Have you ever looked at a piece of abstract art or music or poetry and thought that's just a bunch of pretentious nonsense? That's exactly what two bored Australian soldiers set out to prove during World War II when they tricked the literary world with their intentionally bad poetry, setting off a major scandal. We break down the truth, the lies, and the poetry in between on Hoax, a new podcast hosted by me, Lizzy Logan, and me, Dana Schwartz. Every episode, Hoax explores an audacious fraud or ruse from history. Listen to Hoax on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Game with Sarah Spain on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Brought to you by Novartis, founding partner of iHeart Women's Sports Network. You are listening to the Dan Patrick show on Fox Sports Radio, hour two on this Monday to be back from vacation. And we are fully assembled. We got the minister of humor, Fritzi Seaton, Marv, Paulie, yours truly, and the BRGs, the back room guys. A lot of fun. Spent a lot of time fishing, by the way, and, and catching. You know, you go out and you're fishing. I caught a few largemouth bass, caught a pike and sent the pictures to the Danets. Been pretty proud of it. Now it's catch and release, you know, so I'm not gonna like mount those on a wall or anything in the man cave, but did think about it. Now I just kind of put on a. Put on a display is what I did. Yeah.
Paulie
Paulie, are any of them Mount worthy? Are they. Is there a certain size that's Mount worthy?
Dan Patrick
I'm not a mount guy. I, you know, when you, you go into somebody's house and they got like, there's a deer there and a bear and you know, you're. There's a rug and it's a leopard rug. I'm not into that. But I don't know what is a Mount Worthy fish that you catch. I don't know if there's a certain size where you go, well, I can put that on the wall there. Yes, yes. Eaton.
Seton
What if you caught the fish with your bare hands instead of a hook? Then would you want to mount it? Because that's a hell of an accomplishment.
Dan Patrick
I did catch them with my bear. Oh, yeah? Yeah. Just went into the lake and wrestled them. Yeah, that's right. I got them. Yeah, there were a few that got away. Yes. Todd.
Todd
So you don't have a local taxidermist on retainer, just in these situations, you had to quickly get something mounted?
Dan Patrick
No, no, I'm not into that. I just catch and release. But out there on the lake and spent some time with my brothers. Got everybody together and had a good time. Yes.
Paulie
Paulie, what about keeping the fish for cooking or a fire eating? People always say, that's good eating that type of fish. Is there a certain one that you may keep and not release?
Dan Patrick
Nope, I release them all when I go to Montana and go, you know, trout fishing and catch and release and same Thing up here. Catch and release and. But it's fun. It's fun going out there. Now, here's the problem. I do have a pontoon boat, and I'm taking my brothers to dinner. We ran out of gas in the middle of the lake, and I have to call my friend. My friend who runs the marina. I say, zach, I ran out of gas. He goes, I'll be there. Oh, dear. So he. I mean, this is the ultimate embarrassment where you run out of gas, because I'm looking at the gas gauge, and I go, all right, I got. I think I got enough to get. You know, it's a couple of miles to get to the restaurant. Ran out. It was one of those where you go. And then my brother started laughing. And so my friend Zach had to come out and rescue me and towed me in, and we got some gas, and then we. We forgot all about it until the next day when I actually was piloting the pontoon boat, and I hit a rock, and all of a sudden, I was stranded again. So I called my friend Zach and I said, hey, Zach, because what happened this time? I said, well, I hit a rock. All right, I'll be there. I came out, got me all set up. Now I need a new propeller on my pontoon boat. So then I text him yesterday, and I said, hey, I've broken down emotionally. Can you come and pick me up? And he said, I'll be there. Yes.
Seton
I have a lot of questions right now.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Seton
What was the conversation like between you and your brothers leading up to that excursion on the boat? Were you talking about, like, you know, I got a boat now, so I know these waters kind of thing? Were you a very confident captain of this pontoon boat, or were you more unsure of, like, yeah, yeah, we'll see how it goes?
Dan Patrick
No, I was pretty confident I had my captain's hat on, too.
Todd
No, no, no, no.
Dan Patrick
Hold on.
Paulie
Stop, stop. We're going to need a photo that.
Dan Patrick
I dubbed my youngest brother. My. My first mate. And, oh, yeah, I was pretty confident there. And then when we're out and I'm. I'm. You know, it's. It's a large lake. There's a lot of rocks, you know, in certain areas. And I was like, I don't know, there's no buoys here. I should be able to pilot this right through this. All of a sudden, I held my breath because I thought, if I make it through here, we're good. And I hear this.
Seton
Yeah, see, there's a fella who works for the show named Anthony, who goes up to Maine with you typically, like, when you do the show like you are now?
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Seton
Does he normally take care of these issues and wasn't with you and that's why this was a thing? Does he do these types of things happen often and he covers up for you? What are these? Just anomalies. They just so happen to have, like, you had one weird week.
Dan Patrick
This just happened. He wasn't here. And I was up with my brothers. And, you know, once again, I'm. I'm dominating fishing. I'm crushing my brothers, which is the most important thing. And then I thought, I'll treat them to dinner. How about we get on my pontoon boat, you guys sit back, and I'm gonna pilot this and take you over to the restaurant? And then we ran out of gas. Gas, Paulie.
Paulie
So I know very little about boats. You know more than I do about boats. Because you have one. You can't carry a spare gas can on a boat or can you?
Dan Patrick
Well, if you have a gas can, you probably should have put the gas in the gas can and then filled it up prior to leaving.
Paulie
Right.
Dan Patrick
I thought that I could get across the lake, which is about eight miles long, and I thought, all right. And I looked at the gas gauge and I. I made a terrible mistake. But everybody survived. And once again, my thanks to my buddy Zach, who helped me not once but twice. Yes. Yes.
Todd
Todd, can you order delivery from a stranded boat in the middle of a lake where they'll come in their boat and come bring you the food?
Dan Patrick
I don't know if Uber eats does that, but I will check on that. I told my brothers to place their order at the restaurant while we were sitting in the middle of a lake, and. But once again, you know, it happens. It happens to the best of them. Us. I mean, we survived. But more importantly, man, did I dominate when I was fishing. Are we going to show any of these pictures if they're watching on Peacock? I sent you guys, you know, the fish that I caught. Oh, okay. Yeah, somehow we're not going to show that. Hey, Tours. Yeah. You guys are on my team. Fish jealousy. What? Yeah. Yeah, it feels like. Oh, we can make fun of Dan, but we're not gonna. I mean, I kind of catch fish like that in my sleep, so I didn't really think. All right, best and worst of the weekend. What you saw that you liked, you didn't like. We'll talk some college football. Coming up. Ross Dellinger from Yahoo Sports on maybe expanding to 28 teams. Playoff teams. Also the Michigan situation as well. 8773 DP show. Good morning. If you're watching on Peacock, download the app if you haven't done so. Our great partners there and we say good morning to our radio affiliates. All right, let's clean up the poll question from our 1. Seton and would be, what are we going to go with an hour to.
Seton
Well, we got up there right now putting Scotty Scheffler in the air quotes. Tiger woods discussion is appropriate or too soon.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Seton
Right now, 60% of the audience are saying too soon.
Dan Patrick
Okay, that's fine. That's fine. It's just he hasn't taken over the sport in the. You know, Tiger had his way of dominating, whereas Scotty's is just very, very subtle. And you know, Tiger, it just feels like he's not only going to win, but he's going to embarrass you along the way. Scotty is just, you know, here it is. This is what I do. There's a chip, there's a putt. That's a good drive. Thank you. Drive home safely. Yeah, Paul.
Paulie
It's their style of stardom that's most different. They came in completely different. Tiger was a household name at 19 years old with expectations about his launch on the World. Nike signatures, all that stuff. Scheffler eased in. He had a great amateur career. I read all about it.
Todd
But it's.
Paulie
He didn't walk in as a superstar. He didn't want to.
Todd
Would those poll results be a bit different if he had a more engaging personality or. It's got nothing to do with that. It's strictly just what he's accomplished so far compared to Tiger's dominance.
Dan Patrick
Well, I don't know. For me, I think it's the presentation. Sometimes we'll look at a basketball player and say, man, that guy is awesome. But he's awesome because he creates highlights. It doesn't mean that he's a great basketball player, you know, playing both ends, playing an entire game, but he does. You know, you can be fooled sometimes when you're watching SportsCenter, where you go, man, that guy, he's really good. Oh, you didn't see his other three at bats or you didn't see him playing the field. Scheffler doesn't do anything that you don't feel like you. You can't do. Tiger, it felt like you can't do those things. And now we can't do what Scotty does. But he doesn't do something where you go, man, he just hit it 340 or, you know, aside from that Chip yesterday, like, how many signature moments has he really had? Doesn't feel like there's that many where you go, oh, my gosh, I remember that. Tiger had a lot of. I remember that. And Scotty yesterday. That's. That's one of those. But he's only had a handful that you remember. All right, Seaton, what's. Poll question for hour two.
Seton
Let's see, we have one here from Paul. That is, who's more dominant in their sport, Shohei or Scotty or other. We'll throw another there as well. I have another one, too, from vacation that I could throw out there. This doesn't necessarily apply to you, Dan, although it could in many other times.
Dan Patrick
Mm.
Seton
This was sent in via email. Do you recline in airplane seats? Yes or no? It's a very controversial topic. Do you recline in airplane seats when you're sitting in your seat in the airport in an airplane, do you hit the button and recline back?
Dan Patrick
Okay, I do have halfway.
Seton
That would be a yes. I think that counts as a yes.
Dan Patrick
Yes. Yes. Ish. Yeah. I don't go all the way back because I know how it feels if somebody does that where I'm trying to get, you know, my tall frame in there. It's just a little.
Seton
To take the edge off a little.
Dan Patrick
Just, Just.
Seton
Just a knockback.
Dan Patrick
Now, if you're in first class, then, you know, you can do whatever you want, you know, as far as, you know, moving the seat back. But if you're in coach. Coach, then just a little bit. Yes.
Todd
Tony, why don't they make the airplane seat so I can only go halfway back? That you pull it so it doesn't go so far where anyone behind you would be uncomfortable by it or the person in front of you is doing it. Now it's forcing you to go that much.
Dan Patrick
Do you do it?
Todd
I don't.
Dan Patrick
Do you do it? Okay. You don't?
Todd
Never. I rarely do it. I just. I end up. I'll sit straight up and I'll watch what other people are watching across the aisle and not use the headset or watch my own programming.
Dan Patrick
All right. What about you, Seaton?
Seton
I have for sure. I don't always, but sometimes I'm like, forget it. I'm just knocking this thing back. Don't care.
Dan Patrick
Always. Okay, Paul?
Paulie
I look back if there's no one behind me, full recline. If there's someone behind me. Not at all.
Dan Patrick
Ever. Yeah. Okay.
Seton
I mean, if you weren't supporting, they wouldn't make them to do it right.
Dan Patrick
That, that is true. They, they. But it does feel like there's times when they'll have their seat back and all of a sudden your drink is in your lap or, you know, it's. It's a little bit tighter than it needs to be. But I'm going to blame the airlines, not necessarily the person in front of me when they do that. Let me get to Gus in la. Hi, Gus. Best and worst of the weekend.
Gus
Good morning, Mr. Patrick. Hope you and the boys had a great week. All right, let's get into this. You know, you gotta love a sport like baseball where one week you get swept by a team that is statistically eliminated from the playoffs already, only to come around and sweep a team that is beating you in the division. I mean, truly a 180 of events I did not expect to sweep. I was just praying just for us to win the series, not to sweep it alone. But hey, wins a win and, you know, this could be turning the season around for us. You know, we got people coming back off injured list, so hopefully that's good. Kind of like this is like the worst of the weekend. I was gonna bring this up last week, but, you know, you boys rough. The Cam Little, the Jaguars kicker that nailed a 70 yard field goal, this is not being recognized as an NFL record because it was preseason. Now I get that preseason, you know, everybody plays like a series or two, whatever. But to me, I feel that this is a significant achievement because he nailed a 70 yard field goal with room to spare and he beat the record by 4 yards. Now they don't make the field small, you know, shorter the field goal, like, you know, bigger, nothing like that. Why isn't this being recognized if his cleats and jersey are going to the hall of Fame? You boys have a great week. Welcome back.
Dan Patrick
Thank you. Thank you, Gus. I wouldn't have his cleats and jersey go to the hall of Fame. They might not have tried this 70 yard field goal if it was the regular season. But you've had guys who have kicked, you know, field goals, you know, mid-60s, upper-60s. It's just a question of if your coach is going to allow you to do it because the potential for getting a field goal blocked from 70 yards, 65 yards is greatly enhanced just because you're going to have to, you know, hit a line drive basically to get it going. But no, it was very impressive and room to spare, I think. You know, let's see if they have a end of the half type situation this year where you bring him in. That'd be great. Then you can send his jersey and his cleats to the Pro Football hall of Fame.
Gus
But.
Dan Patrick
But we can't start looking at what you did in, you know, a preseason game and all of a sudden those count. It's great. If you hit a home run in batting practice and you hit it out of the ballpark, they don't take your bat and take it to Cooperstown. All right, we'll take a break. We'll talk some college football. Coming up next, more of your phone calls as well on this Monday, best and worst of the weekend. Attention passengers, the pilot is having an emergency and we need someone, anyone to land this plane.

In 1920, a magazine article announced something incredible. Two young girls had photographed real fairies. But even more extraordinary than the magazine articles claim was the identity of the man who wrote the article. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The man who wrote Sherlock Holmes. Yes, the man who invented literature's most brilliant detective was fooled by two girls into thinking fairies were real. How did they do it? And why does it seem like so many smart people keep falling for outlandish tricks? These are the questions we explore in Hoax, a new podcast from me, Dana Schwartz, the host of Noble Blood, and me, Lizzy Logan. Every episode we'll explore one of the most audacious and ambitious tricks in history, from the fake Shakespeares to balloon boys, and try to answer the question of why we believe what we believe. Listen to hoax on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.
Dan Patrick
We will give you our best and worst of the weekend coming up in 20 minutes. 877-3-DP show spent a little bit of time in the first hour of the program talking about the penalties levied against Michigan. We'll talk to Ross Dellinger of Yahoo. Sports about that. Also the possibility of a 24 or 28 team college football playoff that the Big Ten is proposing. Let's bring in Ross, who joins us now. How would you summarize the NCAA's punishment of Michigan football?
Ross Dellinger
Oh, it's a good question, Dan. I would summarize it as.
Dan Patrick
You know.
Ross Dellinger
I guess it depends on who you ask, Dan. You know, if you ask Michigan people, right, they say it was too hard and the penalties financially are too, are too stiff. And that's probably a point of why they're appealing, right? If you ask everybody else in college football and college sports, they'll say it was way, way too light, right? At the NCAA should have given Michigan a postseason ban and they should have vacated wins in championships and they should have added more suspension and penalties to the, the current head football coach, Sharon Moore. I think what the NCAA did and they're starting to move away from the vacated wins, right? They're starting to move away from postseason bands because it penalizes sort of innocent players that are currently on the team in future players that will be on the team. So they're kind of moving away from that. So they're just substituting these financial penalties, you know, for the postseason ban. And if you look at the, the full penalties, accumulative penalties, financial penalties, it's, it's going to be over $30 million and probably as much as 35, $37 million. I mean, that is a historic penalty that we've, you Just never seen anything like it. And I know it's easy to sort of roll your eyes at. They have a lot of money and they can pay it. We're in an age of athlete compensation where they're going to be, everybody's going to be paying, you know, $20 million to their athletes starting this year. So I don't think it's anything necessarily to roll, roll, roll the eyes at. I think it was a pretty significant penalty, but it's probably not what most people believed that they deserved. And I think, and I'll say one more thing about that, Dan, is that if the NCAA, which was tipped off in October 2023, in the middle of that season, that 2023 season was tipped off to this, this science dealing took a few days to start to really vet it, realized it was real and then alerted the Big Ten who then suspended Jim Harbaugh those three games. If, Dan, if that doesn't happen and they don't suspend and the Big Ten doesn't decide to suspend Jim Harbaugh, the NCAA doesn't alert the Big Ten to this. Michigan probably does get vacated wins and maybe even gets a postseason ban.
Dan Patrick
Wait, explain why.
Ross Dellinger
I think the fact that you sort of dealt with it immediately during that season. I think there's a thought that the three games that the head coach was suspended in, in. You remember he was suspended, I think two or three games earlier that season, two for a separate investigation. The fact that you. They immediately took action, you know, and I think Charlie Baker said this after they won the championship, is that you can't argue that they want it sort of fair and square, something like that. And in part of the reason he said that is because of that three game suspension for Jim Harbaugh. It's like we dealt with it then, right? We dealt with it there and I think they took that, the committee on Infractions took that under consideration. And if that wouldn't have happened, I, I just have a belief that, that that championship would have been in jeopardy of being vacated.
Dan Patrick
If I asked Jim Harbaugh, did you cheat or not? Him, if I ask him, did Michigan cheat, what do you think his answer would be? If I just said yes or no, did Michigan cheat?
Ross Dellinger
I can't imagine Jim Harbaugh acknowledging in any way that, that the University of Michigan cheated or that he cheated or that anybody on his staff cheated. You know, Michigan as well as Jim Harbaugh, I'm sure continues to contend that they really received not much of a, of a advantage from assigned stealing. And the Advanced scouting and that it shouldn't have been illegal and that it should, it should be legal to go scout your opponents. And many times Michigan administrators and coaches have come to me and said, look, you know, years ago this, this, this rule was almost changed to permit schools to do it, but it's sort of a cost containment issue. And so they continue to contend that they, they didn't get any advantage. And again, everybody else writing college sports will tell you they did get an advantage. And I think the committee on infractions thought they did get an advantage. And if we were in any other era, Dan, before this sort of rev share type of era, Michigan would have received a postseason ban almost certainly and they would have had scholarship reductions. But this is sort of a new world. And so they decided not to do that and go instead with the financial penalties.
Dan Patrick
Okay, Jim Harbaugh has a 10 year show cause, which means he can't come back and coach in college. Correct. If it's. Now, that seems like a really harsh punishment for him if he goes back, but he's not going back. My question though would be, if he was still there, what would his punishment be if this is his punishment and he's not there? Ross? Yeah.
Ross Dellinger
Norman Bay, who is the, the chief, he was like the chairman, I think, of the committee on infractions. He gave a press conference last week after the ruling and he was asked exactly that. Basically he was asked what would have happened if Jim Harbaugh was still the head coach, what would the penalties have been? And there was like, literally, Dan, there was like an 8 second pause and he just stared at the camera and you could see the wheels turning like, oh boy, what do I say here? Finally, he really sort of danced around the question of, you know, we, it's a hypothetical, we're not going to get into that. But fairly clearly the penalties would have been a lot more severe if Jim Harbaugh was Michigan's coach. There's no doubt about it that it would have been a lot more severe. I mean, I say that they have sort of stopped doing the postseason ban, but if Michigan, if Jim Harbaugh was still coach of Michigan, you know, if it wasn't going to be, if there wasn't going to be a postseason ban, there was going to be some kind of like season worth of suspensions for him.
Dan Patrick
Talking to Ross Dellinger, Yahoo. Sports Senior college football reporter, I saw the story floated by the Big Ten or the Big Ten has an idea for playoff expansion, 24 or 28 teams, and we're looking at the Big Ten and the SEC that they would get half the field and then you would have the ACC and Big 12, they get five bids and then you would have two automatic bids for the non power four conferences and two at large teams. So that escalated quickly. That were at least we're talking about this now. We're, I know we're headed towards this. Why? How long is it going to take to get there?
Ross Dellinger
I think it's still going to take long and I think this idea is just, was just an idea and is, is just an idea, right? It was. Somebody kind of described it to me. I thought it was pretty accurate back of the napkin stuff like this. It really is like this is very, very preliminary. So this was a, we're a week, a week ago. So last Monday I think or last Tuesday the Big Ten had a meeting with us its athletic administrators and kind of just sort of presented this hey, what do you think? And everybody sort of gave it the thumbs up right. And then they sent it to the SEC last middle last week, early last week. And there was a preliminary the first call between Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti and SEC commissioner Greg Sankey Friday about it and it was just sort of a going through it. What do we think of this? It, you know, it. I think the Big Ten is sort of like trying to get a feel for where the SEC is and there's really been no answer there from the sec. But this week there could be some kind of answer. The SEC athletic directors meet for a regularly scheduled meeting this week and so I'm guessing it will come up. But Dan, this is so preliminary. Like it's, it's. When I heard about it Thursday, I decided that I wouldn't write about it because it was so preliminary. ESPN did write about it on Saturday, which forced all of us to, to write about it. But I went to somebody who was very involved in the process about like hey, I'm writing something. They're like there's nothing to write. This is a non story. It's just starting. We haven't even gotten to the first step of it. And they are right. I mean this is very preliminary. So I think we're still a ways away. But Dan, I think we always knew when we went college when college football went from 2 to 4 and certainly when it went from 4 to 12, we knew this was inevitably it was going to go to at least 16. And so I think that's still where the focus is, is trying to get this thing to 16. But there's a deadline December 1st where they have to make a decision on next year's playoff. Obviously this year's is 12 and that's all set. We're trying to decide on next year and in the pre and then the next five years. Right. The new, the new kind of six year extension that starts next year. So they have till December 1. I have a feeling next year's playoff will be where it is this year. It certainly will not be 24, 28 teams. Right. This is not happening within a year.
Dan Patrick
Great to talk to you. Thanks for joining us. No problem.
Seton
Thank you.
Dan Patrick
ROSS Dellinger Yahoo. Sports SENIOR COLLEGE FOOTBALL WRITER yeah, it's one of those things where this story comes out and then your bosses say, why aren't we covering this? Well, I'm told that it's not a story. Well, ESPN's reporting it. Okay. But still it's not a story. All right. We still have to cover it. And then all of a sudden you're, you're adding credence credibility to the ESPN report of 24 to 28. I just think we need to slow down. But everybody realizes how much money is there and all of these leagues have expansion. Nobody's reducing, they're adding, baseball's talking about adding teams. Baseball is talking about realignment and they're trying to cut down on the travel, the wear and tear. You might, you might see the Mets and the Yankees and the Red Sox and the Phillies all in the same division that they would have realignment. True territorial. And it would be, it's not American League, National League, you know. And once again, this is in the preliminary stages by commissioner Rob Manfred, but you might see that and maybe expansion, that maybe two to four cities would get expansion teams. Yeah.
Paulie
Pauline, it's funny, I hadn't heard this yet and when you brought it up, I was like, I kind of like it. I like teams as physically close as possible. For fans to go to other cities and see games, that would be a big benefit for the in game experience, I think.
Dan Patrick
But once again, if you had the Mets and the Yankees in the same division, then you had the Phillies in there as well. You know, once again, territorial here. Red Sox would be in this as well. Yes.
Seton
Eden, I am a massive fan of geographical rivalries. To me, it's like what makes sports so great is that you're always trying to be like, it goes right back to high school. You're trying to beat the next town over and then you're trying to beat the town. All of the towns that are adjacent to you, those are the ones you want to beat the most. I, I'm a, I'm a huge fan of that.
Dan Patrick
How about we do our best and worst of the weekend? Let me get to Michael in Florida. Hey, Mike, thanks for holding. What do you have for me today?
Gus
Hey, Dan. What's up? Long time. 6, 3, 20. Okay. I am upset, and what I wanted to discuss is the sense of entitlement that the Big Ten commissioner and the SEC commissioner come with these automatic bids. What happened with just playing on the field and doing the, you know, top 12 like you're going to have? We only have a top 25 teams, so to even say you're going to go to 28, how does that make sense?
Dan Patrick
I always, I, as I've told you many times, follow the money. It may not make sense, but, like, March Madness doesn't have to expand. It's going to expand because it's more money. And that's the same thing with college football. For years, they had one versus two, and that was it. And I just kept pleading with them, and I'd say just make it four. Like more teams, more interest. Well, you open the door, and you're opening more than just a door. You're opening all the windows, you're opening up the roof, and all of a sudden, here we go. And it's never enough. But thanks for the phone call, Michael. It's going to happen. It's going to be a professional model. At some point it will happen, and then you're going to have the haves and the have nots and it'll be unfortunate. But, you know, this is, you know, we're headed this way. We just are. Let's go around the room. Todd. Best and worst of the weekend.
Todd
Best of the weekend in front of his parents and grandfather, Orioles rookie pitcher Brandon Young came within four outs of a perfect game in Houston on Friday night. They're from the area. The last Orioles pitcher to come that close to perfection. Mike Messina, who back in 1998. Worst of the weekend charges. Wide receiver Quentin Johnston, suffering a scary injury early in Sally's preseason game against the Rams, hit hard in the secondary and a deep ball fell to the turf kind of violently. But eventually he was able to get up on his own and into the locker room in there, monitoring his condition.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, he got popped. You know, that's one of those. He didn't have a chance for the ball. Defensive back, you know, takes a shot at him. And, you know, when you have both teams who gather around a player, that's when, you know Things are serious. Seaton Best and worst My best of.
Seton
The weekend Premier League is back. And for one brief moment, for just a small window of time, newly promoted Sunderland was at the top of the table. They were in first place over Manchester City, Tottenham, Liverpool, all of the.
Dan Patrick
The big guys.
Seton
I grant, I know it's an hour or whatever it was, but it's still fun to see and that's a hell of a journey. If you've been following everything from their documentary to sort of their rides back to the top. Flight has been really great. My worst of the weekend is Josh Dobbs getting everybody hurt Patriots backup quarterback dude, every ball that comes out of this guy's hand is just slightly behind or a little too high or. And you just see these dudes like, oh God, please just be okay. Brutal.
Dan Patrick
Marvin Best and worst I'm gonna start.
Todd
With my worst dp Cause we've been talking about a little bit the Padres getting swept and now they lost their lead in the NL west after losing three straight to the Dodgers. My best of the weekend. I binge watched this show on Netflix called Any Given Saturday and it follows different SEC teams around from last season. Vanderbilt, South Carolina, Ole Miss, Mississippi State. Fascinating. Anything with the sec. To me, it's the most fascinating conference. Anything having to do with college football, especially the sec. I'm in. It's a. It just means more.
Dan Patrick
I would love to see, you know, the wives of the sec. Oh, yeah. I mean, if we're gonna have Real Housewives of Orange county or Salt Lake City. Yes. Mark.
Todd
Yeah, they talked to Shane Beamer's wife, the head coach of South Carolina, and she's like, I feel it. Whenever they lose, I feel like it's my fault. It is serious down there.
Dan Patrick
Paulie Best and worst Best of the.
Paulie
Weekend Little League World Series. Watched a lot. Great coverage. Francisco Lindor, the Mets was there. He was sitting in the stands with the kids. It was really great experience to see him there. And another best of the weekend. The LA Rams used one quarterback the other day, Stetson Bennett IV. 28, 43, 24 and three touchdowns. I wonder what the record is for most passing yards in a preseason game. The best I could find is like Tony Romo had 340 or something. But usually no one throws for 300 because they mix up the quarterbacks. Stetson Bennett, 324 and three touchdowns.
Dan Patrick
And they might need him given Matthew Stafford's situation. That Stetson Bennett Jr. The fourth and did he also throw the pick to that big lineman and then he kind of made the tackle down the sideline. Yes, that guy was rumbling, stumbling. That's where your quarterback and you have to make a business decision there. And given that Matthew Stafford's got a tender back, I don't think I'm going over there to make that tackle. He kind of got in his way and then got brushed aside and then the, the defensive lineman kind of stumbled. But it was. That was funny. That was great. All right, we'll take a break. Have you ever looked at a piece of abstract art or music or poetry and thought that's just a bunch of pretentious nonsense? Well, that's exactly what two bored Australian soldiers set out to prove during World War II when they pulled off what was either a bold literary hoax or a grand poetic experiment, publishing over a dozen intentionally bad but highly acclaimed works of expressionist poetry under the name Ern Malley. In an incident that caused a media firestorm and even a criminal trial, the Ern Malley episode made fools of believers and critics alike and still fascinates poetry lovers to this day. We break down the truth, the lies, and the poetry in between on Hoax, a new podcast hosted by me, Lizzie Logan, and me, Dana Schwartz. Every episode, Hoax explores an audacious fraud or ruse from history, from forged artworks to the original fake news. To try and answer why we believe, listen to Hoax on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Diana Rossini of the Athletic said that the Cincinnati Bengals are looking for both draft pick compensation and a defensive player in return for trading Trey Hendrickson. He said to make 16 million in the final year of his contract. They did say you want to seek a trade, go out and they couldn't find a match. And he is still on the outside looking in for the Bengals. Terry McLaurin of the Commanders, he's on the outside looking in as well. The Commanders in the Bengals play tonight. More phone calls, by the way. Preseason. This is where depending on what your team or your player does, you're either it's preseason or, hey, it might only be preseason. But if you're a Chicago Bears fan and you beat the Bills 37 to nothing, how are you reacting today? And if you're a Bills fan, how are you reacting today? Does this matter? If you're a Bills fan, do you go, oh, yeah. Or do you go, it's only preseason? Or if you're a Bears fan, do you go, I know it's only preseason and you know Caleb Williams. Oh, my gosh, did you see Caleb? Caleb Williams is supposed to be good. This wasn't Shador Sanders out there or Jackson Darth, Dylan Gabriel, the media reaction to Caleb Williams. First of all, he was 6 of 10, first drive with Ben Johnson as his new head coach. All right, so he completed 60% of his passes and let him. Do you know he had a touchdown? Okay. He's supposed to be great. Yes, Marvin, I think as far as.
Todd
The preseason goes, it all depends on how good you were last year. If you were good last year and you lose 37 to nothing. Ah, just a preseason. But if you were bad last year or didn't meet expectations, you're trying to look for any, like, inkling of positivity going into the regular season.
Dan Patrick
All right. You're going to add more credence to it if you're a Bears fan as opposed to if you're a Buffalo Bills fan. Because the Bills are a Super bowl contender and the Bears should be a playoff team. Yes.
Todd
Todd, what if your team did better than expected last year and won 30 to 9 and 277 in their first two preseason games. How excited the Broncos that would be the Broncos beating the Niners 39 and they just beat the Cardinals 27 7. Is that anything?
Dan Patrick
How do you feel?
Todd
I feel pretty excited. Silly. Yeah, but I feel better.
Dan Patrick
It's your team. I don't give a damn.
Todd
They've got to go there are parts like 57, 16 in the first two preseason games is that they're gonna go.
Dan Patrick
To the Super Bowl?
Todd
Who knows? Just win the AFC west first. We'll go from there.
Dan Patrick
All right. Pie to the face.
Todd
Why? Oh, boy.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, see, right?
Seton
I mean, it feels better to win than to lose. You cannot lose games in the NFL and still win.
Dan Patrick
So Trent Dilfer.
Seton
Yeah, it feels better to win than to lose. So it's kind of like, yeah, your team just lost 38 nothing. But who cares? It's a preseason. Nah, man, Go out there and win, dude. Like, what the hell?
Dan Patrick
Yes, Paul.
Paulie
But maybe last night's game. Bill's Bears is two teams going into the game with two separate mentalities. Josh Allen didn't play a snap. So you're not concerned about winning that game, or else Josh Allen would have played. And otherwise you're just looking at the lineup behind the starters. You have a great starting lineup on both sides of the ball. And for Chicago, you go in. Let's try to set the tone here that every game matters. Young team, a lot of disappointments over the past 30 years. So those two clashed last night. So you get 38. Zero.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. And you got Ben Johnson, who is, you know, he wants to have his foot on the accelerator that, hey, let's go out there and win these games. I would want my team to go out and try to win these games if you. If you underachieve. Last year, you know, the Bengals, what did I say that first week when they lost to the Patriots? I said, that'll come back and haunt them. That could keep them from the playoffs. And it did. I want you ready to go week one. I don't want you using week one and week two of the regular season to kind of ease into the season. I want my team ready to go. Mo in Arizona. Mo, thanks for holding. Best and worst of the weekend.
Gus
Morning, Dan. Dennis. I got two worst. One best. Well, actually, other way around. So my daughter had 18 years old. She brought a boyfriend home. That's my worst. My best is, well, Dodgers got. Got the sweep. And also best is my nephew and my. My uncle were there to kind of tie the guy, give him like the third degree. It looked like an episode of Bad Boys. It was awesome.
Dan Patrick
All right, well, thank you, Mom. Yeah. 18 year old bringing home a boyfriend. I've been there with three of my daughters. And you're like, hey, have him come up and say, introduce himself in the kitchen. Came in, you know, downstairs into the basement. I'm yelling to my daughter, hey, tell Spicoli to get up here. You look like Sean Penn from Fast Times at Ridgemont High. She goes, who's Spicoli? I said, have your date come up. He came up, introduced himself. I said, all right, get out of here.
Paulie
Yeah, Paulie, do you get nervous if the boy is overly polite?
Dan Patrick
Well, if you're old enough to remember Leave it to Beaver with Eddie Haskell. Like, I'm on to you already. If you're trying to go, oh, hello, Mr. And Mrs. Patrick. It's great to see you. I really like your house. Oh, your dog is so cute. Like, no, you can save that. You know, just. Just say, enough. Introduce yourself, and if you want to throw anything else in there, that's fine. But the. The BS meter, it is, you know, in the red. You know, I'm like, all right, I'm on to you right now, dude. All right, I've been there where you are, so I got you. It's. It's like, meet the parents when De Niro's at the traffic light with Ben Stiller. It's like, hey, I'm on to you, dude. Yes, Todd, that's still got to be.
Todd
Better than yo, cool crib. I like this place. You know, it could be very much the other way, where the kids got, like, nothing.

Cool crib. Oh, cool crib.
