You are listening to the Dan Patrick show on Fox Sports Radio. Welcome to July and the Dan Patrick Show. Gang's all here. The Minister of Humor, Seaton Marv Polyers truly in the back room, guys, former Steeler head coach hall of Famer Bill Cower. A little bit later on we'll check in with the ESPN front office insider, Bobby Marks. He'll join us a little bit later on as well. NBA Free Agency now there wasn't a big deal, a major deal that you know, sometimes will overshadow the smaller deals. What happened yesterday was kind of the hall of Good. Now, that could be hall or H A U L the hall of Good, depending on. Thank you, Seaton. Hall of Good. Todd, you with us today?
Dan Patrick
I sure am.
Paul Pabst
All right.
Dan Patrick
All right.
Paul Pabst
Just don't be afraid to acknowledge.
Dan Patrick
90 seconds into the show. I'm not sure what I was supposed to say in the first 90 seconds. What am I missing?
Paul Pabst
Like a courtesy laugh or bloop or.
Dan Patrick
We got a long way to go.
Paul Pabst
We got 2 hours and 50 minutes. H A U L the hall of Good.

Stat of the Day brought to you by Panini America. The official trading cards of this godforsaken program. 8, 7, 7, 3, DP show email address dp@danpatrick.com Twitter handle @DP Show. Good morning. If you're watching on Peacock, that's our streaming partner. You get to see the look that I had on my face when Fritzi did that to me. This first hour, brought to you by Rapid Radio's official walkie talkie, the DP Show. Push to talk service. National LTE coverage. No subscriptions ever. Get them before bad weather occurs. Visit rapidradios.com for up to 60% off and free shipping. Poll question. Play of the Day. Stat of the Day. All of that forthcoming. So, a lot of moves, but nothing that's probably headline worthy. You know, Michael Porter Jr. III leaves the Nuggets. He goes to the Nets. And while they get a little older, they do free up some money. Cam Johnson comes from the Nets. Similar stats, but Johnson makes, I think, about 17 million less than Michael Porter Jr. III. So this is the start of, I think, another move for the Denver Nuggets. They bring back Bruce Brown, who was one of the instrumental players on that championship team a couple of years ago. The Mavs added d' Angelo Russell. This is basically a rental for year or half a year with Kyrie Irving being out. Clippers AD Brooke Lopez. Now, you gotta be careful when you say, oh, they got a big man. He's a tall man. I don't know if he plays necessarily like a big man. He became a very, very good three point shooter. And. And he does block shots on the defensive end. He does. As opposed to blocking shots on the offensive end. Dan, you're right. You got me there. The Hawks are. The Hawks are sneaky, man. Hawks are getting deeper. And I. My Hawks are Playing, you know, they're. They're playing for keeps now. The east is wide open. I mean, if you're. The Hawks go all in now. There's injuries there. So let's see. Maybe you can get back to the Eastern Conference finals. The Rockets. The Rockets are all in as well. Big loss for the Lakers. Dorian Finney Smith, they get him more, more depth there. I like what they're doing. I like what they're doing. So we'll talk a little bit more about that with free agency coming up. 877-3DP show will settle on a poll question and once again we'll have our play of the day coming up as well. Seaton, what's pull question? We're gonna go with first hour of the program.
Dan Patrick
Best day yesterday. Pittsburgh Steelers, Houston Rockets, Atlanta Hawks. Others.
Paul Pabst
Steelers. Rockets, Hawks, Hawks.
Dan Patrick
Other.
Paul Pabst
I'd say the Steelers. It feels like. I mean, I don't like giving up Mika Fitzpatrick. Jalen Ramsey's 34. John who? Smith. He had a really good year last year. But you already have a tight end. Can you have enough tight ends? How old is Jalen Ramsey? Paul?
Dan Patrick
He will be 31 when this.
Paul Pabst
31. Okay, so he's 31. Okay. He's going to be going against the Bengals, T. Higgins and Jamar Chase twice during the year. Okay. This already was a secondary that wasn't very good. I think they were like 25th in past defense. Then you got the T.J. watt situation as well. That's kind of just hanging there. At what point do you say we're at an impasse and we won't be able to do anything here? At what point do you say, do we want to give him $40 million a year? He's got one more year left and then he becomes an unrestricted free agent. What can you get for him? Would you dare trade T.J. watt? What if you. Now it won't happen, but I was just wondering this. How about the Bengals and Steelers make a trade? The Steelers get Trey Hendrickson and then their first round pick, Stewart, who I think is still unsigned. So now I got two edge rushers. Maybe Hendrickson cost me 30 million a year and then I get my first round pick in. Now I got a couple of edge rushers there and the Bengals then pay for T.J. watt. I give him $40 million. I'll hang up and listen.
Dan Patrick
Yes, Paulie, that does fix everything.
Paul Pabst
But the Bengals and Steelers aren't going to make them.
Dan Patrick
But if you both win a trade, you can trade in the division.
Paul Pabst
Yes, I guess ish I don't know, but I would. You know, we'll ask Bill Cower about this. At, you know, at what point do you say, can you just have him play out this year? And then you're going to lose him or risk losing him? You're all in on this year, this trade, bringing Ramsey in, Smith in. You got, you know, Aaron Rodgers, obviously, and DK Metcalf. The move like this is it. But is it? You're all in if you don't have T.J. watt in. So I would say the Steelers did pretty well yesterday, because when the. When the trade was announced, it was Jaylen Ramsey was traded to the Steelers, then all of a sudden she filled in, you know, the other stuff, and that is make a Fitzpatrick going to go to the Dolphins. And then you're also getting another weapon for Aaron Rodgers and John who Smith felt like that was a win, at least a temporary win for the Steelers. What other players? Anything else? You got teams in there, players in there, Any other poll questions there?
Dan Patrick
Yeah, Nikola Jokic had a pretty good day yesterday, too, actually. Yeah, I think so.
Paul Pabst
Sneaky, sneaky. Good day.
Dan Patrick
Maybe not as good as those other teams, but the Nuggets did a couple.
Paul Pabst
Of things that felt like they wanted to get rid of Michael Porter Jr. They did. Yeah, they did. Sure looked like it. By the way, the best odds According to DraftKings MVP, Joker plus 200. SGA plus 250. Then it's Giannis plus 700. And then it's my pick, Luca plus 800. Then Anthony Edwards, and then Victor Wembanyama. SGA is going to have a hard time going back to back. There'll be a little voter fatigue there. Maybe you'll see something different from Joker, although be tough to ask him to be better than he was last year, which was statistically the best season of his career. Giannis, you know, Giannis put up unbelievable numbers last year, but he just kind of graduated to that. Yeah, I know. Like the. Yeah, I know. Hey, I averaged, you know, 30, 12 and, you know, three block. Yeah, I know. But I think Luca, this is. This is Luca's year. And I think because he'll come back, he'll be in better shape. And I think it opens the door that Joker's already won his MVPs. SGA just won it. Giannis has a couple now. It feels like this is Luca's year to win it. Then after that, they're going to be like, you know, what's wrong? You ever going to win an mvp? You know, you Win the mvp, then they want to know when you're going to win a title. He already went to the NBA Finals, hasn't won an mvp, but I do think it's his year. Like, if I'm looking at the odds here, plus 800 for Luca, I'd probably put a dollar on that. But Giannis could be a comeback story of sorts for a team that will probably be trying to become an overachiever here. Maybe puts up even crazier numbers there. Wemby's going to put up great numbers. I don't think they're ready for him yet. Anthony Edwards. Yeah. Good numbers, I don't think. MVP numbers. Yes.
Dan Patrick
Marvin, Is Luca the Josh Allen of the NBA?
Paul Pabst
Yeah. Yeah. I think you could look at him and say, when are you going to graduate? And then Josh Allen finally won the mvp. Josh Allen hasn't been in a Super Bowl. Lucas at least gone to the NBA Finals. But, yeah, you can say that. And. And there's no reason why you can't win the MVP. But it's still tricky with the whole LeBron situation of. And their odds improved, by the way. The Lakers odds got better. I think it was. Let me see, I have it here. Their title odds moved to plus 1300. It was plus 1500. So, you know, maybe it's around the same. Although they. No, let me. Let me read it correctly. Lakers title odds move from plus 13 to plus 1500. So they got worse. Huh? Okay.
Dan Patrick
The Dorian Finney effect.
Paul Pabst
Yes, apparently. Well, are you going to get a big man here? And we're looking at what everybody else is doing, certainly what Houston is doing. And they were the number two seed. Denver making a couple of moves here. Their team's making moves, and the Lakers aren't one of them. Your move is. Okay, we just lost Dorian, Finney, Smith, and then Luca got in shape. We don't have a big man yet. Did we improve right now? No, but I don't know what move you're going to make. And it felt like there was more speculation yesterday after the show. Could they trade LeBron? Could they, you know, well, LeBron's got a no trade. And the thing I keep coming back to, and I don't think they're trading LeBron, I. It felt like it was just, hey, let's speculate on what if LeBron goes to Cleveland. Okay. If I'm LeBron, I've already said I'm not about chasing titles. It's not about titles. You know, you don't have to win. You know, the guy who has the most title. I'm paraphrasing him, but it's basically, it's not necessarily about titles. Well, it is, but he's not going to catch Michael. But let's say he would say trade me to Cleveland. Okay, what's Cleveland have to give up to get him? If you're LeBron, don't you. If you wanted to do something, you leave. You don't opt back in because you're going to take away players from the team. You're going to. He's not, he's not going to Cleveland for a year. Can't see it happening now. Next year maybe. Let's see what happens this year when he gets a healthy dose of this is Lucas team. Now I have to compliment him and see how that plays out. But I can't see him being traded. Somebody suggested to me yesterday, now, this is somebody who works with the team said, could you see LeBron on the Knicks? I go, what year is this? Like, they can't even find a coach yet. Could you see him? And what if he led them to a title? I go, okay, is he at the Boys and Girls Club in Greenwich, Connecticut, ready to make the decision? Okay, not now. He's not. He's not up. He's not moving. He's got his son. He's not moving. This is it. Just can't imagine he's going to go. You know, I'm going to leave and I'm going to. Now, granted, the east is open, wide open for at least a year, but I can't see that happening. Once again, late June, early July. It's really dangerous in this business. We're like, what are we talking about today? How about Dax Legacy? How's your door? Sanders driving? Yeah.
Dan Patrick
I went back and looked at the stats. Last year, Luka averaged 28 points, eight rebounds, seven and a half assists. And you talk about taking Giannis for granted. Giannis averaged 31 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists and a block and a half.
Paul Pabst
Those are incredible numbers.
Dan Patrick
His numbers are haven't dipped in any way. His, his scoring numbers have steadily gone up since 2019. He doesn't shoot threes anymore. He's shooting threes at his lowest rate of his entire career.
Paul Pabst
For a guy who can't shoot, I mean, he's the ultimate scorer. He's not a good shooter. And I kept thinking, if he ever gets that 15 foot jump shot, he'll average whatever he wants to average. Because to me, you know, he's, he's Wemby before Wemby. I mean, he came along and you're like, oh, my gosh, we haven't seen anybody like that. I thought Anthony Davis would be more like Giannis and that's never going to materialize. But you look at what Giannis does and how he does it. Not on a good team. You know what he's going to do. Doesn't have too many signature moves there. Yes, Martin.
Dan Patrick
So was Wemby the super freak.
Paul Pabst
Oh, okay. He could be. He could be Todd super freak.
Dan Patrick
He's a very kinky girl. Cause you don't bring him to my d. Hi, Fritzy.
Paul Pabst
The show started. Yeah. Oh, I'm on.
Dan Patrick
I'm on 15 minutes delay, but I just pressed the. The button.
Paul Pabst
Now Marvin knows what I have to deal with here.
Dan Patrick
That's how it's going to be today.
Paul Pabst
Yes. Paul. Wow.
Dan Patrick
Real quick before we break, Luca. I'm sorry. Giannis, the past three seasons, 30 plus points, 11 plus rebounds, three years in a row. Do you think anyone else has ever done that in the modern era? 80s on, not the Kareem days gone.
Paul Pabst
30 and 11. 11, 11, 11.
Dan Patrick
Right back to Fritzi.
Paul Pabst
30 and 11 three years in a row.
Dan Patrick
We're checking.
Paul Pabst

I know a lot of cops and they get asked all the time, have you ever had to shoot your gun? Sometimes the answer is yes. But there's a company dedicated to a future where the answer will always be no. Across the country, cops called this Taser the Revolution. But not everyone was convinced it was that simple. Cops believed everything that Taser told them from Lava for good and the team that brought you Bone Valley comes a story about what happened when a multi billion dollar company dedicated itself to one visionary mission. Quietly listen. And all that stops here. If you like witty women, then this is your tribe with guests like Corinne Stephens. I've never seen so many women protect predatory men. And then me too happened, and then everybody else want to get pissed off because the white said it was okay. Problem. My oldest daughter, her first day in ninth grade and I called to ask how I was doing. She was like, oh, dad, all they were doing was talking about your thing in class. I ruined my baby's first day of high school. And Slumflower, what turns me on is when a man sends me money. I'm Bridget Todd, host of the tech podcast There Are no Girls on the Internet. On this new season, I'm talking to the innovators who are left out of the tech headlines, like the visionary behind MoviePass, Black founder Stacey Spikes, who was pushed out of MoviePass, the company that he founded. His story is wild, and it's currently the subject of a juicy new HBO documentary. We dive into how culture connects us. NBA title odds for next season. It's the Thunder a wide margin over the second favorite, the Rockets. So the Thunder plus 2. 25. The Rockets plus 7. 50. Cavs plus 8. 50. Same as the Knicks. Then it's the Nuggets, the Timberwolves, and then the Lakers. Joker is your favorite slight favorite over SGA to win the MVP next year, followed by Giannis Luca and Anthony Edwards and Victor Wembanyama. Couple of things about the Pittsburgh Steelers, when you think about how they've operated, they operate like a small market franchise. They draft well, they keep their coaches, they have consistency, respectable win totals, playoff appearances, the culture of stability, all of those great things. But in the last decade, that also defined their ceiling. That ceiling just got smashed. It feels like the last couple of days because you got Aaron Rodgers, DK Metcalf, Jalen Ramsey, John who Smith. This is a different Steeler approach here. And it felt like. And feels like they needed to do this because Baltimore's better. Cincinnati is going to have a very interesting offense to deal with. The Browns are not going to get it right anytime soon. But you're thinking about more than just your division. This is a team that wins a franchise, that wins championships. You can't even win a playoff game. So you bring in these players and you still have TJ Watt with one more year on his deal. He's the same age as Aaron Donald was. Van Donald got his contract extension, but he won a Super Bowl. He was. He was the best player, best defensive player in the league. So Rogers is 40. Ramsey's health is a question. And they have got some big money gambles here. And you pull off a trade like this, could be worth it, could be fun. I mean, it's going to be fun. It'll be interesting. But the question is, can you make the playoffs? Can you win games when you get to the playoffs? Like, it's weird to say the goal is, hey, let's get to the playoffs and win a playoff game, but really that's where your goal should start. Because like, everybody's goal is to win the Super Bowl. But you got to be realistic here. Can we win? Can we get to 11 wins? Can we get a first round home game? Can we go on a run? Can Aaron stay healthy? TJ Watch Watts situation, Jalen Ramsey. You got Darius Slay, who's 34 years of age, trying to chase down Jamar Chase. I don't know. Yeah, Paulie.
Dan Patrick
It feels like possibly the Steelers management has heard the criticism Maybe the national criticism has joined in with the local criticism because they're one of the least criticized franchises in sports.
Paul Pabst
Nationally.
Dan Patrick
Nationally.
Paul Pabst
Locally, they do.
Dan Patrick
Locally, they're frustrated. But, you know, you don't get the hall pass forever. And it feels like this is very reactionary, maybe in a good way, by the Steelers.
Paul Pabst
Yeah, but you still. The T.J. watts situation, do you want to spend. Give him $40 million, but you got one more year, and then if you're going to add to that, are you going to give him three years? 120 million, $125 million? Do you want to do that? What's your option? Trey Hendrickson has better sack numbers than TJ Watt recently, but Trey Hendrickson, I don't know what. You know, it's the Bengals dealing with the Bengals, trying to get a contract extension or get money. You know, you know, you. You think that you've earned the money that would be coming to you. They don't want to pay you for what you did. They want to pay you for what they think you'll do. And this is the hard part. For Trey Hendrickson, it's like, look what I did. The Bengals are like, yeah, we know. Can you do that? Continue to do that? And what's he got, 35 sacks over the last two years. Okay, I did my job, but management's be like, okay, now what are you going to do for us? Do you want to pay for what you think they're going to do? NBA is different. Feels like, all right, you put up some good numbers. Here you go. By the way, Jaren Jackson Jr. III got paid by the Grizzlies. I really. I thought he was going to be the best player in this draft. I did. And he might turn out to be. You know, I'm holding out. I'm playing the long game here. Is he going to be better than Luca in the long haul or Trey Young? But he got paid, and it feels like, you know, Memphis is sort of meh. Mid. They went from being kind of the cool kids to then all of a sudden middle. Everybody else is moving. Feels like everybody's moving, doing something. Now. You want to keep Jaren Jackson Jr. He's a very good player on both ends of the floor. Yes. Paulie.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, he's been first team, all defense a couple times. He's also 25 years old, averages 23, 5 and 5.
Paul Pabst
All right.
Dan Patrick
You're going to get paid.
Paul Pabst
That's okay.
Dan Patrick
It's the window of time. Like, if T.J. watt were 27, he'd get the biggest contract in defensive end history. He'd be Crosby. But when you're 30 to 31, it. It just changes your window a little bit.
Paul Pabst
Yeah, I mean, his numbers were good. What do you have? 11 and a half sacks.
Dan Patrick
Last year he did lead the league in forced fumbles as well. That's a big one.
Paul Pabst
Okay. I like hurries. I like hurries. That's why. That's why I love Max Crosby. Because if you're hurrying the quarterback, you're in the backfield a lot and you might get 12 sacks, but if you get 21 hurries, that to me affects the game more. Well, at least in my opinion. That guy is constantly in the backfield. Yes.
Dan Patrick
Paul Hurries is not an official NFL stat yet. There's a bunch of stat sites.
Paul Pabst
Yes.
Dan Patrick
That have it, but it's not on the football reference. Would you be in favor of me?
Paul Pabst
Yes. Yes. I have so many causes. Right.
Dan Patrick
You could be Mr. Hurry.
Paul Pabst
I think, but I don't know what denotes a hurry. Like, how do you. How do you decide what's a hurry?
Dan Patrick
Checking.
Paul Pabst
So the language would be a little tougher in trying to figure that out. It's like, oh, oh, go. That's a hurt. No, no, he didn't get there long. You know, it's like when you're trying to pin somebody in wrestling. No, that's. No, didn't pin him. Oh, that's not a hurry. Max Crosby has to lead the league in hers.
Dan Patrick
I have it for 2024, and he did.
Paul Pabst
Okay, there's still.
Dan Patrick
Maybe they're still putting together for 2025. Checking.
Paul Pabst
Well, wait, isn't this 2025 going back to that?
Dan Patrick
They don't have it for last season. They have it for the previous season. Max Crosby led the league in her. He said 23:24. He led in hurries.
Paul Pabst
Okay, so the 24:25 season, we don't have. What are they waiting around for? But, like, really.
Dan Patrick
Yes, Todd, I see some good words salad about the definition of a hurry, but it does not speak to the fact of how you time that. Exactly. And it seems like a very subjective thing that an official or someone keeping the books would have to come up with.
Paul Pabst
Thank you, John.
Dan Patrick
Welcome.
Paul Pabst
All right, see, do you have a poll. Do you have a poll question today?
Dan Patrick
Yeah, we got one up there right now. Better day yesterday or best day yesterday.
Paul Pabst
All right, Steelers, Rockets, Hawks.
Dan Patrick
Right now, the rockets got about 48% of that vote. Hawks and Steelers about 25ish each.
Paul Pabst
Maybe. I just like that there was a big Trade in the NFL that normally you don't get those big moves. And here at the end of June as well. We knew Ramsey was going to be traded. I thought he was going to go back to the Rams, but, you know, give credit to Pittsburgh. They really wanted him. But you have to give up, make a Fitzpatrick, but you also get another tight end in the process. Yes.
Dan Patrick
Jonathan Smith has been on like nine teams in eight years.
Paul Pabst
Something like that. I know as much as we want to go, hey, they got a really good tight end. He had a really good year last year. I don't know if he's a really good tight end, but I know he had a really good year. Yes, Paul.
Dan Patrick
All right, I have. Max Crosby did was the fourth in the league last year in hurries, according to one stat site. Micah Parsons is up there, Miles Garrett is up there, Watt is up there. All the usual.
Paul Pabst
Okay. All right.
Dan Patrick
All right. Still not an official stat with the NFL.
Paul Pabst
I know. Yeah, but they didn't have sacks as an official stat until, what, 1982? Don't you think they could go back all the films? NFL films? Come on. Because you're gonna find, like, with Wilt Chamberlain's block shots or Bill Russell's block shots where they average probably nine or ten a game. You know, it's gonna change the record books. You're gonna go back and you're gonna see Deacon Jones with the Rams. You're gonna go, oh, my God, that guy probably had 300 sacks back when you weren't throwing the ball, you know, 25, 30, 35 times. You think the NFL of all these leagues would have the data there, the archival footage, to be able to do that? Eric in Cincinnati. Hi, Eric. What's on your mind today? Hey, Dan. Huge Cincinnati Bengals fan. Here the tray.
Dan Patrick
You mentioned something earlier on the show.
Paul Pabst
About the Trey and T.J. watt situation.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, I would trade Trey all day for tj. Two different players.
Paul Pabst
Trey gets the sacks done. But tj, you can almost play him anywhere outside linebacker.
Dan Patrick
Trey's not going to do that.
Paul Pabst
And for the money, Trey's a little bit older on the back end of the contract.
Dan Patrick
I would take that trade all day, being a Cincinnati Bengals fan.
Paul Pabst
Oh, yeah, but you're not getting that straight up. Pittsburgh's not going to trade tj. Watch. I'm just saying, if they threw in Stewart, their first round pick, is he still out of camp? Kid out of Texas A and M. Shemar Stewart. Remember you said he wasn't going to show up.
Dan Patrick
He left the OTAs and then the Camp is in a couple weeks old.
Paul Pabst
Yeah, yeah, but I mean, Cincinnati is not. Yeah. If I'm a Bengal fan, you get TJ Watt for Trey Hendrickson. Of course you'd take that. I'm saying you could throw in Stewart in this. Now all of a sudden, at least you have a conversation, you can save money. But it's not going to happen. I'm just throwing it out there of who is going to give you enough to trade for TJ Watts? Do you really want to trade him and how much are you willing to pay him? Because it feels like with one year left, is he going to want three years after that? And we know with the, you know, with the contracts in the NFL, it's not like, you know, this is all guaranteed the way it is with NBA, Major League Baseball. But do you want to sign him up for this year and then three years after that, which would put him at around 35, 36. That sound about right, Paulie?
Dan Patrick
Exactly.
Paul Pabst
Yes. Okay, let's see, what else do we have?
Dan Patrick
I have a little bit here on Deacon Jones. They tried to go back and look the NFL hall of Fame and the NFL films went back and they tried their best to look at his Deacon Jones, the great 60s sack leader. They didn't have sex and they said he'd probably be at 245 sacks, rough estimate, which would make make him by far number one of all time. They also found out the origin of the word sack was during a production meeting with a Cowboys Rams game in the six late 70s. And they were talking to Merlin Olson of the Rams and he was talking about tackling the quarterback for a loss. And he's talking about Craig Morton, the quarterback of the Cowboys at the time. He said, we're going to take Morton and pour him into a sack. And they laughed about it. And the term was used on the broadcast the next week. And that's they think is the way the term was born.
Paul Pabst
And Merlin Olsen was on the fearsome foursome with Deacon Jones.
Dan Patrick
Correct.
Paul Pabst
Became a great broadcaster many, many, many years with Dick Enberg. Yep. John in Oregon. Hi, John. What's on your mind today?
Dan Patrick
Hey, Dan, thanks for the call.
Paul Pabst
Hey, we were talking. You were just talking about how, how to quantify a defender rushing the quarterback. One way to do that would be to once the defender gets past the offensive blocker, as long as the quarterback.
Dan Patrick
Still has the ball. That would be one way to quantify it.
Paul Pabst
Yeah. You know, there I'm looking at this breakdown. It says if you hurry the passer to an Inaccurate or incomplete pass, the quarterback moves off their spot in the puck. You know, this to me is. We're going to add more language to this and make it even worse. So maybe we shouldn't have hurries as a stat. Yes.
Dan Patrick
Pauline, isn't this. I know it when I see it. If I'm watching Joe Burrow go back, he sets up and Max Crosby comes in and Joe has to pull the ball down and move. That would should count as a hurry, I guess.
Paul Pabst
See, the NFL never simplifies. They're going to add language to this. Yes.
Dan Patrick
The NFL is not a I know it when I see it league. If it was, then catches wouldn't be a problem. They're not. And I know when I see it, they're a. It has to fit. Check down these five boxes in order for it to be the thing we all think it is.
Paul Pabst
Do I dare ask Fritzi to email the NFL?
Dan Patrick
I already did. I was hesitant to do that. I have a feeling I'm gonna get a slow news day, guys.
Paul Pabst
Can you. Can you give me. Tell me what you said in the email.
Dan Patrick
All right.
Paul Pabst
Good morning.
Dan Patrick
Is there an official NFL definition for a hurry? How much discussion has there been to make the hurry an official NFL stat?
Paul Pabst
And how subjective might that be to.
Dan Patrick
Determine what constitutes a hurry?
Paul Pabst
For the record books, we were talking.
Dan Patrick
About TJ Watt, Trey Hendrickson and others. Appreciate it. Thank you for your time.
Paul Pabst
You imagine you walk into the office, you got your coffee, you got there at 9 in the morning, all of a sudden, turn on your computer. Easy day here.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Paul Pabst
Oh, Todd Fritz. Click on that. Yes.
Dan Patrick
Right. The amount of people who just look at their inbox and see. But, you know, the crazy part isn't that it's the NFL doing that. It's probably two dozen other people also doing it. From a million other requests Todd has.
Paul Pabst
Made to this morning already. Yes.
Dan Patrick
Including the guys I actually work with here every day are doing it. So imagine the people on the outside, they're ready to go.
Paul Pabst
Deleted.
Dan Patrick
I'll take a quick skim at this. Maybe.
Paul Pabst
Jason in Trinity. Hi, Jason.
Dan Patrick
Good morning, guys. How you doing?
Paul Pabst
Good.
Dan Patrick
Just wanted to talk a little bit about the. The way they search for NBA players.
Paul Pabst
To give the bag to.
Dan Patrick
And it's kind of weird how, you know, back in the 80s, 90s and 2000s, you would have your star player, maybe one or two on a team. Those guys get paid. The rest of them, they take the minimums or whatever. And now it seems to where they're giving the bag away and the commissioner Says that the WNBA is at a deficit. Well, how do you have three new teams coming when you're running a deficit?
Paul Pabst
So where are we going?
Dan Patrick
And how can they afford to sustain business and do this? I mean, are these streaming deals that good to where they can just, you know, create three new teams and two years time?
Paul Pabst
Yeah, the WNBA is going to expand, but I think they're expanding in one city and then it's going to be a couple of cities after that, a couple of years down the road. And I'm, you know, they. They already have the financial pie. It feels like split up here. You know, these leagues don't want to bring in another team and have to share. Just like the NBA. They're going to talk about expansion. Well, that huge TV deal or the TV deals they sign. Now, you do have to spend money, the expansion fee to get in. But these owners don't like it when they have to divvy up the pie. But Detroit is going to add, and I think they're trying to add WNBA teams in cities where you have NBA teams. So therefore you already have an arena to use. Yes, Eden, that is one of those.
Dan Patrick
Weird things, too, that happens in business all the time where a company is not profitable. They operate at a deficit, and they're like the hottest stock on the stock market. Like some bed company or like, you.
Paul Pabst
Know, this all the stationary bike thing.
Dan Patrick
That'S like, they haven't made money ever.
Paul Pabst
But I'm buying.
Dan Patrick
How are you? What? And you're expanding and you've never made any money.
Paul Pabst
How?
Dan Patrick
Why?
Paul Pabst
Well, you have the Gretzky effect on the NHL that you probably had teams that weren't making a profit, but cities wanted to have a hockey team, maybe Beckham as well, that you're going, hey, we want to have our team. And then you operate at a deficit. I'm sure there's all kinds of tax breaks there as well. I don't think anybody buys a team and loses money. It's really hard to do that. But WNBA is going to expand. Let's see. Fritz, he just sent me. So Toronto 2026, Portland 2026. Cleveland 2028. Detroit 2029. Philadelphia 2030. Yes, Marvin.
Dan Patrick
And I love that the fact that Cleveland and Detroit already had WNBA teams.
Paul Pabst
Yes.
Dan Patrick
And they got rid of them now.
Paul Pabst
All right, we'll bring you guys back. Yeah. Yes, Don.
Dan Patrick
And what takes five years for Philadelphia to get the team together? Maybe I don't understand how complicated it is to get an organization going.
Paul Pabst
I don't know if you just want to kind of spread it out a little bit there. I'm sure they have a business, you know, they have a PowerPoint presentation here to tell you all the. But it's the Caitlin Clark effect. Like, it's just like Gretzky, Gretzky came to LA and then all of a sudden the United States, Southern states, they wanted to have their own team because of Wayne. That's the same thing with Caitlin Clark. Yes.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, Beckham's a good example. They were there was 13 teams in MLS when he arrived. Now I think there's over 25.
Paul Pabst
All right, we'll take a break. Play of the day. Up next, be sure to catch the live edition of the Dan Patrick show, weekdays at 9am Eastern, 6am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.

The play of the day.
Dan Patrick
This is the play of the day.
Paul Pabst
Check this out. High drive way back there toward the triangle. Frito racing back. And that one is going to be off the wall that's going to keep on rolling in the warning track. Here comes William rounding forward. He's trying to score, looking for an inside to Parker. He dives in with an inside the park home run on a perfect spot out there, 8 to 4. That's courtesy of Nessen Abreu is the sixth player in baseball history to hit a grand slam and also hit an inside the park home run in the same game. The last player to do it, Roger Maris in 1958. I didn't remember Roger Maris being fleet of foot there, but a grand slam in an inside the park home run.
Dan Patrick
He's in good company.
Paul Pabst
Thanks, Todd.
Dan Patrick
We love to say people are in good company.
Paul Pabst
It's our play of the day, brought to you by Mako. Most cars on the road could use a little tlc. They bring your car back to life. Affordable paint jobs, light collision repairs. Get a free estimate today. Oh, better get Mako, our good buddy, the big dumper. Cal Raleigh did it again. 33 home runs now. Only two players have hit more home runs through the end of June than the big dumper. Barry bonds and Mark McGuire. Stat of the day brought to you by Panini America. The official trading cards. The program yes, Todd, does that mean.
Dan Patrick
The big dumper's got a drug test waiting for him at the end of.
Paul Pabst
The fifth inning in an upcoming game? Can you say that the guy who is the the cleanest to hit that this many home runs before the end of June Because Bonds and Maguire both under suspicion.
Dan Patrick
I think we got to put that little thing in there.
Paul Pabst
Yeah, but then you never know. Like I hope Cal Raleigh, the big dumper is is clean here. I think the Giants are going to erect a Barry Bonds statue. Yes, they are.
Dan Patrick
They announced it. Let me see when it's happening.
Paul Pabst
Okay, they've got a few statues. They might lead the league in statues. Don't they have like Marichell and Cepeda and Bonds and Maze? Yes, Marvin, the Lakers have a few statues also. Do they have more statues than the Giants?
Dan Patrick
Checking.
Paul Pabst
Okay, I remember seeing the Willie May statue right out front. What's the name of the stadium now? What phone company is it Pac Bell? Is it mint or at&t?
Dan Patrick
Oracle.
Paul Pabst
Oh, Oracle. Oh, that's right.
Dan Patrick
They have five statues right now outside Oracle.
Paul Pabst
Okay, so you got Maze, McCovey, Cepeda, Marichella. Who am I missing?
Dan Patrick
Pitcher Tim Linseck, wild hair.
Paul Pabst
Madison, Gaylord Perry.
Dan Patrick
Oh, okay, that's surprising.
Paul Pabst
Five statues, that's a lot. Yes, yes, yes. Marvin.
Dan Patrick
The LA Lakers have six.
Paul Pabst
Oh, all right.
Dan Patrick
It's not official.
Paul Pabst
Bonds is going to be there. So that's six now. Yes. Point.
Dan Patrick
It's not official. Bonds is getting a statue. The Giants president on a radio station said it's on the radar and he's definitely deserving of it.
Paul Pabst
Yes, Todd.
Dan Patrick
And it's not clear when and where.
Paul Pabst
Oh, okay. Clean. I got it.
Dan Patrick
Throwback on that one.
Paul Pabst
Thank you, Todd. I look, if Giants fans, he's yours and you want to celebrate him, great. Nobody else is. But hey, go ahead, knock yourself out. He's your guy. Anybody have a problem? Giants, you know, given putting a statue up of Bonds, they already would. They already forgave and probably forget like they don't care. It's like so what? Yes, Todd, I think you erected at.
Dan Patrick
Your own asterisk and see what people reaction are as they're okay.
Paul Pabst
All right, Paulie, you have a problem with this?
Dan Patrick
Is it necessary?
Paul Pabst
I don't know. Do. Are any statues necessary?
Dan Patrick
Well, it's fair to say Barry Bonds did a lot of great things that are completely under dispute.
Paul Pabst
Did Pittsburgh give him a statue? Does Bonds have a statue in Pittsburgh?
Dan Patrick
It'd be pretty awesome if they did though. They're like, hey, this is the good version.
Paul Pabst
This is like.
Dan Patrick
This is the version you're allowed to.
Paul Pabst
We had him. Yeah. That's what he looked like when he played for us. Yeah. I don't know what you got, but that's what he looked like. I don't know. Does Pittsburgh have a statue out there? Yes.
Dan Patrick
I'm becoming more and more of the belief that no statues are a good idea. Never put statues up. Never name anything after anybody.
Paul Pabst
Don't put a name on a building.
Dan Patrick
Don't put a name on a building. Don't put a name on a trophy. Don't put a name on a statue. Don't build a statue. Don't do anything for anybody. Don't do it. If you want to hang their jersey up, okay. But other than that, don't do it.
Paul Pabst
Roberto Clemente, I'm fine with a statue in Pittsburgh. Or Willie Stargell, I'm fine with that. But you're right, you put up that statue, who knows? It might be ready to take it down. It might be a hundred years from now. Yeah. Somebody will say, you know what that guy did? No. Bill Cower will join us in 20 minutes from now. Hour two on the way. Dan Patrick show.

Podcast Summary: The Dan Patrick Show – Hour 1 – Steelers All-in, This Is Luka Dončić’s Year
Release Date: July 1, 2025
Host: Dan Patrick
Network: iHeartPodcasts and Dan Patrick Podcast Network
In this episode of The Dan Patrick Show, Dan Patrick engages in a dynamic discussion with co-host Paul Pabst and recurring guests, delving deep into current NFL and NBA developments. The conversation covers significant trades, player performances, MVP race predictions, and extends into broader topics like the evolution of defensive statistics in the NFL and the expansion of the WNBA.
Steelers' Recent Trades and Team Dynamics
Dan Patrick and Paul Pabst kick off the discussion by analyzing the Pittsburgh Steelers' recent trades, particularly the acquisition of Jalen Ramsey.
Dan Patrick (06:07): "Best day yesterday. Pittsburgh Steelers, Houston Rockets, Atlanta Hawks. Others."
Paul Pabst (06:14): "Steelers. Rockets, Hawks, Hawks."
They debate the implications of trading key players like TJ Watt and the potential impacts on the Steelers' defense.
Paul Pabst (06:19): "How about the Bengals and Steelers make a trade? The Steelers get Trey Hendrickson and then their first-round pick, Stewart, who I think is still unsigned. So now I got two edge rushers."
The conversation highlights concerns about the Steelers' high-risk, high-reward strategy, especially regarding TJ Watt's contract and health.
Dan Patrick (26:30): "It feels like possibly the Steelers management has heard the criticism... they need to do this because Baltimore's better."
Luka Dončić’s Potential MVP Year
Transitioning to the NBA, the hosts discuss Luka Dončić's impressive performance and his chances of securing the MVP title this season.
Paul Pabst (15:51): "His numbers have been incredible... I think it's Luka's year."
Dan Patrick counters with historical comparisons, questioning if Luka can surpass established players like Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Dan Patrick (15:36): "I went back and looked at the stats. Last year, Luka averaged 28 points, eight rebounds, seven and a half assists."
MVP Odds and Predictions
The hosts examine the odds of various players winning the MVP, with Luka emerging as a strong contender alongside Nikola Jokic and Giannis.
Dan Patrick (11:39): "Jake is going to have a hard time going back to back... my pick, Luka plus 800."
Paul Pabst (16:43): "He's like Wemby before Wemby. You're allowed to..."
Quantifying Defensive Pressure
A significant portion of the discussion focuses on the concept of "hurries" in the NFL and their potential as an official statistic.
Dan Patrick (29:02): "Max Crosby did was the fourth in the league last year in hurries..."
Paul Pabst (36:25): "If you hurry the passer to an inaccurate or incomplete pass... it affects the game more."
They debate the subjectivity of defining a hurry and advocate for its official recognition to better capture defensive prowess.
Dan Patrick (30:38): "It's a very subjective thing that an official or someone keeping the books would have to come up with."
Exploring the 'Sack' Terminology
Dan and Paul delve into the history of the term "sack," tracing its origins back to Deacon Jones and Merlin Olsen.
Dan Patrick (35:15): "They tried to go back and look at Deacon Jones... the term was used on the broadcast the next week."
Paul Pabst (36:08): "Merlin Olsen was on the fearsome foursome with Deacon Jones."
This segment provides fascinating historical context, highlighting how language in sports evolves alongside the game itself.
Growth and Financial Sustainability
The conversation shifts to the expansion of the WNBA, addressing how the league plans to sustain new teams despite operating deficits.
Dan Patrick (39:09): "How can they afford to sustain business and do this? Are these streaming deals that good?"
Paul Pabst (40:47): "They're expanding in cities where you have NBA teams... Detroit is going to add, and I think they're trying to add WNBA teams in cities where you have NBA teams."
They discuss strategic placements and the influence of high-profile figures like Caitlin Clark in driving the league's popularity.
Paul Pabst (42:05): "It's the Caitlin Clark effect. Like, Gretzky came to LA and then..."
Debating Legacy and Recognition
Dan and Paul debate the appropriateness of erecting statues for controversial sports figures like Barry Bonds.
Paul Pabst (50:16): "The Giants are going to erect a Barry Bonds statue."
Dan Patrick (53:00): "It's fair to say Barry Bonds did a lot of great things that are completely under dispute."
They examine the tension between honoring athletic achievements and addressing ethical controversies.
Dan Patrick (53:35): "Don't put a name on a building. Don't build a statue. Don't do anything for anybody."
Nessen Abreu's Unique Achievement
The show highlights an extraordinary baseball play where Nessen Abreu hits a grand slam and an inside-the-park home run in the same game.
Paul Pabst (48:13): "He dives in with an inside the park home run on a perfect spot out there, 8 to 4. That's courtesy of Nessen Abreu..."
Dan Patrick (49:07): "He's in good company."
This rare feat places Abreu in the same league as Roger Maris, emphasizing his exceptional athleticism.
Dan Patrick and his co-hosts provide a comprehensive analysis of pivotal moments in both the NFL and NBA, offering listeners insightful commentary on player performances, strategic team decisions, and broader sports industry trends. The episode effectively balances detailed statistical discussion with engaging debates, making it a must-listen for sports enthusiasts seeking in-depth coverage of current events.
