Ecuador, Netherlands. They end up winning. Sweden and Japan tie. Paraguay. Australia end up tying. Back to Team usa. One of the better stories of the tournament, of course, home field advantage. But while the loss was disappointing last night, especially a goal coming in the closing moments, in the bigger picture, the grand scheme of things, this doesn't affect the Americans reaching the knockout stage. That was the goal. Then all of a sudden you have reporters saying, well, you guys could have gone undefeated. And the group stage coaches are saying, well, we didn't. Who cares? I mean, we can go undefeated and lose the next match. Our goal was we're moving on and we want to be ready. This is a good problem for Team USA to have. We haven't. We haven't had this good problem before. But Team USA still has every reason to believe it can make a deep run. You know, good teams learn from victory. Sometimes you'll get a win and it covers up some of the bad things you were doing with the loss. It may ultimately prove more valuable because maybe a wake up call with some certain things that Team USA did and did not do. But three, two, the final in that. All right, Dylan, poll question. Well, I've got a smattering of poll questions from Todd. Actually, for starters, Team USA's World cup late loss to Turkey is no big deal. A bit concerning or very troubling.

It's like a college football team going undefeated and they're already in the playoffs and then they lose their conference title game. It doesn't matter. You'd like to win it, you'd prefer to win it. They didn't.

World cup title odds. In case you're wondering, France is your favorite, followed by Spain, then Argentina, England, Portugal, Brazil, Germany, Netherlands. Team USA is plus 3000 to win the title. France, by comparison, is plus 400. But also, I was looking at this. According to DraftKings, Team USA odds to win the cup plus 3000 to reach the final, plus 1200 to reach the semifinal, plus 400 to reach the quarters, minus 115. Dylan. Of course, the resident gambler in this program, usually on the wrong side of things. Are you betting on team USA Big or just maybe to advance a couple more games?

Well, for starters, I have to admit something. I actually watched the entire game last night, which I think was the first buzzer beater I've ever seen in a soccer game.

It's almost like it was a little rain on the wedding day type thing. It's no big deal, but you prefer to walk off with three wins.

Yeah. Yeah, I agree. You want to, you know, keep that momentum going. Eric Winold, when he joined us yesterday, he said, no, this is about just keeping momentum going instead of having reporters asking questions like, wait, what happened? You know, we. You could have done something no other team has done. No, the fact that we didn't need to do that tells you everything you need to know about this team. What other poll questions do you have there? First hour. Deal.

Well, do we want to get into the WNBA stuff at all, or we gonna.

Alyssa Thomas's flagrant two and one game suspension for actions against Caitlin Clark is fair, even though not assessed at the time or way too little, too late.

[Dan Patrick]

I think it's a smart move, that's all. Smart move. Looking at, you know, watching in real time, you don't see it. You slow it down, and you can just go back retroactively. Suspend her for one game. Should have been called in the moment. I still think the more dangerous call was when Caitlin Clark went up for a jump shot, tried to come down, and there was a player in her landing area. Like, that's where you sprain an ankle, break an ankle, and that has to be called. But, I mean, this caught fire yesterday. We still don't know about the 30th anniversary poster of the WNBA. I think it has to do with licensing that maybe you don't have the rights to Caitlin Clark. I don't know if that, you know, includes Diana Taurasi and Sue Bird and Candace Parker. I mean, it's not white and black because you have, you know, Candace Parker. To me, Catchings, who are black, they're not on the poster. There might have been licensing. Do you have the rights to Caitlin Clark to be able to put her on that poster? As silly as that may sound, there has to be a reason. We said yesterday. Is it incompetence or was it intentional? Because I don't believe any publicity is good publicity, especially if you're the wnba, especially with this topic. But the number of people who are like Caitlin Clark should just go overseas and play. These players bargained to make more money so they don't have to play overseas. You would have these players finish the season and go over to Russia and play. They don't want to do that anymore. And if they're Caitlin Clark and Nike is paying you all this money, you want to be on display here. So taking your ball and going home, that not. Not a logical response to this.

Yes, Pauline, on the WNBA 30th anniversary poster we brought up yesterday, it could be a rights thing. Darren Revelle of Collect, our friend who does sports business, said it definitely was part of it. Other than Nike, Clark allows licenses to use her name and number, but not necessarily her likeness without permission. It definitely could have been a permission thing with Nike and Clark's likeness.

Yeah, but I don't know about these other players. That's. I mean, Diana Taurasi and Sue Bird, Candace Parker, Tamika Catching should be on that poster. I mean, that bothers me more than the Caitlin Clark, because Caitlin Clark, it feels like that's just marketing or licensing. Why wouldn't you put I, you know, erroneously said founding fathers, but it's the founding members of the wnba, you know, the people that this was built on, like they should be on a 30th anniversary commemorative commemorative poster. Um, but, yeah, that was wise for the wnba. By the way, just a note to the wnba, have somebody available. You know, yesterday we're, you know, one of the few outlets that called looking for a quote. We couldn't even get a quote out of anybody. And Paulie was working on that most of the show. Like, have somebody available. All right. Like, you have to answer tough questions sometimes, and this is a time when you have to answer a tough question. But have somebody available. That's all have somebody available for comment. Everybody was traveling. Nobody was available yesterday. And then it spirals out of control and it gets even worse. And then all of a sudden, everybody's got an opinion about this. Even people who probably didn't even see the game. They saw the highlight. Oh, my God, look at what they're. Okay, we've been doing this. We've been doing this since she got into the league. It will continue until something happens with the WNBA where they have some kind of edict that says, look, it feels like we're going to the opposite extreme to not protect her. Yes.

Paul, you said this yesterday in the moment with the poster situation. If it's a conflict of rights or likenesses, say it. Say it early and get it out there. If they would have said this yesterday morning early, you wouldn't have had 12 hours of hot takes about they leaving her off the poster.

[Dan Patrick]

Yeah, I know. And then, you know, people get caught up. Well, because she's white and straight. They've had white and straight stars before. Okay, like, that's not why WNBA players may not like Caitlin Clark. They don't like that she gets all the attention. That's all. Now, if you want to factor in other things, okay, maybe. But the overriding factor, I think that you have this pushback from players is, hey, she's kind of got carte launch. She got the red carpet treatment. We're the ones who have been here in the league. We built this league. Okay? And they're right. But that doesn't mean the WNBA should not protect Caitlin Clark. She. Their ratings are 30% higher than any other team. People tune in. She's a difference maker. I mean, that's not an opinion, that's a fact. She's a star. They should protect her. Because we're watching the stars. We see what happens. What doesn't happen. We see when Wemby does something, or Jalen Brunson or Luca, we're watching the stars. So be aware and watch the stars as well. You don't have to treat him that way. But, you know, there should be more respect than how she plays the game. Now, does she try to sell every foul, every time down the floor? Yes. Yes, she does. And I think that's bothersome to the league, to the optics and to the opposition. But I just want to make sure that, you know, this doesn't get out of hand where, you know, she suffers a really bad injury and she's coming off an injury plague season a year ago. But, yeah, yesterday they let it kind of metastasize and that's, that's on the wnba, but have somebody available, that's all. And you could even say, look, we have no comment on that or we can't comment on that. Or maybe you can say, hey, it's a licensing situation. That's all. There are certain players that we don't have control over. That's all. Then we move on. And then we just talk about those two plays in that game, including putting your fist on her throat or close to her throat and then helping yourself up. That was intentional. That should have been a suspension. They did. It took a while, but everything, everything's okay now, right? We move on,

So the question to the room, maybe in some callers is do you have any advice on that or have you had to ever go to a place or go see people on a vacation that you really weren't looking forward to?

Well, why aren't you looking forward to the vacation?

Well, I guess you could say it has to do with in laws and a little bit of drama and there's some missing family members that we're really looking forward to seeing that won't be there. So now it's going to be more time with people that we want to spend less time with.

Hopefully they don't listen to the show every day like you do there, Andrew, but good luck. I don't think I've been in a situation where like, I wasn't keen on going to Disney World one time because I'd been working second shift and I mean, I was, I was fried. And Disney World is not a place to go if you're fried from your regular job and taking four kids. They were probably under the age of nine and you're walking around in the heat and you know, you got one who's in a stroller but doesn't want to be in a stroller. You got one who wants to go here, two that want to go here, one that melts down on It's a Small World and went into hysterics and you're like, it's a vacation. And Dan, the fact that we heard you reading out at Grateful Dead set list yesterday, awesome. Well, listen, I wanted to bring up this lamella ball trade here in locally in North Carolina. It's getting a lot of criticism, but I think the Hornets are playing chess and everyone else is playing checkers. They traded for Kobe white at the deadline. They just saved a ton of money. Traded lamello ball like they now have the second most assets in draft assets. They have the most biggest trade exception in the history of the NBA. The market size of Oklahoma City and the market size of Charlotte are very similar. If you look at the build of what the thunder have done to what now the Hornets have and going forward, very similar. And I think like I heard somebody refer to the Hornets general manager as chef Jeff because his name is Jeff Peterson. So I think chef Jeff is doing a hell of a job. And I think this is the middle of all trade. Like there's criticism for the moment giving one first round pick back, but that trade allowed them for that that exception. So I think that that had been taken into consideration. They weren't going to give them a crazy amount of draft picks. So I think it's, you know, because the offset of the salary of Kobe white to a mellow ball just frees up a ton of money. I think this is genius and this has been in the works for months.

Yeah, yeah, I'm fine with might be a little bit addition by subtraction. I think they want to change the culture of this team. Con Knippel had a coming out party and they probably look at lamelo ball who is a highlight. I want to emphasize that he is A highlight social media star. But if you're looking at trying to emulate okc, well, you're going to do that by getting picks and thinking of bigger depth. And that's what OKC did. And these GMs should be trying to emulate that. But it's really hard because once again, nobody knew SGA was sga. They traded Paul George and at the time people were like, how do you trade Paul George? Well, you trade Paul George because you know you're going to get assets in return and then you're going to build out that. And that's what they've done. How important is this game?

[Taylor Twellman]

It's important because I think the general public doesn't fully understand with the 48 team tournament that the top four teams in the world FIFA rankings, France, Spain, Argentina, England. If all four win their group, they avoid playing one another until the semifinal. So while both France and Norway are going through, it's vital for France that they, they win this group. And so there's still, still something to play for here.

[Dan Patrick]

I a lot of people clutching their pearls after the loss last night and bigger picture with Team usa and I kept saying that's a great problem to have that we didn't need to win a match. I don't know how you feel, but that's how I saw the result. Your thoughts

I mean, Dan, listen, they scored in the 98th minute, so it's a, it's an absolute bitter pill to swallow. I literally was on the verge of putting it out on social media. Great perseverance from the second string. Great reaction to twice going down. I mean, once going down to one, scoring the time goal and then finding a way with second half subs to mitigate that. Now, in saying that, I went into the game saying this, the result was inconsequential, but the game wasn't meaningless. And so now Pochettino has answers to which players in the knockout stage are ready for the moment. That I'm not totally sure he got answers he wanted, but he got answers. It's the first time, so own it. Take the, take the fruits of those labor and say, hang on a minute, we're favored against Bosnia. We got to be the proactive team and we got to be on the front foot from the opening whistle.

[Dan Patrick]

What did you see from Christian Pulisic last night?

[Taylor Twellman]

He's fine. He's completely fit. I'm actually, I was in the camp of saying don't play him because I don't think the reward outweighed the risk. However, I understood saying, listen, if we can get him 20 some odd minutes, it gets rid of those. He's been out for two and a half weeks. He gets into the flow now he's in the thick of it. So you gained a lot now by him not being injured, getting rid of the 20 plus minutes. He got nutmegged on the game winning goal. I know that's going to be tough and he probably was thinking about that at the end of the night, but immediately you saw how important he is. He made that team much more dangerous within three minutes of being on the field. And against this Bosnian team where they defend and tactically are very south. Danny's their most important attacking player.

[Dan Patrick]

USA faces Bosnia Herzegovina. So what can you tell us about them?

[Taylor Twellman]

Bosnia is very similar to Australia and Paraguay. They'll defend first. They'll defend very Simply with a 4, 4, 2. They'll have numbers behind the ball. The difference between them versus Paraguay and Australia, they have absolutely no problem doing that for 90 minutes. And what I mean by that is they will be 100% committed in making sure defensively they frustrate the United States. Now the caveat to this is emotionally, where are they going to be? This is their first knockout stage game in the history of their country in the World Cup. So emotionally, are they going to be prepared for 70,000 people that are red, white, blue rooting for the opposition? This is 100% on away game, both on the field, off the field and everything else about that. So the first 15, 20 minutes will dictate whether or not the United States has a game like they did against Paraguay or they're going to have 90 plus minutes because now in the knockout stage that can go to penalties. Dan, it's important that the United States wins that first half because if they do, Bosnia's got to come out of their show. That's not where they're at their best.

[Dan Patrick]

If I talk to you in two weeks, what are we talking about?

[Taylor Twellman]

We're talking about the United States preparing for the quarterfinal. I really believe that. I've said that from the beginning. I just believe that they would win their group and by winning their group, it would set themselves up with a third place team and then a Winner of two second place qualifiers. I think we're talking about the United States in a court, in a quarterfinal.

And it feels like we're asking more and more of these younger athletes when they're 17, 18, 19, hey, Dallas Mavericks, Cooper's gonna be your leader. He's 19, 18, 19 years of age. And then you go to the other end of the spectrum and you see what's happening with the these athletes who are in their 40s, I mean, joke. Novak Djokovic is 39. Aaron Rodgers, Messi, Ronaldo, Brady. Brady won a Super bowl, you know, in his mid-40s. Kawhi Leonard, 34, LeBron's 41, not I put in Kawhi because he had one of his best seasons after being injured. And when you think about being 34, Magic and Isaiah Thomas retired at 32 and 33. Larry Bird was 35. So that, you know, we're kind of bookending that it's, it's commonplace. Serena gonna play at Wimbledon, singles match in her 40s. That used to be, if you got to 35, you were old. Now with all of the nutrition and travel, you know, workout programs, off season, all of that, we're surprised when you don't go into your late 30s here. So there's no way they would ever say, hey, let's bring it down to nine feet. But if you have youth basketball then that should be nine feet like you want to get.
