Dan Patrick
This is an iHeart podcast. You are listening to the Dan Patrick show on Fox Sports Radio, hour two on this Tuesday, hockey tomorrow, basketball on Thursday. We'll check in with the New York Knicks coming up in about 20 minutes from now. Also, the Ravens running back Derek Henry, friend of the show, will stop by in the final hour of the program. Just got that contract extension, two year contract extension. NFL OTAs are underway. Stefan Diggs is with the Patriots, but hasn't spoken to the media, at least not yet. Big news out of Detroit. The Lions All Pro center Frank Ragnow announced his retirement at the age of 29. You lose both coordinators, they became head coaches. Now you lose your starting center. That's a big deal. Big deal. And you start to look at this and maybe it's just a coincidence because Frank retires at the age of 29. Calvin Johnson retired at the age of 30, and Barry Sanders retired at the age of 31, all with the Lions. Now, Calvin and Barry are hall of Famers and Frank might have been on his way to being a Hall of Famer. It's hard to find a center, but didn't they draft a center pretty high up in this past draft? Can we find that out? Maybe second round. And Frank had been injured before, the year before. I think that finding a great center, you know, we usually talk about that left tackle, that center is equally as important. But him retiring at the age of 29 and to announce it at the beginning of June, I think that's what surprised people. If they had the idea that he was going to retire or maybe, you know, something contractually retiring at the beginning of June, I don't know that. But he was second team all pro center, played almost 100 regular season games. His last game he played was at age 28. So retires at the age of 29. Yes, Paulie, the Lions did draft two offensive linemen. Not specifically a center, but guys who played multiple positions. Okay. Yeah. So they had an idea that this was coming their way. All right, so we'll check in with the Knicks. Derek Henry will stop by as well. Stanley cup final Wednesday. The NBA Finals will be coming up on Thursday. Charles Barkley was with us yesterday in the second hour of the program and he brought up something interesting because I was under the impression that ESPN is basically outsourcing inside the NBA just getting those guys. You continue to do the show in Atlanta and then we're going to bring you in under the ESPN umbrella. You know, Pat McAfee does his show in Indianapolis and not really affiliated with espn. I mean, he part of college game day, but he's really under his own umbrella and bringing in inside the NBA. And I thought that was going to be their NBA show. And then Charles goes, no, maybe. Maybe half the time we'll be on espn. But he said that we shot a pilot. So they had Shaq and Ernie and Kenny and Charles try to do a show, no highlights, because they're not a rights holder anymore. And I'm thinking, what is tnt? Now, I know that they're trying to get something out of these guys under contract, but what are you going to show? How are you going to show it and why am I tuning in for that? As much as I like those guys. But what are you doing if you can't show highlight, you can't be inside the NBA if you can't really get inside the NBA. And I like those guys talking. But then there's a lot more to that show. And I guessing ESPN is okay with this. You're going to purchase this show, but you're only getting the show 50% of the time. At the most. Maybe one night a week, you're getting this. I don't know. It just feels like that there's. I got a lot of questions. Charles didn't have any answers. And he's part of the show. That was the amazing part. He goes, we did this stupid pilot. It was terrible, terrible. And I go, oh, my goodness. But you know, they got a long time here, got a big window here to workshop this so they can try to figure out what they're going to do on tnt. Stat of the day brought to you by Panini America. The official trading cards of the Dan Patrick show poll question for hour two is going to be what? Seaton. Well, let me update you real quick on hour one and then we do have a new one for hour two. That'll be fun. Let's see, we've got NFL team that will drop off this season and miss the playoffs right now. Vikings running away with that one. That was Marvin's suggestion. Followed by Paul and Dan's commanders, Rams and Chiefs. Not getting too much vote there. And then off to a more iffy start. Bill belichick still has 70% of that vote over Stefan Diggs and the Patriots. Belichick stays the entire season. I don't think the Stefan Diggs thing is going to. I mean, it's, it's now, it's, it's present. But I think once the season starts, then it'll be over. Belichick, I mean, he's on the clock. You know, this doesn't go away. Now. If he wins, then people don't care about his relationship, you know, with his girlfriend. Yes. Yeah. The thing that's unfortunate for Stefan Diggs is because he's by all accounts a great guy. He's always been awesome every time he comes on the show or whatever. But it makes jumping from a couple of teams go from. Well, maybe he just couldn't find the right fit to. Oh, wait, maybe there's an issue there. Well, we saw this with Terrell Owens hall of Fame talent, but he kind of wears out his welcome. Right. Not the right place at the right time. Didn't get along with the quarterback, whatever it might be. There was always a myriad of reasons, excuses. But with Stefan Diggs, you've been on a couple of teams. You know, we were surprised what happened in Buffalo. And then you go to the Texans and you get hurt. Now you're in New England and signed a pretty good contract there, which was surprising. Yeah. Pulling.
Marvin
But there's a guy who was midway.
Dan Patrick
Through his career, he was very well liked in Minnesota, works his way to Buffalo, which worked out great. His four years in Buffalo, he averaged 115 catches and 1300 yards a year.
Marvin
That's the kind of stuff that gets.
Dan Patrick
You on the door of the hall of Fame. And now his career is flux. Yeah, he's not a Hall of Famer, but yeah, you, you find these receivers have about a five year stretch where they were great. It's just hard to sustain that at that position where you go, oh my gosh, that guy lights out for five years. And then after that you end up in another team, start to trail off a little bit here. And that's what happened to Stefan Diggs and he got injured as well. All right, we'll get to some phone calls here. Coming up, 8, 7 7, 3 DP show mad in South Bend. Hi, Matt. What's on your mind today? Morning, Dan. Thanks for. Dan, that's. Thanks for taking my call. I have two things for you. As, as I've said before to you, I'm the guy that got you in the unfortunate Notre Dame fire with the talk last week coming, potentially coming back to town, I wanted to offer first, seeing I owe you a pie to the face if you want to give that to me in person. I live here right across the street from Notre Dame and I would give you that honor. Oh, yeah, absolutely. We'll take you up. We're, we're, we're going to try to go to the USC game. And the last time we were there, it was a USC game. We're looking for a beer where everybody's tailgating, and I'm in. You know, my guys go, well, just be Dan Patrick. Get us some beers. So I walk around. All of a sudden, I got Matt and his crew who say, hey, you want to do a fireball? And then I said, I'll do one. And then they, like, 15 cameras came out. I go, no, I'm not. No, no, no, no, we're not doing this. So next time, though, just give me a beer, Matt, not a fireball. Okay, so that. That was the second part that I wanted to offer you, is being here now 10 years. I have already arranged if you guys want a private tailgate where all the beer will be staged, the local Miller Light distributors already agreed to it, and I'll have a local grill master. Okay. That's how you call in and become a friend of the show. Absolutely. Matt will. We'll keep you posted, but we're going to try to come in for the USC game and maybe do the show on campus for a couple of days. That's. That's my goal. And. And for the people in Iowa, I still want to bring the show there. We just have to find the right time and see if there's anything else going on. We. We do want to bring the show to Iowa. I promise, before I call this a career, we will be in Iowa, but we're trying to go to South Bend because who knows how many more games USC and Notre Dame will have? But, Matt, thank you for the invitation, and we look forward to taking you up on that. Nathan in San Antonio. Hi, Nate. What's on your mind today, man? That's a tough act to follow. Beer distributors on deck. But anyways, I missed the show yesterday because I had jury duty. Good news is I was in and out in three and a half hours, so salute to that. My question for you is, you had Charles on yesterday. Is Charles Barkley the most unfairable person in sports media history? That's the question. Oh, in history. If. If he hasn't been fired yet, that he's not going to be fired. Yeah. Stephen A. I'm guessing with that contract, probably not fireable. McAfee might be, I guess. But, you know, after a while, I mean, you get. You get to that lofty perch, and your contributions to ESPN makes it really, really difficult, you know, because Paddle pushed the envelope. Stephen A. Pushes the envelope, Barkley pushes the envelope. That's. That's why you hire them. You can't, you can't be upset at them if they push the envelope. You can't go, I'll be damned. Did you hear what Barkley said or McAfee said or Stephen A. Said, this is why you hire them. Yes.
Marvin
Marvin Nathan said all time. What about Howard Cosell?
Dan Patrick
I think at the end of his career, he probably, I mean, Brent Musburger got fired by cbs. Did he really? Yes. Yeah. Yeah. I was at the final four in Denver and I remember, I'm out there and at the final four and I'm going, did you hear the news? And I go, no. Brett Musburger let go by cbs. I go, no, wait, no, he wasn't. And then I realized that he was. We're all expendable. But the word fire, you know, that takes on a lot of different meanings because you can be not renewed, let go budgetary. You know, you're never quite sure. But yeah, if Charles hasn't been fired, then he's not going to be fired. Elliot in Iowa. Hi, Elliot. Hey, Dan 59165. I, I was wondering. Well, first of all, I'm in sports media myself, 29 and still, still kind of young in the gig. So first of all, I wanted to say that you're my goat. I told my girlfriend multiple times actually this week that you're the greatest of all time in voice radio. So you're, you're my favorite. Secondly, I wanted to say, or I wanted to ask if you could go back at the start of your career and ask yourself, or, sorry, give yourself a piece of advice. What would that be? Don't put a time frame on success because I wanted everything to be kind of incrementally, like at 30, you're going to be here. At 35, you're going to be here. At 40, you'll be here. Don't have any time frame on it because you, it's already tough enough to do it and you've added pressure because you need to be. I wanted to be at ESPN by the time I was 30. Well, I just lost out on a weekend job in Dayton, Ohio at 27. So my path to ESPN, well, it's going to take a little bit longer. But I never stopped thinking about that. And even when I took the job at cnn and I kept thinking, eventually I'll end up at espn, it was the only place that, I mean, I didn't have a plan B. This is the only thing I knew I could do. And somehow, some way I was going to make it there. But I will Say that, you know, it was five years after I sent a letter in a resume tape to Bob Lee, who was the 11 o' clock sports center anchor. And I said, would you look at this and critique it for me? And I'm forever indebted to Bob Lee. First of all, he was somebody I truly looked up to with his work ethic and he wanted to be a journalist. He wanted to do it correctly. He wasn't a hot take guy. He wanted to be, he wanted to have us be up with news organizations, that we were every bit the news organization as the networks. But Bob watched my video. I did five minutes where I ad libbed five minutes of sports. No teleprompter, just five minutes. And I filmed it myself, rented out equipment, sent it to ESPN with a letter saying, you know, would you look at this? Bob sent me a full page letter back critiquing my five minutes. And he said, you're not ready for this, but one day you will be. A little over five years later, I'm sitting next to Bob Lee on the Sports center set. You know, I believe in fate. There's a lot of luck involved in it, but I knew if your name gets called, be ready. And I was ready, so. But Bob, Bob took the time. I'm just a nobody who just missed out on a job at the, you know, in Dayton, Ohio and was going to give up on TV at age 27. And I thought, God, I can do this. And I remember renting out all this equipment and doing five minutes and then like I had to get up and stop the camera. But I sent it and I was shocked when he sent me a letter back and then gave me the encouragement that you can do this. And then I got the job at cnn. And then five years later, I call up ESPN and I have no idea who I'm talking to. And I, I know John Walsh just took, took over SportsCenter and I, I call him Cold calling. I said, hey, do you know who I'm. Dan Patrick, do you know who I am? And he said, yes. I said, you should hire me. He goes, yes, that was a Friday. And I said, he goes, when can you come up? I go, now? And he goes, no, like next week. I got to get everybody together. I said, Tuesday. He goes, all right. I went up Tuesday. I didn't even negotiate a contract. I just said, you pay me whatever you think I'm worth because I'm home. This is where I want to be. And I should have had an agent negotiating because they, they didn't exactly go, you know what? We're going to overpay this guy. Well, three months later, I'm sitting next to Bob lee on the SportsCenter set. And actually my first show was with Chris Berman. You know, it's a wild ride and you know, truly indebted with, you know, Chris, Tom Meese, the late Tom Mees, John Walsh and Bob Lee. They, they took a chance and forever grateful for that. All right, let me take a break. Let's check in with the New York Knicks. I know that Carl Anthony Towns get a lot of blame here, but is that reason enough to move on from him? Also, Derek Henry will join us. Just signed that contract extension with the Ravens. We'll talk to him. We'll also check in with the New England Patriots. They got a couple things that need to be addressed at some point here with Stefan Diggs. We're back after this on the Dan Patrick Show. Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in the nation. We'll talk to the Ravens running back Derek Henry. He'll join us coming up next hour. Also, check in with the New England Patriots. There's a few questions that need to be answered if you're going to get Stefan Diggs to answer those questions. Stefan Bundy, Stephan Bundy, the Knicks beat reporter for the New York Post, back on the program. Great to see you again. Give me the one word you would use to describe the Knicks season.
Marvin
Success. I mean, listen, I know that there are some fans who are very upset with how it ended in the conference finals, but this was the first conference finals for this franchise in 25 years. It was a new core. They won 51 games, which was the most that they've ever done since 2013. They beat the defending champs in the second round. Nobody gave them a shot against the Celtics. They beat them in six games and they ran up against a Pacers team that I thought a lot of people underestimated, including myself. This was one of the best teams in the NBA after January 1st, and they were hot and they took it to him. So listen, overall, you know, you like what you saw from Jalen Brunson. Certainly there were some chemistry issues that need to get ironed out. I thought Mikel Bridges struggled throughout the season, but overall, I mean, listen, given the history of this franchise, I think it was a success.
Dan Patrick
Okay, but you're being very rational here. Fair, Nick. Fans aren't rational here and they want changes made. And if it's Tom Thibodeau or it's Carl Anthony Towns, give us a crystal ball what you think will happen and should happen this off season.
Marvin
So I think they are going to try to be aggressive in trying to upgrade this roster. I don't see the player out there that's going to make a lot of sense. I don't think they have the assets to go get Giannis Antetokounmpo. I don't think Kevin Durant, when you look at the salary that he's making and what you have to do to match those salaries makes a lot of sense when you're trading for a 36 year old injury prone guy. I get it, he's great, he's a great offensive player. He'd be great in the playoffs. But first you need to get to the playoffs and in order to do that, you're going to have to trade two players who eat up a lot of minutes for the Knicks. For the Knicks. And I just don't see how you can do that in a TIB system when you don't have much depth. And now all of a sudden you've, you've traded two players on your roster for an injury prone guy that's not, you know, not going to make it through 82 games. That trade doesn't make a lot of sense to me right now. Listen, things develop in the NBA landscape that shock you. I don't know who's going to become available. I don't know who's going to shake loose. But the way I see it right now, I think the best move for the Knicks is to just add depth. I think that was a big issue in this series, especially in the. In the Pacer series. They just were overwhelmed by the amount of Pacers depth and players on the bench. They couldn't match that. And I think they have enough assets right now to go out in free agency, look at the trade market and find people to boost up that bench. I think that would be the move right now.
Dan Patrick
How surprised were you that people were surprised that Carl Anthony Towns can't play defense?
Marvin
It's shocking to me. I don't understand why the fans were so shocked by this. Because this is who he is. He's 10 years now in the league. He was drafted in 2015. It. This is who they. They got Mikhail Bridges, they got OG Anunoby to mass the defensive deficiencies of Jalen Brunson and Karl Anthony Towns. And we saw it play out exactly how I predicted it would unfold. He's a great offensive player. He does things that 7 footers shouldn't be able to do to put the ball in the basket. But he's slow, he struggles with pick and roll coverage and he's not a good defender. He fouls too much and he probably complains too much about. About fouls. So that's Carl Anthony Towns in a nutshell. That's who he's been. I don't understand why Knicks fans expected it to be something else. But it seemed like after that Pacer series and after the playoff run, everybody was taken aback by how poorly he played defensively. That's who he is. The Minnesota Timberwolves, to compensate for Karl Anthony Town's defense, defensive deficiencies went out and got Rudy Gobert. Yeah, that's something that the Knicks might need to explore. Is moving Cat to the four. You saw it in the playoffs. Mitchell Robinson started at center. That's something that I think the Knicks have to decide whether they view Cat as a four or a five handicap.
Dan Patrick
The east moving forward, you know, we don't know Tatum's time frame of coming back. Do the Cavaliers keep their core four together? Philadelphia is a mess. Atlanta, I mean if you're gonna. Milwaukee, I mean they're not that many teams that are really good in the East. But if you're going to handicap that. What do you think happens in the off season with any. Do you think Giannis has moved? Let's start there.
Marvin
I do think Giannis ends up being moved, but I, you know, I think it's like a 60, 40 proposition. Because if the Milwaukee Bucks don't see a deal that makes a lot of sense for them, I would not pull the trigger if I'm them. You know, we saw the backlash that, that Nico Harrison got by trading Luka Doncic, the a player that the fan base absolutely adored. To me, Giannis Antetokounmpo is the greatest player in Milwaukee Bucks history. He's their number one asset, really their only asset. If you look their roster, if you give him up for something for pennies on the dollar, that that franchise is going to be in a really rough spot. So I get it. You feel like you owe Yannis enter to Kumpo something because he dragged your franchise to the championship. I get it. But listen, if he, if he comes out with a list and says, I want to go here, here and here, but the Bucks say, well, those teams aren't going to give us what we want, then I'm, if I'm Milwaukee, I wait until the trade deadline at least. So maybe that doesn't happen in the summer.
Dan Patrick
Maybe.
Marvin
But I do think it happens at some point because you have a team in Milwaukee. They're not going to have Dame Lillard. They're going to struggle next season. So let's assume Giannis, let's say he goes out west, let's say he goes to Houston. Now you're looking at an Eastern Conference. I mean, it would be anyway, but you're looking at Eastern conferences wide open. You mentioned Jason Tatum. He's probably not going to be available for most, if not all of next season. The Pacers are probably the cream of the crop still. And I think I would put the Knicks at number two. I mean, the Sixers you mentioned, they could have make a big leap, but you never know with Joel Embiid. So, yeah, I go one Indiana to the Knicks, and then it's, it's really just wide open.
Dan Patrick
The Thunder are the biggest favorite I think we've seen in the NBA Finals, aside from golden state, maybe in 2016 or 2017, but it doesn't, it feels like nobody knows who they are, that, that this will be almost a, hey, let's introduce you to the OKC Thunder here coming up in the NBA Finals and sort of that way with the Pacers as well. But I don't know. Is this the blueprint? Can. Can you see other teams trying to emulate what we've seen with the Pacers and. Or okc?
Marvin
Yeah, I mean, I think it's a little bit difficult. Teams are different. I mean, what OKC did was they just completely, you know, gutted the roster and rebuilt and did it through draft picks. You know, I don't.
Dan Patrick
I.
Marvin
You know, it is a blueprint. I think, though, that you can look at the other side, but remember, the 76ers did the same exact thing when they went through the process, and it did not work out. So, listen, it's a treacherous path. Obviously, OKC has the number one guy in the business of GM in Sam Presti. I mean, the guy's a genius, so it really worked out for him and getting the right pieces. SGA is obviously a very phenomenal player as far as. As far as the Pacers. I think that Tyrese Halliburton, and it's become. I think New York made him almost. I mean, what he did with it at the Garden, I think, you know, put him on the national landscape in a lot of ways. He obviously was there before he played in the Olympic team. But listen, this guy has become something. Something different because of what he did at Madison Square Garden. And I think that fans, you know, got to. Got to know him a little bit better and got to know his game a little bit better. So even though people are looking at this series saying, you know, it's two small market teams, not a lot of interest, I'm sure the ratings aren't going to be as good. It is going to be an exciting, thrilling series. I think the playing styles are fantastic. I do think okc, though, is the better team.
Dan Patrick
Great to talk to you. I know covering the Knicks, there's always a pulse there. It was kind of a scary pulse, though. What was it like leaving after that loss? Well, they lost in Indiana. Yeah, but what was it like in New York, though?
Marvin
It was. It was insanity. They. They lived and died with every win, with every loss. They rioted either. I mean, rioted is a strong word. They partied outside no matter what, no matter the result. But I did talk to Clyde Frazier during the. During the. The Pacer series. This is a guy who's seen it all, and he said, this is the wildest I've ever seen New York for this team. So that's saying something, right? I mean, they've been starving in New York for a successful Knicks team, because if you look at the landscape you got in New York, you got people who are Yankees fans, you got people who are Mets fans. They're divided. You got jets and Giants fans. But in New York, it's the Knicks. I know. You don't tell me about the Nets. It's the Knicks, so they unite in that way. And we saw that throughout this playoff run.
Dan Patrick
If the Nets would win a championship, would there be a victory parade in New York?
Marvin
You know, that's funny you mentioned that. I believe I covered the Nets for a little while, and this had. This idea was brought up whether they do it at the Canyon, the heroes, or whether they do it in Brooklyn. And I believe the mayor, Mayor Adams was campaigning on the idea that he would have the parade in Brooklyn, so.
Dan Patrick
He wouldn't even do it in Manhattan. We don't have to worry about them winning a title.
Marvin
No, no, we don't. They're a long ways away from that. They blew their shot with KD and Kyrie.
Dan Patrick
Stefan, thank you. We appreciate your time.
Marvin
All right, thanks.
Dan Patrick
All right, Stephan Bondi, he covers the Knicks for the New York Post. Ah. Nobody cares about the Nets. Nobody. I mean, they did briefly, because it was like, I'll be damned. Kyrie KD going there and harden and. Okay, that still surprises me. I thought that Kyrie KD would end up with the Knicks and that they would bring, you know, this. This fandom that we saw, that you would have that attached to those guys because they would give you true hope of winning a championship. And this is a good team that the Knicks. The Knicks do need depth, but then I gotta have a coach who's gonna trust the depth, that I'm not playing these guys too many minutes. And the fact that fans were surprised that Jalen Brunson doesn't play defense or Carl Anthony Towns, that was what was surprising, that they were this. They were surprised. Like, he had one block shot. Carl Anthony Towns had one block shot in that entire series against Indiana. But Indiana is going to be there again next year. Boston with Tatum. If I'm Boston, I make a run at Giannis. I'd make Jaylen Brown available, but I don't think Porzingis is back or Drew Holiday, Al Horford. So there might be some changes there. Yes, Marv.
Marvin
So if you're trading Jalen Brown for Giannis, do you add somebody else to Jalen Brown?
Dan Patrick
I think you have to. Oh, you have to, right? Derrick White or somebody like that? Because if you're the boss, you're not saying, we're not trading Giannis just for Jalen Brown. No, you got to give me. Give me Drew Holiday back. Give me. No, I don't want. I don't want Drew Holiday.
Marvin
Give me fan favorite Peyton Pritchard.
Dan Patrick
You can't get rid of a white guy in Boston. What are you doing? Territorial. Yeah. It's gotta stay there. Yeah. Seaton. Maybe I'm on an island here, but I feel like it's crazy for the Celtics to let Jalen Brown go. If you can get Giannis. Oh, no, there. There aren't many guys like Giannis. That's not the dude that I would let go. Yeah, okay. I would. I mean, I like Jalen Brown. Jalen Brown may flourish by being out. Out of Boston. But, you know, my big concern is Jason Tatum. How is he ready to play at all next season? Coming back from this? That'd be. Somebody's going to make a move here. Somebody's going to make a move. Somebody's going to go, all right, let's add that extra piece, and then we're going to get Giannis. Is it Houston, San Antonio? I mean, that'd be fascinating if you had Giannis and Victor de' Aaron Fox, although you might have to give up him. Well, you'll give up Stefan Castle, the rookie of the year. Yes. Marvin.
Marvin
Yeah. So with the Celtics, you'd be giving up real depth, and that's what makes.
Dan Patrick
The Celtics great, to give up somebody.
Marvin
Give up for somebody like Giannis. And I think when you're trying to win a playoff series and trying to.
Dan Patrick
Win a championship, what do we say?
Marvin
Oh, so and so doesn't have enough depth.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, yeah, I agree, but. And maybe you just say, what do we. You know, it's crazy for us to even think about doing anything because we've already won a title, but you're not going to keep Everybody. Al Horford's 39. I mean, maybe he plays one more season. Porzingis, you can't count on Drew Holiday started to show some age here. White is good, but Tatum and Brown, you know, obviously very good. But yeah, you might look at it and go, the east is winnable here. Indiana is really good. Cleveland's really good, but the west is even tougher. Yeah, Paul, I was just looking at.
Marvin
The Brooklyn Nets with their futility. They do have four first round draft picks this year.
Dan Patrick
I think they have like 8.
Marvin
20, 24, 27, or first round draft.
Dan Patrick
It sounds impressive till you look at where they're drafting. And I'll go, I always say this, who's doing the drafting? If you have Sam Presti at okc drafting. Okay. It's like, awesome. But Brooklyn, Yes, Martin.
Marvin
And to me, they're the one team in the NBA without a true fan base.
Dan Patrick
That's true. It seems fair. They're like an activity in Brooklyn, a.
Marvin
Thing you can go do and go see in Brooklyn if you're visiting or.
Dan Patrick
You live near there. But it's not a team you are live and die with. Yeah, I don't. I mean, there's not passion there, obviously. I mean, I go back to the New Jersey Nets when Calipari was the head coach. Drozen Petrovich was there, Carrie Kettles was there. And I hated that arena going over there. Keith Van Horn, it was just so sterile. Brendan Burn Arena. Yeah. You kidding me? It was. Touched a nerve. It was bad. Young Brian Scalabrini was on those Nets teams. I don't remember Scalabrini, but it was. It was. That was a long drive, you know, from Manhattan to get over to Jersey. It's not very far, but it took a long time. And then coming back and go through the Lincoln Tunnel, and you're like. Then you got to put together a story. You did a feature on Kerry Kittles. You know, you're like, yes, Marvin.
Marvin
We watched some of the best point guard play in the history of basketball at the Izod center in East Rutherford.
Dan Patrick
Jason Kidd. I mean, those prime Nets years were so good. It's like, where do they play? Yeah.
Marvin
I don't know.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. Somewhere in New Jersey. Yeah. All right, let me take a break. More phone calls coming up. Check in with the Baltimore Ravens with Derek Henry. He'll stop by as well. We're back after this. Be sure to catch the live edition of the Dan Patrick show, weekdays at 9am Eastern, 6am Pacific, on Fox Sports Radio in the iHeartRadio app. Ellen in Wisconsin. Hi, Ellen. What's on your mind today? Hey, thanks for taking my call. I just want to say you talking to the young man about waiting to get the job at ESPN was the best graduation speech I've ever heard. You know, like a lot of people this time of year, I've been tortured recently having to go to graduations. And you made five great points. You know, you said, dream, work, learn, you know, learn to evolve. You know, you're not entitled and, you know, give yourself some grace. And I just thought that was a great, great graduation speech. And it lasted like two minutes. So that. And Derek Henry is a boss. So thanks for taking my call. All right, Ellen, thank you. Yeah, they, you know, I have a lot of Students who ask me how to get it into the business. And there's no direct route. It's, it's whatever path you're on, like, I can't tell you get off your path and go to another path. You have to figure it out because, you know, I didn't have anybody there who had. Was my compass and said, hey, go this way, go that way. I was desperate. I couldn't get a job in the business. Took a job. I was doing headline sports. You're not even on camera at headline Sports. But I was at cnn. And it just so happened Keith Olbermann was the New York reporter. And Keith was leaving to take a job in Boston. And my boss said, what do you know about New York? I said, everything. And he goes, have you been there before? And I said, absolutely. He goes, would you be interested in being the New York reporter? I'd never been in New York. Nice. And. But I, you know, I survived, but I bet on myself. And that's what you have to do. But you have to find your, your path, your time frame. But do not put, I gotta be this age and if I'm not there, I'm not successful. Or if I don't get espn, that's not the be all, end all. And being on the air, you know, these guys have great careers. A lot of people I work with at ESPN have been producers, coordinating producers. They're in the business and sometimes their jobs are far more stable than those on the air. But you get, if you want to do it, don't do it because of where you're going to do it or how much you're going to make because you're going to be disappointed. Do it because you truly want to do this for a living. That's the most important part. Mike in California. Hi, Mike. What's on your mind today? Hey, Dan. Hey, Dan. That's a back room. Guys, just had an idea for end of the show. You know, rather than just do your Friday show, if you are in Atlanta and it is a Super bowl, why not do a Sunday Super Bowl? Watch just a live webcam, Dan, the Danettes, the backroom guys, significant others. Watch the game. Not a show, not a commentary, just we all get to sit in one last time with these guys that we've been with every morning. And at the end of the game, can't just walk over. The only thing you have to say is, thanks for coming along for the ride. Enjoy. Flip the switch. And that's history. Are you on Mount Everest? I mean, where are you Mike, I'm at El Centro. I'm finishing up my morning run. Okay, I'll let you finish up your run. Thank you for the phone call. I'll take that under advisement of. I got. I. I eventually have to have a final show. It feels like I keep pushing the goal post here, and then there'll be a final show there, but then we're going to go to Atlanta. There'll be a final show there, and then there'll be the final show on that Friday, but the final show will be on that Sunday. Super Bowl Sunday. Yes. Todd, we can analyze our recap of the super bowl and then do another show beyond Sunday. Yes. Paulie, maybe you do it like the.
Marvin
End of a soccer match where you're not exactly sure how much time is.
Dan Patrick
Left on the clock.
Marvin
So it could be like Tuesday, March 8th.
Dan Patrick
You're like, that's it, we're rapping. See ya. So there's going to be extra time. Yeah. Stoppage. Stoppage time. And just go. Bye. Bye. Calvin in San Antonio. Hi, Calvin. How y' all doing? Good morning. Yeah, I want. Dan, I wanted to ask your opinion. I have not. I heard a lot of you talk about where Giannis could go, but what do you think about the spurs and I. And hear me out. The spurs have the number two overall pick. They have the number 14 overall pick. Do you think the Bucks would be interested in, not the number 14 overall pick, a package of players in addition to next year's first round pick. And I say that because a lot of talk is about Cooper Flagg and Dylan Harper, but I can see if the spurs were able to pull that off and have Giannis with Wemby and Stefon Castle, I can see a scenario where they pick Ace Bailey number two overall and have all that length and shot making ability with those four. Stephon Castle, Ace Bailey, Wimby and Giannis. I think they'd be dangerous. Well, I think you're going to have to give up that second pick. I think if I'm trading you Giannis, I want your two first round picks. I'll take Stephon Castle and then might have to sprinkle in another couple of draft picks or draft pick next year or other players. You got to make it work financially, too. But I don't think you're keeping the second pick overall if that's, you know, Dylan Harper or Ace Bailey. And I'm not even sold on either one of them. And I watched them play. I watched Rutgers play, you know, actual games. I think I saw three games. And while they have unbelievable talent, they just weren't great players. They would have these highlight moments and you go, wow. You know, Ron Harper's son, he can penetrate pass. Wow. Ace Bailey, he can jump. I think his name is Arius, like a I R I O U S Arius and. But they call him Ace Bailey. I also have a suggestion for Saquon Barkley coming up, and this has to do with the COVID of Madden. And, you know, maybe next time we have him on, maybe we could workshop this a little bit. But I do have a suggestion for him moving forward. And we'll check in with the Patriots. We'll also talk to Derek Henry as well. So we got a lot coming up in the final hour of the program on this Tuesday. Todd's here. The king of comedy is here. Seaton's here. Marvin. Paulie. It's my 23rd anniversary since meeting Todd and working together. Happy anniversary. Thank you, Todd. This is an I Heart podcast.

Podcast Information:
Dan Patrick opens Hour 2 of his show with a brief overview of upcoming topics, including updates on the New York Knicks, a discussion on Frank Ragnow’s unexpected retirement from the Detroit Lions, and a preview of an upcoming appearance by Ravens running back Derek Henry. The conversation sets the stage for a multifaceted discussion encompassing both NFL and NBA developments.
Dan delves into the shocking news of Frank Ragnow, the Detroit Lions’ All-Pro center, announcing his retirement at just 29 years old.
Dan draws parallels between Ragnow’s retirement and those of Calvin Johnson and Barry Sanders, indicating a troubling trend for the Lions.
He expresses concern over the difficulty of finding a high-caliber center and questions whether the Lions had anticipated this departure, especially given Ragnow’s previous injuries and near-Hall of Fame potential.
The conversation shifts to NFL dynamics, particularly focusing on Bill Belichick and Stefan Diggs.
Dan discusses the speculation surrounding Belichick’s tenure and Diggs’ fluctuating career, highlighting the unpredictability and pressures within professional sports management.
The segment features Stefan Bondy, a Knicks beat reporter for the New York Post, providing an in-depth analysis of the Knicks’ season and broader NBA implications.
Bondy reflects on the Knicks’ successful season, reaching the conference finals for the first time in 25 years.
He acknowledges individual player performances, such as Jalen Brunson’s contributions and Mikel Bridges’ struggles, while noting the team’s overall success despite certain chemistry issues.
The discussion turns to center Carl Anthony Towns, focusing on his defensive shortcomings and its impact on the Knicks’ performance.
Bondy critiques fan reactions to Towns’ performance, emphasizing that his defensive issues were predictable based on his playing history.
Bondy explores potential offseason moves, including the highly discussed prospect of Giannis Antetokounmpo being moved from the Milwaukee Bucks.
He conjectures that such a move would significantly alter the Eastern Conference landscape, opening opportunities for teams like the Indiana Pacers and the Knicks to vie for higher standings.
Bondy underscores the speculative nature of these moves, acknowledging the complexities and potential fan backlash involved in trading superstar players.
Throughout the episode, Dan engages with callers who contribute personal stories, questions, and insights:
Matt from South Bend [08:07]: Shares an anecdote about a behind-the-scenes encounter involving a staged “fireball” event, highlighting the unpredictable nature of live shows.
Nathan from San Antonio [10:59]: Discusses the resilience of ESPN personalities like Charles Barkley, arguing that their influence and contract standings make them irreplaceable in sports media.

These interactions add a personal and interactive dimension to the show, showcasing the community and listener engagement.
In responses to caller Calvin from San Antonio, Dan and Stefan delve deeper into the logistics and feasibility of trading Giannis.
Calvin [32:35]: Proposes a hypothetical scenario where the Spurs acquire Giannis in a package deal, combining him with emerging talents like Wemby and Stefon Castle.
Stefan Bondy [32:35]: Analyzes the practicality, suggesting that Milwaukee would likely demand significant assets in return, making such a trade complex and financially challenging.
He evaluates the potential impact on team dynamics, financial structures, and the broader NBA strategy, reinforcing the speculative yet intriguing nature of superstar trades.
As the episode draws to a close, Dan reflects on the fervent Knicks fanbase and the team’s passionate support despite shortcomings.
The discussion underscores the volatile yet unwavering dedication of fans, highlighting the emotional investment inherent in sports fandom.
Dan briefly touches on the Brooklyn Nets, dismissing their championship aspirations due to past player acquisitions that didn’t yield the desired success, and laments the lack of a true fanbase compared to the Knicks.
Dan Patrick [00:00]: "Frank Ragnow announced his retirement at the age of 29. You lose both coordinators, they became head coaches. Now you lose your starting center. That's a big deal."
Stefan Bondy [18:38]: “This was the first conference finals for this franchise in 25 years. It was a new core. They won 51 games, which was the most that they've ever done since 2013.”
Stefan Bondy [21:22]: “He's slow, he struggles with pick and roll coverage and he's not a good defender. He fouls too much and he probably complains too much about fouls. So that's Carl Anthony Towns in a nutshell.”
Stefan Bondy [23:07]: “I do think Giannis ends up being moved, but I think it's like a 60, 40 proposition.”
In this episode of The Dan Patrick Show, listeners are treated to a comprehensive analysis of significant sports developments, including unforeseen player retirements, strategic team evaluations, and high-stakes trade speculations. Through expert insights from Stefan Bondy and engaging interactions with callers, Dan Patrick delivers a nuanced and informative discussion that caters to both avid sports enthusiasts and casual fans alike.
