Hey, Kavino and Rich in for dp. Thank you, Dan. Patric. Thank you, Dan. Happy to see you. Hope you had a nice weekend. Let's have a great week. This is day two of our segmented hat trick. We'll be here tomorrow. Right now broadcasting live from the Fox Sports Radio studio. Broadcasting live from Atlanta during the MLB All Star festivities. We got voted in, bro. Very, very pumped. Voted in. We're going to be filling in for Dan Patrick that week. The brightest baseball athletes from HBCUs are about to make history there in Atlanta. Catch the HBCU Swingman Classic, presented by T Mobile, hosted by Ken Griffey Jr. And stay for the post game fireworks at Truist park on July 11th. For tickets, visit allstargame.com your chance to see the fireworks, Rich, since you missed out this weekend. You know, I. I saw fireworks, but. No, you didn't. Not. Not like good ones. You saw jumping jacks, bro. You saw sparklers, you saw whistlers. Something from your roof with your solar panels. Yeah, that doesn't count. Oh, boy. Hey, you know, I want to do some NFL to kick off hour two. I had a question, though. Real quick. The Dan Patrick Show. What's your question, buddy? Of course we got trivia. We're giving away prizes. We'll do that next hour. Last one standing, Joey Chestnut stopping by. We'll talk some NFL next. Am I still eating the leftover potato salad on my fridge? I don't know. That's my question today. Really? It's a seventh. Enjoy your leftovers, everybody. Still beat that crap? I don't know. To wrap up last hour, that George Costanza bobblehead for the game in August at Yankee Stadium. 299 I'm seeing on ebay right now. What's the deal? It's George sleeping under the desk. I love a good nap. Sometimes it's the only thing getting me out of bed in the morning. That's the quote. But 299? Get out of here. And people care more about a bobblehead than your Yankees. Speaking of lots of Yankees in the All Star game, is our goal again not only to do a great show and for Dan Patrick from Atlanta, but we gonna try to get on TV or what are we bushwhacking at the Home Run Derby? I Want the world to tune in because. Whoa. Our whole goal. We used to go to Home Run Derbies every year early on in the show's history, and our goal was just to get on TV so our listeners could see us and we would do the Luke and Butch Bushwhacker. Whoa. Yeah. And getting on TV accidentally like that meant more than actually having a show on. Dude, it's the most thrilling thing ever. It's more thrilling. We've had our own TV show on espn. Getting on the big screen and on TV for the Home Run Derby is more exciting. What would mean more to you? Aaron Judge on set with us or you guys getting on TV bushwhacking? Oh, that's a great question, dude. I don't know because. Well, then again, yeah, I have to deal with criticism of how small we look next to Aaron Judge, so I could. I could avoid that. Getting on TV would mean more to me. I like the honesty, dude. You know how our phone blows up? You know, if people see us talking to Aaron Judge? People. Ah, there they are interviewing people again. Whoopity do. If they see us on TV bushwhacking during the Home Run Derby, the phone blows up. Everybody loves it. I just saw you idiots. Yeah. Hey, there they are on tv. It's still a big deal. So our goal, I think I'm gonna declare it here on the Dan Patrick show. Our goal is to make it onto TV somehow, some way. Like Beavis and Butthead in the background just trying to get in on a camera shot, you know, just try to get on there, Rich. So look out for us. Adam Sandler acknowledging you are alive or you getting on tv. Bushwack Adam Sandler. I'm not into it as much as he is, clearly. Come on. If you go to YouTube and search covino and Rich Home Run Derby, you'll see the excitement. We're, like, jumping out of our chair in excitement. It is pretty fun. Anytime a home run goes in our direction and you get on tv, it's the best feeling ever. It's like. It's like when they put you on the big screen at the ballpark, you lose all sense of what's appropriate. You just lose your mind, like, ah, I'm on the screen. It's so much fun. So look out for us. We're proud to bring it to you from Atlanta next week, right? Next week. We fly out a week from yesterday. So let's go. And for DP now, baseball. I get it. Halfway there. Living on a prayer, as you always say, Bon Joey should be Further along by now. Yeah. But football, 59 days away, is that correct? Yeah, Countdown's on. I mean, it's just interesting because when football hits, your life changes. I've always made this ridiculous proclamation that when you date someone, I feel like they need to see you through the different sports seasons before you settle down. Like, I feel like my wife needed to see me in football mode before she knew what she was getting into. Because we're talking Thursday night, Sunday, Sunday night, Monday night. And then if you're into college football, Saturday, like it's. Your life changes come football season. As goofy as that sounds, it's true because it takes up so much of your life, so much of your time. Can your significant other deal with that? Are they going to understand your passion and love of sports and football? Will it work? You know, they don't have to love it the way you love it, but will they accept your habits? I guess so. We'll talk about the NFL upcoming season and projections because if you remember, last year, USA Today did the weakest projection ever. Yeah. And that's what we wanted to kind of do a little later this morning. A reminder that projections mean nothing. Yeah, I mean nothing. Because if I'm not mistaken, if you think back a year ago, I think they projected that the jets would beat the Packers. And of course, that's all to get people to talk and speculate. And so it makes a headline because who's reading USA Today? No offense, but the jets and the Packers. Now there's another story in the world of. What's the world of tennis? Actually, it's Wimbledon this weekend. Tennis? Yeah. Zapatios de tennis. Why do you think I'm wearing these shoes? And Andy Roddick spoke about, you know, how tough it is to play tennis. Take a listen. I think tennis players are the best athletes in the world. 5 hours and 40 something minutes on the biggest stages. You compare this to other sports. An n game is 48 minutes played in air conditioning where you have teammates, halftime timeouts. To say one thing doesn't mean you're throwing shade at someone else. I'm celebrating and applauding one set of athletes. It's the most complete examination of an athlete that I can think of. You know, we used to get viewed as like, oh, you're soft, like country club sport. I don't know that that narrative exists. I don't know how you can watch and not say the athleticism on display is otherworldly. I think tennis players are the best athletes in the world. The more I watch it the more I think it tell me why I'm wrong. Oh, I like that take. You know, here's what I won't debate. I won't debate that tennis is a lot harder than people give her credit for. Not only for endurance, because it's a skill sport. Like, even if you're a good athlete. And yes, I use three syllables, athlete. Even if you're a good athlete or athlete. Yeah, because Rich is very particular on that. Well, it's a two syllable word you like to throw. It's like, you know, it's like when our update anchor Monty says timberwolves. I can't just let things slide. I know how many dumb things you say that I let slide throughout the day, but I won't deny that it's a skill sport. So let's say you're hitting bombs in your softball league or you're the greatest athlete that ever was. If you've never played tennis, you can't just go out there and wing it. That's not happening. Because even when I played sports every day as a, as a younger man, if I went out to play tennis, I sucked. I, I, because it's a skill sport. You have to know how to backhand, you have to know how to return to serve. You have to know how to serve. Certain things you could just do because you're a good athlete. That takes practice. And I took, believe it or not, you know, you had to take a, like a gym or sports elective. In college, I took tennis just to see if I can get better and like, hang as I got older, play with my uncle or something. And even still I was just, okay, it's not an easy sport. But as far as they're the greatest athletes, I don't know about that. Five hours and 40 minutes of hustle. I think it's down on you. There's different gauges of athleticism. Get in the ring, man, and tell me about it. You tell me. How about getting punched in the face while using all your endurance? But look at it this way. There's such a. You know what it's like? It's, it's like trying to define, like, what's hot, right? Like Kavino. And I could look at different women and be like, yo, that girl's perfect. And you'll be like, dude, she's too fit. I like a fat ass. And I'm like, all right, well, dad, that's not what I like. Yeah, everyone's going to have a different answer because it's all subjective, right? And I think what defines great athleticism or great skill is so subjective because, yo, I can't tell you how many times because I know you'll be like, what about a tub of goo like Bartolo cologne? But I will see premier athletes in other sports try to swing a baseball bat or throw a ball. And I'm like, yeah, what do you do again? That. That goes with the skill side of the sport. Less athleticism involved in that. It's like, do you have this particular skill or not? And that's how I view tennis a lot. In a lot of ways, I saw you could be really athletic and have stamina and endurance and all sorts of skills and stink at tennis. It's about the actual skill, not necessarily about your athletic ability. So let's just. But I will say it's. It's way harder than it looks, and it's an underrated sport as a result. It's way tougher than you think. Let's define those two things to just start the conversation. They're two different things. Skill and athleticism. Right. Because skill. If you say, what's the skill? I'd say, no doubt, 100%. Hitting a baseball. I mean, everybody says it. The round bat, round ball thing. You hear it all the time. Your favorite boxer, you know, number 14 ranked Jake Paul. I saw Jake Paul swing a baseball bat. For a guy that's over 6 foot, athletic, young, you know, doing everything he's doing, He. He looked like he never played baseball. Yeah, maybe he hasn't. You saw Kevin Durant. I saw Kevin Durant throwing a first pitch once. I'm like, Kevin Durant, one of the best pure shooters in NBA history. One of the most dominant guys. Kevin Durant throwing out a first pitch. Looked like you gave it to, like, your sister who never played baseball. Like, what are we doing? No, baseball, there's like a skill. But a skill can be learned. Yes. Now has to be learned. Otherwise. Otherwise you look like a clown. Yeah. So athleticism. I don't blame Andy Roddick for sticking up for his sport. I think tennis is a top three answer. You know what most folks will say, especially fans of this sport? Hockey, man, you're skating, you're playing the endurance. Like what it takes to be a hockey player. When you combine all the things, the athleticism of the toughness involved, skating at that high level, there's people that just skate. And that's a sport itself. Just skating. Do that for a half hour around the holidays. Your. Your legs are like jello, dude. You're leaning on the wall at an ice skating rink around the Christmas season for your girlfriend and you're tired. I tried watching Miracle this weekend for real, and I got tired just watching it. So, yeah, I really, I cut out. I was like, yeah, pushing these kids way too hard. I'm tired now. So when it comes to athleticism, I think tennis and hockey come to mind for me. And boxing, I was gonna say, how can you leave out fighting? How about all those things combined with getting punched in the ribs fighting, I mean, and in the nose fighting, because you don't realize how quickly you would get gassed. And that's. And that's just. I follow this. Boxing. You have to have the endurance while someone's trying to whoop your ass. If I just told you, hit a speed bag for three minutes, take a break. Hit a speed bag for three more minutes, take a break with no one trying to hit you. That's without your face bleeding and swelling up, without someone trying to hit you. I challenge someone to, for three minutes, 12 different times in a row, hit a speed bag with a speaker. You know what? Everyone's going to have their argument. How about soccer, man, you're just running the whole time, right? You have to have endurance. What makes the best athlete is going to be debatable, subjective, like Rich said. But there are some sports that stand out amongst the others. And yeah, five hours and 40 minutes in the sun, back and forth. You got 120 mile per hour. How fast does the surf come in? Yeah, like 120 something. Yeah, 120 mile per hour surf. And then you got to return, by the way. That's the thing. But I think it's more of a, like, what are other things that are harder than they look? Well, listen, because that, that trails off into a bunch of different things. Because you go there with this ego and confidence just because you're a decent athlete or you, you have a confidence about yourself and then you realize, yeah, that was not easy. I have a few that come to mind for me, Kobe, I think that's. Tennis is a great answer. You know who backs us up? Our buddy Matt listening in Minnesota. He said tennis players are absolutely the best athletes in the world. They're the best conditions. Say that to a polo, water polo. He said the hand eye coordination is right up there with baseball and hockey. Take. Taking a punch in the ring doesn't make you an athlete. I don't know about that. He goes. He goes, I played football, baseball and tennis growing up, and I agree, tennis took the most. There's a specific skill Involved man. Because you could be a good athlete and stink at it. Well, there's a reason why pickleball is emerging so much. Because you know why? We all like tennis. And ping pong is a fun little basement game you had. You had in your childhood house. But you know what? Tennis is too much for the average adult to really do. Unless you're good, right? Unless you get tennis lessons. You're at your country club and you're the Buxtons and you're playing with the tennis pro. The average person's like, yeah, I gotta play pickleball. That's why pickleball emerged, because it's an easier version of a game that you can't handle. It's lighter, so it's less on your joints, dude. It's why grown men, all people are getting hurt left and right. Danny. It's. Danny. It's why grown men like me don't play baseball anymore. You know why? Because I don't know if I. You know, you hit 40 and you're like, do I want to be, you know, who could be pitching 80 plus miles an hour in men's adult league? So we all play softball, right? That's the equivalent of 10 tennis. Now I'm going to play pickleball. It's the watered down version of a sport that is not as easy as you think. You gotta have a backhand tennis. But not only that, you can't compete without it. Tell me how. Tell me. I mean, you're an athletic guy, Cavino. You tell me you could serve effectively. No, you could get it over the net. But. But when I was playing again, when I was playing more often. Yeah, I got the hang of it. But it's still not easy. College class. Yeah, my college course. I would have dishonestly, by the way. You didn't have to do that. Like take a random, like for. For your random elective credits. No, I took ass chasing. One chasing. No, I just picture the. The, like a serve, right? Yeah, like that whole, like the, the serving. Like that whole motion. Like you need to. I got two examples of things I went in ultra confident for because I'm like, yeah, I can hold my own. By the way, Rich just looked like he was playing we. I know. Yeah, Rich was. Rich doesn't know how to serve a tennis ball. Get out of here. I mean, I know how to. I bet you know like you like 50 Cent throwing the first pitch. I'm just saying it's like serving a volleyball. Like you think you could do it and you're like, can I really jump up? And, you know, two instances recently. Recently. So they come right to mind where I'm like, wow, that was way harder than I thought it would be. A lot tennis, Andy Roddick saying it requires the best athleticism, and it's the hardest sport to play. These are more skill things than anything. But for one of our buddies, birthdays, we went axe throwing recently, and I'm like, I got this. What is this? Some lumberjack stuff? Get out of here. I could do this because you think, yeah, I could figure out, dude, this is so much harder than you think just to even get it to land. I thought of, like, three things for you. I thought of, like. Because I feel like everything you've been doing lately, you're proving I've been feeling it. Maybe you're not as skilled as we once thought. No, because these, they take particular skill. It doesn't matter how good of an athlete you are. That's my point. And the same thing is with tennis. It's like, if you've never played, you can't go out there and just hack it because you're. You, in your mind, are a good athlete. Your girlfriend just told everyone a couple months ago, you guys went on a vacation and you. You gave her, as the kids say, the ick. Like, she was sort of turned off by your lack of skill. And a couple things you tried. Yeah. And laugh and point fingers all you want, but I want to see you do it, bonehead. And you, too, Danny G. You ever get on a paddle board? No, thank you. You ever get, like. You know what I'm talking about when you stand in there and you're like, yeah. All right. Now, women, I think, have a different. Different center of gravity. Center of gravity where their hips are using them and balancing the belly board. Yeah. But I think they're so light that it doesn't affect the board either way. Yeah. When my ass is on this thing, I feel my knee shaking like a baby deer trying to keep my balance on it, and I'm like, oh. Oh, no. Dude. I felt face first, saw this thing, and my girlfriend was like, oh, I can't believe you did that. I thought you were, like, a good athlete. I'm like, I've never done this in my life. Oh, keep going, because you know what I'm talking about? I'm standing. When you're standing on the. On the board, women do that effortlessly. And look, I got the knack of it, dude. I fell once in an hour, but the whole time, I was, like, petrified. Of looking like an idiot and was. It was enough to make you a single man right now? Yeah, I was concentrating really hard on just staying on that thing. And the final thing is I was on a vacation and my girlfriend likes to do activities. So sort of activities do they have. And water aerobics now. And she's like, do you want to do this archery thing? Like, yeah, archery. Let's go. And again, I go there with all this ego and confidence because, yeah, I could hit a three point shot if I want. Or I, you know, I had 27 Little League home runs. Oh, they call me Bullseye Steve. Yeah. Ar you kidding me? I lived my whole life just, you know, setting up my toys and shooting them down. Target practice, let's go. Yeah, I had a nerf bow and arrow. And dude, I'm telling you, you think you have this hand eye coordination if you've never done it. I was embarrassing. I was embarrassing. I was like, this is not easy if you've never done it before. Again, there's a skill required. So I can lie. You didn't look. I'm not saying I looked like I was Tiger woods, but you didn't look so hot either at our big Covino Rich golf event. Yeah, I wasn't really trying either, but yeah. No, I'm just saying, like, no, there's certain skill sets that are trickier than you think, you know? No, it's true. I mean, I hadn't swung a golf club since I was 20. Going to the golf range or something. Yeah, since going to the golf range. I look terrible, but I knew I, I was more focused on making contact than I was swinging the club. So again, that's another very particular skill sort of thing. Just because you're taking mighty hacks up there doesn't mean you're any good at golf. Oh, did you see? Speaking of which, this is interesting. I knew I'd find this example. Did you guys all see one of the most athletic guys of the last 25 years in sports trying something new? And of course, the comments, you know, some of them were encouraging, but others were like, yo, weak swing. Did you see LeBron posting a video of him golfing? Yeah, I saw that. And we're talking about LeBron James, one of the most dominant athletes maybe of all time. He's a. Because we're talking about particular spills. He's up there at the tee. He's more athletic than anybody. No, of course, no doubt. The guy's a specimen. Right? Defying all odds of athletic genetics. 40 years old playing the way he is. He's up at the tee and there's just something about a swing that looked like. Like, you know, like you throwing lefty or something. You know, like there was something about it where it's like his strokes not there. And it just shows you that it's such. All these different sports require such different skills that if you're. If you're a jack of all trades and you can hang, it's a good trade. Yeah. Athleticism will get you by in the NFL maybe. Right. Because you're just a great athlete. Yeah. Covino did you little bit with the NBA, but you got to still learn how to shoot, but you could still be a great defender. And they could figure it out somehow if it's a particular skill involved, like tennis, baseball, golf, golf. You know, it doesn't matter how athletic you are. Did you ever finish the Dale Earnhardt docu series? I did my Apple TV subscription right now. I like the honesty. I guess I'll never know race car driving. You know, there's people that, like, all they do is left turns the whole time. It's. How about the fear factor involved? Yeah. I was gonna say you could die at any moment. You know, speed, you're going. The endurance it takes to sit in that hot ass car going around in circles. Yeah. All right. And, yeah. I would never have to have knowledge of every part of the car. Yeah. And what's going on and the communication with your team and all. There's a lot going on. Way harder than it looks is really what it comes. And I'll give tennis the credit all day for that. Harder than it looks. There's skill involved, but the best athlete is on the tennis court. I don't know about that. I mentioned it and you. You passed right over it. How about like water polo? Imagine treading water for the entire game. I had a buddy, the endurance involved. I had a buddy that played water polo in college. And you know how dumb I am. When I was in college, I thought, like, I'm being honest here. You were in the Marco Polo league. Marco. Stupid fish out of water. So when I was. When I was in college and my buddy's like, yeah, I play water polo, I thought that they were, like, touching the ground with their feet. I'm like, yeah, what are you playing like, like team handball, speedball in the water. Do you also think they wore polo shirts? And he's like, he's like, you know, we're treading water, right. I'm like, whoa, whoa, whoa. Rich also just Realized that pickles were cucumbers, so. Yeah, that's right. You know, don't put that much stock in there. Let's go to the phones. Let's go to Rich that might know more. Michigan. What's up, Rich? Hey, Rich. Hey, what's going on, guys? What's up, buddy? Hey, I got one for you that you haven't mentioned yet. Motocross. You've got the guys running full throttle, hitting jumps, hitting bumps, whoop to do's all that. And you've got, you know, 15, 20 minutes, plus you're racing against other guys. No doubt, man. I listen, I think back, like, I thought I was impressive hopping a curb on my, you know, GT performer, you know, I mean, I have a gt, don't lie. You got a Huffy with a banana seat. You kidding me? He had streamers like Pee Wee Herman. This guy had no GT whatsoever. The best bike in the whole world. Donovan in Iowa. What's up, man? Hey, Donovan. Hey, Rich. Thank you. I score would be. When I played high school, I played tennis in all sports and every. And my thing, though, would be wrestling, because imagine, yeah, getting your butt beat for the whole practice and you're just laying on the mat trying to get up. I played tennis, and I could do that forever. As long as you get the ball back. I mean, you're in your athletic. You're fine. Can I. Can I tell you, I feel like I'm confident, Donovan, that Cavino and I could have a pretty nice back and forth volley rally right in tennis. Good for you. But if I start hitting your backhand, you don't have a shot. If I start hitting it to your backhand side. You know what I mean? But I would without sounding sexist. Oh, boy, here comes. Drumroll, guys. Anytime you set up a sentence like that, something sexy, I'd like to alert all the affiliates. Say no offense while you're at it. Not to sound sexist. No offense. Has anyone tried to, like, on a resort, play tennis with, like, their wife or girlfriend? And like, you're like, can we volley more than once or twice over the net? Jesus Christ. Say that to Martina and Avratilova and see what she says. Well, I'm saying. Okay, fine, maybe it's just guys still. But I'm just saying, like, it takes two to play tennis, Rich. Yeah, I can hit the ball over. Sure about that? Zach in Montana. What's up, buddy? Good morning, guys. By the way, Rich said that respectfully, just so you know, we have a disclaimer. We could play. Yeah, I made it better. Yeah. What's up, man from Montana? You know, skateboarding, snowboarding, we do that quite a bit. And so I thought I could go to the ocean and surf because I can stand up on the board. But hey, swimming is, for a guy here, swimming is hard. And that's kind of like a nod out to athletes that do things like Tim Duncan. He was a good athlete for a long time because he swam a lot. So, yeah, surfing should be on the list. You know, it's interesting he would, he would say swimming, right? Because that's one of those things that you might be able to do. I'm going to compare swimming real quick to boxing. You could put on boxing gloves and goofing around, hit a boxing, hit a, you know, hit a speed bag or a heavy bag for a minute, right? And then be like, yeah, I could box. And you can do it for a minute. And you realize that's nothing like boxing. If you jump in your pool, the community pool at the Y or something, you swim one cannonball, you're like, I could swim. Can you swim? Like, like swimming's like fast back and forth, multiple laps, like, yeah, you can stay afloat. Yeah, you could, you could stay afloat. All right, anyway, we'll take your feedback harder than it looks. Plus we'll get into some NFL, some pre season rankings. Yes, we have lots more. Lot harder than it sounds, harder than it looks. Much like what we do here as radio tycoons. Everybody thinks they could do what we do. Proof everyone's a podcaster from their bedroom. True story. But it's harder than it looks. Kind of like tennis. To wrap it up, I want to play with Andy Roddick said it's harder than it looks. And the proof is in. I'd say the pudding, but the proof is in. Go online and see how easy it is to get used podcast equipment because people do it. They try to be a, you know, they try to do their own podcast and then quickly realize, oh, and then they sell the equipment. I'm just trying to make it look like what we do is impressive. It's really not. But Andy Roddick was talking about the athleticism and superiority involved in playing tennis. I think tennis players are the best athletes in the world. 5 hours and 40 something minutes on the biggest stages. You compare this to other sports. An NBA game is 48 minutes played in air conditioning where you have teammates, halftime timeouts. The more I watch it, the more I think it tell me why I'm wrong. You know what? I respect it. The more I hear it. Good for him. He's defending it. I like what he said, but I will debate it. I like the stigma that it has of some sort of country club soft sport, though, and thank the movies for that. It's always like these rich douche nozzles that are portrayed Playing tennis, right? I mean, it is a, quote, country club sport, but it's also very tough, which is why rich people have tennis lessons. But again, to wrap it up, I think it's more of the skill that's involved that makes it tough as opposed to, I don't know, fighting, like I said, is probably more difficult. Tennis is up there, though. I just think it's one of those things that are harder than they look. I just feel like someone's wife is always sleeping with the tennis pro. Right? That's the reputation. What are your thoughts? Hit us up at Covino and Rich. Tell Roddick. Tell us why you agree or disagree. I wanted to bring up something before we move on to the NFL before we play a little. Last one standing. Give away some prizes here. Going to talk to Joey Chestnut next hour. That is big victory over the fourth of July weekend. I just saw that. I believe I'm only finding three names of people that have already confirmed that they're in the Home Run Derby. Am I wrong about saying I saw Acuna Jr. Cal Raleigh and James Wesley. James Woods. Raleigh was the big announcement. I don't know who else is involved yet. I know that Schwaber and Pete Alonso have both declined. Same with Judge and Ohtani. And I still think the derby's great. No matter what, we're going to be there. Only three confirmed so far, but is there a responsibility? Especially with baseball being so hot right now? Like, like we, we are big baseball fans, so we're always going to be a little biased. But I feel like with the stars of the game, the Shohei Ohtani's, the Aaron Judges, the Lindors and the Cal Rawlies and the Bryce Harpers and the Tatis Juniors and the schools and Skeens and baseball is in a moment right now where all these young stars are representing. It's like the 80s where every team had the guy you knew who was their starting lineup. Figure baseball's hot right now. I think it's a bad time for these stars to be sitting out the derby. I feel like baseball could kick every other sport in the nuts right now if they were like, you know what? We're going to do our stepped up, we're going to do our derby and guess who's in it? Ohtani, Judge Alonzo. You know, I won't debate that, but I do completely understand why they shy away from it. It messes up people's swings. Bobby. It's happened multiple times, but I call it the old Bobby Abreu because he went in There having a season came out like he forgot how to swing because he got some bad habits formed for taking monster hacks. But I mean did some of the great moments with Robbie Cano and his dad and the mer Fielder Prince and Cecil celebrated together. There's been great moments for the derby and I'm sure this year. This year is going to be great to listen. Cal Raleigh, Acuna Jr, James woods are just three of the names and those are three stars. I'm just saying. If you told me the Home run Derby was Shohei Judge Schwaber, Pete Alonzo, Cal Rally like if you an Acuna Jr. Because he's a hometown guy. If you told me that I'd be like, oh my God, throw in Bryce Harper, last year's winner to Oscar Hernandez and Te Oscar. Throw in. You know who's going to end up doing a guy like Jazz Chisholm because he's. He could hit bombs and he's just pumped to be there. So gonna be like, hey Jazz, why don't you join? But I don't look at Jazz as same. Exactly. That's what makes it a little more underwhelming than it should be. And by the way, but. But we come back every time and we say that it's the most underrated sporting event. Yeah. That we go to. It's so much fun. I don't know if you enjoy it on tv, but they're just hitting bombs. And to be there is electric. It's so much fun when you're there. I have a role here. How about you should have to be top 10 in the category. Yeah. I think they should set some rules and parameters there. Yeah. Because otherwise you're like, why am I caring about this guy hitting home runs? Not even a home run hitter. Now listen, James Tough though. I mean this is the criticism that the NBA James Wood, 23 Homer. So he belongs there. And you know what? Acuna Jr. Not in your league leaders. But he's the hometown guy. And of course Cal Raleigh leading the league with 35. But. But Judge Ohtani Schwerber, PCA. What's up, Cubbies, Crow, Armstrong, get him in there. I just feel like there's an opportunity for baseball. Like I said, you really want to take a chance to show hey. And judge the faces of baseball like coming last place, pulling oblique or something stupid. Because they're doing this contest or like that's why it doesn't happen. They're too valuable. I know. I'm just saying like baseball. I still think it's a Great thing. Not just because we're going there, but I do. But again, we're talking about how we undermine the athleticism in tennis. I think we underestimate the endurance involved and potential injury involved in just taking hack after hack after hack after hack. But because I like baseball more than basketball, I can't talk out of both sides of my mouth. I can't. I'm not Terry Fader. You can if you try. I can't talk out of both sides of my mouth. I can't on one hand be like, derby's great no matter what. Because it is. But what's the biggest criticism of the NBA Slam dunk contest? The three point Shootout? All these things. It's like, well, where's the. Where's the stars? Mac McClunk? Give me a freaking break. You want the star powers? So if we're going to criticize, that's why I give Pete Alonzo lots of problems because he did it every. Yeah, he doesn't back off on it. Well this year he's like, yeah, I'm just not going to do it this year. So I can't get hard on Polar Bear Pete because he's done it many times. Yeah, he's not scared of the moment. Yeah. I think there's also. It's not just the risk. I think there's a lot of pressure on these dudes and it's just not worth it for him. Like an Aaron Judge, he's like, yeah, everyone's expecting me to win. And that's not necessarily maybe. I know what you're saying. You're saying if Judge. You're saying if he hits like 11 home runs and he's out in the first round, it's like, Aaron Judge was out in the first round. Loser. It ruins the mystique. Right. So maybe there is more mystique. But again, I think the derby's great no matter what because these guys are all hitting bombs. I'm just thinking baseball at its height right now, which I feel like baseball ratings are up, numbers are up, attendance is up. Man. They really could put an exclamation point if they said the derby has Judge or Ohtani or both. Maybe bring back some old retired stars just to see him hit some bombs. Barry Bonds could get back up there. All right, well, hey, we got more convened on Rich Seiko. Get out there. Imagine Jose, he says he could hit a softball farther than Judge could hit a baseball. Have you seen that? So, you know, get him in there. We got more convene on Rich in for Dan Patrick Next, be sure to catch the live edition of the Dan Patrick show, weekdays at 9am Eastern, 6am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app there's nothing like sinking into luxury. I was watching that as well as you were watching Hot dog eating our pal Joey Chestnut. No, while you were watching I was eating hot dogs, enjoying it. I finally watched your, your pal P.W. herman. I thought it was good. The Paul Rubens documentary, rest in peace Long as himself. It's called on hbo, Max. It is. It was really awesome to see that story. I say, like, you forget that Pee Wee what ended up becoming Pee Wee's Playhouse that we all watch as kids on Saturday morning. Yeah, I, you know, I don't know if a lot of people realize that started out as like a late night Groundlings type of improv thing. It was an HBO show but never necessarily designed for kids. It was more of like, you know, improv shtick. I think you just realized that I think most people alive remember that it was an HBO special. It was for adults that ended up being for kids and adults. It was sad. I thought a good documentary, though. It was good. You forgot what you realized, you know, here's a man who. Did you go see Jurassic World? Can never be himself. Jurassic World. I did not. I'm guessing that was number one. Did you watch Love Island? Did you finish Squid Game? I did. Well, I did finish Squid Game and. Well, how about this show? Our show again. Search Covino and Rich. Wherever you get your podcast, be sure to follow, rate and review. Give us five stars and you qualify for a prize. We appreciate it. And before we move on, I have one last bone to pick with you, Rich. Never let your buddy make plans for you. Because today we're filling in for Dan Patrick. It's early for us because we're not into this routine. So we wake up at like, 5am we're not, again, used to the schedule, even though we love it. Not complaining, just explaining. No, no, no, no. Hold on. Hear me out. And Rich made plans to hang out with, like, a buddy visiting later on. I'm not going. What do you mean? You're the guy that. I never made the plan. He's the guy that made the promise. Look back in the text message, I thought it was something you did. No. No way. This guy's like, yeah, we'll hang out when you're in town. And meanwhile, our buddy's like, yeah, looking forward to hanging. No, no, no, no. You think that's the last thing I want to do later. You know what I want to do later? Put my feet up and get ready for tomorrow's show. Guess what? This guy. You're going by yourself then? No, you're the guy that said you wanted to hang before we get to NFL, answer this question. Answer this question. Sucks for you guys, I know. No, it doesn't suck for me. We have a buddy. Yeah, it sucks even more when your buddy's backing out last minute. No, no, we have a buddy visiting. When someone says, when you're in town, hit me up. That doesn't mean, like, yeah, well, he hit us up with looking forward to seeing you tonight. And I'm like, oh, no. That sounds like an actual plan was made. Yeah, I know. So I would reread your own text messages. If you could find in a text message form, me can confirming this, then, then I'll go because I know I did not say that. Can I pull a Pete Alonzo and say, you know, I've never really enjoyed the day, the nights out, so I just want to be my best possible host tomorrow because that's why he's sitting out of the All Star Game. What would he say? He says, I never really enjoyed the three days off, so I just want to be in the best possible position to help this team win in the second half. Can I tell our buddy I just want to sit it out tonight to bring my best tomorrow. So sitting at the derby or sitting at the game? Alonzo sitting out the derby. Okay. Yeah. Okay. Yeah, yeah. Not the game. Okay. Just want to make sure. No. All right, fair enough. He's not that weak, but I want to sit it out tonight, man. So I could bring our best to our third DP show of the week. We're going to get to Joey Chestnut coming up on the show in a few minutes. A little post hot dog recap with that guy. We're going to talk NFL Week 1, which is less than two months away, but if you make plans with someone casually, I just got to say this. If someone's like, yeah, yeah, when you're in town, hit me up. That doesn't mean they could say, see you tonight. That's exactly what's happening as we speak. And I want to strangle somebody. I just don't know who it is. Blaming the wrong guy because I won't be there. Okay. See? Hey, we'll be back in a few with Joey Chestnut in for the great Dan Patrick right here on Fox Sports Radio. Podcast Summary: The Dan Patrick Show – Hour 2: "Harder Than It Looks"
Introduction
In the July 7, 2025 episode of The Dan Patrick Show titled "Hour 2 – Harder Than It Looks," hosts Cavino and Rich delve deep into the complexities and underestimated challenges of various sports. Broadcasting live from Atlanta during the MLB All-Star festivities, the duo engages in a spirited discussion about athleticism, skill, and the often-overlooked difficulties inherent in different athletic disciplines.
Main Themes
The Complexity of Athleticism vs. Skill
Cavino and Rich explore the distinction between raw athletic ability and the specialized skills required in different sports. They emphasize that being a great athlete doesn't automatically translate to proficiency in every sport.
Tennis: An Underappreciated Test of Athleticism
A significant portion of the conversation centers around tennis. Citing a quote from Andy Roddick, Cavino asserts, "I think tennis players are the best athletes in the world. They're the most complete examination of an athlete that I can think of," (15:42) highlighting the sport's demanding combination of endurance, skill, and mental fortitude.
Other Sports Highlighted for Their Challenges
Personal Anecdotes on Underestimating Sports
The hosts recount personal experiences where their confidence in their athleticism was challenged, such as struggling with archery and paddleboarding. These stories serve to underscore the episode's central theme: many sports are far more demanding than they appear.
Comparisons to Other Athletic Disciplines
The conversation includes comparisons between team sports like the NFL and individual sports like tennis, debating which requires greater discipline and skill. Cavino emphasizes that while team sports demand coordination and strategy, individual sports like tennis require an all-encompassing athletic prowess.
Upcoming Sports Events and Personal Plans
Notable Quotes
Cavino on Tennis Athleticism:
"I think tennis players are the best athletes in the world. They're the most complete examination of an athlete that I can think of." (15:42)
Rich on Skill vs. Athleticism:
"It's about the actual skill, not necessarily about your athletic ability. So let's just... But I will say it's way harder than it looks, and it's an underrated sport as a result." (22:10)
Cavino on Overestimation of Athletic Skills:
"Everything you've been doing lately, you're proving I've been feeling it. Maybe you're not as skilled as we once thought." (34:05)
Hosts on Starting New Sports Activities:
"I could do this because you think, yeah, I could figure it, dude, this is so much harder than you think just to even get it to land." (40:20)
Insights and Conclusions
The episode "Harder Than It Looks" serves as an exploration of the nuanced demands different sports place on athletes. Cavino and Rich successfully dismantle the common misconception that prowess in one athletic domain guarantees versatility across all sports. Through engaging dialogue and relatable anecdotes, they illuminate the intricate balance between innate athleticism and the acquired skills necessary to excel.
A recurring insight is the importance of recognizing and respecting the specialized demands of each sport. Whether it's the strategic endurance of tennis, the explosive power required in hockey, or the sheer stamina needed for boxing, each discipline tests athletes in unique and rigorous ways.
Closing Thoughts
As the show wraps up, Cavino and Rich shift focus to upcoming sports events, maintaining their enthusiasm and commitment to providing insightful sports commentary. They leave listeners with a reinforced appreciation for the dedication and multifaceted skills that athletes embody, emphasizing that many sports require far more than meets the eye.
