Yesterday on the Pat McAfee Show, Aaron Rodgers talked about his future with the Steelers and the NFL.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, I'm pretty sure this is it. You know, that's why we just did a one year deal. You know, this was really about finishing with a lot of love and fun and, and peace for the career that I've had. I mean I played 20 frickin years. You it's been a long, a long run and I've enjoyed it. And what better place to finish than in one of the cornerstone franchises of the NFL with Mike Tomlin and, and a great group of leadership and great guys in the city that you know, expects, expects you to win.
Marv Albert
I don't have any problem with this. I mean the Rogers news I rarely react to. Thought he was going to go to the Steelers. Thought he was going to wait as long as he could. Didn't know that he got married. Maybe that was the reason why he wasn't showing up. You want to do a victory tour? Great. I have no problem with that. Steelers, I'm sure would want to know this, that this doesn't become a week 16, week 17. Are you coming back? Are you coming back now? It's still going to happen. Let's say Aaron Rodgers plays great. Let's say the Steelers maybe a number two seed, number three seed. Let's say they overachieve, say they have home field advantage first round of the playoffs. You're going to ask that question. You're going to ask that question and he might give you a different answer. He might say I love it here. I love playing for Mike Thomas. I Love my offense. You know, I'd love to run it back one more time. I, I wouldn't rule it out, certainly with Aaron Rodgers, but he's earned the right. You want to have a victory tour. Great. Yeah.
Memphis Bleak
Marvin, how far do the Steelers need to go before if you're Mike Tomlin or if your management say, hey, Aaron, do you want to give it one more go?
Marv Albert
I would say, how about you do something you haven't done in a long time? Win a playoff game. If you would win two playoff games, then all of a sudden I don't think it's a foregone conclusion. Aaron walks away. But it's Aaron Rodgers and you just don't know. I mean, I've, I've, I covered. I'm friends with one of the great mysterious athletes in sports history in Barry Sanders and I'm working Sports center on a Sunday night. The Lions just lost end of their season and his agent, Peter Schaefer calls me and says, you can't say anything but. And I went, don't do this to me. Barry is on a plane to London. He's going to retire out of nowhere. So is Aaron mysterious like that? No, but there is mystery attached to him. You know, Barry's most unique athlete I ever covered. You know, frugal. You know, he ran to make highlights, but his personality wasn't that way. His personality was three yards, but his running style was 60 yards, making, you know, seven guys miss. But with Aaron Rodgers, you know, he wants to play this year and that's it. Great. I, you know, bigger picture. More important to me is Mike Tomlin because Mike Time Tomlin and the Steelers signed up for one year. They had to know that it was one year and he gave him a bargain price. Now you're back in the, you know, quarterback wishing well again. And this is what I wonder. Do you want him for one year or are you going to try to. And maybe they didn't like these quarterbacks. Maybe they didn't like Jackson Dart. Maybe they didn't like Shador Sanders or any of these other quarterbacks. But you're back in the mix again. And if you're still looking for a quarterback, man, are you behind a lot of teams, all of these teams that we talk about, what do they have in common? Very good, if not great quarterback. Steelers, are we going to go through the Mason Rudolph? Hey, you know what, he learned a lot from Aaron Rodgers or Will Howard. I mean, you're going against Lamar Jackson and you're going against Joe Burrow in your own division, you know, so it's one year. So that's why I wonder, is Mike Tomlin one more year? And look, I know the national perspective on Mike Tomlin is a whole lot different than the local perspective because this is a team, this is a franchise. This a fan base expects to win, not, not a playoff game, compete for championships. And I wonder if, if they go out, like they don't win another, they don't win a playoff game, you know, then you start to look at this and say, do we need a change? And I wonder with Aaron Rodgers and Mike Tomlin, maybe they go out same time. Maybe. All right. 8, 7, 7, 3, DP Show Email address DP danpatrick.com Twitter handle @DP Show Yes, Paulie, you were talking about the.

Rutgers guys and the Duke guys in the draft tonight. Yeah, the best I could find. And I got to keep looking. But the 1984 draft, Sam Buoy of Kentucky, second, Jordan, third of Unc. Perkins, fourth of Unc. And then Mel Turpin, sixth out of Kentucky.
Marv Albert
So dinner bell, Mel.
Paul Pabst
Yeah, Dinner bell, Mel. For the top six picks.
Marv Albert
Okay.
Paul Pabst
But we're still looking.
Marv Albert
I was actually at that draft. I should know that, should have remembered. I forget a lot of things I should remember, but I remember a lot of things I should forget. Christian in Denver joining us. Hi, Christian. What's on your mind today?
Christian
Hey, Patrick. Love your show. Long time listener. Love everything you usually say. I got a little pushback with you and kind of wonder, you, you talk a lot about the Nuggets winning that championship because of their deep bench. And I'm just wondering who that deep bench was. We had that Crayola, the Crayola kids. Jeff Green, not, not a big dude. Christian Braun was a rookie. And then obviously we had Bruce Brown. But what's this depth that you're seeing on the. From the bench? 30 minutes from Brown on an average. But besides that, what are we looking at here?
Marv Albert
How did they do after they lost those guys off the bench?
Christian
Well, they didn't lose Christian. Brian went into the starting lineup. Jeff Green's been non existent. Peyton Watson is filled in. So now Westbrook, not great. I agree with that. Peyton Watson coming off the bench. I mean, what's the difference there?
Marv Albert
Why is it, why is it Joker is saying he needs depth?
Christian
Two different things. What you're saying there, right. Of course he needs depth. And especially now with the new rules with the second and third aprons and this awful contract with Porter. But I continually hear you say, and I think I Take you as Bibles. I mean, I'm down with you, but I think this is a bad take with our. That bench wasn't strong. A rookie. Christian Brown and Bruce Brown, Cowboy. Bruce was awesome. If we could have kept him. But we couldn't offer him any more than 3 million a year. Green not existed. Kanchar, Jordan, Thomas, Bryant, Ish Smith, Reggie Jackson.
Marv Albert
Well, something proves my point. If you guys don't get back to the NBA Finals. There was something about that roster that helped you win a championship, that these rosters are not going to help you win a championship.
Christian
I agree with you wholeheartedly. But that. Do you really believe that, that Bruce Brown was the reason why we won the championship, or was it because Joker went on a heater?
Marv Albert
All you need is contributions. One or two or three. You know, it's. It's not a boy. That bench, like Indiana Pacers. That's the best bench we've seen in postseason history. The numbers bear that out. I'm not saying Denver's bench was like that. I'm saying they got contributions. They didn't get contributions that match that. And you still had the same people in place. So what changed with Denver? Aside from firing your coach with a couple of weeks to go, you still. Yeah. Joker with the best year of his career and it didn't matter, right? Correct. So something changed. He had his best year. You still had Porter. You still had Aaron Gordon. You still had Jamal Murray. And what happened?
Christian
We took the chance to game seven and we didn't have a bench. Westbrook and Peyton Watson.
Marv Albert
No, that's what I keep saying. Get a bench. That's why I keep saying you didn't have a bench. I said it was malpractice. I said at the beginning of the year, Christian, I said, this is malpractice. You did not give Joker depth. You didn't give him a bench. Thank you for the phone call. I said that to start the year, they gave Michael Porter Jr. III that stupid contract. Yes, but the year 2023, Michael Porter Jr. Was phenomenal for them. So of course you pay him. He. I mean, they're. They're sort of big three, if you will, air quotes in 2023 were phenomenal. They were elite. They carried them to that championship. And while the bench may have been. Were good, they weren't like the. They didn't carry them, you know, but you. I think what's gone wrong is Jamal Murray hasn't been the guy that he was that year. Michael Porter Jr. Wasn't the guy that he was that year. Yeah, well, they don't have a bench. If they did, then Joker would have said, hey, I love the depth we have. I love the roster we have. That's what he said in. In, you know, after they were eliminated. His exit interview had to do with, we need depth. Depth is your bench. Depth is not necessarily your fourth or fifth starter. I mean, it helps. Yes, Marvin.
Memphis Bleak
And after they won the championship, that off season, they lost Reggie Jackson, their backup point guard, they lost kcp, and they lost Bruce Brown. So that's three big contributors off of that championship team. So.
Marv Albert
And KCP could play back then.
Memphis Bleak
Correct.
Marv Albert
Yeah. So I. Once again, if you want to stand by management in what they're doing in Denver, good luck. You're not going to win another title. Not going to. Yeah. Mark.
Memphis Bleak
And also, when they want. I want to take something back. When the Nuggets won a championship, I thought Nicole Jokic was in Dirk Nowitzki territory where he was on scholarship, and I was wrong because Dirk Nowitzki was not considered the best player year in and year out in the NBA. So it's not like, oh, how can Dirk only win one championship? No, no, no. Everybody's happy he won a championship. But if you're Nikola Jokic and you're the best player, you have three MVP awards and you only have one title to show for it. That's going to be on management. After what happened after 2023, he's more.
Marv Albert
Likely to win another MVP than he is an NBA title. Just. That's the truth. And I would hope that they surround him because you hate to see a great player. Just like, you know, Giannis. Giannis isn't going to win another title in Milwaukee, and he knows that. The question is, do you want to uproot your family and then go chase a title someplace else? And we see players who do this all the time, and I get it. I have no problem when people say, oh, LeBron chasing titles. We made him chase titles. We kept saying, you're not Michael Jordan. He won six titles. LeBron's like, nobody wants to come to Cleveland. I'll go Miami. I'll hook up with my friends there. I'll come back to Cleveland. I'll get you a title. I'm gonna go to the Lakers. We'll win a title in the bubble. I get it. You know, might be watered down. We may not look at it the same, that Mike stayed with his team, Kobe stayed with his team, Duncan stayed with his team, Bird stayed with his team, Russell with his team, I understand all of this. Steph Curry with his team Magic. Yes. Mark.
Memphis Bleak
DP we're never happy because to me, in the NBA, either you chase titles or you chase money and some. No one's going to be happy if you do either one.
Marv Albert
Yeah.
Memphis Bleak
Like, oh, you chase the bag.
Marv Albert
Oh, I remember when Kevin Garnett would. He would get criticized because he didn't want to win championships. Be like, why don't you want out of Minnesota? We didn't value loyalty. We were critical of, you know, the fact that Garnett was staying with Minnesota. Then, of course, they pulled off the heist with the Boston Celtics that Boston did, and then he ends up winning a championship. It didn't mean Kevin Durant's a greater player because he won that title. And if he stayed in Minnesota, it doesn't mean he's less of a player because he played. He went to the Western Conference finals one year, but he was loyal, maybe to a fault. Yeah.
Paul Pabst
Paulie, a little bonus coverage to end the segment for you. Dan. The 2007 draft. Greg Odin, Ohio State number one. Mike Conley, number four out of Ohio State. Corey Brewer, seven out of Florida. And Al Horford, third pick out of Florida.

Jay Billis ESPN NBA College Basketball Analyst do you guys know that Jay Billis was drafted? Now this is before they. It was just a two round draft. Paulie.
Paul Pabst
Yeah, 1986. We looked it up and the draft was seven rounds back then and Jay picked by the Dallas mavericks, picked number 108 in the fifth round out of Duke.
Marv Albert
What was that night like for you, Jay?
Dan Patrick
I think it was about 2am when I got drafted. David Stern was in his pajamas. So yeah, it was a little bit late.
Marv Albert
Did you go to camp?
Dan Patrick
I did, yeah. I went to rookie camp with the Mavericks. I did. I went to rookie camp two years in a row and in fact was never cut by the Mavericks. I went over to Italy before veterans camp before cuts were made. So they actually the Maverick we used to laugh. Keith Grant was later became the gm. Rick Sund was the guy that drafted me. But years later when I was doing games, I would see Keith Grant at a game and he'd go, you know, we still hold your rights. And I was like, could you just waive me in the middle of the year just for a joke? That would be great. But they never did.
Marv Albert
Cooper Flag, it feels like if he was a, an NFL draft prospect at quarterback, we would have negatives attached to him. Right? We just do that with quarterbacks. I haven't read anything really negative about Cooper Flag. I mean, is he that perfect of a prospect at 18 years of age?
Dan Patrick
Well, I mean, the key of your question there is the 18 years of age thing. You compare him against other players at 18. You know, I think there have been perhaps more, you know, talented players in the past in, in certain areas. You know, like Kevin Durant was a way more talented scorer. You know, we knew. I think a lot of people believed when he came out of Texas that he was going to lead the league in scoring one day. But you know, Flag's not a guy you're saying, okay, he's going to lead the league in scoring, but he does everything well. And I there are certainly areas where he can improve and probably needs to improve. I think his shooting consistency can and and needs to improve. Although it improved during the year. You know, he shot 44 from three during ACC play. The ACC wasn't the best it's ever been this year but, you know, you can see he was getting better and better, and I think he can tighten his handle up and become a better ball handler and decision maker. But across the board, it's really rare to find a player that checks so many boxes like he's. He's arguably better defensively than he offensively, and he's really formidable on the offensive end. He's just a. He's really a complete player at just 18 and a half, and that's like he should still be in high school. There are, There are guys that played in the McDonald's game this last year. Most of the players on the McDonald's All America team this year were older than Cooper Flat.
Marv Albert
And also the situation he's going into. A lot of times when you're that savior or supposed to be a savior, number one pick and you go to a bad team because, you know, that's why they got the opportunity to draft you. He's going to Dallas. How does that work for him and may. I don't know if it works against him, but the benefits of going to Dallas.
Dan Patrick
No, it works for him because he's going to be around veteran players that are hall of Fame caliber players and future hall of Famers that are true pros. So he's not going to be expected to kind of pick up the reins and sort of lead the team and run with the team. He can, he can blend in with anybody. Like, they can play him almost anywhere. And, you know, he kind of reminds me his competitive makeup is really unusual. He's. He's different. Like, there are a lot of guys that are really competitive. You know, I hate to lose and all that stuff and want to win at checkers. I'll, you know, run over my little sister to win at this. But he, he takes advantage of every opportunity, and he doesn't go into a game thinking, I'm going to get 25 in this one. He just wants to make the right play right now. And then when he stacks those, by the end of the game, you know, he'll have 25 and 12 rebounds and six assists and three steals and two blocks. He's that kind of player. So I don't doubt that he's gonna, you know, with his maturity level at that age, that he's going to figure it out and, and learn how to, to operate with within the. The confines of a really good team. I think that's a huge factor for him. And his development is he's going to a team that's going to contend as soon as Kyrie gets healthy.
Marv Albert
Who's the next best player in this draft?
Dan Patrick
Dylan Harper of Rutgers. I mean he's the, he's the second best prospect left handed. He's got size, really good length. He's got like a 610 wingspan. He's probably 6, 4, 6 5. But he really good at pick and roll. He's the best pick and roll guard in this draft and can get into the lane. He makes plays at the rim. He's physical and so he can take, he can absorb a shot and still make a play. You know, he splits defenders. He can read when his reads are really good. But 75 of his points, this is not a negative. 75 of his points came unassisted. He had to do a lot on his own. He played with another great talent in Ace Bailey, but they didn't have much more than that. So he had to, he really had to. They had a losing record. They're 15 and 17, they're 8 and 10 in the, in the Big Ten. You know, they barely made the Big Ten tournament. So you know he's going to face a couple questions about, you know, you had two lottery picks on your team, how'd you not win more? But, but he, he's, he's the real deal. He's really good and I can't imagine San Antonio trading that pick. I think they're taking him even though they need shooting and he's not a great shooter. He makes shots but he's not a knockdown shooter. I think he'll improve there. I just can't imagine anybody else going.
Marv Albert
To con Knipple maybe moving into the top five.
Dan Patrick
I think he's been there for a while. You know, it's. A lot of people have said the draft starts at three with Philly, so they could be, it could be Vijay edgecombe from Baylor, 19 year old freshman from the Bahamas who's kind of a, reminds me a lot of Victor Oladipo or like a Dwyane Wade at 19. Not saying, you know, he's, he's there, you know, he's those guys when they were, you know, in the NBA. But if you compare him at 19, he confer compares really favorably. Like super athletic, think gets to the rim, can really guard, gets a lot done on defense, a lot of deflections, steals, stuff like that. I think he had 15 games with multiple steals and had set a freshman record of Baylor for steals. And then you know, you could see Knipple. That's possible because he's the best. He's the best shooter in the draft, but, but I, I make a kind of a qualification. He's the best standstill shooter, so 48 from corner threes. He catches it to shoot it. He doesn't catch it ready to shoot. He catches it to fire it up and you got to take it away from him. And he shot great percentages. But, you know, Ace Bailey is the next most talented player after Harper, who is. It was Harper's teammate at Rutgers. And he's a really tough shot maker. Like he can make really challenge. He makes NBA shots right now at age, age 18. He's just barely older than Cooper Flagg. Really, really young. But there are some question marks. You know, people say maturity canceled some workouts, stuff like that, which might not have been the most professional thing to do. I don't have a problem with him not going to workouts. You don't want to go to workout and you're content being drafted a little lower, that's fine. It's your money. But if you, if you schedule a workout, you should show up for it. And he, a couple, you know, maybe once or twice didn't do that. And I think that gets people a little, little nervous.
Marv Albert
And I'm wondering the strategy behind this because it feels like their strategy that Ace Bailey's not going to go to Philadelphia. There's certain teams he's not going to work out for, and I don't know if that means they are still going to draft him or does he want to land with Washington or Brooklyn or is somebody going to swoop in and say, hey, we can get a bargain here? What do you think the logic is here?
Dan Patrick
I don't really know. I've heard that's the logic, that he'd rather go to a place like Washington or New Orleans Orlands or our Brooklyn. But that's a lot of money you're giving up just by, you know, from three to six or, you know, who knows, maybe he goes number eight. That that can happen. I don't, I don't have a problem. Look, if he wants to give up the money, that's his business. I don't, you know, I don't care. Do whatever you want. But. But your point is, is correct. Like that doesn't stop Philly from taking him at number three. If he's the most talented player. I take him. If you, if you're convinced that he's the most talented and he's the sort of. Has the most upside and he does at that spot got the most potential, but it's one of These risk, reward things. So you hear people say, well, you know, he's one of those dangerous guys that if you take him and it doesn't work out, you get fired. And if you don't take him and he turns out to be a great player, you get fired. And you're like, well, I mean, I don't know what to tell you. You know, it's the old Hyman Roth line from the Godfather. This is the business we've chosen. I'm sorry, you got the. You got that pick. If you take them, don't take them, you know, but everybody's got a chance to get fired.
Marv Albert
Jay Billis said the mothership draft coverage starts at 7 Eastern on ESPN, 8 o' clock on ABC. We came up with a nickname for Cooper Flag. You ready?
Dan Patrick
I'm ready.
Marv Albert
Okay. He's from Maine, and we thought the rarest of lobsters is the White Lobster, so he would have his logo of a lobster. So he's the White Lobster.
Dan Patrick
Wow, that's interesting. And I noticed you said we, so you have collective credit. That's so profoundly stupid. It sounds like Paulie came up with it.
Paul Pabst
Wow, Jay.
Marv Albert
Yeah, you're right. He did. Nailed it, you know. You know, profound stupidity. It was very quick when you hit it. Yeah, yeah, he's right there. He hit on it right away. So the White Polly.
Dan Patrick
I was listening during the break.
Marv Albert
So white lobsters, that was.
Dan Patrick
That was a cheat code.
Marv Albert
Yeah. I was trying to take a little bit of credit there, but then I wasn't going to take any blame.
Paul Pabst
Yes, Paul, Jay, let it marinate a little bit. Don't be so rushed to make the decision.
Marv Albert
The white lobster.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, well, yeah, marinate a little butter sauce. There you go.
Marv Albert
Yeah. Okay.
Dan Patrick
I do. You know, he has been called the main event.
Marv Albert
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Malika Andrews asked him about it, and he said, well, I like it. I just can't imagine somebody calling me that to my face. And, you know, being a Duke guy, he's probably called a lot of things to his face that he doesn't like, but I don't know if we have to force it. Like, I was just up in Maine at a charity event and. And he's a God there. Like, if he walked down the street right next to Taylor Swift, people would knock Taylor Swift over to get to him. Oh, that's how big of a deal he is in Maine. And it's really pretty remarkable that. That sort of quiet state. They're obviously incredibly proud. But. But he, like, I. I don't. I don't think I've seen anything quite like that. The entire state. All they talk about is Cooper Flag. And I couldn't walk down the street without getting Cooper Flag questions. It was really kind of amazing.
Marv Albert
Okay, I want you to close your eyes and just envision this with the upcoming season. Kevin Harlan with the call.
Wells Fargo Representative
The White Lobster is on a roll. He just put it in the Biscuit again. A 174 run. And the Hawks want to talk about it.
Marv Albert
This is the NBA on tnt now. You can open your eyes.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, I'm unmoved.
Marv Albert
Okay.
Dan Patrick
I don't. I don't see that. I don't see that sticking.
Marv Albert
Okay, fair enough.
Dan Patrick
I do have a. I do. I was asked a trivia question recently that got my head scratching.
Marv Albert
Okay.
Dan Patrick
The last American born white player to.
Marv Albert
Go number one overall, Kent Benson.
Dan Patrick
Very good. That was off the top of your head or had you researched that?
Marv Albert
Well, how am I doing? You just asked me the question. I didn't know the question before to do my research. Well, yeah, but I wasn't listening when you were told this.
Dan Patrick
If I would have looked it up, you know, like thought about it. But when I was asked a couple months ago, I. I was scratching my head going back, but Ken Benson is exactly right. I went toward Bill Walton.
Marv Albert
Yeah. But I follow the game a little closer than you do. Especially college Jay. Okay. I mean, Mark Allery, I think, was drafted by the Bullets, wasn't he?
Dan Patrick
No, he was drafted by the Denver Nuggets. He went number 16 overall.
Marv Albert
Did he play for the Bullets?
Dan Patrick
So he went to the Nuggets.
Marv Albert
Did he eventually play for the Bullets?
Dan Patrick
Yeah, he was traded to Bullets, so. And still lives in the Washington area. Lives in Bethesda now.
Marv Albert
Yeah. Okay. And his daughter, one of his daughters, really good in college, I think.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. His daughter Bella was an All American at Princeton, was the fifth overall pick of the Dallas Wings in the WNBA draft. And now she's an assistant. She's my goddaughter now, an assistant coach at Georgetown.
Marv Albert
Okay. Yeah. Has the Nil ERA been good for college basketball?
Dan Patrick
Yeah. It certainly made it more honest. I know some of the old school coaches don't like it. And the NCAA is still, you know, fighting the idea of calling athletes employees. They don't want to do that. But it looks like, you know, my stance on this. This has been professional sports for a long time and they've been violating federal antitrust law by limiting the players. They're still violating it with this new settlement. But at least the new settlement gives the NCAA some time to come. Up with a framework that's going to work long term, and that is either going to be, in my view, collective bargaining with the players or going to Congress and asking Congress to make this House settlement into law for them. But it's not going to look exactly like the House settlement. I can't imagine a scenario where Congress says, yes, we're willing to limit the players, but coaches, you can still make 10, $12 million, and we'll call this. We'll call this day. Like, everybody's going to be limited if that. If Congress comes in. But. But it buys them some time to actually get this thing right. But what it's doing, Dan, I think it's keeping more players in school longer, which is what the system says. They've always, you know, if you believe in education, they're getting more education and the schools are benefiting because they're getting more years of service out of their. Out of their player assets. So I don't think it's. It's anything but a good thing. And the players are becoming not only financially literate, they can. They can have generational wealth from this if they do it the right way. You're still going to have some players that blow the money or whatever that's going to happen. But I think it's nothing but a good thing. They just have to figure out the structure of it to make it work for everybody.
Marv Albert
We were reminiscing of players we thought coming out of college were going to be hall of Famers, like Glenn Robinson. We just thought, that guy can't miss. There were certain guys where you go, okay, that guy is going to be incredible. Give me the guy that you whiffed on that you go, that guy is going to be a Hall of Famer.
Dan Patrick
That I whiffed on. Well, I thought Odin was going to be really good, and I do think it was because of injury. I just don't know of. Of any teams that wouldn't have taken him. Number one in 07, maybe there might have been one or two. And I don't remember a whole lot of us talking heads, shaking our fists, saying, this is crazy. You have to take Kevin Durant. There might have been some of those, but I don't remember very many. But, yeah, that was a whiff. And that's. That's probably one of the things that. This is my 23rd draft, and I think when I first started doing it, I probably arrogantly thought, after doing all this work that I. I knew, you know, I. I know that whether this player is going to be good or not. And maybe having my first draft be the LeBron draft where you did know by, you know, now I believe certain things, but you know, everybody that nobody knows, like, you know, hands up all those that thought that Shea Gilgis Alexander, when he was taken 11th overall was going to be an MVP or when Nicola Jokic was taken during a Taco Bell commercial, we were in commercial and it was a Taco Bell commercial. And he got drafted in the 40s and now he's considered the best player in the world. We don't know. You do the best you can and you have players you like and players you question and some of the players you question turn out to be great and some of the players you like turn out to be less than that. It's a weird process, but we're going to look back this year and say how did we miss on ace renewal or stuff like that. That's going to happen too.
Marv Albert
The former Dallas Maverick great Jay Billis. More of Jay tonight where he probably drops in White Lobster. I'm just guessing right now. Just guessing. There is a casual mention of the White Lobster tonight and you don't have to give credit. You can take all the credit. You can take credit.
Dan Patrick
Unless it blows. Unless it blows up completely. I'll go. This was Paul Leaves.
Marv Albert
Thank you, Jay.
Dan Patrick
Thank you always.
Marv Albert
That's Jay Billis, covers college basketball for the mothership. It's a two night affair and starts at 7 Eastern on ESPN and then 8 Eastern on ABC. All right, so we, we put it out there. White Lobster, you gotta take swings. Get the B52s to do rock Lobsters. His theme song. You know, work on it. I mean, I don't know if people were signed up for the Greek Freak. You know when that happened? Yeah, the Stifled Tower with Rudy Gobert.
Paul Pabst
It's so good.
Marv Albert
Oh, that is it. That is a great. That's a great nickname. Not my favorite player, but that's one of my favorite nicknames.
Paul Pabst
Yes, Paulie, I found an article from the Milwaukee Bucks. Nobody's really sure where Greek Free came from. It came around early in his career, but even he doesn't know. We're gonna keep looking to that.
Marv Albert
We'll take a break. We'll get some phone calls here. Coming up, did the NFL do something bad? Did they get caught doing something bad with their owners? That's coming up. Top of the hour. Back after this.

Wait a minute, we need some music here. There we go. Oh, yeah, yeah. It's coming back with NBC's coverage of the NBA with Michael Jordan.
Paul Pabst
With Michael Jordan.
Marv Albert
Yes. It's NBC's coverage of the NBA with Michael Jordan. More NBC's coverage of Michael Jordan with the NBA. All right, Paul.
Paul Pabst
Okay. Who is the youngest NBA player ever drafted? The date, their age, the night they were drafted.
Marv Albert
For instance, Mike Lebron is younger at being drafted than Cooper Flagg, isn't he?
Paul Pabst
Yes. LeBron James is 18th all time in age.
Marv Albert
18Th.
Paul Pabst
Yes. There's a lot of guys. LeBron was 18 years and 178 days old when he is drafted. Cooper Flag is 18 years and like 181.
Marv Albert
What about Luca?
Paul Pabst
Luca? I don't have him in the top 20.
Marv Albert
Yes. You know who I think was super young? Jermaine o' Neal. He was, I think he was really young. Is he 17?
Paul Pabst
Jermaine O' Neal is in the top 10. He is actually second all time.
Marv Albert
Good call. Jermaine O' Neal is a youngster.
Paul Pabst
Jermaine O' Neill, 17 years, 256 days. There are only three players that were in their 17s when they were drafted. So you got one of them.
Marv Albert
Okay. Dwight Howard.
Paul Pabst
Dwight Howard. No, he was in his 18s.
Memphis Bleak
Marvin Kobe.
Paul Pabst
Kobe is correct. Kobe is third all time. 17 years, 307 days.
Memphis Bleak
Days.
Marv Albert
We're missing numero uno.
Paul Pabst
I'm not going to give you a hint yet. Some other candidates. Tracy McGrady was 18. Amir Johnson was 18. Oh, a bunch of other like players. Al Harrington went to the Pacers. Okay, 18.
Marv Albert
All right.
Paul Pabst
Andre Karolinko was in the 18.
Marv Albert
Andre Karolenko.
Paul Pabst
Daryl Dawkins, one of the first 18 year olds. Draft. Okay. This guy was 17 years and 245 days old when he was drafted by in the 2005 draft, he was the 10th overall pick by the Lakers.
Wells Fargo Representative
Oh, God.
Marv Albert
Yes.
Memphis Bleak
Andrew Bynum.
Paul Pabst
Andrew bynum is correct. 17 years, 245 days. He had eight seasons in the bigs. He averaged 11 and 7. He had a couple good years. Never got there.
Marv Albert
Wasn't he part of the reason why Kobe wanted to go to Chicago? Like, didn't he want to. To get away from Andrew Bynum, among other things? Yes, yes, yes. Yeah, like, Kobe was ready to go to Chicago.
Paul Pabst
That was our first week on air. That was our first week on air. Yes. That was October 2007. Our first week of air. I have the rundowns. The entire week we spent talking about the rumors that Kobe Bryant would be traded to the Bulls. And the sticking point was Ben Gordon.
Marv Albert
Yeah, Ben Gordon.
Paul Pabst
A different time.
Marv Albert
Dang. Dylan in Michigan. Hi, Dylan. What's on your mind today? Hey, y' all. First time, long time, 5 11, 180. And second, would be really cool to get a birthday shout out for my dad, Kurt, who passed away a couple years ago. He is and was and always will be a fan of you guys. All right. Happy birthday. Happy birthday. Making dreams come true. It's all about content. Todd, Don in Iowa. Hi, Don. What's on your mind today?
Dan Patrick
Hey, Dan. 62150. Hey, Dan. How is this? You guys are talking about your most. Some loyal players. I was wondering who you guys most loyal player that you've ever seen for any sport. My top three would be Joe Mauer, Mike Trout, and then Jerry West.
Marv Albert
Well, it depends on when you're talking about loyalty. You know, what are you. What are you equating that to? Because I remember Tony Gwynn could have made more money by acting like he wanted to leave the Padres, but I remember him saying, look, I don't want to go anywhere. And the players association goes, no, no, no. You got to jack up, you know, salaries here. And he didn't want to leave a Cal Ripken with the Orioles. But, you know, playing your entire career, a lot of guys didn't have the opportunity to play elsewhere. Like, you were locked into teams and you can call it loyalty. Now, I don't think Jerry west was going to go, hey, I want to be traded to the Knicks. But I remember Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken. Yes, Marv, Modern era.
Memphis Bleak
You probably see Dirk.
Marv Albert
Yeah, yeah. He might have looked around and said, I might not win a title and leave, but you know, that one time you win that one title with that team, I mean, never, ever, ever forget you. Yes, Paulie.
Paul Pabst
I'll throw out a loyalty guy. And it's weird because he's played for a bunch of teams now. I can remember walking in one day here and Kevin Durant quietly signed a second contract with okc. Yeah, the guy just won, like, his second straight scoring title and could have gone anywhere. And we came in, he's like, oh, he just signed a new force.
Marv Albert
He had his little backpack on.
Dan Patrick

Marv Albert
Yeah, yeah, yeah. I did the show that day.

Summary of "The Dan Patrick Show" – Hour 2: Aaron Rodgers Last Season, Jay Bilas
Release Date: June 25, 2025
Introduction
In the second hour of "The Dan Patrick Show," hosted by Dan Patrick from the iHeartPodcasts and Dan Patrick Podcast Network, listeners are treated to an in-depth discussion centered around NFL superstar Aaron Rodgers, contemplating his potential final season. Additionally, the episode features insights from NBA analyst Jay Bilas, delving into draft prospects and the evolving landscape of professional sports. The conversation is enriched with expert opinions, engaging debates, and notable quotes that provide listeners with a comprehensive understanding of current sports dynamics.
Aaron Rodgers’ Potential Final Season
The episode kicks off with a reflection on Aaron Rodgers' recent statements regarding his career. Rodgers has hinted at the possibility of retiring after one final season, aiming to conclude his illustrious career on a high note. This sentiment is captured vividly in his own words:
Notable Quote (03:39):
Aaron Rodgers: “...this was really about finishing with a lot of love and fun and peace for the career that I've had. I mean I played 20 frickin years. It's been a long, a long run and I've enjoyed it...”
Dan Patrick and Marv Albert dissect Rodgers' decision, analyzing the implications for both the quarterback and the Pittsburgh Steelers. Albert raises pertinent questions about the team's future and their strategy in potentially seeking a new quarterback if Rodgers decides to retire.
Notable Quote (04:09):
Marv Albert: “I think bigger picture. It's more important to me is Mike Tomlin because Mike and the Steelers signed up for one year... And I wonder if, if they go out like they don't win another, they don't win a playoff game, then you start to look at this and say, do we need a change?”
The discussion highlights Rodgers' desire to exit the league gracefully, emphasizing his wish to leave behind a legacy of success and camaraderie.
Jay Bilas on NBA Draft Prospects
Transitioning from the NFL, the conversation shifts to the NBA, where Jay Bilas provides his expert analysis on upcoming draft prospects. The focus is on burgeoning talents like Cooper Flagg and Dylan Harper, assessing their potential impact on their respective teams.
Cooper Flagg: The "White Lobster"
One of the standout discussions revolves around Cooper Flagg, a highly touted draft prospect from Duke. Bilas and Patrick delve into Flagg's versatility and readiness for professional play, dubbing him the "White Lobster" due to his Maine roots and unique skill set.
Notable Quote (32:44):
Marv Albert: “So white lobsters, that was. And they think the rarest of lobsters is the White Lobster, so he would have his logo of a lobster. So he's the White Lobster.”
Bilas praises Flagg's comprehensive abilities, noting his defensive prowess and balanced offensive game. They also speculate on the strategic advantages his drafting would bring to teams looking for a multifaceted guard.
Dylan Harper: A Promising Guard
Another focal point is Dylan Harper from Rutgers, whom Bilas identifies as the second-best prospect in the draft. Harper's physical attributes and pick-and-roll proficiency make him a desirable pick for teams seeking depth and versatility.
Notable Quote (27:42):
Dan Patrick: “Dylan Harper of Rutgers. I mean he's the second best prospect left-handed. He's got size, really good length...”
The analysis covers Harper's strengths and potential areas for improvement, such as shooting consistency and decision-making, providing listeners with a nuanced view of his draft prospects.
Denver Nuggets’ Championship Analysis
The episode also features a detailed critique of the Denver Nuggets' championship run, focusing on the team's bench depth and overall performance. Caller insights and expert opinions highlight the sustainability of their success amidst player changes.
Notable Quote (12:11):
Memphis Bleak: “After they won the championship, that off season, they lost Reggie Jackson, their backup point guard, they lost KCP, and they lost Bruce Brown. So that's three big contributors off of that championship team.”
Marv Albert and Memphis Bleak debate whether the Nuggets' bench depth was a significant factor in their championship and ponder the team's ability to defend their title given the loss of key players.
Player Loyalty in Modern Sports
The discussion broadens to encompass the theme of player loyalty, referencing legendary athletes like Jerry West, Tony Gwynn, and Dirk Nowitzki. The conversation explores the balance between staying with a single team and seeking championships elsewhere, reflecting on how this dynamic has evolved in contemporary sports.
Notable Quote (51:52):
Marv Albert: “You probably see Dirk. Yeah, yeah, yeah. He might have looked around and said, I might not win a title and leave, but you know, that one time you win that one title with that team, I mean, never, ever, ever forget you.”
The dialogue underscores the emotional and professional factors influencing players' decisions to remain loyal to their teams or pursue new opportunities.
Impact of NCAA NIL Rules on College Basketball
Marv Albert offers his perspective on the recent Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) rule changes in the NCAA, assessing their impact on college basketball and the broader implications for student-athletes.
