It's only natural. You see, these golfers mistaken the true green lawns for an actual golf course. Have you noticed that?
Marvin
Come on.
Dan Patrick
No, no, I'm serious. They're the official lawn care treatment provider, the PGA Tour. So they know what it takes to get golf course quality lawns.
Seaton
So you're saying we could host a tournament out back?

And please don't tell me that Texas is a Cinderella story as an 11 seed. Now, they have rumored to have spent around $5 million on their roster this season. Just to give you an idea, these aren't official. I'm trying to find out how much teams have spent. Kentucky, they have spent I think over 20, 22 million dollars. But Arkansas, over 10 million. BYU, they spent maybe five to seven on one player. Duke, Indiana. Indiana missed the tournament. They rumored to have spent at least $10 million. Kentucky, Louisville, Michigan, North Carolina, St. John's and Texas Tech. Back to North Carolina. Going to be an interesting week for Hubert Davis and North Carolina. And it's strange to hear analysts say, is this a desirable job? And to me, this feels like, you know, they're the blue bloods. These are, you know, those stocks that you invest in and you keep them forever. And then all of a sudden you go, why isn't it a great job? Are they spending the money you have? Of course, the comparison eight miles down the road with Duke, Hubert Davis bows out. They blow a big lead in the second half. And it feels like. And once again, these are just analysts who have Been speaking. He might have to make changes to his staff. Now, sometimes when they say that the coach will make those changes or the coach will say, I can't do that. I can't fire these people. But it might be last call for Hubert Davis. Maybe it already has been last call. And we might have some movement there as early as today. Iowa knocks out the defending champ Florida Gators. St. John's against KU at the buzzer. And it sounded like this. No fouls. Inbound comes to Garland.
Marvin (Sports Commentator)
3 seconds, 2 seconds going on the drive to the rim. Layup is good. Layup is good. St. John's wins it. 67, 65. Does St. John's Red Storm storm into the Sweet 16 for the first time since 1999?
Dan Patrick
That's courtesy of Westwood One Radio. Second straight year in which every Sweet 16 comes from the five major conferences. You know, major conferences became a thing in 1997 with the formation of the Big 12. But that's why you can't look at Texas and say, they're a Cinderella story. I know they're 11 seed, but you're playing in a big boy conference there. You know, they underachieve, maybe during the year, but that doesn't make him a Cinderella story. Miami of Ohio, Cinderella story. High point, Cinderella story. We don't have those Cinderella stories. It doesn't take away. These are still Great Games. Kansas, St. John's there's no Cinderella story there. It was just a great game that felt like a Big east game back in the 1980s. It was, you know, back and forth, physical, low scoring. And the guy who hadn't scored a bucket all game says, I want to have the ball. Here is Rick Patino on that play.
Rick Pitino
Here's the amazing thing and the funniest thing I've ever been involved with. So we're going to run a play and. But they got fouls to give. And Bells comes up to me and says, run power, which is a high back screen pick and roll. So I walk away. I said, okay, power. I walk away and said, wait a second. He hasn't SC caught a bucket and he wants to run a play for himself. And I'm thinking as I'm walking, I said, but he's Bells. And not only did he do it, he went with his right hand.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, Dylan Darling. His nickname is Bells. I think people have talked about how he got that nickname. It was a great game. Strategy, two hall of Fame coaches, and that's what you want. I mean, March Madness is all about the coaches. When you think about how Great. These coaches, how many great coaches are in the tournament? Still in the tournament. But I started to think about John Caliperi and Rick Pitino. And today's athletic landscape is all about adapting. And some guys can't do it, won't do it, and they bow out, they retire. But you look at Patino and Caliperi, certainly Pitino, he's a lifer. But, you know, here they are in the sweet 16, and they have, you know, such a great track record of winning. Caliperi turned UMass into a force, took Memphis to a national title game, won it all at Kentucky, Arkansas, won the SEC title. Patino's resume, he took Providence to a Final Four, championships at Kentucky and Louisville, and then he went overseas and won a championship in Greece. Then he turned Iona into a tournament team. And now he's got St. John's back in the national spotlight. Different programs, different decades, same outcome, because neither coach stayed the same. They all adjusted. And that's what coaching is nowadays. Not just having a system, but knowing when to adapt and change. That's the system. And that's why you see Tom Izzo. You know, it's no accident his teams get better in the tournament, but maybe it's. He's better in the tournament than your coach. And I think that's something to be said, to still have the energy to do it. And that's the first thing that goes, I think, with a coach or even a player. Sometimes it's just that willingness to. To, you know, or the energy that it takes, certainly with the coach. I mean, Tom is a Hall of Famer, and he could retire, he could walk away, but there's part of him that it feels like, hey, I can do this again. And a lot of his players aren't great pros, but they're great tournament players. And that says something about Tom Izzo. You know, Caliperi, Pacino. They. And I was. And this has been said about other coaches, they could take their players and beat you. They could take your players and beat you. That's how good a coach they are. But when you get college basketball, when you can really, it feels like college football. I mean, Nick Saban, most of the work that he did was prior to playing the game. Patino, it's the game. It's. It's Calipari. It's the game. Hurley. It's the game. It's. What do I do right now with this play? Bill Self almost pulled off a really interesting strategy there. He just left a little too much time on the clock. And the last guy in the building you thought was going to take the shot, beat you to the hoop. Yes, Marvin.
Marvin
Especially with somebody like Izzo. I think it's a lot of energy with recruiting. Transfer portal. It's never ending. Those guys in the summer, they're running around all over the country looking at players and things like that, and. And then nil. And now you just add a whole nother dimension to being a college coach.
Dan Patrick
You got to adapt. You have to embrace it. You may not like it. You know, the old, you know, Saban wasn't going to do it. Jay Wright didn't want to do it. Tony Bennett didn't want to do it. Jay Wright and Tony Bennett should still be coaching, but they were like, I don't want to do this. I don't want to. I don't want to do this. The coaching part is the easy part. It's all the other moving parts where you're going, oh, my God, what do we got to do? Wait, the kid wants what? Wait, did we get him? How much do we got to give him? How much more? Wait, he. He wants to. He'll stay. But you're a CEO, not an X and O, and that's the difference here. And you got to cater to the collectives, and then you got coaches, and then you got agents, and then you're dealing with. And then you get out there and you get to Koja. It's a breath of fresh air. You're like, okay, this is what I built. But there is no Cinderella story. You may not know. Texas team, the Iowa Nebraska. Oh, awesome, dude.
Seaton
Yes.
Dan Patrick
Seaton comes in today and he goes, do you know how much they hate each other? Oh, man. And I said, well, download. And he goes, well, driving cross country a couple of times when you go into Iowa, you're told, I got directions for you to avoid Nebraska.
Seaton
Yeah. They're like, at some point very soon, you have to stop driving west and either go north or south, because there's. There's just a piece of the country that you do not want to go.
Dan Patrick
That's great. That's great. Poll question today. What are we going to start out with Seaton?
Seaton
We got a few options here. One of them. Well, two of them, actually, we need some help with. I need help phrasing this one because it sounds more rude than I mean it to, but the biggest losers this weekend were Florida, Kentucky, Kansas, or the lower seats.
Dan Patrick
I'd say Florida. Defending national champs. I'd say Florida. Plus,
Seaton
Is there. Is there any other time of year that you get more frustrated with basketball in this.
Dan Patrick
Okay, I, I'm, I'm just watching and I'm going, okay, that I, I wouldn't pick him up full court. Then it's going to be a three on two, and then Iowa has a jumper from the corner. They break. The press pick them up at half court. You know, light pressure. Don't let them get an advantage. And you let them get an advantage on you.
Buddha
But
Dan Patrick
they're kids. But they're. They're coached by grown ups. That's where I go. No, you don't press them because all they have to do is beat. If they beat it, then they're going to beat you. And they either make a two or they make a three. You gave them the opportunity to size up a three. An uncontested three.
Seaton
Kid drained it, though.
Dan Patrick
I did. Kid drained it. That's awesome. There are just times when I go, why? Why, why? But give credit to Iowa. I mean, it's an unbelievable. You want to play that, Marvin? Here's the call on the Hawkeye Radio Network. Full court pressure patch gets it into skirts to al Fulgaris for three in the lead. God.
Seaton
Good.
Marvin (Sports Commentator)
With 3.9 to go.
Dan Patrick
No timeout.
Marvin (Sports Commentator)
Florida's out of timeouts. Iowa will use its last timeout.
Dan Patrick
All you gotta do is beat. If you beat it, then it's three on two, and then you decide what shot you want. Yes, Marvin.
Marvin
And this is the national championship coach.
Dan Patrick
I know.
Marvin
He just won it last year.
Dan Patrick
I know. I just. I can have some pressure. I just want you in front of me. I can't let you behind me. You got what? Yay. You got what you deserved, you know, and give Iowa credit. And no, they're not a Cinderella story either. You can't be in the Big Ten and say, oh, we're a Cinderella story, or the SEC or not a Cinderella story. Yes.
Marvin
Marvin, what makes you more angry? Not doubling the best player or just messing up on a play like that with Florida yesterday?
Dan Patrick
Both. They, they're equal. They drive me crazy. It's like, oh, that guy's got the ball. I don't want him to have the ball. I want somebody who is not used. That's why you can look at the St. John's play and say, that's probably the guy you want to shoot. I just don't want an uncontested layup. And it felt like Kansas didn't know what was happening. They're like, they had strategy. Foul, foul, foul. Well, now you can't foul. And they Almost forgot. Like, wait a minute. No, you just play good defense and don't let somebody get a backdoor cut or go to the hoop. I couldn't be a coach now. I wouldn't be like Mick Cronin.
Paulie Fusco
Oh, you got a technical for clapping.
Fox Sports Radio Announcer
I know, but he clapped with attitude.
Dan Patrick
Mick's gotta win a little more to be that kind of personality. Like Danny Hurley, he's firing. He wins titles. Mick Cronin, it's like he's kind of goofy and kind of crazy, but he's entertaining. Yes.
Seaton
Dan Hurley is aware enough to know, like, yes, I'm a lunatic.
Dan Patrick
I would.
Sonos Advertiser
Trust me.
Seaton
I wish I wasn't this way. I'm sorry that I'm this way, but it's who I am, and I'm trying to be better. Mick Cronin is sort of like, yeah, you're welcome. You're welcome that I am who I am. You're welcome. There's a very different energy between the two.
Dan Patrick
But if you. Yeah, Hurley, kind of when he comes on, he'll be like, I know, I know, I know.
Seaton
I just. I wish I didn't. I know.
Dan Patrick
Mick Cron is not apologizing. He's not. All right, we'll take a break, get phone calls. That was a lot of fun this weekend. And we'll talk about. I know they're going to expand. The question is not if but when and how many. And can that dilute March Madness? It almost seems like it's Teflon proof, like you can't really screw it up. Now. I know, you know we love to have the Mid majors, but I'll tell you what, I think mid majors are probably doing or going to do and probably embrace it. I'll have that for you coming up right after this Dan Patrick Show.

3DP Show Operator Tyler sitting by. We'll come up with a poll question. Got a play of the day coming up as well. My college basketball source just text me and says this is the best info I have for the teams in the Sweet 16 with how much money they're spending. Michigan at 11 million Duke 9St. John's 11 Yukon 8 and a half Arizona 9.2 Arkansas 11 Purdue 8 and a half Texas 8 Alabama 10 Tennessee 10 Iowa State 7 and a half Houston 7 Illinois 8 and a half Michigan State 8 Nebraska and Iowa spend the same amount at $7.2 million. The Day SC of the Day this is the start of the day. Here are the odds. Here are the betting lines for the Sweet 16 games produced seven and a half over Texas. Nebraska is favored by two and a half over Iowa. That's one of my favorite games. Arizona minus eight and a half against Arkansas. Houston minus two and a half against Illinois. Duke minus six and a half against St. John's Michigan minus ten and a half against Alabama. Iowa State minus four and a half against Tennessee. And Yukon minus one and a half against Michigan State. Man. Duke, St. John's Yukon, Michigan State, Nebraska, Iowa. Let's go. DraftKings just sent me the odds. Duke is a slight favor to reach the championship game. Then it's Arizona, Michigan, Houston, Illinois, Purdue, Iowa State. Then it dips down to Nebraska, Michigan State, Yukon, St. John's Tennessee, Arkansas. The longest odds are Texas right now.
Paulie Fusco
Yes, Paulie, I do have some bulletin board material for Iowa. Nebraska.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Paulie Fusco
Iowa 2.5 billion bushels of corn in 2025. Nebraska 1.7. Saying.
Dan Patrick
Here comes. Here comes that what Stat of the day. Alrighty. Yes, Todd.
Caller Todd
And there's a kernel of truth to every stat, so you might want to place your bets. Now
Dan Patrick
let's settle on a poll question seat and then we'll get to some phone calls here. Best and worst of the weekend.
Seaton
Well, we got one here from Paul off of a topic that we had there in the first segment. Which states dislike each other the most?
Dan Patrick
Ohio and Michigan.
Seaton
Yeah, Michigan, Ohio is certainly up there. Iowa, Nebraska for sure is on that list. All right, Paul suggested Oklahoma, Texas. Very good one.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, absolutely.
Seaton
Now there is room for a fourth.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Seaton
Man, are there a lot that we could put into that fourth? You could go New York, New Jersey if you wanted to.
Caller Gus
Okay.
Dan Patrick
But there's no real rivalry, football or basketball wise with those two.
Seaton
Right, right.
Dan Patrick
I mean, that's, that's just states that don't like each other. Whereas Texas, Oklahoma is about sports. Ohio, Michigan is about sports.
Seaton
Right.
Dan Patrick
Nebraska, Iowa about sports. Yes.
Caller Todd
Tod, is Massachusetts, New York a stretch because of Boston, New York. That's pretty cities, I guess.
Dan Patrick
Right.
Caller Todd
Boston, New York instead of the whole
Dan Patrick
state of Massachusetts feels like it's Boston. It's Boston just happens to be in Massachusetts. Yeah, it's Boston versus New York. Yeah. But I don't think you get out
Seaton
towards the Springfield area in western Mass. I don't think they're like, you know,
Dan Patrick
New York's not that bad.
Seaton
Actually.
Dan Patrick
I like New York.
Seaton
I don't think it works that way.
Dan Patrick
But I'm talking about sports wise. It'd be about Boston and New York. New York City, maybe. I see what you're saying, Todd.
Marvin
Yeah.
Caller Todd
Because the sports hates, you know, bleeds into the just state in general.
Dan Patrick
I was looking at sports hate, not Just, you know, New Jersey and New York. Yeah.
Paulie Fusco
Paulie, Missouri, Kansas. Seems like they got a little something simmering, sharing baseball teams, so on and so forth. Also, I would assume Florida, Georgia would
Dan Patrick
be a big one. Well, Florida, Georgia line.
Seaton
Well, yeah.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. Yes. Marvin, did you have a suggestion?
Marvin
No. I think you guys covered all the state hate.
Dan Patrick
Oh, yeah.
Marvin
I like you.
Dan Patrick
Thank you, Marvin. I feel like the.
Seaton
The Kansas, Kansas, Missouri is a pretty strong.
Dan Patrick
Well, especially if they end up taking the Chiefs. That won't help relations.
Paulie Fusco
You share a city, kind of.
Dan Patrick
I know.
Seaton
We could always just leave the fourth option as other and let people populate.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Seaton
Maybe that's what.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, you could do that.
Seaton
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
All right, Chris. And, oh, let me mention this before I get to Chris in Syracuse. If I'm a mid major now, if I'm coaching a mid major, I look at my team and I treat it like it's a junior college. I'm going to get you for one or two years and I'm probably going to lose you. If you're a good player, I'm probably going to lose you. And this is where. And I heard Seth Greenberg talk about this. Can I get you for two years? And then let's say a big powerhouse comes in and, and wants you to transfer. Can I get a finder's fee for you taking my guy? Can the mid major get some money from, you know, one of these big conferences and say, we're going to pay you whatever, like a buyout. Is there a way that you could look at mid majors and say, how do we survive here? Miami Ohio was a great story, but once again, if I'm a, you know, a Power 5 conference, I'm not scheduling those guys. Now, I could do it because I have some kind of relationship, maybe with a coach or maybe I coach there, but. But I have everything to lose. They have everything to gain. And I'm just going by what I would be doing. If I'm coaching at a big school, I'd be like, no, it's dangerous. Are we gonna play on a neutral site? They're gonna come down to our place. We're not going to their place. But you're hearing these mid majors, these coaches saying, hey, we'll play anybody. High point coach, we'll play anybody. VCU coach, we'll play anybody. Miami, Ohio, we'll play anyone. By the way, the state of Ohio did not have a good tournament. I think that was Miami of Ohio, Ohio State, Akron. Is there another team? I think they went over. I don't know if Is there another Ohio team that I'm, I missed in the tournament, but I would treat my, my, my school, my team like it's two years. Two years and I'm going to lose some of these guys now. We find the mid majors do damage normally when they have their collective stay for about four years, three years. Like Purdue's players are good enough, but they're not great enough. So they're good enough to play high level and they stay. I mean, Zach, Edie stayed. Plus the amount of money that you're going to get. Most of them aren't playing in the NBA and you could still get sort of a mid major feel to a team like Purdue.
Paulie Fusco
Yeah, Paulie, I think I pitched this in November. The college football transfer portal. Would it be like a, like a transition fee, A transfer fee? So let's say James Madison has a really good quarterback and Texas takes him. Texas has to pay a fee to James Madison to go from the group of five to the power four conferences.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. I'm just trying to figure out, certainly with mid majors when it comes to basketball, how do they survive? And that might be a way that. All right, I mean, there's a buyout for coaches. Why can't there be a buyout for players? Like put everything on the table here and just say if you transfer, this is this guy's buyout fee. You know, maybe it's, I don't know. Throw out $50,000. Okay, we'll pay the 50,000 now. At least I can get another player. I think that's, that's the important part of what I'm looking at. I don't want the mid majors to go away, but they are. They're going to. Yes, Todd, by the way, Wright State
Caller Todd
Green County, Ohio was the other Ohio team. They bowed out to Virginia 8273 in the first round.
Dan Patrick
The Wright State Raiders. Yes, Chris in Syracuse. Good morning, Chris. What's on your mind today?
Caller Chris from Syracuse
Thanks, Dan. Got it. Best and worse than a comment. Iowa. Nebraska feels like football just before Thanksgiving, not basketball just before Easter. And St. John's partying like it's 1999. And I love how Mick Rick Patino has what my pop used to call Italian Alzheimer's. All you remember are the grudges. He wants some March Madness revenge against Duke and Christian laettner. And best LeBron passing the chief Robert Parish for most regular season games played with 1612. He may never catch Michael as far as NBA titles. In fact, Michael may end up with more NASCAR titles as well. But as Far as longevity and sustained excellence, LeBron is definitely the goat. And my worst, as coach Mark Pugh alluded to in his press conference, that in the age of nil, a powerful basketball program like Gonzaga may now have a hard time competing in the future. And if Carolina does move off of coach Hubert Davis, there may be a mutual interest in Mark Few taking over a program that hasn't hired a basketball coach outside a Carolina family in 74 years. This may be the perfect time for it. And to me, you're still North Carolina. Get a big name.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. But from Mark Few, unless they don't want me back at Gonzaga, I stay. You know, you built it, you're entrenched. But expectations rise. If they went from a Cinderella, like, oh, where is Gonzaga? How do you. Is it Gonzaga? Gonzaga. They're the Zags. Oh, okay. Yeah, they had John Stockton. Oh, okay. Now it's. We're used to seeing Gonzaga up there as a one or two seed. We expect them to go to the Sweet 16. The fans are no longer. Man, we're a cute story. Yeah. You're not. Yeah, Marvin.
Marvin
And what would be the upside for Mark Few to go to North Carolina?
Dan Patrick
I don't know.
Marvin
Like, there's no upside, I guess, if
Dan Patrick
you're going to, say win a title. But he's been in a title game before. Like, he can win a title at Gonzaga. I mean, you got Chet Holmgren, the number one recruit in America to go to Gonzaga for a year. Yeah, Paulie.
Paulie Fusco
Mark Few started at Gonzaga back in 2000, 1999. They were always good. And then around 2016 that they had a run where at some point in the season, they were the number one ranked team in the country every single season.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, they're not a Cinderella story. No, they're just not. Buddha in San Francisco. Good morning, Buddha.
Buddha
What up, dp? Happy Monday, boys. Damn. My voice is a little under the weather, but every day is a Super Bowl. Let's go, Fritzy. Dan, what a great weekend of hoops. Watching college basketball this time of the year is so fun because just how important every possession is and how much it means to those kids, man, the drama is always fantastic. Best of the weekend, Dan. How terrible the last place press defense was against Iowa. It's my best because he, like, he knocks down the corner three with confidence and then he left. He leaves his left hand up in the air saluting his pops in the ddc. That was special, man. And worse of the weekend in I was watching the games and I was channeling my inner DP the Michigan State, Louisville game. Dan, the rims were so loud. I was like. I was like yelling on my. Dan is pissed right now. This is not good.
Dan Patrick
Thank you, Buddha. Drives me crazy. Drives me crazy. You hear that, Tinty? That if it. I mean, it's more annoying than aluminum bats in the College World Series. Ping. Yeah, Paul.
Paulie Fusco
Dan, we're all over this story, as you'd expect. We really think over on this side that it's the mic'd up rims, not the rims themselves. They're over modulated. Too much volume on the rims.
Dan Patrick
All right. Yeah, I know. Back to you. I want to bring us closer to the action. Yeah. I would just say just make the shots, you know, then we won't have any clanging there. Oh, I remember playing on a rim like that, I'm like, damn, I'm gonna. I gotta swish everything.
Seaton
Can't shoot on that.
Dan Patrick
It's gonna drive me crazy. Yeah, I'm not fun to watch a game with, that's for sure, come tournament time. But I will say this. Your wife and your kids, your daughters, your mom, they may not watch any college basketball the entire year, but all of a sudden they're investing in a story. Now you have to explain why somebody's nickname is Bells. But other than that, they got caught up in the excitement and, you know, neutral site, just fan bases. I mean, Nebraska felt like it was a home game. That was great. That was fun to see. Nebraska basketball school. Now it's like Indiana football school. Question mark. Yeah, Paul?
Paulie Fusco
Well, you were talking about how schools spend money and Texas spends their money mostly on football, less so on basketball. If you're a school like Nebraska, what are you thinking for the future of your athletic department? Fund basketball or football more. Same with Purdue.
Dan Patrick
Oh, if I'm Purdue, I load up on basketball and like a UConn.
Paulie Fusco
Why even spend a dime on football?
Dan Patrick
Well, Nebraska, I don't know what they're. They spend on their football, but 7.2 million puts them. That's at the bottom. Iowa, Nebraska at 7.2. And then you got St. John's 11, Arkansas 11. You have Michigan at $11 million. Alabama 10, Tennessee 10. Yeah. Yukon eight and a half. All right, more phone calls. Gus in LA. Good morning, Gus. Best and worst of the weekend.
Caller Gus
Good morning, Mr. Patrick. Hoping the boys had a great weekend. You know, other than my Lakers being the best of the weekend, they're hot right now. I wasn't expecting them to be this hot at any point of the season. But hey, let's keep it rolling. You know, having my USC Trojans suck at basketball is like kind of being on scholarship this time of year because you get to just watch free basketball. You don't got to worry about any teams or anything like that. Except I hope that UCLA loses, which they did. Good job, Marvin. So other than that, you know, I wanted to find a worse of the weekend could have been that I found the very first gray of my life in my beard this weekend. But other than that, it's opening day baseball this week. My Dodgers finally back. I get to go to my first opening day this this year. My first time ever going to Dodge Stadium on opening day. Too much great things going on this weekend. That'd be a bad one. I'm gonna carry it on this week. You boys have a great week.
Dan Patrick
Thank you, Gus. Opening day great. Especially in that ballpark I saw where Shohei Ohtani's World Baseball Classic jersey went for one and a half million dollars. Now I could see paying for the last time he was in the wbc. That jersey more than this jersey. When we come back, somebody is going to average $42.15 million over the next four years. We'll tell you who and at what position.

According to the mothership, the super bowl champion wide receiver Jackson Smith and Jigba has agreed to a four year, 168 million dollar deal that will make him the highest paid wide receiver in history. The deal averages just over $42 million per year, including over 120 million guaranteed. Both setting records for any wide receiver. Timing is everything. Certainly when it comes to a contract. Your third year super bowl and you had an incredible year and they had to pay you, you can let your running back go. You can't let the best receiver, one of the best receivers in the NFL. You got Sam Darnold and Sam Darnold needs Jackson Smith and Jigba. Yes. Seaton. Yeah.
Seaton
And at 24, he's looking at another one of these. If all things, everything goes well, he's. He's looking at another monster deal like that.
Dan Patrick
Wow.
Seaton
You know, but this one, he'll resign when he's say 27.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, that's not bad. Yeah. Might be three years from now. You didn't get to that fourth year. Yeah, yeah.
Seaton
Pick up another hundo though.
Paulie Fusco
Whatever.
Dan Patrick
But remember when Kansas City let Tyree Kill go? They were like, we can't pay everybody and we got that quarterback who can make just about anybody look better. We got to pay Chris Jones and they let Tyreek Hill go. You can't let this kid go. You let you know your running back goes. And I think the John Schneider, the GM said, you know, you can find running backs, you can't you can't find Jackson Smith in Jigba.
Paulie Fusco
Yeah, Paulie, I looked right before this contract was signed, the Seahawks were in the top six of the league in cap space available. They're not in any trouble, cap space wise.
Dan Patrick
Well, I don't think they're paying anybody a lot of money.
Paulie Fusco
Correct.
Dan Patrick
Now Witherspoon's going to get paid, right?
Paulie Fusco
Darnold's medium priced.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, he. That's, that's that good price that we've been talking about that. It, you know, it can't be 60 and it, you know, can't be 15. You know, he's in that sweet spot in the $30 million range. But for Seattle, I mean, when you think about it, they're not spending a lot of money elsewhere, at least I don't think, I don't know if they have any other big ticket items there.
Paulie Fusco
Yeah, Paul Cooper cup makes a few bucks there. Leonard Williams makes a few bucks. Sam Darnold, that's about it.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. And I wonder if Cooper cup, you know, they're going to keep him. This feels like, you know, hey, can we do better with our money there? I mean, it's a nice situation to be in to say, you know, do we keep him? Do we move on from him? All right, more phone calls. Lucas. Lucas in Texas. Hi, Luke. Welcome back. Hey, Dan.
Caller Lucas
Good morning.
Dan Patrick

Best of the weekend and then some. State hate for you. Best of the weekend. You know, seeing the performance this, this weekend just gives me the excuse to bring back, I would say the greatest moment in Todd Prince's DP career, which is seeing one pasta premature making it to the sweet 16. I would just say that was the funniest moment I've ever seen in the show's history. It was great to see and it was just good games, good games all around. A lot of fun. And for state hate, you know, hey, Texans are proud, so we're not afraid to hate on anyone. So I got a problem with Connecticut. What's up with you guys and all your snow and seasons and flannel and what's all this junk?
Dan Patrick
Bring it on. Thank you. Thank you, Luke. I think four Ohio based teams. Ohio State. Right. State, akron. Miami went one and four in the tournament. Tied for the second most losses of any state with California, UCLA, St. Mary's Santa Clara. California Baptist went one in four Florida teams went two and four. Miami, UCF, South Florida and Florida. North Carolina had five teams. North Carolina, North Carolina State, Queens, High Point, Duke. And they've gone three and four. Duke is still Playing Pennsylvania based teams. Penn, Lehigh, Villanova. Over 3, Georgia with Georgia and Kennesaw State. 02 South Carolina based teams. 027 Texas based teams. TCU, A&M, Texas, Texas Tech, Houston, Prairie View, SMU 9 and 5 with two teams still playing with Houston and Texas. Pete in Iowa. Hi, Pete. What's on your mind today? Hey, Pete in Iowa or you have Josh in Iowa? Who did you pick there, Marvin?
Paulie Fusco
Pete in Iowa.
Dan Patrick
All righty. Hi, Pete. How are you?
Paulie Fusco
Yeah, hey, good. I got a best, better and bestest. I guess the best would be Iowa wrestling. Coming in fourth place in the NCAA wrestling. Kind of a down year. Had a good comeback. Best would be Iowa State taking care of Kentucky without their best player and hopefully he'll be better. And the bestest, of course, was Iowa's victory. And I don't know if you could find two better coaches than Offenberger and McCollum. They are great hires. And I have a question for you. Who does Bennett Sturtz remind you of?
Dan Patrick
Marvin?
Marvin
I don't want to. I don't want to call him another white point guard. Like, I don't want to compare him to somebody else. So I really got to think about it. But first thing I'm going to say is, like Jerry McNamara, which is lazy.
Paulie Fusco
You got to go deeper. You got to go like Dan Dickow or someone like that.
Dan Patrick
Pete, who do you have?
Paulie Fusco
I have you a young damn Patrick.
Dan Patrick
Oh, oh, no. He passes more. I. I'm. I'm kind of. I'm trying to think. I was talking to a friend. He said, you were born at the wrong time. I said, yeah, I know, I got it. Dante Calabria at North Carolina.
Seaton
Respect. Yeah, that's of a Malcolm Brogdon situation.
Dan Patrick
Now, Brogdon, once again, if you play defense, then, yeah, you gotta. I can't compare the celebrity bracket. Ross Tucker is in first place. Nice, nice, nice. Basketball tied for second. Frank Caliendo, Jason Garrett, Melissa Stark. Let's see.
Seaton
No one is more uncomfortable being tied for second than Frank Caliendo. I know I drew this bracket and then I went. And then. Is it good?
Dan Patrick
Is it bad?
Seaton
I don't know.
Podcast Host
Tell me.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, there is a frenetic pace to him when he's sitting there having dinner with you.
Seaton
He's awesome, he's great.
Dan Patrick
He's a great company.
Seaton
He has a million stories. He always has something to say. It's just a matter of who's going to say it to you.
Dan Patrick
Yes. Oh, Morgan Freeman is here. William Shatner's here.
Seaton
And that's when I knew my bracket was dead. Oh,
Dan Patrick
and he does. Charles Barkley, Segway Charles will join us coming up in about 20 minutes from now. One hour in the books on this Monday. Best and worst of the weekend. More phone calls coming up. Fritzy Seaton, Marv Poly, yours truly, back with hour two after this.

Summary Prepared By: [Your Name]
The first hour of this Monday's "The Dan Patrick Show" is a deep dive into the NCAA basketball tournament as the Sweet Sixteen field is finalized. Dan and the crew discuss which teams remain, how the changing landscape of college sports—particularly NIL and transfer rules—is impacting Cinderella stories and traditional powerhouses, and the intense rivalries both on the court and between states. The episode also features spirited conversations about coaching adaptability, legendary March moments, and concludes with breaking NFL news about a record-setting contract for wide receiver Jackson Smith-Njigba (JSN).
Cinderella Stories Are Vanishing
Team Spending and the NIL Era
Iconic Game Recaps
On coaches who adapt:
On NIL's effect on coaching:
Rick Pitino's audacious player:
On the drama of March:
The hour is energetic, analytical, and informal—equal parts sharp sports commentary, coach-speak, and locker-room banter. Dan leverages decades of experience and insider sources but keeps the tone light, engaging the crew and audience with humor and relatable asides (“I wouldn’t be a coach now,” “drives me crazy” about rim noise, etc.). The callers add to the show’s communal energy.
This episode sets up an action-packed week of March Madness discussion, exploring how NIL and transfer dynamics shape tournament narratives and coaching legacies. Dan seamlessly blends tournament excitement with sober analysis of the changing sports ecosystem—and somehow still finds time to break NFL contract news.
