Every day this week, Heartland Steak Company sent us some treats. Here we have pulled pork, smoked sausages, Mac and cheese, brisket, baked beans and coleslaw. Who has it better than we do? No, absolutely. Okay, Poll question here, and then we'll bring in Bo Jackson.
Seaton
Seaton, arguably one of the craziest poll questions we've ever had. But who should Tom Brady be rooting for in the Super Bowl? New England, Seattle, or neither? Okay, right now, 52% of the audience say New England. 40% say neither.
Dan Patrick
Well, he's, he's going to be rooting for the Patriots, I would hope, but I don't know. Like, he put himself in this position that he didn't need to put himself in. You could. No one's going to care if he said, you know, my heart's always with New England. Great memories and Mr. Craps is a Hall of Fame owner. Belichick's gone, so why wouldn't you root for a former teammate, Mike Vrabel. And you can root for Seattle because you're hiring their offensive coordinators. Your next head coach. Not a big deal. But Asante Samuel is not pleased as he's put Tom Brady on the clock. Is that right, Seaton? Yeah. Yeah.
Seaton
According to Asante Samuel, Tom Brady, you have 23 hours to respond or it's up. I'm going 8 bleep about who you are. He is not happy about Tom Brady's comments regarding the Patriots.
Dan Patrick
We'll keep an eye on that story there. Sante Samuels going to reveal who Tom Brady really is.
Seaton
Apparently, he's about to go ape leap in about 12 hours.
Dan Patrick
What if Tom says, hey, Asante, if you had made that interception on Eli Manning, I'd have another super bowl fair point. Ding. Bo Jackson, the 1985 Heisman Trophy winner. And he has a weekly podcast dedicated to men's health. It's Bo knows health. We'll talk about that as we make way for Bo Jackson on the program.
Stugots
I doing.
Dan Patrick
Oh, man. How you doing, Dan?
Bo Jackson
I'm doing good.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Bo Jackson
I'm doing good.
Dan Patrick
You want to bring that microphone a little bit closer to you. There you go. I'm happy you are okay.
Bo Jackson
Very happy.
Dan Patrick
Although when we played golf, you weren't happy that day.
Bo Jackson
I'm. Well, I'm not going to curse, but I'm a crappy golfer. I know my weaknesses.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Bo Jackson
And I know my strengths. Golf isn't one of.
Dan Patrick
But you still play it.
Bo Jackson
I love the sport for this simple reason. Everything else I do, I conquer. Golf kicks my ass.
Dan Patrick
And we played with Jim McMahon that day.
Bo Jackson
Yep. Barefoot Jim.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. Had all of his beers. I felt bad for his caddy because he's carrying around a 12 pack.
Bo Jackson
Yeah, she's carrying a 12 pack with ice in it. With ice. His golf bag.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Bo Jackson
His shoes. Cuz he take. He takes his shoes off.
Dan Patrick
I know, strange.
Bo Jackson
It's, it's. But hey, golf does that to people.
Dan Patrick
Well, okay, you say you conquer everything. What is it about golf though, that frustrates? I mean, it's a mental.
Bo Jackson
I would rather have that ball coming at me 95 miles an hour than have it sitting on that tea. Cuz it's intimidating as hell, period.
Dan Patrick
I know.
Bo Jackson
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
And. And athletes talk about that. That you want, you want movement. Like you're not allowed to talk when people are ready to swing. You know, if you're playing football or baseball, people are yelling and screaming.
Bo Jackson
Yeah, talk, cuss me out, do whatever. But when you're on the tee with people watching you, your sphincter is so tight.
Dan Patrick
Bo nose sphincter, yes. By the way, I still have this.
Bo Jackson
Oh, wow. Yes. White socks. Yes.
Dan Patrick
Nike sent this to me. The Bo knows just do it all. And I kept it.
Bo Jackson
Listen, do you want to sell it?
Dan Patrick
To who?
Bo Jackson
Me.
Dan Patrick
I'll give it to you.
Bo Jackson
Do you want my grandkids? I have two grandsons, two and four. And no, they will not play football.
Dan Patrick
Really? Baseball, what was your best sport?
Bo Jackson
My best sport. My best sport was on the 1st and 15th, picking up my picture. Yes, very good, very good.
Dan Patrick
Okay, but be honest, which one were you better at it?
Bo Jackson
I. I can't say. And I'm being totally honest with you.
Dan Patrick
I'll let you have this.
Bo Jackson
Because both of them, because both sports, they are so different in the way you approach football. You're tight, intense, 24 7. Baseball, you got 162 games, so you can't be that way for 162 games. You lose your mind. Baseball is relaxed to where we have to have fun while we're working, crack jokes, makes fun of somebody in the stands, do whatever we can to keep ourselves loose because that's how we play baseball.
Dan Patrick
Growing up, what was your first sport that you played?
Bo Jackson
Track. Oh, track and field.
Dan Patrick
Did you race against Herschel?
Bo Jackson
I think we raced against Herschel. I think I raced against Herschel once in the pin relays in the 60.
Dan Patrick
And how'd you do?
Bo Jackson
I think I came in second or third because. What? Somebody jumped the gun the first time and it was. And I was nervous I was going to jump the gun, and I was probably the next to the last person to get out of the blocks, and I think I still came in third.
Dan Patrick
Did you race Dion?
Bo Jackson
No, Dion and I have never raced. I just heard the thing about him and his freshman.
Dan Patrick
What did you. What did you. Did you. Did you know that story, what Dion tells?
Bo Jackson
Yes, yes. Visual.
Dan Patrick
But you remember putting your hand on his helmet, almost as if to bless him and then.
Bo Jackson
But as Dion say, I put my hand on. And I prayed for him and went to the. And just went on about my business. But yes, I remember that Dion was 17 years old. He weighed about a buck 20 with all his pads on, but he could fly.
Dan Patrick
Was he faster than you?
Bo Jackson
And he came across. He was quicker than me from point A to point B, but I straight.
Dan Patrick
Straight up speed.
Bo Jackson
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. Do you ever meet. Talk to Brian Bosworth about that goal line?
Bo Jackson
I see boss all the time.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Bo Jackson
And we talk about everything but that. Not saying that in a disrespectful way, but people talk about it when we're there. And.
Dan Patrick
And yeah, you went right into his chest. That on the goal line. Right.
Bo Jackson
As I say, with no disrespect to Brian.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Bo Jackson
Because Brian is a good guy. At that point in time, Bosworth was probably the smartest athlete playing professional sports because the way he marketed himself.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Bo Jackson
And his Bosworth image, nobody else did that but him. So he started that. The bad guy image to where he would follow Dan Marino out of bounds and push him over the water cooler.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Bo Jackson
Push him over the table. That was his bad boy image, which made him a lot of money.
Dan Patrick
What was the. Your welcome to the NFL moment?
Bo Jackson
My welcome to the NFL moment was. I don't know if it was my freshman year or my. I don't know if it was my first year or second year, but. But I got hit from behind Got hit right here and then short circuited everything. The ball came loose. I fell on the ball, and I can't remember who we were playing. I don't know if it was Cincinnati or somebody, but the ball came loose, and I'm like, get on the ball. Don't let the ball go. I fell on the ball, which made me cradle the ball. Don't let him get the ball. So I had to tell myself, get up. Get to the sideline and clear your head. Get up. So I got up. Unfasten the chin strap, get to the sideline. Just sit down. I make my way through the crowd, and as I sit on the bench, as soon as my butt touches the bench, somebody grabs my arm and say, you on the other side, MF and pushes me out on the field.
Dan Patrick
Wow.
Bo Jackson
Yes.
Dan Patrick
So you went to the wrong sideline.
Bo Jackson
I went to the wrong sideline. And I got to the sideline, and they got Steve Berline. Steve Smith, who? God rest his soul, because he's no longer with us. He was my blocking fullback from Penn State. It was their job to ask me questions because we didn't have this concussion protocol back then. The concussion protocol back then was, if you could tell us what you do on this play, then you're good. And I didn't know that. And this happened the end of the first quarter. I didn't play the whole second quarter because they were asking me questions. I didn't know that I was married. I didn't know that I had three kids. I didn't know what day it was. And Steve Berline asked me this, what got me back on track. He said, when's payday? I said, Monday. And so that brought me back.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Bo Jackson
And I'm watching the police. This in Raider Stadium, and this is in the Coliseum. So I'm watching these police officers, and they're all running. I'm like, where the hell's all these cops going? And in Raider Stadium, if you come there as. As a visitor for the other team, and if you say something, you know what happens?
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Bo Jackson
So the cops are running, trying to break up fights, and all of a sudden, I hear a gunshot. Pow. And everybody duck. And I see my teammates running. And Steve Smith gets up, and I'm like, smitty, where is everybody going? He said, it's halftime, fool. Follow me. So I grabbed the back of his jersey, and he took me to the locker room.
Dan Patrick
Wow. What was your welcome to Major League Baseball moment?
Bo Jackson
Welcome to Major League Baseball moment? I don't think I have. I don't Think I had one. But my welcome to the Major League baseball moment was the first batter I faced was. Was hall of famous Steve Carlton. He was playing for the White Sox, okay?
Dan Patrick
So tail end of his career.
Bo Jackson
Tail end of his career. And he hung me a slider and I put it almost on the concourse in left field, but they said it was foul. But the left fielder said that ball was fair. So I end up hitting a two hopper to second base and beating it out for my first hit.
Dan Patrick
Well, that. And people made a big deal of that, of your speed with a routine grounder. And it was one of those, like you were not taking it for granted that I'm gonna, you know, ground out second base. No, you didn't stop running.
Bo Jackson
But I tell all the kids because I. Because I'm an ambassador for the White Sox and the Royal. So I go to spring training and I tell all the young kids. I go over and speak to the young kids in the minor leagues. I said, you have one goal, and that's to get out of here and make it to the big leagues. And I say, your only goal when you make it to the big leagues is to take somebody's job. I said, that's how I went at it. That's how you should look at it. You're there to take somebody's job because if you can't, you're going to get sit right back down and you're going to be on the bus.
Dan Patrick
Bo knows mental health. How'd this come about?
Bo Jackson
Bono's men's health.
Dan Patrick
Oh, men's health.
Bo Jackson
Bull knows mental. And the way that comes up, I will ask you this question, okay? This for all the men on the stage. How often do you sit up with your buddies or anybody and talk about you went and got your prostate checked or went to get a colonoscopy or pfsa? We don't talk about that as men. As men. For this reason. We think that it's makes us less of a man, period. The only time we talk about that is when we're behind closed doors with our doctors, period. We don't talk about that. Yeah, I announced here for the first time, I'm a cancer survivor. I had my prostate taken out. And this, this is coming from somebody that a lot of men from around the country look up to. And if I can talk about it, we should talk about it as men. Because if you watch women on national tv, on any TV show, they talk about everything. Everything. Yeah, we keep all this balled up inside of us, which messes with Us from a mental standpoint, keeps us cranky and so forth and so on. If you mention your prostate, first thing a guy's gonna talk about, because this is how we think as guys. Oh, my sex life is ruined. That's not true. That's not true. And I say this to all of the men in your list. List and an audience. Don't be afraid to go see your doctor. Prostate. Get your PSA check, colonoscopy. And I would say this. When I was a sophomore at Auburn, woke up one morning, go use the bathroom to get ready for class. I use the bathroom, get to flush your toilet. There's blood in my stool. Go see my trainer. If I had ignored that like young people do, I know I wouldn't be here right now. Because colon. Because colon cancer runs in my family. Prostate cancer runs in my family, and so forth and so on. So most guys, even though when we're out here, we're big and tough, manly and everything. But you know something? You're scared shitless to go talk to your doctor because you're afraid of what he's going to tell you.
Dan Patrick
Well, I tell people, don't wait till you're 50 to have your first colonoscopy. Absolutely, you should do it when you're 30. Like, there's no just. Because they say, oh, when you get to be 50, and I say, don't wait. Prostate. I had my blood taken earlier this week testing for that because I had, I had levels that were a little higher and they were nervous. And I had my blood taken on Monday here in San Francisco.
Bo Jackson
You get your blood test done and then they combine it with your Gleason score. You know, that comes out in the high sixes, sevens or above. You need to get something done. And I can't tell you what to do as far as men out here in the country, but the reason, the reason I had my prostate removed three months ago. And I'm doing fine. I'm doing great. The reason I had my prostate taken out is because I get emotional when I say this. I have two grandsons who I have more fun with them two than any football game, baseball game I've ever played. And my job as a papa is a spoiler shit out of my grandkids, period. Period. He has so many battery powered vehicles that I have to park my truck outside and keep all his vehicles in the space. So that's, that's, that's it. I want to be around to help raise my grandkids. Not only that, to be here for My family. Now, I'm not seeing a lot on this scene as far as sports world because it was my job. Not saying that I don't like or love what I used to do, but I found something better. I think the best gift God can give us is grandkids, and I love that. So I want to be around to help raise them.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, I got two of them.
Bo Jackson
See them growing. Yeah, they are the best, aren't they? Oh, but you can bring them over to your house, spoil the crap out of them, Jack. Jack them up on, as they say, Skittles. Skittles and Coke.
Dan Patrick
And then send them home.
Bo Jackson
And send them home.
Dan Patrick
At the end of the day, it's Bo Knows Health, a weekly podcast dedicated to men's health. And thank you for sharing.
Bo Jackson
Thank you, Dan.
Dan Patrick
And you know that the message is a powerful one. We just did a PSA for prostate cancer yesterday. All of my guys.
Bo Jackson
Yes.
Dan Patrick
And sending the message out so the.
Bo Jackson
Time get the message out. But the thing that I want to do is, yes, I'm Bo Jackson. I did this, I did that. But I'm vulnerable, just like you. I want guys to start talking about this. I'm even thinking about taking this on the road to cities because I want to help raise funds to help guys who don't have the proper funds to go get a PSA test to get a colonoscopy because it's needed. We don't talk about it. And I'm starting my podcast just so I can peel the layers off of that onion so we can talk about it.
Dan Patrick
Bo Knows health.
Bo Jackson
Men's health.
Dan Patrick
Bo knows men's health.
Bo Jackson
Thank you, Dan.
Dan Patrick
Great to see you again.
Bo Jackson
Thank you and God bless. Thank you all.
Dan Patrick

The stage is set for Super Bowl 60, and you can watch it all unfold Sunday. It'll be Seattle and New England, and it'll be on NBC. And Peacock, I've known Bo a long time. I interviewed him in 1985 after he won the Heisman Trophy. I was working as a reporter at CNN in New York. And, you know, he said, you know, when you're from 15 to 30, those are 15 of the dumbest years. You say stupid things. And so he just talked about his maturity. But I appreciated him sharing. That's the important part. Because with Bo Jackson, you think, you know, that's a living legend. And here he is saying he had prostate cancer and willing to share that with his podcast. All righty. By the way, we'll talk to Melissa Stark and Kaylee Hartung. They're the sideline reporters. They'll join us in an hour from now. Andrew Luck is going to join us. At the top of the hour. I got Kirk Herbstreet and his dog Herbie. Why don't you come on out since your dog is kind of taking over. Kirk Herbstreet and his dog Petey. Hi, buddy.
Kirk Herbstreet
What's up, man? How you doing, bud? Hey, guys. How are you? He just kind of walk around.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Bo Jackson
Chill out.
Dan Patrick
Hey, Peter.
Kirk Herbstreet
Hey, buddy. He'll probably sit over here.
Dan Patrick
Does he want the chair?
Kirk Herbstreet
He might. Come here, babe. He's checking for these other dogs right now.
Dan Patrick
Hey, come here, Come here. Is he getting jaded because he's a celebrity now?
Kirk Herbstreet
I mean, you know what he's handling? He's handled it pretty well. He's handled pretty well. He's. He's had a long year of travel and he's a character. Two years old, golden retriever.
Dan Patrick
And how does your wife feel that she's got competition for you?
Kirk Herbstreet
I have four golden. Yeah, yeah. I have an eight year old. Pete. Come here, buddy.
Bo Jackson
Come here, Come here.
Kirk Herbstreet
Come up here.
Bo Jackson
Come up here.
Dan Patrick
All right, Petey.
Kirk Herbstreet
There you go.
Dan Patrick
Can bring the microphone if he wants to talk? I don't know. Oh, is he going to get in your lap?
Kirk Herbstreet
Oh, yeah, no, he'll just kind of hang, but yeah, we've got a four of them. And my wife, you Know she loves them, so it makes it. They're just like family for us. Four sons and four male dogs.
Dan Patrick
So you're joining us on behalf of Spruce.
Kirk Herbstreet
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
So that's what he's got here. Oh, okay.
Kirk Herbstreet
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Got his little necker Chip. Yeah. He is locked in.
Kirk Herbstreet
Yeah. How you been doing? You having a good week?
Dan Patrick
Yeah, it's been fun.
Kirk Herbstreet
Good.
Dan Patrick
Like when you get to talk to Bo Jackson.
Kirk Herbstreet
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
And. And he relates to everybody by talking about prostate cancer that he just overcame. And, you know, we did a PSA yesterday to have awareness to that getting tested and colon. You know, guys don't want to talk about that stuff.
Kirk Herbstreet
No.
Dan Patrick
You're like, no, no, no. Wait. Which one is the. The finger test and.
Bo Jackson
Right.
Dan Patrick
Well, that's prostate. Yeah.
Kirk Herbstreet
Yeah, yeah. But important stuff. And it's cool that Bo is, you know, great that he's healthy and feeling good, but great that he can shed some light on it with his own experience.
Dan Patrick
And that's one of those guys, like, the greatest athlete who was never a Hall of Famer. Right. Like, he didn't play long enough in either.
Kirk Herbstreet
But I think it was the Cincinnati game. Right.
Dan Patrick
That he got hit.
Kirk Herbstreet
Yeah. Where he got the hip.
Dan Patrick
Oh, that was in Oakland. When he got in Oakland.
Kirk Herbstreet
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Yes. Yeah. And then that was it.
Kirk Herbstreet
Yeah. Never. Never the same.
Dan Patrick
He was done.
Kirk Herbstreet
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
People.
Kirk Herbstreet
Our generation appreciates him. But I don't know. You know, I try to tell my kids about him. My son Ty's here right now. He is. He's nodding his head like I know all about it. I brainwashed him properly. But I. I. Man, you remember when he climbed that wall? Just had full speed, just ran up along the wall.
Dan Patrick
That was All Star Game. I think it was the all star Game.
Kirk Herbstreet
And hit one. The center field. Hit a bomb. You know, he was just. He was one on one.
Dan Patrick
And then when he had that, I think, 93 yard run where he ran through the tunnel.
Kirk Herbstreet
Yeah. Remember that showdown with him and Boz.
Dan Patrick
At the goal line?
Kirk Herbstreet
Yeah. Yeah.
Dan Patrick
It didn't go well. It did not. It did not go well.
Kirk Herbstreet
But that was a great era.
Dan Patrick
You want to talk Super Bowl? Yeah. You want to talk college football?
Kirk Herbstreet
Talk anything. You want to talk about trying to.
Dan Patrick
Figure out where we're headed in five years with college football. Because it feels like it is fluid.
Kirk Herbstreet
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
And now college football is kind of saying, hey to Congress, hey, can you help us clean up our sport?
Kirk Herbstreet
Which is never a good thing.
Dan Patrick
No. But it feels like that's their cop out that we. We can't handle this. Can you get a commissioner for college football?
Kirk Herbstreet
I love the idea because I think right now we're still legislating the sport as if it were the 1980s, where it's a regional sport. You know, where we grew up, if Woody Hayes or Earl Bruce was a coach at Ohio State, the only thing that mattered was the Rose Bowl. And if you're down where Bear Bryant was, it was all about getting to the Sugar Bowl. And that's now, unfortunately, that's now in the past for college football. Now it's all about the cfp. And yet we're. We're governing this sport with conference commissioners that are worried about their constituents and their region. No one's looking at the entire country like, what's best. And here's what we're going to do. I'm the czar, and I'm taking in all this information. This is what we need to do. Nobody's doing that right now. My only hope is Nick Saban, truly. And people can say, well, he's got an Alabama twist. If you really know Nick Saban, he's got a college football twist. He cares about the players, he cares about the sport. And I think him being involved with Congress, him and being involved with the president, he's got a lot of people's ears. And I really think he has good intentions. So I'm hopeful that. That he'll be able to help out. But right now, it's just so impossible to predict where we'll be with this sport yet. Popularity has never been bigger. You know, people still go to these games. People tune in. I mean, what a 30, I think, for the. For the national title. People love it. It's just. It's frustrating to see what's going on on the. Off the field.
Dan Patrick
Talking to Kirk, Herb street and his dog. Well, we're not talking to Peter. He's not paying attention here. Does he get along with his brothers and sisters?
Kirk Herbstreet
He does, yeah.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. But do the other ones? Are they jealous that he's.
Kirk Herbstreet
When the bags start to get zipped and. And packed up.
Dan Patrick
Oh, they know.
Kirk Herbstreet
He totally knows that he's going. And the other three just shame me. They're just like, I can't believe. I can't believe you're doing it again.
Dan Patrick
So tell me what you're doing with Spruce.
Kirk Herbstreet
Well, I. I lost Ben, my other dog, last year, and I've lost a lot of dogs at young ages. I've always been concerned and wondered why that might be, and so I'm very careful with what I have my Dogs around, what I feed them, what's going on in the yard. And for me, Spruce is a very young company. They're actually just in their second year. Only 10 ingredients in their, in their product and it's pet friendly. And so that was something that was important to me to. If I'm going to use something on my property, I want to try to make sure I'm giving these guys.
Dan Patrick
So this is weed control.
Kirk Herbstreet
Weed control. Yeah. Yeah. It's not for the lawn. It's something you would use in a, in a bed or on the sidewalk. But the fact that it's pet friendly and weed deadly is something that I was excited about.
Dan Patrick
Good. Good.
Kirk Herbstreet
I want this guy to stay around as long as, as long as possible.
Dan Patrick
I've talked about Fernando Mendoza that. Okay, he's the best quarterback this year and I, I know it sounds like a slight. I don't know how good he is.
Kirk Herbstreet
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
To go into the NFL.
Kirk Herbstreet
Right.
Dan Patrick
Because you know, there, there's only a couple can't miss guys that have come out of college. You know, Andrew Luck is going to join us.
Kirk Herbstreet
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
He was a can't miss.
Kirk Herbstreet
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Elway can't miss. How many guys would you say you can recall can't miss going into the NFL?
Kirk Herbstreet
Oh, man. I, I mean you've named, you've named a few over the last 10 years. They're always, it's always debatable but, but.
Dan Patrick
It'S not like was Marino wasn't a can't miss because you know there were whispers at, at the draft.
Kirk Herbstreet
Right.
Dan Patrick
And fell in the draft. Peyton was.
Kirk Herbstreet
I think he.
Dan Patrick
For the Florida thing, he couldn't win. The felt like.
Kirk Herbstreet
I still felt like he was a camp miss Luck for sure.
Dan Patrick
But Steve Young wasn't. Montana wasn't. Brady wasn't.
Kirk Herbstreet
Obviously. No.
Dan Patrick
Even Mahomes.
Kirk Herbstreet
No. No, I. Mahomes was not at all.
Dan Patrick
I, I think Trevor Lawrence is, has been labeled that he was and now maybe we're starting to see, starting to.
Kirk Herbstreet
Kind of see that. I, I'm, you know, nobody's figured out high school to college who's going to be that five star that hits. There are a lot of them that don't. Nobody's figured out who's going to be the first pick in at this position end of the draft who's going to hit. One thing I think I'm starting to take more and more into consideration is just how many reps these guys get in college because I think it's not about how big he is, how strong his arm is to Me, it's about, it's about the ability to process and, and it's, there are fewer and fewer that have the ability that guys in the, in the 90s, early 2000s, when they put the offense on their back and they said, hey, you see the safeties, you understand the why. And I think because of that, offensive coordinators in the NFL have had to kind of tweak how they manage the scheme. I think from what I've seen from Fernando Mendoza, and there's still a lot to be seen if he can go to that next level. He's not the guy that you put the offense on his back and you say you're that guy, you're going to make. It doesn't matter who's at receiver and running back. He is the guy that if you got a really good offensive line, you got a back, you got a few receivers, he is a guy that you could put in charge of the offense and is not going to get you in trouble and is going to make really good decisions and is a lot better, I think, skill wise than maybe people right now are willing to give him.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, but I worry about the offensive line because you get a first year coach, you get a first year quarterback, I'm saying, and a bad offensive line. I know. And you got a David Carr situation. Texans.
Kirk Herbstreet
Exactly. Fair.
Dan Patrick
And that's, that's what would worry me.
Kirk Herbstreet
Yeah, it just depends on who's going to pull the trigger. I think they got to think about what's around that position, especially if you want immediate results. But if you, if you're good in a lot of spots and you put him as your quarterback, then I think that's going to work out pretty good.
Dan Patrick
And you know, when I had you on, I said, you know, a lot of times we forget when somebody says something. Correct. And you're the, you're the first guy I heard who said, you know, Indiana getting Fernando Mendoza, hey, keep an eye on this guy. And he was playing a cow.
Kirk Herbstreet
Right.
Dan Patrick
And you know, that's why I wanted to have you on, to acknowledge that. And the other thing, I've said this before, I don't know if anybody is better at telling me what just happened on a play than you.
Kirk Herbstreet
Thank you.
Dan Patrick
I think it's, and I don't know if it's, it's something that's in you, it's, it's learned. But when you get to that telestrator right after the play, you know, balls down handed, the official. Boom. So how do you.
Kirk Herbstreet
Funny you say that. I.
Dan Patrick
But how do you see it that when you're watching a play, because you're gonna go, look at this, this chip block here, and then this back gets out, but he misses his block and it happens so quickly.
Kirk Herbstreet
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
You got the answers to the test?
Kirk Herbstreet
I, I've tried as I've come up, I started with Mike Tirico, you know, years ago at ESPN on Thursday night. Then I went to Brent Musburger. Mike, I just felt like with Tim Corrigan as the producer, I was like getting a master's class without understanding it. And I, I really try to pride myself on the why a play just developed and how it developed and then putting it in terms that the broader audience can appreciate. I try never to talk down to an audience. I try to talk with an audience and I just feel that I, I, I always talk to my producer about trying to see that next level analysis. I don't want to just say, wow, that was a great throw, or what a great route. I, I want to, I want to try to tell the viewer at home who maybe doesn't have the perspective that I just did watching it, how that play just unfolded. So challenging part, as you said, it happens at six to eight seconds. You're communicating with the truck. You're listening to the play by play guy and, and you want to try to tell them you, it's important you show me this because I want to show that guard did a great job. I really love talking about line play and how the guard got up to the linebacker after he helped on the double team and climbed up. So probably a lot of reps, but I just, I really work at trying to do the next level analysis in real time, not next week in a studio show, but doing it immediately and not even after a commercial break. I like to try to do it right now just to try to show, you know, we're, we're tuned in to.
Dan Patrick
What'S going on, but I don't know if, and playing quarterback, I don't know if you can see it through that lens that, okay, I know what this play, I know this formation.
Kirk Herbstreet
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
I know what they might be doing on this. I'm assuming that that's your homework.
Kirk Herbstreet
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
But to be able to do it and diagram too. Yeah, it's, I mean, it's, I don't know what kind of student you were at Ohio State, but, But you're summa cum laude when it comes to this. Yeah, I mean, I can check the record.
Kirk Herbstreet
Yeah, you can check that.
Dan Patrick
Centerville High School.
Kirk Herbstreet
Centerville High School.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. But remember, C's get degrees. That's, that's our, the gym city.
Kirk Herbstreet
That's our, that's our, that's our philosophy.
Dan Patrick
Are you rooting for anybody?
Kirk Herbstreet
Well, I, I did both these teams on Thursday night without. And I remember when we did the Rams Seahawks game late. I really thought both those teams were two of the best teams I saw all year. But I thought Seattle's defense, man, they are so good. And if Sam plays with Sam's capable plan, I just, that I'm talking that night, I was like, I think nobody's going to beat these guys. If they get home field, they're going to win it all. And now that we're here, I, I just think, I think it's. First of all, if you're looking at a. I think it's a low scoring game. I think both these defenses are outstanding. What Vrabel's been able to do in one year, incredible. Another example of his leadership and how he creates that culture. I think Seattle's going to win a three point game. I think it's going to be a back and forth game. Like typical NFL game goes into the fourth quarter. That one possession is going to be critical late. And I think Seattle went a 24, 21 kind of game.
Dan Patrick
Did you think May would be this good, this fast?
Kirk Herbstreet
No, no. How could you?
Dan Patrick
The number of analysts who were like, well, he played in North Carolina.
Kirk Herbstreet
There was that and it was the system that he was coming out of. He showed moments that you're just like this kid, this kid's special. Then you talk with him and then you. It goes to a whole nother level because he's so impressive. Having three older brothers getting roughed up, playing golf, playing basketball. I really think all of that developed him into becoming the player that he is. He has that all shucks about him. His defensive players love him, his offensive linemen love him. He's that guy like everybody wants to win for him. There's no resentment with this guy because he's genuinely humble. And then you throw on top of it what Josh McDaniels is doing with him. We had him in a preseason against the Giants and I remember talking to Josh McDaniels about him and he just, at that point he didn't know that they were going to go to the super bowl, but you could tell there was a lot there that he loved and combine that with Trevion Henderson and the running game. But I think Josh McDaniels deserves a ton of credit for what he's done.
Dan Patrick
With May he's Kirk Curb street and his dog Peter.
Kirk Herbstreet
He's locked in. There you go, baby.
Dan Patrick
He can stay if he wants. He's got a calming good flowing. Bruce is the worry free weed killer. Pet friendly and safe for people pets bees use as directed. Great to see you, Herbie. Congrats on your success. Thank you, buddy. And Petey, thanks for joining us. We're back after this. In the Dan Patrick show, Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in the nation. Catch all of our shows@foxsportsradio.com and within the iHeartRadio app. Search FSR to listen. Live. Sunrise here in San Francisco, another beautiful day. Weather's been great. You know, people are curious that there was going to be rain or overcast. It's been sunny and temperatures in the mid-60s should be close to that on Super Bowl Sunday. I know initially they talked about some rain, maybe 35%. I think that's down to maybe about 15%. So hopefully there's no, no rain in the forecast there. That was fun. You know, you have Herbie in, you bring his dog in. Bo Jackson comes in, it's like that's super bowl week. And when people talk about, oh, you know, interviewing and you do a good job interviewing, I can do, I can ask the best questions. If somebody doesn't want to share their answers, it's not a great interview. The interview is that person trusting me. Like Bo Jackson sharing what he was sharing about prostate cancer and getting emotional, talking about that, having two grandkids you want to see grow up. And he had prostate cancer surgery three months ago. So that's the, that's where you have a good interview that has to be reciprocated. And, and I've known Beau a long time and for him to trust me, I mean, that's the ultimate compliment. Let me see Lucas in Texas. Hi, Luke. Welcome back. What do you have for me today?
Caller
Hey, Dan, Good morning.
Dan Patrick
Morning.
Caller
I just want to say, first off, the green screen looks great. It almost looks like you guys are really out there in San Francisco.
Dan Patrick
Thank you, Lucas. Thank you.
Caller
But no, what I wanted to call in, it's the Tom Brady stuff. I called in probably six or seven weeks ago and said there was a moment on the NFL game of the week broadcast where Kevin Burkhart gave Tom a layup kind of comment of, hey, look at your pat.
Dan Patrick
So that, you know, they were looking.
Caller
At the playoffs rankings and look how they're doing. They're doing pretty well. And There was a 25 second awkward silence where it feels like his brain just says, I cannot give them credit. It just felt so weird. And if anything, say, I have two dogs in the fight, I've got my future coach, or I've got my teammate that I won Super Bowls with. So it just feels odd. And I think that's the one thing that's kind of off putting with Brady and the average fan.
Dan Patrick
All right, thank you, Luke. I mean, we already know you have a bias towards the Raiders, and it's okay to have a bias towards the Patriots, and you can have a bias towards Clint Kubiak, who's going to be your next head coach. It's okay. But, you know, if you say, does he have too many biases? I guess, you know, the Raiders thing is always tricky. The Patriots, everybody knows you know your legacy there and you got a statue there. Nothing. You know, nobody's going to be like, I can't believe Tom said he's pulling for the Patriots. Nobody's going to have a problem with that. Yes, Marvin.
Bo Jackson
And he's got 12 hours until Asante Samuel go score. Stir throwing him.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. Any other word from Asante Samuel? His teammate, Seaton?
Seaton
You know, let me see. I'll have to check. In the meantime, I could tell you poll question results if you'd like. Uh, who should Tom Brady root for in this Super Bowl? New England, Seattle, or neither. Right now, 55% of the audience have neither. Excuse me. Have New England. And then the biggest dog on today's show, Bo Jackson, Gerald McCoy, Andrew Luck, or Peter Herbstreet. Right now, bo Jackson has 74% of the vote. Peter Herbstreak coming in second place, though, with a very respectable 17%.
Dan Patrick
Petey was great. Yeah, Petey was great.
Seaton
Gross disrespect here for Gerald McCoy, who is in. Has 3.5% of that vote. People are sleeping on that.
Dan Patrick
John in California. Hi, John. Hey, Dan.
Caller
Got two things for you.
Dan Patrick
I happen to be in the audience right behind you. Okay. John with the. With the T shirt on, but. Oh, okay. Yeah. This is the one year anniversary. I had a heart attack a year ago.
Caller
And paying attention to your health is very important.
Dan Patrick
And I drove myself right to the emergency room and survived through your show and watching my health. Well, congratulations. And we didn't play a role in you having the heart attack, did we? No. Okay. I just wanted to make sure. I didn't know if you came out here and there's a lawsuit, you're going to blame us for the lack of entertainment that gave you a heart attack there. Maybe Fritzi said something that was actually funny.
Kirk Herbstreet
Wow.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. Thank you, John. Thank you. Thank you for joining us in our audience there. Mike in Virginia. Hi, Mike. What's on your mind?
Caller
Morning, Dan.
Dan Patrick
511.
Caller
Fluctuating 175, 185. Just a quick poll question suggestion for the last hour. If you could see one athlete play their whole career, no injuries. Bo Jackson, Tiger Woods, Ken Griffey, or Grant Hill. And a quick shout out to Amy Lixis, Kingsmill High. Suck at your wits. And Clinton Massey.
Dan Patrick
All right, thank you, Mike. I would say Bo Jackson because if I had him healthy and he wanted to play both sports, would we have had something that was even bigger than Shohei Ohtani? I mean, it was a small window, but it was a powerful, impactful window for Bo. And, you know, Tiger might be the greatest golfer of all time. Grant Hill went through a lot. Grant Hill was an incredible player. And then they never got surgery. Correct. I'd like to go back and find out how many times he had successful surgery because I don't think it worked for Grant Hill. Who was the other player that he said.
Bo Jackson
Ken Griffey Jr.
Dan Patrick
He still had a great that first half. The first 10. Bo didn't have that. Felt like Bo had four years in four years. But if you could have had him play 10 and 10, I mean, wow. Yeah, Paulie.
Kirk Herbstreet
Yeah.
Stugots
Bo Jackson didn't have a ton of.
Dan Patrick
Carries and a ton of games.
Kirk Herbstreet
He averaged 5.5 yards per carry when.
Dan Patrick
He did play in the NFL.
Kirk Herbstreet
That is a yard better than a Pro bowl running back has.
Dan Patrick
And he talked about speed. Straight ahead speed. He said he was faster than Deion, but Dion had side to side speed.
Bo Jackson
Weighed 40 pounds heavier.
Dan Patrick
Oh, my God. All right, two hours in the books on this Thursday. Andrew Luck will join us. Paulie's excited. I'm very excited to have Luck on the show. Oh, I thought you were going to do your Andrew Luck impersonation.
Stugots
See me.
Dan Patrick
Okay. Not doing the Andrew Luck impersonation in front of him. Okay. All right, final hour right after this.
Kirk Herbstreet
