We got football tonight it's the Bengals at the Cowboys. The Cowboys getting five and a half hour two on this Monday. Dan and the Dan Edge Dan Patrick Show. Hope you had a great weekend. Lot to talk about. We talked to David Pollack, former Georgia All American was with ESPN College Game Day he'll join us coming up here in a little bit. Stat of the day brought to you by Panini America. The official trading cards of the program. Sunday night, it'll be the Seahawks and the packers. Prime time Sunday, 7 Eastern on NBC. And Peacock, which is where you can watch this program. Thank you for downloading the app. Our radio affiliates around the country, the Mets have shelled out $765 million for Juan Soda. I don't know if it takes talent to like when somebody says, wow, okay, congratulations. That I think their owner Steve Cohen said, look, I'm going to pay more than anybody else. And that's music to Scott Boris ears. That's all we want. It's like, is this the right place for my guy or the right amount of money for my guy? And it's the right amount of money for his guy. So Juan Soto is going to the Mets. $765 million for 15 years. Congratulations. I think. 765. Yes. Marvin.
Dan Patrick
Oh, just ready to applaud him.
David Pollock
Oh, you were his parents, his siblings. What's life going to be like in sports in the year 2040?
Dan Patrick
Wow.
David Pollock
What's it going to be like? So when this contract is up By Juan Soto, 20:40 Guys are going to get a billion. Who's getting a billion dollars? Baseball players. Billion, I would think, because you already got up to 700 now. 765. 765. Do I hear 780? 780? 780. How much? 780. Do I hear $800 million? Yes.
Dan Patrick
Crazy is that the person who's going to get a billion dollars is probably like three or four years old right now.
David Pollock
Well, you're going to have $100 million a year. Basketball player. That's going to happen first. Football players, quarterbacks are probably going to get in the next five years. Maybe you get to 75 million, I'm guessing. But basketball, the NBA, it just do the math. And I still think Shay Gilgis, Alexander or Luka Doncic are going to be the first 100 million dollar a year basketball players. Baseball. We're getting close to like not necessarily how much you make per season, but it's how much you make the totality of that contract. 8773 DP show email address DP danpatrick.com Twitter handle it DP show the Chiefs continue to do it. I don't think they're a great team, but they're great at winning. They know what to do, when to do it. And there's a certain calm that you have, there's certain athletes, certain teams, certain coaches that they prepare for this. They're good. They're just good at being able to kind of like block everything out. And look at the last play with Mahomes and Kelsey. They've been doing this a long time. Nothing fancy about it. It's just Mahomes has this ability to make a subtle move when he feels pressure. Subtle move, get out of the way. He finds Kelsey, and then you kick a field goal. Here's Andy Reed after the game.
Dan Patrick
I have trust in Matthew, so I was good with where we were.
David Pollock
Percentages are pretty high.
Dan Patrick
I know we've won a game in that same situation on the opposite end, so I get it. But he's a, he's a solid kicker, so I wasn't too worried about it.
David Pollock
Yeah, you just, you have Mahomes, you just start there. Nobody has him. Josh Allen was wonderful against the Rams. Incredible. But this Kansas City defense is good and they, they keep you in the game. And then when it comes down to the final two minutes, as we saw with Brady, as you saw at times with Montana, it was like, oh, you're in trouble. And that's the feeling. I can't imagine what that, that's like for the defense when they're going, God, you want your offense just score a touchdown, just score to make it tough. Now they have a chance. And then you go out there and you know, he just looking for one little moment and he got it and they won again. And it's not by accident. I mean, they've done this, they continue to do this. And the game has turned into they're all one score games. It feels like 99 games have been decided by six points or less. That's the most through week 14 in NFL history. Yeah, they continue to set that record every single week. These games come down to one score. And that's why one moment, one mistake, and then you're done. And the great teams take advantage. They seize that moment. They embrace that moment. They love that moment. Yes.
Dan Patrick
Mark, if you're a Chargers fan, did you feel good about that yesterday?
Marvin
Like now going, if we make the.
Dan Patrick
Playoffs, we can really make some noise when we get in there.
David Pollock
I thought they were going to win the game prior to the start. I thought they're going to win this game and you have your moment there. But the Chargers got to get to that point where they, they can win these games where Justin Herbert says, I got it. Jim Harbaugh says, hey, we got this. They had their opportunity and they're still a dangerous team. It's kind of interesting though how Justin Herbert's being used. Look at some of these quarterbacks. The Bills don't want Josh Allen throwing the ball 35 times. There's so much better when he does it. Jalen Hertz with the Eagles, he didn't really do much damage. Justin Herbert, he does. You know, he's going to. He threw a lot more than I thought he was going to, but you kind of want to get that balance. We're seeing. These offenses want to be a little more balanced now. I don't know if they're going to be like that in the playoffs, but they do look for balance here. The Ravens run the ball. You know, all these teams. The Eagles are probably a run first team. Now Buffalo runs the ball really well. Like this is what teams want to get. Give me balance here a little bit. Or maybe it's 60, 40 because it wasn't that long ago when it was probably 80, 20 passing to running. And your running back was a guy who caught passes. Yes, Paulie.
Dan Patrick
Two years ago, Justin Herbert had 699 passing attempts. This year he's on pace for 530 same number of games.
David Pollock
Yeah, they want that because that means that you can control the clock. You are probably ahead in the game. And I think that's really the important part of all of this. You're getting towards the postseason now. Can you do what you've done in the postseason and with Kansas City, as much as they're not a great team, but having that ability to win, who else game on the line, what other team do you go? They can be as good as Kansas City. And the answer is nobody. Truly nobody. I can I trust Jalen Hertz in that moment. He's going to make that big play. Josh Allen, is he going to make that big play? Justin Herbert, Jordan Love, Jared Goff, there's one Mahomes. That's it. Because he has shown that he can do that. These other players, you know, Jared Goff has gotten to a Super bowl, an NFC title game. Jordan Love has played well last year in the postseason. Josh Allen, we've seen him play well up until he doesn't play well. You know, Joe Burrow's not going to be in the playoffs. Tua, by the way, is playing really well. I watched a lot of that game with the jets and he looks really it. This is going to sound like it's not a compliment. He looks efficient. Like it. There's just an efficiency there and spreading the wealth around Russell Wilson Jr. III played well. Although I'm watching. And Jameis throws a touchdown pass and I'm like, okay. And Nate Burleson comes on to give the update from cbs. He's like, you know something about Jamis is must see tv just like Jerry Springer. And speaking of Jerry, Jerry, Judy with a touch I go, okay, all right, now let me see the next time he gets the ball because I can pretty much guarantee James Winston's going to throw an interception. And bingo bango bongo, there you go. He had two, two interceptions and two touchdown passes.
Dan Patrick
One for me, one for you.
David Pollock
He's a sharer.
Dan Patrick
He's a carer.
David Pollock
Yes, he is. Yes. Marvin.
Dan Patrick
So he still hasn't been delivered from those pick sixes.
David Pollock
No, he is not. No, he is not.
Dan Patrick
He has fall going back to Mahomes and winning the mvp. It's. If he ever wins it again, it probably won't be stats. Two years ago he had 41 touchdowns. Last year in 16 games, 27 touchdowns, 14 picks for him. That's below average. This year he's on Pace for 27 touchdowns and 14 picks.
David Pollock
Yeah, yeah. I think those days are gone of, you know, these guys throw in 40 touchdown passes. And I go back, you know, year two, he threw 50 touchdown passes. Second year in the league, first year starting, 50 touchdown passes. I mean that's like Dan Marino. His second year they went to the Super Bowl. All right, how about some phone calls? Best and worst of the weekend Vince in Austin. Vince, welcome back.

David Pollock
Yeah, cherry pie. All right, maybe a blueberry pie. Fritzy, don't Google cherry pie in Austin.
Dan Patrick
I did that once before. I had to bring my computer into the shop.
David Pollock
Yeah, yeah, don't do that, Vince. I think you should do a blueberry pie.
Dan Patrick
I'M allergic to blueberries. Got you there. My favorite is key lime or lemon meringue.
David Pollock
You can do that too, but the lemon will burn a little bit there. Just saying. But you. You owe Marvin that. You called him out and I'm glad you called in to deliver. Yes. Seaton. Yeah. You want to be careful with the citrus pies. Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Don't leave them on too long.
David Pollock
They burn. Yes, yes. And maybe you can get cherry pie to come over and smash you with a pie. Vince.
Dan Patrick
This is a family show, guys.
David Pollock
Come on. Thank you, Vince.
Marvin
Make it ring.
David Pollock
Cherry pie. Randy in Idaho. Hi, Randy. What's on your mind today? Best and worst of the weekend. That Ram Bill game, very exciting. Worse, the officiating. In the Ram Bill game, they lost. They lost 11 seconds. There was an offensive PI in the first half that was atrocious. And if anyone can explain to me how that wasn't holding by Cooper cup on the Rams final touchdown is beyond me. I'm a high school football official and holding a lot of times is positioning. Cooper cup gets lazy and he wraps his arms, both arms around the defender out in front of the officials at the point of attack. That's holding. Bad officiating in that game. Randy, what's it like to deal with high school parents? It almost makes you not want to officiate. The lower you go, the worse it is. Like junior high parents standing on the sidelines screaming, and they have no idea what they're talking about. And that's why we have a shortage of officials nationwide. What's the worst it ever got? We got escorted out of a rivalry games parking lot by police. And I think it was like a 32 point game. So I guess we had a big outcome or a big impact on the outcome. The team lost by 32 points, but parents wanted to kill us. Wow. Why did you want to be an official to begin with? It's kind of a bug. I did baseball for about 35 years and I got into football about 25 years ago. And if you do it, it's, it's addictive.
Dan Patrick
It's.
David Pollock
It's a blast that you work with some good guys. The atmosphere is fun and you kind of have to go back to, hey, maybe we're helping you sports a little bit by doing this. Well, you are. And thanks for doing it and thanks for calling in Randy. It's tough. I remember doing little league baseball and then I did Legion ball and I was an umpire. And you would have parents stand right, right on the fence. They'd be yelling Right behind you, the batting cage, batting area. They'd be right there and they would be pressed up against that. They'd be yelling at you and they would be sitting. That's a ball. How can you call that? You know, like it was. I had to run somebody one time and I said, you're out of here. He said, says who? I said, me. And he goes, what are you going to do about it? I said, I'm going to forfeit the game. Go ahead. So I said, all right, I'm going to. And the guy goes, all right, all right, I'll leave. All right, I'll leave. So he goes down first baseline and he's just outside of the fence. And I can still hear him because he didn't. He even said, you're kicking me out of the ballpark, right? I said, yes. And so he just went to the outskirts and was still yelling. And I'm thinking, I'm getting paid like, I don't know, $4 an hour. You know, it's just not worth it. It's not. And having a father who used to yell at officials during my basketball games, I understand it. It's tough, thankless job. And the fact that you have to be escorted by police out of a parking lot. They should not let parents go. They should say, we're going to make the game available for you to watch it after. The kids are usually fine. It's the parents.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, Paulie, I went to youth game a couple months ago and this PA announcer was welcome to blank blank, whatever. Please be courteous to officials, blah, blah, blah. Do not heckle the players. And if you did play professional basketball, then you can tell the refs what they're doing. Please stand up. If you played in the NBA, nobody stands up. And everyone laughed. It was pretty snarky.
David Pollock

Congratulations to CBS Sports and Sony Electronics for their first place wins for innovation in industry at this year's unconventional awards by T Mobile for Business. In a collaboration that was clearly built on breaking new ground, CBS and Sony.
Marvin
Created a first of its kind broadcast for the PGA Championship using a custom.
David Pollock
Built T Mobile Private 5G network to power the live production they deployed a 5G wireless camera system throughout the event. The network's speed combined with Sony's innovative ultra low latency video codec allowed for seamless, high quality footage without disruption. With that innovative approach, CBS gave broadcasters the tools they need to do what they do best, take their coverage to entirely new places.

These innovations will shape the way live.

We'll give you our best and worst of the weekend in a moment. Check out David Pollack College Football on YouTube. Also David's new children's book, the Won't Quit Kid, now available online@bravebooks.com former All American at Georgia, formerly of ESPN's College GameDay. Kind enough to join us again, David. Good to see you. When the final rankings came out, the playoff matchups came out, you thought, what.
Marvin
Is Oregon the number one seed or Georgia? That's the first thing when you saw the finalized bracket was, man, Oregon's got a tough row of ho for a team that was undefeated, that looked like the best team all year long. And you look at their side and if I'm starting to look at teams that I think have the talent to get hot and to win this thing, Ohio State, Tennessee, Texas, all on their side. And so if I'm Oregon, I probably was a little bit frustrated from that. And then obviously the SMU Bama debate being settled, going to smu.
David Pollock
Okay, what did you think about that decision?
Marvin
Well, here's the thing, man, I get a little bit frustrated and I know Bama fans are great fans and they should be great fans. They've had a lot to cheer about. And I do understand how you point to the wins and you say we have better wins than smu, but we also have to point to the losses. And we got to realize that you got two losses to six and six teams and you got beat by 21 to a six and six team. And so while I do understand that they played better competition, got more wins, I also don't understand that they got dominated by a poor team late in the season. They were very up and down throughout the season without a lack of consistency and SMU was really consistent and then lost in a championship game. And the committee also showed us too, the way they ranked people like they, they, they did not hurt anybody for playing in a championship game. They have in years past. This year you could tell Texas didn't get hurt. They still got a huge ranking they still got the three seed overall. So Penn State, same thing. They didn't drop people off the face of the earth because of a conference championship loss.
David Pollock
What would you tweak going into next season, Dan?
Marvin
It makes my head hurt when I see the rankings and then the seedings being different. Like, I just need it to all be one. I don't need all of this numbers stuff. I'm not that bright. I don't want to think that hard. I think the best team should be on the. They should be seated 1 through 12. If we're going to stay at 12 and see them 1 through 12 and then give them the best matchup and the best path going forward. But the seedings with the rankings, um, you know, it's just frustrating. I think everybody would get away with or do away with the preseason stuff probably more and more because we have preconceived notions going into the season that don't turn out to be true with the ranked wins sometimes that were very fraudulent. But also we'll change one other thing, Dan. Like I need more interconference matchups. So I need to get rid of some of these cupcakes. And I need the ACC to play. Every team in the ACC needs to play one team in the SEC. Every team in the ACC needs to play one Team in the Big Ten. Every team in the ACC needs To play one team in the Big 12. So now when we're doing this crossover game and this strength of schedule game and who would beat who game, we have more information and more data points that go into it that can help us make more informed decisions.
David Pollock
I've been suggesting since this format started is if you win your conference, you're in. I'm fine with that. It's like the NCAA Tournament with March Madness. If you win the sec, that doesn't mean you're number one seed. You just get in the tournament, you're going to have a pretty high seed. So Boise State winning its conference or Arizona State winning their conferences, you're in. That doesn't mean you get a first round buy. Let's be fair to everybody. Have Vegas give you their odds. And then once you're in and then we seed you, we have one through 12, and then you have your matchup. So whoever is one, if you have Oregon at one and you have Clemson at 12, that's your first round matchup. Or they get a buy for the first four, you know, see, you know, first four ranked teams, I'm okay with all of that. I don't think it's that difficult to figure this out moving forward.
Marvin
We're going to make everything difficult. That's what, that's what we're going to do. I mean, we even made the head to head difficult. Like, you know, when you're starting to diagnose, you know, Bama, South Carolina, Ole Miss and you're starting to do that game between those three, we were talking and like everybody's banging the drum for South Carolina. They had a great season, Dan, an awesome season. But you lost the both teams. Like that's part of the criteria. The criteria very much stipulates it's head to head and then common opponents, which when you went with Bama and Ole Miss, they had a lot of common opponents and Ole Miss quite honestly fared better against them. But yeah, I think the committee maybe a little more transparency there. I think you would take that too, Dan, wouldn't you?
David Pollock
I would, but college football loves a mess though. David. Yeah, if this was clean, there's no debate like they, they want this to be debated. They're. They're okay with being criticized. We're not allowed to see what goes on in those meetings. So.
Marvin
But at least we're debating, at least we're debating 12. The 12th, the 13th, 14th team versus 4, 5 and 6 and an FSU who was undefeated getting left out. So that makes you feel a heck of a lot better. You're leaving out a team that's. That's going to bang their chest. They got three losses. Like, that's not. We're not feeling sorry for anybody with three losses.
David Pollock
He's David Pollock, the former all American linebacker. Georgia used to be with ESPN's College Game Day. You can see David Pollock College Football on YouTube. How many teams can win the national title?
Marvin
Man, that's a great question. I think I would go with confidently. I would go with four. I think there's four teams that could win it. Actually, I'd go with five because I, and I know people are going to say this to me like Notre Dame's never done anything and they're going to push back. But I just, I like the dominance that I've seen from Notre Dame. I like the attitude. I think they know exactly who they are, which I think there's a lot of teams in here that we don't really know who they are. So the one side I'll go Georgia and Notre Dame. On the other side, again, this is why the bracket's harder. I'll go Oregon. I think Tennessee could win it. I think Ohio State could win it. And I'm not there on Texas just because of their offense, but I think with their defense, with their defense being so elite, I think it'll keep it in it. But their offense has been so, I mean, so strange to have a SARC team that's not great on offense. But I guess that's six. Four up top, two down low.
David Pollock
Okay. Should it be held against Georgia that Carson Beck got injured? And now, now, granted his backup is a five star recruit, but we did this to Florida State. I've already heard from Florida State fans. Oh, yeah, Are you going to penalize Georgia now? It's 12 teams. If it's four, I don't know if Georgia's in like, I don't know how these things would have played out like that. But did the committee penalize Georgia in any way that they may not have their best quarterback going forward?
Marvin
I think the difference between FSU and Georgia to me is Georgia clearly looked better with their backup quarterback. FSU looked like a train wreck on offense. So that's where I would say FSU's defense still looked elite. They still won the ACC. They were still great. Georgia's defense still looked elite. But like, I could, I would argue by watching that game the second half, Georgia's offense went like this as opposed to off a cliff. Cliff with fsu. So I think that probably goes into it as well.
David Pollock
And I know you played defense and watching these games this weekend, like the NFL was violent. It's not as violent as college football. It's just not. I mean, it feels like they let you play a little bit more, you get away. I know they have targeting, but damn that Texas game. I mean, holy smokes, David, that hit.
Marvin
Near the goal line was outstanding too. I mean, like, listen, I don't. We can debate whether that's targeting, Dan. Like it's overtime and you are trying to score inside of my five. I'm taking your lid off. I'm doing whatever is necessary to keep you out of my end zone. But I think the biggest difference when I was in it, man, like the passion and adrenaline and the hatred is a little bit stronger at the college level. When I was in the NFL, I remember being around piles and they're kind of like holding you up. Like, hey, don't get tangled up. Don't get in the pile. I'm like, what? So I think it is, it is definitely a different game. And listen, everybody complained. Dan, when we went to, when we talked about nil and we talked about transfer portal and everybody got upset and I get it. But because of that we have more parity in the game of college football than we've ever had. Nobody's going anymore to sit behind at big time schools and be developed. They're going to get a paycheck and so the talent is spread out more. The dominance of the teams aren't as big as they used to be. And so I think it's even more intense every week and more hatred than some of the rivalries obviously being there every single year.
David Pollock
What if Ohio State loses to Tennessee?
Marvin
Oh boy. You know, it's interesting to hear Kirk on the broadcast the other day talk about, you know, the Ohio State and if they start slow, the fans jumping on top of them and booing and there's just, it's just crazy with the ryan day because 47 and one in the Big Ten. 47 and one, but one in four versus Michigan. And that has just been absolutely his kryptonite and he's had no answer for it. And even Michigan and Dan, it's not hardball because he's gone. Like it's not all those players that got drafted because he's gone. It's not Connor Stallions because he's gone. Like it's, it's running out of things on the other side that continue to beat you. So if I'm an Ohio State fan, I get the frustration. I know he's been great, but yeah, first round loss to Tennessee, which could happen because Tennessee's a really, really good football team. I don't know what the heck it looks like in Columbus.
David Pollock
How rough was the year for Kaylan DeBoer at Alabama?
Marvin
You know, it's interesting because if we're going to be fair, and I always want to be fair, there's so many players that left. Like this is not the same team Nick Saban had from a talent standpoint. Like guys took off left and right once they found out that Nick Saban was leaving and was retiring. So his talent isn't as great as it was. But I think the inconsistencies in the up and down and I think what you thought with Caitlin DeBoer you got was an offensive genius who would score a bunch of points. So to have them score, you know, the second last game of the season against Oklahoma to score three points and get beat by 21, like that's not acceptable. If you're a Bama fan, not going to the playoff is one thing, but losing to Vandy, losing to Oklahoma, penalties, palooza offense not taking off like you should. So I think there's going to be frustration. I think this helps recruiting from a other standpoint because the negative recruiting is going to pile on like crazy. So I definitely don't think he came in. I'm not going to give him an A. I don't think he failed either. But, you know, somewhere in there was a C because it was a kind of a. It's kind of a below average season for Alabama.
David Pollock
He gets one of these.
Dan Patrick
That's.
Marvin
It's one of these.
David Pollock
What seasons?
Marvin
Yeah, maybe two at the very most, too. But yeah, you're. You're right, because this is not Alabama. Like, this is not their standard and who they are. So, yeah, it's not going to be a, a long leash for an Alabama coach that has a lot of talent, a lot of resources in the history of that program.
David Pollock
Good to talk to you as always, David. Thanks for joining us.
Marvin
Appreciate you, Big Dog.
David Pollock
Always love David Pollock, college football. You can see his show on YouTube and a new children's book, the Won't Quit Kid, now available online@brave books.com a couple of phone calls in here. Ryan in Wisconsin. Good morning, Ryan. What's on your mind today?
Dan Patrick
5 11, 190.
David Pollock
Best of the weekend is finding out that CJ Stroud is actually CJ Stroud the fourth, therefore Junior the third. I have no worst of the weekend. College football was outstanding.
Dan Patrick
But I do have a song for you. Now, let's remember Celery Came out of.
David Pollock
Wisconsin, so we're obviously a hotbed for.
Dan Patrick
Musical content, but it's simply called ddc.
David Pollock
So the Dead Dad's Club song. This is Ryan in Wisconsin. We're done with ddc.
Dan Patrick
Marvin Paulie, who's done with ddc? Who's done with ddc?
David Pollock
My man dp. We're done with ddc. Yes.
Dan Patrick
You know me well.
David Pollock
Thank you. Thank you. Ryan didn't know we were needing a DDC song, but we got it. Naughty by nature. Yeah, very naughty. Very naughty by nature. David in Ohio. Hi, David. What's on your mind today, Dan?
Dan Patrick
I do not have a song for you.
David Pollock
Okay, don't worry about that. I got.
Dan Patrick
I got a best of best of the weekend.
David Pollock
I got two.
Marvin
First one, Russell Wilson.
David Pollock
Let's ride against the Browns winning without George Pickens.
Dan Patrick
And I got another somewhat best of the weekend.
David Pollock
Just I want to get your advice here. We're having Christmas at our house this year.
Dan Patrick
First time hosting.
David Pollock
Never done it. I don't know if you had any advice for etiquette and setting up and stuff like that. How Many people are coming over. We got about 15, maybe, maybe 20. You have to be sort of a troubleshooter. Like, always be there for your wife. And you're going to be serving everybody. Like, people are going to go, hey, you ran out of toilet paper. Hey, where is such and such. You always have. You're a lifeguard, and you got to watch the kiddie pool yet, the shallow end and the deep end, and try to have fun, because your wife will say, hey, David, are you going to have fun? I am. Well, you probably won't be. You have to be there. And whatever people need, certainly your wife, I would ask every 30 minutes or so on anything you need, Anything you need. Okay. And always don't disappear. Because when I do my holiday party, I go in the garage with Chad from Traeger, and then I just stay there. And I figure if anybody wants to come outside and it's cold, then, you know, I'll socialize. But most people just do a drive by and go into the house. But make yourself available, have a smile, have patience, and realize that it will eventually come to an end. Okay, I can handle that.
Dan Patrick
Thank you for the life advice.
David Pollock
All right. And hide the good booze. I forgot that one time, come down, my neighbor got a expensive bottle of my scotch. And I go, hey. Bob goes, I hope you didn't mind. I cracked this. And I go, okay. And I was like, damn, that's. That's an expensive bottle. And Bob did a pretty good job on it, so. And I had really nice cigars one time. That's a mistake, too, because people don't even smoke cigars. They go like, are these Cubans? Can I. And I always say, hey, if you don't smoke cigar, now's not time. Start just saying, oh, you just want us not to have your cigars. I go, well, that's true. And I left the good cigars in there. And in. I came down, and all of these cigars looked like they'd had, like, three puffs. And then they're stuffed in the ashtray. It just looked like caskets that were sticking straight up in the ground. And I go, oh, my God. So I learned from that. Hide the good stuff. And if you're gonna have cigars, have cigars that are not your top shelf. Let's take a break here. When we come back, our best and worst of the weekend. Be sure to catch the live edition of the Dan Patrick show, weekdays at 9am Eastern, 6am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app, the flavor.

Marvin
Forward, and for that, T Mobile congratulates.
David Pollock
The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Sean, what were the poll results from hour one and what are the poll results for hour two? Hmm.
Dan Patrick
I'm so glad that you asked.
David Pollock
Let's see.
Dan Patrick
The CFP committee got it right or wrong. College Football Playoff committee, did they get it right or wrong? Right now, 78% of the audience say they got it right.
David Pollock
That's refreshing. Refreshing to see. Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Who had the best weekend? Puka Nakua, the Panthers, Dabo Sweeney or Juan Soto? Juan Soto is running away with that one. After that, though, Dabo in second place.
David Pollock
Okay. All right. Well, we kicked them to the curb beginning of the season and rightfully so. Felt so good. Yeah. It's like you come out of your house and you're not the baddest guy when you come out of your house in your neighborhood, but when you're in your house, you're like, hey, we're going to, we're going to be really good. It's they came out of the acc, they got roughed up, they went back into the ACC and they ended up winning. So all you got to do when your conference and you're in, I just have a problem with the seeding. Once you win and you're in, I think that's when Vegas, because Vegas doesn't have any emotional tie to any of this. They're just being Vegas, saying these are the best teams. And then you should rank them accordingly. Seed them accordingly. Yes.
Marvin
We also have up there, the Minnesota.
David Pollock
Vikings are geniuses or got lucky.
Dan Patrick
Right now, 62% of the audience have them getting lucky.
David Pollock
They did. They got lucky with Sam Darnold. Todd, let's go around the room. You start with your best and worst of the weekend. Best of the weekend.
Dan Patrick
And Marvin gave me an extra push to check this out. Watch the HBO documentary Yacht Rock Friday Night with My Wife.
David Pollock
How good it was?
Marvin
Very good.
Dan Patrick
Loved the.
Marvin
From the font to the interviews.
Dan Patrick
Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, band members from Toto found it very fascinating.
David Pollock
But don't you have a whole new respect for Toto? With Toto's impact on music, which I don't think many people would single out Toto and go wow. They. Michael McDonald. I get Michael McDonald had a true impact on music. Probably still does to a certain degree with what a Fool Believes that song. Yes. Marmon. Yeah.
Dan Patrick
I didn't realize one of the guys.
Marvin
From Toto wrote a top five Michael Jackson song. Yes.
Dan Patrick
In Human Nature.
David Pollock
Yes. Like, huh?
Dan Patrick
Oh, man, that's a great song.
Marvin
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
That's easily in my top five. Michael Jackson.
David Pollock
You come away with a whole different perspective of Toto and. And I never thought that I would be like, you know, toto, tell them that.
Dan Patrick
Human nature.
David Pollock
Yes, Todd.
Dan Patrick
I did like that they were being made fun of. They had never been to Africa, and.
Marvin
They'Re talking about the Serengeti and different parts of Africa.
Dan Patrick
And one of the guys they interviewed.
Marvin
Was like, these guys never been there in their life. They're just randomly picking out words and.
Dan Patrick
Phrases that have to do with Africa.
David Pollock
There was an African American music critic. He had a real problem with that video. A real problem. He's like, white guy's never been there. And I don't like the video.
Marvin
Music video was cringe.
David Pollock
I know, but Michael McDonald is the Michael Jordan of yacht rock. I think we could all say that. Yes, Todd.
Marvin
And he was very unassuming.
Dan Patrick
Listening to him and Christopher Cross and these guys, they were like almost surprised with their fame. They didn't have any kind of ego.
Marvin
Or attitude at all.
Dan Patrick
They were just happy to be along for the ride.
David Pollock
During that period of years, any negative and your worst of the weekend.
Dan Patrick
My worst of the weekend was Iowa State losing by 26 to the Sun Devils in the Big 12 title game.
Marvin
Made me wonder how BYU or Colorado.
Dan Patrick
Would have fail in a more competitive.
David Pollock
Big 12 title game. Seat no counter. Best and worst of the weekend, Michael McDonald.
Dan Patrick
Not coming away from that thing with an ego is a bit of a shock. My best of the weekend. To me, the clear winners are the Chiefs.
David Pollock
They just keep sneaking by, squeezing by.
Dan Patrick
All of these games. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing or if it's eventually going to catch up to them, but it sure hasn't yet. To me, the worst of the weekend is the Bills. They just. They're allowing home field advantage and handing it right to the Chiefs, and they absolutely cannot do that.
David Pollock
It's weird that I feel if I'm a Chiefs fan, better that we're squeaking by, because that's what the playoffs is all about. You can blow out teams and then I always wonder, what are you going to be like when the game's on the line? And you have to win. You have to do something under pressure. Kansas City has mastered that. Marvin. Best and worst of the weekend.
Marvin
Best of the weekend, Arizona State running back Cam Scatterbo.
David Pollock
Man, how, how good is he?
Marvin
So good.
David Pollock
Watch that game. I was like, I don't know who this is.
Marvin
I really didn't watch much of him.
David Pollock
I should have. Sixteen carries, 170 yards, two touchdowns. Nobody wanted to tackle. Even if you wanted to tackle, you couldn't tackle this dude.
Marvin
A lot of business decisions.
David Pollock
He ran hard and you're going, this guy. And then he did a Heisman pose. I'm like, okay, you know, great season. I don't know if I could give you Heisman votes.
Dan Patrick
Yep.
David Pollock
Worst of the weekend, SOFI Stadium.
Dan Patrick
The Rams easily worst home field advantage in the NFL.
David Pollock
Every single game that the Rams play.
Marvin
At home, it feels like at best.
David Pollock
A neutral site game. Yeah. It's like you're playing at a mall. Yeah. I don't know. You're right. I don't think that's a true home field advantage. Paul. Best and worst of the weekend, the.
Dan Patrick
12 team playoff bracket in college football. It's fantastic because this might be a one year anomaly where teams got in that maybe wouldn't get there normally. The past 10 years, it was always Ohio State, Georgia, Bama Repeat, and occasionally a Cincinnati would show up. You've got smu, you've got Indiana, you got Arizona State and Boise. It's fun, it feels NCAA tournament ish and hopefully it lasts. Worst of the weekend, the Chicago Bears. No showing against the 49ers. You got rid of your offensive coordinator. The players wanted. You got rid of your head coach last week at the players wanted and you know, show against the Niners. You can't blame Matt Everfluous this weekend. He wasn't there.
David Pollock
Jared in Georgia. Hi, Jared. What's on your mind?
Marvin
Adp, I want to switch gears a little bit here.
David Pollock
Got a question for you.
Marvin
With the NBA being so unwatchable nowadays.
David Pollock
Where they shoot 5,000 threes a game.
Marvin
How long do you think before they try to change the way they play to make it more watchable?
David Pollock
I don't know. I mean, I'd love to have the commissioner on again. We usually have him once a year. Is he okay with this? That's what I'd be curious. Is he okay with the product that's being put out there? Because he may say, hey, I like what we're doing. A lot of positives. You got the NBA Cup. I mean, he may say, this is great.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, Paul, I think it's the easiest fix and we've talked about it before, but really just remove the three point line. You open up the entire court. Guys will still shoot from that distance because they're conditioned to it. But you don't make it the focal point of the game anymore. Remove the three point line, fans would love it and it would change the entire game for next 20 years.
David Pollock
Yeah, but you're bringing people in that are special and they specialize in this. Like you drafted people, they specialize in this. That's the hard part is all of a sudden I'm going to say this is going to be counterintuitive to what you built your team around. And I think that's the what I like to see them play a week of basketball with no three point line. Yes, I would. I'd like to see if the game is better and I believe it would be. More phone calls coming up. Best and worst of the weekend. 8773 DP show operator Tyler sitting by to take your phone calls. Two hours in the books on this Monday. Final hour on the way after this.

The Dan Patrick Show: Hour 2 – Chiefs Are Great at Winning, David Pollack
Release Date: December 9, 2024
Hosted by iHeartPodcasts and the Dan Patrick Podcast Network, this episode of The Dan Patrick Show delves deep into the intricate dynamics of both professional and college football, offering listeners insightful analysis, engaging discussions, and a dose of humor. Featuring special contributions from former Georgia All-American David Pollock, the show navigates through player contracts, team performances, playoff selections, and broader sports concerns.
Chiefs’ Strategic Mastery:
Dan Patrick and David Pollock kick off their discussion by highlighting the Kansas City Chiefs' exceptional ability to win close games. Pollock remarks on their consistent performance in high-pressure situations:
David Pollock [06:14]: “Nothing fancy about it. It's just Mahomes has this ability to make a subtle move when he feels pressure.”
Pollock emphasizes Mahomes' knack for strategic plays under duress, contributing to the Chiefs' reputation for maintaining composure and securing victories in tight matches.
Juan Soto’s Monumental Contract:
A significant portion of the conversation centers around Juan Soto’s groundbreaking $765 million contract with the New York Mets. Pollock speculates on the future of such contracts in sports:
David Pollock [03:56]: "What's it going to be like? So when this contract is up By Juan Soto, 20:40 Guys are going to get a billion."
The hosts discuss the implications of escalating player salaries, predicting that by 2040, top athletes, particularly in basketball and football, may command contracts worth a billion dollars. This segment underscores the shifting financial landscapes in professional sports.
Quarterback Performances:
The discussion shifts to the performances of key quarterbacks across the NFL. Pollock provides a comparative analysis of quarterbacks like Josh Allen, Justin Herbert, and Patrick Mahomes, highlighting their strengths and the defenses they face:
David Pollock [06:25]: “They seize that moment. They embrace that moment. They love that moment.”
This section underscores the importance of having a reliable quarterback who can perform under pressure, a trait exemplified by Mahomes and essential for teams aiming for playoff success.
Defensive Strategies and Game Outcomes:
Pollock and Patrick explore how defenses impact game outcomes, particularly in one-score games, a trend they note has been setting records in the NFL. The conversation touches on how the Chiefs’ defense keeps games competitive:
David Pollock [06:14]: “But this Kansas City defense is good and they keep you in the game.”
This segment highlights the Chiefs' ability to maintain competitive matches, contributing to their consistent success.
Playoff Committee’s Decision-Making:
A significant portion of the episode is dedicated to dissecting the College Football Playoff (CFP) committee’s selections. Pollock expresses frustration with the current seeding and ranking system, advocating for more transparency and interconference matchups:
Marvin [25:08]: “It makes my head hurt when I see the rankings and then the seedings being different.”
The hosts argue for a system where conference champions are automatically included, similar to the NCAA Tournament, to streamline team selections and reduce controversies.
Potential National Title Contenders:
Pollock identifies multiple teams with the potential to win the national title, including Georgia, Notre Dame, Oregon, Tennessee, and Ohio State, emphasizing the increased parity in college football:
Marvin [28:30]: “I think there's four teams that could win it. Actually, I'd go with five... Georgia and Notre Dame. On the other side, again, this is why the bracket's harder.”
This analysis reflects the evolving competitiveness in college football, where talent distribution has become more balanced, allowing a wider array of teams to vie for the championship.
Alabama’s Season Analysis:
The discussion turns to Alabama’s performance under new coach Kaylan DeBoer. Pollock critiques the team’s offensive inconsistencies and defensive prowess:
Marvin [33:14]: “If we're going to be fair... this is a below average season for Alabama.”
They explore the challenges faced by the team, including player departures and coaching adjustments, which have impacted their seasonal performance and future recruiting prospects.
Ohio State’s Struggles and Potential Upsets:
Pollock addresses Ohio State’s potential vulnerabilities, particularly against strong opponents like Tennessee, and the implications of losing key matches on their playoff aspirations:
Marvin [32:15]: “If Ohio State loses to Tennessee? Oh boy.”
This highlights the high stakes and unpredictable nature of college football, where even top-ranked teams can face unexpected hurdles.
Holiday Hosting Tips:
A listener named David seeks advice on hosting a first-time Christmas party. Pollock offers practical tips on etiquette, troubleshooting, and maintaining a positive atmosphere:
David Pollock [36:24]: “Always be there for your wife... have patience, and realize that it will eventually come to an end.”
This segment adds a personal touch to the show, showcasing the hosts’ ability to provide valuable life advice beyond sports.
Officiating Challenges in High School Sports:
Randy from Idaho shares his experiences as a high school football official, discussing the pressures from parents and the challenges faced on the field:
David Pollock [12:50]: “They should say, we're going to make the game available for you to watch it after. The kids are usually fine.”
Pollock empathizes with Randy’s frustrations, shedding light on the often-overlooked pressures faced by officials in youth sports.
NBA’s Three-Point Overload:
The hosts critique the NBA’s heavy reliance on three-point shots, suggesting a potential overhaul to make the game more watchable. Patrick proposes removing the three-point line to alter the game’s dynamics:
Dan Patrick [49:07]: “Really just remove the three point line. You open up the entire court.”
Pollock contemplates the implications of such a change, emphasizing the challenge of adapting teams built around three-point shooters:
David Pollock [49:24]: “You drafted people, they specialize in this. That's the hard part.”
This debate underscores the tension between evolving game strategies and maintaining the sport’s traditional appeal.
Best of the Weekend:
Arizona State’s Cam Scatterbo:
Pollock lauds Cam Scatterbo’s outstanding performance, noting his dominance on the field:
Marvin [46:56]: “How good is he? So good.”
David Pollock [47:02]: “Sixteen carries, 170 yards, two touchdowns. Nobody wanted to tackle. Even if you wanted to tackle, you couldn't tackle this dude.”
Kansas City Chiefs:
The Chiefs are celebrated for their consistent yet sneaky victories in close games:
David Pollock [46:15]: “They just keep sneaking by, squeezing by.”
Worst of the Weekend:
Miami Dolphins at SOFI Stadium:
The Rams' inability to capitalize on home-field advantage is criticized:
Dan Patrick [47:30]: “The Rams easily worst home field advantage in the NFL.”
Iowa State’s Loss to Sun Devils:
Pollock expresses disappointment over Iowa State’s substantial loss in the Big 12 title game:
Dan Patrick [45:51]: “My worst of the weekend was Iowa State losing by 26 to the Sun Devils in the Big 12 title game.”
Yacht Rock Documentary Review:
The hosts discuss an HBO documentary on Yacht Rock, specifically highlighting Toto’s contributions to music and their cultural impact:
Dan Patrick [44:16]: “Loved the... Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, band members from Toto found it very fascinating.”
David Pollock [44:22]: “You come away with a whole different perspective of Toto.”
This segment bridges sports with pop culture, providing listeners with a well-rounded entertainment experience.
Future of Player Salaries and Team Strategies:
Pollock and Patrick speculate on the future trajectories of player salaries and team strategies, considering the rising costs of contracts and the evolving nature of sports management:
David Pollock [06:25]: “But basketball, the NBA, it just do the math. And I still think Shay Gilgis, Alexander or Luka Doncic are going to be the first 100 million dollar a year basketball players.”
Playoff Predictions and Team Performance:
The duo wraps up with predictions for the upcoming playoffs, emphasizing the Chiefs’ unparalleled ability to perform under pressure and secure victories:
Dan Patrick [46:03]: “My best of the weekend to me, the clear winners are the Chiefs.”
David Pollock [46:15]: “It's weird that I feel if I'm a Chiefs fan, better that we're squeaking by, because that's what the playoffs is all about.”
Throughout the episode, The Dan Patrick Show maintains a balance between in-depth sports analysis and relatable discussions, making it a valuable listen for both avid sports fans and casual listeners seeking engaging content.
