You are listening to the Dan Patrick show on Fox Sports Radio Hour 2 on this Friday and Yes, it is a meat Friday even though we got up early. And as Seaton says, you don't have to wait till lunch to have meat Friday. We have brisket, we have barbecue chicken, potato salad, baked beans. Who has it better than we do? Good morning. If you're watching on Peacock, our streaming partner and NBC, they set us up right by the driving range here, Lake Tahoe. As the event gets underway, we'll talk to Alex Caruso, Oklahoma City Thunder guard. The great comedian Nate Borgetzi will join us. And Rob McElhenney, he is always sunny in Philadelphia and co owner of Wrexham. So that'll be coming up. 8773 DP show. Get a couple of phone calls in. We did talk to Charles Barkley. If you miss any interviews, you can always go to danpatrick.com Charles always entertaining when he tells stories. You know, he was there in the locker room when Bird comes in with that three point shooting contest when he says, hey, which one of you bleep bleep bleeps are playing for second place? And Charles was in there trying to hype up one of his teammates, Leon Wood. And he said there was silence. When Bird walks in, first thing he says, he opens the locker room door. Which one of you bleeps is playing for second place? And Charles goes, it was quiet. Nobody said anything back to him. And then Bird, of course, went out and won that contest. Seaton, what's the poll question for hour two, by the way? We did spend a little bit of time talking about. We took a victory lap and rightfully so. We dominated on celebrity Family Feud last night as we crushed the Rich Eisen show, as you would come to expect, that Marvin and Fritzi were great. Fritzi is in London on vacation. We're, we tracked him down and I think he's going to join us a little bit later on. And he was great. He was a lot of fun. He did a impersonation of Steve Harvey that Steve Harvey even acknowledged that he was going to give that to Todd. That's all Fritz he needed. And Marv, Marv was great as well. But congratulations to all the Dan ads and all of Dan nation for this. Seaton, you did a good job too.
Greg Rosenthal
I did do a good job.
Dan Patrick
I crushed.
Greg Rosenthal
Yeah, I know, I know I did.
Dan Patrick
Maybe I sound like I, I expected you to be good. Maybe I'm surprised that Marvin and Fritzi were good. Maybe that's how this is coming off. And I don't mean it that way. You guys are, you know, you, you held Your own up there, and you made yourself proud. Yes, Marvin. So was this like, hey, Michael Jordan, you won MVP award.
Alex Caruso
Duh.
Dan Patrick
Hey, Tom Chambers, you finished the second. Great. I don't know if it was that. So Seaton's not like the Michael Jordan. No. I would say that maybe Fritzi was the Michael Jordan of our team. Yes.
Greg Rosenthal
I will say, though, because there's four rounds. If we lose the fourth round, even.
Alex Caruso
Though we won the previous two, all.
Greg Rosenthal
The points go to his team. Rich Eisenstein, when we lose. And Seton, the category was what gets more value as it goes.
Dan Patrick
He got wine when he was up.
Greg Rosenthal
There, so he got the category, and then there was only two more answers left, and he was up next, and he got art, and that was it.
Alex Caruso
And that put us in the final.
Dan Patrick
Round, but technically won the game for us.
Greg Rosenthal
Technically, I won the whole thing, but that's okay.
Alex Caruso
Don't worry about it.
Dan Patrick
Paulie, you were there, too.
Greg Rosenthal
I was there.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Greg Rosenthal
Mop it up.
Dan Patrick
All right. Yes. Marvin, Does Fritz. He get the nod because he did fast money. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. And, you know. And, you know, it's stressful. It was gonna go either way. Yes. But Fritzi loves game shows, and, you know, so I was trying to tap into his whole on stage, and he was ready to go, and he was fired up. He was. But they take him backstage. So when I give my answers for fast money at the very end, they take him backstage. So obviously, he doesn't hear the questions, but he comes out, and he's ready to go. He was fired up. Daniel in Tennessee. Hey, Daniel, what's on your mind today?
Greg Rosenthal
Hey, dan.
Dan Patrick
Long time listener.
Greg Rosenthal
5, 9, 1 8.
Dan Patrick
Just want to talk about Family feud.
Greg Rosenthal
You know, I think.
Dan Patrick
I think Fritz, he really stole the.
Greg Rosenthal
Show there in fast money, I think.
Dan Patrick
You know, what did he get? Four out of the five questions were number one. He didn't even need the fifth one. He didn't even need that for the 200 points. Yeah. Even these strawberries. And I think, really, Seaton coming in clutch in that final round really goes underappreciated. You know, I know you guys were.
Greg Rosenthal
Harping on him a little bit, but.
Dan Patrick
I think that really goes underappreciated. And I did have a question after. After every answer that Fritz, he gave, you gave him a little look, almost a very stern look. Was that intentional just for the show, or is that just you being you to Fritzi? Thanks. I don't. I don't know. I don't remember what my body language was with Fritzi because He gave good answers. I think so. I, I don't think I would have been like, how. You know that's stupid to say that. Yes. Mark. None of us gave like stupid answers where Steve Harvey was just gonna tear us apart. Yeah, everyone. Even the wrong answers. Like, even Paulie had the convertible.
Greg Rosenthal
I did a vintage automobiles. He goes, oh, good answer. And.
Dan Patrick
And it was wrong. I got it wrong. Yeah.
Greg Rosenthal
And I was like, I was shocked. And he was. I didn't feel bad. Like, it wasn't up there, but it felt like a good answer.
Dan Patrick
Yes. Yeah, it was.
Greg Rosenthal
That wasn't a bad answer. There were a few that I was surprised.
Dan Patrick
Like the, the example that you just gave him, like, dang, that's not up there. Really? Yeah. Because cars, I would think, I mean, you would know better, but like, they tend to get higher in appreciation value. Yeah.
Greg Rosenthal
Certain ones, you know, high end ones.
Dan Patrick
I know, I know. But yeah, we, we took home the victory and thank you for all the, the outpouring of support that we got from last night's celebrity family feud. Oklahoma City Thunder guard Alex Caruso won a title with the Lakers and of course won one with okc. Stopped by yesterday to the show and I asked him if he ever walks around casually with his headband on.
Greg Rosenthal
No.
Alex Caruso
And a couple people yesterday were disappointed I didn't wear it. I told them that's just an in season thing.
Dan Patrick
It's almost like they need that to recognize you.
Alex Caruso
You'd be surprised. There's a couple times I'll go out and like, I'll walk through public and I'll do stuff and like, people have to like, you know, hit the double take real quick. I didn't recognize you without the headband. Like, yeah, well, I'll just live with the headband on. I can't, I can't go to HEB with a headband.
Dan Patrick
You know, how has life changed? You've won a title before, but winning a title in LA in a bubble. But winning a title in okc. The difference in reaction of fans.
Alex Caruso
Yeah, I think honestly the reaction of fans was, was pretty similar.
Dan Patrick
The.
Alex Caruso
Somebody asked me this question the other day and I tried to explain, you know, because that's the thing. Everyone always tries to like pit the two against each other. For me, they try to like, say which one was harder, which one was better, like, you enjoyed more. And I was like, first of all, it's a championship. Like, it's the peak. So, like, they're both the best. But it was like a different set of circumstances and challenges with Each one. And the only thing that I, I am maybe not regret, but like, I wish we could have experienced was the parade in la. Because the parade, the parade in OKC was, was unbelievable. The, the city, the fans, all that stuff. Like how many people were out there at every single stop. I know, I know LA would have been like that, you know, maybe even, you know, a tiny bit more. Just because LA is a little crazy.
Dan Patrick
You're a little more experienced than most of the guys on your roster. So I don't know, you're like the guy who the kids hang out the liquor store and the grown up asking.
Alex Caruso
To buy a beer.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. You got guys who didn't know how to open champagne.
Alex Caruso
Yeah, no, that was a bad. It was a bad first experience. We did have a joke. We were like, all right, that's fine. We just have to go win it again. So it will be better. Round two, player B. You know, something like that.
Dan Patrick
If, if somebody didn't watch you guys play, how would you say, how would you describe Oklahoma City style?
Alex Caruso
Oklahoma City style is aggressive, fast pace, unselfish, sacrificial. Like we do all the things that great teams do, you know, all those things that the winning team, winning teams do.
Dan Patrick
And you got to buy into defense. Yeah.
Alex Caruso
You got to go, you got to guard to win championships.
Dan Patrick
But that's hard to convince. Everybody wants to be star. Everybody wants their touches.
Alex Caruso
Get paid.
Dan Patrick
Yes. And guys don't necessarily get paid playing good defense. Well, I mean, you can, you can. Yeah.
Alex Caruso
Tip of the cap. Some people do.
Dan Patrick
Yes, Tip of the cap to you. But you had to make a conscious decision.
Alex Caruso
Yeah. The team.
Dan Patrick
This is what I do. This is who we can be if we want to be this. And you're trying to convince kids.
Alex Caruso
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
To do that.
Alex Caruso
Yeah. I mean, that. The credit for that goes to Mark and Sam and the organization. Because that's been like, that's been a focal point for us, at least for the year. You know, from the moment I stepped in the door this last year was, you know, if we want to achieve greatness and get to the end, we have to do it together. And it has to be playing for each other and playing defense like that has to be what it is. And from that, you know, I think, I think there's enough examples throughout the history of basketball and throughout the league, if you win, everybody gets paid. Like even that team in, in 2020 that won the chip with us for the Lakers, like, a couple guys didn't get brought back, but like, they, they got Paid other ways. Like Rondo is a. Rondo was like almost out the door, you know, for three, four years in the league and then comes and plays great for us. Signs like a 3 or $30 million deal on the end of his end of his career. KCP got paid again. Danny Green found a couple more contracts that javale found. Like everybody on a championship team gets an opportunity and gets paid. And I think just convincing the team that that was how it was going to be was, it was unique too. Just to be able to, like you said, with such young guys that all have big aspirations and big, you know, goals and ambitions for the league. Really impressive.
Dan Patrick
You know, obviously he's Alex Caruso, the champion Oklahoma City Thunder. So explain to me Oklahoma City Blues, South Bay Lakers. And then like at what point do you go, it's clicking or they're recognizing that it's clicking that now you're going to play in the NBA.
Alex Caruso
Yeah, I think I tell people this a lot. There was a time at the end of my first year on Two Ways with the Lakers where I, you know, it's one of those things where we're not going to make the playoffs. They're playing all the young guys, two way guys. And I have, I have a couple really good games. Like I have maybe one or two double doubles, starting point guard, like I'm getting Double digit points, 6, 7, 8 assists, guarding well. And I'm like, oh, this is it. Like I'm, I'm an NBA player. Like this is where I'm supposed to be. And in my mind, not knowing the business of basketball, I was like, all right, they're going to convert this two way contract to a standard contract. I'm not going to be on two Way next year. That's not how it works. You know, it's cheap labor. If you got somebody under contract, you keep it there. You know, you don't spend more money than you have to. So then that next year, same thing went through the year, played at the end of the year on two Way. Had to talk with my agent afterwards. I was like, I'm playing good. Like I'm surely, like, I'm not going to. He's like, no, you're good. Like you're going to get a standard NBA contract. And I asked him, I was like, am I going to have to play summer league again? He said, oh no. So we're, we're good on that. So from that point on, I was like, all right, we got a spot in the league. Now it's time to like, keep progressing.
Dan Patrick
What's it like to guard Shai Gil, Juice Alexander?
Alex Caruso
Difficult. Very difficult. Thankfully I didn't have to this year.
Dan Patrick
Anybody compare to him?
Alex Caruso
Yeah, you know, he's, he's a pretty unique guy. I think, I think some of, some of how James Harden was his MVP years. You know, obviously he's not shooting threes like James and I think a lot of that helped him kind of get downhill, but like his ability to just get by people and then the length he has to finish and shoot in the mid range a little bit like James in his, in his MVP years. But, but I mean even then he, like, he works off the body like Kyrie really well too. Like he has a little bit of like mid range Kyrie package and then finishing left. Right. That, that reminds me a lot of those two guys.
Dan Patrick
And those guys invite contact. Have to like Luca, like I'm gonna use the contact to my advantage.
Alex Caruso
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
And people don't realize how big these guys, like thick. These guys are athletes.
Alex Caruso
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Alex Caruso
Pro athletes.
Dan Patrick
Who would say, who, who kept you up at night? Like, if you go, oh, there's plenty.
Alex Caruso
Of guys, I mean, but is there.
Dan Patrick
One there or, or two where you go, God, this gonna be a long night?
Alex Caruso
She was like that. Shea was one of those. It's, it's, it's usually the high volume guys, you know, like the, the Lucas, the, the Shays, the Devin Bookers, Steph.
Dan Patrick
But you know, they're going to score. But how does that not affect you where you get a little down?
Alex Caruso
Yeah, no, you have to have amnesia a little bit. Like you have to know is the best. You're going to guard the best player. Like they're going to get their average. If you do their job, if you do your job correctly through the night, they're going to get one to two points below their average to their average. And if you don't, they'll have 40 or 50 or 60 and then you're on SportsCenter every highlight for the rest of the year. So it's.
Dan Patrick
It.
Alex Caruso
Honestly for me, it was like, it's a lot of pride and it's a lot of almost like not anxiety, but like there's no safety net, you know, like you have to be, you have to be sharp. You have to be on your game or else you're going to get embarrassed. And getting embarrassed isn't fun in front of 18,000 people.
Dan Patrick
Okay, Steph is bringing the ball up.
Alex Caruso
I'm already guarding him. I'm not. Yeah, I'm not waiting for him. You can't wait for him.
Dan Patrick
You go to get him.
Alex Caruso
Yeah. Because if you wait for him now, he's coming with pace. He's going to throw it to Draymond and run.
Dan Patrick
And you're late, but you've got to run with him.
Alex Caruso
Yeah, right.
Dan Patrick
He's constant.
Alex Caruso
That's. That's the biggest thing that people talk about. I don't know if regular NBA fans understand is like, scouting. Reporting him is. He's most dangerous when he gives the ball up, because even when he comes down, he gives the ball up. Like, now all of a sudden, they're going to movement. Him and Draymond are so connected. Like, he. He knows exactly where to go, how to make the reads. And as a defender, I always think that people set illegal screens. They got away with. They get away with their couple.
Dan Patrick
Draymond's been known to do that.
Alex Caruso
Yeah, that's. That's the NBA hard on our team. Hartenstein says some pretty good ones, too.
Dan Patrick
But how's guarding LeBron?
Alex Caruso
Yeah, that's different, too, because he just tries to post me up because he's 6, 8, 260 pounds, and that's like 70 pounds lighter than or heavier than I am. He's also. I didn't get to guard him when he was like, you know, freak LeBron, like, he's. He's obviously, like, he's on year 20 something now. Like, he is a more refined game still. Still can, like, go up and play above the rim. But I've noticed that with me, he. He goes to the post game right away. Yeah, because he's. He's not moving laterally quick enough and downhill quick enough for how I like to guard, because I'm going to climb up into the ball a little bit. But once he gets to the post, it.
Dan Patrick
It's a challenge. Anybody you meet here in Tahoe that you were looking forward to meet?
Alex Caruso
I met Colin Jost in the. In the. In the gym this morning. That was fun. I got to meet some of the other guys.
Dan Patrick
He's kind of jacked a little bit. Yeah.
Alex Caruso
I mean, for. For a regular human being. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. For a normal non. Ath. I won't say non athletics. He's playing golf, but a guy that's not a professional athlete.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, I know what you mean.
Alex Caruso
You know. You know what I mean. You know what I mean.
Dan Patrick
Who do you think benches more, you or him?
Alex Caruso
Probably him.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Alex Caruso
Yeah, I don't bench a lot. I'm not going to lie. That's not my specialty. That's not what I get paid to do.
Dan Patrick
Congrats. Another championship there and you found a home.
Alex Caruso
Try and run it back again next year.
Dan Patrick
Thank you.
Alex Caruso
Appreciate you guys.
Dan Patrick
That's Alex Caruso and he has some swag. I mean, like he comes in, he's confident, and he's won two titles. Yeah.
Greg Rosenthal
Heck yeah, dude.
Dan Patrick
But he got paid. Too bad. A lot of confidence with a couple of rings and a check, huh? Yeah. And then he was talking about, hey, everybody, when everybody wins, everybody gets paid. And the Lakers, it happened. And then it happened with OKC because, you know, you got Chad Holmgren just got paid and Jalen Williams just got paid. I think they're like $800 million. If you throw in SGA Chet and Williams, it's like, I don't know, 700, $800 million with those salaries. Yes. Mark the Hartenstein contract too. Me a $30 million set, hard screens and rebound. All right, let me take a break. The comedian Nate Margetzi just stopped by, so we'll talk to him right after this Dan Patrick show. Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in the nation. Hour 2 here in Lake Tahoe on this Friday tournament getting underway. The great comedian Nate Bargetti will be with Charles Barkley and Larry the Cable Guy. They tee off in about an hour and a half from now. You know, when I go on the road a lot, my kids will say, well, who are you going to have on? So I could say Steph Curry, Aaron Rodgers, Travis, it didn't matter. They're like anybody else. I said, well, Nate Bargensky. And they're like, seriously, like, oh, yes. So I said to Paulie, I said, I hope Nate's going to join us because I got three daughters going to be very disappointed. So we make way for the great comedian Nate Bargetti who joins us on the program. Big introduction, big lead up here. Don't fall down, you know.
Greg Rosenthal
Pleasure, boys.
Dan Patrick
Y.
Greg Rosenthal
Pleasure, Pleasure, Pleasure.
Dan Patrick
Good to meet you, Nate.
Greg Rosenthal
Great to meet you, man. Do I get a. I want to tell you, giant fan of the show.
Dan Patrick
Really?
Greg Rosenthal
I was in New York. I like, what, 511, 182. 182. Yeah. I stopped watching once McLovin left. Wow. It was. No, I'm joking, I'm joking, I'm joking.
Dan Patrick
Marvin.
Greg Rosenthal
No, no, I'm back.
Dan Patrick
Marvin.
Greg Rosenthal
I'm back. I'm back. I was joking. No, but I was, when I, when I started comedy, I was, I was in New York for a long time and I, when you're on the audience network, I recorded it every day and watched it all the time. So I've always wanted to come on your show, so.
Dan Patrick
Oh, that's great.
Greg Rosenthal
It's. I'm glad to finally happen. So thank you.
Dan Patrick
How do you explain it's almost like 25 years to become an overnight sensation?
Greg Rosenthal
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Why, like, why now?
Greg Rosenthal
You know, just being around. Like, I always just tell, I always tell people, like, it's just you got to show up. You just got to be like, hang out. That's all. I feel like when you're doing something like this, that's kind of like something that you're not owed. Like, you know, it's not like a, I worked at the water company. It's not like a job that's A union job or something. It's something that you're trying to go out and get. You just got to be around and like, wait. And then everybody tell you no for they tell you no as long as they can.
Dan Patrick
But it was it. You had to understand your audience better or your audience understanding you better.
Greg Rosenthal
I think they got me. I've always been clean. And so that was the big thing is when I came up, it was like the edgy was not in good reason, whatever. Like, if that was like kind of in the 2000s, that was like kind of going. And I, and the one thing I'm realizing now is because there was times I thought, well, what if I change or if I go down these other paths or whatever. And I just kind of stayed doing what I did and, and then it has now just kind of come back. And then now I'm more comfortable because I just know, like, I've just worked on this act now for, you know, over 20 years, like.
Dan Patrick
But you include your wife and daughter a lot. Yeah, but then when kids get to a certain age, then you have to back off, bringing them into the act.
Greg Rosenthal
Your daughter, I haven't really talked about her since she was like five or six. I married with me. I this new hour. I got some stuff with her, but it's all kind of broad. Like, I don't want her, you know, I, I, she goes to school. It's like, you're just like, I don't want to bring up. So I have a story that I want to tell about her that I'm waiting, I'm waiting because I need to, I, I just wanted to get a little bit older to explain. It's a funny story, but it's like I just want her to understand why I'm telling it.
Dan Patrick
So you're workshopping that?
Greg Rosenthal
Yeah, I haven't even really done it much. It's like the idea of it, it's, I have, it's a, I think it's a story that I'll be able to in the next hour do. My daughter just turned 13, so I think in not this hour, but in like three or four years, like I'll be able to, you know, have a conversation with her, tell her about it and then tell this story. So it's a planned, I hope it.
Dan Patrick
Works out, but it's a big build up here.
Greg Rosenthal
It's a big buildup. He goes, guys, don't worry about it. When it's all said and done, you hear one last joke.
Dan Patrick
It's going to be great.
Greg Rosenthal
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Social Media, podcasts, appearing on podcasts. How does that, how's that changed? The exposure that you get, the acceptance maybe, that you get?
Greg Rosenthal
It's, you're, you're kind of everywhere. I, I the problem. I feel bad for the young comedians because when we came up, like, you know, YouTube was like, not a thing, and then it was a thing, and it kind of started happening. And so now it's like a lot of these comedy clubs, there is something they want to book comedians on, how many followers they have. And like, and to get a lot of flowers on social media, it's like you got to create a lot of stuff. You got to do stuff every day, and it's exalt and it's not sustainable. Like, that's why stand up is great, because you build an act and you go do it for. I tape a special, like, basically every two years. And so you go on the road and you work it for two years and you perfect it and you get it into like a good spot. And so young comedians is, it's, they're in the tricky spot because it's like they have to, you know, some of them got to get the followers. But I just don't think that is going to pay off in the long because you just can't keep it up. You got to do it every, you know, if you got funny videos, I mean, you see people have those videos that they're making every day that are funny. It's all day. That's a full day shoot, and they have to do it every day. Like, it's impossible.
Dan Patrick
You don't want to be an influencer.
Greg Rosenthal
You don't know. It's, it's, it's, it's a, you know, it's hard. You do. Sitcoms are hard. You have a whole writing room that does 22 episodes or something a year.
Dan Patrick
But that's, that doesn't intrigue you, doing a sitcom?
Greg Rosenthal
It. No, it did. I tried for 10. I sold. I tried. You know, I, that was kind of the, When I came up, I thought, you know, that was, I was clean. I kind of was like, all right, I can go to the, you know, Ray Romano route, like, hopefully get a chance to go do it. And I try to sell shows for 10 years and just, you know, never made it anywhere. We shot one pilot then. Now you just kind of get to a point where you're, you know, I just wrapped on a movie, and so you're just like, well, now I'm just kind of got my own little world. And then you're just like, well, I'll. I don't really, you know, I don't really want to do a TV show now. It takes up so much of your time when you go do it and you just kind of got past it.
Dan Patrick
He loves his Vanderbilt sports. Nate works. I like how you say that. You mispronounce your last name. But you know, when it's. A lot of people say bargazi, but it's Bargetzi.
Greg Rosenthal
If it was bargazi, it'd be a lot easier. People would have already got it. We throw them through a loop when we go, no, Bargetzi. And they're like, like an E. And Yeah. And they said it doesn't make sense, but I bet it's bargotzi. But I, you know, I answer by whatever.
Dan Patrick
Do you ever ask your dad?
Greg Rosenthal
Yeah, he says Bargetsi too. We're all. Our accent. My dad has a speech impediment, so that doesn't help. And so it's like he's everywhere. We're already. We've muddied the waters quite a bit.
Dan Patrick
You know how addicting is laughter?
Greg Rosenthal
It's the most.
Dan Patrick
But if I said you could have cheers on the golf course.
Greg Rosenthal
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Or laughs when you're doing your stuff.
Greg Rosenthal
Laughs all day. Yeah, that's. It's the. What I tend to do. Like when you do a show, especially now, like we're in these. You're being a big arena. Right. There's so many people. It's hard to do a show in your mind mentally for all these people. So I always, like, try to pick. I just find someone and I almost like this person doesn't realize it, but there could be 10,000 people there and I'm doing the show for that person. And like, because I. If they're, if they're good laughers, I'll see their shoulders shake. It's like I just always kind of keep an eye on them. And then like, I mean, I was.
Dan Patrick
Like, so you're getting a ringer. You're looking for that ringer?
Greg Rosenthal
Yeah, I'm not looking for. Yeah, I mean, look, you can always find the one that's miserable too.
Dan Patrick
Okay. But I want you to listen to this. How would this laugh work in your stand up act?
Greg Rosenthal
Oh, scenes. Yes, you would hear it. It would, it would be, it would be like you would try not to have to address it, but then you might have to. Are you okay over there? Yeah. Like, and you don't want to drink because then it's awkward because then you're Laughing. You're uncomfortable with laughing?
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Greg Rosenthal
I had a girl once when I did a show her laugh. When I first started, she would go, ah. Like a straight. Just scream. And you have to address it because everybody hears it. And then her dad was like, well, that's how she laughs. And we're like, well, she shouldn't be, sir.
Dan Patrick
She.
Greg Rosenthal
You should have fixed that at like five. When she was five. Just go like, hey, break it up a little bit.
Dan Patrick
You know, I had a friend who dated a girl. I think you met your wife at Applebee's.
Greg Rosenthal
I did.
Dan Patrick
Okay. He was dating the hostess. He was in minor league baseball dating the hostess at Applebee's and said she was beautiful except for she had bad teeth. So he would take her out and purposely talk about, like, Schindler's List, like, serious things, hospitals, so she wouldn't smile. But he. He.
Greg Rosenthal
I love the idea of him having to get a conversation about a hospital going is, have you seen the new hospital? The wing at the hospital they got.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, yeah, yeah. But you don't want her to laugh. You did bring up something, I think. I. I don't know if I have the quote right. You either make it in your 20s or your 40s, but you don't make it in your 30s.
Greg Rosenthal
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
That sound correct?
Greg Rosenthal
Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's what I feel.
Dan Patrick
Why is that?
Greg Rosenthal
I think either get snatched up quick and you kind of get on a good train, or you. Or you kind of have to grind it out. And so I obviously, I mean, I made it in my 40s. I mean, it's. I'm much happier that made my 40s than I would have been my 2000s. You just don't have enough experience.
Dan Patrick
Could you have handled this in your 20s?
Greg Rosenthal
You know, you like to think so. Look, I tried to make it in my 20s. I'm not. If anybody's out there, definitely try to make it in your 20s. But if you don't, it's like, then I think it's the matter of, like, who's going to stay. Who has the stamina? Stay. I'm sure, you know, in this same thing, it's like a matter of who can hang. Who can hang.
Dan Patrick
The long shelf life.
Greg Rosenthal
Yeah, yeah.
Dan Patrick
It's.
Greg Rosenthal
People cannot hang. They get. It gets like, well, where's this going? What? You know, I'm not really want to do it. And then they bail on it, and you're like, well, then it's over.
Dan Patrick
You have this Saturday Night Live skit where you kill the bird.
Greg Rosenthal
Yes.
Dan Patrick
And then you hit the next shot. You're mulligan. You knock down the nest.
Greg Rosenthal
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Who came up with that idea? That's not. That's not how you play golf, is it?
Greg Rosenthal
No, no, no, no. It was. I mean, out my. You know, it could be.
Dan Patrick
What's your handicap?
Greg Rosenthal
Nine.
Dan Patrick
Okay. Okay.
Greg Rosenthal
And so it's enough. It gets around. I can still hit a bird, you know. Yeah. But it's. There it. Streeter Sidell. Mikey Day wrote it, who wrote the George Washington sketch. And they came up that. And it was. It ended up being great because it's like, you know, when someone does a golf sketch, you're like, in my head, I'm like, man, I don't know if anybody's gonna, like, you know, does everybody get golf? Like, is everybody, you know, the average person? But when we shot it and they saw it, I was like, it's one of my favorite ones that they've done.
Dan Patrick
Just the reaction when you go up to hit your mulligan and you're looking around to see if there's any birds flying around, but then you get the. The George Washington skit. Now, do you wonder at the time when you see it, read it, you go, what is that going to be big? Like, did you think. I mean, it's.
Greg Rosenthal
I did not think that.
Dan Patrick
It's one of the best skits ever on Saturday Night Live.
Greg Rosenthal
Yeah, I did not think it would be that. I just thought I would have fun with it. And I was like, oh, that's. That's a fun thing. It was a lot. I was saying a lot. But I mean, when we read it in table. Table read, it's like, almost didn't go. Because it was like the. Because it's just. There's just no one, really. You don't have an audience. And I'm used to, like, timing. My timing is based off an audience.
Dan Patrick
Yes.
Greg Rosenthal
It's not off silence. So, I mean, I just sounded sad when I read it, you know, I.
Dan Patrick
Thought your deadpan delivery, though.
Greg Rosenthal
Well. But it's. Again, we have that studio audience, so it works. Yeah, but when you're in the table read. Table read, and it's just like, you know, a couple quick laughs, but nothing big. It's. It's just gets. You know, it can be boring. It's just my voice. Like, if you just heard my voice in a silent room, you'd be like, all right. Like, you know, he'd get over it.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. Did you have sports heroes or comedian heroes growing up?
Greg Rosenthal
We had both as a big, big seinfeld fan. So I love Seinfeld. Brian Regan was the one that came up. And then sports. Yeah. I mean, I was a big Jordan, like, you know, the Tiger woods, that era. Love sports. Watched everything. Vanderbilt. Corey Chavis was one of my favorite.
Dan Patrick
Oh, what a good dude.
Greg Rosenthal
Yeah, he was one of my favorite. He was my favorite Vanderbilt player when I first started, like, old enough watching Vanderbilt and all that, so.
Dan Patrick
But are you more of a basketball fan with.
Greg Rosenthal
I'm. I'm really across the board. You talking about a Vanderbilt or, like, it's really across the board. I watch. I watch everything. Basketball. The thing I love about basketball, especially the NBA right now, is, like, I don't really have a team, so you just get a watch and you kind of follow players. As you get older, you kind of start following players and just then storylines. The Stanley cup this year, I watched every. Every round, like, and I. You know, hockey's. I don't know everything about it, but it's. Yeah. I mean, in general, I just. I'm a big. I mean, that's why I listen to you every. How day.
Dan Patrick
How was Seinfeld, though, when you meet him?
Greg Rosenthal
It was great. And I. I thought. I, Like, I was nervous about meeting him. I didn't know if it's gonna be one of those where you meet him and if he doesn't know you, you're just gonna be like, oh, hey. You shake his hand and you move on. But we. When I.
Dan Patrick
He.
Greg Rosenthal
He sent me a very nice message. He watched one of my specials and. And now we've got to know each other. I mean, I won't. He. He tells you. He's like, call me whenever you want. And you're like, you still. Yeah. It's like, you can't. You're like, I don't. You know, I mean, I'd call you every day. So he goes. And Sandler, saying, oh, yes, Sandler, again, seeing y'. All, that his model is kind of a model that I love is like, you know, he does these movies with his friends, and he. And. And so Sam is someone very much that. I've kind of seen his career and always really admired what he's done, and I've always loved what he did with you guys. Yeah, I always. Even when y' all were in the movies, when we see you in the movies, it was so fun. Like, and I love the realness of that. Like, it was. It's. You know, it's his buddies, which I think is a good reason. That's what. That's why people Go watch those shows because you're like, everybody wants to be. Yeah. That's what I would be doing if I made it.
Dan Patrick
He's very loyal. Yes, he's very loyal. And one of his friends said, once you're in, you're in. It's like the Mafia. Yeah, he will. So I've been in 22 movies.
Greg Rosenthal
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
And then Happy Gilmore is Two is coming out. So it's. He's very generous. And then he'll go, danny, I got a part for the Danettes. And then I'll go, all right. You know, and then he'll write something and.
Greg Rosenthal
Yeah. What was Yalls first one? That's my boy. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Dan Patrick
TV's Randall Morgan.
Greg Rosenthal
Yeah. Because I remember it happening on the show when it was. I don't think y' all were on one yet. Right. And then he kind of was gonna get everybody or someone hasn't. Yeah, yeah.
Dan Patrick
There's been. I think you guys have been in 3 pixels, and then there's the Week of. With Chris Rock. Yeah. So, yeah, I think these guys now, you know, they get in three movies. They're like, when are we getting our next one?
Greg Rosenthal
Oh, yeah. It goes quick where they just.
Dan Patrick
And I go, no, no. I don't know if there's any more. I thought I could put them in, like, the gallery for Happy Gilmore, too.
Greg Rosenthal
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
But there's only. I mean, in a subtle way to ask Sandler, hey, if you need some extras, the Danettes. And then he didn't respond. So that usually is the answer. That.
Greg Rosenthal
Yeah, yeah.
Dan Patrick
Yes.
Greg Rosenthal
See, the problem with that now, from our point of view, is what did.
Dan Patrick
We do to ruin it?
Greg Rosenthal
Yeah. And no one will give us an answer. So it's like, did I screw that up by, like, laughing one time, or did this guy do something wrong? Somebody one of us did something wrong to ruin? It's acting. Acting. They don't give you. You go do an audition, you just don't hear, and you don't hear anything. And then it's like, five years later, you're still, like. It might come back around. I'm just waiting for them to, you know.
Dan Patrick
Are you. So you got Barkley and Cable Gary the cable gun.
Greg Rosenthal
Yeah. Okay, so I've got to know. I mean, I've known them now and then, so it's a very, very fun group. Barclay. Very, like, just great dudes, and it'll be a fun walk. And it's. I got. My buddy Greg Garcia is on my bag this week, and he created My Name is Earl and so yeah, yeah. Humble him by carrying my bag all, all week. Easy. Yeah. So it, it's a fun. I got a bunch of comic buddies with me too and this is like one of the better events because it's just, it's go walk around. It's like a fun time.
Dan Patrick
It's great to see you.
Greg Rosenthal
Great. I honestly really always wanted to do you guys show. I'm a giant Giant fan. So thank you very much. Yeah.

Oh my God. The play of the day Runner left side. This is the play of the day. Check this out. Bummer throwing and a breaking ball line to right center base hit. There's Rucker to second, up with the ball.
Greg Rosenthal
Is Harris around third. The play to the plate is not nearly in time.
Dan Patrick
And Soderson walks it off for the.
Greg Rosenthal
A's scoring rucker from second base. And the Athletics in the 11th inning.
Dan Patrick
Come back and they win the series. And the Braves have lost 11 of their last 14. They haven't won a series since mid June. That's your play of the day. For over 40 years, Tire act has been helping customers find the right tires for how and what and where they drive ship fast and free, backed by free road hazard protection, convenient installation options like mobile tire installation, Tire Rack.com is the way tire buying should be. That was Pretty cool that Nate Bargetzi had the height and weight Bell. He's been watching since the audience network. It's a long time ago, dude. That's legit. And he took a shot at Marvin by saying he stopped. Stopped listening when McLovin left. That was hurtful. That was pretty good. I was a fan. I enjoyed it. So most of the golfers here are. Well, there's a lot of them out on the driving range, which is behind us. And we had Nate saying he's going to play with Charles Barkley, Larry the cable guy, Devonte Adams. I see him. So who else? Rob Mack, who is always sunny in Philadelphia. He'll join us coming up, top of the hour. Oh, you know what? You see the right behind you is the chairman, the boss. Yeah. Jonathan Thomas. Just see if he'll stop up. And. And he. So Jonathan Thomas is the chairman, CEO, president of American Century Investments. And I. Just go ahead and sit down if you can. Jonathan, I know that when we went to the players, you had the pairings party and you told a story about the trophy that you hand out at the end and that everybody thinks there's a trophy for everybody who wins. So, Steph, I'll let you tell the story.
Jonathan Thomas
Yeah, well, it's an embarrassing story. I don't really think we're gonna be telling it on this.
Dan Patrick
That was an intimate environment. Is that off the record, Jonathan?
Jonathan Thomas
All right, I no longer. This is the first public hearing of the story. So in 2023, I'd been giving out our trophy for 18 years. Give it to the guys on 18 on Sunday. They're thrilled. They take pictures with it. And then I usually roll off and head home, and I come back next year. And in 2023, everyone says Steph left. Steph Curry won a dramatic finish. He left with the trophy, and I said, it's cool. He won. They said, no, no, we only have one trophy. And I had been giving out the same trophy for 18 years, had no idea that I was doing that. And they were all panicked that he left with it. So actually, stuff left with the trophy, that's from 1990. And after that, I felt so bad that I had thought I'd given these guys these trophies, including, like, Romo and Marty. When I see them on TV from their homes and they have their trophies on the back wall, I never saw mine. And I'm texting like, where's my trophy? So I felt so bad, I went backwards over the previous five years and flew around the country, had trophies made for the previous Five years. Mulder, Vinnie, Tony, Marty, and gave them all the trophies they actually earned.
Dan Patrick
I, I didn't know if it was off the record. It's not off the record anymore. You do an incredible job here. But when you look back 26 years ago and just the numbers of trying to get people to come here and then even fans to show up, like, what changed, do you think?
Jonathan Thomas
So it was kind of a potato chip and hot dog event for a long time. And we really decided that golf was growing, the influence of celebrity was growing. And we thought, let's bring this together. And we poured a lot of money into this and just we've turned this into some way or another, the super bowl of celebrity golf. And you know, all these guys, we have, you know, hundreds of people that we'd love to be here, who would also like to be here, who we just don't have room for. And it built upon itself largely through word of mouth. And you know, back then we had a few thousand people walking around. We had 50 or 60 players. This year we'll probably have over 80,000 people here, which I think is more than most PGA tournaments. We'll have five and a half to six million viewers and billions of posts generated. It's, it's been an incredible journey.
Dan Patrick
How much money have you raised?
Jonathan Thomas
So there's two sides to that down one for local charities. We raised about $8 million local and national charities over the years that give away. We give away. But in addition to that, American Century Investments. When you do business with American Century by mutual funds, ETFs, IRAs, whatever, we direct over 40% of our profits each and every year to medical research to find cures for cancer and other gene based diseases. And since the year 2000, we've directed over $2.2 billion to fund. So there's what we do from the golf tournament and then there's what American Century does as a business model.
Dan Patrick
Jonathan Thomas, Chairman, CEO and president of American Century Investments. Thank you for allowing us to come out. We'll be back next year. It's been wonderful.
Jonathan Thomas
Thank you for having me on my show. And I've been doing this now for 20 years and I don't know how you pulled this off, but this is by far the biggest and best studio I've ever seen on property.
Dan Patrick
Can I have this print next year?
Jonathan Thomas
Well, now that people have seen it, it's kind of like the trophy story. The story's out. Everyone's going to want something like this, but I don't know if we have room for more than one of these?
Dan Patrick
No. I don't think. No. Let's make it. Declare it. No. Thank you again. He's Jonathan Thomas, Chairman, CEO, president of American Century Investments. Final hour on the way. Rob Mack, always sunny in Philadelphia and the co owner of the Wrexham Final hour on this Friday. A meat Friday at that. Right around the corner. Seaton, Paulie, Marv Fritz. He's going to join us as well.
