It's a meat Friday, but our chef is down for the count. Dylan got hurt yesterday afternoon playing pickleball. And once again, not having Tyrell pickleball shoes on. So he has got a banged up ankle. So much so he didn't even tell me what the menu is. I don't know what we're having for meat Friday right now, but Dylan is here. As he said, hey, I'm at. I'm at least here to try to put on this Friday meal. I don't know what we're having. He doesn't have the energy to, I guess, write that down or type that up. But. So I can't have you live vicariously through us. I'm not quite sure what we're having, but. Yes, yes, yes. Marvin.
Jay Shetty
I was told we're having lamb burgers in chicken Slovakia.
Dan Patrick
Okay. Oh, so who's got it better than we do? Oh, boy. Well, he doesn't know if he can go all the way through and make the meal. So now you got Tyler. Tyler used to do the job, so now he's bringing Tyler in. There's a little bit of friction because Tyler lost his job to Dylan. And then Weeks, our cameraman, is helping out in the kitchen. It's kind of a mess right now. Normally, meat Friday is a great day, Great moment for us, but it feels like there's some tension in the room. Yes, Todd. Tyler's spinning a spatula, right? Is that like, warming up in the bullpen? He's got, like, different cooking equipment that he's just kind of flipping around back there. Thank you, Todd. Well, stat of the day brought to you by Panini America. The official trading cards of this program. First hour, brought to you by Tire Rack. They've been helping customers find the right tires for how and what and where they drive. We had an incident yesterday with Pa Ray. He had a flat tire. He didn't know how to change the tire. He then, on the verge of tears, comes to me and starts talking about tire rack. Could I reach out to tire rack? And I said, you can do it. Tire rack dot com. Dan, tell him what you drive, what kind of tire you need. So he needed a replacement, a Hankook tire. So we took care of that yesterday, and the tire is on its way today. Tirerack.com the way tire buying should be. All right. We had football ish last night. And depending on your viewpoint here, if you're a Lions fan, then you probably go, yeah, what's preseason? It doesn't really matter if you're a Chargers fan. You go, hey, I look pretty good last night. Yeah, I'm thinking AFC title game. We're running the football there. That's Jim Harbaugh football. That's what it is right there. Trey Lance looked pretty good last night. And if you're a Charger fan, okay, you gotta be happy. But it's. It's interesting how you can have an approach where the game doesn't mean anything or the game means a little bit more than it's supposed to. That's preseason football. And, and preseason football isn't pretty because it's a prime example of, hey, let's just get out there and let's take our organized scrimmage and just put it on national TV and you'll be able to see warts and all kind of what's going on preseason, A series of glorified tune ups. But it's still entertaining. And, you know, you're trying to watch a little bit and just kind of gather. All right, what's this mean? Or who's that player? Sometimes it's just a vibe. You know, you're watching Dan. You know, these are two of the more animated coaches with Jim Harbaugh and Dan Campbell. And then it's the hall of Fame weekend and you're celebrating. All those players were going in, players who come back for that. Brett Musburger was in the booth last night. And you end up telling stories more than showcasing the game. But it was fun. But football is here. We have turned the page. We're in the month of August and it's full speed ahead, except for the commanders with Terry McLaurin, because now he's requested a trade and you start to. These things normally work out, but at what point do you go if you're Terry McLaurin, the point of no return because he wants to be paid more than $30 million. I don't know if it's 32, $33 million. He's a big reason why Jaden Daniels played so well last year. And you brought in Debo Samuel, but Debo Samuel is not Debo Samuel anymore. And he's not the kind of receiver that Terry McLaurin is. Terry McLaurin, if you throw it in his area, he's going to get it. Contested catches, he was number one in the NFL the last five years. This is what you need with Jaden Daniels going into a Second year, you got momentum. You got the defending super bowl champs in your division. And this is that hold up, this is that hiccup. This is something that could derail bigger dreams that they have. But Terry McLaurin is requested a trade from the commanders. And I don't know if this heats things up or the commanders actually go, all right, but here's the problem. If I'm a commander's fan, you're not going to get dollar for dollar for Terry McLaurin. You're going to get draft picks. Because if you're trading Terry McLaurin to a team, you're probably trading him to a team that is a playoff team that might go, hey, you know, the Chargers are a name that came up. The 49ers are name that came up. The Patriots a name that came up. I mean, there's going to be teams that will be waiting and seeing. What would it cost to get Terry McLaurin? You still have to pay him, but you're going to get a guy who's going to sign a new contract with you, and you'd have him probably for the next four years. He probably looks around and goes, okay, Cortland Sutton signed four years, 92 million. Well, I'm better than him. We're the same age. Brandon Iuk got $30 million. I'm better than him. He's not better than CD Lamp like you. Now, you have to take inventory, and you have to be honest with yourself. Your agent has to be honest with you and say, hey, nah, I don't think you're there. You're not in Justin Jefferson, Jamar Chase category. Now, are you the next level? Maybe. And what is commensurate to your. Your production, your output? But that, that's. I mean, that's a really, really important situation here. Now, you got the Bengals with Trey Hendrickson. He's still on the outside, but at least he's in camp. Terry McLaurin, when you say, hey, trade me, that's a little bit different. Now, you know, once again, this comes down to war words, leverage, and they could wrap this up, you know, probably in a half hour meeting and say, all right, I'll take this, I'll surrender that. Next thing you know, Terry McLaurin's in camp. But, you know, the potential for disaster here looms pretty big because Jaden Daniels, you want him to take that next step. Second year, we see quarterbacks, sometimes they take a little bit of a dip. And I would love to keep that momentum the best I can. If I'm the commanders and sometimes it's a couple of million dollars. And this goes back to what I've said about the cowboy situation with Micah Parsons. You're probably going to be spending $8 million more than you need to each year with Micah Parsons because you could have gotten him for maybe $34 million. Now it's probably going to be 42. Well, this is where you lose a couple of players, couple million dollars here. Now we have to let that guy go. It was a couple of million dollars with Derrick Henry and I go back to that couple of million dollars you could have had. Derrick Henry, who wanted to play for the Cowboys, is from Dallas, wanted to play for you. But a couple of million dollars. But Trey Hendrickson, Terry McLaurin, Micah Parsons, I think all of them get done. But it's only because I've been doing this for a long, long time and they usually get done. Somebody doesn't get traded and you have a hold in and that's so they don't get fined. But it was football last night and it was still fun. And you know, great hall of Fame weekend coming up there in Canton, Ohio. Trade deadline. Boy, the artist formerly known as the Minnesota Twins. I would think program sales will probably be pretty high for the Twins fans because I think they traded nine players over the past couple of weeks. So nine of 26 players on their major league roster were traded during the trade deadline period. Seven of them were traded yesterday. Now, if I'm a fan of the Twins, if I know and I can trust the front office that in three years from now we might look back on this and say, hey man, that was the turning point. Look at the players we got or the draft picks we got. I don't know how many teams can sign up for the Miami Marlins blueprint because they won two World Series titles and it felt like every five years here they are. And then they take the wrecking ball to the roster and then they build it back up again. You have to have extreme confidence in your front office to be able to do that. But Minnesota Twins traded nine of 26 players on their major league roster. Alrighty. 877-3-DP show email address dpdanpatrick.com Twitter handle @DP Show Good morning. Jay Shetty
What's in worse shape? Race cart.
Dan Patrick
Dylan's ankle or Todd? Wow. Okay, Todd, are you in bad shape?
Jay Shetty
I could be in a lot better shape.
Dan Patrick
Okay. Ray's car is going to get fixed because tire rack will take care of that. Dylan will eventually get healthier, and then he'll get. I mean, I don't want to set the bar. No, no. His ankle will get healthier. Will it ever be the same again? Really?
Jay Shetty
I don't know.
Dan Patrick
He. But he has to get the Tyrell pickleball shoes. That'll help, but. And Todd takes his daily. I'm not going to pick on Todd today. Is that breaking news?
Jay Shetty
That would be extremely breaking news.
Dan Patrick
I'm taking the under on that one if we're doing odds. Okay. Now, I've been told. I've been told, sources close to me, that Todd is going to take a shot at me in a song coming up a little bit later on.
Jay Shetty
I don't know if it's a shot at you, per se. It's a shot at something.
Dan Patrick
Okay. You got your hall and Oats T shirt on.
Jay Shetty
I do.
Dan Patrick
Send it a message. Yes. Yeah. Once again, you're gonna take a shot at me? I guess. Yeah, I guess I'm gonna wait for you to fire first. Once again, I don't start them. I end them. Okay. Yeah.
Jay Shetty
That's a good attitude.
Dan Patrick
You come in peace, you leave in pieces.
Jay Shetty
Wow, that sounds like a bumper sticker.
Dan Patrick
Is that a movie? It's. It's a line from Jay Billis. He was in a movie, and I think that was the line.
Jay Shetty
I thought Arnold Schwarzenegger said that in some movie like, I come in peace, you go in pieces.
Dan Patrick
I thought. I thought Jay Billis was the one involved in that movie or something. Can we. What? I don't know if I just made something up here.
Jay Shetty
Let's see.
Dan Patrick
The Arnold Schwarzenegger. Wait, are you taking a shot at me? I am a little bit. Yes. I'm gonna be really sensitive today. No, you're not. Yes, I am. I'm gonna be really sensitive. Okay. Yes, Paul, I have. I have that line. I come in peace, you go in.
Jay Shetty
Pieces from a show called Dark angel.
Dan Patrick
Which I don't know. And was Jay Billis on Dark Angel?
Jay Shetty
Yes.
Dan Patrick
Thank you. Thank you. Back to you. I don't. I don't know if that's the stat of the day, Marvin.
Jay Shetty
Jay Billis was on Dark angel, but.
Dan Patrick
I Did Dolph Lundgren have the line? Dolph Lundgren, let's go.
Jay Shetty
This just got even better.
Dan Patrick
He's in the scene. I. Maybe it's Dolph Lundgren. Says it to Jay Billis. Something about showing up, you come in peace, you leave in pieces. Yes. Todd, was Jessica Alba in Dark Angel?
Jay Shetty
That was some other Angel TV show that didn't last. I'm just asking for a friend.
Dan Patrick
Okay. Okay. So what's, what's another poll question there? She was in a show called Dark Angel. Jessica Alba. That's funny. I remember being on the COVID of TV Guide. She's got a new boyfriend. Oh, yeah, yeah. She broke up with Cash Warren and now she's got a new boyfriend. She cashed out. Thank you, Todd. What other poll question do you have? Did we go with Terry McLaurin? You trade him or pay him? You can. I mean, we can if you're a commander. I gotta, I gotta pay him. Okay, here's another topic. And, and we will have to have more time on this. If you're a fan, are you on Terry McLaurin's side to say, hey, he produced for us. He didn't have great quarterbacks prior to last year. He was a constant. He was a class act out of Ohio State. Or do you go, come on, you're gonna screw up our season here? Because I think that's how fans react that, hey, this is about us. This isn't about you. Come on, you really need 33 million, you know, so that. I think that, that, that's the interesting part of this. I think when fans see a holdout, they're not on the player's side with that holdout. We'll talk to Louis Riddick, former front office executive. He is a former player, works for the mothership. He'll join us. Coming up, we will get to phone calls. Operator Tyler is sitting by 877-3DP show. Just getting started on this meat Friday, Dan and the Danites Dan Patrick show.

Tyrell T Y r o l pickleball.com we'll get to your phone calls. Settle on a poll question. Lewis Riddick of the Mothership. He's ESPN NFL and college football analyst and worked in the front office of the Commanders and the e former NFL safety. Good to see you again. Let me start with Washington with Terry McLaurin. He's requested a trade. Now, if you were working in the front office with the Commanders, how would you read when that said it's not a demand, a request, what's that mean to you?
Jay Shetty
It's basically the same thing to me, especially, you know, in the context of, you know what, what he's saying is, if you're not going to meet, if we're not going to be able to kind of like, come to some kind of agreement here in terms of the pay raise for me, given that I'm entering into the last year of my contract, then just trade me. If you really, if we're really this far apart as far as how we see my value going forward, then go ahead and trade me. Which they're saying, look, that's ridiculous. We're not going to do that. You know, they're probably they're thinking, look, we still hold the cards. We could wind up making him play out this year at the current salary, franchise him for 20, 26, and then, you know, let him be a free agent. There's a lot of things that they can do that they don't. That they can do that really require them not doing anything at all, which is just sitting there. And he knows that. And really, the only recourse that you have as a player, Dan, as you know, is. Is like, the only thing you recourse you have is to withhold services, so. Or asked to be moved somewhere else. And, you know, whether he's saying, look, I'm requesting a trade, demanding a trade, obviously he's ticked off because him and his agent, Buddy Baker, obviously see his value going forward is much different. And objectively, based upon how he played last year, they have an argument, okay.
Dan Patrick
But let's look at the. What is reasonable for it. Let's say you ran the commanders.
Jay Shetty
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
You want to resign him. He's better than Brandon Iuk, who's getting 30, but he's not Jamar Chase or Justin Jefferson. He's not CD Lamb. So where's the landing spot there?
Jay Shetty
I think. I think you just said the magic number. And I've been saying this on tv. I said it on social media last night. I think 30 million is the magic number for me that. I think if I was Adam Peters, I would be saying, okay, look, this is where this needs to be. Realistically now, if he's thinking, I need to be up here at 3334, then obviously I'm going, well, we probably can't get there. And we know that the sweet spot in any negotiation, in any ultimate deal is where you're not happy with exactly where you got to, but you're not dying over it either. And that goes for both sides of the equation, both management and the player. And I think that's the area where I would be like saying, look, if we're here, then, okay, I'm good with this. I'm good with this. And that's me trying to remove the emotion of how I feel about Terry McLaurin, the person and the player out of it, okay? Because there's no doubt that what he has done in the past, he has earned it. He has earned. Look, he's earned every penny that he has made to this point. And I think if you were just going to factor in what he has meant to this organization, you could probably make an argument for it being even higher in the 31, 32 area, you know, when we're just taking into account the entire player. But from a strictly business sense, I'd be comfortable with 30 million per year. It sounds like, from what I've heard, that maybe they may be looking for an average that's even higher than that. That puts him into that stratospheric level, which I would be a little bit wary of doing as well.
Dan Patrick
But do front offices pay you on what you've done or what they think you'll do? Because Trey Hendrickson did everything, outperformed TJ Watt the last two years. Terry McLaurin, he produced last year, but it feels like, yeah, but you're 30 years of age now. What are you. We're not paying you on what you did. We're paying you on what we think you can do.
Jay Shetty
I say this all the time. Look, contracts are about future performance, projection. I. I say that, like, almost annoyingly so, on TV all the time. And I'm. And I'm with you. Look, but I. I also am someone who doesn't believe that 30 years old all of a sudden is some kind of big, giant boogeyman that people constantly lean on to say, oh, but he's going to be 30. Okay, well, if I really want to get technical, Terry's not going to be 30 until the middle of September. So what does that mean for just. I know people use that as this line of demarcation to say, well, now the tide has turned. Now it's nothing but downhill for this player. And that's not true. It's just not true. I think you have to take every one of these cases case by case, understand what his history has been as far as his availability, his durability, his training habits, his personal life, all of that, and make a reasonable projection going forward about, okay, do we think we can get the roi, the return on investment that we're looking for? And I think with Terry, everything that I've heard is that he's not someone I would bet against. I wouldn't be trying to negotiate against what he has done in the past, because he has shown that he is an ultimate professional. And yeah, you know what? There are also people who make arguments for players based on what they've done in the past. Almost as if players deserve some things, you know, a premium above and beyond what you rationally think he may. May have earned going forward simply because of how good of a pro he has been on and off the field. And Terry probably falls into that category. What's interesting about this situation is that there are people who are really split on this. They really are. People are like, hey, Washington, Adam Peters should make his stand and Terry should just play out the deal because he is going to be 30 and he's not a great separator. He's not DK Metcalf, he's not Justin Jefferson. And then there's people who go, have you looked at the objective data on this guy? Have you looked at the effect on the QBR and the quarterback rating of Jayden Daniels when they're targeting him? Have you looked at he was top three in the league in touchdown receptions last year? Have you looked at the number of first downs he produced last year, which was up there with the elite players in the league? Have you looked at how strong he is at the catch one, the number of contested catches he made and the time and the number of first downs he produced? Well, why wouldn't you project that that's going to get better this year? As Jaden gets better, the run game gets better. They're in year two of this program. I would be comfortable projecting his production to stay right where it is, if not improving, based on all those factors. But, you know, we have this tendency to want to say, well, he's 30 years old now. There's no way he can get better. Just like saying the same thing about quarterbacks, that the year two jinxes is coming and that Jaden won't get better. I think everything is trending the right way in Washington. I hope they're able to land somewhere in that low 30 range or maybe right around 30 and Terry can get in there because this could be very, very, very disruptive to this offense if it, if it's one of these things that gets extended into the regular season.
Dan Patrick
Talking to Louis Riddick of the Mothership, would you rather pay DK Metcalf or Terry McLaurin?
Jay Shetty
It's a great question. I would probably, at this point, I would. I would rather pay Terry simply because of the person and the player and how much I trust the player and how much I know that the effect that he has on the football team from a. Just from. From a cultural standpoint. And I know this going back to his days at Ohio State, I loved. I loved this dude when he came out and he was someone who was kind of like severely overlooked. And I think he's still being overlooked and a little bit disrespected now. But see, what people fall in love with is the fact that DK is huge. He's an absolute freak. He's fast. He has a flair for the dramatic. I just want the steady, consistent producer that if. You know what, if you ramped up McLaren's targets to the degree, like, say, like a Jamar Chase or Justin Jefferson had, you'd see the kind of production that you just couldn't deny. But then there's this. There's this esthetic, you know, part of this thing where you sit there and go, but he's not 6 4, and he's not 215. He doesn't run 4 2. Well, get off of that and just look at the game and watch him play and what he means to Jaden Daniels. I think that's all you need to see.
Dan Patrick
What do you look for in a preseason game?
Jay Shetty
Yeah, I'm a little bit of a geek, man. I like. I love watching all the second and third round players. I like. You know what I like seeing? I mean, second and third, second, third, fourth, fifth round guys who are really just fighting to kind of make a team. What I look for, I look for the uncovered gems. I look for execution amongst the guys who, you know, are going to be on the football team regardless of the level of competition they're playing against.
Dan Patrick
Okay, but what did you see from Trey Lance last night?
Jay Shetty
That's my point. That's just what I was going to get to. It's about execution for Trey. It's about the comfort level for Trey. It's about the timing that he played with, the accuracy that he played with, the fact that he played with his shoulders back and he was kind of had his head up and he was like he was feeling good. He never has looked like that. He's never looked like that in his career. I don't care if it was against the Lions in Canton at a Hall of Fame game. Jim Harbaugh is having some kind of effect on this young man, and he has finally hit his stride. After being so green coming out of college with such little play time, he's finally hit his stride. And I think. I think we know this and you know this for sure, man. We have seen in the recent past how much quarterback development is not a set thing in terms of its timing. You have to be willing to be more patient now than I think you've ever been, simply because the variance between organizations and programs is so great. You just don't know. You just don't know how guys are going to gel from one place to the next. I know it's only one game, but I'll tell you what, in all my time of watching Trey Lance. And I was a huge supporter of Trey Lance. And I felt like, man, did I really just blow that and get that wrong. I saw something last night I'd never seen before. I'm hoping he can continue it and he sticks there and eventually he gets his shot.
Dan Patrick
But I don't think we're patient at all. I think we're less patient because it used to be you could be a number one pick and sit for a couple of years. I mean, it doesn't happen like that. It's. Hey, did you see what C.J. stroud did his rookie year? Hey, did you see what Jaden Daniels did his rookie year? Drake May. Why can't all these quarterbacks be the same?
Jay Shetty
You're right.
Dan Patrick
I mean, it's quick. We get you in, you know, into the washing machine and all of a sudden you come out. How do you smell? If not, I'm going to put you back in and we'll move on. You know, it doesn't take long for these teams to go. We tried it for a year or two years. Now we're going to go try to find our quarterback again.
Jay Shetty
Yeah. You know, ironically, Chris Ballard was just talking about this in regards to Anthony Richardson, about the fact that he has seen and he knows it. I know GMs are talking about it. He's seen, you know, recently when you're looking at guys like Baker Mayfield and how it took a little bit, you know, for him to kind of finally hit his stride. Sam Darnold, in the kind of year that he had last year, he has seen that. Hey, look, we need to be. Maybe we need to rethink the amount of time that we give these guys, regardless of where, of where we drafted them and what our initial expectations are. Because everyone's just different. The problem is, look, owners are impatient, fans are impatient. We're just living in an impatient world where we just want instant gratification right now. Hell, we have rookie quarterbacks in camp right now who after one week, they have a one bad period and we're going bust. Get him out of there. Get the next guy in there. We, I mean, and, and we know, look, we've just seen cases where guys finally found their, found their right fit and then they finally take off. Geno Smith, another one. But we don't care. We don't care about that. We're like, I don't care. I don't want to wait that long. Either this guy shows me right away out the gate or we're moving on to the next Guy. It's, it's an interesting, it's an interesting case study. But I, but I think with Trey Lance, he's probably going to be the next one. That it'll be interesting to see if he can continue on with this kind of momentum and whether or not he ultimately gets a shot to play somewhere else and actually play a lot of football. Because in la, he ain't playing ahead of Justin Herbert.
Dan Patrick
Well, he's only 25.
Jay Shetty
Exactly.
Dan Patrick
I mean, that guys don't even really come into their prime. And now, because they're coming in young, you know, Anthony Richardson, 20 years of age.
Jay Shetty
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
I mean, you either know or you. I think you either know right away that somebody can or can't play. I think you can see how they, they prepare, work ethic, leadership. I mean, all of that stuff. But I still go back to Trey Lance and I go. Not enough sample size with games. So he gave me one miracle season at North Dakota State. I need more. It's like Zach Wilson, I need. I, I need more because Bo Nix gave me 50. Jaden Daniels gave me 60 starts in college. But now I know what I have. At least I have a better understanding of what I have. Mitchell Trubisky was really one good year in college. Those guys scare me. Anthony Richardson wasn't even a starter, consistent starter. He showed flashes, but it wasn't enough for me to go. He's a top five pick.
Jay Shetty
Yeah. And that's. See that, that's the, that's the balance in the internal, both individually and organizationally fight that every team has every year. When you're talking about players who are supremely gifted, who may not have the resume that you're talking about versus players who have great production, a long history or a much longer history of production, but name may not be as gifted. Which way do they lean? And a lot of times because of, I mean, let's just be honest, because of the, let's say the ego of people in the NFL. And we all have it. They believe, you know what, I can make this guy into exactly what I want him because just look at these traits. Damn, you got to have these traits. I don't want this guy who's a little bit lesser of an athlete, a little bit lesser of a player who may be topped out. They always talk about, you know, you always have these conversations about what is ultimately the ceiling of this player, this guy's ceiling so much higher. And with our great genius coaching and development, we're going to get it out of him. We're going to develop the next hall of Famer. And that's the risk that you take. Like with Anthony in particular. Look, everybody in Indianapolis knows, and he knows himself, that the biggest thing holding Anthony Richardson back was Anthony Richardson. And it was, it was the thing. And I wanted to jump in and say this while you were talking, but I didn't want to interrupt you. But the biggest thing with him is the maturity factor, the football character factor, the commitment factor about it being constant and consistent and constantly trending the way it needs to. Because if he can get that, and he is fighting an uphill battle now, especially what happened with him down in Houston, he's fighting that. That that image is burned into some people's brains for eternity. And no matter what he does, they're never going to feel as though he has the. Has what it takes to be a franchise quarterback. But that's what he's fighting now, because from an athletic standpoint and a trade standpoint, you've already seen him in Indianapolis make throws that nobody can make in the league. That's that battle all the time. And with Bo Nixon, how many people killed Bo Nix coming out in the draft last year and said, Sean Payton doesn't know what he's doing. What's he doing? This guy doesn't have any upside. This guy's. He's got. And now, now Sean Payton's going.
Dan Patrick
Told you.
Jay Shetty
See. So, yeah, it's a, it's a fascinating thing that front offices go through every year.
Dan Patrick
I was thinking about this with the AFC west that you got Andy Reid, hall of Famer, Pete Carroll, maybe a Hall of Famer, borderline Sean Payton, maybe Hall of Fame, Jim Harbaugh, hall of Fame caliber coach with college and pro. And I was thinking we had a division that's had four hall of Fame like coaches at the same time. And I thought about the Giants with Parcells, Washington with Joe Gibbs. I don't know if they were all there at the same time, but let's say I had Jimmy Johnson, Bill Parcells, Dick Vermeil with the Eagles and Joe Gibbs. I don't know if they were there at the same time, but those are four hall of Fame coaches in the same division. I don't know if it was at the same time.
Jay Shetty
Yeah, it, it is. The west has really, for me, exploded onto the scene this year in particular because of what you're talking about and will be the. I mean, there will be some absolute Kong versus Godzilla type battles all year long.
Dan Patrick
Well, how would you rank them? So Andy Reed, Andy Reid, Is top.
Jay Shetty
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Now who's the second best coach in the AFC West?
Jay Shetty
Sean Payton.
Dan Patrick
Who's third?
Jay Shetty
Oh, wow. Look, I, I would say it's Pete because of what Pete has done in the NFL already. And then, and then Jim. And look, there be, there are people who will, who will debate that bottom three guys or the next three after Andy, and probably put all kinds of different order. But in my experience, Sean Payton, in my experience is kind of like underrated in many respects. He doesn't get, he doesn't, he's not constantly in the discussion as far as when we're talking about offensive geniuses, just good team builders, good coaches who, who are great at utilizing players and understanding their strengths and weaknesses. But he's one of the best I've ever seen.
Dan Patrick
But is he in the category with Tomlin and John Harbaugh, who both won a Super bowl and so does Sean Payton?
Jay Shetty
Absolutely. He's absolutely in that, in that category.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Jay Shetty
And I, and I've gotten, I've had the fortune, you know, good fortune of being able to spend a lot of time talking to both of those guys and talking to Sean Payton. You sit and talk to Sean Payton about football. It is a tutorial. You will fill up notebooks, you'll want to write down every single thing that he says. And you can't argue with the way in which he has built teams in conjunction with the GMC's, worked with over the years and what he's doing in Denver. Denver. Denver's going to be right there. Denver's going to give Kansas City every single thing they can handle this year. Everything. They have a championship caliber defense, a championship caliber offensive line. It's going to be whether the quarterback can take another big jump. They've got backs, they've got wide receivers and they got a coaching staff.
Dan Patrick
They're going to be for real in two weeks. I'll have you back and you give me your super bowl pick.
Jay Shetty
Deal. I'll give it to you.
Dan Patrick

More history for Cal Raleigh, his 42nd home run of the year. He has now hit more home runs by a switch hitting catcher in major league history. That's courtesy of the Mariners radio network. Cal Raleigh is 42nd home run of the season. That breaks the single season record for most home runs by a switch hitting catcher. That was Todd Hunley, 41 in 1996. Play of the day. Mariners are all in. I love it. I love it. They're all in. Looking to get more out of your car wash? Try McGuire's new Hybrid Ceramic wash and wax. Comes in a bucket or foam cannon. Boost protection with extreme water beating technology the next time you wash your car truck. Meguiar's reflection your passion. Yeah, a couple of teams, they went all in, all in for next year because the Orioles, the Twins, and it was like, hey, come on, we got a yard sale going on. And Minnesota trading nine of their 26 players on their major league roster. Buddha in San Francisco. Hi, Buddha. What's on your mind? Nobody happy me Friday, boys. I come in peace. And my passion bucket is full this morning. DP Dan, real quick. I was having a conversation with an employee of mine this week and he asked me if I had seen the cameo by Dan Patrick and Happy Gilmore to yet. And I quickly corrected him and said DP did not have cameo. Pat Daniels had a role. Now get back to work, son. And I have two questions. Dan, can we get a countdown clock for your retirement like we have a countdown clock for the beginning of the football season? I mean, that would be cool and it'd be great content.
Jay Shetty
And then secondly, I was just checking.
Dan Patrick
On the gong because is that still available? Because I feel like there was a couple of gong worthy moments this week, especially with the whole berating. Christine, it's here, it's here. But that, that's just doing a test drive on it. Nobody's worthy of a Gong today yet. I'm trying to be a little more judicious when I use the Gong. I could use it on Todd quite a bit. I might be using it later because Todd has a song parody where I think he's making fun of the Beatles and Bruce Springsteen. But thank you for the phone call, Buddha. And yes, I had a role in Happy Gilmore 2, not a cameo. Big difference there. Let me see. Avo in Los Angeles. Good morning, Avo. Oh, Brent Musburger is going to join us in the final. Oh, is that Monday Todd or today? Just got the word. Brent Musburger Will join us on Monday's program. Okay. Going into the hall of Fame. He can recap the weekend. Alrighty. Avo, what do you have for me? First time, long time. 58185 question for Dan and the Dan, if Terry McLaurin were to get traded, what's the top three teams you guys think he gets traded to? I would say New England would be one that I would look at and I can only go on the other now. Somebody just compiled a list. The Chargers were on there and the 49ers were on there as well. That would be odd if Debo Samuel goes to Washington and Terry McLaurin would go to San Francisco. I don't think he's going to be traded. It just feels like, you know, and I don't think anybody holds out anymore after Le'Veon Bell. Nobody should hold out. That was a financial disaster. I saw where Stephen A. Smith said Micah Parsons should hold out or the entire season. I'm like, you'll never get that money back. That's silly. Oh, you're going to sit out the entire year. Just ask Le'Veon Bell about that. It didn't go well when he was holding out from the Steelers. That'll get done. They get done. It's really rare. When they don't, I'm surprised. I'm more surprised when they don't get done because it feels like everybody has a number, they know what it's going to take and then. Are you going to cave? Are you going to cave? Are you going to cave? All right, a little bit. All right, a little bit here. I've been involved in these negotiations just with my career and it's like, ah, you know, the hell with this place. And then it's like, all right, the heck with this place. All right. Well, this is still my place. I mean, Miles Garrett was out of Cleveland, right? He's out, he's gone. All of a sudden it's, we'll make you the highest paid non quarterback. All right. You know, starting to call Cleveland my home. Corey in Missouri. Hi, Corey. What's on your mind? Hey, Dan. Longtime listener. My first of all, my kids and I have a seven year old daughter and a four year old son and they refer to you as Uncle Dan because in the summertime, while I'm a high school basketball coach and teacher, we like to wake up to Dan and the Danettes. But I have a stat of the day for you. This day, 1976, the Seahawks lose their first preseason game in team history. 27, 20 to the San Francisco 49ers. State of the day. Start of the day. We love your stat of the day. Stat of the day. Stat of the day. Oh, damn. Give us the stat of the day. Stat of the day. Brought to you by Pandora and Panini America, the official trading cards of the Dan Patrick Show. Terry McLaren is one of four players with at least 1,000 receiving yards in each of the last five seasons. He joins Justin Jefferson, Mike Evans and Devonte Adams. Well, he's not Justin Jefferson, but Mike Evans is a future hall of Famer. Devonte Adams as well. So you're, you know, you just have to kind of know your place. Where is that sweet spot that we go? You know what, we're comfortable there because you got a great situation with Washington too. You got to factor that in. Great quarterback, playoff team. You're the leader of this playoff team or one of the leaders. One hour in the books on this meet Friday. We'll talk to you on the other side.

Podcast Summary: The Dan Patrick Show – Hour 1: Terry McLaurin’s Trade Request, Louis Riddick
Introduction
In this episode of The Dan Patrick Show, released on August 1, 2025, Dan Patrick delves into the pressing issue surrounding Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin's recent trade request. To provide expert analysis, Patrick is joined by Louis Riddick, a seasoned former front office executive and current ESPN NFL and college football analyst from The Mothership. The discussion navigates the complexities of McLaurin’s request, its implications for the Commanders, and the broader landscape of NFL trades.
Terry McLaurin’s Trade Request
Dan Patrick initiates the conversation by outlining the situation:
[24:24] Dan Patrick: "Washington's Terry McLaurin has formally requested a trade, sparking uncertainty within the organization and among fans. McLaurin, a top-tier receiver, is pivotal to the Commanders' offense, especially with rookie quarterback Jaden Daniels developing."
Patrick emphasizes McLaurin's value and the potential fallout:
[25:26] Dan Patrick: "Terry McLaurin is one of four players with at least 1,000 receiving yards in each of the last five seasons. He joins elite company, and his departure could significantly impact Jaden Daniels' performance and the team's overall dynamics."
Expert Analysis with Louis Riddick
Louis Riddick provides a deep-dive analysis of the situation:
[24:24] Louis Riddick: "A trade request from a player of McLaurin's caliber isn't merely a demand; it's a signal that the player and his agent believe his market value has increased beyond what the current team is willing to offer."
He further explains the front office's potential strategies:
[25:40] Louis Riddick: "From a business standpoint, the Commanders might aim to receive draft picks in return rather than another player, especially since trading McLaurin to a playoff contender could yield valuable assets without a direct dollar-for-dollar exchange."
Market Dynamics and Team Considerations
Patrick and Riddick discuss the possible trade destinations and the financial implications:
[30:55] Dan Patrick: "If Terry McLaurin were to be traded, who are the top three teams likely to pursue him?"
[30:55] Louis Riddick: "New England would be a logical destination, followed by teams like the Chargers and the 49ers. These teams are in playoff contention and could leverage McLaurin's talents to bolster their offenses."
Riddick addresses the valuation of McLaurin compared to other top receivers:
[32:04] Louis Riddick: "When choosing between receivers like DK Metcalf and Terry McLaurin, I'd prefer to pay McLaurin. His consistency and the trust he engenders within the team are invaluable, even if his physical attributes aren't as flashy as Metcalf’s."
Contract Negotiations and Future Projections
The discussion shifts to the contractual aspects and future projections for McLaurin:
[25:59] Louis Riddick: "From a business perspective, $30 million per year seems like a reasonable offer for McLaurin. While his agent may push for higher, this figure aligns with his production and impact on the team."
Patrick raises a critical point about age and performance:
[27:26] Dan Patrick: "But do front offices pay you based on what you've done or what they think you'll do? McLaurin is 30 years old, and that often influences contract negotiations."
Riddick counters this concern by emphasizing McLaurin's ongoing performance:
[27:50] Louis Riddick: "Age is just a number. McLaurin is entering the last year of his contract, but his performance metrics suggest he can maintain or even improve his output. Teams should consider his reliability and professional demeanor when assessing his future."
Implications for the Commanders
Patrick and Riddick explore the broader implications for Washington:
[32:30] Louis Riddick: "McLaurin's potential departure could derail the Commanders' offense, especially with a young quarterback like Jaden Daniels who relies heavily on a stable receiving corps."
[33:50] Dan Patrick: "Washington has a strong coaching staff and a promising quarterback in Daniels. Losing McLaurin could disrupt their momentum and short-term goals."
Conclusion
The episode concludes with reflections on the NFL's trade dynamics and the importance of player value versus team strategy. Patrick summarizes the delicate balance the Commanders must maintain between honoring McLaurin's contributions and managing their roster effectively.
