in place, common sense in place of doing, you know, all of this. So they're going to change the transfer portal. Maybe they figure out how you can keep a coach in the playoffs before the transfer portal. And I'll go back and say what I've said many times on this show. You're transferring, you're all over the place. I haven't heard one player be academically ineligible through all of this. So I don't even know if you're going to school. I don't know if it matters anymore. And if it doesn't, then great, just tell us. That's all right. I mean, whatever your rules are. I thought college was for college, but maybe it's not. Yes, Marvin, the quarterback you just mentioned. The six teams doesn't bother me. The six years bothers me. Get a job. His job is to be a college quarterback. Here. I told you I had an incredible stat that has to do with the playoffs this weekend. George Kittle is out towards Achilles. When Brock Purdy targets George Kittle this season, regular season in playoffs, Brock Purdy completes over 80% of his passes. He averages nine over nine yards per attempt. He has five touchdowns and zero interceptions. His passer rating is 138. When Brock Purdy targets everyone else, he completes just under 70% of his passes. The average yards per attempt is 7.8. He threw 17 touchdowns, 12 interceptions. Passer rating of 95. Stat of the day, brought to you by Panini America, the official trading cards of the program. So it's a big loss. I think when we think of the Niners, you think of Christian McCaffrey and you probably think of Brock Purdy. But George Kittle has been a constant and to not have that kind of outlet, security blanket obviously is a huge loss going into Seattle. All right, we'll get to phone calls coming up. The interesting situation yesterday with Dante Moore going back to Oregon. Dylan Raiola was at Nebraska, highly coveted quarterback going to Nebraska. So now he's going to maybe red shirt at Oregon. Maybe he plays two years. I don't know if he did anything at Nebraska to really distinguish himself that. Oh my gosh, look at that now. Dante Moore, I got to see a couple of full games this year and he did show promise. But you know, you kind of had that choppy career at ucla. You go to Oregon and. And that Oregon offense can make a lot of people look a lot better than maybe what they really are. I want to see what he does now when defenses get a year, a season of tape on him and now what does he do against that competition? He needs more starts and maybe turns out to be the number one pick next year. Although he's going to be in a class with Arch Manning as well. But I thought it was a very smart decision. Do not take the quick money and go to the Jets. Because if you go to the jets and you're a young kid, not even 21, and you're thrown into that mess and it is a mess, then I wonder what, Just like Sam Darnold, you know, these quarterbacks who go there all of a sudden and look, I. Zach Wilson should never have been taken where he was taken. He played one good season and all of a sudden everybody fell in love with his pro day. I need to have more than that. Yes, Mark. The jets still might have the number two pick going into next year's draft of 2027. So he still might go to the Jets. It might be the number one pick in the draft. Yeah, Paul. It's so wild though that Dante Moore 10 years ago would have to go. He wouldn't consider staying. Let's say Dante Moore hypothetically is making $4 million next year. That's life changing money. He's set for life either way and he could wait and find a better situation and not an option 10 years ago. Yeah, I think it's an important part when you look at the role that nil is playing. These guys, they're going to make money and rightfully so. They're going to make money. And you might have players who want to stay longer, like you had shambles who wanted to play another year at Ole Miss. He still is fighting to play another year in College. And he might be the second quarterback taken in this draft. Yes. I mean, it's a good thing that NIL has allowed people like players like Dante Moore to stay rather than push them to the NFL too soon, right? Yeah. Yeah. I mean, that's kind of what you. You don't want underdeveloped players jumping too early. And plus, I know he's. He's expected to be the number two overall pick, but the bottom could fall out of that at any time between now and the draft that. We see that happen all the time. Geno Smith was supposed to go number one overall, and that did not work out leading up to draft night. Like, you're going. He could go number one. Yeah, he. He might go number one. And then all of a sudden, he's not even going to go in the first round. Will Levis, once again, it's dangerous when we have an opinion about somebody before the guys who do their job to analyze these players come in, because, you know, we get it in our mind, and it's like, oh, my God, that guy is gonna go top five. Remember when Dion joined us in New Orleans, he started talking about Shador and, you know, hey, there's. There's teams I don't want him to go to. And, you know, we're thinking, is he going to be a top five pick overall? And then all of a sudden, he was not going to be a top five. Top five rounds, maybe. But we fall in love, or we're told to fall in love. And there's certain people we have on the show. Orlovsky, Chris Sims. Right. I trust them. Chris Sims is really good at that. What do you see? What do you not see? I remember Orlovsky telling me about Will Levis. He said, I don't like his arm motion. Like, little things that we don't see. By the way, we got to be careful when we, you know, speak up about our football knowledge. This happened at a press conference with the Denver Bronco. Goes where Sean Payton was, well, talking to a reporter. How big is that in the timing of it? Do you want him to attack downhill? Is that your. Like, what do you know about attacking downhill in the run game? You don't know. All right. That's right. Have him attacking downhill. It's good to have a healthy Dre Greenlaw back in the game. Okay. Sean could have handled it a little bit better than that. But when we have knowledge or we think we have knowledge, and then we recite that knowledge to somebody who is in a, you know, a elite Fraternity. Hey, you know Drake Greenlaw running downhill. Now, would I phrase it that way? No, I would not. I would not. I still don't know what running downhill means. But, Coach, are you planning to take the top off of the defense this weekend? What do you know about taking the top off of the defense? I don't know. Yeah, Paul, I purposely didn't listen to that cut until you just played it. My first thought was I first thought the reporter used the phrase attack downhill incorrectly because it's usually running backs run downhill. I just Googled it. It is a defensive phrase that's been used for the past couple years, and it's relatively new. Attack downhill. Linebacker is a middle linebacker that goes in to make stops. That is clearly a football guy saying. You can't use football guy terminology. We can use football guy. Absolutely. Absolutely. I'll go back to what happened to me at the NBA Finals with the New York Knicks and Pat Riley. I asked, oh, God, that was. That was an embarrassing situation. As I had information and I had information to ask Pat Riley a question. Jack Ramsey, one of the great basketball minds of all time, worked with me on SportsCenter. I said, Jack, give me a question for Riley that he will answer. Give me a basketball question. So he gave me a detailed basketball question. I remember it's quiet. There's a scrum around Pat Riley. It's an off day in the NBA Finals. I said, coach. And then I recited the question. He didn't answer me. The silence. He didn't answer me. Next. Yeah, next question. He just looked around. He looked. He looked around. The next thing I knew, and I was kind of established, you know, covering the NBA Finals here. And the next thing I knew, I went over to Jack Ramsey, and Jack said, what did he say, Dan? I said, he didn't say anything. He didn't say anything. I go, no, he didn't say anything. Next thing I know, Nick's PR comes over and says, you guys have to leave that we couldn't be on the floor. I was hoping Jack would be able to watch practice. And I said to the PR person, hey. Said, hey, hey, Jack can stay. I'll go in the back and get ready to do our Sports center hit. He goes, no, coach doesn't want anybody in here. You got your answer? I did, yes. What did he say? What did he say, Dan? I go, he didn't say anything. He didn't say anything. I go, no, because I was trying to give him some basketball questions there. Bill Parcells would do that to you. Oh, was it painful. Now, I never asked Parcels a question because he couldn't wait to tell you what you didn't know. And we get a couple of phone calls. Oh, by the way, so would you phrase the question there, Seaton, with John Harbaugh. Oh, yeah, the poll question. Yeah. Is John Harbaugh. Harbaugh in a better football situation now than he was a month ago? Yes or no. So football situation. Yes, a better football situation. I'm going to say yes. Yes, I am. He's not beholden to one player. Now it's a great player. But now he's got a quarterback on a rookie deal, running back, rookie deal, wide receiver on a rookie deal. Now you're coming in now make us relevant. So he's got a two year kind of grace period, honeymoon period. And maybe, you know, if the Eagles start to slip a little bit more, maybe Washington isn't as good. Dallas will be. Dallas, you got the fifth pick in the draft. Maybe you got a chance to kind of show people what you can do. Because I think the success of the Ravens felt like it was attached to Lamar Jackson. The failure of the Ravens was attached to John Harbaugh. Now with the Giants, you know, he's probably going to have total autonomy here and he's going to be able to pick his staff and maybe not have it solely based on I'm relying on one player and if that guy plays well, we're going to be in the playoffs. If he doesn't, then we're not. Yes. If I'm. I could be mistaken, but the team John Harbaugh just joined was eliminated from the playoff. From playoff contention November 23, week 12. It's the exact same roster that he currently has right now. They were the first team knocked out of playoff contention. Yeah, but Malik Neighbors got hurt. Scatter Boo got hurt as well. Jackson Dart was banged up as well. Which all could happen again next year. True. Hopefully not, but likely they're going to have injuries again next year. Yeah, but not season ending injury. That you would think unless they. Maybe they changed the turf at MetLife. But yeah, I think it's a great situation for him. You know, sometimes who you worked for, you know, it become. It's just. Just like espn. Those four letters are so powerful. When I was there, you want to kind of differentiate yourself from that. See if you can do it on your own. You're with a great organization in the Ravens always in playoff contention. Super bowl mvp. Now you go to the Giants. You know, a one storied franchise. Now you breathe Some life into it. They. They wanted you. They really wanted you. There was no doubt they were not going to let you take another job. And I think with John Harbaugh, that's probably, you know, a welcome relief of they do want me. Now I go in and he just feels like he's a New York Giants head coach. He looks like he'll be a New York Giant head coach. Yeah, Paul. And doesn't it feel like the New York Giants, even the media, may give him a little room to breathe. In the past nine years, they've made one playoff and had one winning season. That season was nine wins. They squeaked into the playoffs. Otherwise, they would have one playoff appearance in the past 14 years. Tom in North Carolina. Hi, Tom. What's on your mind? Hey, D.P. yeah. Piggyback on what you guys are talking about with John. John Harbaugh. I'm a Giants fan. I'm not so optimistic about what you guys are saying because you got your defensive coordinator leaving the Ravens and possibly taking Sam Donald to the super bowl, and John Harbaugh can't take Derek Henry and Lamar Jackson deep in the playoffs. Hey, you know, give Mike McDonald credit. He did a wonderful job there in Seattle. He has. And I've said before about John Harbaugh, I like John. I don't know if he's putting my team over the top. I don't know if Mike Tomlin is going to put my team over the top. Because you didn't do it with your teams. I don't think he's a savior. There are very, very few of those guys where you go, man, turn it over to that guy. I sounded like Gruden a little bit, man. This guy. That guy could just coach. He's not a savior either. Yes, Todd. So what should reasonable expectations be? If you're a Giants fan and John Harbaugh is coming, what would be considered in the next three, four, five years? That was our guy. I'm so glad we grabbed him. How about over under seven wins next season. Oh, that's it. Wow. Yeah. Okay. Anybody? That feels like a huge upgrade. Yes. That feels like. Wow. You really turned this around. Coach of the year candidate. All right, over. Under seven. Sheesh. Who's going over? Well, then you got to go to eight because you can't go to seven and a half, Todd. You know that is true. So if I said six and a half, I think he'll get them. Over six and a half wins. Okay. I'm talking about bigger picture. Like, does he gotta get. Oh, no, you got a Super bowl in three, four. No, this is what. This is all incremental. You gotta build it. They're like they're going to super bowl four years or else. What? Why did everybody get so excited about John Harbon? It's been four years and they got to play the NFC west next year. So you're going to go against the Rams in Seattle and the Niners next year and Arizona. Yes. The Giants have had like six or seven head coaches in the last 10 years. So if he can actually make it to year three, that's a massive win for the franchise that they actually catch. So that'll be the biggest win. If he could stay, if he could last three and a half seasons in New York, that would over under three and a half. It's a five year deal. Three and a half years for John Harbaugh with the Giants. We were just checking our numbers. Is this Gentleman's name is TJ Finley. He was a recruit back in like 2018, 19. And he started at LSU, then to Auburn, then to Texas State, Tulane, Western Kentucky, Georgia State and now Incarnate Word. Just to recap. Six, six, seven. Yes, six. He received two extra years of eligibility due to playing his freshman season. 2020 with the COVID year and then he had a red shirt year. I don't know where the seventh year comes from. It's like Riggins on that show Friday Night Lights. Yeah, he was in high school for six years. I could never figure it out. Chris in Syracuse. Hi Chris. What's on your mind? Hey, thanks, Dan. Yeah, a couple things on the coaching carousel. Yeah. If John Harbaugh is the Giants next head coach. Good hire. Finally they get a proven coach, not a Pat Shermer, Joe Judge, Brian Dable. They're kind of back to a time Coughlin and also during the season and since it ended for the packers, they keep saying they're going to get an extension done with their current head coach, Matt Leflore, but still nothing. And I wonder if the packers are going to be the new ninth team looking for a head coach. And unfortunately, as a Viking fan, I think my Vikes are going to be looking for a new defensive coordinator because I think Brian Flores is going to land one of the open head coaching jobs and. And maybe with the usually defensive minded Steelers. But it's long overdue for Flores, who's been somewhat blackballed by the NFL after how things went down in Miami. Yeah, he's earned a and deserves another shot. And whether it's in Pittsburgh or someplace else, I think he'll do well. Yeah. And I think he's in his mid-40s there. I thought, you know, I saw his name attached to the Raiders, but I don't have any information on that. Sean in Tulsa. Hi, Sean. What's on your mind? Good morning, Dan. Second time, long time. There was a lot of talk, a lot of chatter a couple of months ago regarding Bill Belichick and just wondering what your thoughts on him getting back into the league with all these coacho getting fouled. No, no, no. I think that ship sailed. It's just too much baggage that comes with that. You know, I thought he was getting the Atlanta job. And, you know, I think Arthur Blank held his front office accountable for. Okay, you don't want me to hire Bill Belichick. All right, you guys better be right. And they weren't. But, you know, he's 74 and does age factor in? Yeah, at some point. I mean, and it's not personal with Belichick. But you're bringing in his girlfriend. It hasn't gone well at North Carolina. It didn't go well towards the tail end in New England. You know, somebody who worked there said Bill just felt seemed distracted. He wasn't Belichick now, if he's 66 years of age. Yeah, you know, but I would have hired him in Atlanta. I said that I would have hired him. But, you know, not now. Too much. Too much going on. Yes. You know how like with John Harbaugh right now they're saying, well, they're just like working out the details of the contract. But it's basically saying, I wonder if the details for Bill Belichick when he's signing there is like, now we got the money taken care of. We've got all of my control. We've got all of these things. Now my girlfriend, what can we do for her? What role? Yes, what role can we have for my girlfriend? Yeah, she doesn't look good in these colors. Can we change the colors of the pink color? Rush, she prefers a. She looks great in green. More of a muted matte. She loves green. Gary in San Antonio. Hi, Gary. What's on your mind? Hey, dan called San Antonio 58175. I had a off the wall thing I was thinking about. I watched the Golden Globes the other night, and I was thinking about when people win Golden Globes or Emmys or Oscars or whatnot, how it changes an actor's life. My question is, what would a sports Emmy do for each one of the Danettes? You know, would it change their trajectory, change their endeavors they're going to dive into after the show is no longer with us? No, it's not changing anybody. Although I'll let Them answer. Sports Emmy didn't change my life. I, I mean, I appreciated being, you know, awarded, rewarded, but it didn't change anything. Yes, Marvin, like when people win Oscars, you don't become a movie star after you win the Oscar. A lot of people are already movie stars when they win the Oscar or you're Frances McDormand where you're a great actress, but. But you're not on the poster of an upcoming blockbuster film. Seaton. I don't know that it would change my life, but for me personally, I take a lot of pride in being one of the people that built this show from the attic all the way up to winning a sports Emmy. That's what it means to me. We sat there putting together chairs. We were fending off cats. It was not like we stepped into a multimillion dollar studio. We pieced it together like Legos. And that is I. That to me, is why I want it so much. Yes, Todd. I would have to be referred to at least for a couple of weeks or months as Emmy award winning Todd Fritz. And then eventually I'd get over it. I probably walk the streets with my, my trophy for a little while and then. And then put it away. Paul. It'd be a very cool night. I think more so that we've been nominated a bunch of times made me feel really good. Not a one nomination, but like five or six. I think. Yeah. I feel better that we've been nominated for six years. I think, like, I don't feel as bad that we lose. I'd feel worse if we didn't get nominated. One hour in the books. We're not going to win a sports Emmy, though, so not likely. No, probably not. No. I'll, I'll Larry Bird hand in the air. Guarantee it. You're guaranteeing we win a sports again? It could be after we're off the air. No, no, no. I don't want one of those silly things. But that's counts as a win. No. Nope. I'm not counting that. Well, we're not getting that. You are. Yeah, I am. Dan will get it. And then. Yes. Yes. And that's it. Hour one on this Thursday. This is an I heart podcast. Guaranteed human.
On this episode, Dan Patrick and the Danettes dive into breaking news and major storylines in the NFL and college football. The show focuses on two lead stories: John Harbaugh reportedly finalizing a deal to become the next head coach of the New York Giants, and Oregon quarterback Dante Moore’s decision to remain in school instead of entering the NFL Draft. They also address the ongoing NFL coaching carousel, transfer portal chaos in college sports, and discuss the evolving value of NIL for college athletes. As always, the crew injects humor and perspective, with listener calls and lively exchanges.
Deal Nearly Finalized
Dan opens with breaking news: John Harbaugh is expected to become the Giants’ next head coach.
“...Not official yet, but it looks like John Harbaugh will be the next head coach of the New York Football Giants.” (02:05)
Harbaugh’s Demands & Giants’ Commitment
The Giants reportedly prepared to meet Harbaugh’s salary ($20M/year for 5 years) and give him control over staff and football operations.
“He wanted $20 million, he wanted $10 million for his staff. He wanted total control. But the reports I’m seeing, they’re going to keep Joe Shane, the general manager. John Harbaugh met with Shane and had a nice meeting...” (15:32)
Why the Giants Moved Aggressively
Insights from Dan’s sources:
“My source said when he was fired, immediately sent me a note saying he’ll be number one on the Giants list...I think the Giants realized we’re not going to let him out of the building, not without cementing him as our next head coach.” (39:15)
Was Atlanta Used as Leverage?
Harbaugh was also linked to Atlanta but seemed to favor New York, possibly leveraging one offer against another (39:45).
Poll Question:
Giants Fan Callers & Realistic Expectations
“How about over under seven wins next season...Anybody? That feels like a huge upgrade. That feels like, wow.” (01:18:30)
“I like John. I don’t know if he’s putting my team over the top. I don’t know if Mike Tomlin is going to put my team over the top. Because you didn’t do it with your teams." (01:16:08)
Moore’s Draft Potential and Development
Dan supports Moore’s decision to return to Oregon rather than declare for the NFL draft, emphasizing the need for more collegiate starts.
“He could get $40 million going to the Jets...He’s only 20 years of age, he needs more starts. As I’ve told you, only because, you know, an NFL scout told me I gotta have at least 30 starts for quarterbacks...” (06:09)
NIL's New Reality
Moore can stay in college, develop, AND earn life-changing money:
“That’s life-changing money. He’s set for life either way and he could wait and find a better situation and not an option 10 years ago.” (01:03:14)
Dylan Raiola’s Surprise & The Transfer Portal
"If he sits this year, gets his, you know what together, has one great year at Oregon... long term, great move." (11:13)
Impact on Other Quarterbacks
Alabama's Ty Simpson may benefit the most, rising in draft stock as others stay in school (09:03).
Poll Question:
Mike Tomlin’s Departure from Pittsburgh
“I truly believe Mike Tomlin realized that it was time to go and him and John Harbaugh about the same timeline. The...Baltimore Ravens approach was far different. They were firing John Harbaugh. The Steelers now have to replace Mike Tomlin because Mike Tomlin decided...” (20:28)
Future of Steelers and Head Coaching Trends
Belichick’s Coaching Future
Dan and callers agree that Bill Belichick’s return to coaching is unlikely:
“No, no, no. I think that ship sailed. It’s just too much baggage that comes with that...” (01:35:04)
Transfer Portal “Commonsense” Tweaks
Dan argues for reasonable restrictions, such as allowing only one penalty-free transfer:
“How about you can only transfer once without penalty?...Now you have too much freedom with it.” (53:13)
Academics in College Football?
Dan wonders about the absent academic discussion amid widespread transfers:
“I haven’t heard one player be academically ineligible through all of this. So I don’t even know if you’re going to school. I don’t know if it matters anymore.” (54:28)
Brock Purdy’s Dependency on George Kittle (Niners)
The Globe-Trotting QB
Classic “Football Guy” Terminology Moment
Dan on Harbaugh to Giants:
“I think it’s a great situation for him. ...Now you breathe some life into it. They wanted you. They really wanted you.” (01:11:32)
On Dante Moore’s patience:
“I think it’s very smart decision. Do not take the quick money and go to the Jets. Because if you go to the jets...you’re thrown into that mess, and it is a mess..." (01:01:28)
On the perils of hype and draft analysis:
“We fall in love, or we’re told to fall in love...Before the guys who do their job to analyze these players come in...” (01:05:42)
On Transfer Chaos:
“There’s a quarterback who I think is going to be on his sixth team in six years. You shouldn’t have that...you have to have some kind of regulations…” (53:47)
Dan and crew keep a lively, witty, and occasionally self-deprecating tone, balancing insider information with relatable, big-picture fan perspective. There’s a signature blend of banter (especially when debating poll questions), honest takes on sports business, and organic transitions to listener engagement.
