Now it feels like it sounds like it's been Described as being a health update press conference for Deon Sanders. And if you go back to 2021, he had two toes amputated. He had surgery for blood clots on his left leg in 2023. He got a little testy at the Big 12 media day earlier this month. When asked about his health issue, he downplayed that. He had comments espn, where he downplayed the health concerns. But he has sent out mixed messages, whether it's through one of his sons or a former player, Asante Samuel. And it feels like this is a very, very important press conference for Dion now. Important because maybe he can continue to be the head coach at Colorado. But there is also the possibility. There has been speculation, and that's why I'm going to be very careful when I say this, that maybe he's not able to coach again or maybe he would have to leave the sidelines and maybe coach in the press box. Once again, all of this speculation. Dion has downplayed his health issues, but there have been other people in his inner circle who have spoken about this. I'll go back to a Super Bowl. I think that was in Minnesota, in Minneapolis. And Deion took off his shoes and he took off his socks and he showed us his toes. He had turf toe. His toes were mangled up now. I don't know. Once again, they were. He. He had a couple of toes amputated and has blood clots as well. Just start there. The blood clots, that's serious. You know, we've seen that with athletes recently. We've seen that with athletes. Victor Ren Benyama with blood clots shut him down. So I don't know if this is going to impact Dion, impact him in a way that he wouldn't be able to coach or impact how he coaches. But that's probably going to be about three hours from now. So the show will be over when Deion holds this press conference. And from what I'm told, he will be holding a press conference with his medical team. This isn't a football press conference from the standpoint of let's talk about the Buffaloes in the upcoming season. This is about Deion Sanders. So we can only hope that it's positive news. There have been two websites that have already jumped to the conclusion that Dion will retire. Once again, I'm gonna just tell you about the speculation here, and there is no. It doesn't feel like there's any real hard facts that would lead me to believe one way or another what's going to happen with Dion. So Keep an eye on that. Hope for the best for Dion and as well, NFL camp. Not much going on. I did love that ESPN was at the commander's camp. And you want to talk about a whole different attitude of feeling when Daniel Snyder was there. It just felt like it was always a cloud over that franchise. You know, he's charging you to go to watch them practice. This just feels different now. They got Terry McLaurin back in camp, which is important, but it's a hold in. He still hasn't gotten his contract settled yet. But with Jaden Daniels, there's nothing like a franchise that has a quarterback where the fan base goes. Yes. And that's what you have with the commanders and. And once again trying to drive anything out of these training camps. I'm looking for the feel of it. I want. I want everybody in camp. I want to make sure everybody gets through camp and preseason without injuries. And you want to know what is the vibe there like? I'm still trying to figure out the vibe with the Steelers because of Aaron Rodgers, but you are all in. T.J. watt is in D.K. metcalf. Like you've. You've made some moves there and now you bring in Aaron Rodgers. Okay. But I still don't know what that vibe is because all of a sudden you have the Aaron Rodgers talking about Terry Bradshaw with what Terry Bradshaw said about Aaron Rodgers. And then once again, it's always these side stories that you're trying to avoid. You just want to go straight ahead, right down Main Street. You're not going to take the scenic route here. Just get through training camp. But the Commanders, man, you got to feel good about that. Got your coach showing up. You got his hat on backwards going on espn. The crowd's going crazy. Jaden Daniels comes over, he's saying hi to the kids like it was, hey, it here's a PR day for the Washington commanders. But it was fun to see. It was great to see. We're going to start off with this one NFL training camp with the most hope.

Hope. Okay.

Okay. Hope. Well, it feels like there's varying degrees of hope because if I start with the Panthers, what is the hope there? If I start with the Chargers, what's the hope there? Playoffs, AFC title games, super bowl, question mark. What is the hope that's hopeful? The Rams. The hope is Matthew Stafford can stay healthy because if he does, I think that they're going to Be in the playoffs and a legitimate threat. We saw what they nearly pulled off with the Eagles. What is the hope? The hope with the Eagles is let's just get through camp, let's stay healthy. The Bengals, the hope is that you get Trey Hendricks in it. So varying degrees of hope for an individual or hope for the team. You know, the Cowboys, I guess the hope would be that you clean up the Micah Parsons mess that you have. That continues. Are you looking at Team Seaton, you know, with the hope of their fan base of how they're going to do well.

Seton O'Connor (11:21)

Yeah. Why don't we start with. You started talking about the Commanders early this morning.

Right. A lot of hope right there.

Yeah, you got Mike Frable, great coach. You got your quarterback. Feels like there's a little momentum. Although don't you fall victim to the hype videos and shows that they put out with the Patriots?

Yeah.

Oh, I'm a sucker for any hype video. Yeah, yeah, I know. The Patriots have this thing out right now called like Forged in Foxborough, I think it is. And it is nothing but a 30 minute hype video. And you're like, mike Rabel might be.

Yeah. Every random dude they got like, look, and now Ali Shakatelli came in.

It feels like if they, they show anybody in slow motion that they automatically become great when you, you're showing these videos and you're seeing and it just feels like, you know, the announcer's voice goes down a little bit lower than that. Yeah. I don't care how sorry a team is, but if you see a highlight package right before they come out on the field, even though they're 0 and 14 and it's.

I can feel it coming in the. Oh, Lord. Speaking of. Well, the Raiders Pete Carroll head coach talking about his goals for his team. We have extremely high expectations. You know, I don't even know any other way to think. And I don't care what year it is or what team it is, it doesn't matter to me. I mean, this is either going for it or you're not and that's who going for it. And however that whatever that means at the end of it, we'll find out. But in the meantime, there is no, no standard that we can set high enough that we can't challenge for. And so we're going for it said and, and these guys are on board. They get it. Okay. They're going for it. Okay. Like they're hope worthy, you know, I mean you're in a really tough division, but yeah, there's hope. But that's the beauty of the NFL because all it takes is, hey, we could be this year's commanders. Well, you can't be. If you have Jaden Daniels, then maybe you could be this year's commanders. And can you win all of these one score games? Can you win in the last two minutes, which is what the commanders pulled off. But I love the feeling of hope with some of these teams like the Atlanta Falcons. Hope, but I just don't know. Like sometimes you have to go, okay, I got questions here and I got a hope here. So what, where, where, where's, where's it going? Does it level off there? That the questions and the hope, they're going to match each other and we're going to be okay? Yes, Marvin.

And the hope, the hope meter goes by how tough your division is.

Dan Patrick (14:20)

Yeah.

So if you're in the NFC south, you're like nine games. We can do this.

Dan Patrick (14:24)

Yeah. Also Arthur Blank, he is the owner of the Atlanta Falcons, talking about how he thinks we're going to eventually get to every team is going to play a game outside the United States, which I'm not big on exporting everything that we have. I don't like when baseball opens up in Japan opening day, but I do think it's fair if you're gonna, if you, you have to make it fair for everybody, a level playing field that, hey, you're going to be playing one or two games outside the United States. That team doesn't have to play any. I think they're trying to grow the game. I think that's why they're all in on flag football, because that can be played around the world. They're trying to grow the game. And I said this and I got this on good authority from somebody with the NFL. They're going to get to the 18th game. The 18th game is basically going to be a complete TV package, a separate TV package of you have the international games and that's how they're going to sell this. You're going to get to an 18th game. It may not happen, you know, over the next two years, but we'll get to 18 games. Every team will have a home base outside the United States. You know, Pittsburgh's going to be in Dublin. You're. You have team, you know, Germany for the Chiefs. You're going to have Brazil with the Eagles, maybe Mexico City. Everybody's going to have one of these places. The Jags in London. That's how they want to grow the game, export it. And then those cities, those countries will embrace that team. That will be their team. So it's not just Jacksonville's playing in London, but also you have owners who have soccer franchises around the world, and they're probably saying, hey, I can get my NFL team into my soccer stadium and get a couple of bites of the apple here. So this is what's going on. The question is, when does it happen? It's not if, but when. And when it does, they're going to make even more money because they'll sell this as a separate TV package.

Paul Pabst (16:31)

Yes, Paulie, one other team I would like to throw on the hope meter. How about the Denver Broncos? You know, they finally cleaned up their quarterback situation. Bo Nix, I know you got to get past the Chiefs, but hope? They haven't had hope in a couple of years.

Dan Patrick (16:49)

Felt like they overachieved last year.

Paul Pabst (16:51)

Oh, you're a hope killer.

Dan Patrick (16:54)

Don't be a hope killer.

Yeah, I didn't know what you're saying.

I'm going hope solo here. Yes. That I'm not all in with Denver and Washington, even though they got their quarterbacks and I like their coaches and the vibe is really good. It's just sometimes you look at a team and you go, how did they get to that many wins? And it's weird. I felt like the Broncos got to that win total maybe a little more legitimately than Washington did, but Washington came up big when they needed to. It's just. That's not sustainable. And I hate bringing this up, you know, but I do bring up the fact that they're winning these really close games in the final minute or so. It's really hard to continue to do that. Unless you're the Kansas City Chiefs. Yes, Todd, Is it a sophomore slump.

Commercial Voice (17:44)

Thing, or is it that you get figured out after the first year, now that there's video on these guys and adjustments are made, and all of a sudden they're not as shocking and surprised to see what they're going to do Year two?

Dan Patrick (17:52)

Yes, both of those. Thanks, toddlers. It's like the Texans. It just didn't feel like they were going to be better this past year with the previous year. And C.J. stroud was wonderful, but, man, it's tough that second year after you Surprise people. It's like when a pitcher goes through the lineup one time and all of a sudden he's like, man, I'm dominating. Then all of a sudden you go through the second time in the lineup and you don't make it all the way through. They get a book on you and you have to. Bo Nicks will have tells tendencies, you know, now it'll be different. The game plan will be different. And I think that's where you want to see this second year for a lot of these teams are quarterbacks. That's what, you know, Drake may do. You take the next step up. Do defenses figure you out a little bit more? It's a chess game. It's a constant chess game. All right, let me take a break. We got phone calls coming up. Best and worst of the weekend. What you saw that you liked, you didn't like. A lot of positive responses to Happy Gilmore 2. So thank you. No spoilers here. I hope you enjoy the movie. Didn't hear from a lot of people. And, you know, I hate to see maybe an Oscar worthy performance fall to the wayside, but, I mean, that'll be up to the Academy once again. That'd be weird, though, if I win an Academy Award, but I can't win a sports Emmy. Yes, yes.

Is there a minimum number of minutes on screen an actor has to have in order to be considered for an Oscar?

I think let's do a little research on that. But I will say a lot of people got one cameo. I didn't have one cameo like I had a role in this movie.

Recurring cameo.

Dan Patrick (19:55)

Yeah. Is that a new. No, it wasn't. It wasn't a recurring cameo because it, to me, it was a role like, you know, Chris Berman and Stephen A. Smith. It felt like that was a cameo. Mine was a role.

I was, Yeah. I was not playing myself. They were playing themselves. Once again, no spoilers. Yes.

There's a couple of really laugh out loud moments, and I thought, maybe I'm taking Seon's answer off. Off Mike. But it paid homage to the first. To the first Happy Gilmore, and it did what it's supposed to do.

Yeah, I loved it. I thought it was great. I think that it. It didn't try to compete with the original, which was a good idea. It was very much like a companion piece to the first one, and I thought it was hilarious. I really, really, really enjoyed it.

Yeah, I was nervous because it just Like, I knew too much about what was going on with the movie and who was in it and the storylines and all this. And I just thought, God, I just hope that it's a good movie. I just hope people enjoy it. And I. You know, even when I was talking to Sandler, like, I just didn't want us to try too hard that. Just let it. Let it happen. And, you know, the script that he came up with and the appearances, the cameos, I thought it worked. I thought it was entertaining. Now, granted, I'm biased because he's my friend and I'm in the movie, but judging from the reaction of people that I know, even that I don't know, it's been well received. Also, the fact that it's free and it's on Netflix, that helps, too. So you're not going to the theater and spending money? Yes, Paul, I did see some clips.

From the making of the movie this weekend, and it's. It's interesting that the golfers of today, the star golfers like Brooks Koepka or whomever, they grew up on this movie. This was the first golf movie of their lifetime. They're too young for Caddyshack, so Happy Gilmore. And to be invited in this movie was like. They lobbied to be in the movie. They didn't have to be coerced.

Dan Patrick (29:29)

Oh, yeah, they ask. I said this last week, Nick Faldo reached out and he said, hey, can you help me get a cameo? Jack Nicklaus is in it. Eminem's in it, like, Travis Kelsey. So they. They did a really good job. And I get nervous with cameos because then it feels like, hey, we're gonna give you a line or two, and then, you know, then we'll get another person, another line or two, yet reoccurring roles with these. A couple of these big names there. Yeah.

Seaton, even, like, Nick Faldo's great in it. Xander Shopley was hilarious. He was so funny. There's a lot of good cameos, sneaky ones, too, where I found myself laughing not only just at what the person said, but I, like, can't believe Sandler talked them into doing this.

No, it was not. I didn't have product placement and they're very, very aware of what you're wearing, if there's any logos. And I've been in a couple of movies where they actually gave me a watch that had no logo on it. But no, there was. I'm going to try to sneak this in. It's a, you know, a Panerai or a Rolex and maybe I could get, you know, free watches. But no, that. That was not part of my wardrobe. Yes.

And he said, and I think it was specifically about Shooter McGavin in that role. Like, I don't think I'm a jerk. Everybody else thinks I'm a jerk. And there was just something about that mindset of, like, when he's acting like that character, he's just beside himself that nobody else understands how absurd this is, that all of this is happening. Why are you people rooting for him? I'm the guy that you're supposed to root. I don't think I'm a jerk. Everybody else thinks I'm a jerk.

The joker, he owns a horse and he won a harness race and I don't know if I've ever seen anybody so emotional and excited before. He was definitely more excited than only one the title. Yeah, he was crying and my best Ichiro getting into the hall and I remember, I think it was his rookie season the MLB when a ball hit the dirt and came up and he actually got a single and then later said he practices that and I certainly don't put him with the magnitude of Kobe. Michael, you know, LeBron, Tiger. But when you're known by your first name, you know you're special. And my worst to the NFL finding those 100 guys for scalping their super bowl tickets for too much money. And a lot of ex players have come out and said they always used to sell their tickets. It just makes me, I don't know what the NFL's angle is, but it definitely makes me think that they're thinking this somehow is going to affect their popularity which in turn will affect their revenue.

Well, the ask when you look at the NFL price gouging you the customer but then they're going to scold the players for doing the same thing that they do and that is, you know, these ticket prices, I mean it's embarrassingly high. Something's got to get right. It's a trade deadline this week. We'll see who's a Dodger, who isn't by the end of the week, I guess. Best of the weekend. Best of the weekend. Last week, I made the joke about the MLB draft being the worst draft in the. In all sports. And then you had the MLB hall of Fame. I'm not saying it's the best hall of Fame, but what it got me thinking was that every year in the hall of Fame speeches, whether it's NBA, mlb, the NFL, hockey, whatever sport, we are given a blueprint of how to be the best in your prospective field. Now, I'm not saying I follow it, but it's incredible to hear these everyday guys. None of these guys go up there like, yeah, my dad's a billionaire. You know, I had the greatest trainers. I had the greatest. This great set. No, they go up there and they're like, it's because of this. Billy Wagner was up there making Jeff Bagwell cry because of how much he's like, you were the greatest teammate that I could have. And we are given so many great speeches, and I don't know if they're ever given the dude that. They've had some of the greatest speeches of all time in the hall of Fame. And that was. That, to me, was my best of the weekend, was watching these hall of Fame or listening to these hall of Fame speeches and everything like that. You boys have yourselves a great week.

Thank you, guys. I think the problem is with hall of Fame speeches is they're too long. And then you kind of. You want to thank everybody, but you know that. That's why I say less is more. You know, like the Miami Dolphins. My hope is that you are better because if not, then I wonder, you're going to move on from your head. Coach, can Tua stay healthy? I think he said one season that he stayed healthy. Tyreek Hill, is he there for the long haul? So it feels like there's a whole lot riding on the Miami Dolphins, North Carolina, Tar Heels, Bill Belichick's first year there. I think there were players and coaches asked if Bill Belichick's girlfriend or his relationship with this younger woman is a distraction, and they said no. Everybody said no, it wasn't. Who is going to say at North Carolina, one of your players or one of your coach is going to go, yeah, it's a distraction. I mean, really? And we ask everybody and we said, do you think it'll be a distraction? No, not at all. Wow, that's some really good reporting there. Okay, North Carolina, do they have how many games will be nationally televised?

Paulie Yeah, a couple different reports over the weekend said they're going to be have at least 10 nationally televised games in different day parts. They start the season, they host TCU on ESPN, the Big ESPN, September 1st, Monday night, 8pm Eastern. So that's a standalone before the NFL season starts. But then they have games against like ucf, Clemson, Cal, Virginia, Syracuse, Stanford, Duke, all of them are going to be floated to ESPN or some other national outlet.

Dan Patrick (51:08)

Okay. But here's my take on, you know, it's one thing to have Bill Belichick on the sidelines. He's not exciting. I just want to know, is your team any good? Because they can only show you so many times and then what are they really showing you? It's the same look that you had with Dion. Dion was animated. He had the shades on, had the beard gone. He had Travis Hunter, he had Shador Sanders. Now you had excitement there that, yes, Dion on the sidelines, you and then Colorado and the product they put on the field. How many times you tune in to see a coach and how long do you tune in to see that coach?

Paul Pabst (51:49)

Yeah, Paulie, I was thinking about this because when Dion took over Colorado, they were really bad. I think maybe 1 in 11 or 1 in 12. Do you think the average sports fan is rooting for a Bill Belichick to do very well or flame out.

Yeah, yeah. Because this. Now, there's a lot of things that are tied into this. Just from me on the outside looking in. You start with his relationship with this woman and what people will feel about that. You have the. Oh, the greatest coach of all time. And look what happened when Tom left. They were terrible. Oh, you. You're gonna bring your genius to college football. Okay, let's see what you got. So I think there's already that kind of. All right, let me see. Let me see what you got. You see how much of a genius you really are, because he was in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns, and that didn't go well. Like, we. We look at this and like, Spurier goes to the NFL, and we're like, okay, see what you got. And then it doesn't go well going from, you know, the NFL to college football. And it feels like every year we'll say something about a player at North Carolina. Like, they always. It feels like you got somebody who's going to be ranked pretty high. They're going to be. You know, they're going to be singled out. Drake May, man, I mean, they. They've had players down through history. And then you go, wow. Oh, Julius Peppers. That's right. He went to North Carolina. Lawrence Taylor went there. Did Albert Haynesworth go to North Carolina as well? Yeah. I mean, they've had these players. They just haven't had a great program. And now you got Bill coming in there, and I don't know what the over under is, but they were a bold team. I think two of the last three years with Mack Brown. They should be good. And you're in the acc. I don't think it's too hard to stand out. But gonna be a lot of North Carolina football. Yes, Marvin, North Carolina football.
