Now, we get to 64 teams, we're ready to go, and, you know, Sunday at the Masters, you got college football on New Year's Day, NFL and Thanksgiving, everything carries a tradition. March Madness hits different because, you know, the interesting part is no champions crowned today. So all this is. Is just survival. Today, tomorrow, and then the weekend. That's all you want to do. Can you get through the weekend? Because then you get a little bit of time, you get some publicity for your school, and then you get a few days before your next round. But the urgency is unmatched. That's what I love about it, because you're just trying to get something that's fleeting and the margins razor thin. The upsets will come. They always do. And that's always the hook. Because for two days, it's. We. We kind of throw ourselves in, like studying for a final, cramming for a final all night to go and take it and then come away and act like, you know, college basketball. You win, you move on. You lose, you go home. It's simple, it's brutal, it's exhilarating, it's addicting. It's Madness. And that's what we love about it. All right, so get your brackets in. Well, we're starting to. There's some off air talk a little bit about the like, sort of reverse draft you might do a little later.

Okay. Dylan, would you explain this? That these are the top four seeds in each bracket. Each, you know, east, west, south, whatever it is. Yeah.

So we're going to. Obviously, I don't know what the east, west, north, north, south, whatever.

I don't know what the regions are.

Don't they have like east, west, south and Midwest?

[Dan Patrick]

Okay. All right. Or whatever.

So usually, obviously, the goal is to pick winners in the tournament. We're going to do the opposite. There's plenty of letdowns in the tournament. We're going to take the top four seeds. So a pool of 16 teams and each draft, three teams that we want to or not want to, we think will not do well. So you get knocked for advancing.

[Dan Patrick]

But do I get more points if I say I'm going to take Duke as the number one seed?

[Dylan]

Yeah. So you'll get four points for that. We'll go in reverse order. So if you take a one seed, you get four points, two seed, three, three seed.

[Dan Patrick]

Okay. So the worse they do, the better I do.

[Dylan]

Correct. So if. And it's. We're calling it the Arizona draft because

historically I know they. To the face because you can take Alabama to four seed and they don't have one of their better players and. But you only get one point if. Exactly. When they balance. Okay. All right, so we'll pencil that in.

Okay, all right, that's fine. But every year I always, I call them the Chargers of college basketball. I think they're going to win. I hope they're going to win and they don't win and then they bow out early usually. But this year, and even when I was filling out my bracket and then I gave it to the back room guys to type it up so we could show it. If you're watching on Peacock or NBC Sports Network. And then Mario goes, Arizona. And I go, yep, yep, this is the year. Yes.

Dylan, I feel like Arizona and the Chargers have sort of broken you. You just keep coming back, no matter how mean they are.

[Dan Patrick]

Yeah, but I haven't done that with the Chargers in a couple of years.

[Dylan]

They'll be back.

And I think when Philip Rivers was there, that was the last time. I don't do it anymore. But Arizona basketball, we're all in. Let's go, cats. Come on now. And there's, there's going to be a couple of players where you go, that guy's a star, at least for a day, a weekend, five days. And the one guy that I think you're going to like, well, okay. The way I used to play basketball, I love this guy. Now, remember Jack Golke at Oakland? He knocked off Kentucky. I think he was 23 years of age. And I remember having Caliperi on when he was at Kentucky. I go, did you think about double teaming the guy? And oh, yeah, smart ass. And I go, just saying, that guy was crushing you. High points. Chase Johnston, he's attempted, I believe, four or five two point shots this year. He shot four free throws. He is 64 for 132 from three point range. He makes 48 and a half percent from three point range. Seaton, that would be stat of the day.

Hey, thanks Dan. Got a couple things for you and a question for you. Yeah, Miami of Ohio proved last night they belong in the tourney and SMU proved the ACC is not the dominant basketball conference it once was from top to bottom. And Dan, earlier in the week you talked about Don Nelson's unique shooting style. I loved when he used to take foul shots. He'd shoot him one handed and he held the ball so daintily it was like he was holding a newborn. And also earlier in the Week. Dan, you mentioned that you and your wife worked at cnn, and I can't remember exactly this Final Four story, but while you were working a Final Four for cnn, didn't you and your future wife go on one of your first dates and you kind of had a Good Will Hunting moment? You pushed your press pass across the bar and said, sorry, guys, gotta go see about a girl.

[Dan Patrick]

No, it wasn't that.

[Todd]

It's better that way.

[Dan Patrick]

But it was Villanova, Georgetown, title game. And I went on a date. One of my first dates with my wife. We went to Chinatown in New York, and there's no monitors back. You know, nobody cares about a basketball game. But I wanted to prove to her how much she meant to me. It's like, I don't need to watch the national title game, even though I was going to either Georgetown or Villanova, whoever won the title to cover the parade. Well, Villanova shocks the world, beats Patrick Ewing, John Thompson. And my wife, at the end of dinner, goes into the bathroom, and I call the hotline number at cnn, and I said, hey, can you give me an update on the game? And they go, oh, you didn't see it? Now, in this business, you never want to be told or ask. Oh, you didn't see it because then, you know, oh, my goodness. And then they told me the whole story. You know what? Harold Jensen was on fire in the second half, and Villanova shocked Georgetown. And just then. So I. I'm at a pay phone in the Chinese restaurant, and I hang up the phone, and then my girlfriend, now my wife, comes out, and she goes, what? I go, nothing. She goes, no, something. What? Something bad happened? I go, no, no, not at all. Was it the basketball game? I said, yes, it was. And I said, villanova pulled up, pulled off one of the bigger upsets of all time, and she goes, are you mad? I go, no, no, not at all. I said, but I'm gonna have to go to Philadelphia for the victory parade. But not right now. Not right now. But, yeah, that was one of my first dates, but I was like, I'm gonna show her I'm not a. All about sports. Yeah. Yes.

[Dylan]

Dylan, I think it actually worked out in your favor that it was such a great. If it was just a snoozer, you'd be like, I don't really care.

[Dan Patrick]

Yeah. But then I think I sent the message that, hey, one of the great games of all time. It's okay. I had one of the great meals dates of all time right here with you.

No biggie.

It's like there was a guy who once held the minor league record for home runs. I think his name was Roger Freedom. I can hit like 242 home runs in the minor leagues. But he couldn't get to the majors. I know he played a little bit, but Mac McClung, I saw him the other night, he put up 54 and yes, I'm watching G league basketball. He's unbelievable. I know he can't guard anybody, but why? There's a lot of guys who can't guard anybody in the NBA. But he shoots threes. He'll have double digit assists. I mean he's, he's a different. He's. He's so different than everybody else in that league. It feels like. Yeah.

Paulie, two things how can Mac McClung not be on the Nets roster? Yes, they're horrid and they're unthreatening. Not necessarily in that order, but I

Yeah, I know. You know, they, it feels like roles have been defined with the Lakers. You beat the Rockets again. And this is really important because if LeBron goes out there and knows that he is the third option capable of being a first option anytime down the floor. But it's Luca, then Reeves, then him. And he was great last night. He missed one shot, ended up with 30. And if you can get that. But it comes back to, I need you to be able to stop somebody because at some point you're going to. OKC plays great defense, spurs play great defense, Celtics play great defense, Lakers not so much. But Lucas scores 40, LeBron had 30, LeBron was 13, 14 from the floor. You know, that's the dangerous team right there. And that's what you want to be you. You be a three seed here. And to beat the Rockets, you know, you played him twice, so you know, the familiarity was there. But to watch LeBron and to get and. And it feels like they go as he goes. I expect Luca to put up volume, Austin Reeves to put up good numbers. But LeBron is the what do you need from me? And it takes me back to, I believe Bill Sherman was the coach of the Lakers back in the early 70s and he asked Wilt Chamberlain, I need you to play defense. I need you to rebound and block shots. So the all time leading score at the time, he said, I want you to play defense because I got guys who can score. They ended up winning a title. They won 33 games in a row. But Wilt. And granted, Wilt had a bad knee at the time, but still Wilt was committed to being a great defensive player. I think, I think he made 72.5 or 9% of his shots that year. Everything he had was basically just dunks. But he knew that if they were going to win, it was going to be. He was playing defense. Everybody else would worry about the offense. Adam in Michigan. Hey, he had a great college career. Yeah, I was there when they won the national title and he had a. He had a good pro career. But I go back watching his dad, Henry Bibby, play at ucla. Not the same player. Mike, Mike was a better player, but Henry Bibby playing for John Wooden, he was a really good player. Yeah.

Paul, I've got Mike Bibby's career stats. He had a really nice run with Sacramento when they were relevant. He did not make an all star team, and he had a couple seasons where he averaged 20 and 7.

They don't retire numbers like they're going out of style. And the other thing I would say, yeah, I love your take on conception. Should be in the hall of Fame. And I agree with you on that. Thank you, Billy. Yeah, the whole retired jersey number, I mean, make it special. I, I like the Cowboys had number 88, say Drew Pearson, and then Michael Irvin, now CD Lamb. So it became a tradition, an honor to wear that. And I like that. I like what the Cowboys do. They honor the number and you say you're honoring the number with Drew Pearson, but it's available for, you know, Michael Irvin to wear. And CD Lamb, I like that. But if I'm going to USC and I only want to go to USC or part of going to USC is I need number 11 because that's my number in high school. But you retired that with Matt Leinert. If I'm going to usc, I. I want to form. Forge my own career. I want to retire my own number. I don't want Matt Leinert's number 11. That you want to un. Retire so you can have it. It's Matt Leinert. See, you want a Heisman, you get your jersey retired. Yes.

Yeah, I think I fall more in line with the. You receive the number as an honor. Similar to like you're saying with the Cowboys. Right. If you're a wide receiver and they give you 88, that's a. That's a major honor. Like, I'm. I'm in line with all of these other guys. I feel like that's something really special that more teams should do.

And would you make the number more important than the school? What kind of. What kind of message does that send? It's like, do you really want to play for USC? If we can't give you 11 because it's retired now, you're going to go somewhere else. Yeah, but nil money.

But if anyone would do that, if anyone would pass on going to a school that's obviously not something that had any major passion to play for that school. If the number is more important than that.

Like, for me, if the number is that important for a recruit, that is a massive red flag. Like a gigantic red flag. Because that's not the only thing that they're going to be super demanding about. That's one of the things that they're going to really, like, stomp their feet. I'd be like, you know what? I'm good.

But this could be the norm now. And not 10 years ago. Ten years ago, the wide receiver being recruited by USC wasn't making more than the guy recruiting him, which is absolutely possible for a recruiting coordinator.

Yeah, but you know what? It's okay to say no to your kids. It is. It's okay. Yes.

[Paulie]

And I don't know that respect should really be determined singularly on who makes more money in this conversation.

Yeah, but it gives them the power to ask for things that they might not. In their minds, they might be like, hey, you're paying me a couple million dollars. I want number 11. You're not getting a number 11. I can't imagine somebody saying, well, then I'm not going to usc. Yes, Dylan, you could do like they

do in the pros. When someone gets traded and they want the number, be like, I'll give you 250 grand for it.

But Leonard said, you can't give me anything. I'm not going to have you on. If you win a Heisman, they retire your jersey at usc. Yes.

And the weirdest part of it too is that USC is the one that decided to retire his jersey and now they're going to ask him, you mind if we un retire your jersey? Even though he never asked for it in the first place. It's not like he was like, you know what? I think I'm retiring my jersey. Usc, you guys can't use it anymore. They made the decision.
