It's hour one on this Wednesday, Dan and the Dan Ants. Dan Patrick Show. Glad to have you on board. That was fun last night. Got some basketball, got some Michael Jordan. I was good. And you got a little bit of football last night as well. Surprise, surprise. All right. 877-3DP Show Email address dpdanpatrick.com Twitter handle @DP Show Ross Tucker, our good buddy, will join us a little bit later on. We'll talk about some dysfunctional teams, certainly with the jets with their owner talking about the quarterbacking situation and of course the Dolphins as well. Don Mattingly, Donnie Baseball. He's a Blue Jays bench coach. So former player, former manager, now a coach. And I think after 5200 games in his career, he's going to the World Series. So we'll talk to Donnie Baseball. That'll be in the final hour of the program. 877Three DP show operator Tyler is sitting by doing nothing but waiting for your phone calls. Email address dpdanpatrick.com Twitter handle @dpshow Full NBA slate tonight. Some random college football as well. Russell Wilson had a big hit on Sean Payton. We'll talk about that. And once again, Woody Johnson, the Jets owner, steps in it again. But we begin with the NBA on NBC. And Michael Jordan makes his media debut. And it was fun. Oh, this is music to Todd's ear. Oh, the best. It was always Bob Costas bringing you in to watch the NBA on NBC. Now it's Mike Chico. Chico sat down with Michael Jordan and as Paulie likes to say, Michael Jordan is Jaws. He's, he's, he is the Shark. He's the Shark and Jaws. Now, if you remember the movie, it takes a while before they actually show you the shark. And that's Mike. They waited. They waited and, you know, whatever. How many minutes, how many, you know, 45 hour in then you got to see Mike sit down with Mike Tirico. And they talked about a variety of things. Now, it wasn't a long conversation. I'm gonna guess maybe they're sitting down hopefully and having an hour at one point and then maybe next month another hour. I hope it's more like Details with Kobe Bryant where we can understand what Mike sees, how he played the game, saw the game and you know, maybe shed some light on what is it that made him so great and what he sees in other players. Here is Michael on why he decided to join NBC. So you let us bring a camera or two to your place here to talk to you about basketball. Why do you want to share what you're thinking about basketball now? It's pay it forward. You know, I have an obligation to the game of basketball. Not financially. I'm okay. I mean, I think more or less from the. From. From as a basketball player is to be able to pass on messages of success and dedication to the game of basketball. Okay. Once again, Kobe was wonderful with this when he did his show. Details. You know, Mike usually don't. Doesn't let you in. He doesn't need to do interviews. He says he's going to pay it forward. He's going to get paid. Paying it forward, I'm sure by NBC. But it's still great to have him around the game. And Mike asked him about his love of today's game. Still love it. Love it like you wouldn't believe. I mean, you know, honestly, I wish I could take a magic pill, put on shorts and go out and play the game of basketball today, because that's. That's who I am as that type of competition, that type of competitiveness is what I live for. And I miss it. I miss that aspect of playing the game of basketball, Being able to challenge myself against what people see as great basketball. But it's better for me to be sitting here talking to you as opposed to popping my Achilles and I'm in a wheelchair for a while. Yeah, you can't replicate that. You can't replicate the competitiveness that you get from a sporting event. All of these great athletes talk about that. That's why they try to find other things that bring them something close to that. You know, Peyton Manning's successful businessman. Tom Brady is an announcer, but he's also an owner. You get golf involved in this for Mike. You get gambling involved in this with Mike, that gets his creative juices going. But it was good. It was good to have him there associated with the game. I thought it was just a great performance by NBC and bringing that back, and it felt bigger. And I think that's what the goal is, to make this bigger. This is network tv, and that's the way it used to be in the 90s that you had network TV, but you had more of Albert and you had Bill Walton and Bob Costas, Steve Snapper Jones, you had that music. In fact, John Tesh, I think, is going to join us this week. Todd, is that right? He should be joining us probably on Friday. Okay. All right. Is he going to play the NBC theme music? The way I understand that he will be playing some Round Ball Rock for us. Okay. Oh, boy, you're going to be geeked for that. We're having John Tesh on to play Round Ball Rock. Yes, we're back. Yes. Yes. If we don't win an Emmy this year, I quit. That's it. Stat of the Day, brought to you by Panini America. The official trading cards of the program. The Joe Flacco T shirt is available. Yep. You didn't ask for it, but you got it. And you can go to danpatrick.com you'll find the Flacco Flacco around and find out T shirt. Yes, Eaton. I sorry, I'm not off of John Test yet. People will pay tickets to go to a concert to go see John Tesh perform with, like a live orchestra, a whole live band. And he'll be like, and here's Round ball Rock. And he'll play that song and then he'll be like. And that reminds me of when I wrote the Entertainment Tonight theme. And then he'll do that theme. That's. People go and they watch that at the concert. Hey, maybe we could get a two for. Maybe we could get a two for an Entertainment Tonight and Round Ball Rock. Now it's time for a stat of the day. That's a great idea. Do you think I could ask John Tesh live? You can ask. Could you do stat of the Day, John? And then maybe we give, you know, some examples and then he could go, sure, I could do that. Maybe he could do it to Entertainment Tonight around Ball Rock. First hour. Luca went for 43, but the Lakers in their last nine home openers or openers, I should say nine openers, one in eight. And you don't have LeBron there and you start to look at the roster. I wanted to see how deandre Ayton was going to play because Lucas said, you got to get me a big man that I can get in the lane and I can throw lobs, too. Okay, it's only one game, but I'm not quite so sure about Deandre Ayton. I think I penciled him in as a 1610 guy. I figured that's that's not asking a lot. 16, 10 guy. Number one pick in the draft, and you're gonna need it. Golden State is still dangerous. They're probably one of the three best teams out west. You still have staff. Jimmy Butler went off. Draymond got a technical six minutes in, so right on cue. They got some depth there. It's an odd mix. It's still weird to see Jimmy Butler. Cause he. He doesn't flow in the way the warriors normally do, or we're accustomed to, hey, come down in transition, hitting threes. Jimmy is more mid range, get to the hoop kind of guy. And he had a big night again last night. But you still have Steph being Steph, and that'll be enough to keep you in the. In the, you know, upper echelon out west. And the west is stacked and OKC is great. Okc now, you know, we haven't had a team repeat the last seven years. We've had a different champ all seven years. And if I was betting, I would probably say, I'll take the bet that we'll have a different team winning the NBA championship. It's just hard to repeat. But you do have a young team, might be the youngest team still in the NBA. They have depth. You have sga. Chet Holmgren looked really good last night. And you know, they're a balanced team. Good team defensively, a really good team as well. But we'll see what Minnesota has to say about this, Denver has to say about this. Houston. Houston's got an odd roster, got a lot of tall guys, but they don't have a point guard. Fred Van Vliet, injured, out for the year. You need a point guard on that team because Reed shepherd is not your point guard. He's a guy that you point to and you. You say to the opposition, go after Reed Shepherd. That happened last night. Marvin's texting me, goes, they're going after your guy, Reed Shepherd. They were, they were singling him. Who is the guy with okc? Who's going after him? Case and Wallace, of course. You have Case and Wallace going after Reed Shepherd. And I went, oh, they're putting him on an island. Yes, Marvin, yes. I'm watching the game last night, and Case and Wallace has the ball and they're literally clearing out for him. I was like, when did they clear out for Case and Wallace? Oh, Reed Shepherd's guarding him. But okc, you know, SGA is just. He has that innate ability. There's something about certain players where you go, I don't know how he does it, but he does it, and he does it on a consistent basis. And he gets you clutch points when you go for 35. But you give me 18 in the fourth quarter in overtime, you know, that's a star. When the game is on the line, I want you to have the ball. And that's why they got Kevin Durant. But they didn't go to Kevin Durant late in the game. But that's why you got Kevin Durant. So you have that closer. They didn't have the closer last year. They had talent, but that's why you got him. I want Kevin Durant. Although this first time I watched, I looked at him and I go, man, he's. He's older. He's older. The light up top. Yeah, but, you know, Mike made being bald, you know, famous, but I would just go bald, you know, same thing with LeBron, but that didn't make you older. It just felt like Durant seemed older for the first time. I mean, you got LeBron with sciatica. That's what I would have. Not be one of the great athletes in the world. What's next? Bunions. Dnp. Dnp. Bunions. But great night, fun night, basketball. You got a full slate coming up tonight. The odds for the World Series. Dodgers, big favorites. Shohei Ohtani, big favorite to be the World Series mvp, followed by Vlad Guerrero, then Freddy Freeman and George Springer. Ohtani, off one game, got the National League Championship Series mvp, because he didn't do much prior to that, but he did a whole lot in Game 4 to be the MVP of the NLCS. I don't know who else you would have given it to. I would have given it to Blake Snell. I think he set the tone for the entire series, was starting pitching, had the one hitter. I thought that that was like, oh, wow, okay. And then the rest of the pitching staff followed suit, but I think Ohtani on the nameplate had them put team effort. Instead of Shohei Ohtani, I believe. And his way of saying, yeah, probably shouldn't be the mvp. We all are the mvp. All right, Seaton poll question for hour one is what? We got two options for you here. Best part of the NBA being back on NBC is Michael Jordan or the music. Okay. I expect the music to win in a landslide. Just saying. Okay, yeah. I want to see what else they do with Mike. I want to see how excess, you know, because Mike Tirico's got to go down to Mike's place. And it's basically Mike's home court advantage. Here. And how often is Mike Tirico going to be able to go there and do a sit down with Michael Jordan? And what exactly are you talking about? Things that happened maybe last week. Are you talking about kind of a bigger picture with players or teams or maybe his assessment of LeBron? Not necessarily something that happened. So I don't know how timely it's going to be. That would be my biggest concern is, are we talking about things that are happening right now in the league, or is it maybe a broader spectrum for Mike? Yeah, Paulie, it does feel like it's gonna be less analysis and more just riffing with Mike and seeing what you got. But he's probably the least accessible superstar of the past quarter century. He does commercials, but not interviews. And I find it even last night that the story about shooting a free throw at a rental house, I don't know if it was impressive or sad. He's a mixed character. I'm not. I got kind of bummed out, but. Because it feels like he'd pay a billion dollars to be Michael Jordan again for one year. He'd write a check for half his net worth to be 30 again for one year, which I think everybody would. But it felt like he brought it up. It grinded him. Oh, I wouldn't spend that money. I think he would in a second. I think. No, I think Mike. Mike loves his money. I think if you said, hey, Mike, would you spend $100 million to be you for one more year? Maybe not a billion. I have his net worth, his 3.8. He could skip a bill. Yeah, he ain't skipping anything. Mike gets paid. Mike's still. If Mike didn't have Air Jordan, if he didn't have his brand, Mike would be more accessible. He might be more like Peyton Manning, but he doesn't have to work. He plays golf and probably goes to a couple of board meetings, maybe zoom calls, and that's it. Like, Larry Bird disappeared. Like, that's a recluse. Mike disappeared just so he could play golf. And he doesn't have to work. Larry doesn't want to do anything. He probably just wants to drink beer and, you know, hang out in French Lick, Indiana. Yes, Larry tried for a minute. He did. And then I decided, either he decided he didn't want that or that decided it didn't want him, you know, but then he was like, I think I'm good. But magic, Is there magic with his business empires, like, there's certain players. Joe Montana's not around. I mean, he was pouring drinks in South Bend, you know, with a Guinness sponsorship. But he does interviews. He's available. But Magic has a business empire here and, you know, he was doing stuff on first take in the NBA. So and I'm curious about Barkley and crew with their debut on the mothership. And you know, now, now you have, you know, some comparisons here. You got NBC and now we're going to go, okay, let's see what the mothership does. You bring in Shaq, you bring in Charles and Kenny Ernie, and they'll make their debut tonight. All right, take a break. We'll come up with a poll question here. 877-3-DP show. We're back after this Dan Patrick Show. Milwaukee, WI 96 calories, 3.2 carbs per 12 ounces the big take podcast from Bloomberg News dives deep into one big global business story. Every weekday, a shutdown means that we don't get the data, but it also means for President Trump that there's no chance of bad news on the labor market. What does a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich reveal about the economy? Our breakfast foods are consistent consumer staples, and so they sort of become outsize indicators of inflation. What's behind Elon Musk's trillion dollar payout? There's a sort of concerted effort to message that Musk is coming back. He's putting politics aside. He's left the White House. And what can the PCE tell you that the CPI can't? CPI tries to measure out of pocket costs that consumers are paying for things, whereas the PCE index that the Fed targets is a little bit broader of a measure. Listen to the big take from Bloomberg News every weekday afternoon on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts in the new podcast Hell in Heaven, two young Americans moved to the Costa Rican jungle to start over. But one will end up dead, the other tried for murder not once. People went wild, not twice, stunned, but three times. John and Anne Bender are rich and attractive, and they're devoted to each other. The Crying Wolf podcast is the story of two men bound by injustice, of a city haunted by its secrets and the quest for redemption, no matter the price. White victim, female, Pretty, wealthy, black defendant. Chicago. A white woman's murder. A black man behind bars for a crime he didn't commit. I got 90 years for killing somebody I have never seen, he says. The police are his friends. And then that's it. They turn on him. A corrupt detective. How he was interrogated, the techniques. That's crazy. A snitch and a life stolen. They got the wrong guy. But on the inside, Lee Harris finds an ally in his celly, Robert, who swears to tell the truth about what happened to Lee and free his friend. And if you're with me, your goal is, I'll take care of you. I'm going to be with you. You stuck with me for life. Listen to the Crying Wolf podcast starting on October 22nd on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. We'll settle on a poll question this first hour. Your phone call is always welcome. Ross Tucker, our good buddy. We'll talk about the Jets. I always start at the top. And there are times when I see these billionaire owners and I go, how did you become a billionaire? And then Seaton goes, they inherited their money. And I go, oh, okay. They did it the old fashioned way. They inherited their money. And then they start talking football. And you go, no, no, Woody Johnson, don't, don't. And Woody threw his quarterback under the bus. Do we have Woody Johnson? Here he is. It looks like he's turning around parts of it. You know, it's hard when you have a quarterback with, you know, with a rating that we've got. You know, I mean, he has stability, but something just is not jiving. But if you look at any head coach of the quarterback like that, you're going to see similar results. If you go across the league, you have to play consistently at that position, and that's what we're going to try to do. If we can just complete a pass, it would look good. You got to complete some paths. You got to convince them that you can do something. Why are you talking? And it feels like this is kind of a bait and switch. Hey, I'm going to rip my quarterback, but I'm not going to say anything negative about my head coach, Aaron Glenn. Aaron Glenn deserves blame, too. He was going to change the culture. Nothing's changed. And look, did I think Justin Fields could be a good quarterback? I did. Some part of me still thinks he can be a good quarterback. I don't know if he's had a good quarterback coach to help him, but playing for the jets does not help. And having an owner who is going to criticize the quarterback and not his head, just don't say anything like why? So we'll talk to Ross Tucker about that situation there. The Russell Wilson situation with Sean Payton is certainly interesting because for some reason, Sean Payton was hoping that the Giants would start Russell Wilson, his former quarterback against the Broncos, instead of Jackson Dart. And here is Sean Payton BRONCOS HEAD COACH I have a ton of respect for that organization. I spent four of my early years there coordinating Super Bowl. First time, first game in this stadium before 9 11. Close with the Mayor Tisch family. And, you know, they found a little spark with that quarterback. I was talking to John Marin not too long ago and I said we were hoping that that change would have happened long, long after our game. Okay, that's a shot at Russell Wilson. Now, they had a bad divorce in Denver. This one I don't understand about that. Okay, Russ might be washed, but don't you blame ownership for making a stupid trade, giving him that money, trading those draft picks, trading those players. Maybe Russ didn't help the situation with coming in entitled, maybe wanting his own office. I understand all of that. Move on. I was disappointed in Sean. You got Bo Nicks. You got the win. Move on. Why are you taking a shot saying basically you wanted to face Russell Wilson because we would have a better chance? Russ sent out a note and said, classless, but not surprised. Didn't realize you're still bounty hunting 15 plus years later through the media. That, of course, is a reference to him being suspended in 2012 for the entire season for his role in the Saints bounty gate scandal. Yes. Is it possible coach was talking about Jameis Winston? Just throwing it out there for fairness? Yes. Todd, that tweet by Russell Wilson is like, to me ten times more surprising than Sean Payton's comment because it's so not his character. He just kind of lets things go and religious and, you know, love and peace for everyone. So it was really weird that he felt they need to do that. Yeah, Russ broke character there. He's only broken character a couple of times, and one was on our show when he wanted out of Seattle. But Sean Payton said, say something about front office there. They're the ones that made this deal. I mean, Russ failed miserably if. If you're going to look at it big picture. And Sean didn't like him, Wanted to get, you know, he definitely wanted to get his quarterback. I understand all of that. Tough to take over a team and then you inherit a quarterback that you don't think can run your offense. You want somebody younger that you can mold, and Sean's been able to do that. But to take a shot at Russell Wilson, I mean, that's not fair to Russ. If they lost the game, is he going to say the same thing? You won the game. What are you doing? Seaton. Okay, give me a couple of poll questions. They're smart enough to bring me in, so they couldn't have been that dumb. Anyway, let's see, we got up there, we're putting up. Best part of NBA being back on NBC. Michael Jordan, a round ball rock. If you take Oklahoma City out of the mix, the most threatening team last night, Lakers, Rocker, Rockets or Warriors? Oh, I like that. I don't find the Lakers threatening. I think they're over. Under is 47. Houston's got a lot of talent. They got a really good coach. It's just a weird mix when they're out on the floor. I'm going to say Golden State. I'm going to. I'm going to hold on to that. Jimmy Butler usually gives you about two or three year honeymoon period, and then all of a sudden it goes bad that. First of all, seeing Jimmy Butler in a Warriors uniform is weird. It is still. It's still just weird. It's like one of those, like. Oh, yeah, that's right. He's there now. Do you think that Draymond Green went, wait a minute. I'm the jerk on the team. We. You can't bring in Jimmy. I'm. That's my role. He probably talked to Jimmy and said, just so you know, I'm the jerk on this team. You could be the secondary one. But when they think of warriors and jerk, it's me. All right. Just pecking orders. Yes, Paul. No, No. A double negative is a positive. Remember algebra class. Two negatives = a pos. I like the Jimmy Butler window. It's short and explosive, but for a while it's good. And then it goes bad. I'm prepared to pick the warriors to finish second in the West. They're already in first after one night. Okay. Not tied there. No place to go but down. I think. I think the depth is interesting with Al Horford's there, by the way. Oh, yeah, I know. You got 8 and 4 coming from Al. Hall of Famer Al Horford and Buddy healed off the bench. Yeah, I like him. Okay. I love. Okay. Yes, Marvin. Yeah. There's gonna be one game where Jimmy and Draymond become Jimmy and Draymond and everything kind of implodes because Steph has no control. Well, we've seen that where Steph would get openly upset when he sees Draymond Green doing something stupid in the playoffs. Like, they have four titles. They could have five. That's true. That's why when somebody said, man, Draymond's got four, you know, he should have five. Yeah, yeah. See? How many years do you think Steph has left. I'm not trying to retire him on opening day after opening night, however, we're in that window with the way he plays. How long can he continue to play this way, play that way? Yeah, that's actually, that's the key, isn't it? Yeah, yeah. Because I don't know if he would want to take the role of Klay Thompson of a spot up shooter. But then you got to find somebody who can do what Steph does and do that better than Steph. And then Steph is a second or third option. Well, I think you would just. I don't know if you need to replace Steph with a better version of Steph because that's never going to happen. That, that's nearly impossible. But running the team, but running point, though, I mean, you could find a point guard and have Steph be more of a spot up shooter, but you have to find somebody who will do that better than Steph does or Steph's going to continue to do it. Because then why would Steph go to be in a shooting guard if you can't find somebody who can replicate what he does? At least run. He can't shoot like him, but like Steph is a, he's not a point guard. Like, you know, we don't have positions anymore. He created his own position. But I think trying to find somebody who. Well, Draymond is your point forward. So what person are you putting in for Steph? And then you say to Step, but Steph gets open by running. He's always running. His handle is great. Maybe. Well, I hope he has a few more years. I hope. I mean, I enjoy watching him. So I would say three years. Three years. Yes, Marvin. Now see, do you just mean a true number one option? So say if there's somebody that's an all NBA player. So if Luca went to the warriors, is that what you mean as far as like a true number one option where Steph can move over in his later years and just be the number two option? I'm saying if you can find somebody to run point and Steph becomes a spot up shooter because Steph maybe has lost a step or instead of playing, you know, 20 minutes a night at point, you can get 30 out of them as a spot up shooter is what I'm saying. I'm not, I'm not saying that you need to find a better version of Steph to do what that is because he's, you know, maybe it's just age related is what I'm saying. Yeah. Later in his career, how much can he do? And can you prolong his career by having him as his second or third option? What if you get somebody like Giannis and then what role does Steph play? Because there was talk that maybe Giannis and the Warriors. That was in the off season. There were reports that came out that the Knicks could have had Giannis. Brian Windhorse talked about this on the Mothership, but they didn't give enough. I think they feel like they have enough. I do. I think they feel like they have enough to go to the NBA Finals, but I don't know. You would have to give up draft picks, maybe a couple of players. I'd certainly rather have Giannis than the greatest big man in NBA history. As far as shooting with Carl Anthony Towns. Yes, yes. Seaton. Yeah, I was going to add in that they feel like they can make it that way, but all goes well. Need a little bit of that too, you know. Yeah, yeah, Marvin. But the issue is going to be if the Knicks get Giannis and they lose. Man, if we just had an outside shooter, that's what's going to happen. Because Giannis had an amazing championship run, but what has he done since? Yeah, but the fact that they did have a chance for him, because I thought he was available, I didn't know, you know, And I still don't know what it was going to cost. I'm going to guess five first round picks and probably a player or two, but if I can get Giannis. All you want is you want that one championship. It's not like you say, well, we're going to build for the future. Man, the future is now in sports. It's not, hey, we're in position like the Pirates are in position, you know, in the future, we're building towards the future until you realize they keep building for the future and you need the present day. Yeah, Marvin. But then you get Giannis and you trade three rotation guys, you lose in the playoffs. Man, if the Knicks had more depth. Well, no, I'm not giving three players. I would give five first round draft picks and I'd give maybe one or two players. But. And what's the honest to see getting up there, see like 33. Yeah. Paulie. Yeah, he's 33. But if you're the Milwaukee Bucks, I think their angle is interesting. If they're below.500 after 20 games, they could trade him while he's still got max value. Yeah, you. That's where you got to start looking at this and saying, is it a matter of time before he's going to end up on another team late in his career. And what can we do to maximize that either? Trying to win and surrounding, I think that's what he wanted is like, all right, what's your future here? Like where? What are we doing? And then do you have a chance to win another championship there? Couple of phone calls. Chris in Syracuse leads us off. Good morning, Chris. What's on your mind? Hey, thank you, Dan. Hey, I wanted to comment on the Lakers and also you were talking about the jets owner talking too much. Somebody should also tell Woody the word he's looking for is jiving, not jiving on the Lakers. The slimmed down version of Luka is unreal and going to the hoop. He's always had great footwork, but he was always kind of slow and plotting in the paint. Now with with speed, I mean, he's even more unstoppable and healthy. Definitely a front runner for MVP. And with LeBron in his 40s, last couple years, a ton of nagging injuries and he's not going to play back to back. I would think the over under on games played in the regular season got to be like mid-40s. And I think the Lakers already are probably thinking let's make the playoffs top eight and have LeBron ready for the postseason. Yeah, I would limit his minutes. I think this could be a good thing. We talked about this yesterday. I want you fresh for the postseason. I always go back to the San Antonio spurs model. They didn't care about their regular season record. Greg Popovich couldn't care less. He wanted to make sure he had home court advantage to start and his guys were rested. That's what this is all about. Yeah, Marvin, the spurs don't get enough credit for the term load management. They were doing that. I don't want to give anybody credit, but I give them blame. But that's who deserves it. I know you're right. There was national TV games. Oh, the spurs are playing. No, they're not. Not Tim Duncan. Well, the spurs are playing, just not. The Stars are playing Jerry in Tampa. Good morning, Jerry. What's on your mind? Hey, good morning, guys. First time call. A long time listener. Six foot, 195, athletic, 52 years old. Yeah, I just want to make a comment on what you guys were saying about Michael Jordan giving up $1 billion to come back in the league at 30 years old. I'm going to talk to you in the sense of the business, Mike, and also the competitive mic. Okay. Age 30, he was the NBA MVP. NBA scoring champion, his third straight MVP, NBA championship, and he was the final MVP. Now, if he spent that $1 billion, he would probably triple his worth. From what we know about Mike now at 30 years old. Well, he only gets one year. That's what Paulie was saying. But he talked about that competitiveness, and you see it. Guys who play golf with him. He plays golf the way he played basketball. As far as trash talking, he wanted to put you in an uncomfortable position. He wanted to test you. And that's what he does in golf, you know, in business. I'm sure he's a competitor, but he's got all that money coming in now. Patrick in North Carolina. Hi, Patrick. What's on your mind? Good morning, D.P. good morning, Dan S. Love your show. I just want to comment on Michael Jordan and his competitiveness. I'm a big NASCAR fan and of course him and Denny Hammond, you know, they own a team together. And I watch Michael up in the pit boxes when he is there all season long. And I can still see the intensity on his face, as if he was on the court playing at times. Well, even when he goes, he does competitive fishing, deep sea fishing. He's got to have the best boat, the best crew, the best gear, all of that. That's what. That's who he is. You can't turn that off. Pete Rose couldn't turn it off. You know, a lot of these guys are looking for something. What is it? Because you can't play anymore. Gambling is always one that comes up. But then you got to find something else that you do that can bring you some kind of competition. I want to have that where I'm going against somebody or something. And that's what Mike wants. That's what he's searching for. Yeah, Paul. And when Michael reels in the marlin, he berates the marlin. He talks smack to the marlin. How dare you get caught. All right, we'll take a break. Even though they are such a powerful player in finance, you wouldn't really know that you are interacting with them. Hey, I'm Kalpen, and on my new podcast, Here We Go Again, we'll take today's trends and headlines and ask, why does history keep repeating itself? You may know me as the second hottest actor from the Harold and Kumar movies, but I'm also an author, a White House staffer, and as of like, 15 seconds ago, a podcast host. Along the way, I've made some friends who are experts in science, politics, and pop culture. And each week, one of them will be joining me to answer my burning questions, like, are we heading towards another financial crash? Like in 08, is non monogamy back in style? And how come there's never a gate ready for your flight when it lands, like two minutes early? We've got guests like Pete Buttigieg, Stacey Abrams, Lilly Singh, and Bill Nye. When you start weaponizing outer space, things can potentially go really wrong. Look, the world can seem pretty scary right now because it is. But my goal here is for you to listen and feel a little better about the future. Listen and subscribe to Here we go Again with Kal Penn on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Oh, my God. Of the day. This is the play of the day. Check this out. Ultimately, the Suns didn't get a shot on that. Off the draw, Wolman scores. Jake Bowman in his season debut, blisters home the winner. Final score, Edmonton 3, Ottawa 2 in overtime. Since the start of last season, The Oilers have 13 overtime wins, most in the NHL. That's courtesy of Sportsnet. And that's your play of the day. Play of the day, brought to you by Mako. Most cars on the road could use little tlc. That's what Mako does better than anybody. Everybody. They bring your car back to life. Affordable paint jobs like collision repairs, get a free estimate today. Oh, better get Mako. Vince in Austin. Vince, what's on your mind today? Hey, guys, good morning. Great show. It's been a while. If you want to talk about meddling owners who know business and not football, well, look around Dallas. We got Jerry Jones personifies everything. Everybody second kettle to him. Believe me, that what I really want to talk about is weeks. You talked about players playing themselves out of the hall of Fame. Yeah, and I think archmanning is Going across Peyton, Eli. This hurt, the whole thing. Well, Peyton's already in. Eli's going to be going. You know, I think everybody just jumped the gun on Arch because of, you know, the family lineage. He hadn't had that many starts. He didn't have great high school competition. But you realize that last name, and we're still waiting for that, the consistency. I thought he would be better because he has Steve Sarkeesian, former quarterback, and to be able to help him. They get a lot of weapons at Texas. So I thought, okay, it'll be a tough schedule, but I thought, you know, the, the smaller sample size that he showed last year, there were signs of wow, but we haven't seen it yet. It doesn't mean that we won't. But that's why I thought next year he's not going to the NFL. Said that from the beginning for a variety of reasons, he wouldn't be ready and probably would, you know, with the money he's making at Texas. Want to stay another year, but he does need to stay another year. Yes. Yeah. I was going to say I don't know football that well, but it feels like there's still time for him to figure it out. I'm not, I don't know, quarterbacking expert, but I feel like he still has time. No, this is where we want to. I got to have a hot take already. You know, I think. Yeah, you can't wait. What are you talking about? In today's media. He's got time to figure it out. So I could be wrong. No, no, you got till the end of the week and you got to make your declaration on Arch Manning. Yes, Paul. Yeah. And he didn't start as a freshman or a sophomore. They stuck with Quinn Ewers. It was a different path, but I went back and looked. Eli Manning, he really didn't play much as a freshman. Ole Miss and he was a big recruit, so they, they all ramped up. Curtis in Illinois. Hi, Curtis. Morning, D.P. just wanted to say your guys's shirt game recently has been kind of killing it between the pass hole and then I think it was Seaton that came up with the Flacco round and find out. But I kind of got a new business model idea for your T shirts. If you just keep doing them player related and maybe use the name and likeness a little bit more and you just do your limited run that you've been doing, you can like self cease and desist before you actually get the letter. Thank you, Curtis. I was going to ask if Curtis Was a lawyer. Yeah. He's trying to drum up some work for himself. Yeah. Curtis, we've been down that road before with Tom Brady. I don't want to go down that road again. But thank you. We appreciate that. Sean in Kansas. Hi, Sean. What's on your mind? Hey, guys, thanks for taking my call again. I actually have a bet for Fritzi. It's not your normal bet, though. Fritzi. Denver plays Dallas this weekend. I am not a Dallas fan, but I am a fan of content. If Denver wins, I'll take a pie to the face. If Dallas wins, you have to go see the Springsteen biopic and prove to everyone that you saw it somehow. Wow. So no pie to the face, but I need a ticket stuff. Well, I would need a time stamp that you're going to be there through the entire movie. Are you open to a bet with your Broncos against the Cowboys? Yes. Let's do that. Okay. All right. Sean, do we know the point spread for that? Is that game in Dallas? That game is in Denver. Oh, okay. So Denver is going to be favored by. I'm going to say three. Yes, Paulie. I have three and three and a half in a couple different places. Okay. All right. So Denver at home after that dramatic win against the Giants. And if you lose, you must go see the Jeremy Allen White portrayal of Bruce Springsteen. Yes, Paul, that movie's getting a lot of pub. Do you guys like those biopic movies, especially musicians like the Johnny Cash and so forth? I know Rami Malik won the academy award, but he didn't sing Freddie Mercury. He lip synced Freddie Mercury. That. Who was it? Taryn Edgerton. Edgerton, who did the Elton John biopic. He actually sang Elton John and had that come out before the Queen biopic, then he might have got nominated for an Academy award. But Rami Malek was just lip syncing and put in, you know, prosthetic teeth, and he got an Academy award. Jeremy Allen White from the Bear. I think he sings all the songs there in the movie, and it's based off of the album Nebraska, which is a pretty dark album when you think about it. But they did a movie or by. That's where you hear Academy award buzz, Oscar buzz. Dan in South Bend. Hi, Dan. What's on your mind? Hey, Dan. First of all, Fritz, I owe a pie to the face from a bet last year. I took two because the grandkids both wanted to give me one, but I'm gonna send that in. But the reason I called is I was at the show last week, Friday in South Bend was so awesome. But my favorite part was when you were interviewing the Notre Dame athletic director, and you must have read my mind because he was saying something about, oh, we want to, you know, play Michigan and usc, and you said, just join the conference. And he froze for, like, a split second. I thought I was going to get in trouble because I yelled out. I'm sure you couldn't hear me. But I was like, yes, yes. And the people around me were just looking at me. I loved it. I couldn't believe it, but I loved it. So. But it was great seeing you guys. And I just thought that was my favorite part of the whole show. Thank you, Dan. Pete Babaqua, and he's sharp guy, Notre Dame athletic director. But, you know, that's when he's telling me, we want to play usc. We want to play Michigan, and I go, well, then join the Big Ten. And then he paused for a moment. But I would love to see those rivalries. Look, they're important to me, but I grew up with them. You know, somebody who's 30 years of age, they may not care about that, but for me, I love the rivalries and. And I think we're losing those on a yearly basis. Conference realignment. Yeah. Paulie. Notre dame is facing Michigan 2023, 2034. Yeah. Hope I'm still alive. One hour in the books. Two more to go. We'll talk about the dysfunctional New York jets starting from top to bottom. Bottom of the division. Ross Tucker will join us and Don Mattingly will stop by as well. Get ready to power up your play with Nintendo Switch 2. This episode centers on the return of the NBA to NBC, headlined by Michael Jordan’s highly anticipated debut as an NBC analyst with a sit-down interview alongside Mike Tirico. Dan and the Danettes discuss the nostalgia of NBC basketball broadcasts, the impact and intrigue surrounding Jordan’s new media role, early NBA season takeaways (including performances from Luka Doncic, the Warriors, and OKC), and dive into NFL drama, with a focus on Jets owner Woody Johnson’s comments and the ongoing Sean Payton–Russell Wilson saga.
Woody Johnson goes on record critiquing his quarterback ("something's not jiving") and, by omission, supports his coach.
“It's hard when you have a quarterback with the rating we’ve got…something just is not jiving.” — Woody Johnson [1:14:00]
Dan is bewildered: “Why are you talking? …Just don’t say anything.” [1:16:40]
Concern that Johnson places blame on the QB rather than taking responsibility for franchise-wide dysfunction.
“We were hoping that that change [quarterback switch] would’ve happened long, long after our game.” — Payton [1:18:55]
“Classless, but not surprised. Didn’t realize you’re still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the media.” — Russell Wilson [1:19:30]

This episode celebrates the NBA’s return to NBC, with Michael Jordan stepping into the analyst spotlight—a move lauded for both sentimentality and sports wisdom.
