It's hour one on this Tuesday. Dan and the Dan Dan Patrick Show. Fritzy is on fire today. From the beginning. Soon as I walked in the door, Fritzy says, I got a song for you. And I said, all right. And I thought it was, you know, when somebody says, hey, I got a song for you to listen. He goes, no, I got a song. I go, wait, you're going to sing another song? He goes, yep. And then I walked down the hall. He was practicing his song, by the way. You tell us what it's about.
Tom Brokaw
It is about a week, two weeks too late. But it came to me like four in the morning. Once again, one of those middle of the night things. It's a song about Terry Bradshaw not loving Aaron Rodgers coming to the Steelers to the 1984 because I live in the 80s. The Steve Perry song oh Sherry, which was a very popular hit in the 80s. This is oh, Terry.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Tom Brokaw
Basically on Terry Bradshaw is not being pleased with the whole Aaron Rodgers thing and how that played out.
Dan Patrick
Okay, we'll get to that coming up.
Tom Brokaw
If the previous song went so well, another one.
Dan Patrick
That's the point. It didn't go well the last song. You did well.
Tom Brokaw
It's everybody's fault because I didn't learn my lesson and you guys continue to allow it. So you guys are enablers.
Dan Patrick
Oh, I'm an enabler. No, you're an enabler. Okay. All right.
Tom Brokaw
Take exception to being lumped into that group, by the way. Scene is not enabler. The host isn't.
Dan Patrick
No. Cuz Seaton usually throws himself in front of the car to say, todd, no, don't do it. But you do it. And I've given up hope after 23 years.
Tom Brokaw
That's fair. What we definitely needed today was another.
Dan Patrick
Song about a two week old topic. Ray Allen will join us a little bit later on. Christopher Mad Dog Russo will stop by as well. Your phone calls always welcome. 877-3-DP show email address dp@danpatrick.com Twitter handle At DP show we have no hockey tonight. We have no basketball tonight. But we can preview for tomorrow night and we can recap from last night. Yesterday during the show I said, you know, I like playoff hockey. I think it's the best of all the playoffs. And it is usually clean in the postseason. There's no fighting. And then all of a sudden they drop the gloves last night and let's play the feud. The Panthers took advantage of 21 Edmonton penalties last night to win 6. 1. In the last 10 years, there have been four playoff games with 140 or more penalty minutes. Three of those games, three of the four have involved the Florida Panthers. 20, 23, 2024. And this year, Stat of the day brought to you by Panini America. Introducing our starting lineup, the king of comedy, Fritzi Seaton, Marv Paulie, yours truly and the back room guys. Back room guys. I overheard this. It's a special day at the Mets game where it's $5 beers, $5 hot dogs, $5 everything. So Dylan wants to do a nine, nine, nine. Where you have nine beers, nine hot dogs in nine innings. What a great idea. Well, wow. Standing ovation by two of the Danettes. No, he hasn't done it yet.
Tom Brokaw
3.
Dan Patrick
Okay, he hasn't done it yet. But then I heard word that he doesn't want to do it today. And there he is. If you're watching on Peacock, our streaming partner, Dylan is holding up a T shirt. Do we know what the T shirt says? It's a bad day to be a hot dog. Oh. But then I was told that Dylan doesn't want to do it today. And he has been called, he has been labeled soft. Soft. Even Anthony, who just got here, calling out Dylan for being soft because he talked about this. He planned this. Tuesday's a special day to go see the Mets because everything is $5. Trying to do the 9, 9, 9. And now he says that he doesn't want to go. Weather is not supposed to be an issue. Supposed to be beautiful. And Dylan, who got everybody excited about this, apparently in the back room, all the Mets fans. And then Dylan doesn't want to go. Yes, yes.
Tom Brokaw
Paul, does he have to work his way up to it like four beers one day?
Dan Patrick
Oh, I think he's done that his entire life.
Tom Brokaw
Yeah, he's been preparing for this his whole life.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. If you've seen Dylan, he's been preparing for this. Alrighty.877.3 DP show email address dpdanpatrick.com Twitter handle @tp show mention Ray Allen will join us coming up a little bit later on. By the way, I'm not on social media. I just got on Facebook, which I love to look at videos.
Tom Brokaw
That's just.
Dan Patrick
That's. I. I just got on Facebook, like, six weeks ago, and I like to watch the videos there. There's usually a golf. You know, an instructional video there to help or something from the archives or music or, you know, whatever it might be. And then all of a sudden, I see this. LeBron doesn't have the bag. So I'm thinking, wait a minute, is bag money? Because I thought when you get the bag, it's. You get money. And then all of a sudden, I said to Marvin, can you help me? What does bag mean? I thought, LeBron has been well compensated in his career.
Tom Brokaw
So you're almost correct. He has the bag, which is the money.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Tom Brokaw
A bag is short for a bag of tricks, which means, like, your offensive arsenal.
Dan Patrick
So LeBron doesn't have a bag of tricks.
Tom Brokaw
Correct. 40,000 points in quote unquote, no bag.
Dan Patrick
Isn't that even more amazing that maybe doesn't have a bag of tricks or a. A Go to. You know, Kareem had one trick in his bag, and that was the sky hook. Is anybody. Seaton and I were talking about this. Has there been a more. I'm not gonna say I get polarizing, but it feels like I don't remember somebody being this great who's been criticized this much unless it's Tom Brady. But social media is relentless on LeBron James, and I keep thinking, what am I missing here? Even when he wins a title in the bubble, it's. Well, he wanted in the bubble, which was a disadvantage for LeBron and the Lakers because they would have had home court advantage. Instead, they went to something, you know, antiseptic as a bubble. And he won a championship. Oh, he had to join, create the Big Three. He tried to get players to go to Cleveland. I think Chris Bosh famously said, I didn't even want to fly over Cleveland. He was going to go to Miami. But, man, the. You know, the Talons come out. The venom comes out when it's LeBron James. I'm just surprised because I can't remember somebody who has been criticized this much. And I guess we have to look at the social media era other than Tom Brady. Oh, he could have done it without Belichick. Okay. He still did it with Belichick. Yes, Eden, I think maybe the word is disrespected, okay?
Tom Brokaw
Because he's. His accomplishments certainly speak for himself or themselves. But, you know, it. The LeBron conversation is perfect for social media because people are just editing clips of him not really doing anything and turning the ball over and being like, greatest of all trash, you know? And you're like, what?
Dan Patrick
That's not really fair.
Tom Brokaw
That's one play in one game of thousands.
Dan Patrick
And I guess maybe it's a slow time of the year for people while they wait for football and they don't care about the other sports, but I was just surprised that a guy who has 40,000 points doesn't have a signature move. They can do them all, which to me is remarkable. I mean, he does have a signature move. Michael Jordan's on record of saying, if I. If LeBron got me on his hip and he was going right, I can't stop him. So one of the greatest defenders of all time on ball, defenders of all Time says, if LeBron has me on his hip, I can't stop him. Okay, now, is he a great shooter? No, he's a great scorer. But the bag of tricks is that he doesn't have a trick in his bag. I mean, that's remarkable. And then you get 40,000 points and. Yes. Am I a LeBron apologist? For the most part, yes. Do I think it's. It's closer between him and Michael Jordan? It is, but they're just different. It's different era. It's. They're different players. You know, what one was required or asked to do and what one was required or asked to do, it's just different. And yes, Michael didn't go to another team to win a championship, but he had Jerry Krause, and nobody brings up without Jerry Krause. Michael doesn't win championships like this. He doesn't. Jerry Krause was incredible at bringing in talent to surround Michael, and Michael never liked Jerry Krause, the gm. And he might not have liked him because Jerry was getting credit for some of this, and Mike maybe didn't want to share, but they're. They're incredible player like Kobe. I. I brought up to the guys today. You know, Magic gets shortchanged as being one of the greatest players of all time. He is there with Larry Bird, but if you. I used to argue about how great Magic was, because when my point guard walks on the floor and he's six nine, I got a. A distinct advantage over you, whoever you put on him. I got an incredible advantage. How Many players in the history of the game, when they walk on the floor, all of a sudden you've got a mismatch, like a decided advantage, height advantage, talent advantage. And Magic didn't, you know, he chose to distribute. He didn't say, I'm good. He could have gotten 25, 30. But you know, we get caught up in who's great, who's the greatest, that guy's not great. And what we end up doing is we end up criticizing more players than complimenting more players. And that's where it gets kind of discouraging with it. And I, I, once again, it just kind of stood out. And I go, where does this come from? I mean, Skip Bayless made a career of every single day. It felt like criticizing LeBron James. And it's fake. All we wanted was reaction from you because he could get reaction. Because if your, your answer is Michael Jordan, you're going to win every argument. You know, it's the strength of going into an argument. You go, yeah, but I got the trump card. And that's, I've got Michael Jordan. And I, I just, he's Neil Armstrong. And LeBron might be the second astronaut on the moon maybe, but Mike did it. And you know, even Kobe, if Kobe did it before Mike did it, how would we view Kobe? We'd be like, Michael had to, you know, imitate Kobe. It's, it's unfortunate, but we do that with great player. I love an argument, but I love an argument where you're discussing the greatness of somebody. Oh, what did LeBron do? Never wanted to take the last shot. Two of Michael's most famous moments were John Paxton and Steve Kerr because they were the right players at the right moment in the right spot to take the shot. Nobody talks about that. You know, when the Bulls won their title against the Lakers, Magic was all banged. Nobody talks about that. It's, you know, we, we edit, you know, it's, it's convenient editing when it comes to sometimes when you're talking about great players, great teams. Yes, Marvin.
Tom Brokaw
You know, a DP later today I'm going to go to a barbershop and just say, hey, everybody. Oh, Marvin, do you need a haircut? Nope. LeBron's better than Jordan.
Dan Patrick
And then walk out, try to walk out.
Tom Brokaw
There'd be 10 guys. No, no, no, come back here. That's like taking the pin off the grenade and just throwing it.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. Yeah. I guess it shouldn't bother me because I mean, they're both all time greats, have been, you know, one's got $3 billion and the other one's got a bill and like they're okay, they're fine. But you know, sometimes when you're talking, I saw where somebody was saying, hey, who would you rather have, Kevin Durant or Larry Bird? And I go, okay, is this, this, this is real. Okay. Having a discussion about who would you rather have?
Tom Brokaw
That's not that crazy of, I know for some people it is, but it's, it's not that crazy of a thought.
Dan Patrick
For me it is. Yeah. Like would you say hey, Akeem or Kevin Durant? And the answer is nobody would have that argument. Hey, would you Kevin Durant. Oh, you would same. No way.
Tom Brokaw
Came 7ft tall, draining threes.
Dan Patrick
Hell yeah. Kane might be the best two way player in the history of the game. Unbelievable defensive player and he was unstoppable on offense. But okay, once again. But yeah, I, I would take, if I take Larry Bird and I, I had this argument the other day, discussion, I should say six years. Take the six best consecutive years out of careers. Now let's take Wilt out of it because those numbers are going to be video game like. But if you're looking at the best six years of somebody's career because that's a pretty good sample size. It's not three where you're kind of like, hey, he was good, but only for three years, six years. Would we change the rankings all time rankings of basketball players. And it would be just show me your best work. This isn't compiling. This is just you and, you know, fellow competitors. What were you during your era? And I think that would be fun. Maybe it's a, you know, homework project for Bill Simmons to, to work on. Him and Ryan Rosillo can give me the six best years together, not staggered. It's six years. And would we. I got off on a tangent today. Okay. All right. Anywho, no NBA or NHL tonight. We'll talk to Ray Allen. Coming up next hour, Christopher Mad Dog Russo from first take and SiriusXM a little bit later on as well. We'll settle on a poll question. Good morning. Got a tweet that says it started with calling himself the Chosen One. When someone self proclaims to be the best before scoring a point in the league, a target is on his back, adding in divisive political rhetoric that turns off half the country and the target doubles. He chose to dish it out. So we've returned the favorite. Okay, you can return the favor, but you also have to acknowledge he lived up to the hype and then some. He's got 40,000 points, so you might still have rhetoric that is negative and you tweet, but you have to acknowledge the positive here of the greatness. And yeah, you're right. Called himself the Chosen One. Came pretty close, lived up to it, did pretty well. Single family, home, did a lot of great things. Yes.
Tom Brokaw
Marv in Sports Illustrated calling the Chosen One. I know he embraced. I know he embraced it.
Dan Patrick
That was the COVID But I don't know, he might have had King James. I don't know if I don't know what came first. Si. Calling him the Chosen One or he called himself the Chosen One or King James or he certainly embraced it. He didn't run away from it, but he lived up to the hype. And I think that's pretty remarkable. And what he's done, business wise, pretty impressive. Now, you're not factoring that in of who's the greatest player of all time. I mean, Jordan wasn't a great teammate and Michael left the game for whatever reasons for two years Maybe to play baseball. So I think being fair to the totality of these careers, you know, there's a, there's a lot of positives, a lot of positives. And yes, there's negatives, but nobody talks about, well, Michael punched Steve Kerr, his teammate. Steve Kerr is impossible to punch. He's that nice. But once again, we tend to edit what we see, what we think, what we feel and what we saw on the court. But, you know, it's not a bad career. All said and done. If you would have said when he was on the COVID of Sports Illustrated in high school, that guy's going to end up with 40,000 points, nobody would have believed that. Yeah, Paulie.
Tom Brokaw
We had Grant Wallon, the great writer from Sports Illustrated, soccer writer. He came up with the name the Chosen One and worked with the editors at Sports Illustrated to give it to him for the COVID It did not come from LeBron, according to Grant Wall. So just to get the facts right on that self declared nickname, LeBron James.
Dan Patrick
Was on the Mind the Game podcast and he talked about being accused of not having a bag.
Tom Brokaw
Michael Jordan wasn't out there dribbling a thousand times, you know, to get to the spot. He get to a spot, right? And raise. I get, if I, if I'm a bigger than you and I get you on my shoulder, I get you on my hip, I'm gonna use my size. You know, I see it all the time. It was like, you know, I'll be on social media like, LeBron has no bag. I'm sitting over here. What is that? LeBron has no bag. And I'm sitting like a 50 billion points, right?
Dan Patrick
Ladies score all time in the NBA.
Tom Brokaw
No bag.
Dan Patrick
That's Steve Nash on the Mind the Game podcast. Shaq had no bag. Shaq's bag was his physicality. He had no moves other than to lower his shoulder and get you out of the way. That was it. But for some reason, LeBron is right in the middle of that dartboard. People have no problem whatsoever coming after him and his credentials. Yeah, Pauline, you're right.
Tom Brokaw
LeBron's bag is his physicality. 69270 and jacked with leaping ability, with dribbling ability, with good shooting ability, just like Shaq. It his, his calling card is his uncoverable physicality.
Dan Patrick
Gary.
Tom Brokaw
And almost like someone did choose him to be great.
Dan Patrick
Gary in Texas. Hey, Gary.
Tom Brokaw
Hey, Dan. How are you?
Dan Patrick
Great. What's on your mind?
Tom Brokaw
Not much. I wanted to comment. I'm also a LeBron disrespector, so I, I Just, I think he's a exceptionally good player, but I don't give credit to the players that are just outsizing and out athletic. Out athleticism, whatever everybody else like. For me, Shaq was great, but he didn't have the skill set of, say, Akeem. And for me, LeBron is just a guy that if he wanted to, he could just go steamroll everybody on the court and score every point. That wasn't skill to me. I. I value skill a lot more than just some guy that's just bigger. He. To me, he's like a dad beating up on a middle school, high school basketball.
Dan Patrick
So a guy who's 69252, 60, who is one of the greatest passers in the history of the game has nothing to do with size, that skill. That skill to see a court. And very few have seen the court better than LeBron James. So I get it. Gary, you think that he just uses his physicality. Yeah, There's a lot of athletes in the history of their sports who use their physicality. Yes.
Tom Brokaw
I think Gary brings up a pretty good point, though, in that, like, a player like Hakeem was able to overcome his deficiencies at the physical. His physical deficiencies to become a great player.
Dan Patrick
Like overcoming being, you know, seven feet tall.
Tom Brokaw
Yeah, yeah, right.
Dan Patrick
He did. You know, LeBron, look at everything he's got.
Tom Brokaw
He's not a guy like Akeem.
Dan Patrick
He just did the best with what he's got. I mean, that's a true. Somehow David Robinson overcame the fact that he was 7 2.
Tom Brokaw
He did it.
Dan Patrick
I mean, look at what he did.
Tom Brokaw
With a 7:2 body. I mean, that. LeBron could never do that.
Dan Patrick
Kareem, how did he do it? Saddled with that sky hook. And somehow he overcame that. Dang. LeBron later got a tattoo on his back that read Chosen One, the number one.
Tom Brokaw
As you said, he didn't shy away from the title.
Dan Patrick
No, he didn't. But he lived up to the hype. I mean, that was the thing with Michael. There was no hype. Not until he got into the NBA. And then all of a sudden, we kind of were along for the ride with that hype. But he was viewed as a guy who could just score. He was a highlight, and then all of a sudden realized, you want to be the greatest of all time, then you got to have, you know, players around you. And he did. The one thing that I think is so overlooked, underrated, is he took less money. He was making so much money off the floor, he took less money, and then they built that team around him, they kept players. Now, they were very good at interchangeable parts. But you're finding Horace Grant, you're finding Tony KU coach now John Paxton. Nobody wants John Paxton, Steve Kerr, Craig Hodges, Bill Wennington, Bill Cartwright. But they were the right pieces for that team. And he found Phil Jackson. He played for the greatest or, you know, one of the two greatest coaches of all time. LeBron didn't have that luxury of playing for great coaches. Mike did Shaq and Kobe did Aiden in Utah. Hi, Aiden. What's on your mind today?
Tom Brokaw
Yeah, then I, I got to defend Lebron right quick. So I'm one of your younger listeners, right? I've never watched the NBA without LeBron in it. So to me, he is undeniably undoubtedly the greatest player that I have ever seen. I can't. For me to say that Jordan's better than him by just watching Jordan Highlights on YouTube would be insane. The problem is everybody older than me who did see Jordan will never let go of that. They'll never, they'll never admit that Jordan, that somebody could possibly be better than Jordan because Jordan and their eyes is like Jesus.
Dan Patrick
Well, also, Michael never missed a shot. Until you go back and realize that Michael did miss shots. But we build up this folklore and we go, you know, Michael never missed shot. Okay, he did. He had bad games too. Believe it or not, he had bad games. But look, I was fortunate to be able to watch those games, certainly the NBA Finals and you know, you were watching something you had not seen before. Absolutely, positively. Do I think Kobe was Michael offensively? Yeah, better shooter. But Mike was going to take it to the hoop. You know, Kobe had mid range. Kobe could have been a great three point shooter. I mean, he would put in the time to be whatever he needed to be. He wanted to be Mike and came pretty close. I don't know who's coming close to being LeBron James. I don't think there's anybody right now where you go, that guy could get 40,000 points. That guy could be top 10 and assist and steals in a very good rebounder, become a better than average three point shooter. And he plays, he's avoided injuries. The, the durability has to factor in as well. And I brought this up, I don't know if it was last year, but if I said if I'm an owner and I can have somebody who's going to give me 22 years of great basketball, quality basketball, playing all the time, wanting to play all the time, or I get somebody who's going to play 15 years or 14 years, but the last couple of years aren't going to be very good. So I'm going to get 15 years, but really I'm getting maybe 11 great years out of Michael Jordan. Now, if I'm a businessman, I'm an owner, don't I want the guy who's going to give me 22 years? Right. It'd be like saying, I'm going to take Larry Bird over LeBron, but Larry's only going to give me about eight quality years, great years, unbelievable years, hall of Fame, LeBron's giving me 22. This argument will continue. It'll withstand the test of time, because there's nothing Michael's going to do that he needs to add to his resume. And the only thing LeBron could do is maybe win a championship. And if he does, you know what they're going to say? Well, he needed Luca to win the championship. Yeah.
Tom Brokaw
I think NBA players in the past 20 years are in an unwinnable situation with the older generation. Because when you compare the game of the 80s and 90s, it felt like there was an intensity that's not there now, a load. Management had not been invented. 82 games was expected. And those days are never coming back. So it's almost like there's a cloud over the past 20 years of basketball players that they. They all are in the same boat of not being the 80s, tough guy, play every game style. And so that puts them behind the eight ball in comparisons.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, they're just people who are never going to embrace LeBron. And it might be because of, you know, opinion stories on the periphery. Maybe there's political things that he's talked about. He does comment on too many things. And it's almost like people go, hey, LeBron, you're going to comment on this? You don't have to comment on everything. Tiger and Michael didn't. They famously didn't do anything politically, and they were criticized for that. They're businessmen. When it came down to do you have a voice? They chose not to have a voice. They were business people. And LeBron is as well. But he has. Has had a voice. He has said something, whether you agree with it or not. But this started with just a social media discussion that LeBron didn't have a bag. And that's why I said to Marvin, can you interpret this? And he said, no, he doesn't have a bag of tricks. And I was like, but he scored 40, 000 points. Yes, Marvin.
Tom Brokaw
And on top of that, we use, to me, we use the 45, 40,000 point measuring stick. Way too much because he was great at 30, 000 points. People were talking about him because it wasn't like, oh, he's just been doing it for a long time. No, no, he's been great. Like a top five player, if not the best player in the game for a long time. There's Michael Jordan six years, LeBron six years, Bird six years. There's some six year runs where it's like, you see these numbers? How come these guys don't have six straight MVP awards? So I think the longevity discussion kind of hinders LeBron's greatness.
Dan Patrick
Michael in Chicago. Not the Michael in Chicago. Or is it? No, it's not. Oh, okay. I thought it might have been Jordan. All right. I only golf with him one time. But I just wanted to say that your earlier caller, he was kind of right about how people my age, 63 years old, just, you know, aren't gonna.
Tom Brokaw
Let go of Jordan. And I remember when you had Joe Montana on the show one time, and this was after, I think Brady won.
Dan Patrick
You turn down your TV or radio there, Mike. Hold on. Okay, I'm sorry, I didn't.
Tom Brokaw
I usually put it on mute.
Dan Patrick
And he said, I don't know what it's like to go to a Super bowl and lose.
Tom Brokaw
Yes.
Dan Patrick
And I thought that was like a great comment. And I think about Jordan went to.
Tom Brokaw
A finals and never went to a.
Dan Patrick
Seventh game and closed everybody out, you know, in six. Yeah, yeah. I think. I'm sure Joe Montana has changed his tune about Tom Brady, that. Yes, Tom went and lost. Tom played maybe the greatest game for a quarterback in a losing effort against the Eagles that when he throw for 500 yards or they don't know if they punted, but, you know, they ended up losing that Super bowl. But yes, did LeBron. LeBron got to the NBA Finals and I, He. He dragged that Cavaliers team to the NBA Finals. That might be as remarkable as anything he did in his career. Because I was at that NBA Finals and they had no chance against the Spurs. None.
Tom Brokaw
Not Booby Gibson.
Dan Patrick
No. They had guys who wouldn't make the spurs team.
Tom Brokaw
Sasha Pavlovich.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. Big Z. Daniel Marshall. Zadronis. Ilgaskas.
Tom Brokaw
Eric Snow.
Dan Patrick
Eric Snow.
Tom Brokaw
We need a life. DP the fact that I know.
Dan Patrick
I know Eric Snow. Yes. Paulie.
Tom Brokaw
Tom Brady versus the Eagles in that Super Bowl. They lost 41, 33. Brady 28, 48. 505. Three touchdowns, no picks. And speaking of supporting cast, if you remove Gronkowski, his Supporting cast was James White, Dion Lewis, Rex Burkhead, Chris Hogan, Danny Amendola. Those are not superstars. Some nice players when.
Dan Patrick
When your starting receiver is known more for playing lacrosse than he is football. And Chris Hogan. Yes, Marvin.
Tom Brokaw
Tom Brady has some 07 Cavs teams that got. He got to the super bowl where it's like, who's this guy?
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Tom Brokaw
I mean, shout out to David Patton. And David, given those were not household names.
Dan Patrick
No.
Tom Brokaw
And he lost the super bowl with the best receiver he ever had.
Dan Patrick
I know, I know. Randy Moss. All righty. I don't know what we've accomplished the first 40 minutes, but maybe we got you riled up today. Yes, Satan, that's.
Tom Brokaw
I do love the Tom Brady criticism of. You know, he only did that because of Bill ch.
Dan Patrick
Belichick. Yeah.
Tom Brokaw
A defensive minded head coach. Like they won every super bowl.
Dan Patrick
Six, three, you know, and Belichick wanted to make sure he had a great defense and then was like, I'll leave the offense to Tom.
Tom Brokaw
Somebody else do that.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, Tom, I'll let you run the office. Only one of those games because Belichick is a genius. Yeah. And then Tom took everything he learned from Belichick and took that to Tampa, and that's why they won the super bowl down there, obviously. Obviously. All right, we'll take a break. We'll get some more phone calls coming up. Ray Allen will weigh in on this. Coming up.
Tom Brokaw
Yes, Paul, does Ray know what he's getting into?
Dan Patrick
No, he does not. No, he does not. Fritzi, just let Ray know that we have discussed the social media conversation about LeBron doesn't have a bag. Just so he knows. Okay. He's going to get this text from Fritzi. Yeah. Dan's been talking about LeBron doesn't have a bag. Just wanted to let you know. We'll take a break. Play of the day. Up next, be sure to catch the.

Well, Dan, I'm hoping I can get an assistant from Polly on this call because I stumbled upon something huge that I have to share with you guys. Polly, if I give you a phrase, can you Google it and then tell me if you think I'm onto something or if I'm crazy? Of course the phrase is Greg Maddox, reindeer sweater. Dan, I came across this yesterday. I was just scrolling through my phone, I saw this, and I instantly thought, what is Todd doing in a reindeer sweater? Went back to it. It's not Todd, but we do have a new name to add to the Fritzy celebrity lookalikes list. Paul Burt Young, Tyler Stewart, the drummer from Bare Naked Ladies, and now Greg Maddox. Paulie, do you see it? Yeah. This is a popular photo that's posted on the Internet and social media of Greg Maddox. He's wearing. He looks a little lightly portly. He's got a sweater on with a polo shirt sticking out and a baseball hat. And it says, this man won four.
Dan Patrick
Straight Cy Youngs and 350 games.
Tom Brokaw
Yes.
Dan Patrick
Does it resemble Fritzi?
Tom Brokaw
It looks like it could be a cousin of Fritzi.
Dan Patrick
Okay. In the family tree.
Tom Brokaw
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
All right, well, thank you, Doug Wesley in South Carolina. Hi, Wes. What's on your mind today?
Tom Brokaw
I'm long time. 6 2, 2, 15. Just want to give a big shout out to my hometown Dayton Flyers and let you guys in on a little story here. And let me tell you, it is not good. So a few months ago was my daughter's birthday, and all she wanted was Caitlin Clark tickets. So we paid a premium for two Caitlin Clark tickets tonight in Atlanta. Of course, as you guys know, she's hurt, and now you can't give them away. So we're trying to make the most of it, and we did by getting on the Dan Patrick show. But, yeah, we're just driving four hours to Atlanta and gonna try to have some fun. And has anything like this happened to you, Any of you guys before?
Dan Patrick
I think Marvin was worried about that. And. Safe travels there, Wesley. Have fun with your daughter. Really? That's what it's about. Have fun. You were worried you were buying your son tickets. See LeBron against the knit in the garden, Correct? Yeah.
Tom Brokaw
And I got him the day of because of the whole load management thing. I Just wasn't sure. And luckily he played and hit nine three pointers.
Dan Patrick
Tom in North Carolina. Hi, Tom. What's on your mind today?
Tom Brokaw
Hey, dp. I was looking at the Derek Henry interview you had. I mean, you know, kudos on that by the way, getting Adam Sandler involved and things like that. So it may be a clip that you guys are gonna be using for the sports Emmy, but I was kind of wondering what kind of pressure you have put on Derek Henry. Is your state of the art design department. Your state of the art design department. Are they going to create a graphic, a yardage graphic for Derek Henry for this year?
Dan Patrick
Yeah, I think we'll have the. The Adam Sandler movie graphic for Derek Henry. We'll have a tracker there. By the way, we came up with a graphic of the countdown towards the NFL season. We spent a lot of time on this and there it is. If you're watching on Peacock, you're welcome. I came up with that 86 days, 10 hours, 28 minutes and 10 seconds and counting before we have football coming up. Opening night, Thursday night. It'll be incredible. Mazer in Iowa. Hi, Mazer. What's on your mind?
Tom Brokaw
Hey, Dan. First time, long time. You know, LeBron's got a bag. You're right. It's called a moving bag. If you make him mad, he'll leave the team. I don't think I'd want to be an abusive 20 year relationship or every office season I gotta be worried if he's gonna come back or not. Because you didn't get the player, the coach, the gm, you know, and you want to talk about support staff for Jordan. He had everybody on their third team. Harper, Kerr, Randy Brown, Bison, Deli, Judd, Bushler.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, but those aren't good players.
Tom Brokaw
You're. You're correct. They darker players.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, when you. Yeah, but he did have a core. He had Pippen, had Horace Grant, he had Dennis Rodman and a Tony KU coach. Those are all hall of Fame players.
Tom Brokaw
Four of those guys they drafted, they got Rodman on his third team.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, but I, I gave credit to Jerry Krause. Something Michael Jordan never did. Jerry Krause drafted them. Michael didn't. You know who Michael wanted to sign? Walter Davis, who played at North Carolina. The Greyhound who was all banged up, couldn't play. Michael wanted to bring him in. Jerry Krause is the one who drafted those players, Mazer.
Tom Brokaw
Yeah, right. I still don't like LeBron.
Dan Patrick
He'll leave you in a heartbeat.
Tom Brokaw
And you know, to upend all these teams, get Anthony Davis and then trade him off and then still not succeed.
Dan Patrick
I think Everybody who's had LeBron is probably happy that they had LeBron. Now. I know that the, the acrimony with pat Riley and LeBron and LeBron wanting to leave, he would have stayed in Cleveland. He went back to Cleveland, guys. He went back to make sure that he was going to deliver what he said. He would win a championship. Yes. Is he a journeyman of sorts for being one of the greatest players of all time? Yeah, I guess, if you want to say that. But you know what? He was. People kept saying, no, you got to win championships. Oh, you're not Michael Jordan. Okay. Nobody wanted to play in Cleveland. It's documented. Nobody. Ray Allen's gonna join us. I hope he knows what he's in store for here. Fritzi.
Tom Brokaw
He has been informed.
Dan Patrick
Okay, Christopher Mad Dog Russo will join us. One hour in the books. Two more to go. Fritzi Seaton, Marv Paulie, yours truly.

The Dan Patrick Show: Hour 1 – "LeBron Has No Bag"
Release Date: June 10, 2025
Host: Dan Patrick
Co-Hosts/Guests: Tom Brokaw, Fritzy Seaton, Marvin Paulie, and upcoming guest Ray Allen
The episode kicks off with Dan Patrick and co-host Tom Brokaw diving directly into the day's hot topic: the contentious debate surrounding LeBron James and the viral assertion that "LeBron has no bag." Dan recounts an amusing incident where his friend Fritzy surprises him with a song, setting a humorous tone for the discussion.
Dan Patrick:
“I keep thinking, what am I missing here? Even when he wins a title in the bubble, it's... Well, he wanted in the bubble, which was a disadvantage for LeBron and the Lakers because they would have had home court advantage.”
(03:52)
The core of the episode revolves around the phrase "LeBron has no bag," a metaphorical critique suggesting that LeBron lacks a diverse set of skills or "tricks" in his basketball repertoire. Tom Brokaw provides an initial interpretation, clarifying that in this context, "bag" refers to LeBron's "bag of tricks" or offensive arsenal.
Tom Brokaw:
A bag is short for a bag of tricks, which means, like, your offensive arsenal.
(08:26)
Dan challenges this notion by highlighting LeBron's impressive career achievements, including accumulating 40,000 points—an unprecedented milestone in the NBA.
Dan Patrick:
“I keep thinking, what am I missing here? Even when he wins a title in the bubble... I keep thinking, what am I missing here?”
(08:32)
He emphasizes that LeBron's ability to score consistently without relying on a single signature move is a testament to his versatility and skill.
Dan Patrick:
“LeBron doesn't have a bag of tricks. Isn’t that even more amazing that maybe doesn’t have a bag of tricks or a... Does anybody... Has there been a more... I don’t get polarizing...”
(08:47)
A significant portion of the conversation is dedicated to comparing LeBron James with NBA legends such as Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant. Dan praises LeBron's longevity and all-around game, arguing that his ability to maintain peak performance over two decades sets him apart.
Dan Patrick:
“I love an argument, but I love an argument where you’re discussing the greatness of somebody... Nobody talks about that.”
(10:41)
Tom contends that LeBron's reliance on his physical prowess overshadows his technical skills, a point Dan rebuts by citing Michael Jordan's own flaws and the collaborative efforts required for championship wins.
Tom Brokaw:
“He’s like a dad beating up on a middle school, high school basketball.”
(29:01)
Dan Patrick:
“He plays, he avoids injuries. The durability has to factor in as well.”
(35:18)
The duo delves into how social media has amplified criticisms of LeBron, making him a lightning rod for both praise and disparagement. Dan argues that the relentless scrutiny on platforms like Twitter and YouTube distorts public perception, often magnifying minor mistakes into character flaws.
Dan Patrick:
“Skip Bayless made a career of every single day. It felt like criticizing LeBron James.”
(15:10)
Throughout the episode, Dan and Tom engage with listeners' calls, sharing personal stories and opinions that enrich the discussion. Notable interactions include:
Wesley from Dayton: Discusses the disappointment of not being able to attend his daughter's desired basketball game due to player injuries, paralleling broader themes of fan frustration.
Wesley:
“I was just scrolling through my phone, I saw this, and I instantly thought, what is Todd doing in a reindeer sweater?”
(47:32)
Tom in North Carolina: Expresses admiration for LeBron despite the criticisms, highlighting generational differences in how NBA legends are perceived.
Tom:
“I was looking at the Derek Henry interview you had... what kind of pressure you have put on Derek Henry.”
(50:02)
Looking ahead, Dan announces upcoming segments featuring Ray Allen and Christopher "Mad Dog" Russo, promising deeper dives into basketball lore and fan perspectives.
Dan Patrick:
“Ray Allen will join us a little bit later on. Christopher Mad Dog Russo will stop by as well.”
(04:01)
As the hour wraps up, the discussion circles back to the enduring debate of LeBron's place in NBA history. Tom maintains his stance, while Dan presents a balanced view, acknowledging both the accolades and the criticisms leveled against LeBron.
Dan Patrick:
“Nobody talks about that. It’s not a bad career. All said and done.”
(27:12)
Tom Brokaw:
“LeBron's bag is his physicality. 69,270 points in quote unquote, no bag.”
(27:10)
Dan Patrick (08:32):
“LeBron doesn’t have a bag of tricks. Isn’t that even more amazing that maybe doesn’t have a bag of tricks or a...”
Tom Brokaw (27:10):
“LeBron's bag is his physicality. 69,270 points in quote unquote, no bag.”
Dan Patrick (35:18):
“Do I think it’s closer between him and Michael Jordan? It is, but they’re just different.”
Tom Brokaw (15:10):
“Skip Bayless made a career of every single day. It felt like criticizing LeBron James.”
Hour 1 of "The Dan Patrick Show" offers a spirited and nuanced examination of LeBron James' legacy in the NBA. Through lively debate, personal anecdotes, and listener interactions, Dan Patrick and Tom Brokaw dissect the "LeBron has no bag" criticism, comparing him to basketball greats and exploring the influence of social media on his public image. With upcoming guests Ray Allen and Christopher Russo, listeners can anticipate even more in-depth discussions in subsequent hours.
Note: This summary omits advertisements, intros, and non-content sections to focus solely on the substantive discussions of the episode.
