Dan Patrick
You are listening to the Dan Patrick show on Fox Sports Radio. Welcome to the program already in progress. It's hour two on this Tuesday. Todd's here, Seaton's here, Marv, Paulie, yours truly in the back room. Guys. Basketball tonight, can the Pacers do it again? They're nine point underdogs at the Cavs and the Warriors. They try to keep the trend going by stealing game one on the road. They're seven point underdogs. Knicks come back, beat the Celtics, Celtics missed 45, three pointers. The Nuggets beating the Thunder as Aaron Gordon at the buzzer. And they take game one Joker by the way and oh, by the way of 42 and 22 rebounds. Stat of the day is always brought to you by the great folks at Panini America. The official trading cards of the show and make sure you download the app. If you haven't done so our streaming partner peacock. Go to danpatrick.com you can click on the Spirits tab. And a great offer that we well, it's been 10 years since it was last available and we've been working on it for a while. It's an award winner. Go to danpatrick.com play the day we had that with Aaron Gordon there were a couple of plays of the day certainly with what the Knicks did, winning it in overtime. And if you're a Boston Celtic fan, I guess you just have to chalk it up is one of those nights and we won't have another one of those. But if you're the Knicks, the Celtics couldn't have played worse in the second half and you won by three in overtime and might concern me a little bit. But if you're a nick team, you you'll take any win you're going to get. They'll be hard to come by. Do I think Boston will have another one of these games? Probably not. Can the Knicks steal another game? Probably so. 8773 DP Show Email address dp@danpatrick.com Twitter handle @DP show the great Doc Emerick, a former hockey play by play voice hall of famer will join us coming up a little bit. And Gilbert Arenas, former NBA all star favorite of the show, he'll join us in the final hour of the program. Talked a little bit about the Ravens cutting Justin Tucker. They had football reasons to cut him. Now we know why they cut him. But they can't say that they cut him because it's football related. He spent 13 years there. Probably going to be a Hall of Famer. Certainly has the credentials. But you have these civil suits that are still ongoing. And he's under investigation by the NFL. The NFL also announced the draft in 2027 will be in Washington, D.C. next year. Of course, it will be in Pittsburgh. 8 7, 7, 3 DP show poll questions. Seaton, what are we going to go with in our two. We have many up there right now. Which team will advance? Knicks, Nuggets, or neither? Right now, with 44% of that vote is neither. No. Nuggets at 42%. The Knicks only 14% of that vote. Nobody's got a lot of faith in the Knicks. Okay, we also have. Which do you prefer, analytics or gut? Hmm. Right now, 86% of the audience say they prefer the gut. I also put up there, which leads to more wins. Analytics or gut? Right now that's at 66% say gut. That is the wrong answer. Those analytics right there are very wrong. And then we also have Aaron Gordon, hall of Fame. Very good or pretty good? Right now, pretty good is leading at 58% of that vote. 6% have him as a Hall of Fame. No, he's not. I also think that we need to establish which is better, good or pretty good, because there's a lot of debate happening right now on social media about is good better than pretty good or is pretty good better than good? Okay, but let's say your wife comes downstairs and you're going out and you say you look pretty or you look good. Like pretty is going to win out over good. I don't. That's. That. That doesn't work well, you know, because I could. I could easily say, like, oh, you look good. And she's gonna like that a lot more than, oh, you look pretty. Okay, but it's pretty. It's good. It's pretty good or good. Isn't that what we're kind of saying? I know. I was trying to cheat a little bit. Todd, I don't see how pretty good would be better than good, especially using your comparison. How about this? If your wife cooks dinner and you say, and she says, how was it? And you say, pretty good? Or you say, how was it good? I think pretty good is much worse. It's pretty good. No, but I could say it. I could sell it. Because I'm an actor. Hey, how was dinner, hun? Pretty good. Or if she says, how was dinner? I go, good. It's all in the voice, the inflection. Yes, Todd. And I'd say back to what would have made it good instead of just pretty good? Dan, after dinner Very well. Thank you, Todd. Paulie wants to come up with a Hall of Very Good. Hall Star game. Hovg, asg, of course. Hall. A Very good. Aaron Gordon is not a Hall of Famer.
Paul Pabst
Keeps hitting these shots.
Dan Patrick
He's a good player. He's a good player. Sometimes he has really good nights. All of really good. Really good. Okay. It's really good. Really good. Maybe we take out pretty good and put really good. So the hall of Fame. Hall of Very good. Hall of really good. And then the hall of Good. So we take out the pretty. Okay, here's Paulie's. Ours. All Star Game lineup of the hall of Very Good. Kevin Johnson. Latrell Sprewell. Peja Stojakovic. Sean Kemp, Jermaine O'Neill. Okay. Penny Hardaway. Rip Hamilton. Antoine Jameson. Rasheed Wallace, Elton Brand. Okay. Is everybody in their hall of Very Good? Let's see. Don't you have some hall of Famers in your hall of Very Good? I don't think any of those guys have made or are making the hall of Fame. I got to check on Kevin Johnson, but I don't think he made it. Okay. Sean Kemp is not a Hall of Famer. Penny Hardaway. Not a Hall of Famer. Injuries grabbed him. Yeah. Rasheed Wallace. Okay. Yes. Marvin. No, I was just nodding my head because this is a really, really good list. Okay. I'd replace one of them with Gilbert Arenas, but. Okay. Just because he's joining us next hour. No, no, no, no, no. He was a bucket for a three year stretch. Okay. He was hibachi. All right. Yes.
Paul Pabst
Yes.
Dan Patrick
Todd. So who wins that game and why? I love the roster. So let's take it to the next step. Who do you want? Who do you want to coach? Who's winning? Who do I want to coach? Who do you want to coach? Slash. Who do you think you have a better chance of winning with? I don't know if I'd get along with Spree. That team has a tendency to choke anyways.
Paul Pabst
Wow.
Dan Patrick
Come on. It's still too soon. That was a long time ago with pj. You're better than that. Not much. I'm not much better than that. Yes. Yes. If you look at those two lists and I think the answer is obvious. The player. You said he's going to the hall of Fame someday. It's got to be Penny Hardaway after his rookie or second year. Only injuries could have stopped that. Yeah. Beautiful to watch. Or jealousy. Sean Kemp. Jealousy with Shaq.
Paul Pabst
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Penny. Sean Kemp made six straight All Star teams and had A run where he averaged like 19 and 11 for about six years. He should have been better. Yep. Yeah. I just remember that series with the Bulls, NBA Finals. And I thought for most of that series, he was the best player on the floor. He was just. And they had no answer for him. Should have been better. Yes, Marv. Rasheed Wallace is on that list. To me, as far as, like, guys that are gifted, he's like, in that Chris Weber territory was like, man, there's nothing that guy can't do. He was a stretch. He was an underrated stretch four. Yeah, he just. He was Draymond before Draymond. He was his own worst enemy. Great shooter. I mean, that's a guy who should have been better. Jake in Houston. Hi, Jake. What's on your mind today? Good morning, Dan. Can you hear me okay? Yes, I can, Jake.
Paul Pabst
Awesome.
Dan Patrick
Hey, I just want to talk about this hall of Fame versus the hall of. Very good.
Paul Pabst
And I'm really having a hard time.
Dan Patrick
When we talk about Draymond Green making the hall of Fame because you're talking.
Paul Pabst
A lot about numbers.
Dan Patrick
And if you look at his career.
Paul Pabst
Numbers, it's like 8, 6, and 5.
Dan Patrick
He never averaged double digit rebounds. And so I'm just really having a.
Paul Pabst
Hard time with him making the hall of Fame.
Dan Patrick
And I think he's talked his way into the hall of Fame. I just want to get your opinion.
Paul Pabst
On that because we're talking a lot of.
Dan Patrick
There's a lot of good players like Rasheed Wallace. All these guys are talking about that.
Paul Pabst
I would take over Draymond Green today.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. You know, Draymond is a guy you have to watch. And, you know, that can be really good, and it can be questionable, but I just think when you look at the. We'll look back on the soul, the heart and soul of Golden State, and it will be him for better or for worse. But he's the kind of guy that you want him on your team you don't want to play against. And I think being a defensive player of the year a couple of times, he's the best passer on the team. Has been pretty much throughout his career. He did all the dirty work. I mean, if you're putting Ben Wallace in, then you have to put in Draymond Green. And he won. Now, did he cost them another title? Yes, but he helped you win titles. And the. The numbers in this case lie. I. I think that if he's getting in and he'll get in, it'll be just intangibles. Yeah. Paulie Draymond gets in like all the Pittsburgh Steelers get in. It's part of a run. And you get credit for a run which helps your hall of Fame case. I think Klay Thompson has five all star appearances and then he missed two seasons. He's going to the hall of Fame. But face value, he's not a Hall of Famer. Yeah, well, they won titles and he was, he probably considered the second best shooter in NBA history, but his team won. If Clay is by himself and playing, you know, someone for Charlotte, then he's going to be Bradley Beal and be like, oh, man, he puts up good numbers. They don't mean anything, but he'll be a Hall of Famer. Andrew in Washington. Hi, Andrew. What's on your mind? Good morning, Dan. Dan, it's. Thanks for taking my call. I do have a question about the.
Paul Pabst
Danets, but I would say Marvin needs.
Dan Patrick
To know his UConn Husky graduate Hall of Famers. Rip Hamilton on Paulie's list is a Hall of Famer as of 2022. So I can't be in the hall of. Very good.
Paul Pabst
Secondly, I think that the, the Celtics.
Dan Patrick
Just, they will stay with their analytics. If you think about it, they went for 15 for 60. Well, they would have went for 17 for 60. They would have won. They don't want to try a different rhythm before getting back their rhythm that won a championship. So my question on the dance is this. Last week you gave out a lot of technicals.
Paul Pabst
You ran a couple of Daniels for some segment.
Dan Patrick
Do they have a limit of technicals they get before they miss a show without pay? No. I mean, if that was the case, then Fritzi would probably go a couple of weeks without pay. But I can't do that as their boss and HR can't do that. Yes. Paul, just to defend my list, Rip Hamilton is not in the basketball hall of Fame. He is in a collegiate basketball hall of Fame. Okay. Which is. So what I'm going to do now is I'm going to bar Andrew. Wow. From calling in for a week. I'm going to run him. If you're going to correct Andrew, I, I, I gotta, I gotta run you. Okay. Except I'll accept the punishment. All right, Fair enough. Yes, yes. Todd. Week seems harsh. You know, like a player will get a one or two game suspension. Can we just say maybe tomorrow's show? No, I'm gonna run it rest of the week. It's only Tuesday though. That's, I don't know. That's strong. He can appeal. He can appeal.
Paul Pabst
To you, though?
Dan Patrick
Yes. He's appealing to you. That's what happens with the commissioner. That's right. Roger Goodell. I'm going to suspend you. Can I appeal? Yes. Who am I appealing to? Me. You're still suspended? Yes. Paul, it is too bad that Richard Hamilton wasn't taken off the Hall, a very good all star team because Jerry Stackhouse was going to write in and take that spot. Okay. The two guard. All right. Nathan in Austin. Hi, Nate. Second time, long time. I gave you a call about a.
Paul Pabst
Month ago about my wedding.
Dan Patrick
I asked for some solicited advice about my now mother in law. You reminded me to tell her how beautiful they looked and making sure no one gets too drunk at the speeches. I was actually thinking about your advice as I was waiting in the groom suite. And before walking up to the altar.
Paul Pabst
I told her she looked beautiful and.
Dan Patrick
She was so happy the whole day. It went really great with no major hiccups. We had a great time. And most importantly, I got her favorite tequila. So she had a great day. Well, congratulations, Nathan. Yeah. Matt in Alaska. Hi, Matt. What's on your mind? Hey, Dan. How you doing this morning? Hello, Dan. It's. It's good to talk to you guys up here in Alaska. You guys are on from five in the morning until eight in the morning. I'm already at work where the rubber meets the road. And that last segment with Tom Chambers and good versus great just had me cracking up. And then the Marlboro lady called in with her raspy voice. Man, I was dying. You just keep me sane in the morning. I would have to say Rasheed Wallace because I'm originally from Portland and he was on the Trailblazers in my impressionable high school years. Lived across the street and one door down from a buddy of mine and he'd let us play hoops on his hoop anytime we wanted. Great guy. Definitely a Hall of Famer. Probably a little biased on that one, but. Latrobel, you choke out your coach, man, you're. You're probably not getting in the hall of Fame, but I would. I would definitely put you in the hall of Good. Thank you, Matt. Thank you. Phone call from Alaska. John in Albany. Hi, John. What's on your mind today? Hi, Dan.
Paul Pabst
First time, long time, really frustrated with the Thunder coach. I think he totally blew the game yesterday. They were playing a free throw game when they clearly had an advantage up 3. It was like they were behind instead. And they also, the Thunder also have a great defense when they fouled Joker.
Dan Patrick
With 12 points 6 seconds left.
Paul Pabst
I was like, what are you doing? Denver's a proven championship team that has been there before. Now you're taking a young team and you're putting them on the free throw line and if they miss a free throw now, they possibly could lose the game when they should have just played.
Dan Patrick
It out and see what happened.
Paul Pabst
The worst thing that would have happened was they would have went into overtime. And then I couldn't believe my eyes.
Dan Patrick
Once with 10 seconds left after Shea Alexander bailed them out with that play with the layup.
Paul Pabst
I'm thinking, okay, it's going to be over now. Then they foul crew. Caruso fouls Gordon in the backcourt with 10 seconds ago.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, I know we, I don't want to do play by play on this, but that's analytics, John. That's what I keep talking about. They, they played the analytics game and it cost him. And Denver hits a big shot. Boston played the analytics game and it cost them. Normally those teams win these games, but you start to look at the philosophy and you look at the numbers. It's situational basketball and it certainly cost Denver or cost OKC last night. We'll take a break. More phone calls coming up. One of our favorites, the greatest play by play voice the NHL has ever known. Doc Emrick will join us coming up next. We're back after this. On November 5, 2018 at 6:33am A red Volkswagen Golf was found abandoned in a ditch out in Sleephole Valley. The driver's seat door was open. No traces of footsteps leaving the vehicle. No belongings were found, except for a cassette tape lodged in the player. On that tape were 10 vile.
Paul Pabst
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
Dan Patrick
Grotesque. Oh, my God. Oh. Horrific stories that to this day have been kept restricted from the public until now. You feeling this too? A horror anthology podcast. We'll talk to him coming up in about 40 minutes from now. Doc Emmerich is a Hall of Famer and former lead play by play voice for NBC's NHL coverage. And now, I don't know what kind of play by play you're doing in retirement. Are you doing any play by play in retirement, Doc?
Paul Pabst
Only describing dog walks and occasional visits to the grocery store. That's pretty much it.
Dan Patrick
Give me a little bit of that.
Paul Pabst
There's milk. It expires on the 28th of May. I. Oh, there's the, there's the 1st of June. I'm gonna take the 1st of June because it'll last longer.
Dan Patrick
Okay. All right. So if you're watching hockey, you're not doing play by play? No, no.
Paul Pabst
But I'm sure enjoying it. My goodness, is it great. We've had some wonderful games to finish up the last round and it's just spectacular. And I guess I've grown spoiled. This is what we get every time at this year. It's why Charles Barkley always talks about sneaking behind the set when he's doing basketball and watching hockey. It's just engrossing. It's wonderful and it's what the sport is all about.
Dan Patrick
But do you get jealous when you look at these incredible finishes and like, you wish you were doing it?
Paul Pabst
No. No. I haven't regretted retirement once. I marvel at what the guys do that are describing games now, but the, the sport is so wonderful. I'm glad I had my years at it. 47 in total. But I don't regret retiring. The thing when I was riding buses in the minors, the one thing that I looked forward to was the planes and the big hotels. And by the time the 47 years was up and we were in Covid, the thing that I didn't particularly like were the planes and the hotels. So I had my time and it was wonderful. I have so many great memories. I met a lot of wonderful people, including yourself. And I'll never forget the day that I was with you and the Danets. McLovin was in goal and I think, I think it was Fritzi who shot on him. He had a broom. I believe somewhere in the archives there is tape of that. But those are memories that I have that I'll always cherish.
Dan Patrick
How do you come to the point where you go now I'm going to retire because we see this with athletes. I'm going to retire from this job in three years. But you, you came to that decision. How did you come to that?
Paul Pabst
Well, in anything where you have a motor skill, which is in athletics as well, you like to make your move before somebody makes it for you. And fortunately with NBC, the hook was not out. But I had had 50 years covering the sport and I did 40 years at the NHL. And I think one thing too that Covid did was just before we took the break In February of 2020, the league came out with rules that were very necessary, where we couldn't have anyone between the benches, where we had to be six feet with a boom mic away from all the coaches and the players. We could not go into the dressing rooms anymore. And that was where the fun was for me. In addition to preparing and doing the was actually being able to learn something more about the players that I could share with somebody. And so all of those things sort of came to the fore at once. The numbers of 40 and 50 were kind of round numbers that were even. And it seemed like a good time. I had so many great memories that it was, it was a great time to be out.
Dan Patrick
I was going to ask you, what's the first thing to go on a play by play person? And it sounds like your eyesight was the first thing to go.
Paul Pabst
Yeah, I think that would be probably true. You and I were together in London at the Olympics in 2012. And the one thing that happened there was that I discovered to my chagrin when I was doing water polo, that I had cataracts. And so those were removed. And my eyesight, of course, immediately got better. But you realize that Those are things that happen with age. But, yeah, I don't know that my eyesight was going, but you realize that that does happen as you get older. But I think the thing with me was that the travel was starting to get to me and I wanted to be home more. And all of those things added up to make for the right decision and to get to watch these games now. And especially the finishes that we had in the game. Sevens were, you know, the come from behind third periods in the game, Sevens as well as the. As the come from behind almost tie last night in Toronto. Those are exciting. And I, I do envy the guys that are doing the games now, but I wouldn't want to be there. They are having the time of their lives doing these games, and I'm glad for them.
Dan Patrick
Talking to Doc Emmerich, member of the NHL and Sports Broadcasting hall of Fame. If I would have Talked to you 20 years ago and I would have said to you, you know, Gretzky's goal scoring record is not safe, you would have said, what?
Paul Pabst
You're wrong? I would have said, yeah, I would have said, I agree with you that, that it's. I would. I would have said, it's safe. But then we had Wayne Gretzky on at the all star game in St. Louis five years ago, and he was asked the question, can Ovechkin catch you? And he said, yes, and here's why. He's on a good team that wins a lot of games and he's healthy. He rarely gets hurt. This year he did, but to his credit, he came back a bulldozer, and he wound up eclipsing the record in a marvelous ceremony that the NHL had on Long Island. But the other thing is, too, the one thing that is often overlooked. He came into the League of Bull in a China shop and he would hammer players. He was often the league leader in hits, and he was again this year. He never stopped playing his game, and yet he was the greatest goal scorer of the modern era, and now is the record goal scorer of all time. And a guy that came in, I'll never forget the first time that we ever had him on our telecast in New Jersey. Of course, we wanted to interview Alex Ovechkin. And so he came in and politely sat down and we had a technical difficulty on MSG Network. And we said, alex, we're sorry, we can't do the interview. He said, no, you don't understand. I want to do the interview. And we told him, no, we can't. We've got a technical Problem in the truck, we can't do it. And so he got up and left. But he really wanted to do everything the right way when he first came here.
Dan Patrick
If I said, you can start your team with Ovechkin or Crosby, I want.
Paul Pabst
Them both, because I want the playmaker and I want the goal.
Dan Patrick
It doesn't work that way, Doc.
Paul Pabst
Okay, Crosby. And here's why. Because you. You do need goal scorers. I understand that. But Sid is the. The guy who is always going to be prepared to play first on, last off is always going to be a playmaker and a guy that will lead by example. And that's not to say that Alex's captain does not. We saw what he did with Marc Andre Fleury, and they were arch rivals, of course, for a long time. He has led by example, too. But here's an. Here's a story that showed what Alex has grown into, and it would make that on the rare. On the total of years. Sid has done this in Pittsburgh, but Alex has picked up that slack in the later years in Washington. I was talking with Barry Trots before what turned out to be the last game that Washington would play before they won the Stanley cup championship. And I said, can you retell a story that you told me earlier in the year about. About Ovechkin? And so he did. And so I did tell this at the end of the playoffs when Washington was winning the Stanley cup. It was that summer before, and the Capitals had disappointed again, and Alex was getting married and Barry was invited. And so he went over to Moscow and attended the wedding. He was invited to the reception, and Barry said, I'm not going to go to the reception with a bunch of my hockey players. I'll wait. So he had dinner with Alex shortly thereafter, and he said, alex, I've got to talk to you seriously about what's coming ahead. There is a lot of unhappiness in Washington, and there are people who think it's your fault, and there are people who think that it's the fault of some of your teammates. And there is going to be change. You are going to have to train like you never trained before. You are going to have to be the first guy on the ice, and you are going to have to be this team's leader. It's not pleasant to think about, but that's what's ahead. That fall, he came in and scored seven goals in the first two games. And even though Washington fell behind in their playoff series, they were rallied and went ahead and they went on and won the Stanley cup and he's been the great leader ever since. But Sid has been doing that ever since he came to Pittsburgh. And so when you force me into that corner and the paint is still not dried, I choose Sid.
Dan Patrick
What is it like when, you know the game can end at any moment when. When you get into sudden death overtime? So as a play by play guy, what, you know, what is your game plan of how to call it so you're on time with it or a little bit ahead of the play as opposed to kind of cleaning up after that?
Paul Pabst
Yeah, you have to be right on it. And with that. And the referees tell me the same thing with that. You have to be on it, but boy, you got to be right. And you also have to be in control of your emotions so that you don't overdo it. This is about the players. It is not about yourself. It's not about signature calls or anything else. By the way, sidestep this for a minute. I need to pay tribute to the referees who handled game seven because those games were thrilling because of them. They didn't want to be them in the way. They didn't have a steady parade to the penalty box because they were there on merit. They didn't leave that behind. And they were nervous, too, I'll bet. And you get nervous before an overtime in a Stanley cup game seven. I've had some of those. But, yeah, you need to be on top of it. You need to be right. And as I heard Larry Colness, the caller of the Kentucky Derby interview, you can't have an eraser on your tongue. You can't take it back. And so all of those things go into making this kind of work exciting. And I always encourage young people who are interested in it to get into it and stay into it, because it is certainly rewarding and a great way to make a living. By the way, those names are Wes McCauley, Dan O'Rourke, John Hebert and Gord Dwyer. Those are the four guys and stripes that handled those games.
Dan Patrick
What hockey name gave you fits.
Paul Pabst
Sergey Nemchinov. And it sure shouldn't have. I was working with Bill Clement and we were doing. And I kept saying Nemchimov with an M. And he said, say Nemnoff. Nemnoff. Nemnoff. You can do it, can't you? And I said, yeah, I can. And it came down to where if I said that over and over again before the game, that it would. It came out more right than wrong. But it's an imperfect science. Isn't it? I mean, you guys have to talk three hours in the morning, and it's not totally perfect, I suppose, but I never did a perfect game. I mean, you. You talk over and over all the time, and you do make mistakes, that's for sure.
Dan Patrick
We don't care about getting it right, though, Doc. That's the difference between us and you.
Paul Pabst
But you do. Am I looking at the team that's going to be on Celebrity Family Feud? Is this the five?
Dan Patrick
Yeah. Yeah.
Paul Pabst
Okay. You've chosen.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. For better or for worse. Yes. Any advice on Celebrity Family Feud?
Paul Pabst
No. I think you should rely on your experience, and that's my stat of the day.
Dan Patrick
Oh.
Paul Pabst
The number is 89. The experience that your team has going in, I think will lead you to victory. You have 26 years in June. Fritzi will have 23, Paulie has 18, Seaton has 16, and Marvin has six. That's a total of 89. You rely on your experience, and I agree with what you said last week. You're there to entertain. I mean, it'd be nice if you could win, but the memory will come from entertaining who. And in gut versus analytics coach, the coach that I would favor is you, because I think you're going to go on gut and not analytics.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. Okay.
Paul Pabst
You guys were talking last week about Giannis and his. His poor free throw percentage.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Paul Pabst
When I was growing up, I watched Wilt Chamberlain, and he was terrible. The foul line, I looked it up. He was 51%. And I think you guys said that's about where Giannis was last week.
Dan Patrick
Well, yeah, and somebody. I'm sure they've tried, but it's. It should be fluid. He doesn't have a fluid free throw. It. It's. It stops. It's almost like a ladder unfolding and that. You just. You got to make it start from your legs and go all the way up and follow through. You know, being a great free throw shooter that you are.
Paul Pabst
Well, it's a. It's a new decade, so if I get to New York, it's best of three, and we will try it yet again. I like that left hand hook shot that I see every so often. Is that like the Kareem sky hook?
Dan Patrick
That's Fritz.
Paul Pabst
Ah, Okay. I thought it was you.
Dan Patrick
No, no, no, no, no. And I'll shoot blindfolded if you want to.
Paul Pabst
Okay.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Paul Pabst
As long as it's best of three. Because we've been postponing this now largely because of. Of my logistics, but those are.
Dan Patrick
You're retired. I mean, there's no more excuses.
Paul Pabst
You're right.
Dan Patrick
Right.
Paul Pabst
You're absolutely right.
Dan Patrick
All right. You're welcomed in my dojo anytime you want to, Doc.
Paul Pabst
Okay, Terrific.
Dan Patrick
All right. Great to catch up with you again. Thanks for joining.
Paul Pabst
Thank you. Thank you.
Dan Patrick

In 2020, a group of young women in a tidy suburb of New York City found themselves in an AI fueled nightmare. Someone was posting photos.
Paul Pabst
It was just me naked.
Dan Patrick
Well, not me, but me with someone else's body parts on my body parts that looked exactly like my own. I wanted to throw up. I wanted to scream. It happened in Levittown, New York. But reporting the series took us through the darkest corners of the Internet and to the front lines of a global battle against deepfake pornography. This should be illegal, but what is this? This is a story about a technology that's moving faster than the law and about vigilantes trying to stem the tide. I'm Margie Murphy. And I'm Olivia Carvell. The driver's seat door was open. No traces of footsteps leaving the vehicle. No belongings were found, except for a cassette tape. Lodged in the player on that tape were 10 vile.

Grotesque. Oh, my God. Oh, my God. Horrific stories that to this day have been kept restricted from this too. A horror anthology podcast. Listen on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Paulie just sent me a list of hockey names because when we had to do the highlights at night, sometimes if you're not watching that game, and then you get what is known as a shot sheet. So the individual play of a game. And then all of a sudden I'd always go, okay, any tricky names? And then usually they'd highlight it and then they would spell it out phonetically like Jean Sebastian Jiguer. But, you know, I'm doing the highlights, so not doing play by play where it's a little bit harder with those names and trying to, you know, enunciate. But I remember there were times that you were thinking, this can't be right. It. You know, when you're Ilka Sinnasallo and you're like, sure, I hope I get close. We did. We had a SportsCenter anchor and he just, he knew. Everybody knew he was going to mispronounce the names, but he did it in a way where he didn't offend the hockey fan. It just sounded like he was getting through it really quickly and he would just rush through it and everything was just like he threw everything in the blender and put it on high and just went right through it and. But we would laugh where you just go, oh my God, he butchered it. And he would say, I'm not going to say his name. But if he came on the show, he would admit that he sort of blew through the stop sign when it. When it came to trying to get some of these names, he didn't, he didn't do too well with that. Alrighty, Fritzi, you ready to go with your Kevin Harlan in person? Yeah, let's have some fun. Okay. Kevin Harlan on the call last night. Celtics and the Knicks. Cat goes cross. Caught over to hard, hard. Dishes out to Brunson. Wow, there's an extraterrestrial among us. He wears number 11 and takes the form of Jalen Brunson. It's another three and the Knicks have come all the way back from a 20 point deficit. It's their first lead since early second quarter when the score was 33. 31 and Reggie. A palatable nervous hush has come over TD Garden. Joe Missoula's gut is sensing this one just might be getting away from his Celtics. He signals timeout to the ref and wants to talk about it. Time to buckle up in Boston. It's a Brunson 3 party. We'll step away, but for a moment. This is the NBA on tnt. Head looks like it's going to explode. Yes, Paul.
Paul Pabst
I didn't think he was going to.
Dan Patrick
Make it through that. Yeah, he looks like he's going to collapse. I, I think I would have maybe spaced out the Kevin Harlan going crazy high energy and had a little bit more of a play by Playboys. Maybe that's a long, long paragraph there to try to maintain that. Yeah, I was feeling a little pressure in the skull there. Yeah, yeah, I feel my cheeks getting. Yeah, I think your, your Kevin Harlan is really good when you simplify it with, like, maybe two or three sentences. Maybe spur of the moment, too. I've been known to overwrite the time. Yeah, but, but, but you know when you say, and it's 9 to 8, like, he gets excited. It's 9 to 8, and the Hawks are going to call a time. We will, too. You know, like that it's a 12, 8 run for Denver. That's not really a big deal. 12, 8 run. That's not a thing. Yeah, but that's the joke. That's the funny part. Yeah. See, once again, as Frank Caliendo told you, you're not funny when you're trying to be funny. You're funny when you're not trying to be funny. It's a fair assessment. Yes, it is. I thought your mind, your head was going to explode when Frank is explaining what makes you funny. And then you're going, okay, so don't try to be funny. Then he proceeded to do an impersonation of me, which is pretty spot on, which made me very uncomfortable, as everybody was like, that's just like you. He said. He said that you look like you're eating your face when you talk. There's nothing remotely complimentary about that description. I think we could all agree he does this crazy thing with his mouth. I know, I know. Raj in Chicago. Hi, raj. Good morning, Mr. Patrick. Thanks for taking my call.
Paul Pabst
Hall of Every.
Dan Patrick
Good. I just thought of another name, too, but my first name was Vin Baker, and also Mookie Blaylock, man. What y'all think of that? Man, I don't know if I'd put Vin in there, but Mookie. Mookie had a run. Mookie was. He was great. Great in college. And the fact that Pearl Jam. Didn't they name their band Mookie Blaylock to begin with? Yeah. Paulie, a lot of people are asking, what's the Mount Rushmore of the hall of. Very good. The hovg. And I was looking at the career scoring list. If you score 20,000 points in the NBA, generally, you're going to the hall of Fame. But there's like five dudes who aren't or didn't. Antwan Jamison, Joe Johnson, Tom Chambers, Cliff Robinson, and Jamal Crawford. They're all at the 20,000 mark. They're right by each other as well. And I don't think any of them are going to the hall of Fame. Tom Chambers should be in the hall of Fame. He should be. 20,000 points. Yeah. And one of the greatest dunks in NBA history. Remember when he Put his foot on Mark Jackson's chest. He climbed him. He went up and dunked on him. One of the great dunks of all time. That's a pretty good list there. Jamal Crawford has 20,000 points and no all star appearances, which is hard to do. It is.
Paul Pabst
But he won six man of the.
Dan Patrick
Year six straight years, I think. But not good enough to start. 20,000? Yes. Marvin. You're gonna argue. I'll just say he's in the Entertainers hall of Fame. Okay.
Paul Pabst
All right.
Dan Patrick
Okay. Most entertaining non hall of Famer. Yeah. Him. White chocolate. I was watching some Jason Williams videos over the weekend. Jay, Will can still play. Oh, he kills the 40 over Mensley. Oh, my God. No. He's 40. He's killing these 25 year olds. They all want to check him. And I'm like, the dude's got an incredible handle. He's breaking hips instead of ankles. He leads the league in hip replacements. Yes. Mark. Was that on Facebook? Yes, it was. Yeah. J. Will. Beautiful shot. Beautiful shot. Teammates with Randy Moss in high school. Yes. I just want to say that your deep dive into Facebook free retirement is very concerning. Really. It's alarming even. Really. And it's. I. I don't want to overstep, but I'm concerned. Really. Wow. Coming up, before you know it's gonna be. Did you see those columns under the pyramid? That's crazy, dude. I didn't know that. Definitely. Aliens built them. Gilbert Arenas joins us next. The Dan Patrick Show – Hour 2: Hall of Very Good with Mike “Doc” Emrick
Release Date: May 6, 2025 | Host: Dan Patrick | Network: iHeartPodcasts and Dan Patrick Podcast Network
In the second hour of The Dan Patrick Show, host Dan Patrick delves into the intriguing concept of the "Hall of Very Good" with beloved sports commentator Mike “Doc” Emrick as a special guest. The episode blends lively sports discussions, audience engagement through polls, and insightful commentary from both the hosts and their callers, all while maintaining Dan Patrick's signature humor and in-depth analysis.
The hour kicks off with Dan Patrick and his co-hosts—Todd, Seaton, Marv, and Paulie—reviewing the latest basketball games. They analyze key matchups and standout performances:
Pacers vs. Cavs and Warriors: The Pacers are discussed as nine-point underdogs taking on the Cavs and Warriors, with efforts to sustain their winning streak by stealing game one on the road.
Knicks vs. Celtics: A thrilling recap of the Knicks' comeback victory over the Celtics is provided, highlighting the Celtics' missed 45 three-pointers and the Knicks' resilience in overtime. Dan notes, “If you're a Knicks team, you'll take any win you're going to get” (03:15).
Nuggets vs. Thunder: The Nuggets' buzzer-beater win against the Thunder, featuring Aaron Gordon's impressive 42 points and 22 rebounds, is another focal point. Dan humorously remarks on Gordon winning game one, “Not another one of those nights” (04:05).
Throughout these discussions, statistical highlights and personal anecdotes enrich the conversation, offering listeners both factual insights and entertaining banter.
Dan engages the audience with several poll questions, revealing interesting trends and sparking debate:
Which team will advance? Knicks, Nuggets, or neither?
Current Results: Neither (44%), Nuggets (42%), Knicks (14%)
Dan comments, “Nobody's got a lot of faith in the Knicks” (06:15).
Which do you prefer, analytics or gut?
Current Results: Gut (86%)
Dan expresses skepticism, “That is the wrong answer. Those analytics right there are very wrong” (07:00).
Aaron Gordon, Hall of Fame: Very Good or Pretty Good?
Current Results: Pretty Good (58%), Very Good (6%)
Dan dismisses Gordon’s Hall of Fame prospects, “Aaron Gordon is not a Hall of Famer” (08:00).
These polls not only engage listeners but also highlight the hosts' perspectives on current sports debates, particularly the role of analytics versus intuition in coaching decisions.
A significant portion of the hour is dedicated to exploring the "Hall of Very Good," a tongue-in-cheek alternative to the traditional Hall of Fame. Paul Pabst introduces the concept, leading to a vibrant discussion among the hosts:
Proposed Members: Kevin Johnson, Latrell Sprewell, Peja Stojakovic, Sean Kemp, Jermaine O'Neill, Penny Hardaway, Rip Hamilton, Antoine Jameson, Rasheed Wallace, and Elton Brand.
Debate Points: The hosts evaluate whether these players deserve a spot in the traditional Hall of Fame or if they fit better in the humorous “Hall of Very Good.” Dan argues, “Rip Hamilton is not in the basketball hall of Fame. He is in a collegiate basketball hall of Fame” (10:56), prompting further scrutiny of player achievements and contributions.
As the discussion heats up, Dan introduces the special guest, Mike “Doc” Emrick, a revered former hockey play-by-play voice and Hall of Famer. The anticipation builds as listeners prepare for an in-depth conversation with one of hockey’s most iconic commentators.
Retirement and Career Reflections
Doc Emrick shares insights into his decision to retire, emphasizing the physical and emotional demands of play-by-play commentary. He reflects, “The travel was starting to get to me and I wanted to be home more” (24:01), highlighting the importance of work-life balance after a storied career.
Hall of Fame Perspectives
A central theme of the interview revolves around the Hall of Fame versus the Hall of Very Good. Emrick offers his expert opinion on notable players:
Alex Ovechkin vs. Sidney Crosby: Emrick passionately argues, “When you force me into that corner and the paint is still not dried, I choose Sid” (29:01), favoring Crosby's leadership and consistency over Ovechkin's goal-scoring prowess despite Ovechkin breaking Gretzky's record.
Draymond Green’s Hall of Fame Candidacy: Emrick expresses skepticism about Green's Hall of Fame potential based purely on statistics, noting, “He never averaged double digit rebounds” (08:54), while acknowledging his intangible contributions to team dynamics.
Play-by-Play Insights
Emrick delves into the nuances of play-by-play commentary, emphasizing accuracy and emotional control. He advises aspiring commentators, “You have to be right on it… you have to be in control of your emotions so that you don't overdo it” (32:27). Discussing memorable moments, he reminisces about historic games and the critical role of referees in maintaining game integrity.
Personal Anecdotes and Memorable Moments
Emrick shares anecdotes from his illustrious career, including interactions with legendary players and behind-the-scenes experiences. He recounts the moment Alex Ovechkin surpassed Wayne Gretzky’s goal-scoring record, highlighting Ovechkin’s dedication: “He came in and scored seven goals in the first two games” (27:00).
As the hour wraps up, Dan Patrick and Doc Emrick summarize their discussions, reinforcing the value of recognizing "very good" players who may not make it to the traditional Hall of Fame but have left significant marks on the game. The episode closes with a tease about upcoming segments and future guest appearances, maintaining the show's engaging and informative momentum.

This comprehensive discussion not only entertains but also provokes thought on how we honor athletic excellence beyond traditional accolades.
